I was just perusing tags on that post about Connor Kent being referred to as “the think of steel” and i saw your tags and now I have to ask, because I am relatively new to caring about DC at all, but does it Actually stand for Detective Comics?! this is breaking my worldview a little.
So the 'DC' did originally stand for 'Detective Comics' BUT by the time 'DC Comics' became the legal name for the company, the 'DC' was no longer really intended as an acronym.
The name 'DC Comics' started more so as a colloquial term (publisher called ‘Detective Comics, Inc.’ puts logo on their comics that just says ‘DC’ -> since ‘DC’ is the label on the comics, people start calling them ‘DC Comics’) that then eventually became official due to its wide use, but it’s not like ‘Detective Comics Comics’ was the company's intended name. It’s just a lil jokey joke some of us use that’s rooted in the true origin of the company’s name.
To back this up/build a timeline about this, I'm going to pull excerpts from some books i’ll link at the end!
So, years and events of note:
[Then] in 1935, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson's National Allied Publications came out with New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine #1— the first time original characters and stories had appeared in a comic book format.¹
In 1937, Major Wheeler-Nicholson found himself financially overextended with his printer. In order to continue publishing, he had little choice but to take Harry Donenfeld on as a partner. Detective Comics, Inc., was formed early that year, with Wheeler-Nicholson and Donenfeld's business manager, Jack S. Liebowitz, listed as owners.¹
The new company's first production, Detective Comics #1 (March 1937) was the first true DC comic book. The character of Batman was introduced in issue #27 (May 1939) of that series.¹
[in 1938] Harry Donenfeld was now CEO of both National Allied Publications and its sister company Detective Comics, Inc. Liebowitz managed the offices, heading up accounting and the creative activities, while Donenfeld expanded the distribution through Independent News. Not long after that, National Allied Publications and Detective Comics were merged to form a new entity called National Comics. But even back then the company was known colloquially as DC.¹
Reluctant to add extra titles to DC's schedule, Jack Liebowitz and publisher Maxwell C. Gaines started a sister company called All-American Comics in 1940. Its roster of characters would include the Flash, the Green Lantern, Hawkman—and eventually Wonder Woman, the first major female superhero.¹
By 1940, a circular logo containing the letters “DC” (short for Detective Comics, Inc.) was appearing on the covers of the firm’s publications; from then on readers called them DC Comics, although decades would pass before the change became official.²
In 1944 Liebowitz merged All-American into National Comics. Then he organized National Comics, Independent News, and other affiliated firms into a single corporate entity, National Periodical Publications. This was the direct precursor of today's DC Comics.¹
In 1976, Jenette Khan became DC’s new publisher. […] One of her first decisions was to drop the euphemistic company name, National Periodical Publications. After all, she reasoned, “readers tended to refer to us as DC Comics.”²

Vin Sullivan
Tumblr media
Back in my first post about Detective Comics #27, and later when talking about Sheldon Moldoff, I mentioned Vincent Sullivan who was an editor for DC and also helped found it. He's mostly known for greenlighting Superman, but he also helped with the creation of Batman when he turned to Bob Kane. But that getting ahead of ourselves...
Sullivan was an artist with no formal training, just started drawing when he was a kid, who has stated that he had no real influence. One of the earliest thing he recalled drawing was a Christmas Wreath in his elementary prep school in Brooklyn. Once out of schooling he started looking for work as a cartoonist trying to sell strips and started at the NY Daily news as a freelance sport cartoonist after the founder, Captain Patterson, saw some of his work.
Eventually Vin met Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, though he doesn't recall how, and then eventually Whitney Ellsworth. With those two they would found National Allied Publications, aka DC Comics and took care of nearly everything but financing, that was Nicholsons job; however, in 2-3 years he would be bought out by Harry Donenfeld. He kept around with Donenfeld and Jack Liebowitz, "they had the distribution, they had a little bit of cash", doing some labor.
While he worked at DC, Vin Sullivan would be responsible for picking up Superman by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and later was the one who tasked Bob Kane to make a hero to become just as famous, which became Batman. Siegel and Shuster had a few previous features that would feature in Action Comics, which is how Sullivan met them, and when they showed him Superman he "thought it was a novel idea" and gave them two or three issues to see how it would go, which be very well to have the Man of Steel appear in every other cover for the series.
After 3 or 4 years, Ellsworth would briefly leave after getting married, leaving Sullivan. Things got a bit much and Sullivan left, Ellsworth would return as the company needed someone "who knew the business". Vin Sullivan would then create Magazine Enterprises in about the 40s just before the war; he was approached by by Charlie McAdam, head of the McNaught Syndicate, who with his friend Frank Markey wanted to get into comics. It would eventually close in the late 1950s possibly due to the building negativity toward comics. Sullivan would start up a food company, Popeye Peanut Butter, which would soon fold.
And interesting little fact: when it came to publishing in other countries, Sullivan would make the deals, but he couldn't get the money out of the countries and it would accumulate and he we go over to the countries and have to use the accumulated money there.

Upcoming DC Movies in 2023 That’ll Decide DC’s Future
Tumblr media
DC Comics was introduced by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1934 and is known as Detective Comics. It gained popularity with the audience when they could not watch high-graphic movies. People used to read comics and relate them to the pictures designed in those comic books in this era. As time passed, new superheroes were introduced by DC Comics. Superman was the first superhero, and the story was written by Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster. Now DC Comics is getting back on track, and we'll see four new movies this year. Yes, DC Comics is attempting to compete with Marvel's incredible film, generating a lot of buzzes. We all know how hard they've worked on their characters and storylines since 2008, when Batman debuted as the Dark Knight. Superman debuted as the Man of Steel in 2013. The audience is becoming like a coconut; they pretend to be something from the outside and something else from the inside. No matter how much you show your love for Marvel, deep down in your heart, you know that DC Comics is also working great, and their hard work is paying off. Want to know how and why DC Comics is getting better day by day? Let’s find out by reading the full article about the upcoming DC movies in 2023.
Upcoming DC movies in 2023
Shazam! Fury of the Gods (DC Comics)
Tumblr media
Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be released on a global scale very soon. This film was supposed to be released on April 1, 2022, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it has been pushed back to June 20, 2023. The movie Shazam was picked from Fawcett Comics and published by DC Comics, and now they're the original project holders of this comic. The first Shazam movie! was launched by the director David F. Sandberg on April 5, 2019. The film had a budget of ten crores USD and received numerous nominations, including the MTV Movie & TV Award for best comedic performance. We all know how fantastic this movie was with Zachary Levi's and Asher Angel's comic timing and the best cameo role of Superman at the end, and we'll be seeing them all again in movie theaters worldwide. About the movie
Tumblr media
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is all about the Mamaragan's (the Old Shazam Wizard's) magical staff, and it's the primary source of Shazam! God has the power and is good enough to become a god, and he can bestow godly powers on anyone. In this movie, the three Daughters of Atlas, Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and Anthea (Rachel Zegler), are the main villains who are after this magic staff because they believe that the power of Shazam! is stolen by the children. To reclaim all of the powers from the Shazam family, these sisters intend to take the magic staff and repair its power of transferring Shazam's power, which Billy broke in the first installment of Shazam. Tumblr media
If we talk about the magic staff, like how powerful it is, you can compare it with Thor's Mjölnir; both can give the powers of the gods to anyone, but both are slightly different because of Mjölnir. Mjölnir's specialty is the power of thunder, which can destroy anything that gets in its way, but to use it, the weapon's holder must be worthy and have a pure heart.  That's why it's a pure form of weapon, and its primary intention of creation was to destroy the opponent on the battlefield. The magic staff has both elements of destruction and creation with the power of thunder, which can give the power of god to anyone worthy and make them a warrior, but it can also create its own life form and give new life to any being in this world that is dead. In this way, the magic staff wins the race for power. The Flash Movie (DC Comics)
Tumblr media
Flash is a DC comic character who can dash; he gained this ability while working in his lab, attempting to capture the extra-dimensional yellow energy that killed his mother when he was a child. One day when Barry Alan was in his lab, he was so frustrated and was planning how to catch the yellow extraterrestrial energy. Still, unfortunately, red lightning energy blew up from the window when he threw the small machine at it, and then it entered the lab and stroked his body. After this incident, he remained unconscious, or we can say he was in a coma for nine months, and when he woke up, he found some changes in his body, like he was feeling starving and the fat percentage of his body was too low, and he got six-pack abs. He noticed that he could see everything in slow motion at times, but he had no idea that this was the energy that struck him; it was absorbed by his body while he was in his lab, and he gained the ability to run faster than a bullet train. It was the red lightning energy that was reacting in his body.  ALSO READ: An Interesting tour of Japan’s period movie Sansho the Bailiff Powers of the Flash
Tumblr media
We can compare Flash's speed to Superman's speed; if we watch an episode of Superman the animated series, we can see how, as time passed, Barry Allan unlocked the powers within him to run in the form of light. Gradually he broke all the limits of speed and the dimensional wall, which headed to create or introduce the multiverse in the DC Universe. In this movie, the main character, Barry Allan, is played by Ezra Miller. Barry Allan tries to do time travel so that he can save his mother from getting murdered by Eobard Thawne (the Evil Yellow Flash), but when Barry Allan creates the gate of the multiverse, it changes the whole reality of the present, past, and future.  He also meets another version of Barry Allen, played by Grant Gustin, who looks more attractive, is more confident, and is smarter than him. ALSO READ: Chainsaw Man Season 2: Release date, caste, and everything you need to know Why is The Flash movie getting too hot? According to some sources, we can see Superman (Henry Cavill), Supergirl (Sasha Calle), Batman (Ben Affleck), and another universe's Flash (Grant Gustin) in this movie.  After all, we'll be seeing Multiverse for the first time in any DC movie, which excites the audience, and we're all excited to watch and can't wait for the release of this movie in June 2023. Blue Beetle (DC Comics)
Tumblr media
Blue Beetle was first introduced in the 1967 comic book Blue Beetle and was expanded in 1986 in another comic book, Blue Beetle: Secret Origins #2, Blue Beetle #1 (2006), and Blue Beetle #1 (2011) will be featured in this film. Several characters became Blue Beetles.  The first man who became the Blue Beetle was an archaeologist named Dan Garry, who found the temple, and while he was doing his research there, he found a beetle-shaped scarab. He took it with him to his lab, and when he was researching it, he touched it, and the scarab was fused with his body.  Then, he didn’t know what happened to him, but soon he was shocked when he tested his power of super strength.
Tumblr media
In every generation of DC comics, we can see that three characters got the Blue Beetle powers. When Dan died, he gave the Beetle Scarab to his friend Ted Kord, but soon he realized that it was not an ancient artifact but some kind of alien technology. One of Ted's good friends inspired him to become Blue Beetle with no superpowers. Still, as time passed, Ted accepted the Scarab's supernatural powers and became the Super Hero, Blue Beetle, and the Scarab was passed down to a teenage boy named Jaime Reyes, who became the final Blue Beetle. Tumblr media
According to sources, American actor Xolo Mariduea, also known as Victor Graham in the Parenthood series and Miguel Diaz in the Cobra Kai series on Netflix, is playing the role of Jamie Reyes (Blue Beetle). The supervillain would be Victoria Chord, and the beautiful American actress Susan Sarandon, also known for many other super hits like Helen Prejean's in Dead Man Walking, Pearl there are some possibilities that Ben Affleck is also playing the role of Batman in a cameo scene. Why you should watch this movie?
Tumblr media
We’ll see more action in this movie, and the new DC series will begin. As we all know, DC has released Justice League twice: the first time on November 17, 2017, and the second time on March 18, 2021, with deleted scenes from the first.
Tumblr media
The character Blue Beetle is connected with Batman and Robin in manga and anime, too, and if we talk about another comic of the DC Universe, Jamie Reyes (Blue Beetle) is a part of the Teen Titans. Without Batman, this movie will be incomplete, and everyone knows that where there’s justice, there’s Batman.
Tumblr media
So now that DC is trying to introduce the Teen Titans movie soon on the big screen, that's why the characters of the Teen Titans appear gradually in DC movies. We saw one scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice where Batman looks at Robin's suit and is spoiled by the Joker: "HAHAHA Jokes on you, Batman." This is how DC Universe cleverly introduces another line of comic characters to bring their new teams.  ALSO READ: Ichi The Killer Full Movie Review, And Ending Explained
Tumblr media
After seeing all of these strategies, there's no doubt we'll see a DC film similar to The Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox as a sequel to Zack Snyder's The Justice League. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Tumblr media
In 2018, we already watched the movie Aquaman. The Handsome Hunk Jason Momoa played the lead male role of Aquaman, and the gorgeous Amber Heard played the female lead role of Mera.  This film was a worldwide box office success, earning $ 1.148 billion, and now its sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II playing the character of Black Manta. This movie was going to release on December 16, 2022, but for some reason, it will terminate in December 2023. In this movie, Aquaman is trying to protect Atlanta and the rest of the planet from the big danger of the Black Manta and his troops, who will try to conquer the world Earth through Atlantis. Aquaman deals with another country and makes his own army to protect Atlantis from Black Manta and his soldiers. I don’t know much about it, but according to the source, these are the facts that we can see in the movie Aquaman 2, and its trailer will be released very soon. We can now see some of the Aquaman 2: Behind the Scenes videos on YouTube. Why DC fans are waiting for Aquaman and the lost kingdom?
Tumblr media
We've all been anticipating this film since we saw the first installment, a mix of action, thrills, comedy, and romance.  We all loved watching how Atlanna's son Arthur Curry became the Aquaman, who never worried about returning to his homeland: Atlantis because he was unaware of it, and when he discovered that he has all the special powers because of his mother.
Tumblr media
Atlanna, the former queen of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, he returns there and takes revenge for his mother and becomes the Aquaman by pulling out the trident from his mother.  According to the sources, we’ll see Ben Affleck as Batman in this movie, which means the new danger is on its way to Earth. História
Origens

Golden Age Batman
Tumblr media
DC is well known today as a world of dark grittiness and goth, but truthfully, despite all the bad things that happen, DC is in actuality a world of Family. Found or otherwise. It is the family and friendships of the heroes that draw people in, that despite all the bad things that can, and have happened, there will always be someone to turn to. It’s a world of hope and overcoming adversaries (personally or a costumed foe).
The company was first founded in 1934 as National Allied Publications by Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, alongside Editors Whitney Ellsworth and Vin Sullivan, with the first series being New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine and is one of the oldest American comic book publishing companies. In a few years however, Printer Harry Donenfeld would cause problems for Wheeler-Nicholson by putting him in debt to Donenfeld and pushing him to form a partnership with him and accountant Jack Liebowitz to eventually make DC. The mounting debts pushed Wheeler-Nicholson to sell his share of DC and declare bankruptcy. Meanwhile Max Charles Gaines would partner with Liebowitz to create All-American Publications around 1938. Eventually in 1945 Gaines would sell his share to Liebowitz to start EC, Educational Comics. Donenfeld and Liebowitz would consolidate their companies to form National Comics Publications. The company would officially be known as DC comics in 1977.
Harry Donenfeld was in essence a conman and apparently he would go to parties and brag about knowing mob guys like Frank Castello. But he didn’t know how to balance books and manage a company, and thus Jack Liebowitz came in. They made their fortune in post racy Pulp stories, the kind of tales that many people would actually go to jail over, to get out of that though Harry would once have to talk an employee into taking the rap for him for a lifetime job. Finding the threat of jail too imposing, Harry and Jack needed to change focus and prayed upon the Major.
DC would hit it’s stride with the publication of Action Comics staring Superman, created by sons of Jewish immigrants Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Detective Comics was started in March of 1937 that featured various detective characters, super or civilian, with the longest appearing character being the Caped Crusader himself, The Batman. It’s from this comic that the company DC would get its initials. And although Action Comics, home of The Superman, published weekly in comparison to Detective Comics bi-weekly would lead to it reaching the 1000th issue first, Detective Comics would become the 3rd American comic to publish a 1000 issues, 4-color comics being the first, in part due to the New 52 issues restoring its original issue count. As of August 26th of 2022, Detective Comics has reached #1063 and has spawned its own series of Annuals and Specials.
How this came together started in 1939 when Vin Sullivan was looking for a successor to follow Superman and turned to gag cartoonist Bob Kane. Batman would appear in issue #27 of Detective Comics and was created, and designed, by Bob Kane with the stories being written by Bill Finger. The issue hit shelves March 30, 1939 were we would be introduced to high-class socialite Bruce Wayne and Police Commissioner Gordon and it was a simple story of greed, of a man willing to kill his business partners for money. Funnily enough at the end of the issue the criminal would fall into a vat of acid, though he would simply die. The thing was, he fell due to Batman’s hands, deliberately, remarking “A fitting end for his kind.”  Obviously this is very different from the caped crusader that we are used to.
Bob Kane took the Superman look and made various alterations to the design and drawing inspiration from Leonardo Di Vinci’s work and illustrations of the first sort of “glider,” (though Kane had it as actual wings and Finger made it into a cape) which Kane felt looked like a bat which triggered a memory of the movie The Bat Whispers based on The Circular Staircase book, which has impacted the horror genre since though Kane took it to make a sinister good guy. And with Bill Finger they took inspiration of past characters in Zoro with Douglas Fairbanks, Sr--who was Kane's idol as a kid--Pulp Fiction heroes such as The Shadow, with Finger stating that "I patterned my style of writing Batman after The Shadow" and there being many characters and plots eh adapted into the comics*, as well as Doc Savage.
Kane would hire collaborators to assist in the venture such as Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson, Dick Sprang, and Gardner Fox. Bill was one of the comic book world’s great writers and it was him that Kane credited with turning Batman from a superhero-vigilante into a more scientific detective. Gardner was one of Batman’s longest writers, writing well into the 60s.
Issue #28 would feature the first recurring villain in Doctor Death, #29 with the glass gas pellets, #31 with the batarang and the bat-gyro, which would be replaced in Batman #1 (1940) with the batplane, #1 would also feature the introduction of Catwoman and The Joker. And the mugging and murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne in Detective Comics #33. Interestingly enough, Robin would make his debut rather early in #38.
Despite being reprinted many times, Detective Comics #27 would sell for big bucks today, selling for $1.07 million in 2010 despite its initial price at the time being a simple 10 cents. Bruce Wayne and his rogues gallery, many a character that could appear in a series of their own, has appeared on every merch imaginable, you could probably live on Batman. He inspired countless people from college studies and documentary films to memes and parodies. You can even take a Batman class at RICE College, Glasgow Clyde College, and a physical course at the University of Victoria. There is no doubt that regardless of who you are or where you’re from or even if you read superhero comics, you know of The Batman.
*Voodoo Master -> Doctor Death, The Crime Ray Novel -> 1940 edition of Worlds Fair Comics, Serpents of Siva -> Detective Comics #35, Fate Joss -> Detective Comics #39, Chemically Induced Fear -> Scarecrow, Time Master -> Clock King, Grim Joker -> The Joker, The Laughing Corpse (Shadow radio show) (PS apparently a trope by this time though) -> Joker Venom, AutoGiro -> Batplane, Shadow's yellow boomerang -> Batarang, Escaping death traps, ect - Detective Comics: 80 Years of Batman: The Deluxe Edition
Shadow's creator adapted from Batman too, with a youthful sidekick. Said creator, Walter B. Gibson, would end up writing for some Batman stories.
Bob Kane: You'd think one part of the creative process for making Batman would get his own spotlight, but I think he had well enough of a spotlight in the spotlight on the Bat's creation. In any case, coming out of Highschool, having studied a mail-order art course, Kane first got his footing with the Eisner and Iger Shop in '38 and did some filler strips for DC. After meeting Bill Finger at a party and finding the shoe salesman's exceptional vocabulary impressive, invited Finger to help develop the strip Rusty and His Pals in Action Comics. This partnership was apparently satisfying to Kane as he would invite Finger to help develop Clip Carson and then with Batman. Kane was quite proud of his character as Stan Lee would note that Kane would go say, “Hey you’ve seen Batman? It was the biggest movie of the year! Where’s Spider-Man?” Kane wouldn’t stay in this world long enough to see the Friendly Neighborhood Hero hit the screens.
Bill Finger: As a child, Bill Finger developed a habit of reading after being bedridden with scarlet fever, reading stories from Frank Merriwell to The Shadow to Dickens. It was from this that Finger developed an extensive vocabulary and expressive turn of phrase that drew in Bob Kane, who he met at a party, and Kane invited Finger to help develop Rusty and His Pals for Adventure Comics. From this came another strip with the two, Clip Carson, and then when Vince Sullivan asked Kane for a new character, Kane brought on Finger to help develop the series. It was Finger that came up with any aspects of the character, such as his name. Bill Finger says he got the name ‘Bruce’ from the Scottish patriot Robert Bruce and 'Wayne’ from Anthony Wayne, as Finger wanted a last name “that would suggest colonialism”. Bill Finger’s well-read history certainly went into influencing Batman to a great degree, both as a writer for the stories and helping develop the character.
