|| 🍍• If Sonic 3 coming out later this year does embrace a Sonic Adventure 2/Sonic X take on Shadow’s Arc…
…I think he’ll be the one to try and get through to Shadow:
Tumblr media
Why?
Because of: Longclaw
Tumblr media
The one being who scarified themselves to ensure the other could survive and/or fulfill their future purpose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one being who scarified themselves to ensure the other could survive and/or fulfill their future purpose.
The similarities are uncanny, and - as much as I feel exploring the comparability between this all would be amazing - I’m hesitant to suggest that this was always the plan to complete a trilogy. It might not be. But I’m sus.
In this universe, we’re presented with a Sonic character who can - to some degree - directly relate to being ripped away from that one person in his life who was all he’d ever supposedly known, trusted, and cared for. If Movieverse Shadow follows close to other iterations and arcs of the character, the same trauma can naturally be said for him. And I feel that would lead to a very interesting set-up if done right. And Shadow isn’t made into some prick edgelord
Cue the: “How could you possibly know what loss feels like?” spiel mid-scuffle and Sonic snaps.
“Because I lost everything, too. I made a mistake, and…everything went wrong because of me…”
“Her name was Longclaw, and she protected me so I could get here. To safety. I put people in danger. I put her in danger because I wasn’t responsible. And now she’s gone.”
“I miss her everyday. Sometimes I wonder if things had been different…if I…”
“Look, I can be angry and upset about what I did; what happened, I still kinda’ am, but revenge isn’t going to bring Longclaw back.”
Sonic lost a great deal when he left Longclaw behind; his carer, his home, his everything. But throughout the Movieverse, he’s come to gain something just as beautiful - a caring family and amazing friends.
We also begin to journey alongside Sonic as he starts to get used to the idea of being responsible in Sonic 2 and concluding he still wanted to ‘be a kid’. And what could be more of a perfect act of responsibility and ‘growing up’ than directly showing another the power of being a just hero and supporting someone who’s pain he can understand.
Idek…just a few wee thoughts… :)

I will never get over the fact that somehow, SOMEHOW, they made Movie!Sonic the most precious and coolest little bean
Tumblr media
but at the same time they also made him
THE MOST THREATENING THING I'VE SEEN IN A WHILE????
Tumblr media
I MEAN
LOOK AT THIS DUDE
WHAT THE HECK
I refuse to believe that these two images have the same exact hedgehog.
There is NO WAY
There's something so incredible about Sonic being able to express certain emotions we haven't seen him shown in a while.
The movie series did an outstanding job of making Sonic such an relatable and an emotional character.
It always surprises me every time I watch certain moments from Sonic 2, (Best example is the scene where Sonic was running on water despite him being afraid of it and it always gives me chill. Especially with Ben's amazing performance.) and that includes THIS SCENE.
Like, Sonic and Ozzy were just having a movie night, but then Robotnik came back, along with a random Echidna he brought along with.
Robotnik tried to hunt him down and take away his powers and even tried to hurt Tom and Maddie in the process. Banishing him to the Mushroom Planet was the best thing he could do to make sure he won't hurt anybody again.
But after 9 months, Robotnik had unexpectedly returned right on Sonic's doorstep.
Of course Sonic is angry.
The one guy Sonic thought he'll never see again somehow came back after all.
Including his new ally. An Echidna. The same species who took out Longclaw when he was young.
He's not going to let Robotnik win. Not this time. Not ever.
And my God, I legit never felt freaked out whenever I see this shot.
Like HOLY CRAP.
He actually looks PISSED.
Not a single thing from this frame makes him look adorable or whatever.
He's just
and I'm kind of afraid to admit
REALLY TERRIFYING
I mean LOOK AT THAT SNARL
I WOULDN'T WANNA MESS WITH THIS DUDE
That's how amazing this looks. Just. Everything about this shot.
We needed more emotional Sonic, and this is one of the best examples for the reason why.

The Pirate Prince of Yi Ti: Raids past the Saffron Straits *3 of 3*
   by Shella Longclaw
               “I look back at this voyage with both wonder and regret,” quote from Prince Choq Nen. Having plundered the Jade Sea and Summer Sea, the twenty-one-year-old Pirate Prince decided to journey for new riches further east. He sets sail for the first time on his dragon skin vessel commonly called the Tanned Boat. He figured that he needed the fire resisted vessel to survive the perils of traveling through the Saffron Straits.
               Like Tarth the Sapphire Isle, the Saffron Straits aren’t named this for either growing saffron nor for a saffron trade route. It’s called this for the native large, saffron colored crabs which are the size of elephants. The deadly creatures are known to feast on men from time to time. Though, the crabs didn’t devastate the people of Ulos. According to Yi Tish records, the kingdom of Asshai had conquered the small islanders and brought every last one of them over to their kingdom as slaves. Though, it wasn’t Asshai that concerned the Pirate Prince. “My men and I keep one eye open for tiger-men’s ships prowling hungrily the strait.”
               After the defeat of the Bloodstone Emperor, his allies, the tiger-men relocated to the lands of Ulthos. That is one place, which would be amazing to explore, though first meeting the powerful tiger-men must be done carefully. Scribe Ayo Ve wrote that the Pirate Prince and his crew were fortunate to not run into any of them as the pirates traveled through and back in Saffron Straits.
               The description of the land, the people and animals of these lands will not be supported nor discredited by me. To the kingdom east of the tiger-men are called the Kay-eri, who are known for their mushroom hats and friendly nature. They ride foxes, as they herd their cattle. The pirates looted nothing there, but they traded seeds for moonstones.
              Past what we now called the Shadowlands, the pirates spotted a serpopard devouring a blue crow by the shore. They raid merfolks on the edge of land before endless sea. They gained blue and green pearls, and red and orange coral, and hooped snakeskin. The loot is currently held in the palace of Yin. The Pirate Prince and his men venture into the unknown sea for five days. They had decided that if nothing is seen, they will sail back.
            On the fourth day, three islands appeared on the horizon. “It appears men that pirates have already claim this spot, though they claimed it poorly.” A ship was observed on one of the island’s shore raiding. The islanders were winning the battle against the invaders. Since the islanders were allied with the merfolk, Nen joined the fight and supported the unknown pirates. Despite the language problems between the two pirates, they were victorious against the islanders. The loot was split fairly between the two invaders’ sides. This is where things start sounding familiar.
          The unknown pirates claimed to hail from isles further east. They picked all the iron ore and left the platinum for the Yi Tish. Nen called them Iron Pirates because they seemed to cherish iron. They had slaves rolling below the deck of their ship. The two groups shared a meal together in peace. It was then that sailor Koi gutted a poisonous kumi lizard and showed an Iron Pirate’s daughter how to do it. He fancied this woman Lady Salt and asked for her hand in marriage. Koi gave an old pirate a dragon bone hilt Valyrian steel dagger for her. The old evil pirate used the dagger to stab Koi in the back. A fight erupted between the Yi Tish pirates and the Iron Pirates.
         Thankfully, another band of pirates with grey leather skin and two large fangs attacked the Iron Pirates, and Nen and his men were able to escape. Though I don’t doubt the account, I do believe there is more to the story. The interpreter had been a failed scribe who admitted in his journal that he couldn’t completely comprehend the strangers. He didn’t know if the young man and young woman’s name was Rock and Salt, or if they were simply comparing them to salt and rock. I believe these strangers are actually the Ironborn. If this is true, it would give a reason for the sudden attack.
          A Yi Tish man commonly gives a dowry for a lady, while in Westeros, a father of the lady gives a prospective husband a dowry. Koi’s polite gesture might have been view as an insult by the Ironborn who believed he sought to buy the young woman as a slave. Sadly, both Koi and the young woman perished in the conflict, and the dagger was taken by an Ironborn. I can’t be certain of this, so I ask if a maester might inquire of the Ironborn about this event to confirm it or deny it. I am curious about what happened to the dagger as well.
          In any regard, this was the last voyage of Prince Choq Nen. “Koi was my brother, and the crew has always been my family if only I had been blessed not to be a prince. I must retire my post because I can’t bear to lose any more of you, and a good captain is fearless.” He gave up his ship and position as captain to one of his men. He married a deceased sailor’s widow and lived on one island of the Manticore Isles. It’s rumored to this day that his home became a haven for Yi Tish pirates.
          His legacy has captured the hearts of young Yi Tish sailors. Over thousands of years, many pirates would hold titles such the “Master of Currents” (a title which Nen referred to himself) and Indigo Pirates in honor of him. As for his astonishing ship the Tanned Boat, its fate is uncertain. Some scholars claimed that it was destroyed in a battle against another pirate, while some scribes believed that a second dragon skin ship had been destroyed, and Prince Choq Nen’s descendants kept the vessel. No one knows.

whats your opinion on the cursed heart
It was better than I expected tbh. Not amazing by any means, but not awful either. Despite having the ugliest LI they’ve ever drawn and MC being a literal idiot, it still held my attention because the side characters really made the story. Sir Montgomery and Longclaw were both so sweet. And Leaf was a gem all on her own. I’m also a sucker for good outfits, and I actually ended up buying like 4 or 5 of them in this book. Plus the background art was gorgeous.
Other than what I already mentioned, the downsides were that they blatantly copied some things from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, defeating the villain was super anticlimactic, Kieran isn’t particularly likable for a lot of the book (although he did grow on me a little), and the romance really wasn’t anything to write home about. I’m just glad that the smut/those weird, violent options in the sex scenes were all pretty much avoidable. Otherwise the book would’ve been a lot more unenjoyable. But the ending actually piqued my interest. So overall, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in book 2

My thoughts on Sonic 2
YOOOOOOOOOO I just got out of my first viewing of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (cuz we got it early in Germany) and I wanted to share my thoughts fresh of the press and piping hot.
(Don’t worry, I put all the spoilers below the thingie.)
One thing I can say without spoiling anything: I laughed when I saw the three posters in the theater. (translation as follows)
Knuckles: 2 times as strong
Sonic: 2 times as fast
Tails: 2 times as fluffy
Also, there is no second post credit scene. But the movie was such a blast that you’ll probably sit through them anyway just in sheer awe of what you have just witnessed.
- Nice how they made a new Paramount ring logo rather than just reusing the one from the first film
- Clever way of showing Eggman’s ingenuity with his Rube Goldberg utilities and traps.
- Applause for that Shiitake joke.
- How much you wanna bet that those obvious humans in silly suits, who are apparently pals of Knuckles, will receive zero context or explanation? *TWO HOURS LATER* Yep, just as I thought.
- They actually referenced Da Wae, Jeff Fowler you madlad
- More scenes of Sonic’s room are always a good thing
- More Sanic and fart jokes *insert George Takei Oh my here*
- Times they could have used the drowning music but didn’t #1
- So Longclaw really did die... that’s sad.
- Nice reworking of an innocuous detail from the first film into a plot point
- UPTOWN FUNK LET’S GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!11111111
- Sonic made the dance scene good, great and awesome, and then Tails made it outstanding and amazing.
- One of the very few criticisms I have with this movie is the beginning feeling a tad rushed. Like, it would have been nice to see a flashback to Tails being bullied and feeling like a lonely freak rather than just having him tell us this. I suppose the comic tie in is supposed to fill in the gaps, but it’s most likely not going to be released here.
- Also, Tails canonically watches Sonic as he bathes.
- I’ll say it now, the cabin scene is my favourite in the entire movie.
- “Kids, there’s nothing more cool then being hugged by someone you like. But if someone tries to touch you in a place or in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, that’s no good.”
- With just one word, heck not even really a word, Knuckles manages to make Jim Carrey Eggman look like a bore by comparison.
- Knuckles’ father here was a better dad in one scene than Locke was throughout Penders’ entire run.
- Sonic has the most Gen Z energy I’ve ever seen.
- GUN are total shits.
- Tails wins by doing absolutely nothing.
- Didn’t this film have a hedgehog in it? I could have sworn- oh there he is.
- Sonic is Jesus now.
- Times they could have used the tunes of concentrated anxiety but didn’t #2
- For a movie called Sonic Vs Knuckles in Japan there wasn’t as much bad blood between them as I thought.
- Times they could have made Honest Trailers’ prediction come true but didn’t #3
- Sonknux shippers are going to meem this scene to heck I just know it.
- Knuckles yeets himself into oblivion.
- Stone continues to be a simp.
- Nice trick with the missile Sonic.
- ♫ Sonic Heroes! Sonic Heroes! ♫
- The return of the dance off! YAAASSSSSS!!!!
- If I had a euro for every time Robotnik has turned himself into a god and Knuckles was the one who took that power away from him I’d have three euro. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened thrice.
- OMG, the Chaos Emeralds are so TINY!
- Wait are they actually... Yo, Super Sonic looks incredible!
- As a huge Sonic the Comic fangirl, that bait and switch they pulled was one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever seen.
- “You finally had all seven Chaos Emeralds together, and you threw them away?!” “Exactly!” “Eh, that’s fair.”
- I take back what I said before, I'm having a hard time if I like this scene or the cabin scene more.
- SONIC CALLED TOM DAD I CANT EVEN
- Nice callback to the baseball scene from the first movie. Great to see how much this boy has grown.
- Idris Elba wasn’t lying when he said the Knuckles ice cream scene was great.
- This movie in general has some of the funniest lines I’ve ever seen.
- I love the updated classic sonic sprite with the blue arms. It looks so good.
- Shadow being the one to be featured in the post credit scene didn’t surprise me. I’d already been spoiled on the fact that another Sonic charecter was featured in it, and he, Amy and Metal Sonic were the only candidates I could think of.
- Doesn’t this raise some plot holes with the events of the first movie? Because Commander Walters says he knows about Project Shadow, yet he had no clue what was going on when Sonic caused that EMP with his chaos energy.
- Shadow looks really cool though.
- I’m wondering how the 16 bit credits in the third movie are going to work, because unlike Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, he doesn’t have a classic form and his design is a bit too complex for that.
- Wondering how they’ll adapt his mess of a backstory.
- Also, it’s so obvious that he wasn’t given any lines so that could leave it a surprise as to who will voice him.
So in summary: I’ve found my new favourite movie.

MILD SPOILERS FOR SONIC 2
Mindless babbling about Movie Tails
I've read the Reddit leaks and one of the bits of info that got my attention was Tails being raised by Longclaw and that the reason he is the one looking for Sonic is because she is too old and frail. Now I'm just thinking how Tails' relationship was with Longclaw. After losing Sonic (and possibly thinking he's dead), was she super overprotective of Tails or was she like Shifu from the first Kung-fu Panda movie after Tai-lung's descent to darkness, where she holds Tails at arms length and often reminisces of Sonic, regretting not being stronger enough to protect the hedgehog. Imagine Tails using his intelligence to build amazing creations and presents them to Longclaw, hoping to make her happy but she just focuses on the negative (criticizing the invention) and never says anything positive.
What if the gadget that Tails had to trace Sonic after coming to Earth was something he built as a last resort to get on Longclaw's better graces.
'She misses Sonic, so why don't I try to see if I can find him and give her a peace of mind.'
Once he finds Sonic's signal and sees he's alive, he tells Longclaw, whose eyes for the very first time brightened. Tails volunteers to go find Sonic as Longclaw is too old and frail and makes it his mission to reunite the hedgehog with her.
So what happens after his mission is accomplished? Sonic and Longclaw reunite and have a heartfelt reunion and Tails stands to the side watching the scene.
He's happy for both Sonic and Longclaw. The hedgehog was back and their family was whole again.
And yet, Tails' heart can't help but give a painful tug seeing the two together. Why didn't Longclaw ever treat him like that? Where was the warmth and love she now had for Sonic?
Was he just a tool? A temporary replacement for the real deal?
Did Longclaw ever hold a shred of affection towards him?
Sonic reminisces of his younger days, him and Longclaw both laughing and smiling at the bright memories.
Ah.
When Sonic was around, it was a time of happiness and peace. When Longclaw took Tails in, it was after losing Sonic: a time of grief and depression.
Tails was a representative of that dark period of Longclaw's life. It makes sense on why she never could love him like Sonic.
There's a strained smile on Tails' lips, twitching between happy and sad. He knew what he had to do.
He looks back at Sonic and Longclaw one last time before bidding them a silent goodbye.
Mission accomplished.
--
In the middle of laughing, Sonic looks up and notices Tails isn't around.
"Tails?" He calls out.
He was so engrossed with his reminiscing that he didn't even see Tails leaving.
Longclaw looks up as well, looking around for the orange fox.
"Where's Miles?"
Sonic shrugs. "I swore he was right with us. Little guy's pretty quiet at leaving huh?" He jokes lightly.
A small bit of worry appears in the pit of Longclaw's stomach.
No, please not again. Not another.
Sonic is oblivious to Longclaw's worry, still confused on Tails' disappearance.
"Where did he go?"

sonic movie 2 spoilers under the cut i have A LOT to say holy shit
HOLY SHIT THIS MOVIE IS BETTER THAN THE FIRST I LOVED IT
theres so much i want to say but i have NO IDEA how to start or how to end
first and foremost they did knuckles SO MUCH JUSTICE sega wishes they could write as well as whoever the hell made this script. hes no longer the comic relief dumbass, hes a warrior!! like he used to be!! and he has dignity and honour!! and hes a little gullible but its okay, thats how he originally was anyway x
AND TAILS!! his camaraderie with sonic was so great. i loved how he came all the way to help him from whatever planet hes from and how they just bonded so well immediately and theyre already like brothers I LOVE IT
particularly i liked the scene on the beach where sonic and knuckles stopped and breathed for a sec after having lost the master emerald to robotnik and bonded over what happened to them both the day longclaw died. i liked how they related it back as knuckles’s family was fighting against her and UGH it was so sad but it was so great
AND THE REFS! they never cease to amaze me. i counted a dr robotniks mean bean machine ref (which is funny because ive been thinking about booting up my ps2 again to play it, i want to get good at puyo puyo), a sonic adventure reference during the dance off in siberia, AND ALL THE SONIC 3 AND KNUCKLES REFS!! jesus christ. theres probably more, but theyre slipping my mind
post sleep edit, remembered the manuel in the death egg looking like a manuel for a sega genesis game, that got a chuckle out of me iirc LOL
also kinda feel bad for rachel and what happened in her wedding. poor girl got set up and for what😭 a sting operation? its positively TRAGIC
ALSO THE WAY THEY ALL CAME TOGETHER AT THE END LIKE IT WAS SONIC HEROES I LOVED THAT!!!! I CAN TELL THEYRE GOING TO BE BESTIES JUST BY THE END SCENE WHERE THEYRE PLAYING BASEBALL I LOVE IT I LOVE IT
AND HOLY SHIT MY JAW DROPPED THE MOMENT I KNEW SUPER SONIC WAS GONNA SHOW UP OH MY GOD i shouldve seen it coming with the inclusion of the master emerald and the chaos emeralds and everything BUT OH MY GOD???? HE WAS SO STUNNING!!!! HE LOOKED ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS IN THE MOVIE I WAS IN AWE
AND THE ENDDDD OH MY GOD THE POST CREDITS SCENE WITH SHADOW!!!! I HAD A FEELING HE WAS GOING TO SHOW UP BUT I SCREAMED WHEN THEY SHOWED HIM I CANT WAIT FOR THE THIRD MOVIE!!!!! I BET THERES GONNA BE THIS WHOLE THING WITH GERALD ROBOTNIK, MARIA, THE INCIDENT WITH GUN STORMING THE SPACE COLONY ARK, I CANT WAIT!!!!!!
i did have a few gripes though. theyre a bit miniscule though
first of all, fuck whoever decided robotnik should floss. fuck you for that
second, did not enjoy how small the emeralds were. i know its probably so they can make sense in a human filled world but the emeralds were literally the size of my finger. and the master emerald was the size of ONE in game chaos emerald
also was a bit weirded out by agent stone drawing robotnik in his lattes but ummm hes gay so its fine idk the fujoshis will have a field day with that
alsooo kind of sad there wasnt anything with crazy carl drawing tails gets trolled or uganda knuckles. that wouldve been funny i think
ANYWAY GO WATCH THE MOVIE GO WATCH IT NOW IM GONNA PISS MYSELF I LOVED IT
ps whoever runs this show please bring in crush 40 to write the ending song of the next movie im tired of this kid cudi guy

HELLO, YES, I HAD AN IDEA FOR A CONCEPT AND HAD TO SHARE IT WITH YOU, INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE BUT WITH THE BLUE DEVILS, LET ME EXPLAIN
(disclaimer I haven't watched Spider-Verse in a while)
(other disclaimer this will contain many many spoilers for Into The Spider-Verse so go watch it it's amazing)
Wachowski takes the place of Miles, which makes sense. Sonic has more specialized powers than the other blue devils (see unlimited power, time freezing, lightning), like Miles, and they both have cop dads who are literally amazing (I mean, look at the "that's a copy" scene and tell me it doesn't radiate Tom and Sonic energy).
Boom takes the place of Peter B purely because both of them radiate exhausted "I am completely done with this bullshit" energy
Modern and Classic I'm not completely sure. Classic radiates feral energy based on what I'm seeing from your characterization (I literally just joined this fandom because of the movie, I don't know a lot about the games, sue me), so maybe Porker or Penny would work for him (or maybe some combination of the two, they all radiate sort of unhinged feral energy). Modern taking the place of the original Peter would work because they both have extremely cocky energy (I don't know if you can tell I'm assigning who's who based on energy), but then again, the original Peter dies, so... Fuck.
There is the possibility of different versions of Tails and Knuckles or the Prickle Posse taking the place of some of the characters, so that's something fixed. But then again... Several Sonics being chaotic...
There are characters who I honestly... don't know. Aaron, for example. Do I have Rachel take his place, since she's Maddie's sister and therefore Wachowski's aunt? What about the other villains? Aunt May? Spiderman Noir? And Gwen is a WHOLE other can of worms, so I'm just not gonna get into her because shipping is a big can of worms
So basically the plot goes the same. This is a society where humans and Mobians coexist, Tom and Maddie adopted Sonic when he was a kid shortly after Longclaw's death (which had nothing to do with echidna this time), Wachowski either gets bit by a radioactive bug or he gets exposed to a Chaos Emerald, that gives him super speed, other shenaniganery, loads of Sonics, time limit to most of them dying, you get the picture. This is just a rough draft of a plot, so if you have any improvements, please tell me.
👀 this is almost beat for beat what I had in mind when thinking about this very crossover
As for what I had:
Classic was Porker, Amy was Gwen, Cream and Cheese were Penni and her robot, and Spider Noir was a version of Shadow
Aaron was actually Longclaw in this case? I didn’t have any details but the claws and stuff kinda matched
Tails and/or Knuckles took the place of Aunt May
And that’s about it :P

Just got back seeing Sonic Movie 2. And my head is buzzing!
I will start off by saying it's a good movie. Not great, but a fun time. Certainly it ups things a lot more than the first one, however there are times the silliness could've been toned down so we got a more grounded narrative (like the first one was).
Overall I will say I enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect. I do have hopes that Sonic Movie 3 will be a bit better and more mature than 1 and 2
MORE THOUGHTS UNDER THE CUT
Positives
1. Dang I thought Sonic looked good in the first movie, but this one cranked up the CGI on the animal characters even more! Sonic looks so good in this. As well as Tails and Knuckles.
2. The addition that Sonic seems to be more intune with his powers and gaining more confidence in ways to use them.
3. Knuckles 👊
4. Coleen is amazing as Tails!
5. Speaking of Tails. He's cute and unafraid to get to get into battle once he has someone to believe in him 🦊
6. The chemistry between Sonic, Tom and Maddie was sweet and sucked me in at points.
7. TEAM SONIC FIGHTING TOGETHER 💙💛❤ (no seriously I nearly hyperventilated I was so excited)
8. Death Egg Robot
9. Super Sonic
10. Knuckles taking on role of second big bro to Tails 💖
11. Idris Elba as Knuckles killed it.
12. Sonic being so concerned over Tails and begging the humans to give him medical attention rather than be angry about being in a cage.
Negatives
1. The movie got too silly in places. Almost embarrassing levels of childish. Some stuff they could've cut out.
2. Eggman was really not seen as much as I wanted. Less menacing, and more Looney Tunes silly.
3. Tails was rushed. Whilst he does follow the backstory that he was weirded out in his village because of his tails, I feel they could've gone more in depth. Like have him mention the relentless bullying he endured and how much of an outcast really effected him. It makes sense that Tails would get really engrossed in his gadgets, but it needed more fleshing out.
4. WTF was the hologram thing of Longclaw on Sonic's map?! It was never mentioned in the first movie and yet all of a sudden about a year after the first movie Sonic discovers it? Really need to know what that was cause it came out of nowhere.
5. Makes sense that Longclaw and her tribe would hide the Master Emerald on Earth (which explains how Longclaw knew about it to send Sonic there) but what does this mean for Angel Island? It's a pivotal location in the games and Knuckles even mentions his tribe were all about creating and protecting the ME. Yet Angel Island is never uttered. I'm concerned cause now the ME is just in the Wachowski household in a freezer case like an easy access battery.
6. Is it me or is Sonic bigger in this movie? Like he's small but in the first one he was small alien kind of size, but now in 2 he looks bigger against the humans like he did in Sonic 06.
7. OK the big one. I know people will be upset with me for this, but I'm already tired of the humans. The best parts of the movie were Sonic, Knuckles and Tails. And whilst I appreciate GUN being involved, every time the movie had to cut back to the humans it felt like it disrupted the flow, when there could've been more time for Team Sonic to have more development scenes or just have more moments where they talked and built more of a rapport with each other.
While the humans are certainly charming and have good character, it feels at this point they want to shoehorn them in so they can justify the "live action" part.
I'm torn on Sonic calling Tom "Dad". First of all, I guess Maddie is ignored as his mother. Or he still feels Longclaw was more a mother? I don't know. I just wish it was left to interpretation and less forceful. It's hard to explain.

Movie!Sonamy - A quick little thing
Tumblr media
(Found here x Not mine!)
Scene 1:
As Amy reaches out, moving across the pavement of the deserted back-way road, Robotnik--who at the time is still on the mushroom planet controlling Metal Sonic remotely in a makeshift base he created from the portals he created to function like Sonic’s rings to get random objects to fall into the mushroom world--commands Metal Sonic, “Another one!? Just rotten luck... unless??? Metal! Seize the girl! I want her alive!”
Intrigued at the idea that the girl may have a similar power source as Sonic, he watches as Metal Sonic charges and grabs her before a weakened Sonic from fighting the new foe could take her hand.
“Noo...” He stumble back down as Amy is swooped up, crying out for him.
Robotnik’s drone with a screen of him on it flies over to where Metal Sonic hovers in the air, as Amy squirms to try and break free of it.
“Hey! Let me go, you big bully!” She summons a hammer to hit him, whacking him as Robotnik smirks.
“Metal, be sure to keep our little captive secure.” Then looks back to Sonic as though a warning.
Sonic stumbles to his feet again, holding his hurt arm that Metal slashed into and rolled him off his high-speed escape.
“Leave her alone, Eggman...” He wobbles slightly, squinting an eye.
“Sonic, I’m about to get very unlady-like. Please look away!” Amy continues to struggle, but upon Robotnik’s last command, Metal Sonic locks his arms and she’s perfectly stuck in the wedge therein. “Grr! Hurfh!” she stops with her hammer hits as it doesn’t seem to be doing anything but create nose and knock his head back slightly. “Okay, in 3.., advert your eyes! 2... oooonnneeee...” she holds the last count as she continues to kick her feet and try and ‘squirm’ through the cobra-like grip.
She finally flops her arms down along with her head, dangling before seeing Sonic still staring. Gasping, she continues to try and look like she’s making progress, “I thought I said look away!!! I can’t really let him have it if your watching me!” but it’s clear she’s fibbing.
Sonic worriedly looked between her and Eggman, then glares at Metal Sonic. “It’s me you want... let the girl go!”
She stops struggling, amazed that he’s being so heroic. “Sonic...” A moment ago, when he first met her, he seemed frozen time and excited raced over to greet her with a simple ‘hi’ and raised hand. But when she tried to get ‘closer’ to him through their time together, he seemed to almost try and get away from her...
So now... He seemed like he really did care.
Robotnik laughed, “Let’s first see if you can catch her...” The drone parted and shot out a portal beam that was heading back at light-speeds... then Metal Sonic blasted his jets and flew after it.
Robotnik wanted to test out his Metal creation, having used Sonic’s quill to construct him, mostly.
Sonic took off after them, pushing himself even though he was clearly beat up.
“Noo!!” Amy watched as Metal swung her to the side and fired at a pursuing Sonic. “You leave him alone!!!” She summoned her hammer again, but this time, Robotnik noticed something...
“Hmm... interesting.” he fired a laser to knock the hammer out of her hands, but she summoned it right back as it was flying away and shot it at him.
His drone blasted it out from it’s path towards knocking into it, and flew a little closer to her. Robotnik’s smirk tripled in size... (Grinch stole Christmas reference.) “How very... useful information to know. Metal! Come home!” his drone shot out towards the portal, but Sonic quickly bypassed Metal, surprising both of them, and then rolled up into an electric blue ball.
“Like I’d let you get away!” he charged into him and shred through the drone, exploding it with his electric energy before throwing an electric beam to Metal Sonic (Sonic boom reference) and yanking him out of the air.
Metal missed the portal, getting pulled back as Amy swung one last hammer hit to knock him further to the ground while she still flew off at an angle.
“Amy!” he raced to her and grabbed her, tumbling into the forest as the portal warbled and finally dissipated. (The chase is meant to resemble Sonic CD’s Metal Sonic race.)
“NOOO!!!” Robotnik slammed his fists on his makeshift console as sparks flew all around it. He breathed hard... before a light came on and he rolled his enraged eyes up to it...
Metal Sonic... was still operational. He sneered, typing in some commands. “No matter... I’m not out of this game yet..!” he growled in competitive spite.
Amy’s eyes were a bit dizzy-struck, but Sonic moved off of her, shaking his head and breathing hard. “You... You alright, Rascal?”
She puffed out some air, then her eyes closed and let her head fall to her side.
“Amy..?” He suddenly looked her face over. “Amy!” his blue quills sparked with light as his eyes changed color as well, showing the electricity.
She suddenly began giggling, and he pouted at realizing he was being fooled.
“Don’t you know..? This is when you kiss the girl awake!” she teased.
He rolled his eyes and lightly moved her face back to being against the dirt, using her to push off the ground and get up in a comedical way. “If I did that, I’d have to call out ‘clear’!” he was referring to his power and imagining her popping with electrical emergency like in hospitals.
However, Metal Sonic had turned his head and scanned their heart rates during that moment... there was a link between their heart rate increases, and Robotnik twisted one of the hairs on his overgrown mustache at it.
“All the readings and signs point to a very peculiar circumstance caused by teen acquaintance in the most obscure and annoying frequencies in young creatures... Maybe I can lure him to me yet.” He built up his villainous laughter as the mushroom base he created was shown in it’s full glory with drones flying everywhere around it like a bee-hive.
Scene 2:
Exhausted from out-running Eggman, the gang of Tails, Sonic, Amy, Tom, and Maddie were around a campfire by their camper they ‘acquired’ during their attempt to escape Eggman’s robots.
As Tom was speaking, Amy was growing more and more tired, her eyes drooping before finally it was clear she was practically asleep, and her head bobbed a certain direction as though she was about to fall over.
Seeing this, Sonic scooted over to her just as her head was about to topple over from it’s many deeper bows, and was caught softly by his shoulder.
Maddie, seeing this, cut off Tom by moving her arm out of her blanket and putting a hand on his shoulder, “I think we all just need a breather first, Tom. Then we can talk about staging inter-world battles.” She joked, but was slightly serious as Tom looked to see Tails yawning and rubbing his hurt side and head, as Sonic also looked over to him and patted his tail that was by him, as Tails smiled appreciatively over to him.
“Maybe we should all get some sleep...”
“Look at you, being so responsible..!” proud of her boy, Maddie got up and wiggled her head, striding over to help pick up Amy and take her back to the camper. “Looks like you took my advice.”
“Being nice... isn’t so hard when everyone needs you to save the world... again.” Sonic replied in his usual snark, but then looked sorrowfully back to Amy. “If Eggman learns about Tails... will he get put in danger too?”
“Well...” Maddie looked down, “People put themselves in danger... for the things they love the most.” She looked over to Sonic, eye to eye, before Tails and Amy. “These guys risked everything to escape and find you, right? That must mean they truly loved Longclaw... and believed that you would be the one to help free them.” She bobbed and patted Amy as though instinctively being motherly while she spoke, and Sonic just smiled, nodding to her.
However... when she turned away, whispering goodnight, he frowned and his ears fell back.
He didn’t want to be a hero, the responsibility of looking out for these two also didn’t make him feel like he was enough. He worried about Tom and Maddie too... he didn’t want anyone else getting hurt or put in danger...
Maddie placed Amy down and removed her blanket from around her shoulders, replacing it to be on Amy as she rested.
She dropped the blinds and smiled at the window above her, then stroked and curled her fingers around her bangs before setting off....
When red glowed from the window...
Metal Sonic had carefully camouflaged himself behind some bushes in the forest they were hiding in, and moved over to the camper.
Seeing her, he scanned her, but didn’t see any trace of a similar power to Sonic’s. Even so, he had his orders, and carefully used a heated beam to create a square out of the bunker, grabbing it before it could fall over and on her.
He carefully moved the square piece and maneuvered his dangerously spiked claws under her head and body, lifting her to then sneak away as his operation was complete.
However... Tails looked at his device, “Strange...” he rubbed his eyes awake, “Why is that... Sonic, look out!” he dived into Sonic as Metal shot a beam into the camper, exploding it like rapidly fired, circular bombs.
“Oh my-” Maddie stumbled up and ran towards the flames, but Sonic saw something red, like a stream of moving eyes, dip into the forest.
He glared, and ran after it, not looking back as Tom reached out to him. “Sonic!”
Scene 3:
Trapped in Eggman’s containment unit, not able to fully stand up and not big enough to lay down comfortably in, Amy hit the sides of the clear wall, trying to convince Eggman to let her go.
“Is that what you’re all gonna call me!?” Robotnik’s nose flared at the name.
“You smell like rotten eggs too!” she summoned her hammer and slammed it against the wall.
“Ah! Fascinating.” he bent down to look at the hammer. “Metal? Calm down our experiment.”
Metal, using the quill from Sonic, created a blue electricity that sparked on his raised hands and traveled along his metallic claws...
Amy recongized the power, amazed he had it, and scooted back Robotnik stood up, his glasses flaring with light when Metal seemingly off-camera shocked the unit.
Amy’s cry of pain was quick, and Eggman opened the container to pull out the hammer, showing Amy’s limp body. “I said calm, Metal. We aren’t sure if we can extract her power dead or alive yet... But even so, good boy.” he patted his metallic head, but Metal’s face was emotionless.
His red, blaring eyes peered at the hedgehog girl who squirmed back up to look at him, “I’ll make sure... you regret... this...”
He seemed to have a red light blinking on the side of his eyes, as though recording before she dipped her head back down wearily, and he moved over to Eggman, tracing his movements.
Eggman placed the hammer on the same device he used to measure Sonic’s power, but scooted the two rims farther back to make room to place the hammer. The container swung up over it like a clamped shell, and Metal Sonic watched him, still with only his eyes and head following his movements, as he danced and waited for the results.
He air guitar’d before the results came back faster than he anticipated.
Rushing over, he laughed once again, wheezing at times, pounding his fat stomach as though choking when the results showed that the hammer had an unlimited power source as well. “There’s morrrrreeee!!!” he shot himself up out of his chair and shook his fists in the air.
Wickedly Elated.
Scene 4:
Metal Sonic had showed Sonic Amy’s recording, and faking that she was dead, caused Sonic to think Robotnik had killed her and burst into electricity, charging after him through the portal, exactly what Eggman wanted...
With Sonic enraged, he didn’t realize he was being deceived, but soon enough fights, gets captured, fights again, and finds Amy to save her while he escapes.
-skipping along the dvd in my head lol-
Sonic was carrying a now awake and perplexed Amy while trying to escape the mushroom kingdom.
He came alone to avoid further conflict with Tom and Maddie, who he felt were being over-protective and sheltering, when he just didn’t want them to get hurt.
Metal Sonic pursued, but Amy kept complaining he wasn’t holding her like a ‘lady’ and he swung her over his shoulder.
“Better~?” He teased, already remarking how it wasn’t comfortable to run while holding someone, and also the fact that she didn’t make it any easier by squirming.
The two kept trying to figure out what the best position was as Amy kept firing off her unlimited supply of Piko Piko Hammers while Metal Sonic gained on them constantly, due to Sonic’s poor footwork and trying to adjust Amy in his arms.
Finally, he threw her up to dodge Metal Sonic charging at them with his claw swiping out, and then jumped to spin dash him into his engine on the back, before grabbing Amy bridal style.
As they raced away, Amy looked all around at her new position, and nodded approvingly, “This... This will do.” she wrapped her arms lovingly around him and gave him a sweet, adoring smile before looking back over his shoulder... and then bending her eyes in a regret-stricken arch at what she knew Eggman now had...
Scene 5: -Around the end-
Amy has her feet on a stalled and twitching right engine wheel on Metal Sonic, on his knees, head up as she had looped her hammer around and jammed it behind his neck/quills.
she held his sparking head and glared into his eyes, as Metal Sonic’s red dot blinked in the corner of his eye, revealing the same hologram he had showed to anger Sonic and have him react emotionally to try and extract his power.  “I’ll make sure... you regret... this...”
Amy smiled, knowing he was recognizing that this was her fulfilling her own promise. Not through Sonic...
“You will never be as great as Sonic The Hedgehog...” Amy then rips his head clean off, but as he explodes, his head remains intact and flies off,... he was still recording her...
Forever on his memory now... (concludes Metal Sonic’s hinted jealous rivalry to be better than Sonic, seeing as Robotnik acted about Sonic, and wanted to be more than enough to please his creator... the ultimate Sonic.)
Sonic dives into the flames after her, a slow-motion of him worriedly reaching out as the flames of his exploded body envelop them.
They roll to the side, but Tails, Maddie, Knuckles, and Tom don’t see it. (They will later over hear them and that’s when Sonic will stride in like a hero, touched by their tears and loving speeches)
“We gotta... stop meeting like this.” Amy teased, breathing hard as he got up off of her, mimicking the tumble in Scene 1. “People like to talk.”
For once... he smiles at her charm.
“Well, you said so yourself... There’s only one hedgehog that’s your hero...” He bends down, and as she gets excited and closes her eyes, leaning up to kiss, he moves off of her.
She blinks her eyes and gasps, moving up to see him just walking off.
“Sonic!”
“What? Aren’t you waiting for him to scoop you up and carry you away?” He teased back, gesturing behind himself.
She shakes her head, “I think you know who my destined hero is.”
His eyebrows move up and he smiles. (This establishes their dynamic from here on out. Hero and admirer.)
-I got wind of a rumor about Amy being in the new sequel... I already made 2 scenarios of how she could be played, this is how Sonic could play back xD-

Please tell me your thoughts on everything, I must know from you, the all-knowing mastermind.
Okay, so, first of all, sorry for the delay, because these past weeks have been crazy! Now that I'm able to just sit down and rethink on the latest news and rumors on the new game and everything else, I'll be giving you my general thoughts on that glorious day of teasers! Trust me, I was malfunctioning that night after watching the movie trailer, since my mind went 'Knuckles! Knuckles! Knuckles!' until like, 3 AM.
Let's get to the movie first. It's not a surprise how much I loved the references to Sonic Adventure and other few game bits that were gently sprinkled here and there. Despite my excitement over them, I honestly believe (and hope) the film will focus on its own story, instead of simply remaking some of the games in a 'medley' way. So far, we can guess the lore when it comes to Knuckles' Clan and the Master Emerald itself might be a little different from the canon, since we also have the whole owl ordeal in the ancient ruins and the involvement of Longclaw in this. Apparently, the echidnas were after Sonic's powers when he was a baby - but what if Longclaw was also important, given the details we saw in the traps Dr. Robotnik was avoiding? Could she be alive?
With that being said, I'm very curious to see Sonic and Tails' dynamic in the movie! It seems to be a fun one in the trailer, and I'm expecting some sibling bonding to happen as well. About the man of the hour, I can't say much or else I'll just go back into fangirling. Knuckles is the one I'm most excited to see in action! He's going to be taken seriously and that's what I'm here for, especially after reading that Idris Elba indeed took a liking and interest for his character to the point of caring to study his motivations. I can't wait for this film, which will be released just two days before my birthday! It's going to feel like an anticipated gift, that's for sure. Now let's get to the game!
I was exhilarated upon finding out the rumor about Sonic Frontiers being an open world game was indeed true. It's an old dream of mine, one I could only fulfill with that 'Sonic Adventure 3' mock-up game I had imagined and planned from start to finish, which was supposed to be an open world one too. I'm quite interested in the locations, which look beautiful so far, gameplay, characters and of course, new lore content! I have a few theories on it already (i.e. Infinite's return...), though I'd rather keep the details to myself for now. Knowing that Ian Flynn is writing this game was amazing as well, though I personally wish he doesn't keep things too simple and safe. If he's going to write Sonic rescuing his friends, I expect him to explore his dynamic with them individually, whether through cutscenes, idle in-game talk or maybe side quests.
Overall, Sonic Frontiers is my most anticipated game thus far. My hopes are mild when it comes to the plot itself, but whatever it is and how it's executed, it won't matter that much to me because well, it's an open world game! I can't wait to do absolutely nothing related to the priority missions and just, roam about the flower fields and other gorgeous scenery. Hopefully they have a fire/lava location included in one of those islands, because you know how much this sort of environment is my usual favorite in Sonic games!

Sonic's Dream
"Dreams are mysterious. They can be good or they can be bad. Sonic enjoys good dreams, whether their about running, chili dogs or his family. ...But he despises bad dreams. Sometimes their about deep waters, the dark... Or being alone all over again."
-
A gentle breeze sway through the air, clouds moving by slowly yet quickly. The sunflowers dance in the wind, aiming their lovely yellow petals at the sun.
The young hedgehog lays on the ground, sleeping soundly on his back. The soft howls from the wind barely made his ears twitch. He groaned, trying to stay asleep.
The grass beneath tickled him slightly, which made him jolt. His emerald eyes shot open and he gasped quietly. The first thing he sees is the blue sky and the fluffy clouds.
Sonic began to sit up straight, looking at his surroundings. An endless field of sunflowers sway before him. He was confused, but all questions washed away fast when the beauty of the scenery took his breath away.
His smile rose on his muzzle as his fur flows from the wind and he took a deep, long breath.
Inhale...
...Exhale.
He felt relaxed. Calm. Happy. There's just something about these flowers that made him feel some sort of nostalgia. It's beauty and colors means a lot to him.
He brushed his gloved hand through the flowers slowly. His smile grew each second his hand brushes through the flowers.
He was in love with it all.
He then got up on his feet and looked out to the far beyond behind him. Just an endless field. Nothing but sunflowers. Dancing in front of him. Even the wind sounds like singing almost.
He giggled. He was beginning to feel more awake. Energized. He needed to move. He needed to run.
And so he did.
He zoomed through the fields, feeling the air hit his face and quills. Despite his incredible speed, the flowers stayed in their place, even when Sonic kept dashing on. Not even a petal is flying by.
The hedgehog laughed as he kept running. God, what an amazing feeling. The feeling of being free with nothing to stop him. Even the flowers felt like they were running alongside him.
Not a single thought is making him stop. He kept running, and laughing, enjoying every second of his fantasy.
...Then, he gasped and stopped dead at his track.
His eyes grew large when a familiar sight met him.
He was having so much fun running through the flowers. He thought he would just keep running forever and ever. But...
He was wrong.
She stopped him.
"Longclaw...?" He whispered.
She wasn't facing him, but it was clear who this gigantic beautiful owl is. Her large brown feathers and and golden claws shine through the grass. It was all too obvious.
The hedgehog's heart began to race. He wanted to smile. He wanted to be so happy to see her again. But he was in shock. In disbelief. He knew she wasn't supposed to be here. Yet...
"It's you..." He finally spoke up as tears began to form. He tried his best to stay calm. "It's really you! I-I thought you were-...!" He stopped himself as he begins to choke up some more.
He really couldn't believe it.
After what had happen years ago. After the sacrifice she made. After all of that, she's still here. She came back.
"Longclaw!!" He cried out, hugging her tightly. Tears streamed down his cheeks as the feeling of her feathers against his fur broke him down some more. "I missed you so much, Longclaw! I... I can't believe you're really here! I- ... ..."
Suddenly, he had a gut feeling.
Not a good one either.
Sonic slowly looked up at the head of the owl who was still looking away from something. "...Longclaw?" He said, backing away from the bird. He grew concerned for her the longer the silence goes on.
She didn't speak to him.
She didn't even look at him.
Is she ignoring him? Is she mad about something? Is she... mad at him?
"Longclaw? Did-Did I do something wrong?" He stuttered, twisting his hands together, the feeling of nervousness haven't gone away.
She still didn't take a second to look at him.
Sonic is now desperate. If he doesn't get even a single response from her he might as well just forced her to turn her head. "Longclaw, please! Just say something! What's wrong?!" He cried.
Still. Nothing.
His lips trembled. He reunited with his owl guardians after many years and all she's doing is giving him the silent treatment for no reason.
Even the howling from the wind have became silent. The flowers held dead still. The only sound present was Sonic's breathing.
"...Was it something I did?"
At that moment, the majestic bird spread her wings open and flew off suddenly. The air pushed from the wings made Sonic fell onto the ground. He looked ahead to see Longclaw flying away into the distance.
Now he's panicking. She's leaving his sight again.
Before he can even get up, he noticed a sunflower to his right beginning to shrivel. It's colors were getting dull and it slowly dropped face forward to the ground.
Then it hit the ground, dropping dead right in front of the hedgehog.
It made his stomach churn watching it unfold. To make matters worse it wasn't the only flower wilting.
The flowers circling him were beginning to wither away. It horrified him. He looked back up at the sky to see Longclaw flying away. He quickly got back up on his feet. "No! Wait!!" He shrieked and reached his hand out to her before running off in a flash, chasing her down.
He was already out of breath, but he kept running, wanting so badly to catch up to his owl mother. He kept reaching out his hand to her, more tears escaping from his now fear filled eyes. "Longclaw! Wait! Don't go!!" He yelled out, hoping that she could hear him.
As he ran, the flowers he ran through began to wilt fast, leaving a trail, and soon a field, of dead flowers. "Don't leave me!! Don't leave me again!!" He sobbed, running faster each second, but the faster he ran, the further Longclaw goes.
The skies began to become covered by dark gray clouds, no sight of sunshine. Almost every flower in sight was gone. "LONGCLAW!" He continuously screamed her name out, but it was no use. "DON'T LEAVE ME ALONE AGAIN! PLEASE!"
Then, she faded away into the clouds.
It took him a moment to fully realize that Longclaw was gone for good once more. His running slowed down and he fell to his knees, crying and slamming his fists into the ground. "Longclaw...! Longclaaaaaaww...!" He whaled at the top of his lungs.
The garden of flowers perished as the skies darken. The hedgehog continued to cry, stuck with the feeling of solitude.
Dreadful, trapped solitude.
For one brief moment, he found the one person who took care of him since he was just a hoglet. But then, just like before, she disappeared.
He should've known that she wouldn't stay forever. He should've known that she wouldn't be alive. But he was just so happy. So happy to see his mother again.
Too blinded by the joy he felt to see the one figure who left the world because of him.
If he would've just kept his powers a secret from those things she would be still...
But... He didn't. Now she's gone because of him.
He was stuck with this regret for years and he hated it.
He hated that everything was his fault.
He kept on sobbing thought he knew darn well that the pain will never go away. This stupid feeling will never go away. He will always be alone.
And it was his fault.
-
"Sonic? Buddy?"
Letting out a sharp gasp, Sonic jolted upwards, pushing the blankets off of him. He was sweating bullets and was completely breathless.
Everything around him was dark. He couldn't tell where he is. Tom, who was the one who woke him up, held his arms carefully, not wanting to scare the already frightened hedgehog. "Hey, it's okay. It's okay, little dude."
Sonic's heard a familiar voice and turned his head quickly to see the Donut Lord. His friend. He can see his caring yet tired smile now. He noticed how that he was in his room, on his little racecar bed. He was still shaking and his cheeks were flushed. He couldn't calm down.
"Hey. Sonic. It's alright. I'm here." Tom's voice was sleepy and calm. "Just breathe, okay?"
The first few tries were shaky breaths, but he calm down eventually. Though, his heart was still pounding, and his eyes were tired and watery.
"You're alright, buddy." He reassured the young space hog, gently scratching one of his ears. "You're alright."
Sonic didn't look at the human. He stared at his socks, his mind stuck on the imagery of his dream. "I'm right here, little guy. Don't worry." Tom said.
"That stupid nightmare again..." He barked quietly, tears burning his eyes as he wrapped his arms around his legs and placed his head down. "What?" The sheriff said out loud.
It wasn't the only time he had that nightmare, and he's certain that it wouldn't be the last.
He sniffled and wiped the tears away as he looked up at his friend. "S-Sorry... I didn't mean to wake you up..."
"Hey. Don't worry about that. Besides, I was already awake before I heard you crying upstairs."
"Did... Did you have a nightmare too?"
"Nah. I just needed to go to the bathroom."
" ...Oh." Of course he's the only one who's restless.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Tom asked. "It's okay if you don't want to, but I just wanted you to know that I'm here."
Sonic looks up at Tom once more.
He's right. He's here.
Tom is right here.
He's not really alone at all.
Sonic smiled slightly. He chuckled. "I knew that."
Sonic reached up to Tom and hugged him. "Haha. Sure ya did, bud." He said hugging him back.
"I had that dream for a while. It... Bothered me. It made me feel... Alone. But I'm not. You and Maddie are here now. And... That's what matters now!"
Tom smiled as well. "Well I'm glad you're okay, Sonic."
They had their hug for a while before Sonic asked one more question before dozing off. "Would it be okay if... *YAAAAAAWWWN* If I sleep with... You and... Maddie...?"
Tom chuckled before picking Sonic up in his arms. He grabbed his blanket as well. "Of course, kid." He whispered. Then, with the tired hedgehog in his arms, he walked back downstairs to tuck him in.

ASOIAF - Food symbolism: apples and Jon “You have to choose.”
Inspired by this amazing post by @thoughtsandgrumbles I felt compelled to look at apples a little.
Apples are a deeply symbolic fruit on a good day, but I’m not going to go too deeply into the general use, because who has time for that? I’m looking at the text itself. This post will be all about apples in Jon’s chapters, once I get the preliminary rambles out of the way.
Warning: LONG. Many quotes.
Just a few things:
Popularly associated with temptation and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the garden of eden, the realization of being nekkid, the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise as a result. (That would botanically not have been an apple, though.)
The apple “to the fairest” handed out by Eris, godess of discord, for Paris to choose among the three godesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, ultimately leading to the Trojan War, which GRRM heavily draws from.
Snow White and the poison apple
Sansa is the name of a variety of apple that was developed in the 1970s, an early ripening mix of Gala and Akane.
Just by the general use, we get a theme of choice and destruction. Also Sansa is an apple. But - spoiler alert - that is NOT very central in Jon’s chapters. YET.
Also, some boring numbers, because this is not as easy a fruit as the persimmon to parse for the sheer amount of them:
Apples in general have 155 mentions in all searchable publications, 135 in the novels directly, 22 in Jon chapters. Only 9 of all the novel-mentions concern House Fossoway, 11 in the other literature.
Top chapter uses:
AFFC, Prologue - 14: Oldtown, Quill and Tankard inn backyard. Alleras shoots them with bow and arrow while the acolyte nerd squad discusses Dany and her dragon rumors. "Where's Rosey? Our rightful queen deserves another round of cider, wouldn't you say?" The apples are withered and wormy, the cider is fearsomely strong. Pate agonizes over his betrayal and theft for his creepy, obsessive love. His choice is “love”. Then he is killed. Complex.
ADWD, Jon V - 11: Jon passes out food and asks the wildlings at Mole’s Town to choose if they want to fight for the NW or not. Apples and onions, you have to choose. The apples are withered.
ADWD, Davos II - 7: Getting information about Manderly from an apple seller in White Harbor. Bad apple, good information. Theme in WH: who are you truly loyal to? The apple is dry and mealy, “bad”. Apples and onions, again.
ASOS, Bran III - 5, and ASOS, Jon V - 3: (8 combined) Rotten apples carpet the ground near an abandoned Queenscrown inn. They provide the background for Jon’s break with the Wildling Undercover Operation and flight back to the Watch. Theme: the abandonment of the Gift, the decline of the Watch, the Dream of Spring and Jon really doesn’t even really pretend to want a future with Ygritte. He chooses. The apples are rotten.
POV uses: Jon 22, Arya 18, Prologue AFFC 14, Sansa 13, Davos 8, Jaime 8, Bran 8, Tyrion 8, Brienne 6, Catelyn 6, Dany 5, Eddard 5, Cersei 3, Theon 3, Samwell 2 JonCon 1, Asha 1, Quentyn 1, Arianne 1, Areo Hotah 1, Prologue ADWD: 1.
Jon is not only the single top POV character to feature the apple, he also has two of the top-use chapters that give the apple significance in setting the background. The apple is very closely tied to Jon.
A short note on the  red apple Fossoways (Cider Hall) and the green apple Fossoways (New Barrel):
The branches split at the trial of seven at the Tourney at Ashford (of the Ashford Theory), where the red apple fought for the bad guys (Aerion Targaryen) and the green apple for Ser Duncan the Tall.
Both had the red apple of the Fossoways painted on their shields, but the younger man's was soon hacked and chipped to pieces. "Here's an apple that's not ripe yet," the older said as he slammed the other's helm. (…)
"Ser Raymun, if you please." He cantered up, a grim smile lighting his face beneath his plumed helm. "My pardons, ser. I needed to make a small change to my sigil, lest I be mistaken for my dishonorable cousin." He showed them all his shield. The polished golden field remained the same, and the Fossoway apple, but this apple was green instead of red. "I fear I am still not ripe . . . but better green than wormy, eh?"
(The Hedge Knight)
Again with the split of loyalty, with the following your moral code, with the choices.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So how do apples feature for Jon himself?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Apples are connected to Jon’s struggle of loyalty to the Night’s Watch, and with his inner struggle in general. Every time they show up, he is confronted with a choice of who to stay loyal to, what values to follow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First apple: AGOT, Jon IX.
Jon’s final chapter in the book. Big Drama!
Jon eats a brown, withered apple when he tries to flee the NW the first time. He is heading South because his father has been killed and he wants to join Robb. He is plagued by self-doubt and fear. Then he takes a break to eat.
In his saddlebag, he found a biscuit, a piece of cheese, and a small withered brown apple. (...) He kept the apple for last. It had gone a little soft, but the flesh was still tart and juicy. He was down to the core when he heard the sounds: horses, and from the north.
Straight after, he is caught and prodded back in an incredibly moving, nonviolent confrontation by his new Brothers reciting the NW vows.
"… and all the nights to come," finished Pyp. He reached over for Jon's reins. "So here are your choices. Kill me, or come back with me."
Jon lifted his sword … and lowered it, helpless. "Damn you," he said. "Damn you all."
In his mind, Jon is determined to try and escape again, but the next day, Mormont lets him know they knew what happened.
Jon’s throat was dry. “You know?” “Know,” the raven echoed from Mormont’s shoulder. “Know.” The Old Bear snorted. “Do you think they chose me Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch because I’m dumb as a stump, Snow? Aemon told me you’d go. I told him you’d be back. I know my men … and my boys too. Honor set you on the kingsroad … and honor brought you back.” “My friends brought me back,” Jon said. “Did I say it was your honor?” Mormont inspected his plate.
Jon thinks he’ll be executed. Instead, he will be taken along to the great ranging beyond the Wall.
“So I will have an answer from you, Lord Snow, and I will have it now. Are you a brother of the Night’s Watch … or only a bastard boy who wants to play at war?” Jon Snow straightened himself and took a long deep breath. Forgive me, Father. Robb, Arya, Bran … forgive me, I cannot help you. He has the truth of it. This is my place. “I am … yours, my lord. Your man. I swear it. I will not run again.” The Old Bear snorted. “Good. Now go put on your sword.”
Apple = choice. The choice is the Watch. Because the war against the Others is more important.
Apple Quality: Brown and whithered. But still tart and juicy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Second apple: ACOK, Jon I
A former green apple (the valiantly knightly Fossoway kind) is to be dispatched from the Wall to garner support from a Baratheon king...
"Renly is not like to heed a quaking fat boy. I'll send Ser Arnell. He's a deal steadier, and his mother was one of the green-apple Fossoways."
"If it please my lord, what would you have of King Renly?"
The conversation turns toward maester Aemon, his repeated refusal to become king and the incredibly foreshadowy information about the ending of the dragon line.
It made him feel odd. “My lord, why have you told me this, about Maester Aemon?” “Must I have a reason?” Mormont shifted in his seat, frowning. “Your brother Robb has been crowned King in the North. You and Aemon have that in common. A king for a brother.” “And this too,” said Jon. “A vow.” (…)
Jon drew himself up, taut as a bowstring. “And if it did trouble me, what might I do, bastard as I am?” “What will you do?” Mormont asked. “Bastard as you are?” “Be troubled,” said Jon, “and keep my vows.”
Apple = choice. The choice is the Watch. The bigger picture is more important.
Apple Quality: green and unripe. (But honorable.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Third apple: ACOK, Jon VII
Jon and the Qhorin Halfhand crew are on the losing side of a game of cat and mouse with the warg-powered wildlings. Squire Dalbridge is about to sacrifice his life by going to shoot the Wildlings that are stalking them.
The squire bowed his head. "Leave me as many arrows as you can spare, brothers." He stroked his longbow. "And see my garron has an apple when you're home. He's earned it, poor beastie."
He's staying to die, Jon realized.
And that’s almost right at the end of the chapter. This is the only apple chapter where Jon is NOT immediately confronted with a moral dilemma of loyalty or the making of choices. And Dalbridge’s self-sacrifice, his off-page death, all of that means it’s a more long-term projection of the dilemma.
The next, final chapter, Jon and Qhorin Halfhand are captured and he is compelled to kill Qhorin to prove himself a turncloak to the Wildlings, in order to start his Undercover Operation.
The flames were burning low by then, the warmth fading. “The fire will soon go out,” Qhorin said, “but if the Wall should ever fall, all the fires will go out.” There was nothing Jon could say to that. He nodded. “We may escape them yet,” the ranger said. “Or not.” “I’m not afraid to die.” It was only half a lie. “It may not be so easy as that, Jon.” He did not understand. “What do you mean?”
(…)
Rattleshirt’s bone armor clattered loudly as he laughed. “Then kill the Halfhand, bastard.” “As if he could,” said Qhorin. “Turn, Snow, and die.” And then Qhorin’s sword was coming at him and somehow Longclaw leapt upward to block. The force of impact almost knocked the bastard blade from Jon’s hand, and sent him staggering backward. You must not balk, whatever is asked of you.
(…)
He knew, he thought numbly. He knew what they would ask of me. He thought of Samwell Tarly then, of Grenn and Dolorous Edd, of Pyp and Toad back at Castle Black. Had he lost them all, as he had lost Bran and Rickon and Robb? Who was he now? What was he?
“Get him up.” Rough hands dragged him to his feet. Jon did not resist. “Do you have a name?” Ygritte answered for him. “His name is Jon Snow. He is Eddard Stark’s blood, of Winterfell.”
(ACOK, Jon VIII)
Ouch. From this point on, Jon will have to make his own choices, no longer guided by other people’s rules, other people’s honor. The choices will be harder, lonelier. They will be contradictory, they will involve even more tangible loss. They will involve dishonor. The reward is as distant as home. Sacrifice. Death.
But one day, the poor beastie will get an apple, he will have earned it.
Apple = choice. The choice is the Watch. The bigger picture.
Apple quality: unknown.
Fourth apple: ASOS, Jon I
As inconspicuously as above, the apple features in a memory of home, featuring not-yet-deserter Mance Rayder at Winterfell, meeting Robb and Jon up to shennanigans:
“I remember,” said Jon with a startled laugh. A young black brother on the wallwalk, yes … “You swore not to tell.”
"And kept my vow. That one, at least."
"We dumped the snow on Fat Tom. He was Father's slowest guardsman." Tom had chased them around the yard afterward, until all three were red as autumn apples. "But you said you saw me twice. When was the other time?"
"When King Robert came to Winterfell to make your father Hand," the King-beyond-the-Wall said lightly. (ASOS, Jon I)
A neat connection between desertion, vow-keeping and the events that led Jon to take his own path to the Wall. Before Meeting Mance, Ygritte has been praising the values of being “free” like the good Little Wildling Propagandist that she is. But Jon isn’t biting yet.
The following conversation gives the backstory of Mance Rayder’s desertion from the Wall. It was over a cloak, mended by a Wildling woman who tended to him while he was injured.
“And she sewed up the rents in my cloak as well, with some scarlet silk from Asshai that her grandmother had pulled from the wreck of a cog washed up on the Frozen Shore. It was the greatest treasure she had, and her gift to me.” He swept the cloak back over his shoulders. “But at the Shadow Tower, I was given a new wool cloak from stores, black and black, and trimmed with black, to go with my black breeches and black boots, my black doublet and black mail. The new cloak had no frays nor rips nor tears … and most of all, no red. The men of the Night’s Watch dressed in black, Ser Denys Mallister reminded me sternly, as if I had forgotten. My old cloak was fit for burning now, he said. “I left the next morning … for a place where a kiss was not a crime, and a man could wear any cloak he chose.” He closed the clasp and sat back down again. “And you, Jon Snow?”
Jon uses Mance’s story of visiting Winterfell to spin his own lie:
“And did you see where I was seated, Mance?” He leaned forward. “Did you see where they put the bastard?” Mance Rayder looked at Jon’s face for a long moment. “I think we had best find you a new cloak,” the king said, holding out his hand.
What will the bastard do? Be troubled and keep his vows. So far, so true. But he did kill Qhorin Halfhand, he is pretending to be a deserter. Lines are a lot more blurry than they used to be.
Apple = choice. The choice is… the Night’s Watch. Shifting more and more toward simply the bigger picture.
Apple quality: red autumn apple.
Red silk patches. Conflicting values. Women. There is uncertainty on the horizon.
Fifth apple. ASOS Jon V.  BIG apple chapter.
His final confrontation as an Undercover Wildling.
This confrontation takes place at the abandoned tower and village of Queenscrown, which gets a closer description in the accompanying Bran chapter:
No one had lived in the village for long years, Bran could see. All the houses were falling down. Even the inn. It had never been much of an inn, to look at it, but now all that remained was a stone chimney and two cracked walls, set amongst a dozen apple trees. One was growing up through the common room, where a layer of wet brown leaves and rotting apples carpeted the floor. The air was thick with the smell of them, a cloying cidery scent that was almost overwhelming. Meera stabbed a few apples with her frog spear, trying to find some still good enough to eat, but they were all too brown and wormy.
(ASOS, Bran III)
The abandonment of Brandon’s Gift is a subject of conflict between Jon and Ygritte. A carpet of rotting apples. It opens the very next Jon chapter, as they are on the way to Queenscrown. Ygritte mocks the farmers who left the Gift as fools. Jon doesn’t take the bait yet. He briefly indulges in a fantasy of introducing Ygritte to Winterfell before being overcome with guilt and shame again. Ygritte is super great at reading his mood:
“Might be after we could come back here, and live in that tower,” she said. “Would you want that, Jon Snow? After?”
He doesn’t think about it, doesn’t answer for a while, it rather reminds him of Ned’s Dream of Spring, the plan to resettle the Gift. The Starks and the Watch.
If winter had come and gone more quickly and spring had followed in its turn, I might have been chosen to hold one of these towers in my father’s name. Lord Eddard was dead, however, his brother Benjen lost; the shield they dreamt together would never be forged. “This land belongs to the Watch,” Jon said. Her nostrils flared. “No one lives here.”
Jon isn’t even tempted. Like, no, Jon, Bambi, you did not love this person, no matter what your telling yourself later. He doesn’t even really contemplate it.
Instead of bonding them closer together, Ygritte’s invitation to make long-term plans has the opposite effect. It fans the flames of what divides them. They argue about raiding and rape. Ygritte spouts nonsense.
“You know nothing, Jon Snow. Daughters are taken, not wives. You’re the ones who steal. You took the whole world, and built the Wall t’ keep the free folk out.”
Ygritte, no, that is not why the Wall was built. You think they built a gargantuan magic ice structure to keep out Styr, Magnar of Thenn, or what? Really? Jon is also sceptical of this version of history:
“Did we?” Sometimes Jon forgot how wild she was, and then she would remind him. “How did that happen?”
"The gods made the earth for all men t' share. Only when the kings come with their crowns and steel swords, they claimed it was all theirs. My trees, they said, you can't eat them apples. My stream, you can't fish here. My wood, you're not t' hunt. My earth, my water, my castle, my daughter, keep your hands away or I'll chop 'em off, but maybe if you kneel t' me I'll let you have a sniff. You call us thieves, but at least a thief has t' be brave and clever and quick. A kneeler only has t' kneel."
Ygritte is basically a bland political extremist. I could sympathize with her criticism of feudal culture if it didn’t come hand in hand with her passionate defense of violent theft and rape culture. Like, you paragon of intelligence, not everyone resides at the fair top of the food chain like you do in your peak fitness status within your warrior culture. But of course, rape is fun! Just bring a knife!
"Harma and the Bag of Bones don't come raiding for fish and apples. They steal swords and axes. Spices, silks, and furs. They grab every coin and ring and jeweled cup they can find, casks of wine in summer and casks of beef in winter, and they take women in any season and carry them off beyond the Wall."
Apples in a breath with women. People should not be “stolen”. But Ygritte thinks men who successfully abduct and rape women are sexy. She’s like Dany that way. There are some cultural divides that cannot be pretended away, and their entire conversation circles around it. Jon is plagued by terrible guilt, he tries to warn Ygritte that their plan is doomed, she (rightfully) suspects his loyalty to the Wildlings and Jon believes himself in love but he never wavers in his actual allegiance to the NW.
She grinned at that, showing Jon the crooked teeth that he had somehow come to love. Wildling to the bone, he thought again, with a sick sad feeling in the pit of his stomach. He flexed the fingers of his sword hand, and wondered what Ygritte would do if she knew his heart. Would she betray him if he sat her down and told her that he was still Ned Stark’s son and a man of the Night’s Watch? He hoped not, but he dare not take that risk.
GRRM is going out of his way to undermine the supposed romance by constantly referring to the conflict between them and the apples-of-choice are just all over.
Anyway, Jon is thoroughly eaten by guilt over having to betray these human beings who are a vicious and brutal threat to the place and people he loves and swore to protect. His true identity is hinted at:
Jon wondered where Ghost was now. Had he gone to Castle Black, or was he was running with some wolfpack in the woods? He had no sense of the direwolf, not even in his dreams. It made him feel as if part of himself had been cut off. Even with Ygritte sleeping beside him, he felt alone. He did not want to die alone.
Ghost. Not Ygritte. Not the wildlings. Not the Watch, even. Ghost. Wolf.
They arrive at the Queenscrown inn and an old man is captured.
Jon walked away. A rotten apple squished beneath his heel. Styr will kill him. The Magnar had said as much at Greyguard; any kneelers they met were to be put to death at once, to make certain they could not raise the alarm. Ride with them, eat with them, fight with them. Did that mean he must stand mute and helpless while they slit an old man's throat?
The apples are rotten. Jon spends one last moment with Ygritte contemplating Queenscrown and then the “kill the old man” business starts. He struggles but ultimately refuses. Bran’s wolf Summer disrupts the tension with a bloody attack and Jon doesn’t hesitate to Escape. Like when they met, Jon didn’t slit Ygritte’s throat, but she slit the old man’s. He will not shoot arrows at her, but she did at him. Love.
Thunder rumbled softly in the distance, but above him the clouds were breaking up. Jon searched the sky until he found the Ice Dragon, then turned the mare north for the Wall and Castle Black. The throb of pain in his thigh muscle made him wince as he put his heels into the old man’s horse. I am going home, he told himself. But if that was true, why did he feel so hollow?
Apple = choice. The choice is… NOT Ygritte. NOT the Wildlings. Time and again. But it also isn’t the Watch. Not as it had been before. Jon followed his instincts, his inner values, but it had a cost, it is hard. Jon is lost.
Apple Quality: rotten.
Sixth apple: ASOS, Jon VII
The Battle at Castle Black They await the attack, Jon and Satin share a meal. And they get a nod to Renly’s peach quote:
"Eat," Jon told him. "There's no knowing when you'll have another chance." He took two buns himself. The nuts were pine nuts, and besides the raisins there were bits of dried apple.  (ASOS, Jon VII)
Compare to Renly, which also took place before a nightly sneak attack.
"A man should never refuse to taste a peach," Renly said as he tossed the stone away. "He may never get the chance again. Life is short, Stannis. Remember what the Starks say. Winter is coming." He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. (ACOK, Catelyn III)
Peaches have an air of incest and hedonism about them, nostalgia and summer, Baratheons and Arya and Asha. The apple is different. It’s about choice, about conflicted loyalty and personal values, about identity and the bigger picture. (And again and again, they connect to women.)
Jon commands part of the fight, it’s grim. He recognizes some of the wildlings as they pepper them with arrows but cannot shoot at who he thinks is Ygritte. Wildlings die, his brothers die. The battle is brutal, Jon’s POV is distant. Satin remains by his side all throughout, grounding him. Jon remembers advice from Theon, from Ned. They eventually beat the wildling attackers with a horrifying fire trap on the stairs, they win. Immediately after, Jon goes looking for Ygritte, Satin still by his side.
The ice crystals had settled over her face, and in the moonlight it looked as though she wore a glittering silver mask. The arrow was black, Jon saw, but it was fletched with white duck feathers. Not mine, he told himself, not one of mine. But he felt as if it were.
We get a Dany-Val nod…
The light of the half-moon turned Val's honey-blond hair a pale silver and left her cheeks as white as snow. She took a deep breath. "The air tastes sweet."
"My tongue is too numb to tell. All I can taste is cold." (ADWD, Jon VIII)
...and a lovely double-layered “not mine, not one of mine”. Not his arrows, but he feels guilty. She is not his pack, but he feels guilty.
She just smiled at that. “D’you remember that cave? We should have stayed in that cave. I told you so.” “We’ll go back to the cave,” he said. “You’re not going to die, Ygritte. You’re not.” “Oh.” Ygritte cupped his cheek with her hand. “You know nothing, Jon Snow,” she sighed, dying.
Jon struggles to let go of the fantasy. He is loyal to the cause of the Watch, if not the letter of the vows, but he knows now that his souls want more. He indulges Ygritte’s fantasy of returning because it’s the only thing he has, the only thing he can offer.
Apple = choice. The choice is… the Watch. But painfully. Numbly. No passion. Duty.
Apple quality: dried.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seventh apple: ASOS, Jon X
Tormund’s daughter Munda.
After vicious attacking Janos Slynt for insulting Ned Stark during a hiostile interrogation in the previous chapter, Jon is sent to kill Mance Rayder under the pretense of parley to prove his loyalty. He is resigned and shame-filled, contemplating his future, where he will be remembered in honorless infamy.  Much bitterness, plenty of woe. His reception by Tormund is surprisingly jovial. They drink mead to honor their fallen Donal Noye and Ygritte, with surprisingly little bitterness. It helps Jon return some of his cheer.
"You bloody crows." Tormund's tone was gruff, yet strangely gentle. "That Longspear stole me daughter. Munda, me little autumn apple. Took her right out o' my tent with all four o' her brothers about.” Toregg slept through it, the great lout, and Torwynd … well, Torwynd the Tame, that says all that needs saying, don’t it? The young ones gave the lad a fight, though.”
“And Munda?” asked Jon. “She’s my own blood,” said Tormund proudly. “She broke his lip for him and bit one ear half off, and I hear he’s got so many scratches on his back he can’t wear a cloak. She likes him well enough, though. And why not? He don’t fight with no spear, you know. Never has. So where do you think he got that name? Har!”  Jon had to laugh. Even now, even here.
Autumn apple. Stolen women. Cloak.
Stealing women was a hot topic with Ygritte and Jon is immediately concerned, but is reassured. The tenor of the conversation is conciliatory, while he is revealed to be loyal to the Watch, there is mutual respect. In Jon’s thoughts, Ygritte becomes a mentor voice, drifting away from the romantic woe of before.
Easy for you to say, he thought back. You died brave in battle, storming the castle of a foe. I’m going to die a turncloak and a killer. Nor would his death be quick, unless it came on the end of Mance’s sword.
Similarly to Dany later, Jon is arguing with dead beloved abusers in his head, like she will do in ADWD with Viserys. Ygritte is less obviously horrific, but the “voices in my head” aspect and the sheer idealising that both of them engage in feels disconcerting. Never the less, we see Jon’s current identity status on Facebook is “turncloak”. Not Night’s Watch.
The rest of Mance’s “court” is less welcoming, but Mance draws him in for a private conference. The Horn of Winter is revealed, the mutual cause of the Wildlings and the Night’s Watch is identified.
“If I sound the Horn of Winter, the Wall will fall. Or so the songs would have me believe. There are those among my people who want nothing more …” “But once the Wall is fallen,” Dalla said, “what will stop the Others?”
(Dalla has the brains that Ygritte lacked. Why can SHE not be Jon’s mentor?)
Mance offers to hand over the Horn of Joramun if they let the Wildlings pass through the Wall, or he will destroy the Wall in three days. Jon hesitates because he fears they will ransack the place, but he also has no negotiating credit with Thorne and Slynt. He contemplates just smashing the Horn, when suddenly Stannis attacks. The Wildlings are smashed, a helpless Jon enters the tent with Val to attend Dalla.
He is just... disillusioned.
Apple = choice. The choice is… the bigger picture. The Watch is headed by irrational scum, the Wildlings are no less dangerous to the North than they were before and Jon has no hope of saving his ruined reputation either way. He was about to murder Mance, then about to smash his bargaining chip, yet he has no ill will toward them. Only a depressed, numb resignation to preventing the worst of all outcomes.
Apple Quality: autumn apple.
Again with the autumn apple. There are only 3 “autumn apples” in the books, all in ASOS. Jon I (above with Mance), Samwell II, and Jon X here.
In Jon I it connected Mance’s disloyalty to the Watch to the red-and-black cloak given to him by a woman. Also Bael the Bard, deception and stealing. Jon consults his inner values, and chooses pragmatism. His break with “blind” honor will leave him flailing a bit.
In Jon X it specifically refers to a young woman being stolen. Jon consults his inner values, he chooses the bigger picture, but he’s frayed and his choice is interrupted. Stannis will offer him Winterfell. Ghost will remind him of who he is. Ultimately, he will become Lord Commander and his struggle with loyalty will cease for a long time.
What’s Sam’s autumn apple about?  They are listed with many foodstuffs that the angry NW brother’s at Craster’s after the fight at the Fist of the First Men expect to receive. Mormont just remembered the true purpose of the Watch. Gilly has just given birth to her son. Sam offers to take the boy, Craster gets mad. they bury a dead brother and the mood is mutinous.
“Apples,” said Garth of Greenaway. “Barrels and barrels of crisp autumn apples. There are apple trees out there, I saw ’em.”
A confrontation breaks out and they kill Craster and stab Mormont. Sam’s friends flee, the others raid and rape, Sam cradles a dying Mormont. Some wives approach and order Sam to take Gilly to safety.
Gilly was crying. “Me and the babe. Please. I’ll be your wife, like I was Craster’s. Please, ser crow. He’s a boy, just like Nella said he’d be. If you don’t take him, they will.” “They?” said Sam, and the raven cocked its black head and echoed, “They. They. They.” “The boy’s brothers,” said the old woman on the left. “Craster’s sons. The white cold’s rising out there, crow. I can feel it in my bones. These poor old bones don’t lie. They’ll be here soon, the sons.”
The massive abundance of apples suggests a link to the abundance of women, to the connection to inner values over formal loyalty, to the “stealing” of Gilly to save her. To the massive bigger picture. With Jon it translates to his trademark quick-thinking pragmatism, with Sam it translates to compassion and identifying valuable information.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
8th and final apple: ADWD, Jon V  - The Grand Appling.
ADWD Jon V is another big apple chapter:  you have to choose!
Much time has passed since the last apples were mentioned. Jon is Lord Commander and has sent away Sam, Gilly and maester Aemon. The Wildlings are south of the Wall. Food is a constant worry. Bowen Marsh is upset with Jon, Jon is super-diplomatic. Not. It’s time to bring provisions to the Wildlings at Mole’s Town. A Mirror to Dany in ADWD, Daenerys VI, bringing food to the Astapori refugees. The Wildlings are grumpy. Jon struggles to balance the culture clash between free folk, Stannis’ men and Wildlings.
Pig ignorance, Jon thought. The free folk were no different than the men of the Night’s Watch; some were clean, some dirty, but most were clean at times and dirty at other times.
Jon is much removed from his earlier woeful struggles or idealism. A weary pragmatism guides his every action. Grey.
Apples ensue:
"You can have an onion or an apple," Jon heard Hairy Hal tell one woman, "but not both. You got to pick."
The woman did not seem to understand. "I need two of each. One o' each for me, t'others for my boy. He's sick, but an apple will set him right."
Hal shook his head. "He has to come get his own apple. Or his onion. Not both. Same as you. Now, is it an apple or an onion? Be quick about it, now, there's more behind you."
"An apple," she said, and he gave her one, an old dried thing, small and withered.
"Move along, woman," shouted a man three places back. "It's cold out here."
The woman paid the shout no mind. "Another apple," she said to Hairy Hal. "For my son. Please. This one is so little."
Hal looked to Jon. Jon shook his head. They would be out of apples soon enough. If they started giving two to everyone who wanted two, the latecomers would get none.
"Out of the way," a girl behind the woman said. Then she shoved her in the back. The woman staggered, lost her apple, and fell. The other foodstuffs in her arms went flying. Beans scattered, a turnip rolled into a mud puddle, a sack of flour split and spilled its precious contents in the snow.
Apples are once again almost aggressively connected to choices. Apples or onions. Not both. You have to pick.
Barring another meta, I can’t really say what the onion is supposed to represent. Some things that echoe Jon’s apple themes:
His sons were good fighters and better sailors, but they did not know how to talk to lords. They were lowborn, even as I was, but they do not like to recall that. When they look at our banner, all they see is a tall black ship flying on the wind. They close their eyes to the onion.  (ACOK, Davos I)
Denial.
Dany nibbled at an onion and reflected ruefully on the faithlessness of men. (ACOK, Daenerys III)
Faithlessness.
The feast was a meager enough thing, a succession of fish stews, black bread, and spiceless goat. The tastiest thing Theon found to eat was an onion pie. Ale and wine continued to flow well after the last of the courses had been cleared away. (ACOK, Theon II)
Theon about to be ordered to attack Winterfell. Betrayal.
The last time it was life I brought to Storm's End, shaped to look like onions. This time it is death, in the shape of Melisandre of Asshai. (ACOK, Davos II)
Life and death brought by the same person.
Melisandre’s manichean world view vs. Davos’ more encompassing one:
"What if I am? It seems to me that most men are grey."
"If half of an onion is black with rot, it is a rotten onion. A man is good, or he is evil."  (ACOK, Davos II)
Bless you Sam.
Hungry as he was, Sam knew he would retch if he so much as tried a bite. How could they eat the poor faithful garrons who had carried them so far? When Craster's wives brought onions, he seized one eagerly. One side was black with rot, but he cut that part off with his dagger and ate the good half raw. (ASOS, Samwell II)
Considering apples represent the choice you make to serve an ethical bigger picture (not necessarily loyalty to an order), onions seem to show a contrasting duality of bad and good, a refusal to position oneself honestly, dirty compromises, the darkness in human beings.
Davos’ entire arc circles around being a very decent human being who none the less supports a whole lot of questionable crap. Our resident kraken Theon is torn inside unable to choose between Greyjoy and Stark identity and becomes monstrous.
Melisandre downright denies the existence of grey. The presence of bad cancels out all good.  Samwell, on the other hand, embraces the good while disregarding the bad.
Ygritte smelled of onion. Dany eats wild onion on her dragon grassland chapter,  Jorah eats onion. Brienne has onion soup on her way to Lady Stoneheart. Jon offers the Wildlings onion soup after they burn their god’s for Melisandre in echange for safety. Dark compromises.
So the choice between apples and onions is the choice to MAKE a choice. Stop hedging your bets or practicing denial, position yourself, one way or the other.
The woman who refuses to choose, loses her apple, loses the fruit that will set her sick son right, loses her cance at following her inner moral compass and doing the right thing.
There is a tussle, Jon tries to rally them with a speech. They are in a Mutiny at Craster’s Keep kind of mood.
“You want more food?” asked Jon. “The food’s for fighters. Help us hold the Wall, and you’ll eat as well as any crow.” Or as poorly, when the food runs short. (…)
“Fight for you?” This voice was thickly accented. Sigorn, the young Magnar of Thenn, spoke the Common Tongue haltingly at best. “Not fight for you. Kill you better. Kill all you.” The raven flapped its wings. “Kill, kill.” Sigorn’s father, the old Magnar, had been crushed beneath the falling stair during his attack on Castle Black. I would feel the same if someone asked me to make common cause with the Lannisters, Jon told himself. “Your father tried to kill us all,” he reminded Sigorn. “The Magnar was a brave man, yet he failed. And if he had succeeded … who would hold the Wall?”
Jon believes in the greyness of men, but he also believes in choices. You don’t have to be perfect to do the right thing. But you have to do the right thing. Or a thing, anyway. You have to choose.
There is more commotion. Jon decides to make it simpler.
"Hal, what was it that you told this woman?"
Hal looked confused. "About the food, you mean? An apple or an onion? That's all I said. They got to pick."
"You have to pick," Jon Snow repeated. "All of you. No one is asking you to take our vows, and I do not care what gods you worship. My own gods are the old gods, the gods of the North, but you can keep the red god, or the Seven, or any other god who hears your prayers. It's spears we need. Bows. Eyes along the Wall. (…)
He recruits, actively.
“The choice is yours,” Jon Snow told them. “Those who want to help us hold the Wall, return to Castle Black with me and I’ll see you armed and fed. The rest of you, get your turnips and your onions and crawl back inside your holes.”
Apples yay, onions nay. Dany killed the slavers of Astapor, and left alive only children under the age of 12. Jon recruit ages 12 and up for the Watch, girls and boys. Dany killed 163 random slavers. Jon recruits 63 Wildlings.
By the time the last withered apple had been handed out, the wagons were crowded with wildlings, and they were sixty-three stronger than when the column had set out from Castle Black that morning.
The apples win out. No more mention of onions in this chapter.
The chapter ends on a grey note, uncertain but hopeful.
Marsh was unconvinced. “You’ve added sixty-three more mouths, my lord … but how many are fighters, and whose side will they fight on? If it’s the Others at the gates, most like they’ll stand with us, I grant you … but if it’s Tormund Giantsbane or the Weeping Man come calling with ten thousand howling killers, what then?” “Then we’ll know. So let us hope it never comes to that.”
Hilariously, it is not the treachery of the apple-choosing wildlings Jon will have to worry about.
The abundance of onions and apples in this chapter sets up the struggle Jon faces in later ADWD chapters. The bigger picture v. Arya. Apples are done, for now, the onions stalk him. He tries to strikes a balance. He hesitates, he sends Mance, he struggles. In the end, the Pink Letter sends him over the edge.
Apples v. onions.  Jon has chosen.
Apples = choice. The choices is… NOT the Watch. Arya. The North. The bigger picture. House Stark.
Apple Quality: withered. Like the very first apple.
Jon stood tall. He told himself that he would die well; that much he could do, at the least. “I know the penalty for desertion, my lord. I’m not afraid to die.” “Die!” the raven cried. “Nor live, I hope,” Mormont said, cutting his ham with a dagger and feeding a bite to the bird. (AGOT, Jon IX)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In conclusion:
Apples signal the necessity for Jon make a moral choice according to his own personal values.
Jon always has his eyes on the bigger picture.
His choices becomes increasingly divorced from the concept of loyalty to the Watch.
There is a pronounced conflict between apple and onion, between moral choice and refusal to choose. Jon tries to walk the line between the letter of his vows and his values. He ends up choosing his values. It goes badly.
The quality of the apples has a relationship with the ease of choosing.
whithered apples are fairly clean choices,
rotten apples are traumatic choices,
autumn apples relate to choices influenced by the wisdom of women, the stealing of women.
There is a future apple promised to “the beastie” as a reward.
If we want to draw a connection to the show, Jon will clearly face another apples v. onions conflict and the need to choose will feature heavily. It will go badly. But there is the promise of home and reward.

Warnings: none
♡♡♡
If you've ever had amnesia, you'd know that things seem very quick.
Little flashbacks of what you're guessing to be your backstory come back in little spurts that never last long enough and are gone too soon. They leave huge, gaping holes in your background information from what your favorite color is to who your parents were. Try your story on for size.
You were Y/n Wachowski. A sassy, quick-witted teenage girl with a love for speed and a sharp tongue. Parents? Unknown. Distant relatives? Undiscovered. Hometown? Who the fuck knows. You were sent to live with the Wachowski's as your permanent foster parents after you were discovered wandering around the woods by a couple of hikers. They said that they found you wearing a ripped and dirty jumpsuit with pastel colors that looked like it was ten times smaller than your size. When they had tried to confront you, it was almost as if you couldn't hear them, your mouth open and unspeaking. Eyes wandering, glossy and unseeing.
You couldn't remember much about your past. Most of the time it was like looking at a blank sheet of paper, ready to get into the printer but it's out of ink. After being diagnosed with a concussion and severe amnesia, you were seen as unfit to take care of yourself, so that was how you ended up with the Wachowskis. But just because you were lucky enough to have loving and patient foster parents didn't mean that you had an answer to every question they asked. You had no idea what your favorite color was, what you liked to do in your free time, or even if you were a night owl.
It was like you didn't even remember who you were. Like you had just been born, only you weren't a baby and were instead a teenager. It got incredibly lonely being a child with no memories, and the kids at school found you very creepy. But it was okay. Tom and Maddie made sure to give you as much love as was humanly possible, and when the bullying at school got to the point where they would follow you home, they switched you to homeschooling.
It appeared that you not only had no existing memories of your past, but you also had barely any idea how things on earth worked. Whenever someone mentioned examinations, vaccines, bucket lists, and even governmental agencies, you had no clue what they were talking about.
Not everyone was as patient as Tom and Maddie were, unfortunately. Most people would assume that you were kidding when you asked them what a protractor was or why people ride animals. It all seemed so strange and new to you, like Tarzan when he was visiting the human world and not the ape land he was familiar with. But out of it all, there was one thing that you became absolutely fascinated with.
Cars.
The faster, the better. You seemed to have an unchecked need for speed that tickled at your mind every time you got behind the wheel. Whenever Tom allowed it, you'd take the truck or his old squad motorcycle out for a spin in the abandoned corn fields where you could do as many tricks as you wanted without putting anyone else in danger. One of your favorites was driving backwards.
It's during one of those days where our story finally begins. The Montana sun was high up in the sky, beating down its scorching rays onto the untouched pavement. A flock of birds fled for the telephone polls in an attempt to escape from the ever increasing sound of revving coming from the abandoned corn field near Crazy Carl's traps for the supposed "Blue Devil." In the midst of the dead and crusty corn stalks, there sat a young girl on a very old squad motorcycle. Her hair fluttered gently in the slight breeze running through the air, a pair of sunglasses perched delicately atop her nose in the absence of a helmet. Before her stood a makeshift riser composed of some old wooden slabs she had "borrowed" from an old tree house a little ways south. A smirk played across her lips as she kicked up the bike's kickstand and revved the engine.
"Alright, Y/n, if you make this jump, you'll be the most famous girl in Green Hills…" Her words got lost in the wind as she took a deep breath and began to ride towards the jump, her speed increasing with every passing second. The distance began to decrease, her growing closer and closer until an abnormal electric blue blur zipped past her. Startled, she swerved, momentarily losing control of her bike as she slowed to a stop, planting her boots firmly on the ground. Chest heaving, she flipped her sunglasses up onto her forehead and slipped off of the bike, looking around the empty field to see if she hit anything.
What was that? She wondered.
Unbeknownst to her, a couple feet away from her, hidden deep within some dehydrated bushes was a royal blue hedgehog. He had been on his way back to his cave after taking a turtle for a little joy ride down the interstate when he spotted his favorite human on earth, Star Chaser. She was the most amazing girl he had ever seen, and lived with Donut Lord and Pretzel Lady. He would make it a priority to hang out with her every time she was out practicing her racing tricks, a dopey grin spreading on his face every time he saw her ecstatic smile. She just never knew he was there.
More than anything, he wished that he could get to hang out with her just once. Just for one day, spent full of speeding down the empty country roads and flying over makeshift jumps and laughing about the funny faces they made from the wind hitting their skin. But he knew better. He had to stay hidden, just like Longclaw said. Never stop running, and always stay hidden… alone.
There was something about her that just drew him to her, something familiar. He watched with caution as Star Chaser searched the field a bit more, her footfalls making satisfying crunching sounds on the long gone plants. Her beautiful e/c eyes searched the grounds before her for whatever had interrupted her practice. Finally, after she was satisfied with not having hit anything, she got back onto the cycle, flipped her sunglasses back on, and zipped away, leaving a trail of smoky exhaust in her wake.
The blue hedgehog zoomed back to his cave himself, dodging trees and bushes with expertise. The whole time he ran, he couldn't prevent his mind from wondering what life might be like if he were somehow able to live alongside the humans. If he could have a conversation with Star Chaser that didn't exist in his imagination, to maybe even discover why she seemed so familiar. What would life be like if he didn't have to hide?
♡♡♡
Just when things finally start getting familiar, the concept of moving decides to rear its ugly head in. Y/n had found out that her foster dad got a promotion, a job in another city with a higher ranking and a wider variety of donut holes to snack on. That meant that they were going to have to leave Green Hills.
But, knowing her, she shoved the grief and frustration so far down inside her until it became nonexistent. Maddie had left on a trip to see her sister, leaving Y/n and Tom alone. They had had a freak power outage the night before, leaving Tom a bit on edge. His phone kept ringing off the hook as his coworker was just a bit dependent on him, and had no idea if he should just ignore the 911 phone calls or pick them up.
“Remind me to drive by the library tomorrow,” Y/n set down her latest novel on the counter by the car keys. She watched as Tom stole a bit of frosting off of the cake and scrunched up her nose at the lack of sanitation. “I need to return this before we get fined.”
Tom nodded just as his phone began ringing. He held up a finger to his daughter and leaned against the counter, lifting up the phone to his ear as he began to talk to his wife. Y/n turned to the fridge and was trying to decide whether or not she was hungry or just bored as she did her best to not listen to them talking about the move. Just as she was about to reach for the watermelon, a loud clattering noise came from outside. Tom and Y/n exchanged an alarmed glance and quickly shuffled over to the window, childishly trying to shove each other out of the way so they could get a good look.
“Shit,” Y/n swore as she took in the knocked over trash bins sitting next to the garage.
“Watch your potty mouth,” Tom scolded, but a smile still stayed on his lips. “The racoons are back.” Y/n watched as he quickly turned towards one of the junk drawers and pulled out Maddie’s bear tranquilizer gun. She snorted.
“You better not be using my tranquilizer gun,” she heard Maddie’s voice say over the speaker. “That’s for bears.”
“Good,” Tom grinned as he loaded up the machine. “Now I know it’ll work. Y/n, stay inside.” Y/n scoffed as he hung up the phone and opened up the back door. Yes, of course she was going to stay safely inside like a crappy sidekick and miss the potential action of scaring trash pandas half to death. Grabbing an extra flashlight, she raced out after her dad to see him pressed up against the side of the shed, holding the gun and flashlight near his face. He jumped once she saddled up next to him, putting her flashlight in front of her like her own makeshift gun.
“I thought I told you to stay inside,” He narrowed his brows. To his dismay, Y/n only shrugged.
“You did. I didn’t listen,” she grinned, making it obvious that he had no other choice than to let her stay. He sighed, but nevertheless nodded. On a quick countdown from three, the two burst into the shed, waving their flashlights around like mad men.
“Green Hills PD, put your paws up!” Tom hollered. Y/n slowly made her way out from behind him, flashing her light around the empty room until it finally came to a stop. Her eyes widened in shock and her jaw nearly dropped to the floor as she tried to make sense of what exactly she was looking at. An electric blue creature wearing white gloves and tennis shoes stood before them, holding what looked like a gold wedding ring between his forefinger and thumb. She couldn’t tell what was stranger: the fact that he existed or the fact that he seemed oddly familiar. The creature’s green eyes flashed from hers to her father’s before he let out a small, nervous chuckle.
“Uhh, meow?”
Tumblr media
And then, Tom screamed. His fear and the sudden introduction of the loud noise caused Y/n to scream, too, which finally led to the little blue creature screaming. But the longer Y/n stared at it, the more she began to experience a slight hint of deja vu. She couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that she had seen this thing before.
“Wait,” she whispered, barely loud enough for her dad to hear, but the blue creature’s ears perked up. He turned his attention back to her and the second they locked eyes, the same sense of familiarity began coursing through his veins. After all of those days spent watching her from afar, how did he never notice the e/c eyes? Where had he seen them before?
Unfortunately, Tom just had to go and ruin the moment by pulling the trigger on the tranq gun.
“Dad, no!” Y/n cried, but it was already too late as the dart sank into the blue creature’s thigh. They could only watch as the animal looked down at the needle in his leg and slowly looked back up with a hurt glare.
“Ow,” he whined, his eyes already beginning to lose their concentration. Y/n was about to take a step towards the creature, but Tom wrapped his hand around her arm to stop her. The creature’s eyes floated over Tom’s shirt, zeroing in on the words that littered the old fabric. “San… Fran…sisco?” He muttered. The ring he had been holding on to loosely slipped from his fingers, and began rolling across the floor. As its velocity increased, it began expanding, deying all laws of logic as a portal overlooking the given city appeared. Y/n and Tom’s jaws dropped to the floor as they watched the creature stumble, dropping his little bag through the portal and collapsing onto the ground. Y/n’s heart ached for the poor thing as she fought to get out of her father’s grasp in order to help him.
Within seconds, the portal closed up, eliminating the slight wind that had appeared. “N-No…” The creature whimpered before finally passing out. A thick silence crossed over the three as Tom’s grip on Y/n’s arm loosened, both humans trying to figure out what the heck they just witnessed.
“What the actual fuck?” Y/n breathed.
“Language…”
♡♡♡
“Yes. Let’s shoot the poor thing and then put him in a cage,” Y/n rolled her eyes sarcastically, watching as her father poked the blue creature resting inside of their dog’s old cage. She batted at his hand, and gave him a death glare, but he just sighed.
“Come on, kid, what if he’s an alien?” Tom asked incredulously, turning back to the sleeping creature. He nudged its head with a metal spatula and sighed.
“I don’t know…” Y/n sighed, resting her head on her knuckle. I mean, she had to admit he was kind of… cute. The nostalgia that he was causing was just an added complication. There was something about his entire being that seemed eerily familiar to her, but she couldn’t for the life of her figure out why. Tom slowly withdrew something that had fallen onto the padding; an electric blue quill. The two slowly leaned closer to inspect the object, noting the little blue bolts of electricity that whizzed across its surface. It absolutely fascinated Y/n, while Tom seemed a little more apprehensive. He turned away from the cage and set it down on the counter, running a hand over his face.
“This is nuts,” he whispered. Y/n took the opportunity to get a little closer to the being, scanning his body with careful eyes. She debated reaching through the bars to touch him, but before she had a chance to, his eyes slowly popped open. Her eyes widened and she stayed perfectly still as he pushed himself up to a standing position and made his way to open the cage. Her breath catches in her throat as he finally looks up at her and gives her a small, sheepish smile, stumbling out onto the counter top. Even in the given circumstances, the only thing that the girl can think of is how absolutely adorable he is.
...wait, what?
“Star Chaser?” Y/n quickly turned her attention back to the present and furrowed her brows in confusion. Who was Star Chaser? “Donut Lord?” The blue being slurred, holding on to the cage for support. Tom swiveled around at the sound and scoffed.
“So the Blue Devil can talk. You’re not here to abduct us are you?”
“YOU abducted ME,” the Blue Devil replied defensively, pressing his hand against his chest. Y/n rolled her eyes and stepped between the two, looking the being in the eyes.
“I am very sorry for that-”
“Why are you apologizing to it?!” Tom cried, running his hands through his hair incredulously. Y/n just rolled her eyes.
“I told him to just leave you alone. But, if I may ask, who are you and why were you in our shed?” She finished. Tom facepalmed behind her while the Blue Devil did his best to concentrate his fatigue on the beautiful girl standing before him. Gosh, her eyes were pretty…
“I-I needed a safe place, and Donut Lord’s house was the only place I could think of, Star Chaser!”
“Why does he keep calling me Donut Lord?” Tom asked warily, slowly reaching for the tranq gun. Y/n quickly shot him a glare and he let out an annoyed huff. Even though he was her foster father, they acted like siblings with good-hearted and frequent quarrels.
“Because you talk to donuts,” the Blue Devil explained. “And then eat them when they get out of line.” Y/n snorted, trying her best to contain her laughter by pressing the back of her hand to her mouth. She didn’t notice the small smile that formed on the blue hedgehog’s face as Tom shrugged, nodding his head slightly.
“Fair. Why is she Star Chaser?” The Blue Devil got a distant look on his face, a small, thoughtful smile still lingering on his lips.
“I’ve watched her race out in the fields. It’s amazing how fast she can go. Sometimes I wonder if she’s trying to chase the stars out of the sky…” A soft smile slowly formed on your lips at his words. No one had ever talked about you like that before.
The distant look on his face was suddenly replaced by one with worry. His eyes began frantically glancing around the room, Y/n being able to practically see the alarms going off in his head. “Wait, where are my… Why am I still on earth? Oh no, I lost my rings!”
“Rings?” Y/n furrowed her brows in confusion. Just then, a loud rumbling sound came from outside. It had such an impact that it shook the entire house, startling the chimes that Maddie had hung up above the sink. The three looked around in confusion.
“What’s happening? Is this your mothership?” Tom began panicking, walking briskly around the table towards the window. He jabbed an accusing finger at the nervous hedgehog. “I do NOT want my daughter getting probed.”
“Dad, stop,” Y/n sighed, following him towards the window. “You’re the one who abducted him. Can’t you be just a little bit sentimental?”
“Thanks,” the hedgehog muttered just loud enough for Y/n to hear. She stood next to her foster dad at the window and peered out the glass. A giant grey vehicle that had been passing stopped and began backing up towards their driveway.
“What the hell kind of make is that?” Y/n muttered. The Blue Devil was by their side in a second and was peering through the window too. Once he caught sight of the ginormous lab van, he let out a squeak and pulled the white curtains shut.
“They’re after me!”
“Who’s after you?” Y/n questioned in concern. She got pushed behind Tom as he stood protectively in front of her, eyeing the Blue Devil suspiciously.
“And what does that have to do with us?”
“I don’t have time to explain, but you have to help me!” He pleaded. Y/n felt her heart sink for the creature, her instant gut feeling telling her that they had to help him. He was in danger, albeit he was apparently a runaway. Unfortunately, Tom had different ideas as he furiously shook his head.
“No, we don’t!”
“But Dad-”
“Y/n, enough,” Tom ended her protests sternly. He turned back to the blue hedgehog and furrowed his brows, wondering what reason he could possibly have that would need them to help him. “Why should we help you?”
“Well, my legs, which normally would be classified as legal weapons, feel like spaghetti. I need your help, please! It’s life or death.” The Blue Devil’s green eyes pleaded to Tom. Y/n slowly made her way out from behind her dad and glanced down at him. He knew exactly what to say in order to get Tom to help him, didn’t he? It was almost as if he had been there all of those times when Tom was wishing for someone to come to him in their time of need. His facade crumbled and he caved in almost instantly.
“Alright, fine. Y/n, take him up to the attic. I’ll take a look at what’s going on outside.” Tom ordered. Y/n nodded and motioned for the blue hedgehog to follow her. They quickly scampered towards the stairs, and as they began to walk quietly up the flights, Y/n noticed two things. One, Crazy Carl was right after all. The little “Blue Devil” was a lot larger than she had expected him to be, measuring up to be about half of her height. And two, the thing was having a horrific time walking. With a strangely racing heart, Y/n slowed down her pace and offered her hand to the being. He gave her a small smile and accepted it, wrapping his gloved hand around her own.
“My actual name is Y/n, by the way,” she finally spoke in an attempt to break the hurried silence. “But I like Star Chaser better.” He smiled beside her, trying to figure out why the girl before him seemed so familiar.
“I just thought it suited you. My name’s Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog.”
“I knew you weren’t an alien,” Y/n said as she let go of his hand to pull down the ladder. She picked the hedgehog up and set him down gently inside the attic. His name kept ringing throughout her head on an endless loop, like it was supposed to bring back some big part of her life, but it always came back empty. She gave him a small smile and was about to head back down when he stopped her.
“Wait,” his dreamy green eyes were full of concern as he looked straight into Y/n’s. “Be careful.”
Y/n appreciated how genuinely concerned he was for her safety. It was a beautiful gulp of fresh air amidst all of the others who thought she was crazy or weird. At least his sincerity made the fact that he had been basically stalking her and her family for a while now a little bit less creepy. Y/n gave him a reassuring smile and closed the attic door, racing all the way back down to the main floor where she skidded to a halt by the door.
There was Tom, with some very strange looking man sporting a signature Man with the Bowler Hat mustache standing in the Y/n slowly approached her dad and watched as the man turned his attention towards her.
“Oh, I didn’t realize you had a daughter,” the man smiled creepily, sending shivers down her spine. She scrunched her nose as Tom wrapped his arm around her shoulder protectively.
“I have a name,” she raised her brows skeptically. “Y/n.”
At the sound of her name, the man got a shocked look on his face, his eyes widening to the size of saucers as he stared intensely at her. Tom and Y/n exchanged confused glances before the man quickly snapped back into reality.
“Y/n…” he repeated. “Interesting. Anyways, where was I? Oh, yes,” he suddenly propelled himself towards Tom, becoming very uncomfortably close to his face. Y/n slowly sank into her father’s arm in order to back away from the strange man. “I was spitting out formulas while you were still spitting up formula.”
“I was breastfed, actually,” Tom responded, mildly weirded out. Y/n’s face contorted in disgust. What the hell was this conversation?
“Nice,” he nodded. “Rub that in my orphan face.”
“Okay,” Y/n spoke up, finally having enough as she pushed the two apart. “Listen, I have no idea who you are and why you are here, but I think you should be leaving.”
“Ooh, fiesty one,” the man nodded, narrowing his eyebrows at you to the point that the folds on his forehead nearly overlapped one another. “Doctor Robotnik, I-”
A sudden thump sounded from the kitchen, startling the man enough to make him shut up. Tom and Y/n froze, running through every possible excuse in their minds as to what that could have been that wasn’t Sonic. Y/n turned to Robotnik and offered him the best sheepish smile she could muster.
“Um… Racoons?”
Robotnik gave her a fake smile and shouldered his way into the house. Y/n and Tom scrambled to follow him, praying to god that their little blue friend wasn’t sitting on the kitchen counter. Thankfully, once they reached the kitchen, they were greeted with a friendly racoon, shoveling handfuls of celebratory cake into its mouth. Y/n breathed a small sigh of relief through her mouth.
“See? Racoons.” Tom spoke defiantly, placing his hands on his hips. Y/n began to search the room quietly for any sign of Sonic while Robotnik was preparing to leave. They had almost gotten him out the door when he stopped and backtracked. In confusion, Y/n and Tom followed his gaze and their hearts stopped.
He slowly held up the lone electric blue quill for all to see.
“Looks like I was right,” a shit-eating grin formed on his face. “Note the lack of surprise.” He pointed to his monotone expression and Y/n could already tell that she fucking hated him. She slowly began to back away from him when a floating egg shaped orb harnessing a bright red laser became very interested in Tom. Y/n’s heart raced, back growing tense as she began to hesitantly back away until Robotnik gave her a warning glare.
She wasn’t going anywhere.
“So, let’s try this again. Where. Is. It?”
“Look, man, leave her out of this. We have no idea what ‘it’ is,” Tom exclaimed, beginning to hold his hands up in surrender. Robonik simply shook his head and pushed some buttons on the gloves that he was wearing.
“I hate liars. You have five seconds to tell me where it is. Five… Four…” He began to count down, Y/n only being able to watch in horror as the white orb came ever closer to her father, the menacing light flashing. Daring someone to challenge it. Tom stared, his facade crumbling with every second that was counted down, trying desperately to find a way out. Things were looking to death when a sudden electric blue blur shot out from behind the counter and stood in front of Y/n, hands outspread in protection.
“Wait!” Sonic cried. “Don’t hurt them!”
Y/n looked down at the little hedgehog in shock, and was startled when Robotnik let out the most girlish scream anyone had ever heard come from the pipes of a man. Then Tom punched him in the face.
“Yes, go Dad!” Y/n whooped as the Doctor crumpled onto the floor, unconscious. Their victory was short lived, however, as the second she finished talking, she was dragged behind the counter by Sonic to avoid getting hit in the face by a laser beam. The three watched in horror as the Wachowski’s custom designed kitchen became destroyed by the angry red bots, shooting around with no instructions as their master was now taking a nap on the floor. Before Y/n even had the chance to ask what they should do, they noticed that Sonic was already missing. Looking frantically around the room, Tom motioned up to one of the kitchen cupboards, and sure enough, there was Sonic preparing to jump onto one of the bots that was probably scanning for their heat signatures or something equally significant. The two shook their heads rapidly, but Sonic simply gave them one of the most adorable sassy nods Y/n had ever seen. He leapt onto the robot, trying desperately to smack it as it spun around like a horse without a head.
Tumblr media
“This-was a… horrible idea!” Sonic screamed before he got flung off the robot, sailing through the air, and landing straight into Y/n’s arms. He offered her a sheepish smile, and Y/n rolled her eyes, a smile still playing across her lips. She set him down just in time to see her dad knock the bot out with a frying pan. It careened to a halt and collapsed onto the ground.
“Alright,” Y/n nodded, kicking it once with the scuff of her shoe for good measure. “Shall we get out of here?”
“Yes, please.”
♡♡♡
The three runaways were able to pull out of the driveway just as a bunch of other Men in Black vans were pulling up to the house. Tom sat behind the wheel while Sonic sported a shotgun, and Y/n crouched in the middle of the backseat with no seatbelt. Because this was living on the dark side, and on the dark side, we don’t wear seatbelts.
“Okay, so now that we aren’t running from scary doctors, what the hell is going on here?” Y/n asked, leaning forward on the console and resting her head in her hand as she turned to Sonic. He leaned his head back against the seat and sighed.
“Well, I just might have been the reason for that big power explosion… and now people after me. To make things worse, I lost my rings to a place that I’ve only ever seen on your dad’s skin tight T-shirt, and I have to make it to the Mushroom Planet or else I’m putting everyone here in danger.” He finally took in a deep gulp of air after pulling out that whole explanation in one breath. Y/n furrowed her brows in concern.
“Mushroom Planet?” Tom asked, his lips pressing into a firm line.
“You must have lost them in San Francisco,” Y/n said. Suddenly, Tom jerked the wheel to the right and pulled off to the side of the road, unlocking the doors in the process.
“Alright, get out.” Y/n and Sonic stared at him in confusion.
“I’m sorry, what?” Sonic narrowed his eyes slightly. Tom leaned forwards and opened the passenger side door for him, running a hand down his face.
“Look, this is the worst time for me to be getting into trouble with the law and my daughter doesn’t really need a track record. So, you can go off and have good luck with finding your weird little Mushroom Planet. I’ll hopefully wake up in a hospital room soon with a successful colonoscopy and a happy, totally sane teenage daughter, so goodbye.”
“What? Dad!” Y/n started to object, her blood boiling in irritation at his insensitivity. Sonic shook his head and gave her a half-hearted smile as he slipped out of the car.
“It’s okay, Y/n. Goodbye, I guess…” But instead of leaving, he just stood there. Staring. Y/n turns to stare at her father too to double the effect.
“Why aren’t you leaving?” He groaned in frustration.
“How the hell is he supposed to know where San Francisco is?” Y/n laughs, and Tom sighs in defeat, knowing that she’s right. He gives her a half-assed glare, but as usual she was refusing to back down. Sonic doesn’t notice the small smile forming on his own lips, his appreciation for this strangely familiar girl increasing with every second he spent with her.
“It’s West. Straight shot.” Tom finally tells him. Sonic nods.
“Okay. West. Cool. Cool, I’m totally cool with saying goodbye right now,” he exaggerates, swirling his gloved hands around with the hurt clearly evident on his face.
“I’m not,” Y/n grumbles, pressing her cheek against the rough leather of the driver’s seat. Before anyone could say another word, Sonic shot off in the given direction faster than the speed of sound. Y/n’s jaw drops open along with Tom’s as they look down at the spot where he once was.
“H-holy shit,” Y/n stuttered.
“D-did he just-” Tom didn’t even get to finish the sentence before Sonic came back, only this time soaking wet. He was sporting a nice fish on his head and a bunch of seaweed hanging on to his quills, which accented his sarcastic expression perfectly. Y/n tried to stifle her laughter by pouting and turning to her father as he rolled his eyes.
“So, as I crashed into the cold, dark Pacific,” Sonic began, sending a wink in Y/n’s direction. “I noticed a couple things. A, I have no idea where I’m going. B, salt water stings. And C, I shouldn’t even be on this planet right now but I am. Why? Because you shot me.” Sonic’s eyes narrowed.
“I know,” Tom sighed, turning back to the road.
“You shot me!”
“Okay, you don’t need to rub it in,” he sniffed, glancing at Y/n out of the corner of his eye. “She was there too…”
“She didn’t shoot me,” Sonic stood up for her. Y/n gave him a kind smile as he began listing off characteristics on his gloved fingers. “I’m wet, I’m cold, there’s a fish on my head, and clearly I’m not going to be able to do this on my own!” Once he finished, Y/n slowly reached out to him and pushed the fish off his head, watching as it flopped about helplessly on the ground.
“You do owe it to him,” she subtly pressed, leaning back once again in her seat. Tom stayed silent for a moment, staring firmly at the little blue hedgehog for what seemed like forever. Finally he caved and started the ignition once again.
“Fine. Get in.”
“Really?” Sonic and Y/n chimed in hopeful unison. “You’re going to help me?” He shook out his fur at such a high speed that once he finished, it poofed out like a dramaticized afro. Y/n giggled in her seat, not being able to handle how cute it was. Butterflies began to wander around in her stomach.
“I guess it is sort of my fault,” Tom hesitantly admitted.
“Actually, it’s entirely your fault,” Y/n teased. He gave her a playful shove, but snorted nonetheless. Sonic quickly climbed into the car and slammed the door shut behind him.
“Road trip!” He cheered, looking excitedly around the car. Y/n cheered along with him while still trying to shake the eerily feeling of familiarity. Tom shook his head, squeezing the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.
“What the hell am I doing with my life?”

It’s My Fault
Tumblr media
Summary: Sonic has nightmares about his past.Tom and Maddie need to figure this out.
“But… But I didn’t want it to be like this.” Sonic looked at LongClaw with tears in his eyes.The disappointment on LongClaw’s face shattered him. LongClaw bowed her head: “No one wants anything like this, but it happened. It wouldn’t have happened if you’d listened to me. You didn’t listen to me. You’re guilty. It’s your fault.” At that moment, an arrow lodged in LongClaw’s chest. Sonic was nailed to his place with dread. He turned around. It was like another scene was alive. He saw Eggman with his familiar mustache. His eyes opened in fear. He was holding a gun to Tom’s head.
“No, no! Don’t hurt him!” Tom looked at Sonic as he tried to get rid of Eggman’s clamp. He had both sadness and disappointment on his face. Just like LongClaw.
“You’re going to put this on us. You were supposed to be kept secret. You’re supposed to be stronger. You can’t use it when you have that much power. It’s all your fault.“ And all of a sudden, the explosion of the gun..
Sonic was straight in his bed in sweat. He tried to take deep breaths.He sat by the edge of his bed, covered his mouth with his hand. He was really shaken up. It’s been a few months since he started living with Tom and Maddie, and it’s been a few months since he’d had no nightmares. After all, he found himself a family, and he wasn’t alone anymore. He didn’t have to hide, at least in Green Hills. The whole town accepted him. He had everything to make him happy. He really scared when he had a nightmare like this all of a sudden. His eye slipped on the clock by his bed. 4:00 a.m. “I hope I didn’t make a sound,” he said. He didn’t want to wake Tom and Maddie up at this hour and worry. He patted his face with both hands. Just as he was going to be back in bed, he heard a scuffi on the attic stairwell. He’s been so irritable. Fortunately, it wasn’t Tom or Maddie. Ozzy stretched his head off the ceiling cover. Sonic breathed a deep, comfortable breath. Ozzy slowly came to Sonic’s bedside. That’s when Sonic pulled the bedspread on him. He stroked Ozzy’s head with his hand. Ozzy approached Sonic as if he felt it and put his chin to the bed. Sonic fell asleep slowly.
———————————————————————————————————
Maddie placed the pancakes she made in the pan on the plates. Tom walked through the kitchen door. He was wearing a Sheriff’s uniform. He was trying to tie his tie. He cheerfully came to Maddie:
“Good morning, honey.” Said. Maddie left the pan on the stove and turned to Tom. She got the tie that Tom couldn’t tie:
“Good morning, dear.” she grinned and said, “When are you going to learn to tie this up?” Tom grinned:
He said, “Why should I find out when I have a beautiful wife who can tie it up?” When Maddie finished tying the tie, Tom put a kiss on her lip. He’s headed for the fridge. He took the juice out of the fridge and started filling glasses. “Is ours awake?” Asked.
“I guess no, I haven’t been able to wake him up yet.” Tom filled the last glass: “I’ll get him. ” He put his juice back in the fridge and headed for the attic staircase. He slowly walked through the lid. Sonic’s back was covered, he pulled the cover all the way to his head. Ozzy was still right next to him. When Tom saw it, he came up with excitement, whispering, “Good morning, buddy.” He patted his face with both hands. He slowly came up to the bed and sat down. He stroked Sonic’s head with his hand. “Hey, good morning, kid. Come on, it’s time to get up,” He said without raising his voice. Sonic took a deep breath and moved in. He showed no signs of waking up. Tom leaned in his ear: “Come on, buddy, if you don’t get up now, you’re going to miss breakfast.” Sonic muttered and opened his eyes slowly. After yawning, his face turned up. Tom was smiling sincerely. But suddenly, seeing Tom in front of him scared Sonic. He just got out of bed. He breathed quickly. Tom was stunned by Sonic’s sudden movement. Normally, he wouldn’t react like that:
“Are you all right, buddy?” he asked in amazement. Sonic paused a little. He said, “I’m fine, I’m fine. Good morning,” he said with a scoured smile on his face. He quickly lifted his cover off him and got out of bed. He’s headed for the ceiling cover. Tom slowly climbed down the stairs. Sonic quickly moved to the kitchen table chair. Maddie smiled: “Good morning.” Sonic smiled and said: “Good morning.” He was going to put his hand right in pancake: “Did you wash your face and hands?“ she asked. Sonic opened his mouth and closed it again. He used his speed to leave the table immediately. Maddie giggled behind his back. Tom’s on the table. Sonic rustled again into the kitchen and sat in the chair. They all started having breakfast together. Maddie felt the stagnation at Sonic. The blue hedgehog, which is normally swallowed with pleasure, was very slow this morning. Maddie gave Tom a look. Tom swallowed and shrugged.
"Sonic?” he called out in a soft voice. Sonic stopped sewing his juice glass to his head. He looked at Tom. He saw Maddie looking at him, too. He said, “What?” with confused eyes.
“What’s wrong with you? You’re stagnant this morning. It’s not a thing,” he said. Sonic swallowed it. When he remembered last night, his face and ears fell. “I really don’t want to talk about it,” he said in a low voice. Tom and Maddie were really worried. When Sonic realized that, he said, “Don’t worry, I’m fine.” Tom raised one eyebrow: “Are you sure?”
“Yes, you don’t have to worry. Come on, let’s have a nice breakfast.” This time, he was delighted to be in pancakes. They both looked at each other and kept eating. After breakfast, Tom headed for the door. Maddie and Sonic were waiting behind him. After Tom put on his shoes, he gave Maddie a kiss. “Have a good day, be careful,” she said. Tom nodded with a smile. Sonic also smiled: See you, Donut Lord.“ Tom leaned over and stroked Sonic’s head. And then he walked out the door. Sonic immediately returned to Maddie, asking, "What are you going to do today?”
I’m practically empty today. At least as long as there’s no call,“ he said. Sonic moved excitedly:
"Then can we do yoga together?” he asked. Maddie smiled. “Sure, but promise me you won’t push yourself. You almost sprained your ankle last time.” Sonic laughed: Ok, okay, I promise,“ he laughed. Together, they laid the yoga mats on the balcony, on the floor. First, after doing some yawning moves, Maddie opened the video he used to do yoga on her laptop all the time. They started posing with slow movements. Sonic was still trying to imitate Maddie, even though he didn’t quite understand. By the time they came to the 7th pose, Sonic was getting tired. Maddie snated Sonic with her eyetips. He yawned once. She sat down smiling and asked, "Didn’t you sleep well?” Sonic was irreputed with that question. He didn’t want to remember anything about last night, but they were rightly asking. But it was true, he couldn’t say he was sleeping well.. “Yes, I suppose so.“ He rubbed his eyes when he said that.He just realized he was really tired. "Do you want to take a nap?” Maddie asked in a soft voice. Sonic nodded. They went to the living room together. “If I’d helped you pack…”
“I will take care of it, and you rest.” Sonic reached the seat, and Maddie put his seat pillow under his head. A run immediately brought a veil from the inside and covered Sonic. Sonic didn’t last long to fall asleep. Then she slowly went back to the balcony and continued her yoga. It’s been about an hour. Maddie finished her yoga, collecting her mats. She took the mats to her room. Just as she went into the bathroom to take a shower, she saw Sonic vibrate. She stared at her eyes. Sonic kept nodding. She came right by the seat. When she looked closely, she saw Sonic sweat. She knew he was having nightmare. She slowly put her hand on his head: “Hey, hey Sonic. Calm down.“ She said. Sonic started delirious, he couldn’t calm down:
"It’s not. It’s not my fault. It’s not my fault!” Maddie was a little freaked out. She began to shake Sonic slightly: “Sonic, hey! Relax, it’s okay. You’re just having a nightmare.” He seemed to feel Maddie’s hand. His tremor scarred, his breathing was arranged and slowed down. Maddie kept stroking his head. As he calmed down, he said: “I can’t lose you too. Not again…”
He’s starting to sleep calmly again. Maddie understood the cause of his early morning situation. Looks like he had a nightmare last night. He didn’t tell them not to worry. He looked very fragile as he was now. When Tom arrived, they had to have a serious conversation. She didn’t want to get up. The cause of his insomnia was obvious, and she didn’t want him to wake up while he was at situated. At the same time, she was trying to make sense of what Sonic’s delirious about. “It’s not my fault” and “I can’t lose you too.” What did it mean? Tom knew Sonic had a trauma in the past. But she couldn’t find anything to trigger this nightmare right now. She took a deep breath and kept stroking Sonic’s head. They used to argue when Tom came.
——————————————————————————————————–
It was coming to 6:00 p.m. The doorbell was ringed. Maddie slowly headed for the door and opened the door. She was up against Tom.
“Hello, honey,” he said, with a kiss on her forehead. Maddie took her index finger to her lip. Tom was irreputed. He frowned on his eyebrows. Maddie pulled out the door to get Tom to see the hall. Sonic was still sleeping on the couch. When Tom realized the situation, he nodded and slowly went in. They both went into the bedroom. Tom started knots of his shirt. Maddie spoke at the time:
“Honey, I think we have a problem.” Tom raised one eyebrow: “Did something happen?”
“We were doing yoga together, and then I realized he was tired. He said he didn’t sleep much at night. So I put him on the couch for a nap. About an hour later, he started having a nightmare.”
“What?” Tom came into the living room with a rustle. He crouched next to the seat and began stroking Sonic’s head. “Is he okay?” he asked.
“He looked pretty shaken up, he was sweating. He’s delirious.” Tom is getting nervous. He swallowed: “What did he say?”
“"It’s not my fault. I can’t lose you too. Sentences like this” Tom swallowed it:
“I think it’s old stuff. We need to talk about this. It turns out why he was stagnant in the morning.”
“He obviously saw it at night.”
“Why didn’t he wake us up?”
“He probably didn’t want to worry us”
Tom stretched his lips. “He’s been through a lot at his age. It would be ridiculous not to be impressed,” Maddie said. Tom swallowed : “Did he at least sleep?”
“He slept well after calming down.” She turned her head into the wall clock and looked at Tom again:
“I think it’s been about five hours. I’ve always been there for him.” Tom turned his face to Sonic. As Maddie said, he seemed very calm right now. His breath was tidy.
“He didn’t eat at noon then?”
“I was going to wake him up, but he was so sluggish. That’s why he didn’t eat. Are you hungry? Tom grinned: “Big time.” Maddie laughed: “Then I’ll prepare the table. We’ll pick him up soon,” She said with turned to the kitchen. Tom got off the couch and went back to his room. He changed. Sonic moved in. He opened his eyes and stood up slowly. That’s when Tom came back to the living room. When he saw Sonic awake, he smiled and immediately went to the seat, next to him. “Rise and shine, sleepy head. ” he laughed. Sonic rubbed his eyes. When he saw Tom, he smiled: “Welcome, Donut Lord.” Tom put his hand on Sonic’s head: “How are you?” Sonic paused: “I’m hungry.” Tom laughed:
“It’s natural, you’re pretty sleepy today.” Sonic stretched with his arms open. “Ugh, I’m pretty numb,” he said. He said, “If you want to take a tour and come, you’ll open it.” Sonic nodded:
“Yes, that’s a good idea.” Sonic immediately got off the seat and headed for the outside door. He opened the door and went out with rust. Tom locked his eyes on the wall clock. Sonic went back through the living room and sat on the couch. Tom twisted his lips and laughed: “Hmmm, 5 seconds.” Sonic looked at the clock. “So I toured all Green Hills in five seconds.“ Tom raised his hand in the air. Sonic laughed and banged a high-five. Maddie’s voice was heard from the kitchen:
"Hey, you two. Dinner’s ready.” Sonic ran into the bathroom using his speed and sat at the table immediately afterwards. Excitedly, he stirred up the seat:
“What’s at dinner?” he asked. Maddie smiled and placed a large tray on the table. It was full of chili-dogs. Sonic’s eyes flashed. He raised his hands in the air:
“Long live it, that’s it!” They’re all lumped in hot dogs.
After dinner, Sonic went to his room. He reached for bed and started looking at the ceiling. He was trying to figure out what his problem was. He’s been tired of having nightmares for two days, and there’s still a night. The lid of the attic was knocked . Sonic was straightinked in his bed when he heard the sound:
“Buddy? Can I come?” The voice belonged to Tom. “Of course,” Sonic said without raising his voice. The hatch opened and Tom climbed up. He smiled and came to the bed. Sonic sat on the bed by tying his legs. Tom sat next to him. Sonic looked at Tom with bewildered eyes:
“Did something happen?“ he asked.
“ I thought you’ll answer that.” Sonic stunned:
“What do you mean?”
“Last night and today, you had a nightmare.” Sonic missed his eyes and swallowed. “I was just wondering if you were okay.“
"I’m fine, really. You don’t have to worry.” He bowed his head when he said that. Tom put his hand on Sonic’s shoulder. “Are you sure? You still look shaken.” There’s been a little waiting. “Do you want to talk?” Sonic swallowed: “I’m sure you won’t like what I’m going to tell you.”
“No one likes nightmares, Sonic.” Tom put both hands on Sonic’s shoulders and made him look at him. Sonic still can’t look Tom in the eye. “Share it with me. It would be more harmful to keep it in.”
Sonic took a deep breath and began to explain:
“It’s the same nightmare as 3rd. LongClaw is standing in front of me. There’s a lot of disappointment on her face, and I can feel all her sadness.”
“LongClaw… She was the one in your world who took care of you, wasn’t she?” Sonic nodded. “Even though I wasn’t related, she raised me. Se said from the beginning, I had to hide my powers. Of course I didn’t listen. The result is clear.” He gulped. “With all the disappointment, she asks, "Why didn’t you listen to me?” I’m saying I don’t want it to be like this. And she said, “If you’d listened to me, it wouldn’t have happened. It’s all your fault.” And that’s when she gets shot in the chest with an arrow.“ Tom kept listening without changing his facial expression.
"I try to figure out what’s going on and turn around in the direction where the arrow comes from.” Sonic paused. Tom put his hand on Sonic’s back. Sonic took a deep breath again. “That’s where the scariest part of the nightmare begins. I see Eggman. He’s got his arm in his chest, and you’re in the clamp.” Tom’s eyes are clear. “Eggman’s putting a gun to your head. And I’m begging him not to hurt you. You turn your face to me and talk while you’re trying to get rid of the clamp.” He stopped again.Tom leaned over Sonic’s face: “What am I telling you?” He gulped:
“"You caused us this problem. You were supposed to be kept secret. You don’t use it even though you have that much power. It-It’s… It’s all y-your fault.” T-then h-he s-ho…“ Meanwhile, the blue sparks that Tom witnessed before began to dance on Sonic’s quills. Sonic’s breath has accelerated.Tom immediately hugged Sonic, thinking he was losing control. But the hug stretched him much more than calming Sonic. The sparks are starting to grow. Tom could feel the static electricity that was formed all over his body. He never bothered him to hurt him. He tightened up his hug. Sonic was trying to take deep breaths. Tom began to speak calmly:
Shhh, calm down. Calm your heart down. First of all, I’m sure LongClaw will never blame you. All she wanted to do was protect you.” Sonic sobbed. Tom continued to talk without loosening his hug:
“The Eggman thing, you couldn’t stop what was going on. He was a freak. I would never blame you for that. All this time, you used your powers to hide, and then you discovered your responsibility and saved us from that guy. Now you’re here with us. Everything’s fine.” Sonic tried to calm himself down again by taking deep breaths. Tom continued to speak softly:
It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault Sonic.“ Sonic whispered, "It’s not my fault.” His breath slowed down. Tom loosened his grip and separated his chest from Sonic’s face. They looked at each other. Tom smiled sincerely. “Are you feeling better?” Sonic tried to wipe his eyes out. “Yes, yes I’m fine. Thank you. “ The attic hatch was clogged and opened. Maddie climbed up. When Sonic saw Maddie coming, he turned his face to the left and pulled his nose. Maddie smiled: "It’s good to see him drain his emotions. I thought you’d cause another interruption.” Tom was surprised: “Is the electricity gone?”
“No, but the lights were sizzling. It looks like he’s normally back.” She’s approached to Sonic. She held his hands. “Are you all right, honey?” Sonic pulled meddle again. “Yes, I’m fine.”
“Good, next time you have a nightmare, come right next to us, okay? It’s a relief to talk.”
“Okay, I just didn’t want to worry you.”
“We know, but come no matter what. We’re a lot more worried about you being upset. We love you very much,” she hugged Sonic. Tom hugged from the other side. Sonic responded to their hugs and said: “I love you so much. And please, don’t leave me.”
“If you don’t want to, never.“ Tom said. They were wrapped up for a while. All of Sonic’s happy energy was back. He knew he wasn’t alone anymore. At the same time, he knew that it wasn’t his fault…

Sonic: The Hedgehog (2020)
Tumblr media
Sonic: The Hedgehog (2020)
Greeting my flock of film freaks and welcome again to the Cult of Cult. Todays offering is a bit more of the mainstream blockbuster variety, but as films based on Video Games are still actually quite niche and vastly underestimated I think we should open our hearts to Sonic: The Hedgehog and hope that we find it a pleasing tithe to the cult. I am your beloved minster, The Reverend Chainsaw, and welcome to today’s service.
The Message
I must confess to the congregation that I was drinking mighty heavily of the lord’s Tennessee sour mash when I was taking in this movie. That said, I think that this is a great movie to have a drink with and I mean that in the best possible way.
Sonic: The Hedgehog is of course based on the Sega video game franchise and stars Ben Schwartz as the titular blue rat. Schwartz brings his brand of high energy enthusiastic comedy to the voice role. While Schwartz is particularly on brand for Schwartz, is he on brand for Sonic? I’m not entirely sure, but I’m also not entirely sure I was ever in love with the old ways. I am not an avid fan or consumer of Sonic media and perhaps that means I am in a poor position to say. I am most familiar with the Sega games and Sonic cartoons from the 90s, and from what I have grasped the more recent entries with their more anime centric and high lore plots still owe quite a bit to the attitude era of the 90s. Sonic was a hero but he was also a bit of a cross between Mickey Mouse, the Flash, and Bart Simpson. As an angsty 90s boy I wanted to eat chili dogs and go very fast that was very appealing to me, but I’m not so sure it would be appealing to a vast audience of older millennials, or even todays kids. And though I think it would be a fair criticism to say that Ben Schwartz is playing sonic as basically the superhero version of his Dewey Duck from the VERY VERY good DuckTales reboot, I don’t think that it’s necessarily a bad thing.
Dewey Duck the Hedgehog is a small mammal (also not a rodent, I wanted to say rodent and apparently hedgehogs are not rodents, just googled it) from an alien planet where his adoptive mother, an owl named Long Claw, fears that he will be hunted for his special powers, which I think is just super speed but it might be other things. In line with these concerns after an attack by pursuers Longclaw gives Sonic the Moses treatment and floats the special blue boy down the metaphorical river. Unlike Moses, however, Sonic is not found by ultra rich ultra powerful extra special people but is instead alone. Sonic lives alone in exile outside a small American town as a sort of local cryptid.
Thus begins a charming adventure. Through a poor decision to use his powers while working out some personal issues, Sonic inadvertantly draws the attention of the U.S Government and their nasty big brain baddy Dr. Robotnik. Sonic recruits a small town police officer with big city dreams to assist him in finding his magic rings so that he might flee from earth to an uninhabited mushroom kingdom.
Now about these two human characters. Officer Everyman is played by cyclops from the X-men franchise. The actors name escapes me and so does the characters, and while, yes, I just looked up if hedgehogs were rodents, I will not be looking up this information. I like the review better this way. It makes me laugh. And while I don’t remember his name, I do remember that he used to live In Mt. Juliet, TN.  Anyway, what you should know about Officer Goodguy is that he drives a Toyota Tacoma!
That Toyota Tacoma is also continuously abused by the mad machinations of our films biggest draw: Jim Carey as Dr. Robotnik. If we were to pitch a Sonic movie, I don’t think anyone would jump to Jim Carey as the must have for the role, but after seeing this film, boy was it the best choice. The way he chews the scenery and plays off the rest of the cast and situations is just so much fun to watch. It’s fantastic to see Jim Carey back in a larger than life role. The Decision to play Jim Carey as the kind of condescending nerd who has taken their lack of social skills and leaned in as opposed to working on themselves was a brilliant choice. We’ve all known that kind of guy who tries to play the misanthrope just because they are too egotistical to recognize their flaws. Here Dr. Robotnik has given up on human connection in favor of subordination. His intellect is his only value, and thus he demands everyone around him acknowledge intellect as the only quality that matters as he has. It was a great choice.
From the point the chase begins the film becomes a road trip flick, and despite the fact that Sonic could supposedly cover the distance required in the blink of an eye we watch the ins and outs of our heroes relationship as they learn what home, and being a hero mean to them. By the climax it is pretty by the numbers, Sonic has come to feel at home on Earth and now that he has friends who care for him they can begin to make a world from which neither will have to flee; and of course, they beat the bad guy. FOR NOW. we are treated to an even crazier Dr. Robotnik stranded in the Fungus Dimension bent on revenge.
The Benediction
Now for all things Holy and Profane in this film, please rise for the Benediction.
Best Scandal: Sonic the Cosmic Horror
The original look of this film was mired in dread when the early footage and trailers dropped revealing a hideously uncanny hedgehog monster in the form of sonic. The memes are amazing, the toys are unsettling, there’s still plenty of Quasimodo Sonic stuff out there floating on the web and I suggest that you search it out, the laughter is good for your heart. Also if anyone wants to send me any creepy sonic merch I’ll take it.
Thanks to the work of online fans and internet harassments, the studio felt it was going to lose money on the project and reeled back the release allowing for the design department to give us a more cartoony but less frightening alien monster. I mean he’s a cartoon, it’s okay for him to look like a cartoon.
Best Scene: Noodle Dance
It’s hard to choose, and it feels a bit biased, but there are a few scenes with Dr. Robotnik that are just what make the movie more than a forgettable IP adaptation. Not that Ben Schwartz wasn’t doing great as the character but I feel Sonic as a whole would be lost in the milieu of CG spectacles and Super Hero Origin stories that we are bombarded with every year if not for Jim Carey’s performances; and even with them Sonic: The Hedgehog is not completely out of those woods. That said, I think Dr. Robotnik’s Alone Time Dance Party has to be the stand out sequence in my memory. I can’t really speak to what makes it so enjoyable, but damn if it isn’t just the best scene in the movie.
Best Character: Silicon Valley Dr. Robotnik
Do I even need to say it? It’s Dr. Robotnik. I’m not a fan of this villain from any other media. I always found Dr. Robotniks look unappealing, I’m not a huge fan of his powers, or using robot henchman. it always struck me as pretty boring how Sonic didn’t have a cool rogues gallery (i’m talking about 90s sonic) the way Mario did. However, they did something with the design, characterization, and performance that just made him such a fun villain. Also, my friend Jacksons mom said I looked like him and it didn’t hurt my feelings so.
Best Actor: Jim Carey
Jim Carey. It really seems like he’s all I’m talking about in this movie. Once again, I think Ben Schwartz did great and Sonic IS basically Dewey Duck in this movie. Dewey Duck is my favorite part of the rebooted DuckTales series, BUT he is just outmaneuvered by Jim Carey in this role. I think it’s a compliment enough to say that Ben Schwartz was even able to keep up with his energy, let alone play his quicker perkier foil.
Worst Scene: Toyota Tacoma Commercial
Sonic: the Hedgehog’s worst scene would probably have to be the forced friend fight between Sonic and Officer Wachowski  during the car chase. It’s an overproduced weightless car chase scene with a contrived buddy cop controversy meant to force apart our heroes so that they can ultimately grow a little and come back together later in the movie. Not that I mind a movie like this to be so by the numbers, but it just felt like two of the blandest things on this movies plate being forced into one scene. I do like the idea of giving me the crap part of the dish in one flavorless generic bite, but that still doesn’t save it from being the worst scene in the movie.
That Toyota Tacoma took a beating though.
Worst Feature: Nothing Ventured/ Nothing Earned
I’m sure many fans would feel that the worst feature of the film is that it isn’t loyal to any previous lore laden version of the character, (probably the one they like the most). In the portrayals of both Sonic and Dr. Robotnik there were decisions made that drastically differed from the ways they have been portrayed before. Sonic is naïve and idealistic, a bit childish, Dr. Robotnik is driven by a lot of insecurity. Where are the Chaos Crystals and my original character Grindy the Wolf Cub?
But I think that these are over all positive choices in a film that otherwise chose to play it incredibly safe. In their cautious approach to appeal to the widest possible audience the film makers gave us a pleasant and appealing cartoon romp but we are left with little to hold on to. The worst feature of Sonic: The Hedgehog is it’s safety.
Summary:
Sonic: The Hedgehog is often touted as “the first good video game movie”. A label that I disagree with wholeheartedly. It is certainly a good video game movie, but it’s not the first, and it is not by leaps and bounds better than other video game movies as a whole. It’s a sub genre that gets a ton of disrespect, and in a world where the biggest criticism levied against the Super Mario Bros is that it’s not a faithful adaptation, I don’t understand how Sonic the Buddy Cop/ Road Trip comedy is escaping that attitude.
All that said, I had a good time with this movie. But it felt like playing on the playground as a toddler. You have fun and then you leave and you don’t really remember what you played or who with. I’ll think about Jim Carey and Dewey Duck, but I had a hard time hating or loving anything this movie did in any strong way. I usually feel that a movie that is “bad” or “corny” or “shlocky” is always better than a movie that is generic, or pointless, or boring. Sonics pleasantness and cheerful energy just barely save it from being another Transformers franchise. I get that origin stories are hard, so I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment, and hopefully it’s going to do something that sets it apart. Probably not.
Overall Grade: C
James Marsden! I just remembered!
