Spring signs.
Pointleaf manzanita (Arctostaphylos pungens) blooming in Cochise County, Arizona.
Etymology note: The binomial for this species is fun to unpack. Arctos is from a Greek word meaning bear, staphylos (from the Greek staphyle) for clusters of fruit that resemble a bunch of grapes, and pungens from a Latin word meaning prick or puncture, for the sharply pointed leaves – prickly bear grapes!

While working his way up a steep ridgeline Teddy happened across this Manzanita Flower clinging to the side of the mountain. The delicate little lanterns thriving on this hike brought Teddy a sense of strength through their blooming. Given the harshness of the environment Teddy was feeling the strain, seeing these reminded him that even the small and delicate have a place on this Earth. He realized that you can bloom through adversity.

Arctostaphylos rainbowensis
Plants in the genus Arctostaphylos are commonly known as manzanitas, and California has more species than anywhere else. This one is Arctostaphylos rainbowensis, found in the hills of southern California between San Diego on the south, Los Angeles on the northwest, and Palm Springs on the northeast. The clusters of urn-shaped flowers in shades of white and pink are typical of the genus.

Daisy Hudson - Cheerful - Clumsy Collector
Daisy's passion for all things green and growing is evident in everything she does. Whether she's tending to the community garden or whipping up a delicious meal with fresh ingredients, her love for nature shines through.
Daisy's dreams of owning a flower shop in the future or possibly a farm where she can grow her own produce. With her positive attitude and personality, there's no doubt that Daisy will continue to bloom wherever life plants her.
Daisy lives at No 1 Manzanita Terrace and has gotten to know her neighbours quite well. Interestingly, she hasn't seemed to click with Gia Angelo at No 2, feeling as though Gia looks down on her. On a brighter note, Daisy has formed a strong bond with Grant and Isla at No 3. She has been sharing gardening tips and the wonders of the great outdoors with Grant’s daughter Isla. Spending more time with Grant, they have started to grow closer, engaging in deep conversations. However, they often find themselves interrupted by the captivating Gia, who consistently manages to undermine Daisy in front of Grant and insert herself between them.

Pointleaf* manzanita (Arctostaphylos pungens), Cochise County, Arizona.
This is a plant that keeps giving in beauty. Its flowers in late February are a sure sign that spring is returning to the sky island woodlands. And I love seeing its maturing fruit, and the cinnabar and ochre colors of its exfoliating bark as summer begins.
[*Autocorrect wanted this to be pointless manzanita, when it is anything but.]

Pacific Madrone
Arbutus_menziesii_jko10010800/jko/nwplants.com CC-BY-3.0.
General Description
Twisting skyward, the smooth, reddish-brown branches of a Pacific madrone tree are striking. Esteemed botanist, Willis Linn Jepson, described it as “a tree than which none other in the western woods is more marked by sylvan beauty.”
Arbutus menziesii, also called madroño, or the strawberry tree (for its berries), is an evergreen member of the heath family (Ericaceae), closely related to blueberries, mountain laurels, rhododendrons, and manzanita. Madrone trees can reach up to 40 m (130 ft), though more typically they are half that height. Its upper red-brown bark peels each summer in thin strips to reveal smooth, greenish-yellow bark that ripens into a deep, dark red color. White, fragrant, urn-shaped flowers (8 mm; 1/3 in) dangle in clusters at the ends of branches. Scarlet red, bumpy berries (8–12 mm) ripen in the fall and may last into early winter. Alternate, oval leaves (10–15 cm; 4–6 in long) are leathery and glossy dark green above and lighter grayish below. New leaves replace the old ones every two years before the old ones fall off.
Ecology
The Pacific madrone thrives in full sunlight and depends on periodic fire to create forest openings.
Birds, like robins, cedar waxwings, bandtailed pigeons, and quail eat its berries. Other berry-eaters include mule deer, raccoons, and bears. Woodpeckers and other cavity nesting birds, like mountain chickadees, house wrens, and western bluebirds nest in madrones.

Hi, yes, I would like to know what plant I am! (Also, unrelated, but every time I pull up your blog I’m like 10th Kingdom ftw!!!)
yes!!! love finding 10th kingdom fans <333
and thanks for asking!
i would say you are Arctostaphylos viscida (whiteleaf manzanita).
it is a shrub in the Ericaceae (heath) family
it has beautiful red bark that shreds off and replaces itself with more red bark, as well as gorgeous white/pinkish urn-shaped flowers (typical of the heath family) that turn into drupes (they look like berries, but botanically speaking are considered a drupe) and are edible when ripe (can be made into a cider. very good to have in a survival situation).
this manzanita is native to California.
i chose it for you because you are a very analytical person who thinks a lot and tries to come up with interpretations continuously over time and always tries to find something new/different
whiteleaf manzanita has evolved such that the seeds require fire to germinate (most of the time. it technically can without, but is most often reproduced post-fire). while most of the manzanita's perish from wildfire, whiteleaf manzanita has adapted and evolved to be resistant and resilient against it, so far as requiring it for germination ❤️
(i know in the pic the bark looks orange, but trust me in person is a beautiful deep red)
