Taylor Swift and Martin Johnson
Tumblr media
9 February 2008: In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Taylor mentions that her most recent iTunes download is Hero/Heroine by Bostonian pop-rock band Boys Like Girls. (John Mayer is also up there... ugh.) The lead singer, Martin Johnson, is flattered and reaches out to Taylor.
Late February 2008: Taylor and Martin write You'll Always Find Your Way Back Home for the Hannah Montana movie.
Boys Like Girls opened for Avril Lavigne throughout March and April and weren't free again until May. (On an unrelated note, the openers for the next leg of the tour were the Jonas Brothers.) I think given how Taylor continuously mentioned Boys Like Girls afterwards, they had written this song in February already.
26 March 2008: Taylor mentions that her current ringtone is Hero/Heroine.
Early April 2008: Taylor films Once Upon A Prom. At the beginning of the video, she wears a Boys Like Girls vest in the studio.
Why is she pretending to write Picture To Burn in 2008??? Anyway, I do wonder what the new bridge she had just thought up was...
Early June 2008: Miley Cyrus shoots the part in Hannah Montana: The Movie where she sings You'll Always Find Your Way Back Home.
Summer 2008: Boys Like Girls drummer John Keefe records drums on You're Not Sorry.
Late September 2008: Taylor and Martin write Drama Queen. The song would be mastered along with the rest of Fearless.
11 November 2008: Fearless is released.
April 2009: Taylor and Martin write If This Was A Movie.
27 August 2009: Boys Like Girls attend Taylor's show at Madison Square Garden.
8 September 2009: Two Is Better Than One featuring Taylor Swift is released. It was co-written by Taylor Swift.
A lot of people seem to think If This Was A Movie and Two Is Better Than One were written in the same session, which I think is pretty probable.
It seems that after writing Two Is Better Than One, Boys Like Girls recorded a version of the song themselves, but then decided they wanted some female vocals on the song and so contacted Taylor again.
We finished up the whole song “Two Is Better Than One.” It was all produced and recorded and we wanted to make it a little bit better. We thought she would do a killer job on it and we just hit her up, and she said she’d do it and it was the coolest thing ever.
11 December 2009: Taylor and Boys Like Girls perform Two Is Better Than One together at the Z100 Jingle Ball.
...but is it a love story?
Love Story was written in March 2008. Although there were rumours of Taylor and Martin dating as early as 2008, the first "report" I can find that Taylor and Martin ever dated was in 2012 in an article on his then-date Ashley Tisdale, which was picked up by the Daily Mail shortly after. Martin himself also apparently confirmed that Love Story was about him, according to a few Reddit comments, but he also said that Fearless was about him, which is impossible since it was written in 2007.
Taylor said that Love Story was written about a guy that her parents disapproved of and who turned out to be a "creep". We won't know what she meant by "creep", but there are also some rumours of his inappropriate behaviour with female fans, and on a more serious note, Martin was struggling with addiction problems up till 2010, so both of those might have played a part in her parents' distaste.
In 2018, Martin had this to say about those rumours:
Tumblr media
Is that confirmation? I have no idea.
Conclusion
There are so many John Mayer parallels here that it's honestly a bit worrying.

February - May 2008 | The Introduction of The Johns™️, Joe Bro and Emma Stone/The (Brief) Return of Liz & Julianne
February 5th
Taylor films for the show "Dance War" and recognizes Liz. She mentions something had always "stuck out" about her, and that she wishes her the best.
Tumblr media
February 9th
Taylor does an interview with The Wallstreet Journal.
She is asked to name 5 of her most recent downloads.
She most notably mentions the song "Hero/Heroine" by the band Boys Like Girls, as well as Slow Dancing In A Burning Room by John Mayer.
Taylor's mention of the band inspires them to reach out to her.
Tumblr media
February
Taylor writes "You'll Always Find Your Way Back Home," with the band's lead singer, Martin Johnson, for Hannah Montana The Movie.
Tumblr media
Some context: Rumours of a relationship between Martin and Taylor have existed for years - said rumours were seemingly confirmed in 2016 by Ashley Tisdale. Though, she also states that Taylor told her she had never written any songs about Ashley's ex.
Ashley Tisdale's dating life is far less high profile than Taylor's.
So, her brief relationship with Martin from December 2011 - March 2012 is the only (public) relationship she could have been referencing in the clip.
Tumblr media
Martin has also allegedly made several comments about his and Taylor's relationship.
In November of 2009, a comment was posted to an online message board that claimed that Martin had drunkenly revealed he had taken Taylor's virginity.
Earlier this year, another comment was left on a reddit post that claimed that he had come into this person's workplace, and ranted about how awful she was, and that the two had dated for 6 months.
Of course, there's no way to legitimately confirm whether he actually said these things (or whether they're true) but it's an important note.
He has also mentioned how his relationships during this time were primarily physical, as he and the girls he was dating were so similar that they ran out of things to talk about.
March
Taylor sees Julianne Hough at an event and the two are pictured together.
Tumblr media
Taylor records Love Story about a guy her parents disapprove of.
This guy is believed to be Martin.
However, though the song was recorded in 2008, Taylor (59:15) and her mother (3:30) have both insisted that it was written when Taylor was 17 (2007) before she met Martin.
The actual muse for the song is once again unclear.
Regardless of if Martin inspired the song, if the two were genuinely together at any point in time (which I believe they were) , February - April is, in my opinion, the most likely time for it to have happened; though it is important to note that Boys Like Girls were on the road as openers for Avril Lavigne during this time, so interactions between Martin and Taylor would've been limited. Martin was also living in Brooklyn at the time, while Taylor was living in Nashville.
March 26th
Taylor is interviewed by Billboard and is once again asked about her music taste.
She once again mentions both Boys Like Girls and John Mayer (as well as... Kanye West).
She even goes so far as to state that "Hero/Heroine" is her current ringtone.
April
Taylor films her Once Upon a Prom MTV special, and is seen wearing Boys Like Girls merchandise in the studio (2:30).
April 27th
Taylor meets Emma Stone (the believed inspiration behind When Emma Falls In Love, and depending on who you ask, Enchanted) at The Young Hollywood Awards.
Tumblr media
During the writing process of Speak Now, Emma dated (fell in looooove with) Teddy Geiger (2007-2009) and Kiernan Culkin (2010-2011).
Tumblr media
She and Andrew Garfield did not start going out until 2011, after Taylor had finished writing the album (sorry to break it to you stonefield (???) truthers).
Prior to performing the song, Taylor stated she wrote it about one of her best friends, solidifying that Emma Stone is the inspiration (yes, I'm aware she has friendships with both Emma Roberts and (apparently) Emma Watson, but c'mon).
May 5th
Taylor meets John Mayer at the Met Gala and later gushes about it in a now deleted interview with People Magazine.
Tumblr media
Some more context: In 2010, while presenting Taylor with the Hal David Starlight Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame, John Mayer explained that prior to meeting Taylor, he would consistently ask those within her circle who was "really" writing her songs. Each of them responded with "she is" yet despite this, he did not believe them, nor did he believe Taylor when she gave the same answer upon being asked the question, until she quite literally wrote one in front of him (0:40).
So, putting that into perspective: 30-year-old John Mayer (who did not believe Taylor wrote her own songs) introduced himself to 18-year-old Taylor Swift (who looked up to him as a songwriting hero) over 6 months prior to him reaching out to collaborate.
May 11th
Taylor writes a journal entry about meeting a bunch of celebrities, though she does not mention John.
Tumblr media
Bonus: this clip from an interview done at some point in 2008
youtube
On a lighter note
May
The Jonas Brothers film their Burnin' Up music video, and Joe Jonas' love interest bares a striking resemblance to Taylor.
Tumblr media
Nick's is played by Selena (who he was dating at the time), so the love interests are significant.
So, either Joe and Taylor were like.. kind of a thing, or Joe had a bit of a crush (or maybe their publicists set it up. I don't know these people).

Boys Like Girls - Sunday At Foxwoods
Boys Like Girls is one of the most underrated bands of the mid-00s pop-punk and emo bands; their 2006 self-titled debut album is a hidden gem, despite having a few hits on it, such as “The Great Escape,” “Hero/Heroine,” and “Thunder,” but the whole album is awesome. They dropped their last album in 2012, and kind of disappeared without a proper goodbye, but the band members did their own things. Most notably, frontman Martin Johnson became a songwriter and penned a lot of songs for popular artists, ultimately starting The Night Game, an 80s influenced project that he started because he felt disillusioned with the pop songwriting machine and wanted to go back to writing songs for himself and fall in love with songwriting again. I absolutely love those records, especially his debut, but earlier this year, Boys Like Girls came back.
They released a few singles throughout the year, but I didn’t know if an album would come out of that, until they announced Sunday At Foxwoods, their first album in eleven years. The new singles are fantastic, especially debut single from the album, “Blood & Sugar,” and “Language.” What got me excited for this record is that the band went in the direction that a lot of other bands in this vein are going — 80s new wave and pop-rock. The Maine’s self-titled album from earlier this year has that same sound, albeit in a different way, but they took inspiration from the 80s as well. To be fair, though, Johnson’s The Night Game already did that five years prior, and you can tell that’s where he shines.
Sunday At Foxwoods has a very 80s feel, and in the best way possible, it reminds me of The Night Game, in which a lot of Johnson’s lyricism and his sound is very nostalgic. What I loved about The Night Game’s self-titled debut from 2018 is that it was a record that encompassed nostalgia for things that you may not even have gone through, or that makes you wonder about the “what ifs” about someone that maybe slipped away. Sunday, which I’m gonna call the album from now one, is the same way, but it’s not as synth-heavy and new wave inspired as The Night Game. Because this is a rock album, there is a much more prominent guitar element that runs through the record, but it’s that 80s rock and alternative sound. Songs like the singles I mentioned, “Miracle,” “Physical,” and “New Love,” among a few others, are utterly fantastic and catchy as hell. That’s the key with this record, it’s catchy, and Johnson’s songwriting is in top form.
What I love about this album is that it feels very grown-up, as in that the band has grown up since their debut album, and the lyrics reflect that. They’re nothing super special, mind you, but this record has a lot of good ideas that are about love, loss, nostalgia, and many other things. The album even swerves a bit with songs like the ballad “Cry,” and the acoustic closing track “Lost In Wonderland” that has a very nostalgic feeling. I do love the variety on the album, and the album is only 42 minutes as a whole, but it doesn’t quite feel like it. This album is great, though, and if you love this band, or you love 80s-inspired pop-rock / alt-rock, I think you’ll love this album, too. It’s such a fun, catchy, slick, and energetic listen, and I haven’t been able to stop listening to this album in the week since it came out. This album just may be one of the best albums of the year.

So recently someone brought up the Martin Johnson rumours again. The story goes that she and Martin dated in 2008, and they broke up because Joe Jonas/her parents disapproved/PR purposes. Love Story is also apparently about him.
The main reason why I don't think they were ever a serious item was because of the existence of If This Was A Movie. Imagine writing a song with someone you're dating/you dated and they talk about how they miss their ex so much that they're willing to take back what they said! But apparently, Martin didn't mind that and released Two Is Better Than One later on, and even went on air to defend Taylor after the VMAs (okay that is a very low bar to clear but you get my point). So either Martin really lacked a spine or both sides knew it wasn't anything serious at all.
This brings me to why If This Was A Movie was on Speak Now in the first place. We know she had plenty of self-written songs in the vault (Let's Go you will be missed...), and that she had pretty good control over the music she put out (cf. Red, 1989), so I don't think her label had a hand in that decision, which was strange (especially in hindsight) because Speak Now was her solo-written proving-her-chops album. I think she was subtweeting Martin with that song for whatever reason. If you believe in the Love Story muse rumour, she would call Martin a "creep" in 2011, so there was some enmity there by then.

September - October 2008 | "She's Better Known For The Things That She Does On The Mattress... Unlike Me!" (Please Believe Me Version) (Taylor's Version) - AKA The Introduction of Camilla Belle, and Taylor's "Purity"
September 7th
First of all, something I've neglected to mention in this deep dive is the Jonas' Brothers infamous purity rings.
The Joe Bros pledge to remain pure led to them dealing with a lot of criticism from the media - this came to a head at the 2008 VMAs, where a lot of jokes were targeted at them.
Taylor Swift (who was pictured with them throughout the event) was incredibly offended on their behalf.
Tumblr media
September 8th
Taking a small break from the subject of "purity", guess what video is released the day after the VMAs? You guessed it: The "Lovebug" music video. And who was in that music video? Camilla Belle of course!
Tumblr media
Now, though Joe and Taylor were seemingly pretty serious (cuddling is like 3rd base in Joe Bro land) Joe had already confessed his love for Camilla to the world back in March - so, he and Tay-Tay were pretty much doomed from the moment Camilla was cast.
Taking his confession into account, it is no wonder that he and Camilla IMMEDIATELY hit it off.
Anyways, back to Taylor.
Tumblr media
September 14th
Taylor makes her offense known during multiple interviews done at the Another Cinderella Story premiere and profusely defends the Bros.
Taylor's defensiveness is interesting for two reasons:
Her (I must repeat ALLEGED) loss of virginity to Martin a few months prior
Her plethora of "edgy" pre-fame myspace comments/posts
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And listen, the Martin thing could be a complete fabrication: WE DON'T KNOW. But, the Myspace comments are very much real, and they tell us that Taylor Swift from the ages of 15-16 was far more comfortable talking about sex than she was at 18, regardless of whether or not she was actually having it.
I find it interesting that the time in which Taylor begins pushing the "purity" thing HARD is right around the time Camilla comes into the picture due to the... lyrical content of the song she eventually writes about her.
On the topic of songs:
Late September
Taylor writes Forever & Always right before Joe calls her up to "discuss feelings".
Tumblr media
She then (after months of being seemingly no contact) writes Drama Queen with Martin Johnson - which in case you haven't heard it (which wouldn't surprise me. It was only very recently leaked and keeps getting taken down) is a song where she basically just calls Joe and Camilla bitches *ahem* I mean, "Drama Queens."
- side note: one of the funniest things about doing this deep dive is getting to revel in how petty Taylor was at the time; getting your ex/casual boyfriend to help write a diss track about the dude who just dumped you and his new girlfriend is objectively hilarious.
Circa October 8th
Taylor puts a line through a quote on her Myspace seemingly in reference to Joe; it's official. They're over.
Tumblr media
October
Taylor records Forever & Always last minute and includes it on Fearless; Drama Queen winds up in the vault (where it will most likely never officially return from).
Late October
Tumblr media
Joe and Camilla attend a Halloween party together, and are allegedly seen making out outside Joe's house. (far more scandalous than the sneaky cuddle-seshs, and no hand-hold dates Taylor and Joe partook in).
They then proceeded to drive off.

My new headcanon based merely on vibes is that Taylor and Martin Johnson wrote Drama Queen in the studio while his bandmate John Keefe was playing drums on You're not Sorry (thanks to @backup-baby-backup for telling me the specific song)
