I've been working on miniature lion jawbone pendants and holy wow the mold WORKS. I'll be pricing this first run according to quality but anything pulled from the mold in the future will be sparkling perfect. It's a hefty piece roughly 2"x1.5"x1". I was going to split them down the center so the jawbones would lay flat, but I think it's juuust within the height limit to keep them as they are and simply attach a chain to wear.

Belt buckle made for @iinfinitejester with a design reminiscent of the Chauvet cave horses. Made from patinated mild steel with welded hardware, etched copper, and stamped nickel silver, all held together with copper wire rivets.

The Industry
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
December, 2014 Sterling Silver, Cubic Zirconias, Quartz The ring is 5cm tall. The big stone is: 3.1cm x 2.1cm x 5cm (HxWxD)
Some more old work.
This ring was part of a series of work where I made fun of the modern commercial jewelry aesthetic. The idea came from working within the jewelry industry for a time, and becoming acutely aware of just how gaudy and ugly a lot of rings were. The stones were incredibly important for those rings, and more often than not designs would be based around shoehorning the biggest rock they could into a particular ring. So, I decided to take this idea to its next logical extreme by setting a comically large stone on top of a massive band.
Here’s a snippet from the original artist statement:
It is an aberrant abomination which I hesitate to call a ring. It is an absurd joke befitting the mockery that I consider contemporary jewelry to be. It represents all the contempt which I hold towards the gem encrusted standard created by the likes of companies who care more about their bottom line than creativity. It is the next logical progression to the ungodly "centerpiece" gems which are so often the focal point of their jewelry items. It is absurd, it is comical, and it is how I view such jewelry.

Oh hey, here's a new finished object I forgot to share yet! I finished the latest round of metalsmithing class, and I think our teacher overestimated our instincts for delicate soldering work (most of us... struggled), the ring is DONE, it's on my hand, and I love it! I have to take a short break from classes for travel reasons, but I definitely plan to go back as soon as my schedule leaves me breathing room for it!

I MADE THIS COOL THING WITH A FRIEND.
Sara Young and I made this cloak for the Alberta Craft Council collaboration and it's up for auction, along with a little pair of earrings.
Sara did the chainmail and the rust dyed wool. The rust dying was done using chainmail!
I made the clasp and the leather cowl. The design for the leather tooling was made by me and inspired by a 1500's german textile decoration.
The first four pictures are credited to the craft council, and the others feature the lovely model, Tray who is an amazing indigenous artist.

My first project in Metalsmithing this semester! These are cast in bronze using the lost wax casting technique! The spoon didn't completely fill as you can see but I'm so happy that the other two came out PERFECTLY in tact I was inspired by 'Cutlery' by uki3 as well as personal events in my own life when making these

“The desire to include one’s own body in the design is very archetypal and not new. With my casts of people’s body parts, I try to bring something personal and unmistakable into an aesthetic form. The 1970s were characterized by a radical upheaval in the culture of jewelry. My conception of jewelry was also altered by my intensive contacts with trends in the visual arts of that decade. I was searching for greater immediacy. Jewelry without a special connection to the person who wears it or who commissioned it seemed arbitrary and anonymously interchangeable. Casts of body parts such as the ears, nose, mouth, nipples, neck, hands and above all fingerprints became my working material.” — G.R.

hi, i discovered you a few days ago, and i just wanted to let you know i'm doing a small project (a 3 minute power point presentation) on you for my jewelry and metals class! (i go to an art university)
love your stuff, especially the uncomfortable ring series, and especially the uranium ring.
it reminds me of long-term nuclear waste warning message architecture :)
I am flattered that you'd do a presentation on me! My "Uncomfortable Ring" series is a real deep cut; I've always liked that series despite how critical I've become about my early work. (This was made in 2009 when I was like, 19 mind you.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that you mention it there is a really striking visual connection to that spike field imagery, and I wish I was clever enough for that to have been intentional.
The truth is way sillier: I wanted to use uranium glass in one of the rings for this series, but at the time I couldn't find any that I could afford. So I ended up on eBay where I paid $8.50 for a bunch of uranium glass shards that someone found in a dumpster.
It came in a cool plastic tube though--which I actually managed to find in my closet while writing this!
