Thoughts on: Ikoku Nikki

I am currently reading Ikoku Nikki by Tomoko Yamashita and I noticed that like a solid quarter of the scenes in this manga do absolutely nothing to drive the plot forward.

It's not even funny banter or world building or whatever, it's literally just mundane little scenes like this:

You could honestly skip all of these scenes, and the plot would still make just as much sense.

But the thing is, I think doing so would make this manga considerably worse.

The manga is about a 15-year-old girl being taken in by her very introverted aunt, after losing her parents in an accident. And these mundane little scenes do an incredible job of grounding the whole story.

For one thing, it fleshes out the characters, it makes them feel real. You can really believe they all have their own lives with their own thoughts and feelings, their own problems and worries which are largely unrelated to the main plot.

It also makes the story feel very realistic. Like, yeah, sorry your parents just died, but you still need to go to school and worry about stuff like fucking lunchboxes. Yes, you just took in your orphaned teenage niece, but you still need to work... and maybe tidy up your room?

Just like in real life, the rest of the world in this manga doesn't care that the main character's world just got turned upside down. The earth just mercilessly keeps on spinning, and the protagonist has to go on living somehow, with all the mundanity and irrelevancy that comes with everyday life.

Witch Hat Atelier Review (Spoiler Free)

My thoughts from chapter 1 to chapter 70

This was unapologetically queer with a diverse cast in a unique setting.

The Worldbuilding... and one thing about me is I love a detailed setting from the people, animals to culture. I don't need another fantasy realm with magic without rules and here are dragons and other fantastical creatures. I need uniqueness in every book I consume. And this one just raised my expectations for other fantasy mangas. From the animals, power structure, the rules of magic to people, everything about it just caught my attention and engraved itself in my mind.

Then the characters. If I say I love all the characters, I AM NOT EXAGGERATING. But of course, my favorite will always be the tired man who looks like he hasn't slept in decades and pretends to be cold-hearted but takes better care of the kids than the one who is supposed to take care of the kids.

The story... I don't want to go into too much detail because I don't want to spoil it for anyone but you just gotta trust me and check it out for yourself.

The art... Need I say more?

11. Yes, I would. Despite his status and his eccentricities, I know he will treat me right.

13. I’m not sure if he can appreciate emoticons since the screen reader he will most likely use for his phone would just read them as the punctuation marks comprising them. As for emojis, probably the chipmunk emoji since those are the closest things he considers as companions while living in the woods.

23. Ooh, this is a good question. I think that another character similar to Yomotsu from a different fandom would be L’arachel from Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones. She’s a princess of Rausten who is classed as a Troubadour (a healer class on horseback in FE). She has an honorable goal of ridding the world of darkness and evil, albeit even it is for fame. She is also quite mature and provides emotional support to the protagonists in their time of need, despite her comical nature. All of these traits are quite similar to Yomotsu.

25. My first impressions of Yomotsu were much like Takao, I didn’t give him much thought. He was a nice character, even if we didn’t get to learn more about him. After I grew up and started to write stories, I started to appreciate him more and more. Now, I love the silly little sentai~
