I'm trying to pinpoint why I am inherently rubbed the wrong way by a post I saw that was like "oh I can't see genderbend x shipped with canon y" because while normally it's not my jam it's also not something I'm like 🤢 about, and then I clocked that the part I was kicking against was the implication in the last sentence, which was:

"she's too cool for him."

She is the SAME. CHARACTER. When you do a genderbend they should basically be the same character, MAYBE with some societal gender differences from being raised afab or amab depending on how you are genderbending. If an amab version of the character picks his nose then probably the afab version does as well! If the afab version is really obsessed with her looks and presentation and an outward appearance of perfection, then the amab version should ALSO do that (perhaps instead of makeup they get obsessed with presenting traditional masculinity! OR they STILL get obsessed with skincare and clothing etc. it's just all to further masculine presentations instead of feminine! You can have so many options).

And also the weird layer too of, "even though this character has a popular poly ship and a good/fun (in this case, female) love interest, I only ship the two men of the popular polycule."

I don't think this is inherently bad, but when coupled with the concept that a female version of the character would not be shipped with a male version of the character, it paints a very.... specific picture of placing your female characters on a pedestal so you don't actually have to interact with them. An implication that any woman is going to be "too cool" just on the basis of her gender presentation.

Fernando 2012 Chair Lore (source: me)

So I've been thinking a lot about Fernando sitting in this particular chair in the Ferrari garage in 2012 for [redacted] reasons:

Originally I just wanted to find more pictures of it for reference, and then went down a rabbit hole of 2012 pictures, trying to figure out when exactly the chair came to be. There's so many pictures of him in it, and it's so funny to me to imagine them hauling this super villain chair all around the world for him. And so now I'm obsessed with the evolution of it:

Pre-Chair - Australia to Bahrain:

He just had this little stool, well I should say big because it somehow still manages makes him look small. Clearly not comfortable; to paraphrase @sweatyflytrap, it's not conducive to his inner Shakespeare villain monologues

The Chair Appears - Spain

He suddenly now has this, aforementioned, super villain chair. Several things, why is it like this. It looks like a sim chair almost ngl. And then the weird plexiglass support is confusing me, like where did they get that. It furthers my narrative they just had this chair that they couldn't put in a car so they put that clear bottom on it. Anyways yes good, now he has somewhere to brood

mizutaigen is literally like. the first "toxic" m/f ship i've ever cared for. cuz like usually my taste in m/f ships is basically "unhinged baddie" x "badass wifeguy" *

* (see:yen/geralt. trevor/sypha. adolin/shallan. kataang but katara is sane and they're literally so wholesome like theyre traumatised kids in love who are each other's emblem of hope in a war-torn world! so basically they don't count. anyway. i'm rambling.)

and to that end my friend called mizutaigen yaoi-adjacent and im like. yeah you're right actually cuz like hell yeah non-binary mizu and bisexual taigen rights and all the gender fuckery in the show in general

but also like.

theres just SOMETHING else about mizutaigen that just GETS me. like there's a special secret sauce like the pheromones in that one sephora lotion attracting spiders and i am the silly spider!!! there's just something about it!!! it's not even the enemies to lovers trope cuz i personally am not even usually into that (obv it's fine if you are. but yk.)

so as i keep rotating these thoughts around i thiiink it's the fact that, yknow, theyre so similar. like i honestly truly think they could be besties in another universe: a kinder universe where taigen was not taught to hate. a universe where mizu was not born a girl in a deeply misogynistic society or half-white in a xenophobic homogeneous society.

yeah now that i think about it that really just might be THE secret sauce!!! like the fact that they COULD be perfect and happy together, if only things were different, if only they werent themselves.

Shuggy being a case of fandom loving pretty boys is so on point. I’m active on both the anti and proshipping sides of the fandom, and for antis the hate is the usual. But I was surprised by the visceral hatred I’d see for shuggy from some proshippers I knew. It’s always Buggy they hate because they find him too nasty and unappealing to fit into their kinks/romantic fantasies. Even the ones with the worst problematic ships I’ve seen would shit on the idea of seeing Buggy romantically, and i feel it’s because they can’t make Buggy into either a pretty baby boy bottom or a hot daddy hunk.

But the thing that haters from both sides had in common? They only liked m|m ships with the goodlooking and cool characters, and never the ‘unattractive and annoying’ characters.

Majority of the time, the fans who devote themselves to characters like Usopp, Ceaser Clown, Gecko Moria, Vinsmoke brothers, i never see a word from them complaining about shuggy or Buggy ships.

The fans that keep hating are the ones that can only accept m|m ships with characters they see as aesthetically pleasing, so they can envision them as pure both visually outside and character-wise inside. I feel so much about it is this obsession with purity and conventional attractiveness. (sorry to come in and rant i saw that ask and my experiences flashed before my eyes because i been in this fandom too long)

Yeah, no, I haven't been in this fandom that long but you're definitely right. And it happens in every fandom, too. People only like to ship characters they feel attracted to and, well, I can't judge because that's just how everybody's personal experience and journey in the fandom is and if I don't like it I will simply just ignore these people. But it's always so frustrating to see really great characters with a lot of potential get ignored just because they don't fit the beauty standard people want.
