Madrigal of the Kirin from Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy.

I have tried for years to paint this amazing character, and I think I’ve finally managed to do her justice. It’s a wonderful series that I’ve read probably 20 times.

Encanto - Mythical Companions Au

Just as the title says, this is an au where, during the gift ceremony, the Madrigals also receive a mythical animal companion that is connected to them. (Abuela and Mirabel also get companions despite their lack of a gift).

This companion often follows them around to help with chores or just to keep them company. Their mood often reflects the mood of the Madrigal their connected to and when the magic started to fade, they started acting off.

Anyway, here’s the list of who’s got what (so far, I might change them if a better option comes up):

Abuela has a phoenix. It was created from the flame of the candle when she was given the miracle. It’s never far from her or the family. It’s fire flickers with the candle and it’s quite fond of Mirabel.

Julieta has a unicorn. It’s as caring and doting as she is, though a bit more pushy in its efforts. When it isn’t helping Julieta transport her cooking, it hangs around her daughters, niece or nephews when they’re upset (or Augustin when he’s being clumsy).

Pepa has a Hippogriff. While Pepa suppresses her emotions so she doesn’t cause storms, her companion expresses them in her stead. It’s often grumpy and angry, and very protective of the grandkids (particularly of whoever was the youngest at the time). It seems that the only one that can calm it down completely is Felix.

Bruno has a Kirin. It normally follows Bruno around and back when he would give out prophecies, it would stand in the entrance of his prophecy cave being intimidating. It is also fond of the rats Bruno keeps. After the events of the movie it spends time with Julieta’s unicorn and Pepa’s hippogriff as well.

Isabela has a dragon. Not a typical dragon though, it’s the size of an eagle and spends most of its time sitting on her shoulder. It can blend in pretty well with flowers as it’s scales look like petals. Isabela tries to make it act perfect and most of the time it behaves, but it also ‘acts out’ sometimes while expressing what Isabela really feels (like blowing a burst of petals at Mariano).

Dolores has mothman. I’m torn between making it the classic black silhouette with red eyes or making it a colourful fluffy moth (or a mix of both), but either way it’s the tallest of the companions. It tends to stick around Dolores when she’s at home, but avoids going into town because of the noise. Whenever she’s overwhelmed by the noise, it will shelter her in it’s semi-soundproof wings. It’s very affectionate towards Mariano.

Luisa has a Cerberus. It is the size of a donkey and it looks like a mix of the Cerberus from Luisa’s song and a normal dog (haven’t decided on breed yet). It helps her in any way it can with her chores, though it sometimes urges her to take a break and/or play with it.

Camilo has a mimic. It can take the form of various inanimate objects, from a bracelet to a wagon, though it normally takes the form of whatever Camilo needs in that moment. He almost doesn’t use actual furniture any more, an example being using his mimic as a chair when sitting. It can either disguise itself (almost) completely or reveal that it’s a mimic with various non object things, though it always has a tell when it’s completely disguised. It gets along well with Casita.

Mirabel has a butterfly. When her door disappeared during her gift ceremony, a butterfly flew from the glow and landed on her hand. It can change colour in relation to family members (ie, red for Dolores, green for Bruno, etc), though it always has a golden yellow glow somewhere on it. It’s neutral state is also yellow. It doesn’t do much aside from guide Mirabel where she needs to go in order to help people.

Antonio has a griffin. This griffin is a mix of a toucan and a jaguar and Antonio often rides around on it. It loves pets and when it’s not around Antonio, it’s around another member of the family (most likely Mirabel or his parents).

Karou is a seventeen-year-old art student in Prague who is raised by chimaera (human/animal hybrids): Brimstone, Issa, Twiga, Yasri and a pet, Kishmish. She knows little about the chimaera apart from Brimstone's shop and lives as a normal human girl with the exception of the times when she has to complete missions for Brimstone - which normally include extracting teeth from various parts of the world. Brimstone offers wishes of varying degrees to these humans in exchange for teeth. He, however, has no qualms about giving Karou small wishes such as the one which lets her hair naturally blue. Later, Karou would find out that the teeth are representatives of pain, which is the tithe required in exchange for magic, and that they allow chimaera soldiers to be resurrected as revenants. Karou is first seen to lead life with normal teenage preoccupations such as her ex-boyfriend and finding time to hang out with her best friend, Zuzana.

One day, while she is on a mission for Brimstone, Karou encounters an angel, Akiva, who attacks her. She also notices scorched handprints on Brimstone's various portals all over the world, but has no chance to inform Brimstone of the phenomenon. As she lies semi-conscious from her injuries, she becomes aware of a never-before opportunity to explore Brimstone's workshop. Tired of secrets, she sneaks around to a forbidden door in Brimstone's workshop and encounters other revenants, one of whom is later revealed as Thiago, who tries to kill her. Brimstone saves Karou, but in his rage and worry for her safety, he casts her out. Later, the portals are all burned and Karou cannot find her way back.

To complicate matters, she re-encounters Akiva, for whom she has a mysteriously strong attraction to. After seeing her wishbone, he tells her that he knows who she is. They break the wishbone, and Karou's memories as her life as Madrigal, a chimaera soldier who was beheaded for falling in love with an angel, returns to her. She realizes that Akiva is her lover, but feels only fleeting joy as shortly after, Akiva confesses something devastating; he has killed her family - including Brimstone - and helped the angels win the war against the chimaera.
