morgan's quick and messy "timeskip timeline" notes

hello! providing my very off the cuff notes for what we know about the things Mello and Near got up to during the time between L's death and when we see them again in canon. one day i will do a more thorough timeline covering the second arc in detail but for now i want to focus just on the timeskip :3

please note that i think it is great to play with the timeline and i vigorously support canon divergence. including just straightup ignoring the timeline. do whatever you want forever.

In December 2004, Mello and Near learn of L's death. Mello runs away from Wammy's and strikes out on his own.

From this point until March 2009, Near is working on his own [the FBI director tells the president this in the manga during Near's meeting w/ the president that precedes the formation of the SPK]. We aren't given any clues as to where this work was taking place; my assumption has always been that he was doing this at Wammy's since no governmental agencies are implied to be involved in his work until March 2009 [though presumably he's in contact with the FBI a little earlier than this to set up the meeting that precedes the formation of the SPK]. Light has taken the official role of L, so there's no way for anyone outside of Wammy's to know that Near is [as the FBI director puts it] "L's true successor."

On Mello's side, we have no specifics on what he's up to from December 2004 to approximately April 2008. Rod says in the manga that Mello has been with them for a year and a half; he says this in October 2009, so that makes April 2008 roughly when Mello succeeded in joining Rod's gang [by "bringing in the head of a rival mob boss even Kira couldn't kill" or something to that effect]. The only other thing we really know Mello does in between December 2004 and October 2009 [when he has the NPA director kidnapped] is that he gets in contact with Ill Ratt [lmao] shortly after the formation of the SPK, and has Ratt acting as his spy within the SPK to feed him information about Near's progress. Matt doesn't begin to work with Mello until November 2009.

there's a chance i'm missing something here because again these are Quick And Messy notes but !! there is my rapidfire overview of the canon info on the matter. i have my own thoughts / headcanons on the specifics, but that is not within the scope of this post so i will save that for another day :3

something that I find so interesting and important about Mello’s character is the way he gives us a glimpse into the perspective of a criminal organisation in a world under Kira’s reign. up to this point, L has been the main antagonist to Kira with the task force presented as support in achieving his goals, so we have primarily seen the perspective of people who are in law enforcement/generally on the side of justice. it does, of course, make perfect sense for law enforcement to be against Kira, as Kira both threatens their roles in society and also commits crimes of his own in doing so. when Near is introduced, his perspective is shown to be similar, as he recruits a team of FBI and CIA agents to work alongside him.

but it follows that criminals in Death Note would also feel threatened by Kira’s reign given that they are his primary targets. Mello uses this to his advantage by teaming up with a criminal organisation whom he knows will have a motive to aid him in his goal of defeating Kira, and who will also be harder for Kira to track down and kill. the way Rod Ross, as the leader of the mafia, reacts to and talks about the Death Note is very unique compared to what we’ve seen from L and the task force up to this point. he sees Kira as a threat to his gang, and believes that by acquiring the Death Note, the mafia will only continue to become more powerful. this perspective is super interesting to see, and it also shows how intelligent Mello is given he recognised this opportunity to exploit the gang’s resources by getting them onboard with a goal that is easy for them to agree with.

this is also another way in which we see Near and Mello depicted as the two halves of L. L teams up with anyone who he believes he can use to achieve his means, whether that be the police, death row criminals like Lind L. Tailor, or minor criminals he has recruited as allies over the years - namely Aiber and Wedy. Near exclusively works with members of government organisations, law enforcement and anti-Kira groups to fight against Kira (though the SPK does technically become an illegal organisation), while Mello exclusively works with criminals or through illegal means, thus each representing one subgroup within L’s allies.

I know these are supposed to be silly and quick I just have too many thoughts and I wanted to do all of them instead of one or the other *__*

3. Mello-Drinking Headcanon

I think Mello doesn't drink much on his own. Like he's not the type to just drink at home by himself (unless he's REALLY going through something) but when he's out on the town he will. And because of it I actually think he would be a total lightweight. And he just starts rambling like CRAZY when he's drunk. The guys in his gang never mention it the next morning because they're too scared to lose a finger, but Mello seems to have a lot of things he really hates??? Like SUPER specific seemingly unrelated things that he will just go on and on about. Like when their waiter had bleached silver-white hair he went on a 30 minute tirade about how people with white hair just think they're so special and pretty and they how they need to be put in their place. Or when the bar they go to has giant jenga and he loses so badly he goes on a tare about how anyone that is good at board games and puzzles are actually just big dumb idiots.

4. Mello-Angry headcanon

This one stumped me a bit because I feel like we see Mello angry so often in canon that it's hard to think of a headcanon for it. But the more I thought about it I realized that it's a big headcanon of mine that Mello fixates about things he gets angry about. Like even if he feels less angry after the fact he cannot stop thinking about it, even if it's to think about how stupid he was about getting angry in the first place. This will only take place in his head though, he will absolutely not be telling anyone that he is thinking he could ever be wrong.

9.Near-Childhood headcanon

I think when Near came to Wammy's he was VERY little. I don't have much of a headcanon about his birth family since I also think he has almost no memory of them, just flashes here and there that are more sense memories. Though I do headcanon him as half Korean and half Dutch (doesn't work super well with the entomology of the surname River, but fuck it we ball). When he's brought to Wammy's I usually think he's about 4-5 and non-verbal. He shows a lot of signs of heightened intelligence which is what lands him in Wammy's instead of a regular orphanage, but I think before they can figure out how to work with him, Near ends up having a lot of melt downs. With the way the orphanage handles things the other kids don't really see it but Near has a lot of screaming, crying fits before they find a reliable way for him to communicate.

13.Near-Sex headcanon

Idk if this will be a controversial headcanon but I think once Near has had sex a few times and becomes more comfortable with it after "solving the puzzle" of something new, he is absolutely insatiable and is the one initiates the most often. I really only see him with Mello so I always think that in a world where something happens between them and he gets to this point, the moment people leave the room and they're alone he gives Mello this look-

Halloween season! So monster AU Lawlight. What do you think they would be? The rest of the cast?

Fun question!! I'd say in a Haloween setting we'd have:

Light: Demon, particularly one with powers of compulsion, contracts, and death. Makes a contract in exchange for a life, the contractees never get what they think they will and all end up dying of heart attacks. Alias Kira, goal to purify the world. He's a pretty young supernatural, only a year old after dying as a human at 23. Demons are humans or supernaturals that died with unfilfilled desires, but ones so strong they become demons rather than ghosts. Helps if they contracted another demon before dying. They can also very sucessfully pass as the human/super they used to be, making them difficult to find.

L: Vampire, very old and powerful, has spent most of the last few decades napping. May or may not have been due to an epic sugar crash. He heard Demon blood tastes wonderfully sweet from an anonymous source and now wants to confirm >v>. Goal: to have cake and nibble on Kira.

Misa: Witch, she's been working ages to make a love potion that works on a demon. Has been unsuccessful. In the meantime tries her best to kill L with unique spells. Also unsuccessfully. A very powerful witch as she has a demon familiar who shares her powers with Misa.

Rem: Demon familair, Misa's in particular. Her original form was something aquatic, deep sea horror-type supernatural. She bound herself to Misa willingly out of love and gave Misa full access to her powers. That's why Misa is a very powerful witch despite still being human, and why Light keeps her around.

Ryuk: Also a demon, but uncontracted. Was a tengu before dying. He was the one that made a deal with Light was the latter was human, and the reason Light was reborn as a demon after dying. Is having the time of his life.

Mello: Vamp, sired by L so he took some of his traits. Mello was dying one night from a gang fight and L saved him and then just vanished. Mello wants to meet L to ask him why he turned him. He's competitive against Near. Doesn't try to control his bloodlust at all, and becomes the head of the mafia that killed him in a very brutal takeover.

Near: Also a Vamp sired by L, doesn't care as much as Mello does, but is still curious to meet him. Was half-fae on his mother's side but no one knew it since he was an orphan, the fact that he managed to turn successfully into a Vamp shocked a lot of people. Is under constant watch by the US government. He can control his bloodlust very well and has muted emotions. He's ambivalent to Mello.

Matt: Sylph, electric specifically. Likes to static shock people for fun. Was Mello's friend when he'd been human but didn't tell him about the supernatural community. He and Mello are sometimes at odds because of it since Mello thought they'd told each other everything, considering they grew up together.

Watari: Mad Scientist/Professor Fankenstein type. Can bring inanimate objects to life. He woke L from a very long sleep and now works with him to police the unruly supernatural community in exchange for the blood of criminals L catches. His main goal is to stop Kira.

Kiyomi: Siren, her voice and words can compel people to believe her. Acts as Kira's public voice. She thinks her voice works on Light; it does not.

Mikami: Werewolf or werecat. Hates it. His main goal in life is to be able to suppress his animalistic transformation completely. Hates both humans and the supernatural community, loves Kira for culling them.

Matsuda: Wizard. Very bad at it lmao, but born into a powerful family so he has access to a lot of good tools and relics for hunting demons.

Soichiro, Sayu, Sachiko: All human, Light's family whom he still protects. Light pretends to be human still and lives close to them. Soichiro knows about supernaturals since he works in the government, and has his suspicions of Light.

Rest of the cast: a menagerie of humans and otherwise, but my brain is tired. In general, the governments of every country know about this but keep it quiet for public panic reasons.

So, yeah, thanks for the fun question!! It ended up turning into a whole AU with background involved lmao.

Some fd up mello hcs below...

As a result of his grandfather's violent attempts at subduing his unruly nature, little Mello was extremely defiant towards authority and quick to turn to verbal and physical aggression. As he gets older, his moods remain just as volatile but he learns to (mostly) manage his anger, a feat often accomplished by sublimating it into delightfully vicious fantasies.

Has always been utterly fascinated by torture, loving nothing more than to learn all about its history, different types and techniques. He never really planned to use that knowledge on anyone (although it's probably come in handy at some point in his mafia era, let's be real), the only times he's enjoyed tormenting someone (outside of a bdsm session) have been when he's subjected Matt to horror literature exposure therapy back in Wammy's.

Has daddy issues. In the way he blames his mother unaliving herself on his father disappearing on her. He still holds onto vengeful intents towards him, wonders if that'd finally cut whatever tie he might still have with such a dishonorable individual, or if then he'd simply be the only one left to blame.

As part of his inferiority complex, deep down he really believes he's wicked, hated by God, with no hopes to succeed in anything good or be saved. Upon seeing them for them first time, he can't help but think that the burns are the manifestation of his curse, his own undeniable mark of Cain.

Very manipulative, we know, but the thing is he doesn't do it on purpose. He just can't stand to even risk being controlled, coming out on top is a priority in relationships, too, so his default approach is to read people like books, dangle anything they want in front of them and get them to do his bidding. Does he like them? Does he hate them? Doesn't matter: once done with them he'll leave them in shambles anyway! (If they're lucky)

Speaking of which... Mello's a genius, not an assassin. His original plan for that one mafia boss was never to take him out himself, but rather to groom the guy's malcontent son to do the dirty work. Which the young man did. Only to come back home in a confusional state twenty minutes later to Mello decapitating daddy's corpse– thus becoming his first kill. Shortly followed by mommy. Then Mello finished the job, put his backpack in the freezer and took a bath in the jacuzzi to make himself presentable again before leaving.

After the events of November 11/12, he can't shake a sense of impending doom, death closing in on him, thanks to an intoxicating mix of being reminded of his failures every time he got a glimpse of himself, having an entire gang on his conscience (on top of all the other deaths and suffering he'd caused) a touch of ptsd and the crawling desperation to be victorious for once and therefore know some kind of redemption. So when he gets the call he's quite ready to step in, you know?

I think that in his mind Mello has enough reasons to hate himself already so he decided that he wouldn't be ashamed of anything else, wouldn't be made to apologize for who he is or let anyone shame him. Whatever it takes, he will stand tall and proud. And that obviously includes his sexuality.

I think that not only he doesn't hide his queerness, but he also explicitly demonstrates it, daring anyone who is brave (or stupid) enough to judge him. After all, Mello walked like that™ around mafia, who I doubt would be very tolerant and accepting. But he proved himself to be so useful and competent that they had no choice but to respect him and listen to him. That must've been a great boost to Mello's confidence and self-esteem.

Though I imagine from time to time little occasions when someone tries to voice their disapproval would still occur. Like I have this scene in my head:

Some new guy joins the gang and sees our Mello for the first time, dressed in leather from head to toe, wearing black lipstick, listening to Lady Gaga and sitting on the couch like he owns the place. And he exclaims without thinking twice "who the fuck is this fag-". Someone shushes him but it's already too late, Mello heard him. Mello stops eating his chocolate, gives the guy the stare that would be able to scare a shinigammi and says "Yes, I'm gay. You have a problem with that?" The guy swallows and utters something like "N-no. Not at all". Then a nonchalant expression returns to Mello's face. "That's what I thought" he says, then turns up the music and starts singing along.
