I've thought about making a post like this countless times over the years, and the problem I always stall out on is just...no one should have to plead for recognition of their humanity. And to plead for the recognition of someone else's humanity sometimes just feels like a further insult. As if even in doing it - no matter how heartfelt - you are merely feeding the system that values your words, your thoughts, your experiences so much more highly than theirs. Every time some atrocity is happening in full view of the world there's an outpouring of: look at the faces of these children, listen to the dreams of these students, hear the names and stories of people not so different from you. Sometimes that feels like witnessing. Sometimes it feels like another dehumanization. No one should have to offer so many proofs of personhood, for the world to gawk at and debate over and disregard.

Which is all to say that I struggle over whether it is meaningful, or even right, to offer emotion and experience in addition to actions and analysis.

But every time some atrocity happens in full view of the world, I wonder how many people have felt that frisson of recognition, watching a film and seeing the street they grew up on. It doesn't need to be the actual street. But the sum total of small sensory details - the angle and color of the light, the recycling bins by the curb, the shape of the fence posts, the accents of the neighbors - is so instantly and eerily familiar that it gives the story an extra layer of vivid realism. And I think about the time I had this experience wrt a place I once lived in and loved - not while watching a fictional story, but while watching a documentary about a genocide.

I think about hearing a recording played on the news, of small children sobbing so hard - you could hear it even audio-only - that they might be sick. And I remember thinking numbly that to many of the listeners that clip would be noise. ChildrenCrying.mp3. Heartrending in any language - but they would not understand the words, and they would not recognize the accent, and they certainly would not hear the same childish lisp over the exact same consonant as the neighbor's son who once fell asleep sitting in my lap, on a bus too crammed with passengers not to share seats.

I think about the breathless inhale I took, hearing reporters and officials wail and gnash their teeth over the sight of "blue-eyed" - direct quote - Ukrainian refugee children fleeing their homes. How extraordinary and appalling and unquestionably worthy of compassion that was considered. And I think about multiple funerals in a weekend, people holding their breath driving through checkpoints of masked soldiers, everyone with a story of Where They Were During The Coup, and how brown-eyed children fleeing state repression is considered neither remarkable nor even tragic, but as a crime.

I think about how gutting each of those moments was. How they felt and feel like moments that will stay with me forever. How maddening it is every time the world gives you some fresh proof of how little it values the lives of people you love, or of anyone else whose suffering is considered similarly unremarkable. And how my own secondhand rage and grief must be only a scratch on the surface of what it feels to be the person whose humanity is - not even questioned, but so often hardly considered at all.

I don't even know where to go from that but if the rage and grief is worth anything, there it is.

"I'm shooting my mom but it's just a prank."

"I won't defend you from Dad but I might try to stop you two from fighting."

All his allies like "I've just accepted the fact that I can't trust you while Etho's around because you'll betray me for him." / "Yeah, that's fair." They continue to let Bdubs stay in their base. He brags about how Etho lets him play pool in his basement and eat ice cream for breakfast. He would die for this man.

The fact that it's considered predictable that "of course Impulse gave you a clock again" so Cleo just sighs and asks to see it. Yeah of course Impulse clonked Bdubs on the head with that thing for another season, driving home I have not forgotten with every part of his being...

Nobody can trust this greasy little man and yet they adore him. He's just a sweetheart. Cinnamon roll. Everybody's angel. Haha he'll slam a sword through your stomach, loot your body, and walk off. He's never done anything wrong in his life btw.

I love the way Bdubs plays.

one of the funniest things is during all nine episodes luffy did not actively have one single plan except "become the worlds greatest pirate and find the one piece". he spent at max a month? less? at sea and everything he accomplished (taking down FOUR feared pirates in like a week, stealing the grand line map, finding a faithful and loyal crew, getting a bounty of 30 million on his head, etc) was mostly by accident. he stumbles into trouble and then proceeds to become the trouble

The American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of Northern California, Center for Gender & Refugee Studies, and National Immigrant Justice Center filed a legal challenge today to the Biden administration’s new asylum ban.

The challenge was filed swiftly after the new policy’s unveiling. The ban largely mimics two Trump-era policies — known as the “entry” and “transit” bans — which were blocked by the courts. It prohibits asylum for everyone at the border who transited through another country en route to the United States (i.e., people from countries other than Mexico) except for those who are able to obtain a scarce appointment to present themselves at a border port through a flawed mobile application; the rare person who first sought and was denied asylum in another country; or those who can prove that they qualify for one of a few other extremely narrow exceptions.

“The Biden administration’s new ban places vulnerable asylum seekers in grave danger and violates U.S. asylum laws. We’ve been down this road before with Trump,” said Katrina Eiland, managing attorney with the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project. “The asylum bans were cruel and illegal then, and nothing has changed now.”

The filing argues that asylum laws do not allow the administration to restrict access to asylum based on an individual’s manner of entry or whether they applied for asylum elsewhere. It further explains that migrants cannot meaningfully seek asylum in transit countries because many lack a functioning asylum system, others have systems that are stretched to the breaking point, and most are not remotely safe for asylum seekers to find refuge. U.S. courts have recognized these principles in rejecting the previous asylum bans that the new rule tries to combine and re-impose.

“People fleeing persecution have a legal right to seek asylum, no matter how they reach the border,” said Melissa Crow, director of litigation at the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS). “Our asylum system was designed to protect people fleeing imminent threats to their lives, who do not have the luxury of waiting for an elusive appointment or for an application to be adjudicated in a country where they are in danger. The Biden administration has had over two years to set up a fair and humane asylum process post-Title 42. That it has instead chosen to resurrect and repackage illegal Trump-era policies is reprehensible.”

The case also cites numerous issues with requiring people to use the flawed CBP One mobile app to secure an appointment to seek asylum, including lack of financial resources to acquire a smartphone, lack of adequate internet access to use the app, technical glitches, language and literacy barriers, and an insufficient number of available appointments. These multiple, compounding barriers to CBP One access will leave many asylum seekers stranded indefinitely in dangerous and life-threatening conditions in Mexico.

“This unlawful rule relies on a mobile app that functions poorly, is available in just three languages, and requires people to enter a lottery for a woefully insufficient number of appointments,” said Keren Zwick, director of litigation at the National Immigrant Justice Center. “Even more egregious, the rule perpetuates false notions that people fleeing persecution are safe in Mexico and Central America, and it offers purported solutions that will be routinely unavailable, especially to migrants who are not from the Western Hemisphere. In doing so, the rule levies special harm on some of the most vulnerable migrants, including women, LGBTQ people, and Black and Indigenous people.”

The challenge to the ban was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on behalf of the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, American Gateways. Central American Resource Center, Immigrant Defenders Law Center, National Center for Lesbian Rights, and the Tahirih Justice Center.

"Iida." Tenya winced. Midoriya's voice was distant, lacking the warmth it usually held. The guilt and fear that had settled like a rock at the bottom of his stomach grew into a boiling mass. "Iida, you are one of my best friends. I trusted you - and yet-"

"I'm sorry!" The apology burst of out his mouth without warning. Uraraka looked on, her eyes devoid of empathy, her mouth set like it with fighting a sneer. Todoroki was cooly blank, hands in his pockets, body language clearly deferring to Midoryia, who, despite being around 5 inches shorter than Tenya, still managed to look down at him. "I didn't mean for this to happen!"

"You didn't? Really?"

"I swear!" Tenya was flustered now, his hands gesticulating wildly, nearly taking members of the throng of people surrounding them. Uraraka let out a disappointed sigh, turning away from Tenya's increasingly pathetic display.

"Iida. You're a smart guy." The praise felt damning. "How did you manage to lead us to the only part of the train station that doesn't contain the Ginza line if you did it accidentally?" Tenya wanted to wail.

"There were so many signs! Some of them pointed in opposite directions! It's terrible design!" At his flustered near shout, Uraraka broke from her faux serious expression, throwing an arm over his shoulder. He was pretty sure she was on tiptoe, but considering she seemed to be on his side he wisely kept his mouth shut.

"To be honest, my first day at UA I couldn't find the Ginza line either. I was trying to catch it from Asakusa though, so that was admittedly kind of on me." The group all nodded commiseratingly. Midoriya sighed, biting back a grin.

"I'm not sure why we made Iida navigate when he basically never takes the train either. Still! I swear the Ginza line runs in literally every train station within 200km of Tokyo, how did you lose it?"

Tenya flushed. "There were just too many signs pointing in different directions! I don't care if your station is a circle - just pick a direction and stick to it! It's confusing!"

Might redo all of the lineart actually. Cuz i'm silly and i found techniques I like way more. Gonna sound crazy but some digital brushes feel physically weird. Like I feel physical sensations when using them and that's how I judge digital brushes/pens.

So my husband got the idea to make a timeline map of my Shanks x Makino series ("Shanties" for short), so that readers could better see how the different fics are connected, and while I should have been prepared, knowing full well how brilliant he is, I was not prepared for the end result. I mean look at it!!!

Some descriptions of key fics and planned updates below! The fics are listed in the recommended reading order on AO3, but feel free to chart your own course!
