romantic nicknames/pet names in spanish

Cause i’ve seen some truly atrocious use of google translate in recent (nandermo) fics and i don’t want to bash any1 cause obvi they just didn’t know n it wasn’t on purpose so the answer isn’t to bitch but instead try to educate.

let’s start with the most popular and used one’s meanings, then some more specific ones, and end w/ what to probably not do but like if you wanna go for it, do it, im not the boss of u

Amor - Love (can have ‘mi’ which means ‘my’ before it (“mi amor”) but that’s no necessary; can be used like “babe”)

Cariño - Darling (ok, roughly darling?? means ‘one who is cared for’ with the implication you are the one who cares for them, cariño (the noun) also means affection)

Cielo - Sky/Heaven (this ones what it says on the tin, like ‘amor’, can have ‘mi’ before it; kinda saying that they’re your heaven? but its not that deep, tbh. also can be ‘cielito’ which mean ‘little sky/heaven’ and is more cutesy)

Mi vida - My life (this one can’t be separated from the ‘mi’)

Corazón - Heart (i see this one used rarely? but its also used. also you can say ‘mi corazón’ too)

Other names:

Tesoro - Treasure (show stopping, spectacular imo, you can also use ‘mi tesoro’ if u want which is also /chef’s kiss/ in my opinion)

Gordo/a - Fat [person] (ok so this is a cultural thing, but anyone can be called gordo (masculine) or gorda (femenine) regardless of whether theyre fat or not, its just like a Thing. also can be expressed as ‘gordito/a’ which means ‘little fat one’)

Flaco/a - Thin [person] (like the last one, not necessarily literal, can be used for anyone - flaco (m) and flaca (f). alsooooo in some places ‘flacos’ (plural) is informal for ‘partner’ (tienes flaco = do you have a partner, son flacos = they’re partners, etc.) and typically used by/around young ppl (kinda like gf/bf??))

Additonal comments: calling people ‘baby’ isn’t really a common romantic thing? like yes the english word ‘baby’ in spanish convo is romantic but ‘nene/a’ isn’t really (in my experience, different places have different customs). ‘bebe’ is also rare, tho.

Make most pet names diminutive/cutesy w/ -ito/a. I will do so for everything on the list: Amorcito, cariñito, cielito, corazoncito, tesorito. Be warned that most of these are so cutesy some are even cringey??? so like. tread lightly lmao. Also, the one’s you can add ‘Mi’ before are amor, cielo, corazón, and tesoro; the rest you could too? ig?? but its not really used.

sidenote, this is not to dissuade or discourage any1 from using google translate, like, its fine, its a useful tool and makes do when its one word out of 20k or whatever, but sometimes these little things bring native speakers out of it so like i wanted to share this list to do so! if you want to hunt for some odd ones on ur own, the word for nickname in spanish is ‘apodo’, so maybe googling “apodos romanticos” will help get u some hidden gems. but like, keeping it basic like this is fine as well.

Terms of endearment in Spanish

Long post, so it goes under the cut.

Small edit: I forgot to mention, I’m from Mexico so these are the ones I’ve heard people use, I’m sure there are more, if I remember others I might add them in the future. And I’m also sure other Spanish speaking countries have their own words, these are fairly common and some are actually universal to the language, I hope this list helps you.

Words that can be used regardless of the gender of the word or the recipient:

Amor. - Love.

Mi amor. - My love.

Vida mía. - My life (this one sounds more like something Gomez Addams would say to Morticia, don’t confuse it with his iconic “Cara mia”, it’s not the same). You can also use ‘Mi vida’, means the same

Cielo. - Heaven.

Cielito. - Little heaven or just heaven in diminutive to make it cuter.

Mi vida. - My life, written in a different way, means the same thing.

Vida. - (literaly) Life.

Mi luz. - My light.

Luz de mis ojos. - Light of my eyes.

Bebé. - Baby.

Cariño. - Darling.

Cariño mío. - My darling.

Corazón. - Heart.

Mi corazón. - My heart.

Mi sol. - My sun.

Solecito mío. - My little sun.

Mi tesoro. - My treasure.

Tesorito mío. - My little treasure.

Bombón. - Marshmallow (technically speaking it’s actually a filled chocolate, but try to make so many people understand that).

Bomboncito. - Diminutive of the previous one, little marshmallow.

Mi bombón. - My marshmallow.

Dulzura. - Sweetness.

Mi dulzura. - My sweetness.

Galletita. - Cookie.

Bizcochito. - Cupcake.

Ángel. - Angel.

Mi ángel. - My angel.

Mi luna. - My moon.

Male:

Lindo. - Cute, nice, pretty.

Papacito. - Daddy, can be used both in a sexual and non sexual way.

Papi. - Daddy (literally), can be used both in a sexual and non sexual way. Can also be used for kids, ever watched One day at a time? That’s what Lydia calls her grandson Alex all the time.

Precioso. - Gorgeous.

Muñeco. - Masculine for doll.

Nene. - Babe.

Mi rey. - My king.

Mi príncipe. - My prince.

Osito. - Bear.

Conejito. - Bunny.

Mi conejito. - My bunny.

Guapo. - Handsome.

Galán. - Beau (?), an attractive man with grace.

Gatito. - Kitten.

Caballero. - Gentleman (lit. knight)

Caballeroso. - Chivalrous. (e.g. ‘Que caballeroso de tu parte.’ = ‘How chivalrous of you’)

Hermoso. - Lovely/beautiful

Bonito. - Pretty.

Gordo. - Fat/fatty, not meant in an insulting way and can also be used for lean/thin/slim guys.

Gordito. - Diminutive of the previous one, chubby.

Güero. - This one is about having a light skin tone. Doesn’t really matter if the person in question ACTUALLY has a light skin tone. Go to any local market in Mexico and this is one of most used words by sellers to call for the attention of the custumers.

Flaquito. - Skinny. Can be used as a regular nickname regardless if the person is actually skinny and also used by many abuelas when it comes to their grand children.

Female:

Bonita. - Pretty.

Nena. - Babe.

Linda. - Cute.

Preciosa. - Gorgeous.

Guapa. - Beautiful/Lovely.

Hermosa. - Beautiful/Lovely.

Bella. - Beautiful.

Diosa. - Goddess.

Mi diosa. - My goddess

Conejita. - Bunny.

Mi conejita. - My bunny.

Gatita. - Kitten.

Estrella. - Star.

Perla. - Pearl.

Muñeca. - Doll.

Gorda. - Fat/fatty, again not meant as an insult, and can be used for thin/slim girls.

Gordita. - Diminutive of the previous one, chubby.

Güera. - Same as ‘Güero’ but for women. It’s about having a light skin tone. Doesn’t really matter if the person in question ACTUALLY has a light skin tone.

Flaquita. - Skinny.

Reina. - Queen.

Mi reina. - My queen.

According to their personality/phisycal appearance:

Mi tigre. - My tiger.

Mi tigresa. - My tigress

Cerebrito. - Brainiac, works regardless of gender.

Fortachón. - Beefy, hefty strong guy.

Cuerpazo. - Used to say someone has a really nice body or to say that you find someone’s body attractive. No matter the gender.

Meloso/a. - Mellow, a sweet talker or cheesy.

Loquito/a. - Crazy, loony

Chiqui. - Short cutesy way to say ‘Chiquito’(M) or ‘Chiquita’(F) means small or shorty.

Sexy. - You know what this one means, we also use it.

(Note: Some of this, especially the ones that have to do with physical appearance can, and ARE, used by men and women to cat call others and to flirt.)

I'm writing a fic and i need some terms of endearment in spanish, could you help me a bit?

Sorry it took me a while, anon!

Sure I can offer some for you, but keep in mind that some are more common than others in different countries! For example, I heard Spanish people say a lot “cariño” (dear), but it is not that common in Argentina!:

Mi amor / Amor mío - My love

Mi cielo / Cielo mío - My...heaven? I call my bf “mi cielo hermoso” (my beautiful heaven?)

Mi corazón - My heart

Mi alma / Alma mía - My soul (again, I have only heard these in Argentina, I don’t know if other latinxs use them!)

You can also use the above without the possessive “Mi”. Only “amor, cielo, corazón, alma” also work!

Reina / Mi reina - Queen, my queen

Rey / Mi rey - King, my king

A cute one! Older couples call each other sometimes “Viejo / Vieja” (Old man / old woman), or the diminutive “Viejito / Viejita” and it’s so !!!! wholesome and cute !!!

You can also find the diminutives of ALL of these terms above and make them even cuter. (Amorcito, cielito, corazoncito...)

In some latinoamerican countries, couples call each other “Papi / Mami” (Daddy? Mommy?), or “Pa / Ma” (same) And no, not in a sexual way, it’s just...like calling someone ‘sweetheart’ I guess.

Bombón if you want to compare someone to a chocolate covered candy (this one is more frisky and playful)

Tesoro / Tesorito - Treasure / Little treasure

Bebé - Baby

Guapo / Guapa - Handsome / Beautiful, BUT! In some latinoamerican countries “guapo / guapa” means hardworking man/woman.
