It's really a shame that I've only really seen Valentina shipped with Prince Alonso or (more occasionally) with Elena. Don't get me wrong, those are nice enough ships. But oh my god, I cannot be the only person who sees that the Shining Light of Paraiso™ goes perfectly in every possible ship I can think of.

A tribute to Avalor's sibling pairs Elena and Isabel, Elena and Esteban, Marisa and Marzel, as well as Carla and Mateo.
In the end they help each other take care of their nieces: Elena with Carlotta, Isa with Anita and Carla and Mateo with Victoria and Anita.
Thank you very much to Laura Schiller for the song suggestion and her fanfic: https://archiveofourown.org/works/44208661 Cora and Marisa as a couple with a daughter is invented by @ameliathefatcat.

I like your post about Elena x one of the Sirena siblings. Regardless of whether they live on land or in the sea, do you think Elena x Sirena sibling’s kids will be able to transform legs on land and a tail in the water like Marisa and Marzel? Or will it not work since one of their parents is only half Sirena?
ooh, an interesting question - depends on how the genetics of shapeshifting works! y'know, assuming it's even possible to apply real world science to the genetics of fantasy creatures. bear with me for a second here; I'm about to wallpaper this post with Punnet squares. In particular, I'm going to examine three main possibilities: species co-dominance, species-linked traits, and a recessive shapeshifting gene.
For the sake of the following squares:
H = gene/chromosome designating its holder as human
S = gene/chromosome designating its holder as sirena
A = dominant trait indicating lack of shapeshifting ability
a = recessive trait indicating ability to shapeshift
the human/formerly human partner listed is always on the left of the square, and the sirena partner is always on the top.
Option 1: Species Co-Dominance
Tumblr media
This option presumes that Camila still genetically counts as a human, even after her transformation, and that the reason for Marisa and Marzel's shapeshifting abilities is the result of simultaneously having both human and sirena genes that present with equal dominance. They're technically neither, but something else entirely, and are able to present as both. A real-world example of this is with blood types: A and B blood types are co-dominant (as opposed to the recessive type O), and someone with both alleles has type AB blood, which is neither type A nor B, but has traits of both.
Now obviously there's not like, a single gene that's like "yep! this is a human!" in actual people, so this is drastically simplified, but by this model, any of Camila and Pescoro's children would be able to shapeshift, and there would be about a 50% chance that of one Elena and Marisa or Marzel's kids would be able to shapeshift, as indicated by the "HS" blocks in the squares above. Otherwise, the kids would be completely human.
Option 2.1: Species-Linked Trait, Human Camila
Tumblr media
There are two variations on the species-linked trait option, but the gist of both is as follows: I imagine there could be a species equivalent to how sex-linked traits work in humans. (Crash course for the unfamiliar: basically, since the X and Y chromosomes are different sizes, there are certain genes on the X chromosome that don't have equivalents on the Y chromosome, meaning if one of those traits on the X of someone with XY chromosomes is the recessive allele, it will be the displayed allele, because there can't be a dominant trait to overwrite it. Someone with two X chromosomes would need to have the recessive allele on both for it to display. Color-blindness is a real world example of this.)
This option proposes that shapeshifting could be a sirena-specific trait on whatever their "sirena chromosome" is, and since there's no equivalent gene in humans, if the recessive, "yes shapeshifting" allele is passed on, the human/sirena hybrid will be able to shapeshift. The dominant "no shapeshifting" allele that would otherwise be very common amongst sirenas would prevent most of them from being able to shapeshift themselves, and if sirenas haven't approached the shore since before their war with the humans, it's possible that they don't even know anymore that some of them could shapeshift.
The variations here come from whether or not Camila counts genetically as a human or as a sirena. If she's still considered human but with a sirena coat of paint, then as shown above, there was a 50% chance for either Marisa or Marzel to end up being able to shapeshift (and only a 25% chance that they both can!), and as in the co-dominance case, there'd be a 50% chance of shapeshifting Elena/Sirena Sib kids and 50% chance of them being human. In the other case...
Option 2.2: Species-Linked Trait, Sirena Camila
Tumblr media
If Camila now genetically counts as a sirena, then we know that both she and Pescoro must have at least one dominant "no shapeshifting" allele, assuming they can't shapeshift themselves, and one recessive "yes shapeshifting" allele to pass on for Marisa and Marzel to be able to do it. In this scenario, since both of Marisa and Marzel's relevant chromosomes (or whatever they'd be called) would have the recessive trait, Elena's lack of a shapeshifting gene to counteract it would mean that all of their children would be able to shapeshift.
Option 3: Recessive Shapeshifting Gene
Tumblr media
This option presumes that, this being a fantasy world, shapeshifting is just a perfectly normal trait that any humanoid creature can have, and it's just extremely uncommon amongst humans. The Camila/Pescoro square in this case would look no different from their option 2.2 square, since Marisa and Marzel still need to be able to shapeshift without allowing Camila and Pescoro to do so themselves, so I've left it out here to focus on Elena's genetic possibilities.
Since she can't seem to shapeshift into anything automatically, Elena would have to have either two dominant "no shapeshifting" alleles or one dominant and one masked recessive allele. In the former case, none of the Elena/Marisa|Marzel kids would be able to shapeshift, but could all potentially pass on the trait to do so to their own kids. In the latter case, there'd be a 50% chance that the kids could shapeshift. I have no idea if they'd present as human or sirena - maybe the species of whichever parent carried them? I feel like a kid born in the wrong biome would be. Y'know. An issue.
So In Conclusion:
There's options lol. I personally feel like some kind of co-dominance is most likely, since that's most in-line with what's presented in the text. That is: shapeshifting between human and sirena is something unique to Marisa and Marzel as a direct result of their mixed heritage. This would make the shapeshifting ability of their children a bit of a toss-up. That said, this does beg the question of why Camila, who has supposedly been thoroughly transformed into a sirena, still genetically counts as a human, which options 2.2 and 3 can get around asking.
Now, the one I *like* the most is option 2.2 - it avoids the messy "so what's up with Camila" question as well as the "why don't we see any shapeshifting humans" question, and the lack of other sirena shapeshifters can be hand-waved away by the aforementioned "well they just haven't tried because of tensions with the humans" thing. I think "suddenly, other shapeshifting sirenas have shown up and balancing the two cultures is more important than ever" could make for a really interesting story, and 2.2 is also the only option that guarantees that the second gen sirena kids can shapeshift.
...Although now that I'm thinking about it, the conflict of "I'm the child of a human queen and a sirena noble and my sibling can shapeshift but I can't, how is that fair?" could also make for a really good story. So it's - there's options! Elena and a Sirena sibling's kids being able to shapeshift or not could be justified one way or the other, and any interpretation could lend itself to a fun story.

Hair Ruffle Marissa and Marzel?
Up until this ask Mariza and Marzel had crossed my mind literally zero times
"Get back here!" Marisa roared, chasing after Marzel. She reached for him, but he was faster and before she caught up he had already jumped into the water.
"I'll get you!" She yelled after him, banging her fist on the railing of the ship.
"Umm... What happened?" Marisa turned around to see a very confused Valentina behind herself. "I was looking for you to ask if you want to join us for a game of zestaball, but I see you're busy?"
"Not really, Marzel got another point," Marisa groaned flopping onto the deck. Seeing Valentina's confused stare she explained, "We have a prank war going on and he just made me drop a whole plate of kelp tacos on Alonso. Speaking of that, I should probably go apologize to him..."
She started to get up but was immediately stopped by a cunning grin blooming on Valentina's face.
"Alonso can wait," she said putting an arm around Marisa. "But now we should plan your revenge."
***
Marzel was sitting safely in an armchair below deck, with his feet kicked onto the table. Now that he had one upped Marisa in pranks, and after an exhausting tenis match with Rebecca, there was nothing he wanted to do more than take a quick siesta. But alas he wasn't given that.
"Watch out!" He heard right before Marisa jumped into the back of his armchair and ruffled his hair.
He immediately bolted up and tried to catch her hand, but she was already running to the door leading to the deck. He shouted at her and launched into pursuit after her.
He caught up with her only on the bow, but still before she could escape him into the sea.
"Oh no, you got me!" Marisa exclaimed far too calmly. Something was off.
"Yeah," Marzel looked carefully around, but not seeing any buckets of paint or puffish launched at him, he continued. "And now you'll get a taste of your own medicine."
He reached for Marisa's hair to ruffle it even more than she had his before he could do that, he noticed a seagull, flying right into him.
He yelped and jumped back. Only then he realized, it wasn't only one seagull. Soon he was swarmed by tens, if not hundreds of birds all diving at his head, and he had to jump like a jellyfish in a whirlpool to avoid getting pecked.
"Marisa!" He yelled over the squawking. "What did you put in my hair!?"
And Marisa instead of answering, high fived Valentina and sat back to watch the show.
Phew, that was difficult! Still, I hope you enjoyed it and thank you for the ask!

I know you already voiced your opinion on Carzel (Carla x Marzel), but what’s your opinion on Elena x Marzel?
Elena x Marzel seems cute. They're both stubborn, they both love their families, and they both are learning how to be good rulers and doing a pretty good job so far. All the scenes with them interacting are always pretty fun, so they seem compatible. They both had their biases about each other at first, but they became good friends pretty quickly. Elena taught Marzel a lot about land stuff (and those scenes were always hilarious). Plus, he gets along with Francisco, which is an added bonus.
Politically, it probably would be beneficial? It would likely strengthen human Serena relations. Although geographically I don't think they'd be able to merge Avalor and Coronado, so they'd have to figure out which of their possible heirs would inherit each Kingdom, but that probably wouldn't be too much of an issue. I definitely don't think either one would have to move to a new location permanently. (Elena is so magical now I feel like spontaneously getting water breathing powers would be expected at this point.)

Marisa start calling Choe ‘Chloseph’ as joke and that nickname just stuck. So all of the other royal friends all her that now.
Even as full grown adults with families they still call Chloe ‘Chloseph’. Some of the children were confused why Chloe as called Chloseph and believed it to be her actual full name. The children did call her ‘Auntie Chloseph’ until Chloe shut that down

I was just thinking, Elena has been shipped with so many people. Mateo, Gabe, Naomi, Alonso, Valentina, Marisa, you get the picture.
But her and Marzel? Absolutely nada. Which I kinda find funny but I also admire because they do give me platonic friends vibes. And the more I think about it they have quite a few things in common so they’d make great friends.
Both were learning how to become good rulers, felt insecurities and setbacks but powered through with some help firm their friends. Both had a black and white morality in the beginning, Marzel with trusting humans, Elena with Esteban. Both enjoy athletic sports.
Both are perhaps a bit too protective when it comes to their siblings because Marisa and Isabel know how to handle themselves.
They have the somewhat same outlook in life that they’d get along without any sparks. I just think they’re neat. Here’s some gifs!

Meet My MC: Xiomara Isabel Calloway
Tumblr media
I summarized the main details above but I'll also write them here just in case
FC: Adria Arjona
Book: Wake The Dead (feat. My Carmen Sandiego 2019 AU)
Nickname(s): Xi, Mara, Genius
Age: 25
Birthday: September 21
Birth Town (Only in WTD Universe): Reno, Nevada
Race/Ethnicity: Half Argentinian & Half Australian
Love Interest: Troy Hassan
Trivia: has a photographic memory, is an avid sketcher and is an inventor with advanced combat/weaponry skills
Personality: logical – organized – detail oriented – helpful – kind – calm – supportive – intellectual – resourceful – hardworking – reliable – punctual – patient – critical thinker – responsible – humble – people pleaser – perfectionist – self-destructive – high standards – stubborn – anxious – kinda sarcastic
Backstory: Xiomara's (and her older sister Scarlett's) biological parents were Carmen Sandiego and Graham Calloway. They got married in their early twenties after meeting at college (along with their other three close friends Sheena Turner, Antonio Cruz, and Jean-Paul). After finishing school, Sheena ran off without saying goodbye, and the rest of the four got married and had a double wedding! Antonio and Jean-Paul adopted two kids (Marisa and Marzel) and became a large family, especially the latter family insisting that they were to be called uncles or cousins. They were happy until the drones started spreading. Carmen, Gray, Marisa, and Marzel died saving their family/community or in the process of escaping, and requested that Antonio and Jean-Paul raised Scarlett and Xiomara. They happily obliged as they were the only family they had left, and moved to Reno focusing more on combat training. The rest of the story stayed the same: Jean-Paul getting bit, and Antonio refusing to kill him which didn't end well... 10-year-old Scarlett took 4-year-old Xiomara and ended up in The Tower, etc.

If I had a nickel for every time a merman marries a human, has a happy family with kids, and doesn't die, all while staying as a merman, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Hi! I love your fanfic contribution for Ship Appreciation week! Even though I don’t really ship Elena with either of the Sirena siblings, I’ve often wondered how a relationship with Marisa or Marzel would work for Elena. Despite their tails turning into legs when they’re out of the water, would they be able to live on land? Or would Elena have to turn into a Sirena permanently to be with Marisa or Marzel (and presumably abdicate the throne in the process).
ah, thank you so much!! it makes me really happy to know people are enjoying my work 😊
for the rest of the ask, this is where I'd normally present a range of options and then describe which one I personally feel is the most likely based off the text (or my own vibes), but oh boy this one really is just a total speculative toss-up:
Like, I think the longest we see Marisa or Marzel out of the water is when Marzel is hanging out with the other kings in Two Left Fins -- even if we assume he stays out of the water from the end of his song until the moment he and the kings go swimming the next day, that's at most like 36 hours, and that's being incredibly generous. There's just no way to gauge the kind of long-term effects staying out of the water could have on the sirena sibs.
on the flip side with Elena becoming a sirena, I'm... not totally convinced that the transformation is as permanent as the show makes it out to be. Like there are plenty of other examples in the show of so-called "permanent" or "unbreakable" magical effects that... get broken? Pretty quickly, no less? Like, Fiero getting petrified was supposed to be permanent, no one apparently knew how to do undo the El Guapo curse, and for all the "you can't undo what's been done but you can change what you do next" stuff in Coronation Day, Elena, uh, sure undid a bunch of stuff that sure had been done that episode once her forgiveness magic kicked in.
And especially because transformation/shapechanging is one of the more common forms of magic in the show! The noblins can do it, the sunbirds can do it, at least two sirenas can do it, the malandros can do it, one out of four Shades can do it, wizards can do it, that one freaky grotto in Vallestrella can do it -- like there's gotta be some understanding of how it works, right?
And even further, if Camila is truly, permanently, and fully sirena as a result of her transformation... then why do her kids count as half human in the first place? Has-- has anyone tried to undo her transformation, or did they just assume it was permanent? Has she tried to go on land since she got fins? How much of a precedent is there, really, for humans getting tangled up in the milagra and turning into sirenas? They seem to know about how the Red Avari blossom works in reversing the transformation before the whole tail glowing thing stops and apparently makes it permanent for real, and Pescoro seems awfully confident in his "it's just not possible" remark, but like... Cahu was pretty confident her powers were permanent, too, and we all know how that turned out.
As far as I'm concerned, magic in this show is only as permanent as a given writer wants it to be. (And that's not necessarily a criticism! A magic system with a consistent rule of "any magic can be undone with a counterspell of equivalent complexity and strength" still works, and doesn't rule out "permanence" for drama's sake if the requisite counter is nigh impossible to do. It's being consistent that's important -- if you repeatedly tell me an effect is permanent, and then repeatedly undo it anyway, then I'm gonna stop believing true permanency is actually a possibility.) ((And yes, I'm including fanfic and headcanon writers in that category of ‘a given writer’. Run wild.))
I, uh. In case it's not obvious, I care a lot about the mechanics of magic systems.
Anyway, I had a point--
And that point is basically just a massive shrug emoji lol. We don't really know what would happen if Marisa or Marzel stayed on land long term, nor can we, in my opinion, say we truly know what happens once a human becomes a sirena. And honestly, I think there's enough interesting possibilities with both options of "M-sib of choice moves on land" and "Elena moves to the sea" that I don't really have a preferred headcanon for how that would work. I think both of those stories could be interesting in the right hands. Or rather, all four of those stories.
One last option that hasn't been mentioned thus far -- Elena and Mar(isa/zel) become a long-term couple but still live in their respective kingdoms. I remember reading a fic on here once (although I cannot for the life of me remember the title or author, so if you recognize the story I'm talking about, let me know so I can credit it properly?) where Elena and Marzel were married and like. Marzel still lived in the ocean? I think Elena had moved the main seat of Avaloran political power to Nueva Vista so she could be closer to him, but she was definitely still living on land, and she would walk down to the pier to meet up with him. So like, that's an option, too. It would definitely bring its own relationship challenges to the table, but it is, technically, on the table.
