summary: being with sukuna is like riding a seesaw. good thing his sweet, younger brother, yuji, is there to hear about your problems and be a shoulder to lean on. too bad you don't feel the same for him.

a/n: a part two! i wanted to continue with the band au thing that I wrote about in the first part. i was rewatching victorious and oml jade and beck is kinda of what i picture y/n and sukuna being like (but like more intense). song used is "you don't know me" by Elizabeth gillies (the actress for jade) (here's the link)

warning(s): mentions of toxic relationship, sexual acts!!, leading on (mostly on yuji's part), one-sided feelings (again on yujis part I'm sorry bb), mentions of manga characters not yet introduced in the anime (yorozu and kashimo hajime)

"I told you that I don't want you talking to her anymore! She keeps fucking flirting with you, and I don't like it!" you yell at Sukuna, and like always he rolls his eyes at your antics. Scoffing, you cross your arms and wait for Sukuna to say something, anything at this point to ease your worries.

"Yeah, and I fucking told you that you're overreacting. Yorozu's always like that," he replied, his face pulled into a nasty scowl, his eyes narrowing into a cold gaze. His words do little to ease your anger (or worry) and cause more rage to flare in you.

"Are you fucking kidding me? That's it? That's your excuse for her basically fucking herself on you the entire night?!" you scoff. You think back to how this whole fight started, and a deep pit at the bottom of your stomach starts to form.

Why hadn't you listened to your friends? They knew the type of guy Sukuna was and they warned you about getting involved with him. How someone like him would never allow himself to be tied down to one girl. How he wasn't "boyfriend" material at all.

And they were right. Even though your relationship with Sukuna had evolved past that of a one-night stand to the point where you'd see each other for dinner or even movies, that didn't stop him from basking in the attention of other girls, Yorozu specifically.

Ugh, you hated her the moment that Sukuna had introduced the two of you. The boom of the music that always filled you with a rush of adrenaline and energy seemed to dull as your eyes landed on the girl who clutched onto Sukuna's arm and pushed her boobs into his frame. Her love-sick eyes that always followed him and that ugly high-pitched laugh of hers set off something ugly in you.

The sound of the door opening makes the two of you turn. Yuji walks through the door, his gym bag slung on his shoulder and hair a little matte with sweat. His tired figure seemingly brightens up the second his eyes fall on you, and he's smiling oh-so sweetly at you. It doesn't last long as he notices how there are tears pricking the ends of your eyes and how your arms are crossed in anger.

He's quick to put his gym bag down, head over to you, and place a hand on the small of your back. "You ok? Did Sukuna say something rude to you?" he asks, his voice and eyes filled with nothing but sincere worry and softness.

Sukuna's quick to scoff, and before he knows it, he shoves Yuji away from you. "She's fucking fine," he spits out. Without another word, he turned on the ball of his feet and headed towards his room. His door-slamming echoes throughout the apartment, and with him gone, you finally let your tears fall.

Strong, warm arms are quick to wrap around you as you let your head lean on Yuji's shoulder. Small hiccups leave your lips as Yuji whispers sweet nothings into your ears and rubs comforting circles into your back. "I-I just need to go. I'm sorry, Yuji," you say and quickly step out of his arms and grab your bag from the couch.

"I'm always here for you if you need anything," the pink-haired boy says, and there's a strange tug at your heart. A small and quick 'thanks' is all you can muster before rushing out and away from the apartment.

"You think you're so funny, huh?" Sukuna sneers at you, his eyes glaring down into yours as he holds your wrists together. His leg pushes between your thighs, and a whimper falls from your lips as you feel the familiar hot warmth pulse throughout your body.

"Do-Don't know what you're ta-talking 'bout," you manage to say, lying straight to Sukuna's face. It seems you both know that you're lying, and he lets out a deep chuckle as he lowers his lips to bite into your shoulder. A yelp escapes your lips before you try to hold back a moan.

"Really? So, you weren't throwing yourself on Kashimo like some slut?" Sukuna says back. Your eyes narrow into a glare as your gaze meets his. You can feel his boner pressing into your thigh, and you hate how you can feel yourself getting wet.

"Fuck you," you spit at him, and he laughs again.

"That's the plan, darling."

"Are you sure you are good to go on, y/n? You look like shit," Shoko says, a cig hanging from her lips. A puff of smoke follows, and you grimace as you try to wave it away from you.

"I'm good. Just kinda tired," is all you say, and Shoko doesn't look entirely impressed with your answer. She sighs before putting her cig out and holding your hand in hers.

"Maybe it's time you put an end to whatever you have with Sukuna," she whispers quietly enough so that Satoru and Suguru don't hear it (even though you're pretty sure they're listening in anyway since they, too, are worried about you). And you hate how she says it, "whatever." Shit, you hate that it accurately sums up the relationship between you and Sukuna. Because, in truth, you don't know what you and Sukuna are anymore. You two argue, you fuck, you go out to parties together and then go back to arguing. You don't remember ever having fun together like you did in the beginning. Instead, you've gotten so used to your routine that you've begun looking forward to what happens sometimes after you argue.

How when Yuji comes back to the apartment, and you and Sukuna are in the middle or nearing the end of a yelling match, he'll whisk you away and look at you with those love-filled eyes. How he'll tell you some stupid story that happened to him and his friends, or how he'll take you to the nearby ice cream shop in hopes that it'll cheer you up. How your heart feels much heavier every time you say goodbye to him, and you catch a glimpse of his red, rosy cheeks.

You know that Yuji likes you, but not in a friendly way. No, that he genuinely wants to be in Sukuna's place. He wants to treat you so much better than his older brother does. And you know he would, but you simply can't feel the same for him. No matter how much ice cream you eat or how many stories he tells you, your heart doesn't beat the same for him as it does for Sukuna. And you feel so incredibly guilty about how you let him take you away from your big-bad-scary 'whatever' and act like the two of you are together.

With a huff, you stand up and down the rest of your drink before smiling back at your bandmates. "It's almost time for us to go on."

How fucking shameless can Sukuna be? you think as your gaze sweeps the crowd and lands on him and his friends. Uraume (who you actually like and you think likes you back) is bobbing their head to the beat of the current song while Mahito cheers wildly (he's so wasted) and Hajime is sipping on his drink, and of course, Yorozu is wrapped all around Sukuna.

His eyes aren't on her, though. No, they're staring straight back into yours, and you hate how, after all this time, it still sends a shiver down your spine. The world seems to fade away as you finish the last line of the song, and you're turning to bandmates. "We're doing the new one," is all you say, and they're quick to grin back at you and follow your request.

Your grip on the mic tightens as you push your hair out of your face, a flush rising on your neck. The crowd seems to roar even louder.

Sukuna shoves Yorozu off his arm as he takes a couple steps forward. There's a smirk growing on his face as your eyes meet again, and there's an ugly but warm pleasure that spreads throughout your body.

And the longer that you stay, the ice is melting And the pain feels okay, it feels okay, hey

You think back to all your arguments with Sukuna, and for a second, you wonder if that's what love really is. Is it supposed to leave you feeling overwhelmed and enraged to the point where you feel too addicted to that same feeling? Well, whatever you think. Maybe it's not supposed to feel that way to other people, but to you and Sukuna, that's what makes the two of you work.

All the pain and yelling is what keeps your hearts beating for one another, and maybe it's toxic and not right. But who cares.

Maybe you're both messed up to keep 'whatever' going on, destroying one another and then rebuilding one another through sex. Maybe you're more messed up for dragging poor, innocent Yuji into your hideous cycle. For making him think that perhaps one day you'll wake up and throw yourself into his arms.

Poor Yuji, having feelings for someone who already seems to be taken by his cruel older brother. He watches you sing your heart out and shine so beautifully that he knows the flush on his cheeks isn't from the alcohol. He notices that your eyes always seem to go back to the same spot, and as he turns his head, his heart drops as he sees Sukuna standing there, his cheeks flushed a deep red and grin now replacing his smirk.

He watches the spark grow brighter between the two of you, and every nerve in his body tells him to leave. But he can't, not when he starts to see a love-filled grin start to spread on your face.

His heart seems to come back to life as it beats faster while he watches you perform. Someone bumps into him, and then he's brought back to the reality that your gaze and grin aren't directed at him.

Okay, now I'm thinking of Jade x Huai, which I've decided to call "HuaiJade" because it kinda sounds like "why Jade" and I think that's funny. So, I propose an AU. This takes place before Kitana decides to court Kung Lao, so Kitana, Jade, and Huai haven't met yet.

Lao visits Huai during the early stages of her pregnancy, and Huai, being hormonal and stressed out of her mind, breaks down and tells him everything.

Lao immediately decided to get her out of there, but where? He's pretty sure the clan would go knocking on everybody's door trying to get her back and knows they wouldn't stop until she was returned. He needs to find a place as far away as possible, somewhere she'll be safe. But he can't think of a place that fits that criteria-- then he remembers Kitana owes him a favor. Maybe it's too much to ask, but it's worth a shot.

Kitana is sympathetic to Huai and takes her in without a second thought. She is somewhat appalled that Lao thought he needed to cash in a favor for something like this.

She quickly gets Huai a room and clothes, assigning Jade to guard and guide her. Jade, still disliking Kung Lao at this point, argues this, but Kitana puts her foot down.

At the end of the first month, Huai asks Jade to shave her head. She doesn't completely trust her with her hair, but she can't keep living with such a permanent reminder of her suffering. Huai discovers she prefers having shorter hair.

Months pass, and Jade and her get closer until Huai is comfortable leaving the palace. As the two walk through the capital, Jade starts to think. Jade hasn't ever had any desire to travel, she's always been content staying in one place and severing Kitana, but... the way Huai's eyes shine with awe, smiling softly at what Jade considers mundane, makes her feel some type of way.

Also in this AU Jin would be born and raised in Outworld.

eeeeeeeeeee I love this!

Jade and Huai are both very similar characters in a kot of ways (resilient but with a preference for softness) and that just sounds like such a cute romance for them to have!

Also, Jin being raised in Outworld is one of my fave hcs for him (I know he lived there for a bit in canon but idk how long it was meant to be so I like to think it was a very long time) so I love the idea of him becoming Outworld nobility and just not mentioning that to any of the kombat kids until they're on mission and he takes them to see his family and everyone is shocked when the "family home" is the literal palace

Plus, Jade being so jaded (pun intended) and learning to love life again through Huai is adorable and Huai learning to feel safe again through Jade is so good

Aisha is such a good choice !! She was so underrated much like Tecna I feel and she was so mistreated in later seasons it’s actually crazy how they got away with it 💀 My personal faves were Flora and Musa mostly because people told me I reminded them of those two growing up ! <3

For the BRATZ my fave was and will always be Jade, for the Totally Spies I think it would be Alex because I related to her so much growing up, for Monster High it’s definitely Jinafire Long and Clawdeen and finally amongst all the Barbie movies I’d say both Mariposa and Elina ( I even had a doll of her that I loved so so much ) 🌺 !

Mandy is freaking hilarious to be honest and since I’m French, the French version just makes it even better her voice is literally iconic !

You’re totally right about that Barbie diaries movie I haven’t watched it in a long time but I remember having such good memories about it <3 ! THE NUTCRACKER BARBIE MOVIE IS ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT YOU GOT TASTE !! Another one that I feel like is super underrated is Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus, it was soooo good but I never hear anyone talking about it </3 🌺

dweller of bamboo grooves - the first few notes are soooo so so so so nice i remember hearing this a lot running around chenyu vale i love it so much and those notes are so addicting actually

the rime of the ancient bargemen - don't even need to explain myself for this one but this is by far my favorite of the bamboo raft songs

guhua's legacy - so majestic i love her i love the subtle majesty and power behind this whole track

xuanlian's wavering light and night's whispering breath - SONGS THAT MAKE ME LOSE MY FUCKING MIND. THE VOCALIZATIONS. HELLO. ZIYU CHE I'M ALMOST CERTAIN THAT IS YOU THANK YOU FOR FUCKING DELIVERING AS ALWAYS THE ONLY CRIME IS HOW SHORT THIS IS. i also really like fujin's chant which is basically the more vocalized version of this but i think i prefer this instrumental version more. UPDATE: looks like it was actually composed by one of the newer hoyo-mix folks, yang lee :O but the vocals were indeed ziyu che hehe

into the yonder and water - reminds me a lot of xianyun since it played in her web event hhhhhh i definitely had it on repeat a lot when i first heard it <3

jade chimes - UGHHDIASFUFDSDFHFDHJHD literally shaking crying throwing up listening to this i am OBSESSED with how it builds and when it gets to the subtle vocalizations in the back oh my gooddddd oh my fucking god. its like neath the fountain but in different font i don't know what it is about these kinds of tracks that just fucking GET ME was almost gonna make this my teapot theme but this is a song that needs to be savored and appreciated in complete stillness it needs my full undivided attention. easily an all time favorite EASILY she sits at the table with neath the fountain and chatter between roots and all the others i listed that one time.

dusk's descent - I kinda glossed over this on my first listen but I'm bringing it back on because holy fuck once it builds!!!!! so good

when the herb fades - i absolutely adore baizhu/changsheng's theme always very much welcome another rendition of it

I'm not sure if you have any specific characters you'd like to read about, so I'll mention some of my favorite writers!!

alright so. first things first. if you haven't read I've become the villain's lover! yet I urge you to do so because it's so good. genuinely I think about it constantly. the manhwa tropes for each dorm leader fit so well and are delightfully cliche to read about, definetly one of my faves!! Liya is super sweet too and her writing deserves all the love!!

if you'd like some good soulmates au with Jade then check A human myth of red out! even if soulmates aus are not your cup of tea (as they aren't much of mine either) I still reccomend it, Aqua's writing is wonderful and all of the inner reflections and break of expectations accompany Jade's character so well!

DREW'S WRITING OMG. this Cater roommates au is AMAZING. GIVE IT A READ!!! Cater is soooo in character and it's so funny too! also, this fake dating with Jade fic. literally life changing. one of my faves ever ever ever. my mind lives there I'm always thinking about how good it is! got me kicking my feet and giggling!!!

idk how long you've been in the fandom, but I think you might have stumbled upon Laurie's writing before, all her scenarios are so nice to read, she's very creative! I personally really like this Reader turns into a siren (with Jade), as you call feel all the allure from reader and Jade's yearning!

KIMIKO IS SOOO FUNNY, seriously you'll be laughing out loud at your phone when reading her works! one of my all time faves of hers is this living with the housewardens as it's so domestic... I love domesticity... but fr give her masterlist a look, it's super worth it!!

I also really like Aurora's househusband series, since, as I said, domesticity is very apealling to me. take this Househusband Azul as an example and if you like it, do check out the event masterlist!

Moray's butler Jade is so nice too, I really like the dynamic as he is a bit of a butler type character!

Pando's writing is also super nice to read! I've really liked her recent Rook event prompt, even if you don't like Rook that much I garantee this will make you fall a bit for him, the imagery is just soooo good!

Mob's dorm leaders turn into cats series seems to be so cute too! I'll admit I still have to read it, but I'm sure it's very good (I promise I'll read it once I get enough time to do so!!)

Rui's Diasomnia freetime is so cute and funny, definetly a light hearted read to lift up your mood! their works make me smile a lot!

now. hear me out. it's time I go absolutely insane over them. if you haven't checked out their writing yet then WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? PLS PLS DO!!

MAL IS SO FUNNY, all her smau posts are wonderful, I really like the Kalim idol series! all the characters interactions are so funny fr she got me giggling at my phone with every update! the ignoring them series was the first of their works that I've read and it still has got a special place in my heart <3 how about your good dose of first years roommates? and if you're feeling up to some angst how about this Diasomnia royal au?

AMORA'S WRITING IS LOVELY, all of the imagery and metaphors are truly breathtaking, I never get tired of reading her works <33 it's a MUST to read this amazing Jamil fic, literally so canon, I love the dynamic between reader and Jamil soooo much! Amora's Jamil is god tier, you'll fall in love with her writing too! also, take this Jamil love languages, it'll warm up your heart <3

I don't even know where to start with Cherry's writing. the way she elaborates headcanons is very captivating and how she inserts little references for their disney movies is so endearing! I've been thinking a lot about this Silver fic lately, the whole atmosphere is so reminiscent of The Sleeping Beauty! honestly? here, just take her whole masterlist and have fun, you'll be there for hours, so enjoy to your hearts content <3

obviously there are many other writers and fics I could reccomend, but these are the first ones that come to mind! twst fandom has a lot of wonderful people that are willing to share their works with us and I'm very grateful for that! I hope you can check these fics out and give them some love, anon, I promise you'll have a great time with them!

Ten Books To Know Me

Thanks for the tag girlie @celestemagnoliathewriter

I'm a book girlie to the core, so I could talk all day about my favorite novels or spend an entire day at Barnes and Noble lol. Anyway, here are ten books to get to know me.

Jade City- Quite possibly one of my favorite trilogies of all time. I just chose the first installment in the Green Bone Saga, well, because it's the first, but all three books are masterpieces. If you're an urban fantasy girlie like me, pleaseeeee read these books. I'll never get over the world and family dynasty Fonda Lee created with this series.

Hide- I will read any single genre you put in front of me, but I'm absolutely a sucker for detective novels. And Lisa Gardner is one of the queens of writing detective thrillers with the perfect amount of romantic suspense. She has like over twenty novels in this genre, but Hide is my favorite. Seems to be a fan favorite too, because they made a TV movie based on this book.

Working Stiff- the only non-fiction book on this list despite the fact that I read a good mix between the two. It's somewhat of a memoir of Judy Melinek who's a forensic pathologist. This is my future career so I enjoyed reading about her journey to get to where she is now.

The Bride Test- my comfort romance novel! Helen Hoang is just one of those writers who I'll read anything from. Most people have read her debut novel, The Kiss Quotient (and that's a damn good book!), but I just reallllyyyy love the Bride Test. Khai and Esme have my whole heart.

Nancy Drew- A CHILDHOOD BANGER. Classic. Went #1 on my childhood Billboard for 18+ weeks. Smashed every record. Lol they could write 1000 Nancy Drew books, I'm gonna read every single one. They were my first foray into being a book girlie at the ripe age of 8, so they'll always have a special place in my heart. (SN: I realllyy have the urge to go out and re-buy all of the Nancy Drew video games).

Six of Crows- Best found family dynamic in a book me thinks? The twists and turns were everything and I loved every single character in the Crows.

Get a Life, Chloe Brown- Another romantic fave! I'll never not love a sassy female lead. And then the male lead was lumberjack height grump?? Sign me up! You'll always be famous, Chloe and Red!

Princess Diaries- Another childhood fave? GASP. Meg Cabot knew the hell what she was doing when it came to teen girl fiction. And she's still writing books for the series! The Quarantine Princess Diaries literally came out THIS MONTH.

TTYL- Okay last childhood banger, I promise. This was a Lauren Myracle series told ENTIRELY thru IM/texting and I loved it. I was in middle school reading these books and lowkey they were a lil too grown for me at the time, but I snuck and read them anyway. Another win for the teen girlies.

The House on Mango Street- OK, a lot of these books have been about being my fave to read. The House on Mango Street, while I definitely enjoy reading, was probably the first book that inspired me to write. We all know this is a modern literary classic, but there's just something so magical about the way she writes. I read that book and thought, yo how cool would it be to write something as awesome as this? Therefore, it deserves a place on this list.

I’ve been watching Tom complete his press junket for TCR and noticing the headlines that are getting picked up and used for clickbait. A few headlines that stood out in particular, because he actually said them, were “being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problem that come with any film set, just added to that extra level of pressure” “Holland to take a break from acting after new series broke him”“I’m now taking a year off and that is a result of how difficult this show was,” and “I thought that after two months I’d be itching to get back on set. I’m now six months in and I’m absolutely loving my time off. I’m really enjoying myself.”

🧐Should we be reading in between the lines or the writing on the wall?

I am by no means attempting to play mental health olympics. I understand feelings and emotions are personal and no two people feel everything the same. However, Z played Rue for 16 months, showed us pictures of her literal cuts and bruises from knocking down doors, had the same (if we’re being totally honest, even more) pressure on her since the person whose life she was portraying was always two centimeters away and she also had to go to deep, dark emotional places for twice as long (and she did a fantastic job) but she didn’t “take a break from acting” or use the job description of an EP to sell herself to critics, journalists or fans. Outside of Claire, no one from Z’s side has ever mentioned her being an EP.

I sound like I’m nitpicking because I am. It’s just Z doesn’t complain (publicly) or ever do the woe is me act. During Z’s Cinema Con acceptance speech, she said her “purpose was to be a story teller for those who can’t tell their own stories.” In your opinion, do those quotes up there sound like someone whose passion is acting or someone who’s become slightly jaded and is going through the motions?*

Yes, I was in NYC today and it looked like apocalypse. I know many on the west coast are used to this but I have never seen anything like it in my life. NYC was orange.

Anyway, your ask. I'll preface being I don't love comparing them and also that I really haven't read a lot of his TCM press interviews though I have seen the clickbait titles, more around him taking time off.

I think it's hard to say how Z really feels because there is also the idea that they only let us see what they want us to Z and I think Z has the added pressure of not being white and knowing that she she has to present a certain way because she has less room for error or to mess up or to be seen as angry or any other judgment that white men don't usually have. That said, I do think Z currently genuinely has a passion for storytelling.

I don't think there is any point comparing who handled their mental health better when dealing with more difficult roles but I do think it's good on Tom if he could see where it was messing with him and could talk about it or get help or do what he needed to do for himself.

I really don't know if acting is his one true passion, or maybe he is getting jaded? I also think there are people that genuinely love the craft but get disillusioned at everything else in the industry that comes along with it all.

I also keep in mind that both Tom and Z got into the industry as young children and so it wouldn't be totally crazy that they reach a point in their still young lives where they question if that is the career they want. Tom has certainly been way more vocal about it than Z, even before this when he would be talking in interviews about potentially retiring and having a family.

My guess is Tom doesn't want to completely retire and it's not that he lost his passion for the arts so much as he maybe doesn't want the kind of full on career he's had since Marvel and wants to take it a slower pace. Fans want their faves to work constantly and always be at the top of the box office.

Can I see current Z retiring? Not even a little bit. Could I see Tom taking a step back? Yes but I also think he would miss it if he ever did entirely. Purely guessing though.

guys funny thing ok so my best friend LOVES john. a lot. not a kin but a comfort character. and he's john not in a kin way but they're just the same. and then my other two best friends are literally rose and jade in real life. we four are hateclub (bestfriendgroup name). so you'd think i like dave right? WRONG!!! i never liked dave he's one of my least favorite homestuck characters BUT. when i see an image of all the beta kids together i think "omg i'm dave mimi's john sick is rose and kaff is jade" AND ALSO their colours are our favorites?? my fave color is red mimi's is blue and the color i always associated with sick is purple and kaffee green. so like... we're THE beta kids even tho i don't like dave i am so far from kinning him BUT... in a hateclub way i am him. but outside of hateclub my friend duxe is dave. not kin bc she's not a kin type of guy but they are the same. in my head. it's all connected...

This is probably random, but what would you say are your favorite Silvia Moreno-Garcia books? You're one of the few people I know who also knows about her and loves her work

Oh no worries, I love her stuff and it always feels like there's too few avenues for talking about books we love in general, unless they're central to an established fandom. Like I literally do love everything she's written and its hard to rank them because aside from just really enjoying her prose and world-building in general, she has this really neat tendency to write books that are wildly different from each other and somehow manage to each cater to really specific trope/thematic preferences I have. LOL, it makes me feel very special.

I'd say Gods of Jade and Shadow is for sure my favorite though, but that has a lot to do with the specific myths and legends she pulled from as the basis of her world-building for this one. I'm a total mythology and folklore nerd, have been since I was a kid, like I would legit spend most of my lunch periods chilling in the school library reading every mythology or folktales book I could find. And so of course, I've always been pretty quick to pick up sf/f or magical realism books based off myths or legends I'm familiar with, and the fairly recent uptick in books inspired by Mesoamerican myths is actually what led me to her work in the first place. I was reading Aliette de Bodard's Servants of the Underworld series (which I got onto after first finding her through her Dominion of the Fallen series, which is also fantastic), and then someone brought up GoJaS a couple years ago as a comparison point, and I was like omg you had me at the Hero Twins references. Like, I always loved those stories in particular, so I was a shoo-in for this novel and then like, read everything else in her bibliography the second I was done with it.

But yeah, the world-building in this one is just exquisite, and the setting and time period is rendered so vividly, and I adore how she weaves in tropes from all parts of the world so you end up with like a coming of age story revolving around Mayan mythology but with the framework of a Cinderella story and so on and so on, and it all just is woven together so naturally and seamless, I love it. Fave book is fave.

Veeeeery close behind it though would have to be Mexican Gothic.....another fave trope of mine is maybe pretty niche but like.....dynastic stories about squabbling families of immortals has been a go-to fave of mine ever since I got hooked on The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny as a kid. Again, this one is a very different book from Gods of Jade and Shadow, but the world-building is great here and the whole basis for the family's longevity, and I LOVED how she tied all that back into giving not just the family but the house they lived in its own kinda almost magical properties, with the whole thing with 'the gloom' and the way the house retained memories.

And again, she does such a great job bringing together totally disparate elements from different genres and regions, to make something really new and unique. Like, the gothic in the title isn't kidding, lol, at times this one really feels like...a fantasy version of something like Rebecca.

(Also, apparently there's an adaptation of Mexican Gothic in the works at Hulu. Fingers crossed. Also, kinda random but I've been seeing trailers for the upcoming vampire movie The Invitation, and its had me thinking of this book again a lot just because I get similar vibes from it).

Signal to Noise is also a really fun one - its a little less....mmm, polished, I wanna say.....than her later works? Like you can tell its her first novel, but at the same time, she's talked about it being a lot more personal for her, and based on her parents and their relationship, and that emotional grounding really shines through as well. So although this book doesn't have the same expansive world-building or intricate plotting of some of her later books, its very immersive and just feels more intimate, like the literary equivalent of being right there in the room with these characters, watching their more slice-of-life adventures unfold, as opposed to the more distanced 'sitting back and watching this cinematically unfold on the screen' feel of books like MG and GoJaS.

Plus, I loooooove magic systems or powers that are based off music or listening to music - one of my fave obscure X-Men characters is a mutant called DJ who manifests different superpowers depending on what genre of music he's listening to, so everything about Mercedes' magic and casting spells based off of songs she was listening to was like, mmmm no longer just vibing with this book, am full on vibrating, actually.

The Beautiful Ones is another fave for its worldbuilding, and the way it treats things like telekinesis as commonplace in a historical setting, similar to Mary Robinette Kowal's magical Regency series, The Glamourist Histories. And just the love story and betrayals in this one are so well-crafted and its like a historical telenovela with superpowers and really how could it POSSIBLY be more up my alley, y'know? But even with all that, its the characters that really sell this one for me. Antonina's so adorably awkward and Hector may quite literally be 'three mysterious enigmatic love interest' tropes standing on each other's shoulders and wearing a trench coat but damn if he doesn't pull that look off well.

Velvet Was the Night is just a few hundred pages of what the fuck what the fuck what the fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Like seriously, what even IS this book, but I say that with alllll the adoration. She really just swung for the fences with this one, but it works, its just.....unabashedly noir with a comic book nerd in 1970s Mexico becoming an amateur sleuth trying to Nancy Drew her way to the bottom of mysterious disappearances and thus getting entangled with a hitman who becomes obsessed with her and omg this book is ridiculous but in the best way. The one gripe I had with it was I kept waiting for Maite's emphasized but then mysteriously disappearing kleptomaniac tendencies to be plot-relevant, but it never happened and so at the end of the book I was like....well that was certainly A Character Quirk but I mean the other main character kills people so, y'know, all things are relative I guess fhalsfhklafhaklfhla.

Certain Dark Things - I mean, she had me at vampires. By the time I got to this one I was like, its Silvia Moreno-Garcia, its vampires, what more do I need to know. But honestly, this one has some of my favorite world-building on top of that, and Domingo's a funky little sweetheart. Atl's like I am MYSTERIOUS and JADED and occasionally HOMICIDAL and I shall NOT be undone by your scrappy pluck and sweet charming naivete and cut to ten pages later OH NO I AM UNDONE BY YOUR SCRAPPY PLUCK AND SWEET CHARMING NAIVETE OH UNFORESEEABLE FATE, MUCH UNEXPECTED OUTCOME, HOW DARE.

Untamed Shore is probably the one and only book of hers thus far that's not like....been a miss for me, exactly, so much as it was just....fine? Like I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, I just don't have particularly strong thoughts or feelings about it one way or another. It didn't linger. Again, not a knock against it, and I'd still rate it a worthwhile read, its just comparatively speaking, juxtaposed with the rest of her bibliography I don't have much to say about it.

I still haven't managed to track down and read most of her novellas yet, though she's got a good half-dozen of those that look interesting and I plan to get to. But first I gotta get my grubby little hands on The Daughter of Doctor Moreau which I literally only found out about yesterday and just came out last month, because I fucking LOVE Doctor Moreau retellings in general, so am definitely eager to see her take.

Seriously, how does this author keep tailoring whole novels to my PRECISE niche interests, its driving me crazy but also omg never stop please and thank you, falkfhaklfhaklfhaf.

how i feel about this character: i love her SO MUCH. she was an instant fave for me, like literally i think for a good part when i first watched s1 she was my fav character!! i love that she's always unapologetically herself, i love her tenacity and i love that she got her happy ending in the end!!! <3

any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: ANGIE ANGIE ANGIE ANGIE. said this a million times, i'll say it once again, jadangie was my first violetta ship and its still in my top 3. i love them in ways that are difficult to articulate ok. also im very much obsessing over her and esmeralda during my s2 rewatch (as its very evident by my constant posting) and nicolas is alright for her endgame <3

my favourite non-romantic relationship for this character: i wish we could've seen more of her and vilu bonding in s3, i love what minuscule crumbs we've got of her friendship with olga and ramallo, and i needed a proper pablo/jade friendship. ill never shut up about that the way that he tries to get through to her about german in s1 was so heartfelt and genuine and THEY SHOULDVE BEEN BFFS OK

my unpopular opinion about this character: i have no idea what an unpopular opinion about her could be tbh, i think overall we've all come to the conclusion that she's a queen and that m*tias literally ruined her and the moment she was free from him she started thriving and everything so uh. i guess some people have said that she takes up a lot of unnecessary screen time at times which. i definitely agree with on one side, but i genuinely think that most of that is m*tias' fault cause he's literally the worst and every scene he's in is the worst by association

one thing i wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: a proper apology from german. i don't know if she actually did get one in s3 or something, but it says something if i can't remember it. i also wish she and angie actually became friends and that she got a restraining order from her toxic asshole gaslighter brother <3

favourite friendship for this character: i already mentioned them in the other question, but while her friendship with pablo is mostly wishful thinking on my behalf, i genuinely loved what little we've seen of the ramallo/olga/jade alliance. like the maria's ghost plotline in s1 is tedious but i love that they kind of worked together through that, like ramallo being the straight man and olga and jade both lowkey highkey freaking out. now im thinking what if they actually caught m*tias in the act and kicked him out and then jade lived her best life with her new besties......ok ill shut up

Sure.

#1 of All Time SPUFFY

Spuffy, it wrote the book on both beauty and the beast archetypes, and enemies to lovers. For me the most important thing in a ship is the character development it brings about. Spike's redemption doesn't work without Buffy, because it's meeting the one person who expects better than him and won't put up with his selfish crap, that forces his character arc. Buffy's development is also nothing without Spike, it's meeting Spike that makes Buffy confront her dark side, and realize that being a good person isn't something you are, but something you work towards for the sake of your loved ones. The ideal ship should inspire this permanent character development and chane (Unless it ends tragically), they should be an inseperable part of each other's character arcs.

#2 Kumagawa / Ajimu

This is what I was talking about when I said "unless it ends tragically". Sometimes you ship two people who should never end up together, because they probably won't accept their differences. However, even in a failed relationship, two people can be important to each other. There's not really a hapyp ending for Ajimu and Kumagawa, despite their similiarities when they're together they just seem to make each other worse. In Medaka Box they are the anti-Zenkichi and Medaka. However, for Ajimu Kumagawa represents her only human connection, and for Kumagawa Ajimu represents the first person to be "good" to him even though their relationship soured at one point. Therefore I find the ship interesting because despite the fact that they are permanently separated they are still an incredibly important part of each other's identities and who they are now.

# 3 Matsuda / Junko

Basically for the same reason as what I said above. There is no universe where Junko and Matsuda end up in a happy relationship, as long as Junko is still Junko. However, Matsuda and DanganRonpa Zero as a whole add so much to Junko as a character. As long as Matsuda exists, Junko's more than just a black hole that only cares about despair, and I think together the side materials like IF and Zero show that Junko actually is capable of caring for people outside of her natural tendency to want to throw everything into despair, however, humanizing Junko in this manner doesn't actually make her a better person. She can have feelings like romantic, and familial love, and she still chooses to destroy those things and the people in her life. It just adds so much to Junko as a character, which is what I like ships as, an extension of characterization through character interaction.

#5 UIHAI

I love Ui and Hairu because it's like a broken fairy tale. It was a love that could have saved Hairu, but it didn't, because for Ui he always realized his feelings too late to save anyone. Hairu was obsessively chasing after Arima for the smallest amount of approval, when Ui was right there, and already in love with her. They seem like the perfect couple that could never get together, because Hairu is too fixated on Arima, and Ui is too fixated on his job. They are perfectly suited to giving each other what they wanted, and even in lots of side materials and sketches they seem like a pair, or Ui's feelings for Hairu come across as pretty clear but it never came to be in canon.

#6 ZACK / AERITH

Once again for the same reasons as above, it seems like a fairy tale romance of a knight, and a girl he wants to protect, but it fails completely to live up to that story. Zack and Aerith is a tragic story of first love for both of them, and it's also really formative for who Aerith is now as a character. Zack tried to be there for her, and he tried to be a hero to Aerith, only to very consistently not be there for her, and then disappear from her life all together. Much later on, Aerith is incredibly isilated, unable to fall in love with the real cloud without projecting Zack onto him. It's a relationship where in a better world they could have been there for each other, but also the failure of the relationship develops them as much as characters as them getting together might have. Zack and Aerith are one of those relationships that seems ideal on the surface but they are very different people with different wants, Zack wants to be a hero, Aerith just wants to be a person first.

#7 LINK / MIDNA

The best zelda ship period. Once again the most important part of a ship interaction is the change that both characters inspire in each other. Midna begins not caring about Link at all, never referring to him by name, only seeing him as an object, an old legend, a hero to be used instead of a person. Midna's a manipulative freak, and Link breaks through to her because he actually isn't interested in being the hero of legend, he just wants to save the people closest to him at the village because he feels indebted to them, and Midna inevitably becomes one of those people. Link and Midna's partneship makes the game, because it's Midna who pushes him and makes him into a hero, but it's Link through his unfledging acceptance of her who inspires her to be a person once more, and not just the twilight priness.

#8 Morrigan / Warden from DRAGON AGE ORIGINS

This and Spuffy are like the only two on this list who actually end up together, so let me just have this. Once again my favorite aspect of a ship is the transformation the relationship brings baout in a character. The warden is a non-character, but for Morrigan herself, her relationship with the warden is what allows her to escape an abusive household, and beyond that decide not to repeat the cycle of abuse with her new family. What made this ship an all time fave was in witch hunt when the Warden gets to ask her what she wants, and she's just completely confused. Even with her mother dead, Morrigan is still a tool of her mother's ambitions, it's still all about her mother wants. It's her love with the warden, either through friendship or romance that awakens Morrigan to the fact she's allowed to exist as a person with wants and needs outside of what her mother wants her to be.

#9 Kaine / Nier

It's the Most Humanizing Ship Ever Between Two Mass Murderers. As a story, I think Nier is about finding the life, and love, in a story that is ultimately, fatally doomed. Nier only worse and worse as the game goes on but that doesn't mean there was never any love in his life. For every bad thing Nier does, he was not bad to every single person, specifically Kaine, it was Nier's love and belief in her that allows the wounds in her heart to start to heal. As Nier and Nier gets worse, Kaine's own shadow self says, that her feelings in her heart are no longer hatred, or even revenge, there's just a pure white light of love left. In a game where everything only rots, Kaine has healed to the point where she can love again when she never thought it was possible. It's why I like ending D the best, because it's Nier knowing he can never escape his own sins, but he can use his last action to heal Kaine fully all the way and allow her to live on a few more years.

#10 SATOSUGU

Once again, there's no universe where they end up together, and yet still on opposite sides of a conflict they remain each other's closest friends. The most important thing about a ship is the character development it leads to and Gojo would not be who he is today without Suguru. I generally get the sense that Gojo's idea of a good person isn't himself, but rather who Geto used to be before he broke. Gojo actually relied on on Geto for a lot more than he realized, considering it was the one connection he had that seemed to humanize him. Geto provided the chosen one who can do literally anything in the world with his powers, support and guidance. He was the jade, and the foundation of their two person friendship, and then the jade broke.

Gojo and Geto's broken relationship is not only the most emotional thing in the series to me, it's also an incredible part of who they are ten years after the fact. Gojo straight up didn't bother to make friends for ten years later after the fact even though he could have, Geto still told his daughters that Gojo and him were best friends, they just had a fight. He couldn't comperehend in Volume Zero that Gojo would still regard him as a friend after everything that they had done.

It's like one of those "Can't live with them, can't live without them" pairs. They want to be each other's one and only but it just won't work because they don't understand each other, and neither of them is willing to compromise. They are also each other's perfect yin / yang complement. Gojo is the opposite of Geto, and still carries a part of Geto within him, and Geto even after becoming the enemy of the sorcery world while Gojo is the savior, still carries that friendship with Gojo inside of him as well. While their relationship is a failed one, it's also a past I hope that the next generation Megumi and Itadori both learn from, even if Geto never truly comes back.
