A star is born 🌟
I just had to redesign Hera’s fertility goddess form. In all ways possible, I wanted her to be opposite of Kronos, hence the total makeover.
I based her color palette off of a neutron star! Neutron stars are technically dead stars and she was “dead” there for a minute so I figured that would go hand in hand.
Hope you like my redesign (click for better resolution) ✨

𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐯𝐬. 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐯𝐚 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐬 (𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬)
Whether or not you're all familiar with the Webcomic, Lore Olympus is an award-winning comic created by Rachel Smythe that's essentially about a modern retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth with various other Gods and references in it, and what not. And, assuming you have a critical eye when it comes to writing, it's has become wildly disliked and even hated by a lot of critics and former fans due to the butchering of myths and gods (and a religion), unlikeable characters, poor character design, poorer handling of sensitive topics like SA and racism, and overall the author's inability to listen and take critism that would've helped her improve.
youtube
The reason I bring this up at all is because I have the nagging fear that Helluva Boss and, by extension, Hazbin Hotel, are going to be doomed to fall into the same pit of failure as Lore Olympus is, mainly due to a nagging pattern that I've noticed between the two:
The Writers. The two are relatively close in age and, in my opinion, immaturity in writing as evidenced by the various plot inconsistencies, character treatment and development, and poor world-building established in both media. On top of that, however, both have a significantly bad reception to criticism of their work in any way, shape, or form. We've seen this before in how Viv herself states that she's been told that she can't take criticism well since she was 17.
Tumblr media
Now, it's one thing to have these claims as a teenager, it's another to have them as a fully grown adult and not learn to mature past this issue by now. The number one issue with ignoring criticism for so long, especially in your very popular work, is that eventually, it's going to show. Sooner or later, many of your fans, regardless of how they felt about your work prior, are gonna notice small flaws that gradually become bigger and more glaring the longer they are ignored.
Time and time again, this issue has arisen in Rachel Smythe's work, both in design:
As well as writing...
Speaking of which, I'm beginning to see a similarity in their writing issues in the fact that, evidently, neither creator had/has any set plan for how their stories are gonna be told. Readers of LO have seen that from the frequent additions of various, random plots with the previously established plots having not been concluded in a meaningful or tactful way, and we see this with Vivzie and Season 2.
Going off this, both Vivzie and Smythe show blatant favoritism towards their main characters or love interests that prevent other characters from having their own development (i.e., Millie), as well as keeps the main couple from having any sort of flaws that the audience would perceive as truly bad, thus removing any nuance to them.
We see this in Persephone and her character:
And we see the same with Stolas and Blitzo, mainly in regards to Stolas' past and situation with Stella, as well as Blitzø's own past as we're made to constantly feel bad for him despite him not being the victim. It's made worse since we've yet to know what he did to every single person he's wronged, but, for that, I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt until we see more of Season 2.
Lastly, and probably the most glaring thing for me, both Smythe and Vivize take inspiration from real-world religions (RS –> Greek Polytheism; Vivzie –> Christianity/Demonology). These religions are both widespread in their popularity and, thus, are important to millions around the world. Because of this, both should surely have a sense of obligation to not bastardize the stories and characters they referenced in their work and/or should make their likeness relatively similar to their original works so others who know of it are familiar with the characters.
Both creators have failed to do so at some point in time and have gone so far as to push the blame on their audience rather than admit fault and work to improve.
Viv with Beelezbub
Tumblr media
And Smythe with Persephone and the other gods/Goddesses:
Worst yet, both use social media as a means of weaponizing their fanbase against those who have a few critiques about each work of media. Now, what I can say for Viv is that the severity of these issues hasn't fully hit her yet, whereas Smythe, despite her awards, is feeling the brunt of her poor writing choices from former fans and readers. While Helluva Boss is more new and doesn't hold as much overwhelming significance to me, I've been with Hazbin Hotel since the beginning before the pilot even aired.
It's because of this that my greatest concern is that if Viv doesn't start seeing through these issues within Helluva Boss and, really, herself, then both shows may be doomed to fail, without Hazbin airing in its entirety. Worse yet, it would be a major blow for fellow indie creators who look up to her as an inspiration, so I really hope she doesn't reach RS's level of infamy in her work. 🙏
*PS: For a better Lore Olympus's viewing experience, I recommend this:

I really don’t like how one demential Stella is from helluva boss. She has the potential to be a really interesting complex character but is watered down to be a mean wife with zero development
I also don’t like how the show and the fans justify stolas’s cheating.
It’s terrible that he was forced to take part in an arranged marriage and that even though he made an effort to at least have a platonic or cordial relationship with Stella—
That she rebuffed his efforts and was a total asshole to him.
But no one deserves to be cheated on. I really hate how with a lot of media these days….characters both in canon and fandoms are written as black and white and aren’t given proper layers. And I think fandoms have ruined that. Like, you can still like a terrible character while acknowledging that they’re a terrible person without making shitty excuses for them
You can hate/ dislike a bad character without justifying all the terrible things that happened to them. I think the problem is ppl will give their faves or protagonist the benefit of the doubt or give them grace but characters we’re supposed to hate, that are written as bad, don’t deserve grace and patience and understanding
For some characters that’s true….some characters don’t deserve sympathy some characters don’t deserve redemption
But there’s a proper way to write it and I feel like creators and fans are missing that
Some of y’all already know how I feel about lore Olympus
It does a bad job of writing complex characters and holding the “bad” ones to a higher standard. So much so it backfires.
Minthe is one of the characters that was done SO dirty and was only put there to be an obstacle for hxp same as Demeter.
Minthe cheating on hades? Bad! Persephone persuing hades even after discovering he was already in an official relationship? That’s okay!
Because she’s our main protagonist! She’s nice! And not mean like that b*tch minthe!
Zeus cheating on Hera multiple times, with different women for decades? Bad! Zeus is a womanizing jerk who ditched his kids and mistreats his wife!
Hera cheats on Zeus by having an on again off again affair for freaking decades!?! That’s okay! Bc we love Hera! She supports hxp! She’s trying to set them up! She feels bad for poor poor hades! She’s constantly mistreated by her husband so that’s okay
Stolas was mistreated by Stella who was and is a terrible spouse but that doesn’t justify his cheating. I do feel bad for him sometimes. It sucks that the physical relationship he had for blitzo turned emotional and that he started having romantic feelings for him, only to get rejected time and time again. Stolas isn’t an entirely bad character we see multiple sides of him, he loves his daughter, he cares about blitzo he tried to do right by Stella. But even good characters can still do bad things.
And I don’t wanna hear “well they’re In hell lol 🤪” especially since we’ve seen multiple how monogamy and marriage are treated in this show. If the show is addressing how important it is..then it matters. If it didn’t it wouldn’t…..
It would’ve been nice to see that development and care be put into Stella instead of the classic hateful wife/spouse….

thing i hate most on the internet is the way people talk about art. i remember back in the day when i was watching steven universe critics and a lot of the critique was like "characters change in size inconsistently frame to frame, there's weird poses, its very unprofessional" , or generally i guess people behave when anything drawn is posted. a good example I think is Lore Olympus, if anyone even remembers that, and how the critic community has basically torn it apart for a barrage of valid reasons, and then started attacking the art.
"rachel cant be asked to be [insert idea of good art], rachel doesnt care enough to [difficult technique who's difficulty may be amplified by the artstyle of the artist]. The color theory is all wrong, the lines, the sizes, faces, hair, proportions," etc.
and i was sitting there basically like that comic of the insult deflecting back at me off the art itself, which does not care but the regular people seeing the critique will now suddenly feel like there are eyes watching for mistakes in their art, and in turn their own eyes become more critical. they will watch out for every mistake.

No, but like think about someone so maternal and loving being forced to bear a child who will almost certainly die.
I’m here for my girls Demeter, Thetis, and Andromache and that’s pretty much it. It’s fine we can fight about it.

Moderately concerned about Persephone having a biochem class as a freshman(even if I don't know what the fuck biochem theory is even supposed to be. Why is she not just taking regular biochem?)
Thank goodness she stopped going to school for...whatever the fuck her major was early in this series because even biochem as an upperclassman is a pain in the ass, and I can only imagine what other high level classes this university throws at poor, unsuspecting freshmen right out the gate if they're throwing those bastards in biochem the very first semester

"I want to live" and "sacrifice, of the self or of others" are not themes that require one to be built upon another, but are instead longitudinally related rather than laterally in baldur's gate 3; they support each other rather than detract from one another. in this essay I will-
#baldur's gate 3#bg3#baldurs gate 3#baldurs gate iii#baldur's gate iii#the theming is quite obvious if you think about it for 0.2 seconds but I have a lot of opinions on the usage of both themes#trying to critique that which the game does rather than what it does not#'you should play undertale' a friend told me as I feverently discussed why 'I want to live' is a stronger motif than that of 'sacrifice'#lo and behold they are not necessarily supposed to oppose each other but drive each other#congrats I initially fell for the mask the game puts up#still not finished with one run of the game but it's fine enough getting into the weeds of the motifing of the game since it's not hidden#also slowly constructing tav and durge as characters (not as player inserts/ocs) and getting ready for a thesis on them as well#rex rambles#tbh I personally prefer to view the game under the lens of 'I want to live' since the musical identity of the companions#is literally echoed throughout the camp but I digress. if you end up trying to use I want to live as a base for sacrifice in a lateral way#it doesn't capture what the game story is trying to express. on the flip side treat g the game solely as a game of sacrifices#guts the very real theme of I want to live that is EVERYWHERE#hence they support each other#I have opinions on this and how these themes affect the companions. but I need to finish one run first lmao#like I said. obvious theming is obvious and I'm sure with a game as large as this this is not the only post with this same exact take#also don't ask me too much about the 5e world building bc I am not very strong in dnd world building but I can attempt litcrit#that is contained within the story. so if I every lit crit bg3 I take what is contained in the story rather than the larger dnd 5e canon

You cannot tell me after this episode that P isn’t a Mary Sue… It took 6 gods years to defeat Kronos yet she was able to do it all herself? Also where did those reporters come from - literally everyone was asleep in the Underworld.

Friendly reminder to both the Lore Olympus Stans and the Antis:
Persephone’s hair growth has nothing to do with her stress
Tumblr media
i.e., she can grow it out whenever she likes and it is not tied to her emotions. I think @genericpuff had a post that talked about this but after reading the comments under the most recent episode, I wanted to reiterate.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Rewrites and redesigns of Hera and Morpheus bc they deserve it.
Hera, at least how I’ve done her here, is very Emma Frost inspired in her attitude and outfit. She used to be even more luxuriously golden, but she’s faded a little, notably in her skin, due to the state of her mental health, due to Kronos and other factors. I also gave her green eyes instead of blue to reflect her infamous jealous streak.
Morpheus deserves so much better than what RS gives her lmao so I completely overhauled her. She’s like an old Hollywood movie star, almost ten feet tall and is thoroughly unbothered by everything. Hades is scared of her. Her wings only emerge when she’s about to fuck someone up, otherwise appearing as a part of her hat. I also snuck a few poppies, her other symbol, in there.

Yes, thought-crime isn't, and shouldn't ever be, real. That just means the government can't criminalize you for thoughts you've only had in your head & not carried out into action though, it doesn't mean that every single thought you voluntarily and consciously* choose to have is all fine and dandy, morally speaking. Something not being a crime (and it being nigh impossible and generally an all-around terrible idea to even *attempt* to criminalize) ≠ said thing being morally correct or even morally neutral.
You're legally allowed to have opinions that are morally wrong. I'm legally allowed to judge you and call you out for it. I might even say it to your face. It might even hurt your feelings.
(*intrusive thoughts being a thing that exists)

I think my biggest problem with the unironic use of film bro is its evolution into a critique of the films and not the bros themselves and their misunderstanding of the pieces and idolization of the violent men being critiqued in said films.
