I remember when I was 13, a friend of mine got this software after his mother bought it at Costco.
We were big into the early internet scene at the time, and a big thing were webcomics. We both wanted to make them, and PSP8 was a dead simple image editing software that was easy for us to grasp. Up until this point we were exclusively using MS Paint--and holy shit, PSP8 was such an advances, space-aged software that it let you press CTRL+Z more than three times!
Especially because, unlike programs like Photoshop which would throw a cryptic error message at you or play an error sound effect when you did something the wrong way, PSP8 would explain why what you did wouldn't work, and then ask if you wanted the program to, say, automatically change a vector layer to a raster layer so you can use the paint bucket tool. The UI was also laid out in a very intuitive and straightforward way. I learned more about how image editing software works by messing around in this program than I did from reading the documentation that came with my pirated copy of the totally legit copy of Photoshop I found on a reputable website at a massive 100% off discount.

Anyway, the two of us shared software frequently, and I remember he brought the disc over and in my stupid child brain I thought "well, surely I can copy this software just by... taking all the folders on the disc and shoving them into my C: drive right?" This plan was, in retrospect, absolutely fucking stupid and not at all how software should install itself onto your system.
Tumblr media
Except that it did work, and all you needed to do was double click the .exe file. I kept that "Jasc Software Inc" folder on every subsequent PC I've built. I actually used PSP8 in college even though I was going to an art college where I learned how to use Photoshop.
I even found the folder on my current PC and booted the software up. It works despite being in a folder somewhere on my F: drive.
Tumblr media
Just messing around with it for this post made me remember how quirky and fun this program is--in a way that modern image editors would never dare to be. And while I wasn't able to stand toe-to-toe with the people using Photoshop at the time, I sure was able to make some dumb shit for YTMND and various web forums.
Shame the company that made this software got acquired by another company that would end up shoving literal spyware into a subsequent version of it, which poisoned any good will people had left for them.

I Can Think of 1,312 Reasons Not to Trust the BPD's Recollection of Events
It's nice to see the youth keeping up the tradition of peacefully protesting, and then having the Boston Police Department respond with a completely disproportionate escalation of violence. It鈥檚 downright nostalgic considering what we are seeing at Emerson College is exactly what I saw happen first hand in the late 2010s during and after the Occupy Boston protests. You鈥檇 think after a decade and change the BPD would stop being scared shitless of unarmed liberal arts majors in their early 20s, but here we are.
It鈥檚 uncanny: we're seeing the exact same playbook from the police, while the media trips over themselves to find ways to minimize their brutality. Just as before, many media outlets are trying to sweep the bodily harm inflicted on the protesters under the rug, while obsequiously reporting on the poor officers who got kinda hurt while they were wearing full riot gear to beat the ever-loving shit out of unarmed protestors.
But to anyone who has been paying attention, the BPD have proven time and time again that they are a gang of heavily-armed thugs who are just itching for any excuse to use the fancy military-grade gear that we paid for with our tax dollars. (Though it is funny how they never seem to use those bullet-proof vests or other tactical gear when heavily-armed militant white supremacists protest...)
None of this surprises me anymore; the police in Massachusetts are openly corrupt to a downright cartoonish degree. Even in my home town that is 40 minutes west of Boston, you have officers who are lionized by officials despite being infamous amongst the community鈥攂ecause when they are off-duty they've worked as hired goons for the local mega-landlord to rough up tenants who are late on rent.
As the news coverage continues, remember not to give the police the benefit of the doubt nor any good will, and remember that the media has a history of downplaying their actions while taking their side. Also, do not let them gaslight you into thinking this is a freak occurrence鈥攂ecause this is standard operating procedure.
But above all else, remember that all cops are bastards.

I had to explain to a coworker why I have a Spotify playlist named "Thursday" with just one song in it.

SCP object concept: book which the Foundation believes contains a lethal, communicable infohazard, but the truth is that if you learn specific facts which are contained in the book, a squad of gnomes comes and kills you, then makes it look like an accident. The gnomes possess some anomalous means of being alerted that someone has learned the proscribed facts, but are otherwise mundane in their capabilities; they're simply very sneaky.
