Honorary witches

This time on our little honorary witches trip we’ll be looking at the Ba’al from Bravely Second! I just adore their designs and they have a boppin’ battle theme to add to it!

They all have links to the story of some characters (which I obviously don’t really get cause I know nothing about the game...) which makes them even cooler. My favourites are Snowcap, Turtle Dove and Goldie.

My sister actually did witch bios for each of them, I’ll leave them under the cut cause altogether they’re quite long!

Diederich, the Snowcap Witch, with a hateful nature. Rumours speak of Diederich’s barrier once being a luscious mountain range full of life, but something went wrong. Now it rages in an eternal blizzard dotted with the husks of machinery. Anyone foolish enough to enter this witch’s barrier will be blinded and deafened by the howling wind of Diederich’s rage, masking the grating of her tracks. The snowflakes of the barrier are the frigid remnants of the souls the witch has consumed.

Cara, the Goldfish witch, with a hungry nature. The witch’s barrier is a beautiful glittering festival, but not is all as it seems. Each stall acts as offerings to the witch, who floats down through the festival at midnight every day. No matter how much food the witch consumes, they cannot satiate their appetite, even stooping to consume their own familiars in their frustration, turning their bodies into gemstones that make up Cara’s scaly body.

Pierette, the Turtle Dove witch, with a vain nature. The witch’s barrier stands like a black silhouette, even those that enter finding their appearance altered like a paper cutout. The witch resides atop the tallest hill overlooking their realm, their church home swathed in jewels and veils alongside the witch themselves. They stripped the land of it’s beauty so only they would be beautiful, bringing it to a mere shadow of itself in their endeavour to be beautiful.

Malina, the Urchin witch, with an absent nature. This witch’s barrier is eternally rainy, standing as the downtown to a city permanently on the horizon. Malina scuttles through the impossible alleyways, continuing with some unknown task and rather placid for a witch. Their familiars appear as the shadows of rats on the walls, acting as this witch’s eyes and ears as they traverse their urban barrier.

Patsy, the Firstborn witch, with an unsatisfied nature. Their barrier resembles a child’s playroom, but the witch is no child. They continue to paint the walls the barrier is made from over and over, permanently dissatisfied with their work. No one knows who the paintings are for, but Familiars line the barrier with art supplies, attempting to satisfy the witch’s hunger for the right medium for their work.

Berthold the Diamante witch, with a wayfaring nature. Their barrier stands as a huge grassy plain which appears to be empty, only looking skywards shows its true nature. On reflecting oneself into the stars, you can come face to face with the Diamante witch, eternally mapping pathways across their barrier’s galaxies. It is unknown if the skeleton or the unicorn is the true witch, but some say that they are human and celestial combined into one.

Anselma, the Apparati witch, with a progressive nature. This witch lives in a dimmed, abandoned laboratory, doggedly continuing their research. They only need light where they choose to work, so any disturbance is met with a rage, their concentration broken. So engrossed in their work, they take any interruption as the greatest sin, flying into a blind rage that greatly contrasts the eery silence while they work.

Mary, the Redshirt witch, with a charitable nature. A truly odd witch, their barrier is a city illuminated with lights of all colours, but no inhabitants. Their familiars hang as garlands through the empty streets the witch roams. Anyone who is found by the witch is given two boxes, one containing a good gift, and the other not so good. Though having many opportunities to harm, this witch is satiated by the reaction their gift receives. Afterwards the witch continues to roam the streets, decorating to match their mood.

“No, Bavaria’s not doing anything. More than usual, anyways. I’ve just...been thinking about you. I think about you a lot. I want to see you safe and happy. But you don’t seem one for sappy emotional confessions, so I have to say it in some other way.”

Omg what if Vincent arranges a marriage between Diederich and his sister (reader) and at first they don't like each other but they fall in love eventually and you can take it from here...

Haha this was so cute omg!!!

You know your brother loves you. Given that your parents are gone now and he’s already married, it makes sense that he wants someone to take good care of you. After all, it’s not like he can take care of you forever when he’s got a wife and children to take care of. He just wants to make sure you’ll be okay as soon as possible.

That said… Vincent could not have picked a more irritating husband-to-be for you.

Diedrich is wholly and completely not someone you would have picked for yourself. For one thing, you don’t even think Vincent gave you his last name, so you can’t even imagine yourself as Mrs. (Y/N) Somebody. For another thing, this man manages to get on every single last one of your nerves. He’s always eating, which means he frequently talks with his mouth full, which you can’t stand. He acts like he’s high and mighty, better than to give anybody the time of day. Even when the two of you are supposed to be on dates, the whole thing ends up making you feel like you’re a bother to him. He is rude to servers at restaurants, doesn’t like taking walks because he’s got hayfever, he speaks about you in German right in front of you as if you can’t tell regardless of the language, and overall just doesn’t seem to have a romantic bone in his body. It’s been several months already; there isn’t any spark between you two. You know there isn’t a huge spark between a lot of couples, but even so… you just can’t really see spending the rest of your life with Diedrich.

Quite frankly, you think you could do much better, and are almost insulted that this is the man Vincent chose for you to marry.

When Diedrich arrives at the manor today, he’s red-faced and out of breath with watery eyes. As the maid greets him and takes his coat, you pause in your current task – trying to figure out which table this pretty vase should go on – to raise an eyebrow at your fiancé. “My, how am I ever going to resist you, Diedrich?” you mutter before returning to your activity. “You’re a mess.”

“Don’t start with me!” In half a second he’s pulled out his handkerchief and ducked to the side, letting out a couple of loud (and utterly obnoxious) sneezes. “Mein Gott… here. Frohes Jubiläum. I’m going to go wash off my face.” His other hand thrusts something out toward you before he sneezes again and makes his way to one of the washrooms as quickly as he can.

You look after him for a moment, too stunned to even say God bless you. Then you glance down, and are surprised that what he shoved into your hands is a bouquet of flowers. What on Earth…? He hates flowers. And what did he say in German just now? You may be able to tell when he’s talking aboutyou in German, but you haven’t actually learned much German yourself besides greetings. Either way, these are clearly meant as a gift for you.

It strikes you as a bit odd. Although Diedrich has taken you out to places and paid for, say, dinner for you before, he’s never actually given you a gift… unless a rushed little peck on the cheek counts as a gift. What’s going on–?

By the time Diedrich comes back, breathing easier and visibly more relaxed, you’ve placed the flowers in the vase you were faffing with when he came in. Now you’re arranging the flowers, making sure they’re all prominently displayed and happily admiring them. Whatever this is about, you have to admit, he picked out a bunch of beautiful ones. “Ah, so… you like them?”

“Mhm. They’re lovely.” You drop your hands and turn to face him, tilting your head. That’s strange, too. For once he actually looks kind of… pleasant. If you didn’t know better, you’d think that was a half smile on his face. “What were they for, again?”

“Oh… I said that in German, didn’t I? Ach der lieber.” A shrug is the response you get before he heads into the sitting room. “Happy anniversary, (Y/N). It’s been six months since we got engaged, so I figured… maybe it was time to get serious about this.” He plops down in a chair, and almost as if on cue, reaches for one of the trays of food the maid set up earlier. “You know, I’m shocked the engagement’s lasted this long.” Within a few seconds, his mouth is full, and he’s still talking. “With the way Vincent talks about you, it’s madness that he’d want anyone marrying you. Especially me.”

The way he speaks is so candid, like it’s certainly the truth, and yet, he’s awfully casual about it. You move to sit close in a nearby chair, watching him for a few seconds. All his typical mannerisms – his voracious appetite, talking without swallowing, brusque and almost indifferent demeanor – seem a lot less bothersome to you suddenly. “What do you mean?”

“Mmm…? Well… it’s just a bit loony to think that Vincent would set his precious baby sister up to marry a man like me. You know how I am.” For some baffling reason, the way his speech is muffled by food is even sort of endearing. That feeling comes out of nowhere to hit you; even as he keeps eating. “I mean, come now, let’s face it. I’m not exactly Prince Charming, am I?”

Well… he said it, not you. “I’ll admit you’ve never been what I expected. – Ah, for God’s sake, Diedrich.” You lean over and pluck what he’s currently eating from his fingers. “Would you at least wait until Mary brings the tea in before you start stuffing your face like that? You’re going to choke. And why did you get me flowers?”

He quirks an eyebrow at you, as if you’ve started speaking another language. “I told you why. Today is our six-month anniversary. Are you really that surprised that I remembered? Gott, wait until I remember your birthday, then.”

“That isn’t what I mean,” you chuckle. It’s amazing, but you actually feel sort of… okay with him for once. You can’t recall the last time he made you smile, if he has at all. “You’ve got hayfever, and you decided to get me flowers. Why not just get me chocolates or something like that? Why flowers? Why give me something that you know will make you miserable?”

“Ah… pff.” That wave of his hand seems like a dismissive gesture, but if you didn’t know any better, you’d swear his face flushes the slightest rosy color. “They’ll be dead in a few days. The trip over was the worst of it. Besides, I… wanted to make you happy. And I know you love flowers. Since I’m always a pain about going on walks, this is probably the next best thing, ja? I just… figured… maybe I should start taking our potential marriage and relationship a bit more seriously.”

That catches you off guard quite a bit. He’s trying to take your relationship more seriously…? Diedrich? The guy who doesn’t even really care that much about you? “You… you don’t have to do that. Lots of men don’t change… just because the wedding date’s getting closer…”

“Heh… lustiges Mädchen.” Diedrich reaches over and grabs his food back from you, looking pleased when you’re a little too out of it to stop him. Instead of eating, though, he just stares down at the miniature sandwich that’s back in his hands. “It’s not because of that. Can I tell you something?”

“I… suppose.” Out of nowhere, it feels like your heart’s started to race. What in the world is going on here? You’ve never felt anything romantic toward Diedrich before, so why now do you feel as if you’re experiencing your first kiss…?

His eyes fall half-lidded, denying any urge to look up from his food. It looks like he’s deep in thought and doesn’t want to look at you for some reason. “When we first met… and I saw you… I just thought… ‘She’s out of my league.’ I didn’t like you, you got on my nerves, but you were… something else. It didn’t make sense to me why Vincent would want me to marry someone like you. You’re beautiful, and the way your face lights up when you’re enjoying the simple things, even though you could be spending your time doing something much more high-class… I don’t know. I’d never met anyone like you, and I still haven’t. It’s just… crazy to me that you haven’t flat-out refused to be with me anymore at any point. Even though it’s – I know I’m not your first choice, it… never fails to astound me that you’re still… trying.” At last he shoves his food into his mouth, and for once, he actually chews and swallows before speaking again. “It’s a mystery why you haven’t simply given up on me yet.”

This whole speech is news to you. You’d probably have to sit down if you weren’t already sitting, because it’s all such a shock. He actually likes you? This whole time he’s been concerned about not being good enough for you? That… might actually explain why he’s always acted so distant. You know the feeling of thinking you’re not good enough for someone, and when you have that feeling, a person’s natural reaction is to not even try. It looks almost like Diedrich’s been sabotaging himself ever since the two of you met. Even by the time he realized he had feelings for you, he was constantly talking himself out of just going for it.

A warm, fluttering sensation blooms through your stomach, and you get to your feet. It only takes a moment for you to decide that you want to do what you’re planning, and you slowly lower yourself down into Diedrich’s lap. “So… all this time… you just had no idea how to act. You actually had feelings for me, and you didn’t know how to deal with it, so you never did.”

“Was–” If his face wasn’t flushed before, it certainly is now. He’s turned completely red, and looks like he’s attempting to push himself backward. The only problem with that is that he’s currently sitting in a chair with nowhere to go. He looks down quickly, and his face gets even darker. “… Ja, I guess. I was hoping it would calm down, but… I still like you. It’s hard to talk about it, because I just… I knew you didn’t like me back. And how could you? You deserve someone much better. But if us getting married is really going to happen… I should… make more of an effort.”

You can feel your lips turning down as you think about all of this. Perhaps, even after countless dates and spent time together, the two of you have never given each other a fair chance. You’ve been busy looking at all his flaws, and he’s been busy being puzzled by you. It seems like, deep down, he really isn’t such a bad guy. Maybe he just has trouble opening up and getting in touch with what he really feels. As for you… you won’t pretend you can’t see what he means about you being ‘something else’. But, it seems like he might be starting to actually see what you’re like instead of seeing you as some unattainable enigma.

“… You know, Diedrich, you’re a good bit more complicated than you want people to believe.” You lean forward, and press a gentle kiss to his cheek. One hand drapes down so that your fingers can curl around his. “Happy anniversary, love. Now, listen, if I’m going to be your wife, then I mean it. Don’t eat like you were a moment ago unless you’ve got something to drink. And no more flowers in the house. Understood on both counts, darling?”

He’s blushing all the way down to his neck now, and gives a slow nod regardless. There’s even an embarrassed, amused smile playing on his lips. “Ja, liebe…” Although he moves his hand to rest on your hip, he seems to think better of it at the last second. Instead his arm reaches up to lay across your shoulder. “Would you… like to take a walk tomorrow afternoon? We could do it after tea, so I’ll be less… distracted.”

“Okay, sounds like fun.” The tip of your finger taps his nose before you reach over to grab another of the small sandwiches. “You like these? I’ll make them again tomorrow.”

“Warte ab… you made those? I thought Mary made them.” The look in his eyes is suddenly less serious, yet no less delighted. “Wow… (Y/N)…” Out of the blue his face breaks into a wide smile, something you’ve never seen on him before, and he takes your hand. Not a second later, his lips are pressed to the backs of your fingers.

“Sei meine Braut!”

List of the Week: Enemies-to-Lovers Romance in Fantasy & Sci-Fi

A few weeks ago I was contacted on Tumblr with an unusually specific request: a list of fantasy and sci-fi YA novels published in 2016 which employ the enemies-to-lovers trope. Since I love a research challenge, I did my best to oblige. Without further ado, here’s a selection of enemies-to-lovers sci-fi and fantasy books which hit the shelves in 2016!

And for those of us who aren't so interested in romance, here’s a few enemies-to-friends sci-fi/fantasy books that released in 2016!

J’ai reçu de la part de Julie et Stéphanie, qui s’occupe de la promotion des ouvrages des éditions Le temps apprivoisé, un vrai petit bijou réalisé à 6 mains et plus encore, si j’en crois les magnifiques photos. Déjà, n’étant pas prévenue, j’ai regardé le paquet avec surprise : qu’est-ce donc que ce gros livre ? Et puis j’ai découvert la couverture et j’ai sauté de joie, tellement elle est superbe ! Je ne suis pas du genre à acheter ce genre d’almanach. Parce que j’ai toujours peur de regretter je trouve le contenu assez bateau. Mais il y a deux ans j’ai pris ” Mon année anti-stress” de Diederichs qui n’est pas daté. Il est plutôt sympa dans son genre. Celui-ci est bien daté jour après jour. Mais je suis certaine de le garder pour les années suivantes, tant ce que j’ai vu à l’intérieur est croustillant, stimulant, revigorant ! Des idées nutrition et santé, des recettes gourmandes, des DIY faciles, des petits travaux couture ou broderie … Il y en a pour tous et toutes et même pour les enfants.

Chaque premier du mois, tu as un encadré mensuel te permettant de mettre le grand événement de chaque jour. A la fin de l’ouvrage, tu as aussi un calendex pour les anniversaires.

Des index te permettent de naviguer librement dans l’ouvrage.

Des petits textes à lire, des recettes, côtoient des tests et des DIY faciles. On te propose également des lectures, des musiques à écouter, des livres à découvrir mais aussi des lieux à visiter. Les dates des grands événements créatifs sont précisées.

Je ne connais pas Marie-Anne et Amélie, mais je commence à bien connaître l’univers de Julie Goudot. Avec ce livre, j’ai l’impression d’entrer dans sa maison et de discuter avec elle à chaque page que je découvre. November Signing Day is here, send us your pictures and see you at our SGVN office in Monrovia for today’s portrait

It’s that time of year again, Signing Day is Wednesday, Nov. 8, for all sports OTHER than football and boys and girls soccer. That means it’s a big day for those in boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, girls volleyball, cross country and other sports. For all those signing national letters of intent and involved in sign ceremonies at schools, we want to know about it to include you in our plans for signing day coverage. For ALL teams in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Pasadena Star-News and Whittier Daily News coverage area that are signing national letters of intent, you’re invited to our main office in Monrovia at 605 Huntington Drive in Monrovia next Wednesday at 3 p.m., sharp for a group picture and video celebration. Here is what we did last year. Since there are so many sign ceremonies in our three coverage areas, please email pictures to me directly so we can include them in our photo gallery. Send to [email protected]. Also, if you plan on attending or even if you can’t, email me so I can share your big day.
