I see some work I need to do around the eye & nose area as well as deepen some crevices and pick off crumbles. But this Smilodon figurine is closer to being molded than I remembered.
My first project in Metalsmithing this semester! These are cast in bronze using the lost wax casting technique! The spoon didn't completely fill as you can see but I'm so happy that the other two came out PERFECTLY in tact
I was inspired by 'Cutlery' by uki3 as well as personal events in my own life when making these
One of the things that's been on the back burner for a while was my, naive, ambitious declaration to participate in Swordtember. Which, oddly enough has gotten a couple notes lately so, thank you for appreciating my past efforts.
My stumbling block had been, realizing just, how chunky and heavy, the guard and pommel would be, easily outweighing the entire blade. I spent a lot of time removing additional material from the guard, and then took large chunks off the pommel before needing to redesign it's details. Also decided to add a spacer in the middle both to lengthen the handle, and because I felt it would look nice.
If the balance on this piece ends up horrendous, well, the prompt was Mirror, and the handle is supposed to look like a fancy hand mirror, while the scalloped blade would look, somewhat like a fractured mirror. I still have to fix some bevels on the blade, and with the move I can no longer do bronze casting at home (not that I ever did it successfully for detailed pieces) so I am reaching out to my makerspace to use their facilities to bring these wax carvings to life.
I am going to finish a Smilodon gem eyed pendant or die trying.
…I am also going to finish a wolf gem eyed pendant or die trying. Going to go carve at that one after Smilodon for maximum fresh eyes. Hopefully it shouldn’t take TOO long…
Spent a week in a silver casting course, and brought back much more than I had planned! It's been a while since I've done any jewelry casting or sculpture, so it was fun getting back into that headspace. (Still in need of some cleanup and polishing)
Finally been finding the energy to pull this one out again. My, 2022 swordtember project for the prompt, Mirror.
Been trying to reduce a lot of mass on the guard since my estimates would have had its bronze cast outweighing the blade itself.
As for the blade itself I've done a lot of sanding and have been working on the bevels. Once I get that closer to its final shape I'll have to do the heat treat and clean it up once more.
