I have a laptop with a 1060 in it ... it can't exactly run windows these days with the bloat. I want to turn it into a portable drawing machine that can run Krita and upload my shit art to github and social media(if I so want). For this reason I'm falling down the Linux rabbithole again. I'm mildly proficient but would love peoples Linux reccomendations for an old gaming PC to be turned into a Krita/GIMP art machine.

A noninsignificant portion of my day is now spent fighting for my life in Linux and being fed unhelpful answers by tech support that refuse to give any actual comprehensive training on the cluster. What is it about Linux that makes people lose all empathy I stg.

But in all seriousness, I absolutely endorse switching to linux instead of windows/mac. FOSS is the future of tech and learning how to be tech literate in this day and age is incredibly important, especially when it comes to navigating our cyberpunk dystopia.
I'd recommend looking at DistroWatch and doing a lot of research on your first distro, mine was Kubuntu, but before I chose I cycled through and tested several different ones to get a feel of what I want.
A lot of newer linux distros are very beginner friendly and you can have a desktop manager that's very similar to feel as windows. No spyware, no built in apps like candy crush or skype. The best thing is, Linux will always be free, open source, and community driven.
The customisation abilities can give any paid os a run for its money, and with the bulk of them being super lightweight due to no bloatware, you can use super outdated tech and still have a fast, functional pc.
And, because of stuff like the steam deck, gaming is also really fucking great on linux now. Between steam, wine, and lutris, I can play my entire library without issues (including FFXIV, which is super important lmfao)
If you are tired of being ruled by just windows or mac, please consider getting into linux, its so worth it - yes, it may look intimidating at first especially with using the terminal but there's so much documentation and community support to help you along the way

so in trying to get sonic adventure 2 to run on my main computer I have recently installed arco linux (which is good. and understands what xfce is for) on a VM (needed access to the arch user repository) and messed around with steam tinker launch (robust tool for running games on linux without official linux support) and discovered a weakness that it(/proton/winetricks) apparently has which is:
if you need your wine prefix (thing that tells wine what kind of windows-esque environment to set up for you) to be 32-bit (because you need to install old dotnet frameworks that don't (~sorta???) work on 64), you Cannot make this happen VIA steamtinkerlaunch itself. ? for some reason ? it's easy to do in the terminal if you want to just Make The Prefix, but if you want to integrate the prefix with the thing that tells the game to launch via the prefix instead of via Just Steam, you have to use the tool that's built in to steamtinkerlaunch, which makes a 64-bit prefix (I have not been able to find a setting that makes this not true*).
this has I THINK ? .....? at least taught me What needs to happen for the game to run, like in the abstract, especially since I was able to make it work really easily on windows 10 when I tried that, but like.. .. . .....there are so many elements here I kind of don't even know where to start. like maybe the most achievable solution is to just make Wine run Steam for me..????? just completely bypass whatever that handoff is by putting Steam itself inside a 32-bit vivarium??
*(I THOUGHT I found a setting for this but it did not work. torment.)

This beautiful thing is 1) very beautiful and 2) not something I need to buy, but I have a lot of RasPi parts lying around in need of a project, including a portrait non-touch 2K screen, a StereoPi 2, a CM4, some SDR sticks, and various other parts.
My question for you folks is:
What's the best thumb-sized wired (not Bluetooth) USB keyboard you've seen?
