Same energy of a little kid finding a raccoon and bringing it home thinking it's a cat.
Warmup with the "taller lesbian picked up by shorter girlfriend" meme.
I can picture Raina just pouncing at Merrill right after going back from Inquisition matters. Merrill can't even be angry, she has her tall buff girlfriend on her, perched like a koala, purring loudly.
"I learnt this from the Inquisitor, she's right it's very very nice. 🥰💜"

Raina: Haha… Uh are you a relative? I'm not quite an expert in the Steele family tree-
Sorella: No, just a friend of the family. My Dad grew up with Tad. And my Grandma was good friends with Mrs. Steele.
Raina: Oh. Did you know Sadie? I never got to meet her.
Sorella: Not that well. I can sorta remember her and my Grandma hanging out in the garden a lot. That's about it though… Is Althea your mom?
Raina: No. Althea's like a godmother to me though. My mother refused to come. She doesn't approve of Cordy.
Sorella: Oh I'm sorry.
Raina: [shrugs] I expected as much. It's complicated with my mother and I.
Sorella: Mothers can be really complicated… Anyway, congratulations. The Steeles are the best.
Raina: Truer words have never been spoken. Thanks you.
Arturo: Ok everyone! Last track of the night, I have to get to bed at a somewhat reasonable hour.
Raina: I think that's our cue to leave.
Cordy: I think you're right.

20. Who do they like as a person but hate their work? Vice versa, whose work do they like but don’t like the person?
11. If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference?
56. If they’re scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear?
for darrash! <3
HIIIII HELLO HI HI HI
my blorbo. my boy. my guy. my little gender mongrel.
(from the weirdly specific asks)
20: Who do they like as a person but hate their work? Vice versa, whose work do they like but don’t like the person? (a) Hunter. He always agreed with Hunter's sentiments, and had verbally told him so before. He would have even helped him under the table had Hunter not decided to go the route of killing thousands just to prove a point. That's what he was trying to explain on the Tenebrous, before Hunter decided that mercy wasn't an option.
(b) Oh boy. Probably any given Moff. He respects being in charge of So Much, but he hates that power goes to peoples' heads and they start acting unwise. But it does make a nice Moff Hunting Season™ so hey, you win some you lose some you win some again.
11: If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference? Silly rabbit, you can't impersonate Darrash! Even when the Old Man gave up his beautiful plan to study Darrash on Tatooine through Mia, Darrash wasn't really acting like himself because he fucking hated Tatooine and was being a grump the whole time. If the Old Man went back to Intelligence and impersonated Darrash based on that, he wouldn't even make it to Dromund Kaas' orbital spaceport.
But if you really want to.. well, you'd just have to know him from day one. Darrash is a very unique blend of street rat and Imperial elite; he gets as far as he does because he knows how to blend in naturally - not like he's SUPPOSED to be there (an Imperial seeking to blend in) but like he's always been there (someone who legitimately grew up in these environments). His peers could easily tell he wasn't himself if he didn't offer a snarky retort at the orders given, or if he actually tried really hard on his assignments as opposed to just knowing how to not get himself fucked up in the process.
56: If they're scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear? Darrash would absolutely be seeking comfort from his loved ones.
Firstly, there is Vector. Vector would be his closest friend and confidant. His safe space, his lover, his most trusted companion outside of his own mind. This is his husband. His better conscious, his shining light.
Dr. Eckard Lokin and the Minister of Intelligence (formerly known as Colonel Tylado Bentismo, Watcher Seventeen, or Keeper) come afterwards as Darrash's adoptive fathers once he entered the realm of Intelligence. Tylado brought him in as a sort of pet project or guarantee for his promotion to Keeper, should he prove that he can create a top-notch operative for Intelligence and keep them alive with his remote guidance. He didn't count on accidentally gaining a reluctant son, nor actually seeing himself as a father. Darrash does fully trust him, not just implicitly, but genuinely. He loves him. He knows Tylado didn't have much of a choice once operations spun out of his hands, and Tylado is amazed that he is still .. well, alive.
Likewise, Eckard understands Darrash better than the Agent wants to admit. He's known him since his first day in Intelligence, having to conduct medical examinations and quickly learning that he needs to be heavily sedated beforehand. He doesn't like treating Darrash like an animal, as other officers have suggested, he sees Darrash as a genuine son. And Darrash, albeit feigning a grudge, sees him like a father alongside Tylado. (The two of them had been married for twenty years by the time Darrash came into the picture, and they both had their turns trying to raise and look after him without showing extraneous bias..)
Raina comes next, as Darrash's protégé and adoptive little sister. She's a tad rigid and rough around the edges but she means very well and is always ready to learn when she's made or experienced an error in her ways. She learns to trust herself first, and follow her gut in the field.

content warning: scars, unhealthy relationships, brief violence mention
failed relationships leave scars.
i know this from experience. my first-ever sort-of-boyfriend ended up lying to me (after kissing me against my will because some asshat dared him to―keep in mind i was like ten and he was fourteen) and then started dating his own cousin. the first guy i really considered a boyfriend (in sixth grade, but you know) had issues, and we were teased constantly about being “together” by literally everyone else in our grade; by the time we broke up, we had been fighting constantly about little shit, most of those fights started by him. then my next partner, who i’d only ever met online but liked talking to and had developed a crush on; they live in the same state that i do but it’s an hour and a half drive between us. every time i tried to set up a place and time to meet them irl and figure things out, they promised they would talk to their parents about it, and never did; or when they did, they never got back to me with the information. on top of that, we were fighting about little things like the star wars roleplay thing we had going on and bigger things like the miscommunication. my most recent girlfriend was a human disaster with a lot of shit going on in her life, but she kept using me as an emotional punching bag and starting fights about random little shit, usually involving a rock band of some sort but also about stuff like our friend’s ignorance of the harry potter universe.
are you sensing a theme yet?
i’m sick and tired of all the fighting. i’ve got a different rp thing going with a friend now and we’re disagreeing there too, because she keeps trying to include fights and i’m honestly scared that if i put something as large-scale as the kind of fights she’s trying to put our characters through onto paper it will somehow make it happen again. i can’t handle it―not when i already feel like i always fall for the wrong people, not when so much of my experiences with relationships are built around fights and being made to feel like somehow it’s all my fault.
failed relationships leave scars. when those relationships fail over the same type of thing, over and over and over, it starts to leave a wound so deep the knife might as well still be buried in your back.
well.
the knife is buried in mine.

hi! i'm new to comics and i got in through reading your fics and wayne family adventures. i've since started reading more of the mainstream verse and i realized that most comic fans consider wfa to be totally fanon. you're one of the few i saw that disagrees. would you mind elaborating a lil on why? i'm too new to really form an opinion either way but i'd like to know your's!
(also yes i really did stalk your blog back years worth of posts i'm sorry! 😭😭)
Aw I love this! Welcome!
So I think it's really important to be clear on definitions here:
Canon means it's part of an official text. It's literally in a comic (or book or movie or other property) published or licensed by DC.
Fanon means it's made up by fans. That doesn't mean bad or good, it just means that it comes from fandom and is not part of the official text.
Wayne Family Adventures is an official licensed comic by DC, so by definition, it cannot be fanon. That doesn't mean everyone has to like it, but it's not a fan comic. It's an official DC product. It's not fanon.
Now, WFA isn't part of the main DCU canon. It takes place in a separate universe. The Jason in Batman #138 and the Jason in WFA are not the same and they are having very different experiences. (And I'm sure the Jason in WFA would be grateful if he knew.)
But that's no different than a comic that takes place in an alternate universe, like Dark Knights of Steel or DCeased, or a movie like Blue Beetle or a show like My Adventures with Superman. They all take place in their own universes, but all of those universes are canon. None of them are fanon.
What I think most people mean when they say WFA is fanon is that WFA draws on tropes and characterizations that are popular in fandom. Which...yes, absolutely. This is on purpose, and honestly, it pisses me off when people complain about it. (Not you, anon! Your question was lovely, you just triggered my unskippable cut scene of dialogue. Sorry lol.)
Wayne Family Adventures is probably the single best idea DC has had in the 20 years I've been reading comics. (The second best was the kids and YA graphic novel lines.)
I just checked, and WFA has 1.3 MILLION subscribers. That's more than every floppy comic starring Batman sells in a month, combined. It's more than literally any superhero comic has sold in decades - in this century! The combined strips have over A HUNDRED MILLION VIEWS. That is bonkerstown. That is a readership like DC hasn't seen since the 1970s. That is unparalleled success, and it's introducing characters like Kate Kane and Duke Thomas to a whole new audience.
Now, WFA was clearly designed to appeal to Batfans who were active on social media and fanfic sites like AO3 and Wattpad, and Webtoon readers. The readership of Webtoon is mostly young and female. Fandom as a whole is mostly female. The writer of WFA is female.
And maybe I'm not being fair here, but when I see people dismiss WFA as "just fanon," I always catch a whiff of "It's not a real Batman comic. It's a girl comic for girls."
I have spent the past 20 years begging DC (and Marvel, DC is not alone in this) to see women as a viable audience - as their largest potential growth audience! I have watched in dumbfounded frustration as they ignored the juggernaut success of Raina Telgemeier and Ngozi Ukazu and Alice Oseman running rings around the NY Times bestseller list and counted a 50k shipment here and there as a resounding triumph. I have literally seen them throw out survey responses from women because "those women had an agenda." (This is a true story. 2011 was rough, y'all.)
And all of a sudden, they gave us a comic actually catering to women and young people and fandom, and they put it on the most popular, current, modern platform for comics availably - and it's brilliant. It's smart and funny and stunningly drawn and every episode makes clever, inventive use of the scrolling format. They FINALLY gave us a girl comic for girls, and it's a masterpiece.
And yes, it riffs on fanon concepts. It also has its roots firmly in mainstream DCU canon. It references deep cuts. CRC Payne and StarBite know their shit. Jason Todd being a bookworm may be a fanon staple, but he does plenty of reading - including Jane Austen - in the 100% canon mainstream DCU comics.
It's not going to be for everything, because nothing is. It's completely fine if you don't like WFA. No one has to read it or enjoy it. If you're into Batman for the darkness and the crime and the ongoing plotlines and the angst, WFA won't be for you, and that's totally fine!
But to finally, finally be valued as a reader by DC, to have them do something smart and innovative and so, so well executed, and have the exact people they made it for dismiss it out of hand because Bruce has a "World's Okayest Dad" mug or whatever? Yeah, that chafes.

If Raina was a superhero, what would her super-name be?
Isn't it a lovely chance that I just got home after an event and after a cocktail made with lavender and I find this question from you waiting for me? LOL
Ok, the first thing that came to mind was
Tumblr media
Look at her. Same picture. Garrett is Groot. *aggressively plays Come and Get Your Love*
Jokes and a franchise that's I stopped enjoying years and years ago...
I am thinking and considering, but I think she could go with "Red Nemesis". Which keeps being something that's not necessarily good...
I could say that in a Watchmen universe she could make a good Rorschach (he'd be her favourite), but I should read the comics again to be sure she fits (oh no what a terrible predicament, alas alas woe is me).
I am joking her name would totally be Rambunctious Raccoon. Which also was a name found by Varric, he called her that as a joke and that name stuck around more than the official one. Cullen is the only one to call her Red Nemesis because he didn't got the note, he'll be the over-zealous cop in charge of catching her, not realising his boss is the real Villain.
Thanks for the question, it was a lovely one! :D
An extra: I was looking for fitting words and I think Radha would be called "Vespertide". I don't know, got the flash, here you go.

Cordy: Alright here we go.
Raina: Oh wow.
Cordy: Well you’re not laughing so that’s a plus.
Raina: [....]
Cordy: Ok but you DO need to say something!
Raina: [laughs] Sorry. Wasn’t supposed to laugh.
Cordy: Gah, ok nevermind maybe I’m not-
Raina: You look beautiful, Cordy. You’ll fit right in... No you’ll outshine everyone.
Raina: What happened to “this’ll be a blast”
Cordy: [nervous laugh] I had the week to imagine worst case scenarios.
Raina: That’s fair. Everything will be fine, I promise. Let’s head out.

When I'm in an "adding unnecessary visual storytelling to a non-visual medium" competition and my opponent is Raina
Tumblr media
Saw somebody ask if the box room is in Arthur's head, which is a good guess but I was thinking more that it's a full-sized room somewhere in a pocket dimension, with window-like gateways to Arthur's eyes, through which the entity can come out as a ghostly version of himself
Man I don't even know what to call this, an AU? Headcanon? I'm gonna call it Prism AU for now, or maybe Other Side AU, here's my original post about it. Originally a brainstorm for Malevolent as an animated series and I got carried away
