many of us give Cole locs or twists down at his shoulders or right below his chin because vibes and also his lego hairpiece but CONSIDER Artist Lilly Brookstone making and painting porcelain beads to put in his hair. consider that his hair was quite long and when his mom died he wanted to save the beads but couldn't bear to see them everyday anymore. perhaps he kept them in a box and would think about putting them on jewelry but pull out last minute when he remembers he could lose them.

maybe he tried wearing his hair natural, in braids, and even defining his curls for some dance productions. by the time he joins the monastery full time, he's gone back to twists for some familiarity in the strange world he'd entered into.

but when his hair starts to gray he's only in his mid thirties (the stress of saving the world has been getting to him). and, after coming home one weekend, he realizes he hasn't seen the beads in years. misty-eyed at the sight of them, realizing he can't bear to be without them anymore. he can't recall his mom's face as quickly as he once could. now the reminder would be a comfort.

stepping out into the kitchen, holding the small box, his puffy eyes locked with his father's. he lifts the lid to display the contents and asks what he thinks. Lou's eyes water and he can't help but place the box aside and hug Cole. "Your dad hasn't had practice in almost twenty years, but if you can put up with that I'd love to help."

every time someone asks him where he got the beads that hang by his collarbone, Cole just laughs. "Have your mom make you some," he says, "these are one of a kind."

crying once again over cole's symbolism

death being tied to him, the earth ninja, makes so much sense. all that comes from the earth (students, children, mothers) someday return to it in a never-ending cycle. not even cole, a manifestation of the element of earth, is free from it

and the fact that his initial weapon is a scythe, a farming tool,

and is ANOTHER symbol of death and mourning hits me so fucking hard because this was NEVER intended in the beginning of the show but naturally evolved from it

and then transfering his weapon to a hammer, a symbol of revenge and justice, building up to master of the mountain where he truly comes into his own, avenging his mother AGHHHHHHH

and despite the fact that he is the strongest, has the most to be angry and vengeful for, cole chooses to be good and kind. just because his mom asked him to, because he knows the good he can cause:

"I will always stand up to those who are cruel and unjust."

AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON DAD COLE. ON THE SYMBOLISM BETWEEN COLE, THE EARTH, NURTURING AND GUIDING YOUNG WU, HES ARGUABLY THE BEST WITH CHILDREN, AND DOMESTIC WORK REGAURDING THEM, UGHHHH

even just between cole and his own mother; keeping her son grounded and whole, despite her passing, the fact that decisions she made as the earth elemental master had ripple effects that long outlived herself, the fact that she lived on not only through her son, but through her reputation among the mountain inhabitants and the good she did for them--

their NAMES, even! Cole -> coal -> victory, or literal charcoal black.

Lilly -> lily (flower) -> passion, rebirth, purity, abundance. literally white flowers.

she was the flower that nurtured a victorious coal.

Master of the Mountain is like the thematic inverse to Rise of the Snakes, because you have these visibly non-human, color-coded species based on an Evil Race archetype, who dwell underground. They have their little eccentricities, one of them decides leadership by combat, and they don't get along with each other. This divide is encouraged and exploited by humans in order to prevent a unified uprising, so that these underground dwellers can remain trapped and out of sight, reduced to superstition on the surface.

But MotM recognizes that these underground species are victims, that they are being unjustly hurt and exploited and victimized; It is the human on the surface, obsessed with the appearance of conventional beauty and normalness, who is the true oppressor here. And our protagonists side with these underground tribes, helping them make amends, and granting them great agency in rebelling against those who trapped them.

And I find it interesting because Cole is very much carrying on the legacy of his mother Lilly, who was also a friend and defender of the Munce and Geckles. Her Blades of Deliverance having freaking skulls etched into their hilts. And her father fought alongside the Serpentine, defending them while humanity drove them underground. Cole himself was turned into a Ghost at one point, and briefly hypnotized by a Serpentine.

Something something. The Brookstone lineage has always been open-minded, welcoming of things that are nonconventional and seem 'scary' on the surface because what is weird, someone who is different, or someone who is different from you? They see the Serpentine, the Munce and the Geckles, and they don't judge nor impose human standards of attractiveness and beauty onto them. They themselves have kinship with 'evil' races, to the point of Cole becoming one of them at a point, and thus reaching out to Yang because he was able to relate. Lou, the ‘outsider’ who marries in, is introduced with an arc about accepting his son for who he is.

Black is a color associated with darkness, death, and evil. But it is also associated with the Masters of Earth. The underground is vilified, hence the Underworld, the Serpentine, the Munce and Geckles; But the Masters of Earth are at home with it. Death is feared but one wields the symbol of the skulls and the other the scythe, and even becomes one of the dead at a point. He fears dragons only to be closer to them than anyone else. The shadows are feared yet ninja find refuge in them, and those who dwell in the earth find much comfort in the darkness already.

ninjas' relationship with a home

Zane is used to moving on from places, as an amnesiac orphan he was used to getting up and carrying on, then his only temporary home, the Monastery, burns down (ref: s1 ep2 Home) and the others blame him for it. granted, he seems unaffected from these accusations and proceeds to find the Destiny's Bounty that day so all is forgiven

I wonder if some of this longing for a home was intensified after he regains his memories in Tik Tok (s1 ep7). because then he would be able to remember a time of prolonged safety and living with people you love

Kai and Nya lived at the blacksmith shop presumably since their parents got kidnapped by Krux and Acronix. Nya even had enough time to create a whole secret room of armor

the first years must've been especially hard given all the reminders of their parents being around. did they leave their bedroom untouched, save for the occasional cleaning?

did Kai have to pull up a stool to the stove to cook until he hit his growth spurt? are most of Nya's memories in that house of Kai making her lunches and tucking her in at night and sending her off to school?

who takes care of the shop while they're gone? and when they come back do they notice everything looks a little smaller- each corner thick with dust and the fingerprints of afternoons when they were 12 and only had each other?

Jay lived with Ed and Edna in the scrapyard since he was little and he can visit back there whenever he likes, but now he has another family to think about: the one he never had, the one that gave him away

however after Skybound he knows he has other parents as well. does he ever sit in the kitchen he grew up in and wonder if his biomom had any recipes she wanted to pass down? if she ever saw families or little kids and thought of him? if they have the same smile or same freckles or same laugh?

sure he can learn about Cliff all he wants and he loves his Mom and Dad dearly, but was there more? could he have learned to master lightning with his Mom? where was she when he was growing up? was she unable to see him or unwilling? is she even alive?

Cole's house is likely the same as when he was little, so he too can go visit, but I wonder if he went off to "boarding school" because after his Mom died he couldn't stand to be at home

what was a place to laugh and paint became gray when Lilly got ill. it turned into a place of hushed voices and packed bags for the hospital. after she died it was the home of yelling, of arguments, of tradition vs. passion. smiles became forced and doors only slammed shut.

with more time having passed, I wonder if Cole is glad that so many things of his are mostly untouched since his Mom died. he can find her neat handwriting on some notes in his desk, in books on the shelves, and point out decor she bought

Lloyd only had a complete home for a small part of his childhood before Misako left him at Darkley's. then, he must've lived somewhere close to the school. when he was doing Pythor's bidding, he seemed to be mostly homeless

after growing up deserted at a boarding school (that he clearly didn't like) and manipulated into long treks and homelessness to do the bidding of a snake, perhaps his misbehavior at the beginning of his stay on the Bounty was because he couldn't imagine it lasting. him? a place where he felt at home? better the devil you know than the devil you don't- just toss me back out on the streets I don't CARE!

when do you think he realized that the others weren't going to leave him like his Mom did or take advantage of him like Pythor? how many months in did it take him to realize that his uncle Wu wasn't the only one who wanted him there?

Infodump about dark sorcerer Cole because yes

he tries to find his biological parents after s13. it doesn't go well, Lou doesn't want anything to do with him and Lilly is dead so. not fun

in s6 he's having a really bad time over Clouse being back. he still remembers the alternate timeline (everyone does) and has a breakdown over not knowing Clouse's whereabouts after defeating Nakhadan

Cole and Skylor weren't very close on Chen's island, but after s4 they bond over shared experiences. they're besties here

he hates noodles with a burning passion

everyone jokes about how Cole looks a lot like famous performer Lou Brookstone. it's not as funny when they figure out who his parents are

the ninja don't officially start dating until s7, since they were dealing with Lloyd being kidnapped, the alternate timeline and Cole was still adjusting to being a ninja

Cole is much more suspicious of King Vangelis because he can sense magic. when they get thrown into the pit he's not even surprised

Harumi knows about his backstory and tries to get him on her side, but it doesn't work.

he has a teddy bear named Rocky Dangerbuff, hence why he went with that pseudonym in SoG

said teddy bear was given to him by Jay to match Mr Cuddlywomp

he's considered dead in absentia and never bothered changing it

Cole doesn't exist in the legal system other than a birth and death certificate, so it's a pain for the police to arrest him in s6 and 16

he makes a hole in the monastery walls multiple times while learning to control his powers

Kai is very blunt about having found the master of earth. when they go to tell Wu he just says "we found the master of earth" with no other context. Cole isn't even in the room at the time

he was kidnapped at about 3 years old so he doesn't have much memory of his parents other than them dancing

Jay jokingly got him a wizard costume for day of the departed. he's dressed as one for 3 years in a row now

he can actually cook in this au. he thinks of it like potion making except it also tastes good
