Maple pecan twists
Makes 15 twists
Ingredients
Filling
1⅓ cups finely chopped pecans
¼ cup maple syrup
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Dough
2¾ cups plus 2 to 3 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup (1 stick) butter, cut into pieces
1 cup regular, light, or nonfat sour cream
¼ cup milk
1 egg
1 tablespoon butter, melted
Glaze
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon maple syrup
3 to 4 teaspoons milk
Directions
Grease two baking sheets. Preheat the oven to 400° F.
To make the filling, in a small bowl, combine the pecans, maple syrup, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.
To make the dough, in a large bowl, combine the 2¾ cups flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the butter pieces until the mixture is crumbly.
In a medium-size bowl, combine the sour cream, milk, and egg. Beat with a wire whisk until smooth.
Stir into the flour mixture just until a dough forms. Sprinkle your work surface with the remaining 2 to 3 tablespoons flour.
Turn the dough out onto the floured surface and knead 12 to 15 times. Roll the dough into a 15x12-inch rectangle.
Brush with the melted butter. Sprinkle the filling over half the dough along the long edge.
Fold the dough over the filling. Cut into 15 one-inch strips.
Twist the strips about 3 times and place them on the baking sheets, pressing the ends onto the sheets.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and transfer to wire racks to cool.
To make the glaze, in a small bowl, combine the confectioners' sugar, maple syrup, and milk. Drizzle over the cooled twists.

LATE WINTER BUTTER ROLLS
My first post I ever made. I was pretty new to the tumblr community at the time. I loved kitchen witchcraft, and I'm the type of person who will ramble on about how much I love cooking and baking. This blog gave me an outlet to express my love of cooking, baking, paganism, and witcraft. And these rolls are very tasty, I make them to this day!
WITCHY TOMATO BASIL SOUP
Tasty, simple, and a crowd-pleaser. It's perfect for a beginner kitchen witch! It was also the second recipe I ever posted.
SWEET CREAM BUNS
It was a recipe given to me by one of my good friends at the time. Every time I make it, it gets devoured in less than 10 minutes. It was also my first recipe to get over 50 notes. I was shocked but ecstatic that so many people would even give it the time of day lol.

The Arcana Recipes: Asra's French Toast
Remember months and months ago when a friend sent me the link to the official recipe for Selasi's pumpkin bread and I made it? It turns out that there's two more recipes that were posted to official socials in 2020!
So here's Asra's pumpkin brioche french toast, and how it went when I made it (pictures and details under the cut)
The trickiest part of this was how few measurements are provided. Beyond the ratio of one egg to one tablespoon of brown sugar, everything else is to taste. Here's the mixture before and after adding the milk:

The recipe didn't specify what kind of bread to use, beyond the title in the original post calling it brioche and the short glimpse in the video before it's submerged. I ended up going with the homemade whole wheat bread that I bake every week, but I'm pretty sure any sliced bread will work just fine!

My pieces did fall apart a little bit, if only because my slices were so absorbent. Like any french toast it's better to go with a lower heat and some patience to make sure it's cooked the whole way through. In this case, there was the added effect of partially caramelizing the brown sugar in the mixture which was so good.

The finished product is supposed to be served with maple syrup and pecans, but I didn't have any pecans so we just had it with syrup. We were all really impressed with how it turned out. It doesn't taste hugely different from normal french toast, but the added depth and twists of flavor just take it to a whole new level. 10/10 this is my default recipe for french toast now and I'm going to be thinking about this for weeks (I mean I knew Asra could cook but I didn't know he was a culinary genius what the heck)-

Chapter Two

It feels cliched, like something from a film about a character working in some business firm, but I’m getting coffee for everyone at Mezzotint, the print studio where I am doing my internship. The studio, located above a little craft shop, opens right out onto a quaint street in Stoneybatter. 
It’s up and coming around here, that’s what they call it when they don’t want to admit to its gentrification, and the café that the staff frequents is one of those hipster places where there isn’t any room to sit. The exotic hanging plants in the window form a lush curtain where you can peer inside and see the moustachioed barista at work underneath a wall of interesting looking coffee paraphernalia.
This café is so close to the Luas line that you can hear the ding ding and swish of the tram as it passes every two minutes or so; Tallaght to The Point, Saggart to Connolly Station, over and over and over again. Each day is accompanied by the music of the city. It seeps in through the windows of this café and of our little studio across the road from it in a way that makes me feel like this little street in North Dublin, and I by extension, are woven inextricably into the fabric of the city.

Everyone likes to pretend that September is the autumn, and even though the leaves are a little bit rusty and the waters a little choppier, the temperature is still warm enough to walk around without a coat in the afternoons. This is something seasonless that can’t decide what it wants to be yet, caught between one moment and the next. A warm breeze licks across my arms as I cross over to Mezzotint with five complicated coffee orders and a paper bag of pastries, pausing to let a woman with flowers in the basket of her bicycle pass me by.

I pass through the shop first, where Petra is placing a new batch of little ceramic bud vases on a shelf, and I give her her mocha and pan au chocolat. “I like those.” I tell her, and she nods, subtly rearranging the vases and confesses that she’s already bought one. She spends way too much of the money she earns from working at this shop buying things in it, but I get it. I’d be buying stuff too if they were paying me. I head up the stairs to the studio above.

“Aw, thanks chicken.” Izzy, one of the printmakers, takes a coffee out of the holder marked with the letters FWAL on the top. I have learned it stands for Flat White, Almond Milk. It’s only half nine in the morning, and she’s already stuck into her work, the tips of her fingers blackened like burned matches from the ink. She doesn’t eat anything in the mornings because it makes her feel sick, but she’ll have her slightly softened croissant at eleven, I leave it in the bag for her.

I bring a vanilla soy latte and a maple pecan twist to Gabriel who peers up at me impishly over his small, round glasses. “You look very nice today.” He says, and I grin. “So do you, but you look nice every day.” 
“Stop.” He grins coquettishly and lifts the lid off his coffee to sniff it. “This is soy, isn’t it?” 
“Yeah of course.”
“Good.” He takes a cautionary sip. “Because I’ll know all about it in about fifteen minutes if it isn’t. You’ll all know about it too.” 
“Yeah we definitely will too.” Izzy groans. “Remember that time they gave you whole cows milk?”
“I will never forget.” He says solemnly. 
“Yeah, no, me neither.”

I go over to the back of the studio to give Simon his flat white with oat milk. He told me he was vegan within an hour of meeting me, and I told him I’d actually never met a real vegan before, so it was an honour. It was supposed to be funny but if he thought it was he didn’t show it. 
He’s sitting hunched over an angled desk with a blade, digging grooves into a block of wood. This is what he does, this old style wood block printing, but it’s always got a contemporary twist to it. Like today, he’s working on a scene in a dark lake, ripples swell behind a woman with long black hair who’s naked, submerged up to her waist and looking up at the full moon.

“Do you like it?” He asks me as I leave his coffee on the table next to him.
 “Yeah it’s really cool.”
He leans back to look, and quickly blows some of the loose curls of shaven wood out of the carved areas. “I like it as well, I think. It has something.”
“Who is it?”
“My girlfriend. It’s always my girlfriend. She’s my muse.”

He’s a very particular type of artsy-intense like that, like he doesn’t think it’s weird to call someone your ‘muse’ in a non-ironic way. “Oh right.” I say. I start turning away to head towards a pile of paper and tools in Gabriel’s corner of the studio, the same ones I’ve been trying to organise all week, but he calls me back over to him. “Yeah, Simon?”
“I’m thinking we should get a start on Christmas cards for the shop.”
“But it’s September.”
“Yes but it takes ages to get everything sorted and printed. It’s best we start designing in the autumn.”
“Oh, alright.”
“So…” He sits up and twirls the blade around his fingers in way that makes me nervous for his precious hands. He doesn’t look at me that much, including now. He’s still examining his work. “You’re doing a degree in illustration.”
“Yeah, I am.”
“Could you draw up some designs? I don’t have time.”

I start to get flustered. “Oh, well, I wouldn’t really know what kinds of things to do.”
“Well, we don’t usually go for traditional type things in the shop, so if you can think of something that’s Christmassy but also, like, bright and modern and fun, that’d be unreal.”
“Mhm.”
“Do you have a portfolio?”
“Not really, just sketchbooks.”
“You’ve not done any kind of client work or anything?”
“Only a shop window.” I clear my throat awkwardly, unsure if I even want to admit to the work I did in Tullamore. “I did some window typography for a cafe during the summer.”
“You like typography?”
“Yeah it’s cool.” I shrug. “But I’d say I’m not very good at it.”
Simon’s mouth twitches up into as much of a smile as he appears to be capable of. “Why don’t you give something a lash for me, just see if you can come up with some fun Christmas card ideas that might incorporate interesting lettering. I don’t know.” He hunches back over his work so I know we’re finished discussing this. “Anything you want, Evie. I’m giving you full creative control, as long as it has a vibe.”

Full creative control is as terrifying as a blank page. I give him an almost inaudible “Okay” and go over to an empty table with a stack of paper to start trying to figure something out. What does that mean, anyway? A ‘vibe’? I sigh and start scribbling something down. 
I work through the morning and halfway into lunch, only realising it is when I surface from the haze of my creative flow to find everybody else gone. I fish around in my bag for the sad sandwich I prepared that morning and then get right back to work. I like it. I have no idea what I’m doing but I like doing it anyway. Sometimes when I get like this I wish that I didn’t have to eat or sleep or use the bathroom, like, I wish my body was a machine that could keep on drawing infinitely, churning out more and more work without the interruptions of my body’s needs.

Eventually the others come back and the sounds of press cranking and plate carving resume, and I am engrossed in what I’m doing. Gabriel passes behind me at some point and gives a little ‘hm’ of approval. “I like your lettering.” He says. “Thanks.” I say.

I only realise the whole day has passed me by when a soft voice from the corner of the room pipes up. “Pub?” Simon cranes his neck like a submarine periscope and glances around the room at us. Without looking up, Gabriel says “Pub.”
“Pub.” Izzy agrees. 
I glance at the clock. It’s five already, and I feel like I’ve only just got into the swing of my card design. It kind of pains me that I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to get stuck back into it again. I haven’t even started thinking about colours yet. 
Izzy tosses a balled up piece of scrap paper onto my table. “Hey, Evie.” She says. “Tools down. Pub?”
“Oh.” I say. “I don’t know.”
“Come on. We’re just heading across into Smithfield for a pint or two. Look outside. The sun is absolutely belting down.”

“We won’t get many more evenings like this.” Simon adds. “It’d be a waste not to come.”
“I suppose I’m not doing anything anyway.” I’m never doing anything, ever. “I can come for a while.”
“Unreal.” Izzy says, and I reluctantly relinquish my coloured pencils and then within five minutes the studio is closed down and the lights are off. 
“I’ll join you in a while.” Petra says as we lock up the studio door. “I’ll just do the cash register and then pop down.” We tell her that we’ll see her there and head out onto the street.

last night i wore twisted peppermint and the night before that pumpkin pecan waffles.. these were two were the more jarring borderline unpleasant bbw body mists i’ve tried so far but after my initial shock, they’re the ones i’m perhaps most charmed by.. funny how that works.. in my head i imagined twisted peppermint would be much more gourmand vanilla, like a sugar cookie rolled in powdered sugar and topped with crushed candy cane pieces, but when i sprayed it all i thought was TOOTHPASTE! the DENTIST! i was in shock that This is one of the legendaric bbw holiday scents they bring back every damn year along with vanilla bean noel and winter candy apple because i didn’t know hoes wanted to smell so damn minty… it’s not a cozy sweet scent, it’s loud and invigorating and quite punchy. it kind of gives the innards of a york peppermint patty. i’m excited to play around with layering it. i think it would be a cute smell on sweet boys 🥰 then pumpkin pecan waffle. first spray filled me with revolt. candle. that awful bath body works sickly baked good candle smell in spray form. as a child i was so perturbed by those candles, this body mist really took me back there.. but as it softens it smells nice 😊 for some reason after that initial smell, i’m not disturbed by it so i must have worked thru my trauma and now just find it to be a cozy super sweet nutty maple-y vanilla gourmand. waffle house waitress vibes. for when u want people to ask if u just got off ur breakfast shift at the diner

Scent Test
ASHDKJAH I was looking for something and realized I never posted my fic research of me going to Bath and Body Works and genuinely sniffing every candle they had out so: here are my notes w/ typos and all :) I sorted them roughly (bc on the spot) from Best to NO primarily thinking about what soleil would like but inevitably influenced by my own tastes
scents I found Strong got an * in front, no-gos got an x (increasing number of x's based just how much i was like ❌❌❌❌❌❌ on first impression)
findings: - soleil would like the mellow-er scents over the super strong ones which is fine bc cyrill wouldn't have brought any of those anyway - would go Bonkers over the ones that smell like fresh laundry or the others' creamers or other little day-by-day surrounding scents. - he also likes bake-y and fruit-y scents. and lavender!! i don't really like lavender so it was surprising the first time i sniffed one and brain was like :00000000 he would go for it, and then by the end I was like HE WOULD GO FOR IT - meanwhile he dislikes floral-y or perfume-y scents and strong woods-y or cologne-y scents as they would be triggers for him - and then ofc, the names and scents of candles i wind up using in fic :)
this was. a four page document btw so be aware when you hit read more. at the end of this fic research I personally walked away with a hot cocoa and sugared lemon zest candle btw ^^ i'm ngl the hot cocoa was 80% bc it reminded me of ness

Best
- the linen and lavender is v mellow but he would LOVE this. It's got like a subtle spiciness and reminds him of dryer sheets
-The bubbly rose is surprisingly sweet, and v mellow. Smells fruitier than champagne toast I think it's the cranberry
But the champagne toast is even More mellow
-the hot cocoa and cream smells good :) the Choco is v up in ur face but not overpowering
-*Merry Cookie
-*Spiced gingerbread smells like merry cookie but w/more spice lol
-*sugared lemon zest is v strong and v sweet and zesty
-*limoncello is somehow More strong and just as good, much more straight up Sugar Candy (Soleil would prefer the sugar zest)
-* the sundrenched linen smells v laundry-y, I think Soleil would like the smell but it's also v strong 
-*Spiced citrus Grove is really strong but it's really nice, I think it would subconsciously remind Soleil of both Cyrill and athena
-crunchy English toffee smells like toffee :) v sweet and not Strong but getting there
-Cinnamon caramel swirl
-straeberry pound cake smells v sweets and if U really inhale u can smell like, a super ripe strawberry that's sat and gotten super juicy, oops Soleil would like that a lot
-peach belline really peach sweet w a hint of zest (the sweet orange ig)
-the white pumpkin smells spicy but has a nice warm tone to it, probs the caramel
-Winter candy apple v sweet and mellow
-the champagne apple and honey is lightly sweet and mellow
-the raspberry mimosa is v sweet
-same w/ midnight blue citrus w/ the mango, v nice and mellow
-the lavender vanilla is v underwhelming so I think Soleil might like it, esp bc like lavender and soothing qualities or so he's heard
-raspberry thumbprint is v There if u know what ur looking for, has a good mix of the two but it's kinda weird bc they're So mixed? Idk
-vanilla bean
-punpkin pecan waffles has a warm effect to it (probs the maple syrup but otherwise is too difficult to parse)

-vanulla bean noel isn't v strong (the lotion is stronger)
The after scent on it is v warm likecaraml scents
-*Crushed candy smells more like candy than the twisted peppermint
-peppermint sugar cookie has a??? Kind of mellow scent to it? Like smth from bath time? It might be the creamy butter??
-tis the season has a v appley kind of scent that mixes well with the spice and it's quite mellow (Soleil would like this one a lot)
-straeberry snowflakes faintly sweet and faintly like, creamy ig (w/ the whipped cream)
-the cinnamon spiced vanilla is not as good as merry cookie but it's not bad (not as in ur face)
-wildberry ube is fruity and sweet but it has a lingering after scent
-laundry day straight up smells like a laundromat Including the like, heat of them but Soleil would Not be familiar with that and would prefer linen and lavender
-iced winter balsam smells v lemony (eucalyptus)at first but then the pine and balsam come in except they kind of linger after that
-winter pear forest smells brightly of pears w/ some woodsy undertones. If u like. Inhale really hard the pear picks up
-cocoa roasted chestnuts is v acceptable but I can't tell what it is lol?
-cedar and suede is v underwhelming so acceptable
-holiday just smells really spicy, so does cinnamon stick
-frosted coconut snowball is nice but hard to parse
-sugared pomegranate smells nice but it's afterscent is kinda :/
-balsam and bergamot inoffensive 
-luminous and a thousand wishes kinda hm. Not enough to like not enough to dislike

-*bright Christmas morning is v fruity sweet and would be nice if it wasn't so strong
-pistachio toasted vanilla has that v nutty lingering scent
-frosted cranberry has an undertone that's kinda strong and not v fruity

-x vanilla Birchwood and idek what it's trying to smell like
-The sugared snickerdoodle smells more like wax than anything else? Maybe i got a dud
-Golden Berry Mistletoe is v hard to parse, but it smells like it would be in a bathroom

-*So does the sweet cinnamon pumpking but that one's super overwhelming

-Hot pink cocoa really does smell like ruby chocolate but it's also erring towards too strong
- the caramel frappuchino smells Exactly as advertised, Soleil would love this bc it reminds him of mornings
-i did not like cozy cashmere at first bc it's kinda perfumey but then caught the lavender and vanilla which Soleil would like, even w/ the sandalwood bc the sw is not Too strong

- bordering on dislike the afternoon rainfall is way too sweet for what it advertised, I think it's the aloe which I always get in my bubble tea lol
