Little Black Cat

“Shhh shh be careful.” Hushed voices drifted out from the closed bed hangings. “No, not like that.” What in the world? He opened the curtains hesitantly. Inside, Sirius was sitting facing away from him, hands clasps in his lap. Remus blushed and dropped the curtains quickly.

“Oh sorry Padfoot, I didn’t, I—“ he stammered out.

“Get in here, Moony.” His best friend called out. Remus blushed even further but before he could think too much about it an arm reached out of the curtains and pulled him in by his tie.

“Wha—?”

“Look at it.” Sirius’ voice was a whisper. Remus warily looked into his best friend’s lap and startled. There, struggling to climb out of his lap was a little black cat.

“Padfoot! Where did you find it?” He asked in wonder as he stretched his hand out and watched the cat arch its back into the touch.

“He was out by the forest all alone, he must have run away from home. Can we keep him?” He looked up at Remus with that look that Remus really couldn’t say no to.

“I suppose we can,” he mused, scratching the top of the cat’s head now. “Just for a bit.”

“Oh Moony, I love you.” Remus smiled though his heart was breaking.

Little Black Cat

(Continued from Persephone, in which Sirius and Remus are cat-sitting the Potters' cat)

Padfoot was lying on the rug in front of the fire. He was trying not to be territorial, he really was, but seeing Remus petting the little black cat sparked a jealousy that he couldn't really explain.

Persephone poked her head out from behind the sofa and peered at Padfoot warily. Remus watched them from the doorway. Padfoot turned to him, wagging his tail. Remus sat down and Padfoot went over to him, nosing into his lap.

Tentatively, Persephone climbed onto the sofa. She eyed Padfoot, whose eyes were half closed while Remus scratched his ears. Remus watched both of them as Persephone, nose quivering, gave Padfoot a cursory sniff. Padfoot nudged her a little with his head and she gave a small meow. She sniffed him more thoroughly, and he submitted to the scrutiny.

"Well, it looks like you two are friends now." Remus said, smiling at the two animals.

This tiny gray cat showed up in our backyard and we were like oh shes so small she must be a little baby kitten, we have to help her, so we got her inside and took her to the vet and they were like nope. no she has all her adult teeth. shes just small. she's literally just that small.
