What does Madoka Magica has to do with Christmas Cakes? I'm so confused...
It's not just Madoka, it's japanese culture in general! I've talked about this in an old ask, but I'll be brief: Basically, it's an ageist slang term to refer to an older woman (25+ years old)* and how she's no longer fresh for men.
The Magic System in Puella Magi Madoka Magica is ageist, and this clearly shown in how the Puella Magis function.
Incubators seek young girls to strike magical contracts, and they become Puella Magi, that eventually become Witches. A Witch is often described as a Puella Magi's matured form, and even Kyuubey confirms it at the end of the eighth episode:
"Since this country calls women who are still growing up shoujo (少女/girls), for girls who on the way of becoming majo (魔女/witches), it's logical to call them mahou shoujo (魔法少女/magical girls). It makes sense then, that since you’ll eventually become Witches, you should be called Magical Girls."
Kyuubey explains to Madoka about Entropy (or heat death of the Universe), and reveals that the cycle of the Puella Magi acts as a way to counter it; since Kyuubey's kin lacks emotions, they rely on the young girls' wavering emotions as an energy source (this argument not only is stupid because why would teenagers care about a cosmic energy crisis, it's also very toxic for those who deal with mental illnesses and trauma, as well as sexist because it leans on the Hysterical Woman trope, but that's a story for another day).
There's also a video on YT that criticizes the series on a meta level, and briefly talks about the Christmas cake term, as well as the harmful and misogynistic implications of the original Magic System.
I would also argue that most Magical Girl series are ageist to some degree, since magical women are a rarity, but since we're talking about MadoMagi, the focus of this ask was on this series (though its spin-off, Magia Record, has adult magical girls on its cast, such as Nanami Yachiyo, for example).
And with that I conclude that there should be more Magical Women on the Magical Girl genre, because adults are also allowed to escape the trials and tribulations of the real world when needed. We already have MagiLumiere Co. Ltd. (a manga series at MANGAPlus), but we can do better and have MORE of them. And if we can't have Magical Women, we'll MAKE some of our own.
*As I answer this ask, I'm currently 25 years old; ergo, a Christmas Cake. Though I don't give a hoot about it because cakes are tasty at any given time of the year, and societal expectations are bullshit.
