Applying green chemistry principles to iron catalysis
At the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis in Rostock, Dr. Johannes Fessler has developed new methods for the synthesis of drug precursors using catalysts made of iron, manganese and cobalt. Each of these three chemical elements has the potential to replace a number of noble metals that are commonly used in organic chemistry to catalyze fine chemicals. Platinum and palladium, for example, are expensive due to their rare occurrence, their extraction is costly and they release large quantities of the greenhouse gas CO2. One of the goals of "green" chemistry is therefore to dispense with such noble metals in organometallic catalysis in the future. Johannes Fessler gained his findings as part of his dissertation, which he defended in January. He has reported on it in Chemical Science, together with his doctoral supervisor Prof Dr. Matthias Beller and his research group leader Dr. Kathrin Junge. For example, you can read how a complex active ingredient candidate based on pyrrole, a common drug precursor, is created from "simple starting materials" with the help of an acid-tolerant homogeneous iron catalyst and at room temperature.

very pleased with this glaze test. developed a new recipe attempting to get a more matte surface, but still lovely results. this one uses manganese, copper and iron to color the surface. neither of these actively color crystals (best crystal-coloring elements are nickel, cobalt and REE's] but in the absence of these, manganese and iron generally take front stage
looks like the full supermoon was extra generous with the pottery gods on this run 🙏
going to have lots of fun playing with variations of this recipe!

Norway’s parliament authorised deep-sea mining
Norwegian lawmakers gave the green light for deep-sea exploration around the Arctic Archipelago of Svalbard on January 9, sparking concern among environmental groups.
Members of the national parliament authorised deep-sea exploration in the 281,200 square kilometre area on Tuesday to pave the way for commercial exploitation of the minerals abundant in the North Atlantic shelf.
The region is wealthy in copper, manganese, cobalt and lithium, raw materials identified by the EU as of strategic importance as they are considered a prerequisite for the transition to a green and digital economy. Such minerals are currently mined in several countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, China and Russia.
In the Critical Raw Materials Act passed by the EU last December, these minerals were three of 16 listed among the highest-priority strategic raw materials.

MANGANESE:
Easily confused with magnesium
The reason for the similar names was because magnesium and manganese were originally grouped together in a group called magnesia
TECHNETIUM:
The first element in the periodic table that cannot be found in nature and does not have a stable form

Experimental Evidence for a New Type of Magnetism
Spectroscopic data suggest that thin films of a certain semiconducting material can exhibit altermagnetism, a new and fundamental form of magnetism. [...] In 2022, theorists gave a name to a new class of magnetic order: altermagnetism (see Viewpoint: Altermagnetism Then and Now). Materials that exhibit this phenomenon are predicted to have no net magnetization and an electronic band structure that is split into spin-up and spin-down bands, giving these materials properties of both antiferromagnets and ferromagnets. Despite extensive effort, strong experimental evidence for the existence of altermagnetic materials has been lacking. Such evidence has now been found by Changyoung Kim at Seoul National University in South Korea and his colleagues [1]. The researchers say that the distinctive properties of altermagnets could be useful for spin-based electronics.

this is a copper and manganese crystalline glaze, with its own structure opposed to the copper/iron, thanks to having different base recipes.
super pleased with the ultra-large crystals, ranging from gold to a hint of chartreuse, vibrant light and dark surrounding bands, sitting on a beautiful pale gray background. has a very formal feel to this glaze, and looking forward to putting this on future work. super stable as well, one of my favorites in this batch.
