Anime Japan Day Two: Heavy Hitters Make Their Appearance

With day two of Anime Japan complete, it's pretty safe to say that we saw some impressive trailers for some of the big names of the anime world. Alongside them though, quite a few younger and less-popular studios showed up big time with incredibly surprising PVs.

An interesting mix across the board, there's plenty of anime trailers and announcements from the last 24 hours, and I talk about all the good ones in detail at Animehouse.

After seeing the first couple trailers of Mayonaka Punch, it seems like Masaki x Live (Ribu) might possibly become a yuri ship by the looks of it so far.

For instance, when Masaki took a video of Live (Ribu) who looked to be walking on the ceiling (I’ll get to that), she had a nosebleed visible on the second picture. Compiling screenshots together, it looks like as soon as Live (Ribu) first glimpses Masaki, she immediately seems to fall head over heels for her to the point of pursuing her through the hallway upside-down.

And then, when Masaki seems to fall and if I may theorize, Live (Ribu) would save her life by catching her whilst she’s falling while Live would fly.

This leads into my predictive theory for the show: what if Live (Ribu) and the rest of the Mayonaka Punch channel members (preferably the rest of the main cast) were in fact vampires?

In this pic, wings can be seen on Live (Ribu) as she was possibly trying to fly towards Masaki or something. Plus, the majority of the series from the footage so far take place in nighttime… Don’t know if the vampire element may happen or not, but we all may have to wait and see what happens when it starts airing this summer. If it turns out to come true, it may as well be the best anime twist since Brave Bang Bravern.

UPDATE: I just read the first chapter of the Mayonaka Punch manga preceding the anime’s release in July, and I’m so excited to say it’s confirmed that Live/Ribu is a vampire! We may be seeing one of the best bait-and-switches of all time with this one.

Don’t know if it’s okay to put pics from the manga, but I really hope I don’t get in trouble if I did.

“Isn’t that reasonable?” the golden-eyed young lady said before another slurp. “Oh, my hair was falling apart before the last cut—I can’t believe it got on camera! And my gloves, they really are so delicate, they ripped right here by the elbow. I must have been too excited—ohh, what will miss manager say…” “Manager?”

Excerpt of GSA SL AU's MTS where the IT try to find Yukiko in her castle. Nothing much besides literally showing the Midnight Channel's "behind the scenes."

“Cut!” the princess’ voice echoed through the set’s made-up halls of prop walls. The castle’s dramatic lights shut of while more structured ones turned on, and smaller Shadows were out and about. Some stouter than others, even taller but skinner than others. Some looked… relieved.

Yosuke noticed those who emerged from behind the walls drag themselves out tiredly, and others gently put down what they were carrying. Was this the crew behind the camera? The extra set of eyes that were on them to monitor what they had been doing?

Speaking of eyes, that piercing sensation of being watched suddenly washed away, as if the cameras stopped rolling for a while. The four watched the non-hostile Shadows begin congregating somewhere behind the set’s walls. Although, they were still vigilant some would still act violent towards them. So they scuttled their way into that same little room from whatever nonsense instinct they had instead of pushing forward.

The way the Shadows walked together looked like a flood of black sludge among the cool low lying mist, but at this point the little group of four-eyed comrades and a teddy bear knew they wouldn’t be harmed… as long as they didn’t make much of a fuss. Like those poor Shadows from earlier, holding measuring tape and a clipboard that ran away when Chie-chan stood in her crane stance yelling her signature “hiyaaa!”

Was it a buffet? No, it looked more like a… catering service? Who knew Shadows could eat… then again, they didn’t really know what they were “eating.” On a plastic table with a matching plastic chair, they heard the rather inelegant slurping of a regular girl. I guess even the princess needs to take breaks from being a princess.

“Isn’t it reasonable?” the golden-eyed young lady said before taking another slurp. “Oh, my hair was falling apart before the last cut—I can’t believe it got on camera! And my gloves, they really are so delicate, they ripped right here by the elbow. I must have been too excited—ohh, what will miss manager say…”

“Manager?” Yosuke asked, tilting his head and fixing his headphones. “—Before that, what’s going on?”

“It’s a break! Don’t you want one? You can’t run around shooting yourself willy nilly. A good production needs time no matter how cheap it is. It’s all being provided for already and—Oh! And help yourself too, would you?” she rambled on and handed them three food stamps with her ungloved hands. “You’re my special guests! I wouldn’t really have this show without you. Pick out something you like. Chie, I’m sure there’s still soba left over. The heated water’s right there if you need it.”

“There’s only three,” Sensei commented.

“Yes, for my guests?”

“What about me?” Teddie said with a little flap in his ear.

“Hm? Don’t you have one already? —Ah, you must be new here, I have an extra somewhere around…” she patted around her synthetic satin gown after wiping the soup from her lips. “Hm…” she went as she scratched her needed-to-be touched up hair and finally took her gloves from the table. A single stamp fell out and the friendly black-haired host gently gave it to the bear.

Hiya Papaya! 👋

There's one thing i noticed: It feels like social media, as a motive, in anime appears more and more.

It started with Oshi no ko where i was pleasantly suprised when things like X (formally twitter) or YouTube appeared.

Now there's currently Viral Hit and Jellyfish can't swim in the night running and next season we got anime like Mayonaka Punch and VTuber Legend raring to go.

Don't get me wrong, it's not bad at all. It feels a bit weird to see the start of a new era, which social media will be a pretty common topic.

I'm actually kinda hyped to see it because i wasted spent a lot of time using social media and i can relate even more now. Also, when do we get a drama anime which is based on X (formally twitter) and its many many dramatic dumpster fires?

Spring 2019 Anime Worth Watching

Feeling buried under all the new anime content season after season? Well the new spring anime season is upon us, so here’s some stuff worth watching if you’re lost in the sea of shows. Also in case you were sleeping last season, here’s some Winter 2019 Anime You Should Watch too!

New Shows!

Carole and Tuesday: A sci-fi anime that tells the story of a pampered rich girl named Tuesday who runs away to the big city to pursue her love of music and starts a band with a streetwise girl named Carole. Aka, the music lesbian one directed by the Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo guy. IF YOU ONLY WATCH ONE NEW SHOW THIS SEASON, MAKE IT THIS ONE! It by far has the most amazing visuals, easy to connect with story, and obviously the best music...and this is after just one episode. It’s one of those shows you can tell will be memorable from the first five minutes!

Hitoribocchi: A startlingly accurate high school comedy, in which a girl with extreme anxiety must learn to make friends at her new middle school in order to get her one friend from elementary school to talk to her again. It is sweet, hilarious, and very on the nose considering pretty much everyone who watches anime has been this type of person at some point.

Fruits Basket 2019: In case you hadn’t become anime trash yet in 2001: after the death of her mother, stereotypical protagonist Tooru Honda starts living in a tent in the woods...only to be taken in by the mysterious Sohma family...who can turn into animals from the zodiac when they’re hugged by a member of the opposite sex. It’s the remake of the 2001 anime that basically introduced an entire generation to the concept of shoujo. In an age of revamping every property from your childhood to hit you with a nostalgia bomb, this one is pretty well deserved...because this time they’re going to follow the manga! Tooru’s a little less annoyingly air headed this time, and it’s as beautifully animated as you’d expect!

Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba: A shounen anime following a young boy and his sister who is possessed by a demon, who must find a way to turn her back to normal after their entire family is slaughtered. It’s pretty basic so far, but there is a lot of potential. Apparently the manga is very hyped up, and it’s easy to get invested in the characters’ safety. And it’s made by Ufotable so...at least it will look interesting.

Kono Oto-tomare! (Stop this Sound!): After his senpais graduate, Takezou Kurata becomes the only member of his high school Koto club, and the only other member who wants to join is a delinquent who annoys the hell out of him. What’s Koto you ask? It’s a traditional Japanese stringed instrument that no one really cares about of course! It’s a standard high school comedy/drama where the animation budget has been spent on shots of the characters picking the Koto strings. But it’s still fun and sweet with a focus on an instrument I know nothing about...and don’t try and convince me the two main characters aren’t into each other.

Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin (Midnight Occult Civil Servants): A comedy/detective show about a government branch that works out the disputes of various supernatural creatures. So far, it runs in the same vein as The Morose Mononokean, but it’s a little early to tell how seriously it will take itself. If nothing else, watch it for the adorable size difference between an enormous angel and an Edward Elric sized Tengu who are in a forbidden relationship. I don’t know if they’ll come back, but I’m into the world the show has created.

RobiHachi: A sci-fi buddy comedy about a laughably hopeless loser who blasts into space while running away from debt collectors. Little did he know, he accidentally brought one of the collectors with him, and now the two must embark on a journey to the perfect city of Isekandar...which is most likely just a well advertised tourist trap. Also the ship turns into a giant robot. It’s a fun, if a bit ridiculous, romp that is extremely reminiscent of Space Dandy. It is all a technicolor mess of “what the hell is going on?”... but in a fun way! And speaking of technicolor messes that make you question your sanity…

Sarazanmai: I don’t even know what the plot of this one is. It has the gay cops you’ve probably seen around the internet...and also kappas that go up people’s butts to get some sort of “desire organ”...? It basically feels like a really outrageous magical boy show where the main characters transform into kappas to… fight evil kappas and make people reveal secrets before they regain their human forms I guess. Yeah it’s a wild ride, and it’s definitely not for everyone. But it has some of the best animation this season, and I encourage people to give it a chance, even if it’s just to understand why the internet is screaming about it.

Second Seasons and Continuations

Dororo: I mentioned this in my winter anime post, and I’m talking about it again because it’s getting 24 episodes, and EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH IT! So in case you missed it the first time, it’s a dark and surprisingly feelsy remake of the original 1969 manga about a warrior whose limbs and organs were traded to demons when he was a baby. So in typical anime fashion he must travel across the country killing demons to get his limbs back with the help of a lovable scamp named Dororo. There is lots of action, family drama, humor, and a very compelling story about good and evil. The main character doesn’t even speak until almost halfway through the anime, and he was still the most interesting main character of the winter season. It’s an early contender for anime of the year, so PLEASE DON’T SLEEP ON IT!

The Rising of the Shield Hero: Another leftover from the winter season, it’s...an isekai...wait, wait, I PROMISE IT’S WORTH WATCHING...about a hero who is framed for a crime and must walk the line between redemption and revenge while still doing his job as a hero and saving people who have scorned him. Also the other heroes who are supposed to be saving the world...kind of fuck everything up all the time, and he has to fix everything. Apparently there’s a controversy around the show because of the first episode and the crime he is framed for. All I have to say is...just watch the show past the first episode, and make your own decision. It’s a fun action/adventure story that keeps you interested all the way through.

Bungo Stray Dogs season 3: An action/drama detective anime about a mysterious organization filled with superhuman detectives who protect the city from all sorts of threats. Think Kekkai Sensen but in Japan. Okay, confession time: the first two seasons were good, with amazing animation and likable characters...but I remember almost nothing about the actual plot, so I probably won’t watch this right away. But it’s definitely worth mentioning because of the massive fandom and love everyone has for this show.

Ace of Diamond act 2: It’s the shounen baseball anime! I really don’t know how to else do describe it. I love sports anime, but this one can fall into the trap of making small things drag on forever. Still, I love this team and I want to see them succeed!

One Punch Man season 2: The long awaited second season of One Punch Man! The story of a man who’s a hero for fun and can defeat any foe with a single punch. I know we’re all upset that it switched from Madhouse to J.C Staff, and while yes that means the action isn’t as amazing, the rest of the time it just looks...different...not bad. I think if we go too hard on the studio change, it makes it seem like there was nothing special about OPM besides its animation. Can we just give it to Bones next season? They seem to know what they’re doing with Mob Psycho 100.

And we’re still waiting on Attack on Titan season 3 part 2, but hopefully it will be as well animated as usual and make sense of the jumbled mess the manga became.

Also I know this came out last season, but I would like to formally apologize for not including in my winter list…

The Promised Neverland: A horror/thriller anime focusing on the children of Grace Field House, an orphanage where everyone is a happy family and there are definitely no deep dark terrible secrets about what happens to the children who leave the house at all...right? It’s the one where characters have tiny mouths. This is my other contender for anime of the year because holy shit this was amazing. Like...I had to go read the manga immediately after finishing it amazing. If you haven’t given it a try or didn’t watch it because the characters just look so stupid...don’t make the same mistake I did and cast it aside. Also it just started airing in English on Toonami, so why not include it with this season!? It’s just that good!

What I am Looking Forward to for the Spring 2019 Season of Anime

As the winter season of anime comes to a close, the spring cherry blossom season arrives and it’s filled with tons of new anime. Looking at the spring lineup, there are plenty of interesting anime out there, some new and some returning. With that said, what will I be looking out for to watch this season? This season of anime has some pretty big names coming back, so let’s get those out of the way first.

Returning with the second half of its third season is of course is Attack on Titan. I’ve been looking forward to seeing the continuation of this anime as we were left knowing that big things were coming. The anime really left you with the craving for more and to see where the anime will go next. Knowing what is going to happen, I’m really excited to see certain chapters from the manga animated as some crazy events are about to go down. I’m sure the anime will just keep getting better and better from here as WIT studio has proven time and time again with every new season. From the music, to the animation, to the voice acting, the studio just keeps raising the bar for themselves and somehow surpasses it every time.

After four long years of waiting, One Punch Man is finally returning for its second season. However, there has been much criticism for what we have been shown. If you are not aware yet as to why, well the second season of One Punch Man is not being made by the same studio that made the phenomenal first season, Studio Madhouse. Instead J.C. Staff has picked up the project and you can definitely tell as the quality of animation has gone down quite a bit. This studio is known for producing popular anime such as Toradora and Food Wars, but after looking at the trailer, it doesn’t seem to promising. Many have speculated that there have been production issues when it came to making the anime and if there is then it definitely shows. I don’t have my hopes up too high for this, but I’ll still watch it and we’ll see what happens from there.

Bungou Stray Dogs, produced by Studio Bones, is returning for its third season and this is another anime coming out this season that I am really looking forward to. The first two seasons were amazing and I really enjoyed them, the same goes for the movie that was released a year ago. I thoroughly enjoy this story and I am excited to see where this story will go and what new enemies will arise for our characters. Looking at the trailer, it looks like this season will have a much darker tone to it, which makes me even more excited for this anime’s return. Moving on to the new anime for the season, first up that caught my eye is Kimetsu no Yaiba.

This anime is being made by studio Ufotable and right off the bat I am fairly intrigued. The story has to do with an ongoing battle between demons and demon-hunters, one day a boy’s happy family is met with tragedy when his family is slaughtered and his sister gets turned into a demon. When his sister is about to be finished off by a demon-hunter, her and her brother protect each other and after witnessing this they are sent to the demon-hunter’s mentor to be trained and so begins our main character’s journey as a demon-hunter to fight demons and to find a cure for his sister. The story seems interesting and knowing it’s being made by Ufotable, I’m expecting some some top tier animation especially when it comes to the action. I am also hoping this anime will have some really good music in it as seen in previous works by Ufotable, specifically referring to the Fate series.

The next anime that caught my eye is called Fairy Gone and it is made by P.A. Works. This anime is set in a world where faires possess and resides within animals, that grant them unique powers. These animals would have their organs transplanted into humans, giving them access to summon the fairy and utilize them as a weapon. These soldiers would be used in war and after the war ends, they have to reintegrate back into society. These soldiers would then take their own paths to reintegrate into society. I find the premises for this story to be very interesting and in a way reminds me of Violet Evergarden when it comes to soldiers reintegrating into society. I think that alone has a lot of potential when it comes to storytelling as there are so many routes that the character could take.

The last anime that caught my eye is Mayonaka no Occult Koumin which will be made by LIDEN FILMS.The story follows Miyako Arata, who is assigned to the Shinjuku Ward Office’s Nighttime Regional Relations Department, which is tasked to mitigate paranormal and occult-related events. I found the story to be fairly interesting upon first glance and hopefully it is. I automatically get drawn into anime involving the supernatural as it there are so many interesting stories that can be told and hopefully the same can be said about this anime when it comes out. These are all the anime that I am currently looking forward to for the spring 2019 season of anime. However, it is not just limited to these picks, I might check out other anime released this season that gain traction within the community.
