jacket
[ ID: A digital comic of Philip Wittebane from The Owl House. In the first panel, a young philip is smiling, looking at Caleb who is to the right of him. He is holding the sleeve of the jacket Caleb is wearing. Caleb is also smiling, but the top half of his head is obscured. In the background is a sun-like pattern of lines. In the second panel below, a young philip is alone and upset. He is clutching the jacket Caleb used to wear. Messy scribbled lines fill the edges of the background. In the third panel, an older philip (same appearance as in “Elsewhere and Elsewhen”) is staring ahead angrily as he clutches the one sleeve of what used to be Caleb’s jacket. There are small traces of blood on the jacket and on his face. In the background directly behind him is an explosion of lines, almost resembling a firework like pattern. Finally, in the last panel at the very bottom, is a much older Philip in his current design (as of King’s tide). His one arm holds his other, still wearing Caleb’s jacket. He is frowning, with the rest of his face obscured. In the background, lines come down from the top, similar to a melting/dripping pattern. End ID. ]

i’ve seen a few people claim Philip stripped caleb’s jacket off his body after his death as some morbid memento, but we already have his memories on the matter and he had caleb’s jacket pre-fight and was wearing it when he first arrived.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
even in his shadow form you can make out he’s wearing the coat.
Tumblr media
Not to mention caleb is never seen wearing it in any of the memories on the isles
Tumblr media
Nah, as much as i know people love finding new ways to make philip even more morbid, if the story holds any weight, and it probably does, it seems far more likely caleb left it back on earth with philip. There’s no evidence to suggest philip stole it or rid him of it, but that caleb ditched it when he left.
and when philip assumed a witch kidnapped his brother, he put it on, probably as a form of comfort and keeping his brother close at a time where he assumed the worst could have happened to him. Kinda in the same vein of how luz was wearing eda’s jacket to keep her close during their separation.
It seems to be quite an important object to him, being what looks like his only link left to caleb as he was on earth. With the thought he also grew his hair out to have a ponytail like his older brother it appears to be less like “Stealing” and way more like a sign of what was originally his admiration and love for his brother.
A strong desire to be close to him and be like him through his appearance, tho only the version of him that he remembers best, which was the one back on earth...not the one that left him for the isles,
(Which def fuels even more why he didn’t appreciate luz insulting it, because it was basically also insulting the brother he’s trying so hard to recreate, the one that didn’t leave him)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This isn’t even out of character that philip likes to keep mementos of his brother, he even seems to have taken his old childhood mask his brother made him to the isles judging by his memories. Tho i’m sure the jacket holds more significance because it was caleb’s first specifically.
Tumblr media
I think it’s definitely easy now to accuse Philip of every bad thing ever, and his obsession with his brother screams serious attachment issues. But it doesn’t appear he had that jacket on originally for anything but genuine love and care for him, at first at least.
There’s no evidence to suggest caleb told philip he was leaving, or any evidence that he even tried to talk to his brother about what was going on with him. As far as we know, he left, and philip, from his pov, went out to save the person he considers his entire world from what he believes might kill and/or hurt him.
And if philip wasn’t the villian of the show, i think a lot more people would be willing to sympathize with that part of his character.
His relationship with his brother has both a lot of resentment for leaving him behind and alone, but also a lot of the original love and admiration for him he held for years.
But with the knowledge he only became a hunter because he felt he needed to fit in with society for survival purposes, combined with the fact caleb was his only family and caretaker...while only being a few years older then him at the very least....you can see how this probably fueled so many of his issues.
Tumblr media
Wanted to make a post about this cause while he deserves the crap for the bad stuff he actually does, it’s at least worth mentioning at one point he was just a naïve child raised in a bad community who originally just wanted to keep the one person he loved the most....safe.
and at one point, that jacket was not some morbid prize he got for what he did, or something he seemingly stole, or him trying to steal his brother’s look, it was originally just something he wore....because he did love him.
And to this day, he still kept it.

Observations on the Hollow Mind Portraits
Rebecca Rose has answered my wishes today by releasing HD versions of the portraits used in Hollow Mind. Here are some things I noticed:
Tumblr media
They're churning butter <3 This is one of the pictures we saw more clearly, so there's not much to say here. Liddol bois <3
Tumblr media
Another picture we've seen pretty clearly in the episode. Someone's already noticed that the rope trap Phillip sets to catch Caleb looks kind of like the one he set in Hollow Mind to catch the palisman monster. Parallels, I guess.
Tumblr media
Here the boys are getting ready for a witch hunt. Again, we've seen this. The expression on Caleb's face seems more aggressive than Phillip. Guess he's older and therefore understands what the witch hunts mean better.
Tumblr media
These boys only have one shirt and one set of overalls. Judging by the rip on Phillip's overalls, and the fact that they each only have one strap, I guess it's an indication of how poor they are. How did they even manage to get a house on their own? I doubt little boy Caleb could have built it himself. Must be an already vacant house or the townsfolk did chip in because they can excuse hanging innocent women but god forbid these two boys be homeless.
Tumblr media
The brothers are older in here. They still have similar hairstyles, but their proportions definitely look less "baby." Phillip still has the same overalls, but Caleb either got new ones or got a new strap for it at least. They also got new boots. While in the previous picture of a witch hunt, the brothers were playing with sticks while the adults did all the work, here the brothers have a torch and a pitchfork and are going with the adults.
We can't see Phillip's face, but it's notable that Caleb looks both excited and malicious here. It's not either of the brother's faults that they were indoctrinated into a puritan society where witch hunts are okay. But this does indicate that Caleb wasn't as horrified by the witch hunts as fanon makes him out to be. I like that. I like the idea that the brothers both started out as bigots, a byproduct of their upbringing. The difference between Phillip and Caleb is that Caleb decided to change when given the chance. Phillip didn't.
Tumblr media
We also saw this one pretty clearly but here's some more detail. They look even older here. Phillip no longer has the buttoned shirt, I think? And if this takes place right before the next picture, then Phillip has tied his hair into a ponytail as well in this scene. Plus, Caleb was holding a torch in the last witch hunt, but now he's holding a pitchfork. So this is probably a different hunt. Moreover, Evelyn's fire looks like it has a purple-pink hue? Maybe that's just the color palette.
Tumblr media
And here it proves that Caleb entered the Boiling Isles through the gate in the graveyard. From what I can see, part of it was also a lake back in the 1600s, though it was definitely more flooded in Thanks To Them. While Caleb is rushing in, (which is definitely reminiscent of the scene where Luz entered the portal door) Phillip seems to be lagging behind.
Tumblr media
If this is the first time Phillip entered the Boiling Isles, then there was definitely a timeskip between this picture and the last. His hair is longer, he looks older, he has a bag and a journal, and he's wearing a whole new outfit. This looks like part of the outfit Phillip wore in Elsewhere and Elsewhen. He isn't wearing his brother's jacket, though, but he may be holding it with the arm that isn't shown well in the picture. I guess after Caleb ran through the portal, it closed and Phillip was trapped on the human side? And somehow, he managed to go through the portal again after a timeskip. He still looks young here. But more like in his late teens than early teens like in the last few pictures.
Tumblr media
Not sure what order these pictures should have come in, but this happened a lot later than the last pictures. Phillip's hair is already fading from brown to blond. Perhaps a side effect of palisman magic? Or maybe he's just graying weirdly.
Tumblr media
I've seen people point out this picture as Phillip misremembering "Luzura and Dirtrude" but now that we have more detail, they...really don't look like them. They're wearing nothing remotely similar to what Luz and Lilith wore in that episode. Plus, they both have their palismen. The only similarity is that one is tall with black hair and the other is short and has brown-ish skin. But they're both obviously demons. I assume these are just some followers he's trying to brainwash.
(Also, it's funny that they had black garbage bags even in the 1600s in the Boilins Isles lol)
Tumblr media
Phillip is going Sonic the Werehog on Caleb and his wife! I guess this means Evelyn did have brown hair. Unfortunate, because I kind of wanted the Clawthorne sisters to have inherited their red hair from Evelyn. Also, it looks like both Caleb and Evelyn were in possession of The Hair Skrungly. I wish Eda and Lilith also had it.
Tumblr media
This one's also really commonly talked about. Nothing much to add here just Phillip being outraged that his bro is slutting it up with a hot witch I guess.
Tumblr media
This one's also commonly talked about. What I'm unsure on is when all this happened. Phillip's beard is around the same length in the last few pictures so I assume at around the same time. But then, what? Did he see his brother with Evelyn and get mad, making the curse flare up, and after Caleb hugged it all out of him he left, only to come back later to kill Evelyn? Or did his curse flare up during the fight? I love those angsty fanarts where Caleb's trying to hug Phillip only to get stabbed. Also, why is Evelyn facing her husband, not Phillip? This is commonly thought to be Caleb trying to introduce his wife to his brother, so it would be weird for her to stand like that if that's the case.
Tumblr media
:((((((((( But also, where are they? Are they in Caleb and Evelyn's house? Why are they in a forest later, then? Maybe I just read too many comics of this scene where Caleb died in his house. They've probably been in a forest the whole time. But now that we have more detail, Phillip is very clearly not looking at Caleb, but to the side, where Evelyn would have been standing previously. Guess it's pretty much confirmed that Phillip wasn't trying to kill Caleb, but Evelyn. Also other people have mentioned this but Caleb fighting his brother to save his wife, using the knife he used to carve his brother's mask???? :'''''''')
Tumblr media
Again, when did this happen? Looking at it again, I feel like Phillip isn't even cursed at this point. At least, the curse isn't flaring up here. He's not goopified at all like in the show. You can even still see his sleeve. I think here, and the other picture where he looked like this, are just him looking extra demonic bc of how much he wanted to kill Evelyn. The picture where he's charging at Caleb and Evelyn looks like the background is on fire. And the couple is even positioned the same as the picture where Caleb is trying to "introduce" Evelyn to Phillip. Phillip wasn't out of control due to the curse in here, I don't think. It's lighting, plus dramatic effect that he looks like this. He found out where Caleb has been, flew into a rage and tried to kill Evelyn, and Caleb tried to hug him and calm him down, because his brother loved him anyway...
Tumblr media
...and in return, Phillip kills him. Caleb is posed the same way as the Boiling Isles is. Looking at the reflection in the knife, Phillip also hasn't been punched in the nose by Lilith yet, either. Guess those bones we see in Phillip's lab in Elsewhere and Elsewhen really were Caleb's. And also Phillip has already long since started his descent to madness by the time he met Luz and Lilith. Kind of weird to think that they may have run into one of Caleb and Evelyn's kids running around in that episode, if they happened to travel a bit beyond Bonesborough.
Tumblr media
We've seen this picture too but goddamn, they really did this over Caleb's dead body. Before I didn't agree with the idea that Evelyn gave Phillip his curse, because of the pictures we saw of him in black and having glowing eyes while Caleb was still around. But if All That was indeed for dramatic effect, then yeah, I believe the theory now! Evelyn Clawthorne still fucking up Phillip 350 years after the fact.
Tumblr media
So with Flora Desplora's appearance in Elsewhere and Elsewhen, her appearance here, and her name on the book Bill the titan trapper was reading in Edge of the World, I'm certain she was meant to be more important. Again, while I'm pretty sure The Shortening was announced after Eda's Requiem was finished, with how cartoons are produced, I wouldn't be surprised if they already had work done for episodes up to Reaching Out. It would explain the Azura B-plot in Any Sport in a Storm, the Edric B-plot in Reaching out when they couldn't give Emira a B-plot elsewhere to balance it out, the implication that Warden Wrath and other EC members were suspicious about the Day of Unity, and of course, Flora Desplora's existence. They probably established all of this expecting to have more episodes to explore it. But they got shortened and had to cut some follow up episodes. But they weren't given more resources to rewrite the old episodes to not include any plot threads they couldn't follow up on.
Flora Desplora didn't need a whole backstory and relationship with Lilith, as well as a whole character design, to serve her purpose in the plot. She just needed to be someone Lilith knew in the EC, who was doing better than Lilith was, and rile her up enough to do the whole time travel thing. Lilith already has a track record of mentoring multiple EC members-to-be. They could have had a character say they're her old student and accidentally rile her up. They could have done that with Steve. But originally, I guess they wanted to set up Flora Desplora to use her later.
Tumblr media
We already saw this picture too, of Belos mutilating his ear to look more pointed. But now that it's clearer uh...that's...that's his ear floating in the sink right there! He's a lot more blond than some other pictures, so I guess this is later into his conquest. But the green streak across his face isn't as big so I guess it isn't THAT late? Also, the mirror and sink look pretty fancy, so did he already have a castle by then?
Tumblr media
Here he is, carving some glyph combos onto his arm. He's bleeding green here, which I guess would be from Evelyn's curse? Either that, or the color palette, or the knife is rusty and Belos got tetanus after this. We never found out if the curse or these glyphs were responsible for his goopy appearance.
Tumblr media
He's snorting a palisman! This is still pretty early on in his journey, since his hair is still brown and his beard is shorter. In fact, it's only slightly longer than it was when Evelyn cursed him. Maybe this is when he discovers that palisman magic can help his curse?
Tumblr media
Ah, the Golden Guard graveyard. This was the guard in Belos's first flashback in Hollow Mind, where he blew up that town. Look at that collar. This Golden Guard's staff has been shattered, and he's probably being killed by Belos's own staff, red magic and all. Funnily enough, this Guard didn't have a staff in the flashback. Guess Belos made one for him at some point.
Tumblr media
Here's Belos's lab to make grimwalkers. Notice the ribcage in the background, probably Caleb's. I guess it's confirmed that you can use fragments of bone instead of just one whole bone, since some of the ribs are snapped. Guess Belos really did do the Biblical thing like some people said, where he used Caleb's rib to make a grimwalker. In fact, based on his outfit, this may have been one of the first grimwalkers he made. He probably ran out of rib bones by the time Hunter came around.
Tumblr media
People speculated that this Golden Guard was Darius's predecessor, who was likely petrified in the public ceremony that Kikimora mentioned happened 30 years ago in Young Blood, Old Souls. However, this Guard's outfit is the same as the one who was with Belos in the mountains. Phillip seems to have ditched his journal by this point, so Belos definitely knew the petrification glyph. This Guard also got a staff at some point when he didn't have on in the Hollow Mind flashback.
Tumblr media
Yo it's the guy with the really wild hair! You know, the one we saw as a hallucination in For the Future! Not much to say about him. He looks polite. Maybe HE was Darius's predecessor. He definitely has the Clawthorne genes with how his hair looks.
Tumblr media
Portal door! I don't think I actually saw this picture when I watched Hollow Mind? Guess I just missed it. Me and most of the fandom lol.
Tumblr media
And lastly, another golden guard. He looks like he's from Gurren Lagann lol. Maybe HE is Darius's predecessor. He's also being killed by Belos's red magic, it seems.
I think that's all the pictures? Feel free to chime in with anything that I didn't notice. These portraits kind of recontextualizes some of the fanon around the Wittebanes, I think.

JATP Anniversary Rewatch EP 5
Ohhhh the HGC... here we go...
"I always knew rich people did weird stuff like this," Reggie, I need that as like... a sticker or a tattoo or something, cause that's my life in the hospitality industry...
CALEB!! OTHER SIDE OF HOLLYWOOD!!!!
Okay the fact that those tables still look great without the tablecloths... Ugh okay I'm becoming my major again. Dang it.
All the costumes in the HGC are just *chef's kiss*!
The way Caleb only calls Willie 'Willie' around the boys, and always William when they're not around...
"Julie and the Phantoms?" "I had some free time in French Class."
Carrie, why are you going out of your way to be a jerk? Like she intentionally seeks Julie out to bother her... I don't get ittt!
Okay but I want Julie's outfit from this episode so bad!
"There's a lot to... like here," WILLIE I SEE YOU!!!
Lol the boys' little 3 part sales pitch for their revenge.
Okay but I get how Luke is so easily swept up in Caleb's spell at first, cause this may very well be the first time he's had an adult, especially an adult who is a musician/performer, encourage his performance dreams.
Boys and food, a love story as old as time itself.
Julieeee my girl, I swear I need to hug her!
Oh Nick, dude, I know you're trying to help but...
Also, Nick has now seen the 'projector' and turned it on and off. There's no way he isn't gonna have some questions as soon has he thinks about it. There's no way that light is gonna produce holograms on any kind of level like what happens when she performs with the guys. That guy is gonna question that...
The new guy found someone!!!
I feel like every time I watch this first HGC episode, I have more questions about Willie and his background there. Cause like... he genuinely enjoys the show. He has fun jumping in and dancing. He tells the guys they should come back for movie nights. But also... he knows about the stamp, he's clearly seen it in action before. He knows Caleb is dangerous, but he doesn't think he's a danger to Alex and the other guys, despite them having ghostly abilities that he's never seen before. I just... I have so many questions...
YO do the rhinestones on the lining of Caleb's jacket match the ribbons Julie wears in her hair a couple times?!!!
Yup boys suck. Flynn, you are a great bestie and I love you.
Julieeeee I wanna give you a huggggg!!!
Oof and there's the jolt...

@morenocaleb | Setting: John Miller's House | Local Time: 23:45
When the sound of Max's motorbike echoes in front of the house, or rather mansion, John diverts his gaze to the front area for a moment. "Where were we.", he goes back, "So, wins last month have been good. No special events. One of our guys is injured, but that's his own fault, and my son patched him up good. Have you met him yet? He's going to start studying medicine this year. Boy's told me recently. Made me mad proud. Was telling him he could do it all along. He's pushing thirty now. Still remember him as a little kiddo." (Though, there's not a single picture of him around the house.) What's to know about John Miller, is that he's not to be perceived as the man he truly is. Of course, violent, a brute, but just enough for his job. Just enough for a perfectly fine arms dealer. Mister fucking perfectly fine. "Actually, it might be him in the driveway."
And in fact, a moment later, keys jingle, the door opens, and Max calls out for his father. "Dad? You there?" Their voice is so similar, the way they speak, too. And then, Max enters the living room, leather jacket on, hear ruffled from the helmet he's put on the kitchen table, sweatshirt and pants on, looking like he always does, but Caleb has never gotten to see him this dead in his tracks. "Dad?", Max croaks out, staring at Caleb, because this is bad. Is he a traitor? Have they been friends all along? Because how come, the man who's apartment he's just left today's morning is sitting on his father's couch? Chatting? Yeah, my Dad's kind of fucked up. We fight real bad sometimes.
Tumblr media
"Max!", his father exclaims, and when he stands up to put his hands onto his shoulder, Max suddenly feels small. And looks small. John Miller doesn't see the color draining from his face at the following words; "Have you met Caleb? My boss. Your future boss. Brotherhood Underboss!"

Who is your favorite oc and what's their deal, and who are their friends?
ok first of all thank you for asking about my ocs I love to talk abt them even though I don't really do it a lot. they r so real to me...the plot and story is like mostly fully formed inside of my head (although only partially written down.) and i forget sometimes that they aren't real characters that everyone knows about...but now you can know about them! (sorry this is kind of rambly and not all that coherent. I have a lot of thoughts jumbling around in my brain)
(the rest is under a cut bc i wrote a lot)
so my main oc story (which is called teen spirit for now, but i might change it in the future) has a main cast of 5 people. Cat, (they/them) Caleb (he/him), Juno (she/they), Nathan (he/him), and Ellie (any/all). But out of all of them my favorite will always be Cat <3
Some fun facts abt Cat: they exclusively dress in warm winter clothes, no matter the weather. Puffy jackets, thick pants, boots with fur lining. They claim not to feel the heat. One time they end up in arizona and almost die of heatstroke. Cat pretends to be the braincell of their group but the truth is that they are just as impulsive as the rest of them, and its honestly a miracle they haven't been arrested yet. Anyways plotwise Cat has some sort of connection to the supernatural.
Ok first of all heres some basic lore. So there’s a mortal realm (regular old earth) and a spirit realm. Basically when someone dies they’re given five years as a ghost to tie off any loose ends. The only people that can see ghosts are people connected to said loose ends. Spirits are immortal beings that live in the spirit realm. Their job is to watch over the ghosts in the human realm, and run the real afterlife.
Anyways so Cat is connected to the supernatural. And later in the story this leads to them basically becoming a ghost magnet, which leads to fun things (losing the ability to distinguish whats reality and whats not) but anyways at the beginning it is easy things, such as finding a ghost in the basement of their school, where they broke into with their friends caleb and juno (i'll get to them. later.) and anyways the ghost they found was nathan, cast member number 4!
Cast member 5 is relevent now. Her name is ellie (any pronouns) (ellie is not his actual name, her real name is unpronouncable to humans.) So Ellie is a Spirit, but was punished by being sent to earth to live among humans as a mortal because she did the forbidden, brought a person back to life. (said person was juno's mother actually which leads to a lot of drama and tension between them.) So Ellie ends up crashing in Cat's backyard, creating a crater that is. difficult to explain to their parents. And ellie's appearance is not very long after they discover Nathan's ghost in the school basement. This is interesting because Nathan's death was not, in fact, due to natural or normal causes. It's because he, like Cat, was connected to the supernatural, and ended up seeing things that he was not supposed to be able to see. So the afterlife system decided the best thing to do was kill him! But he still has to get his five years on earth over with for his loose ends. (there was debate in the bereuacracy over whether they should bother with that or just send him straight to the afterlife, but they ultimately decided that the circumstances of his death were unusual enough that they should stick to standard procedures instead of changing more things.)
Anyways proximity to Cat allows Juno and Caleb to also be able to see nathan. And Caleb and Nathan specifically become very close. (its the tragedy u see. Nathan is dead. Nathan can't stay on earth forever, he's going to have to leave. He's not alive anymore but being with caleb makes him feel more alive than he ever was. They love each other but nathan continuously pushes back, doesn't let himself get too close because he knows it won't last.)
(i am talking a lot more than i intended to. oops) anyways the main plot is well it starts out with them trying to help Nathan tye up his loose ends so that he can just go to the afterlife sooner instaed of just hanging around for another couple years but then it shifts to realizing the fundamental issues within the afterlife system, which is exacerbated by Cat's interactions with the ghosts that they encounter (btw can u tell that the good place is one of my favorite shows.) They also just do fun high school shenanigans for the other half of the plot because my favorite genre is when something is a comedy with serious and tragic elements.
Characterwise the main dynamic between the original trio (cat, emily, and caleb.) Juno comes up with the dumb and reckless ideas. She is the one that encourages them to break into the school's basement in the first place, because she wants to see if the ghost rumors are true (they are). Cat is the one who makes the actual plans, who ensures that they don't get into any real trouble. Caleb is the anxiety, he's the one who actively discourages the plans, who voices the concerns. Except for when it comes to certain things, such as his not-so-secret obsession with the paranormal. When it comes to that he and juno are opposites, Juno is terrified of ghosts and hates the supernatural, caleb loves it, while with nearly everything else Juno is fearless and Caleb is terrified, and Cat provides the middle ground between them, as well as negotiating with the cops when they need to, which happens more than their parents would like.
I have more things I could say but this is getting out of hand so i will wrap this up but i love my ocs so much <3 I really should start talking abt them more lmao.
Anyways here is a collection of drawings of (mostly) cat from the past year:

“Seeing you happy is all that matters” + ReggieRayCaleb (bonus points if it’s set in your ABO au)
Ray knows that sometimes, Caleb simply indulges him. He likes spoiling his partners, sure, but sometimes he can't help but sigh and frown and put up some token of protest before giving in just so Ray knows he's being Indulged. As if Caleb ever does anything he doesn't want to. It’s one of the things Ray likes so much about him.
Most of the time, he later admits that yes, Ray was right, he did enjoy that movie, or café, or adventure, or even that bootfaced cat that stared off into space with its tongue hanging out.
"Seeing you happy is all that matters, darling," he'd say, and Ray would smile, and kiss him, and then drag him along into the next adventure.
Bringing home Reggie feels a little like that, except much bigger. He knows Caleb would never take on an Omega if he hadn't seriously considered it, if he wasn't absolutely sure he was willing to do whatever it took. He knew how Ray felt about the shelters, about the Registry. It was one of the things that had drawn him to Caleb, the fact that they felt the same way about these kinds of things.
Still, when Reggie clung more to Ray, when he shied away from Caleb with his big gestures, and Caleb just smiled, it felt a lot like that. Like this was something Caleb was doing for Ray, was giving him, instead of something they discussed and agreed upon beforehand. It had all gone so fast. (Another thing that Ray liked about his husband was how decisive he was.)
He can't regret it though. Not when he sees the beautiful soul Reggie is, slowly coming out of his shell. Not when they can talk for hours about music, about photography, about anything. Not when he gets to be the one to witness him beaming after showing off a trick he taught Pockets, which was a little miracle in and of itself. Not when he gets to be the one who holds him close when he's tired, or scared, or upset.
And especially not when he sees Caleb and Reggie slowly growing closer as well over the weeks and months. The way Caleb has toned down his gestures when at home, less the grand showman, but still just as captivating. The way Reggie hangs on his every word when he’s telling a story.
The way he's noticed Caleb starting to dress down on his days off, buying increasingly soft things in the hope that Reggie will steal them just like he steals Ray's threadbare flannels. The way Reggie seeks Caleb out when he can't sleep, sometimes dragging him out of his home office and into bed, something Ray has never been able to do in all their years together.
He especially likes seeing Caleb dote on Reggie, the omega slowly learning to accept it. It had taken a while for him to relax into their relationship, to know that they weren’t secretly waiting for him to mess up. That he was allowed to say no to things, but also that he was allowed to say yes to things, that he deserved them. Hell, that he was allowed to ask for things.
Which is probably how they ended up at the Animal Shelter Adoption Fair on a Sunday morning, Reggie dragging Caleb from cage to pen. Caleb keeps shooting him long-suffering glances, even though Ray can tell by the sparkle in his eye he is having the time of his life. It probably helped that Reggie was dressed not just in one of Ray’s old flannels, but also the beautiful leather jacket Caleb had gotten for him on a whim.
Finally, Reggie’s eye falls on a pen with a three-legged dog in it. He sinks to his knees on the grass, letting it sniff his fingers. “Hi puppy,” he says softly. Caleb starts reading the laminated sheet stuck to the pen.
“He’s three years old. It says here he lost his leg after being hit by a car when he was younger,” he reads out loud. Reggie’s eyes water, and all of a sudden Caleb was hit with two sets of puppy eyes, one inside and one outside of the pen. Ray can almost see his resolve crumbling, even though he’d been adamant when they left the house this morning that they were just going to look.
Ray wraps an arm around his husband’s waist. “I think he’s adorable,” he says, wriggling his fingers at the dog and smiling when it tries to lick them. Then, to really drive it home, he hits Caleb with his own puppy eyes.
They leave the fair with a bunch of new toys for Pockets, a big handmade denim patchwork dog bed, two bags of kibble, and Bucket the three-legged dog. As Ray is signing the paperwork, he can see Caleb and Reggie still near the pen, Reggie holding the leash of an equally excited dog. “Seeing you happy is all that matters, kitten,” Caleb says, pressing a kiss to Reggie’s temple as he beams proudly.
Yeah, Ray has no regrets at all.

okay here we go. basically everything that everyone else has been saying so😭
I have very mixed feelings about Brenner's death, the way they glamorized him and his character. I do think it was really interesting how they portrayed el's reaction cause he’s a horrid person and el holding his hand- he was her father figure (Stockholm syndrome kinda thing?) but the music and the wide shot and the way they were trying to pull at our heartstrings didn't sit very well with me.
not even talking about Eddie. I'm not ready. it's too much. the tragedy is no one was able to get over their prejudice and see Eddie as a person not this label they created for him and his death was for absolutely nothing. congrats duffer brothers I hope you're happy
mike. no. I can't talk about him. I literally couldn't tell you anything he did these episodes besides screaming "HOLY SHIT" every 0.2 seconds. his dumbass monologue- no. copy paste what will was saying. he's dumbing down el to be this dependent girlfriend who can't function without him and also saying the best day of his life was the day he met her/the day will disappeared in front of will? mike wheeler I was hoping you'd have a character death. OH AND can we talk about some of the parallels between mike and Brenner cause uhh. maybe I'm overthinking but the way they both talk to el doesn't sit well.
Steve's character crashed. which was so disappointing. however the jacket was really freaking hot and that was the best thing to come out of all this. but yeah ofc he's a family man but the way he went about everything? #notmysteve
can we talk about vecna's stupid monologue while el was tied up? like didn't we already know he was behind everything? why are we hashing it all out again? did literally nothing, total redundancy. I also got so sick of the "you're not the monster, he's the monster" "he's not the monster, you're the monster" back and forth. we've heard it we get it thank you
I hope gaten and Caleb and Sadie are recognized or get more appreciation because their performances were fantastic.
this is just the biggest stuff grrrr I'll have more after I sleep because holy fuck I don't know how to process this. I'm just mad. what are your thoughts
~🐢
omg hi babe i totally forgot to reply to this but i agree 100% with what you're saying. the plot fell flat, the characters fell flat, and v2 fell flat in general. it's infuriating and i think I've had enough time to process and accept the fact i'm never gonna be happy with how v2 turned out but i'm still mad about it

Based on this request: “Eric Coulter x Reader: Jeanine has the reader, she tries and escapes, but it just ends up with Eric, Four, and Peter rescuing her”
masterlist
Tumblr media
It’s quiet in the Amity compound, far too quiet for your liking. You’re sitting with your back against the wooden walls, and every moment that you spend waiting is one that you swear you’ll end up regretting. You’ve been on the run with Tris, Four, Peter, Caleb, and the other Abnegation for a while now, but every time you close your eyes, you see the Dauntless compound, the one place you’ve ever truly considered home.
You hear movement, and look over to see Tris sitting down next to you. She raises an eyebrow at you. “I came over to hear reassurances that everything is going to be alright, but I’m starting to think that I may have asked the wrong person.”
You laugh quietly. “No worries, Tris. I’m just thinking about Dauntless.”
Tris nods. “Who doesn’t?”
You sigh. “I just wish you got a better introduction to it. There’s a lot more that initiation, and you should have been able to find that out for yourself.”
You’re a few years older than Tris, and you’ve spent those few years falling deeper and deeper in love with your chosen faction. You graduated in the top of your initiation class, and took that opportunity to grab a position as a junior leader of Dauntless. You still drop in every now and then to help with leading combat classes or initiation, which is how you truly connected with Eric Coulter.
Eric. Even thinking about him feels wrong somehow, like by allowing yourself to remember how good it was back in Dauntless with him, you’re betraying your friends by not fully committing to the cause. It’s still hard to believe that he was one of the top guns of Jeanine’s mad scheme to control the Dauntless into massacring the Abnegation to take over the entire city, but yet the truth is plain before you, even without the Candor to say it.
You knew that Eric was cold and calculating, he always has been. He’s always been the first person in the room to rise for a gun, to never trust kindness but instead see what he could get from it. All the same, knowing that he was responsible for such cold-blooded killings hurts your chest like a stab wound. In the back of your head, some part of you whispers that it might not have been your Eric who did it, but it was. You can acknowledge that much, even if you don’t want to.
Who is your Eric, anyway? You’d first met him back in initiation, when he’d only been leading the training for a year at most. He’d noticed you then, you were sure of that, but the two of you had kept any contact to tips in practice and whispered words across meals. Once you’d graduated from initiation, you had finally let yourself fall for him, and you started dating soon after that.
It had been good then, hadn’t it? You came home from your respective jobs to a shared apartment. You wore his jackets when it got cold and he pretended he didn’t stare whenever you did. You traded knives and guns and weapons like love notes, and you reveled in every moment you were with him, because he made you feel powerful. That, in a place like Dauntless, was everything.
Then the fighting came, and you realized that he was behind all the bloodshed. It turned your stomach, especially to know that he would have killed you just like the other Divergent had you not withheld that one key truth from him. Had you not been just slightly disillusioned enough with the fantasy you lived with Eric, you wouldn’t have known that despite the fact that Eric would throw himself in front of a gun for you, he would be the one behind the trigger in a heartbeat had he known that you were Divergent. It hurts, to be sure, but it’s true.
Tris sighs, as if she can tell what you’re thinking. “I’m sure Eric is safe. I didn’t see him dead when we were leaving.”
You lean your head against the wooden panel behind you. “I’m not worried about him dying. I’m worried about what I’m supposed to do when I see him again. There’s no way Jeanine and her Dauntless forces would let us go easily. They’ll be after us soon enough, and he’ll be there.”
Tris puts an arm around your shoulders, and you fight the urge to lean away. Even after all this time, you’re not good at trusting people you don’t know. As it turns out, you’re even worse at trusting the people you do know.
“Hey, just take it easy. You’ve done a great job of getting us here, and I don’t want to lose you to doubt.”
You force a smile. “You won’t. I just need to get my head straight, and it’s already halfway there.”
Tris sees Four enter the room and leaves your side to go talk to him. You can’t deny that you’re a little relieved to be alone again. As one of the more senior Dauntless here, Tris and the others often look to you for help in staying undercover and what to do next. You can’t afford to get caught up in what might happen, or what Eric thinks of you now.
However, it appears that you won’t be able to fully come to terms with things after all. After what seems like barely any time, you hear the rumble of Dauntless trucks at the gates of Amity. You exchange startled looks with Four and the others, and start issuing out directions. Get the Abnegation to blend in. Have the more recognizable people- you, Four, Tris, Caleb, Peter, and Marcus Eaton, for a start, hide somewhere you won’t be found.
Soon, you find yourself tucked away into the second story of an Amity building, above the stables and near Johanna Reyes’ office. You can hear the pounding of footsteps draw ever closer. Then, you hear one sound above the din of everything else, one voice that makes you shiver despite the warmth of the Amity complex: Eric.
You’d recognize him anywhere. When you look up, you can see that same recognition in Tris’ eyes, although it does not carry the same level of guilt that hearing him does for you. You haven’t seen Eric since you escaped Dauntless. Although you’re not sure that he knew you were Divergent then, he most certainly will now. You can only hope that he won’t completely hate you for it.
What’s worse, Eric seems to be intent on coming up here, as if he can sense that Johanna is trying to keep him away. You can sense the nerves rising amongst your friends, and at last you whisper to them before standing up.
“I’ll get him away. If you guys leave near those windows, you can run before they find you.”
Caleb frowns. “How do you know that Eric will go after you?”
You offer him a half smile. “He will.”
Then, you turn, grabbing a dark hooded jacket from a nearby stack of clothes, and begin to silently descend the stairs. You draw up the hood over your face as you go; it wouldn’t do to be recognized by anyone except Eric.
Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Four starting to open the window and help people out, but that doesn’t matter now. What matters is Eric standing in the corridor before you, peering into the stables as if he can find Abnegation or runaway Divergent cowering inside. You have never been one to cower, and you’ll prove it today.
You call out to him. “Looking for someone?”
Eric turns sharply, then growls something into a walkie talkie at his side. “I’ve got one. The others could be nearby.”
Once the message is through, he begins to run towards you. You wait until his fist is almost inches away from your face, then duck, using his momentum to hurl him to the ground. Eric catches himself just before his back hits the straw-strewn floor and rights himself.
You attack next, and although Eric is expecting it, he isn’t expecting a second or third hit, all delivered in quick succession. However, this is as far as your good luck holds you. For one thing, you’re not truly fighting to hurt Eric, just to buy your friends time. Eric, however, is doing his best to take you down. He swings at your head and waits for you to duck before sweeping your legs out from under you.
His arm wraps around your waist, expertly flipping you against the wall. The impact stuns you for a second, pain jutting through you, and then Eric has a forearm against your throat, pinning you against the wood. His hand reaches for your hood, and then he draws back, eyes wide.
“Y/N?”
Eric sounds like he’s seen a ghost. You manage a quiet smile.
“Surprise.”
His hand rises to your cheek, as if checking to make sure that you’re actually there and he’s not hallucinating. “So you really are with them, then? I thought you said you would stay with me.”
You shake your head slightly. “I’m not against you, Eric, I’m just trying to stay alive. Would you fault me for that?”
Eric looks like he wants to say something more, but a shout comes from across the hallway and more Dauntless guards pour into the stables. One of them approaches Eric with a smile.
“Good work, Coulter. Jeanine wanted a Divergent, and we can use her.”
You don’t fight as the Dauntless bind your arms behind you. If Jeanine only needs one Divergent, there’s no reason for them to go after your friends. That means they’re safe, and that is enough for you.
Eric seems unable to move as he watches you get escorted out of the building with the guards. Something like regret burns behind his eyes, as if he wants nothing more than to take down the guards so you could leave. Eric must know something about what Jeanine wants, something he doesn’t want you to go through. You don’t fight the soldiers, and leave with your head high so he has nothing to do but watch you go.
You sit alone in a cell in the Erudite headquarters. There’s no way to tell how much time has passed, no way to tell if Four and the others know you’ve been captured or if they ran without looking back. You can only hope that they managed to get out alive. You, on the other hand? You don’t think there’s a chance of you getting out unless a miracle happens.
You’ve seen what Jeanine intends for you, and you have no idea how you’re supposed to survive it. She found some simulation, some test that you have to pass for each of the factions so she can unlock some big secret. You may be a Divergent, but you can’t help but worry that you won’t be good enough to pass all the tests and you’ll die once you fail. You’ve certainly seen your fair share of bodies leaving that room with bloodied noses and limp arms dangling from motionless joints, and you have a bad feeling that you’ll join their ranks soon enough.
You look up with a start when the door to your cell opens. You can’t help a surge of hope in your chest when you realize that it’s Eric, although he stays cold and emotionless.
“It’s time to go. Jeanine needs you.”
You nod, rising to your feet. Any day here could be your last. You could never return to your cell, if the simulation goes poorly. Does Eric think about that?
As you walk, you notice that you’re monitored by guards that follow you through the halls, albeit at a distance. Eric walks by your side, and after a few minutes, he begins to speak to you in a voice barely above a whisper.
“Why would you let yourself get caught?”
You shrug. “It makes sure my friends get out alive. Dauntless is about ordinary acts of bravery, isn’t it? Surely you can understand why I made this choice.”
He sighs. “This choice, yes. There are a few others I don’t get.”
You understand what he means without Eric having to elaborate. “I didn’t tell you I was Divergent because I didn’t know how you’d react. Eric, I saw you shoot Divergents in the head without a second thought. Is it really so surprising that I would hesitate about something like this?”
Eric looks angry. “Yes! Y/N, I love you. I wouldn’t kill you over something like this.”
You stare at him, all pretense of keeping it cool forgotten. “No? And what would happen if Jeanine put you under a simulation and found out that I told you that? What would happen when she realized that I was Divergent and you did’t seem surprised? Maybe you wouldn’t kill me in those situations, but you would have been killed just the same. There was no option where I saved both of us by telling you.”
Eric sighs, and reaches down to take your hand as you walk. “I know. I just- I wish I hadn’t found out through her. I wish I didn’t have to take you to your death every time you leave your cell. Just promise me that whatever happens, you won’t hate me too much.”
You frown at him as you come to a stop outside the simulation room. “What does that mean?”
He almost grimaces. “You’ll see.”
The door clicks open, and your eyes fall upon the people inside. There’s Jeanine, as expected, a few Dauntless guards, a handful of Erudite doctors. And there, in the corner- You shake your hand loose of Eric’s, ignoring the handcuffs binding your wrists or even the guns pointed your way. All that matters is getting to Peter Hayes and the vindictive sensation of hitting him so hard he falls to the ground, head thunking against the ground hard enough for his eyes to go dull for a second.
“You coward! I sacrificed my life so you could get away, and you switched sides again?”
You raise your bound hands and slam them into his head, again and again until the guards pull you away. Even then, it takes half a dozen of them to keep you off of him. Peter sits there, eyes wide, as a hand wipes blood away from his mouth and nose. He tries to say some stupid thing about how he’ll always choose the side with the upper hand, but you can barely hear it over the roar of anger pulsing through your veins. Across the room, you see Eric still at the door. You’d swear that he’s trying to hide a grin at your mutilation of Peter.
Jeanine clucks her tongue impatiently. “Come now, you know you won’t be able to get far with anything. Put her in the sim.”
Instantly, Eric’s face drops. “If she fails, it could kill her.”
Jeanine sniffs. “It will kill her, Coulter. Be specific. And honestly, I thought you’d be a little more pleased to hear about that. Didn’t she lie to you about being a Divergent? If you think about it, this is your payback.”
Your eyes slide to Eric. She’s not wrong, is she? You lied to Eric when you promised to tell him nothing but the truth. If Eric wanted to, he could sit back and watch you die, and be totally justified in it. Indeed, when he crosses the room to take a place near Jeanine, you swear that he is. Your heart seems to grow cold in your chest, like it’s forgotten how to beat.
Then Eric pulls out a gun, placing it at Jeanine’s temple. “That might work for you, but I’m a little different. Let her go.”
Jeanine laughs. “I didn’t expect you to be a turncoat, Coulter, but that doesn’t matter. You’re still vastly outnumbered.”
A voice sounds from the door. “He’s got a few allies. And we’re better than your traitor guards.”
When you look, you’re stunned to see Four, Tris, and a few other Abnegation standing at the entrance to the room, guns pointed at Jeanine. You can see the unconscious bodies of guards littering the hallway; during the argument, they must have been able to take down the traitor Dauntless unnoticed. It’s convenient that your fight with Peter happened, actually. It’s almost like Eric was able to time it just so that it happened at the right time.
You glance back at Peter and notice that he’s typing codes furiously into a nearby machine. Seconds later, the metal cuffs binding your wrists drop, and he tosses you a gun.
You stare at him incredulously. “Uh, sorry for breaking your nose. I didn’t know.”
Peter chuckles. “Tris would say that I deserve it.”
Tris grins from where she’s ridding the traitor Dauntless soldiers of their weapons. “You do.”
Eric, Four, and their allies now outnumber the Erudite guards, so you’re able to walk to Eric without worry. “You really planned all this?”
He smiles at you. “There was no way I was letting you die. Now come on, let’s go.”
Jeanine rolls her eyes, and you stiffen. You’d almost forgotten about her in the chaos. “You don’t really think you’ll be able to get out of here in time, do you? You’ll be discovered before you take two steps out of here.”
Eric nods. “Good point. That’s why I’m going to make sure we’re not going to get caught.”
Without another word, he knocks her out with the butt of his pistol, and Jeanine falls gracelessly to the floor.
Eric glances over at Four. “You said Marcus was getting Candor to capture Jeanine, right?”
Four nods. “She’ll be put on trial.”
Now that the immediate threats are out of the way, save for your escape, Eric pulls you into his arms. You mutter something into his shoulder.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.”
He chuckles. “We both have plenty of apologies to make, but I’m pretty sure that I have more. We should go, though. I don’t know how long we have until the Erudite realize we’ve broken in.”
Four nods. “As much as I hate to agree with Eric, he’s right. We should get moving.”
You can’t help but laugh at the irritated look on Eric’s face. “I’m surprised to see the two of you working together.”
Eric’s jaw twitches as the two of you start to leave the room. “I didn’t do it for him, I did it for you. I’m not letting us get separated again, Y/N, even if it means I have to work with him.”
You smile, and press a kiss to his cheek. “Anything. Let’s try again, shall we?”
It’s not a fresh start, you don’t need to erase all your history. You just want to keep going with him, and as it turns out, Eric wants the exact same thing.

Wow.
What is with this show and making me get genuinely invested in sportsball episodes?!
We have opened up some wild shit with the history of the Golden Guard as a position. It’s not invented for Hunter! I had definitely assumed that it was a title made up for him! So that means the mask might be a legacy mask? Which means the fact it looks like a goddamn barn owl might not be a coincidence? And the logo for it is the logo of Gravesfield, which is a whole other can of worms. Plus, the fact that Flapjack chirped right before Hunter gave the false name “Caleb” makes me think that it was his suggestion, which makes me think Belos’s brother was named Caleb. Okay that’s not much to go on but I’m really invested in it now.
I really, really enjoy Darius as a character. He reminds me of Odalia and Alador in that they do actually have people they’re warm to (Hunter for Darius now, each other for the Blights) and they’re charming to watch and have complexities and they’re still dreadful and fucking everything up. I find that super fun to watch. The goddamn patch-- I can’t believe that actually happened. I was just going “you know how I would write this to cater to me specifically” and then it HAPPENED. My god.
(I legit just put a new patch on my jacket yesterday. use the fusible adhesive only to hold it in place while you sew it on, twice around the perimeter with a zigzag stitch. I’m sure the B.I. have sewing machines but idk if Hunter has access to one)
I’m so glad Willow got to be in focus again! I’ve missed her, what a good girl. She’s grown so much and she’s working so hard to believe in herself and she’s wonderful. She’s stepping up to be the team captain, taking on the challenges presented to her. What a good friend, too; she saw in Hunter the person he didn’t realize he could let himself be.
god, at this point she’s gonna see him out and about with flapjack and fondly call him Caleb and Belos is going to walk in at that very moment like what the absolute fuck my child
Luz and Amity’s wild-goose-chase after the Azura author was a pretty transparent way to remove them from Hexside because they’d have recognized Hunter, but like with Luz’s common mold back in Eclipse Lake it doesn’t really bother me because it was fun and functional and made the plot work. They got to be adorable theorizing and leaning on each other and it’s really nice to get to see them going on a low stakes adventure, you know?
Man. This season really is wall to wall bangers.

scarlet welly boots
based off of this post spiral started by @flashhwing in which caleb is groundhog daying the day of essek’s execution
warning/s: angst, injury, results of off screen torture
title from the amazing devil song - welly boots, please forgive any errors, i’m still learning the mechanics of this world

They land hard, the breath forced out of them in a pained sudden whoosh. Caleb clutches Essek to his chest, shielding him and pinning the drow to the ground with his weight as he catches his breath.
The weak evening sun is almost blinding after the endless night of Rosohna and it takes a moment for him to adjust to the light, however soft it is, after being so used to the darkness. The winter rays and bitter bite of the cold wind are almost heavenly after months of the same terrible day over and over and over.
Caleb waits a beat.
And then another.
No attack is launched, there’s no rush of air being displaced as the Aurora Watch follow them with their own teleportation. Though how they would have he doesn’t know, not even Caleb has any idea where they’ve landed. He’s just grateful it worked. A brief respite against the continuing horror. Nothing truly gained from this loop except he doesn’t have to watch Essek die again.
He tightens his grip around Essek, ignoring the burn of a barely missed flurry of Eldritch Blasts across his back. The skin pulls in a familiar way, taught under the curled edges of his jacket. It’ll be gone with the sunset, as all injuries he’s acquired over the months have faded with the resetting day. He doesn’t let it bother him as he would have done.
“Caleb?” Essek murmurs into his shoulder tentatively. His fingers shake as they clutch at Caleb’s shoulders tight enough to hurt.
Caleb chokes back a sob at the sound of his voice. He turns his head, nose pressing into Essek’s neck painfully as he squeezes the wizard tight to him. It’s been far too long since he last heard Essek speak. The former shadowhand had always been silent on the dias, never pleading or begging for his life even on the few occasions Caleb had done so for him. He was always so resigned to his punishment, accepting his due with his head bowed and a silent scream as the spell struck him.
“You’re okay,” Caleb reassures softly, though for Essek’s benefit or his own he couldn’t rightly say.
Essek turns his head towards Caleb, struggling to put enough distance between them that he can catch Caleb’s eyes but Caleb’s grip is strong and Essek is weakened by weeks locked away before his public execution.
“You fool!” Essek cries quietly against his skin, voice cracking like shattered glass. “You complete fool, they’ll kill you!”
Caleb chuckles into Essek’s neck, the sound hollow and as brittle as he feels his mind is. Like the thin sheet of ice across a pond, snapping and cracking under the slow pressure of a foot waiting to drag him down in the cold dark water beneath.
“This is nothing to laugh at,” Essek scolds him.
“I’ve already died,” Caleb mutters, remembering the failed attempts and the few times he stood side by side with Essek upon the raised dais, fingers stretched out towards one another for the briefest touch of comfort.
“What?”
“Several times in fact.” Caleb continues in a matter of fact tone.
“You’ve gone mad,” Essek rolls his eyes and Caleb shakes his head slowly, savouring the way their noses bump together softly. No doubt Essek is recalling the few times the Mighty Nein have stumbled and fallen in their adventures and not the one memorable time Caleb got tackled out of a window by an Echo Knight trying to save Essek’s life for the umptenth time.
“I am stuck in some kind of loop, reliving this day over and over,” Caleb sighs and Essek tenses under him. He’s quiet for a long time.
“What?”
“I have watched you die…” Caleb’s voice fails him and he rests his forehead against Essek’s letting the warmth of his skin and his soft breaths against Caleb’s lips pull him away from the teetering edge of his sanity.
“Caleb,” Essek whispers, his voice full of concern as his hands slide up Caleb’s neck to cup his face gently.
“Too many times schatz, too many,” Caleb finishes brokenly and Essek flinches as a tear drops against his cheek. He gently rubs away the tears that follow as his breaths come in shaky controlled bursts.
“A time loop?”
“Ja.”
He’s quiet again as the implication settles in his academic mind and Caleb waits patiently for him. He has time, he has all the time in the world. He just can’t seem to do what he wants with it.
“Help me up,” Essek demands quietly and Caleb can’t deny him anything though he doesn’t particalurly wish to lose the closeness. He stumbles to his feet, keeping a tight hold on Essek as they stand shakily in the evening light. The clearing is touched by morning frost that the day’s light hasn’t managed to melt and the mountain range in the distance is vaguely familiar to Caleb but he has no interest in finding out why. He’s more focussed on the man before him. Essek is thinner than he had been before the arrest, his skin a pale sickly lilic instead of it’s usual rich violet. Dark, violent splotches of deep red peek out from under the ill fitting uniform and Caleb shies away from the desire to burn the dungeons and its guards to ash. It would be so easy to seek revenge, so gratifying.
The lack of consequences has been a temptation he has fought against for a while now, one that has only grown in strength the more times he’s been forced to watch Essek fall. Caleb isn’t sure how much longer he can last. How many more loops before he stops caring about the collateral damage? How many more before he stops being a man his friends can recognise?
“You didn’t start this?” Caleb checks, though he’s long suspected a third party’s hand in this.
Essek raises his manacled wrists, the runes etched into the dark silver cuffs catching the fading light, “I couldn’t even if I’d wanted to.”
“Then who?” Caleb groans, letting his forehead rest against Essek’s again. His fingers clench and relax around Essek’s biceps, marvelling at the twitch of the muscles and warmth of his skin through the threadbare prison clothes. Physical proof that Essek lives and breathes in his arms, if only for a moment.
“An enemy? Someone who wants me to suffer,” Essek suggests.
“And me,” Caleb adds and Essek inhales shakily.
“Caleb…”
“Yes?” Caleb asks, hopeful.
For a moment the world pauses, possibility frozen on the edge of a cliff and all they have to do is step away from the solid ground beneath them to reach it. Essek’s mouth opens with intent before he thinks better of it, his fingers clench in a tight fist against Caleb’s chest. Touching but not grasping at him as he so clearly wants to do, “...We should figure out how to break this time loop,” he offers eventually, sounding defeated and frustrated with himself.
Caleb feels a tendril of disappointment but he remembers that Essek does not have the benefit of time that Caleb has endured. For Essek it’s been a day, for Caleb, he’s had months to develop the courage to face the truth of his own heart. He simply needs time. Time Caleb so depesratly wants to give him.
“I’ve been trying, nothing has worked.”
“Would my work be of any use?”
“Not even the Aurora Watch can get past your wards, it would take me-”
“The password is nein, speak it clearly and the door to my private study will open,” Essek’s cheeks darken as he avoids Caleb’s eyes. It warms Caleb’s heart that Essek trusts the Nein to protect his life’s work and then his heart cracks a little as he realises how they can’t even protect Essek’s life.
“Ja, I can do that,” he says, swallowing thickly against the torrent of emotions storming his chest.
Essek coughs, clearing his throat and the air of the momentairy vulnerability, “If that’s of no use then you’ll need to seek additional allies.”
“I’ve already told the other’s, how do you think I got close enough to do this, this time?” Caleb smirks sharply, the day may be the same but the chaos his friends unleash every time is completely unique and somewhat enjoyable.
“I meant experts,” Essek corrects softly with a fond small smile, no doubt recalling the circumstances around his escape.
“You’re the expert.”
“And yet, I can not recall such a spell,” Essek admits, brow furrowed.
“You expect others to know when you don’t?”
“It’s possible,” Essek says and he sounds as though he believes it as much as Caleb.
“And if that fails?” Caleb asks because he can’t watch Essek turn to dust again, he can’t, he just can’t. He needs something, anything to keep him away from the dias.
Even though he knows he’ll go again and again so Essek won’t be alone. Because the thought of Essek standing there waiting for the end and thinking Caleb has forsaken him and convincing himself he deserves it in his final moments, is almost worse than the pain of watching him turn to ash to be caught in the wind.
“Divine intervention?” Essek snorts and Caleb can’t help but feel a lead weight fall into his gut as even Essek struggles to find more than a couple of vague ideas and a possible dead end.
“If that’s what it takes,” Caleb whispers and it sounds like a promise.
“Caleb,” Essek says, like the prayer of a man with no faith in any god, just faith in the man before him. It feels like benediction. It feels like false hope. An empty temple with cold pews. Caleb has failed so many times, so many people, that Essek standing before him feels more like another sacrifice on a blood stained altar than a blessing.
And yet he continues, hoping for a different outcome each time.
“Sun’s down, time’s almost up,” Caleb says, feeling the cold settle in his bones again as the shadows grow around them. A silent scream full of dread lodges itself in his throat.
Not again, not again, not again, please not again… he buries the words deep down and they claw and tear at him as he does. These wounds stay, even as the day resets and he knows eventually he’ll bleed out.
Essek clutches at him tightly, as though Caleb is going anywhere, “If you find a way to break this, do it.”
“I will,” Caleb promises and Essek shakes his head slowly.
“Even if I don’t survive this,” he says gently and Caleb recoils as though he’s been struck.
“Nein-”
Essek holds fast, grabbing at Caleb’s face, the manacles clinking together like the chimes of a clock, “Yes, yes. I will not have you suffer needlessly for a lost cause.”
“Essek-”
“Promise me Caleb, promise me,” Essek begs and Caleb opens his eyes and stares into Essek’s. He lets him see the fire within, the rage and anguish and most importantly the steel core that will not bend, not even to Essek’s pleading. Caleb would rather lose himself than give up.
“Nein,” Caleb growls firmly.
“Caleb-” Essek’s voice catches and Caleb crushes Essek to him, slamming their lips together in a brutal kiss full of desperation and despair. He won’t make that promise. He can’t make that promise. Even if he’s crumbling under the weight of it all, he can not let Essek die. Not when there’s a chance, no matter how slim, that he can save him. Caleb can not and will not bury another person he loves.
Essek struggles against him for a moment before surrendering with a choked sob, his fingers curling tightly in Caleb’s stained shirt as he kisses him back just as fiercely. Caleb ignores the tears they both shed, they have just a moment together and then…then Caleb has work to do.
fancy sending me a cuppa?

Megan's Master List
All of my works are on AO3 @Geeksquad2o, and all of the stories listed below are links to AO3.
JULIE AND THE PHANTOMS
This Band Is Back Series
Be sure to read these ones in order!
Bring Me To Life
Like with most things, the signs started showing up slowly. So slowly, in fact, that at first nobody noticed. Alex would bite his nails when he was anxious, and they started to grow back. Luke started needing to push his hair out of his eyes. Reggie found himself getting cold without his jacket on. Little things that would have meant nothing if they were still human, but meant quite a lot for ghosts
Or: The boys are starting to change, which they're pretty sure isn't supposed to happen to ghosts. And they are still ghosts. Right?
But I Always Thought That I'd See You Again
When the boys died 25 years ago, there were quite a few people that they left behind. After coming back as ghosts, they'd made their peace that there was nothing they could really do about that now. But now that they've come back to life, they have a chance to reconnect with their old families. The question is: Do they all really want to?
The Singers of the Lullabies
Rose Molina had died with no unfinished business, but a lot of secrets. Tragedies lived and experienced that her family had no idea about. She died with no unfinished business, but a lot of people left behind. She died with no unfinished business, but when her daughter came face to face with the most dangerous ghost in the world, Rose realized she wasn't finished.
All My Life I've Been Good But Now
The stories always stop at the miracle. But what happens when the miracle is over, the ones once dead have been brought back, and now everyone has to return to business as usual? For Luke, Reggie, and Alex, this second life brought with it a whole new set of challenges. First and foremost? High school.
You're Just Harder To See Than Most
Everything about Julie and Luke's relationship was pretty perfect, but the same couldn't be said about the love lives of the other Phantoms. Alex was beginning to realize that he was, essentially, in love with cute air. And Reggie? He was going through a crisis. A couple of crises, actually. At least someone is happy though.
Something's Gone Terribly Wrong
Julie, Luke, Reggie, and Alex had finally started to feel secure. They'd found love, they had each other, and the boys had been settling into the land of the living spectacularly. Which, of course, means that it was time for a certain Caleb Covington to pop back into their lives for one last showdown that would bring all the old ghosts out of the woodwork, and reveal to all who Caleb Covington really was.
Other Jatp Works
So If You're Asking Me I Want You To Know
When Julie finally works up the courage to tell Luke she loves him, it doesn't go quite as she expected. When Luke tries to explain to her exactly what it was that caused him to freak out, he finds he can't really figure out the words. So he does it the best way he knows how: in a song.
I Wanna Feel All That Love and Emotion
Luke struggles to find the right thing to do. Everyone can see what he can't, and Julie can't wait forever. Maybe one day, buddy.
Cobra Kai
Don't Look At Me, You've Got A Girl At Home (And Everybody Knows That)
Hawk's just won the All-Valley, and he feels on top of the world. Despite the fact that not everyone had quite as good of a tournament, Demetri insists that they've gotta celebrate. Things get a bit complicated though, as it turns out that Demetri with a little too much alcohol is a Demetri with way too little thought process.
The Critical Chapter
Phone calls and confessions. "I rewatched your favorite Doctor Who episode" really means "I love you." Maybe Yasmine is right about some things...
Harry Potter
Take What I Can and Then Die in the Dirt
Because who doesn't sit around at 17 with their best friends imagining the end of the world? If only that end of the world scenario wasn't quite so close to home for the Marauders...
Stranger Things
I Think You're Seeing Right Through Me
80s movies, confessions, and confusions. Mike Wheeler deserves emotions. Charlie Sheen, anyone?

“No music is worth making if we’re not making it with you two.” You closed your eyes, letting the feeling of being this close to Luke linger in your mind before you opened your eyes and locked on with his. “No regrets.” He whispered and you nodded, slowly pulling yourself from his grip. Luke grew confused, reaching forward to hold you again.
“Then I’m sorry for what I’m about to do.” Your eyes moved about the three boys and Julie before you were gone.
“Y/N!” Your brother yelled out at your absence, hoping by any chance you didn’t truly leave them before saying goodbye. “Y/N!”
“Reggie.” Alex mumbled out his name, holding his stomach in pain and Reggie’s already tear-filled eyes snapped to his and the tears started falling.
“Where’d she go?” His voice cracked. “She just left- Where’d she go?” No one provided him with an answer. “Luke?”
“I don’t know.” Luke’s eyes hadn’t moved from the very last spot he was able to look into yours, his own tears now springing free.
“Do you think she’s coming back?” Reggie asked despite knowing you wouldn’t. He couldn’t help but hope you would. He was dying and he needed to say goodbye to you. Earlier, he thought he could just leave and you’d never know the difference, but now, he needed to say goodbye to you.
Another round of jolts hit the three ghost boys.
“You’ve got to go!” Julie cried out. She thought she couldn’t handle seeing the boys in such pain with you by her side, but now that you were gone, she had no one to help convince them. The boys laid on the floor, none of them knowing if they were in too much pain to stand or just gave up trying. Julie fell to her knees next to them. “Please, just go to Caleb.”
“I never told Y/N how I felt.” Luke’s eyes were closed as he wiped away the tears quickly, his mind focused solely on you. No regrets, he told you. Well, now he had one. He had no clue where you were or what you were doing and he just wanted you here with him. He wanted to say goodbye. He wanted Reggie to say goodbye, and Alex. He wanted to know that with whatever happened to them, you knew the truth.
Luke’s thoughts of you were interrupted by a feeling inside him. It was much different than the jolts. Instead of bringing them pain and agony, this feeling was nothing but relief and for the first time since Luke was on stage, he felt like he could breathe again.
“What’s happening?” Reggie whispered as Luke opened his eyes, seeing himself as well as his friends glowing. Everyone was silent, tears still falling as they held their breaths.
“I feel stronger.” Luke rose off the floor, looking down at himself as Reggie and Alex stood up with him.
“I don’t feel as weak anymore.” Reggie glanced between his friends with a skip of relief in his voice.
“Me neither.” Alex smiled briefly. “Not that, you know, I was ever weak.” He earned a chuckle out of his friends.
Julie watched on in disbelief. One second ago, they were all dying, and now, out of nowhere, they were strong again. The boys felt the change in their wrists all at once as they held up their arms and pushed their sleeves out of the way, except for Luke. They let out small gasps as the stamp that has caused them so much pain and suffering emitted a light before slowly lifting from their skin into the air. With no information on what was happening, the four of them watched as the stamp fizzled into nothing, right along with Caleb’s control over them.
“What do you think that means?” Julie broke the silence before the boys laughed happily, looking amongst themselves before Julie.
“I think the band’s back.” Luke told her and out of pure happiness, Julie jumped into their arms. Her arms pulled Alex and Reggie into the hug as her body met Luke. The boys didn’t hesitate to hug back, not catching onto the plain and obvious fact that Julie was touching them.
Julie caught on, however. She pulled away, looking at how her hands rested on Reggie and Alex’s shoulders to bring them close. “How can I touch you?” She gasped out, testing to make sure she could feel them under her hands.
“I don’t know.”
“Maybe we could try that hug thing again?” Alex asked rather blushingly, a way to celebrate not being completely dead from the universe. The other three obliged and dove into another hug full of laughs and smiles until Luke pulled away slowly, breaking the other’s hold on him.
“Luke?” Julie asked after seeing his face fall. “What’s wrong?”
He looked at her before his eyes moved to Reggie. “‘I’m sorry for what I’m about to do.’” He said and the boy furrowed his brows, not catching onto what Luke was talking about. Luke let out an exasperated sigh. “It’s what Y/N said to me before she left.”
“You think my sister had something to do with this?” Luke stayed silent, but Reggie knew what he was thinking. “No. No, she wouldn’t do that.”
“Reggie-“
“No!” He denied again, turning around to face away from the boys and Julie. As he did so, his eyes landed on your jacket once again that you’d taken off in exchange for your new one, draped across the back of the couch. He shook his head and felt tears cloud his eyes again.
“Maybe it wasn’t her.” Alex moved to Reggie, putting a hand on his shoulder to comfort him. Reggie turned to him, silently asking him if he believed his words. “Maybe she just left because she couldn’t be here.”
Reggie nodded for a moment before shaking his head. “There’s no way Y/N just left.” Reggie whispered before falling into the chair next to him, feeling Luke’s hand land on his other shoulder. “What did she do?”
Alex looked to Luke, seeing him in a state of deep thinking much like Reggie and while Alex was desperately worried about you, he knew neither boy was alright after your absence and possible connection to them being free. He looked to Julie, hoping she could offer help but as he looked up, his eyes scanned past her to the entrance of the studio.
His heart skipped in his chest. “Willie?” He called out before dropping a hold on Reggie’s shoulder and running to the boy, their bodies colliding together only a second before their arms pulled the other as close as possible.
“You’re okay.” Willie whispered out in thanks as he buried his face in Alex’s shoulder, feeling Alex do the same to him. Willie was the first to pull away, his hand slipping into Alex’s perfectly as he pulled him to where Reggie, Luke, and Julie were. He looked to the girl who looked surprised to see him. “You must be Julie.”
“I am.” She nodded. “You must be Willie, and I’m not even going to question how I can see you right now.”
Willie gulped. “Well, I might have an answer to that.” The four of them furrowed their brows at him. Willie sat Alex down on the couch and sat next to him, Julie and Luke slowly falling into seats as well since Reggie was already sitting, still fretting over you. The skater took a deep breath. “Y/N showed up at the club.” He looked around the room, gaging their reactions as Alex’s grip on his hand tightened. “She made a deal with Caleb.”
Your friends listened to Willie explain everything, from you showing up and demanding to speak to Caleb, to him listening with his ear pressed against the door as you practically gave your soul to him in exchange for the four of them, and to your very first performance at the club, something Willie couldn’t stay for as he ghosted out to find the boys.
“She gave herself up for us?” Luke clarified; his eyes locked on the floor as he imagined you doing exactly what Willie described. He felt sick. You did the very last thing Luke could’ve wanted. He wanted you to be happy and stay with Julie and both of you think the boys crossed over, now Caleb had your soul and forced you to be a part of his band for eternity. “We’ve got to save her.”
“You can’t.” Willie reminded him. “Caleb’s too powerful.”
“There has to be something we can do.” Reggie agreed with Luke. There was no way he was going to leave you, his sister, in the hands of Caleb.
“There’s not.” Willie refused to lift his eyes to look at them. “I’m sorry.” Alex squeezed his hand, but Willie still couldn’t look at him.
“It’s not your fault. And it’s not Y/N’s either, she was just trying to save us.”
Luke’s leg was bouncing as he jumped up and started pacing, finding Alex’s habit very head-clearing. “We can’t just leave her there.” His voice was stressed as he talked through his pain, not the same physical pain from the jolt but a pain in his heart that hurt a hundred times more.
Heads turned at the sound of Ray shouting outside of the studio, probably sticking his head through the gate. He shouted Julie’s name before telling her they were waiting for her to celebrate. Julie’s eyes widened as she remembered she was supposed to celebrate with her family who was oblivious to the situation.
“I’ll be there in a minute!” She shouted back before looking at the boys. “I have to go.” Her stomach fell. “I can’t really tell him my friend who’s been dead for 25 years traded herself to a ghost club to save my band.” She was upset and everyone could see but it wasn’t as if Julie could do much. They didn’t know what she could see or do in the ghost club. She started to stand up before hesitating, putting a hand on Luke’s shoulder. “Get her back.” She told him and he nodded, reaching up to grab her hand briefly before she wiped away her tears, trying to fix herself up before she went inside.
When she was gone, the boys sat in silence for a few seconds before Reggie stood up and took a deep breath. “So, what’s the plan to save my sister?”
---
You weren’t sure if the fatigue you faced as you sat backstage was from the 4 songs you just performed or from trying not to cry, but the longer you sat there, the harder it was to hold back your emotions. You were exhausted as you pulled yourself up, kicking off the heels Caleb put you into and finding a little corner you could collapse on the ground. The moment you hit the ground, you let your sobs rack through you.
You never got to say goodbye to your friends. You just left them there crying. You didn’t even know if Caleb really let them go or if… or if you were too late. You haven’t seen Willie since you asked him to bring you to Caleb and that was the only hope you had.
“Y/N!” You heard Caleb sing out your name, only making you suck in a breath, swiping under your face to see the makeup you were wearing hadn’t smeared. “Y/N!” He called again and you tried to stand up, ignoring the wobble of your legs under you. Caleb came around the corner and your eyes narrowed at the smile on his face. “There you are!”
“What, did I run away before another song could start? My bad.” You started walking away from him, your heels hitting your sides as you carried them, no longer wanting to wear them.
Caleb appeared in front of you with a smirk as you stopped walking and clenched your jaw. He offered a forced laugh and put his hand on your shoulder to turn you around. “I was going to show you to your dressing room.”
“How thoughtful of you.” you grumbled as he brought you to a backstage area that resembled the many dressing rooms you’ve been in before. This one had to be one of the nicer ones, you’ll admit that. You let your eyes scan over the room from the vanity in front of you to the line of costumes by the door to the plate of fries that sat on the table. You eyed the plate carefully, wondering why it was there before Caleb laughed quietly at you.
“Try some.” He gestured to the fries before picking one up and eating it himself with satisfaction. You’d forgotten the boys mentioned food here being something ghosts could eat.
“I don’t want any.” You turned your back to Caleb and the food as you walked to the mirror, finally seeing what you looked like after your little transformation.
“Well, I’ll leave you to get comfortable.” He said before heading to the door. He stopped in the door, meeting your gaze as you looked through the mirror. He didn’t say anything, but the smirk on his face was enough and when the door was closed, you allowed yourself to sit in the chair placed perfectly in front of the mirror.
Your eyes drifted across your appearance. The dress that clung to your body enough to look flattering and the makeup that made you look more like a showgirl than a teenager. You didn’t look like you. Pulling open the drawers under the mirror, you found makeup wipes and quickly wiped them across your face, trying your best to get all the makeup off until you could look in the mirror and see yourself. At that point, you needed to get out of this dress. You were going to try and find the most comfortable-looking costume to change, but your eyes landed on a certain outfit hung up that made you knot your brows.
You grabbed it slowly, pulling it out to see a tank top with the Sunset Curve logo printed on the front, a shirt you definitely didn’t own, along with a pair of ripped black jeans. What caused you to pause entirely was your leather jacket sitting on a hanger next to the outfit along with a note from Caleb.
For your comfort. Enjoy.
You scoffed. Sure, you were thankful for the change of clothes, but nothing could make you enjoy this place. Not performing, not a plate of fries or your private dressing room, and definitely not clothes. But it wasn’t like you could back out of the deal.
---
“Let’s just go get her!” Luke held back his shout after the millionth hour of trying to figure out a plan.
The other 3 boys, as well as Julie, groaned at him. “We can’t!” Alex reminded him and Reggie who was nodding his head in agreement with Luke.
“And why not?”
“Because she got the stamp.” Willie mumbled, his head resting back on the couch as he stared up at the ceiling. “If you just take her, the stamp could still-“
“Kill her?” Reggie interrupted with worry and Willie gave him a sad look before nodding. “So, there’s really nothing we can do?” When no one answered him, Reggie knew it was pointless. You were gone. “Can I-“ He stopped himself, glancing at his friends, “Is there a way we could say goodbye? For real?” He asked Willie and the skater thought about, how he would go about it but ultimately, he nodded.
“I’ll see what I can do.”
---
Willie was pacing back and forth in front of the Hollywood Ghost Club, trying to work out the plan in his head. He was just about to head inside before he was stopped by Caleb appearing in front of him.
“Caleb!” He gasped out, jumping backward as the man looked at him unimpressed.
“I believe I let you leave. Why could you possibly be back?” Caleb raised a brow at him and Willie gulped.
“Well, I-“ He cut himself off, the fear of working under Caleb returning and he wanted to poof away. Then he thought of Alex, of how Alex seemed so hopeful to at least see you again and know you were okay and he knew he couldn’t just give up because he was afraid. “It’s about Y/N.”
“What about her?”
“The band wants to say goodbye to her.” Willie held his head up, making Caleb smirk.
“Is that all?” Caleb asked and Willie’s face faltered for a second before he nodded. “No.” Willie’s face fell entirely as Caleb started to turn back to the door.
“5 minutes!” Willie pleaded and Caleb stopped moving. Willie thought he was going to keep walking until his back straightened and he looked over his shoulder at the boy.
---
You were crashed on the couch, staring at the ceiling above you and imagining it was the stars, back to last night when you thought you were saying goodbye to your family, the last time you felt peace. A knock broke through your silence as you groaned and pushed yourself up only to open the door to see Caleb standing there.
“What do you want?” you let him into the room, moving to lean on the wall next to the door.
“I have a surprise.” Caleb smiled at you. “I hope this will help you realize we’re not enemies here.” His hands fell on your shoulders and the smile he offered you unnerved you. You had no clue what he was giving you and that scared you. “You have 5 minutes.” He stepped back, giving you another smile before waving his hand and snapping toward the middle of your room.
Your breath stopped as Reggie, and Alex all appeared out of nowhere. The sound of the door closing as Caleb stepped out knocked you from your frozen stance as you launched yourself into Reggie’s hold.
Tears were already starting down your face as he cradled your head against him, his arms wrapped around you so tight that you were sure you weren’t breathing, but it was fine because technically you were already dead.
“You’re here.” You whispered to him, squeezing him tight to reassure yourself that your brother and the others were really here. “You’re all here.”
“Did you think we were just going to let you leave without saying goodbye?” Alex asked, holding back his cries. You pulled your head up, looking over to him and smiling as your tears fell.
“Where’s Julie?” You knew the answer as soon as you asked it and you shook your head to tell them so. Caleb couldn’t bring Julie in here because she, thankfully, wasn’t a ghost. “I’m really sorry. For everything.” You told them, glancing between Reggie and Alex. You couldn’t bring yourself to look at Luke, if you did, you didn’t know what you would say. “I couldn’t let you guys die.”
“So, you gave yourself up to Caleb?” Reggie asked as he pulled back, wiping away the tears on your face and not caring about the ones on his own. You looked into his eyes, feeling your heart sink as you nod.
“I couldn’t let you guys die.” You repeated before Reggie pulled you into his arms again. When he was done, you moved to Alex, seeing him fight the waterworks and he’s no doubt struggling. You spared him, slipping into his hug as he held you quickly, his face buried against your shoulder and you knew he was trying to wipe his eyes behind your back.
You were starting to lose track of the time as you realized you were almost through your time and you couldn’t help the cry that escaped as you looked at the clock. Now it was time for the hardest goodbye, the only person you never got to say everything you’ve wanted to.
Luke stood there as you said goodbye to everyone except him, as you looked at everyone except him, as you spoke to everyone except him and he didn’t know how he held himself together for that long. You were right there in his arms reach and Luke didn’t know what to do or to say.
Your eyes met and the tears Luke had let fall free felt heavy on his cheeks as you stepped closer. Your eyes flickered down to his hands enough for him to bring his to yours. When you felt his touch against your hand, your fingers fell into place between his and Luke and you stepped even closer, the room falling absolute silent. You just stared at each other, no words or goodbyes being said until you threw your arms around his neck and his went around your waist to hold each other close.
You thought you were going to break in your brother’s hold but it was nothing compared to the way you sobbed into Luke’s shoulder, feeling him do the same. It was as if his touch opened the floodgates and there was no way you could close them.
“I’m sorry.” Luke managed to choke out as he buried his face in your shoulder, his eyes closing but doing nothing to stop the tears that slipped past.
“Why are you sorry? You did nothing wrong.” You pulled away to look in his eyes, your hand cupping his cheek softly, your fingers dancing against his skin as Luke shook his head.
“I should have told you something a long time ago.” Your head tilted as you tried to figure out the meaning behind what he was saying, but you didn’t know how much longer you could hold your secrets in for every second the clock ticked behind you, you felt your mind going crazy.
“I have something I need to tell you, too.” You told him and Luke nodded, tightening his grip on your hand.
“C-Can I go first?” He stammered and you gulped before nodding, glancing at the clock before meeting his eyes. When you did, you recognized the look in his eyes. It was the same one you wore when you looked at him.
Luke didn’t say anything. His mouth hung slightly open, but he didn’t know how to express the feelings he held for you. He wanted to listen to Alex and Reggie’s advice and just blurt out ‘I love you’, but it didn’t feel like enough. So, he thought and he remembered a time he truly knew he was in love with you, when the two of you were connected beyond anything he had felt with anyone.
Step into my world, Bittersweet love story ‘bout a girl,
Your breath hitched as Luke started singing, the same song you sang together just days ago. You were so lost in each other that you forgot the rest of the world existed. It was just you two.
Shook me to the core, Voice like an angel, I've never heard before,
Your hand threaded with his again as you stepped back, slowly falling into the trance of Luke and you once again. Reggie, Alex, Caleb, the ghost club; everything faded away until it was just you two staring into each other’s eyes and never wanting to look away.
Here in front of me, Shining so much brighter than I have ever seen,
When you started singing, your feelings put into the song, Luke knew Reggie was right. Your feelings were the same as his and Luke waited all this time for nothing, he could have told you the truth a long time ago. But now is better than never. With his one hand still holding yours and his other wrapped around your waist, Luke let his forehead fall against yours.
Life can be so mean, But when he goes, I know he doesn't leave,
Your voice cracked as Luke and you started to sing together and you barely got a few words into the next verse before you stopped and cried out and said what you’ve wanted to say for years.
“I’m in love with you.”
For a moment in the room, amongst the four heartbroken teenage ghosts, it was as if time froze. Your eyes were closed and your head dipped in relief. Had your eyes been opened, you would’ve seen Luke’s eyes light up and his lips pull into the soft smile you’ve fallen in love with. Instead, you only heard him whisper back, “I’m in love with you, too” before his lips hit yours.
The kiss shared between the two of you was effortless and it was simple. You didn’t have to think with him. Luke’s grip on you never faltered, pulling you close to him as he let go of your hand to cup the bottom of your jaw toward the back of your neck, tugging you closer to him as his fingers gently tangled in your hair. You lost yourself in the feeling, kissing Luke back with everything you had in you.
You didn’t want to pull away, you wanted to stay here in this bliss forever, but the feeling in your wrist like a dull pain that was more an annoyance wasn’t going away. So, you pulled away.
Luke and you locked eyes with matching smiles, both heartbeats beating fast in your chests until you heard either Alex or Reggie gasp, you weren’t sure which. “Y/N.” Reggie said before he was at your side, scaring you with his speed.
“What? What’s wrong?” You asked as he grabbed the wrist that caused your distraction as your eyes doubled. The stamp was slowly rising off you, shining as it grew in the air, and just like when you watched Caleb free the boys, it disintegrated.
You looked up to your brother first, your wrist still in his hand as he slowly smiled and you couldn’t help the laugh of relief that escaped from your smile. Then you looked to Alex, who stood with a dropped jaw and eyes locked on your wrist but you could see his breathing skip as he understood what this meant. Finally, you turned to Luke. His eyes were glued to the side of your face since the stamp was gone. He didn’t know how to feel right now. You’re safe. You’re free. You’re in love with him.
You pulled your wrist from your brother and jumped in Luke’s arms, your legs going around his waist as he spun you around. When your feet hit the ground again, you moved your face in front of his as he smiled. “I love you.” he repeated, wanting you to know he didn’t just say it because he thought he’d never see you again. He said it because he truly meant it.
“I love you too.” You whispered, pushing your hand through his hair. You were leaning in about to kiss him before Alex cleared his throat, causing the three of you to look at him.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to disrupt this beautiful moment you’ve got going on, but maybe this is something you can continue back home? Not in the ghost club that could trap us forever?”
Alex was right and the four of you took each other’s hands and disappeared, seconds before Caleb rushed back in, well aware of the fact that somehow, you’ve lost your stamp.
---
You’ve never been more thankful to be back in Julie’s studio before in your life. Relief was written across everyone’s faces and you leaned into Luke’s side and his arm went around your shoulder as he pressed a kiss onto your temple. With a look up at him and a warm smile on your face, you quickly finished that kiss Alex interrupted before it could start.
You both giggled, cheeks flaring as you’ve come to term that things are going to be different from now on, but a good different, nonetheless. Reggie pulled you away from Luke, getting a hug that wasn’t sad and you reciprocated right away, your brother’s hugs always making you feel at home.
“I’m so glad you’re alright.” He said when you separated and you nodded frantically.
“I’m so glad we’re all alright. I mean, I can’t imagine how awful this night could’ve been if it had gone any other way.” You looked around, seeing the three boys nodding their heads in agreement before you paused. “Where’s Julie?”
None of them knew, but you had a small guess on where’d she’d be. You teleported to her room, standing at the foot of the bed as you looked at the crying younger girl on the bed, her head buried in the pillows and your heart ached for her. “You cryin’ over me, Jules?”
Her head snapped around so fast you were certain she had whiplash. She didn’t acknowledge any pain of the action before she leaped out of the bed and into a hug with you. You laughed out, happy to see the tears had stopped as you hugged her back. “You’re okay!” She cried out and you squeezed her before you tensed.
“Wait, a minute, how can I-“
“Freaky, right?” Julie interrupted you and your eyes widened. “It happened with the boys earlier too, after you had…” She trailed off, her eyes glancing down to your wrist before flickering back up to your eyes.
You smiled at her, bringing a hand up to cup her cheek, and shook your head. “It’s not there. I’m free.”
“No one made a deal this time, right?”
You laughed again and shook your head, unable to keep the smile on your face at bay. “No. No, this time it was something else.” You thought about Luke and your kiss, how it erased the stamp and Julie cocked her head, wanting to know what was going through yours. “I’ll tell you later. Um, first I have to apologize.”
Her face softened and her hand fell on top of yours still pressed against her cheek. “You don’t have to do that, Y/N. You did what you thought was best was the boys. Just like you always do.”
“I shouldn’t have left you like that. I shouldn’t have left any of you like that.”
“Y/N.” Julie cut you off, knowing you were going to spiral in apologies. “Thank you for not leaving me.” You gave her a nod before another hug, basking in the first time you were able to touch and hug your friend. “Now come on,” she pulled back, moving to grab some tissues to wipe her tears as well as yours. “I’m sure the boys are waiting for you in the studio.” Julie stuck her elbow out and you quickly locked it with yours before the two of you skipped quickly out of the house and into the studio. Willie was there again and, in your presence, he smiled and stepped forward.
“Thank you.” He said and it was more than enough for you as you glanced down to his hand interlocked with Alex’s and you couldn’t help but smirk.
“Don’t mention it, Willie.” You told him, giving him a fist bump that Willie happily returned. Luke surprised you as he snuck up behind you, pulling your back against his chest and his arms went around your waist.
You chuckled, turning to look over your shoulder and you kissed him, only to pull away and see a giddy Julie trying to hide her surprise. You had a little to catch her up with.
“Okay! Okay!” You shouted, putting your hands in the air as everyone paid attention to you. “I know tonight has been… less than ideal-“
“That’s one way to put it.” Your brother interrupted you and you lightheartedly glared at him.
“I know tonight has been less than ideal, but I do believe we had a damn good performance at The Orpheum and I, for one, would like to celebrate that.” There were cheers from your friends as you migrated to the seats. Luke, Reggie and you took the couch with you in the middle and leaning back against Luke and your legs resting on your brother’s lap. Luke’s arms were wrapped around you comfortably and as your band celebrated, the two of you snuck kisses, which when you were sometimes caught by your brother, earned you both remarks about him not wanting to see his sister and best friend making out, but Luke and you only responded with more kisses. Willie and Alex were sitting on the floor close enough that when one moved, the other did as well. Julie was perched on the chair next to Luke, right where you could reach out and grab her leg or hand to get her attention, and with the levels of laughs and conversations in the room, it was something you had to do quite a bit.
You all stayed there for hours, even Julie who was the only one who needed sleep. Soon though, she was slumped in the chair and your conversation was taken down in volume to allow her the sleep she needed and deserved.
You didn’t know what awaited you if you ever crossed over, but you could imagine if it brought you peace and happiness then it would feel like this moment with your family. Life, and death, was a leap of faith, but for them, you’d jump a thousand times.

Note
long message ahead because i was possessed by this idea and i cannot wait to vomit it out for you:
replaying DoL has brought this au to mind: whore pc x caleb. just as gross as caleb sometimes on the stumbling home covered in fluids. probably dirt ass poor, too, considering you live off tips and “private room” time. you have a reputation for it, too, though you’re just as notorious for throwing a quick punch.
just the aesthetic of finding caleb out in an alley, freshly thrown out of the back of someone’s car after fucking him, and helping him home against your better judgement. using the edge of your tattered jacket to wipe off some of the cum and blood off his skin. you even end up offering your mostly untouched milkshake to him, in case he needs some energy.
and then, indulgently, further down the line: broke ass roommates! you run the idea by him when you have to fight off one more asshole trying to break into your shitty apartment. might as well share it with someone who won’t judge, right? with your combined forces, you may even be able to afford a place with hot water. you’re not ashamed of inviting caleb in to save water, though it’s less about the sexual stuff and more exfoliating his skin and lathering him up in soap.
sometimes you stumble in at 5 am, all cranky and sore, and caleb’s still up playing games. you crawl into his lap and take a second controller and fail miserably at beating him, but it’s a good time anyway. in fact, you’re so used to touch you do it absentmindedly. but in an affectionate way. greeting him with a hug, resting against him on the couch, fluffing his hair up in the mornings - that sort of stuff. you end up doing his laundry for him (you’re good at getting stains out of clothes) if he takes care of making sure you wake up in time for work. other times he has to hold your hair back while you throw up into a toilet when you had to down a few drinks when a client’s extra disgusting.
with you making sure he has clean clothes and a decent livingspace and more regular shower times, he looks softer. you enjoy giving him manicures and painting his nails to match whatever color you’ve dyed your hair that week. the two of you can’t afford heating, so you end up sharing a bed in the winter, then permanently when you get used to it. you sleep so deep he has to physically push you out of bed to go to work.
at best, you’re friends with benefits. you never turn him down if he wants to fuck. the novelty of doing it of your own free will makes it fun. (the only time you get pissed is if he ever offers to pay). you don’t bring up dating because like … come on. caleb can do better than you.
ANON SUCH A GOOD CONCEPT.......... i did not shut the fuck up for more than a second hope u enjoy
caleb' is, indeed, just about the last person who would judge you. he's just glad to have a place to stay. you've given him food and some affection, so now he's eternally bound to you <3 (/hj). he's not the best at fighting anyone off, but fuck if he isn't ready to try for you! he spends the hours you're away looking for any possible way to save money, mostly sales on essentials like,, food and soap and the like. he's fine with getting naked in front of you, not ashamed at all, but he shudders underneath being cleaned.
caleb who lets you win while you're playing games, only when you're so drunk and annoyed that you would never notice. it seems to cheer you up just a little. he desperately hides how he feels receiving such casual, affectionate touch, moving his face out of view or rambling about some random thing to distract you. but he never pushes you away. who helps you change and wash you when you're too out of it to walk anymore, without trying anything. who patches up any wounds since he's been doing it to himself for ages.
he gets softer. he's less gross about his desires, less likely to hurt himself. because he's feeling a lot better, living with someone and actually taking care of himself. he's still a masochist- but he doesn't use it as a coping mechanism to function anymore. instead, he shows you a picture of the ugliest combination of nail polish colours you've ever seen in your life, and asks if you could do it with a grin. caleb's a bit of a human heater so you end up draped all over each other once you're sharing a bed!! he sets like 2348934 timers to wake himself up in time to get you out of bed. he'll drag you by your arm if he has to, or literally spray water in your face.
honestly, i'd imagine you'd mess around with each other quite a bit. maybe it's even a pleasant experience to be in control during sex, when you're usually in the service of others? in his mind, you're basically dating but you just haven't said it out loud yet.
but this also just made me think of,, caleb also being a sex worker? i feel like he could go down that road anyway, but in dol even more so! exchanging tips on who to avoid since they're too rough or try to leave without paying. sticking outside the rooms or houses to look out for the other. (this is especially important for the kind of audience caleb attracts- he markets himself as being into very violent shit. someone has to make sure he's not getting murdered.) developing some kind of code with hand signs so you can know when something's up. sharing disgusting stories about clients while you're washing their cum off of each other's bodies. just two disadvantaged people looking out for each other.

‘Wake Up’
May have been inspired by WandaVision...
********
Julie rolled out of bed that morning in high spirits. Despite having to wake up early for school, she had a bright smile on her face the moment the alarm rang.
She went for her closet but, as she passed the mirror, was quite confused to find herself already wearing the outfit she was planning to wear.
Strange.
But she still opened the door to her closet, sliding her hangers around to find her jacket while humming some nonsense tune. Every few articles or so she sifts through, Julie would keep coming across a white shirt.
“Sunset Curve?” she read the logo aloud, not sure why that sounded so familiar...
She didn’t think any of it.
Her jacket was right next to this white shirt she didn’t remember owning.
Shrugging it on, she ran downstairs were Carlos was already going on to her dad and her aunt about whatever this week’s obsession was.
“I’m telling you dad, there’s proof!”
Her dad laughed as he cooked breakfast (or more like burnt it...), “Whatever you say, mijo,”
“What is it this time?” Julie groaned, already picking up a banana from the bowl, forgoing whatever mess her dad was making in the kitchen.
Carlos was already by her side, shoving his tablet in her face, “I saw it online! These guys went into this house at like 3AM and caught a ghost on camera! A ghost!”
She didn’t so much glance down on the screen, already dismissing her brother’s words, but before she could open her mouth, a new voice butted in their conversation, coming from the front door.
“Oooh a ghost? Now that’s interesting...”
“Luke!” Julie beamed at the arrival of her boyfriend and their two friends, who had just walked in.
He waltzed over, dumping his backpack onto the couch, and greeted her with a kiss on the cheek, “Mornin’, Jules. Now what’s this I hear about ghosts?”
Reggie pushed past Alex, who was still kicking his shoes off in the foyer, “Oooh. Show me!” he said excited, huddled over Carlos’ tablet, “Woah. That’s creepy!”
“Do not encourage him, Carlos,” Alex finally made it to the table, “Reggie’s convinced aliens are real too.”
“They are real!”
“Just cuz you watch Star Wars-”
“-Not because of Star Wars! Ask NASA-”
“-Wh-okay. I just go and ask NASA-?”
“-Yes. Just go and ask-”
Luke rolled his eyes at his friends’ arguing. He reached over and picked up a piece of overcooked bacon on Carlos’ place. He took a bite.
Julie’s eyebrows furrowed at the sight.
“You can eat?”
Luke raised one of his own, finishing off the bacon, “Yeah. Of course. Why? Am I not supposed to?” he joked.
“Yes,” Julie found herself saying, “You can’t... you’re not...”
She stopped.
She didn’t even know what she was going to say next.
“Julie!”
She looked up, not realizing that she had been staring off into space, “Yes, Alex?”
The blonde wrapped his arm around her shoulder, “Back me up here, would you? And tell this guy” he points to Reggie, who stuck his tongue at them, “that ghosts (and aliens) aren’t real.”
“Um... er...”
Julie... couldn’t answer that. Finding the question, and this conversation, completely absurd.
Luckily she was saved from answering when her two besties rounded the corner, talking animatedly between each other.
She didn’t remember hearing them come in...
“Julie!” Carrie chirped, hugging her from behind, “Love you. Good morning, but we have a situation.”
“What’s up?”
Flynn settled next to her on the table, “We need a band to play at the dance this week. I’m DJ-ing of course. But we need like a killer closer.”
“But I thought Dirty Candy-?”
“We can’t,” Carrie interrupted, and that was all she could explain, “Any chance Julie and the Phantoms could fill in?”
“A school dance?” Luke grimaced, “Not exactly the Strip...”
Julie couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of deja vu when she heard him say that...
“I don’t know,” a woman’s voice carried over, appearing behind Ray, “You gotta start somewhere right? Build a following?”
Julie nodded, “Mom’s right.”
“She always is,” Ray remarked before kissing his wife, making Carlos gag but making Julie feel...
...sad.
There was something so bittersweet about this moment, but Julie couldn’t put her finger on it. Even when she stood up and hugged her mom, something was telling her... to not let go. Not even for a second.
“What’s wrong, Julie?” she asked, realizing that they have yet to break their hug.
Julie blinked away tears that started to form against her better judgement.
She pulled away, straining a smile, “Nothing. Mom.”
Julie took a look around the room, where all her loved ones were watching her with fondness in their eyes. Her gaze lingered on the three teenage boys, her boyfriend Luke among them- her boyfriend of... how many months? Years?
Weird. She couldn’t remember how long they had been together.
She shook her head to rid of that slightly distressing thought. And she took in the room again.
“Nothing’s wrong...” she reiterated aloud, “Actually, everything’s... perfect.”
Her mom beamed at her, rubbing her shoulder, “Glad to hear it. Now I think we should all get some breakfast before we send you kids off to school.”
Suddenly, Julie was back at the table, that had somehow grew in length and had just enough chairs for everyone.
Looking down, she was surprised to find a yummy looking breakfast, completely different from what her father had cooked before...
Julie lifted the forkful of fluffy looking pancakes to her mouth when she heard the doorbell ring.
Everyone froze.
Julie did too.
She turned to Luke, who clenched his jaw staring at the front door. In fact, everyone had stopped what they were doing to stare at the door, acting like the ringing was some sort of... hindrance...
“Um... is anyone gonna get that?” she asked tentatively, put off by everyone’s reactions...
“Why?” Victoria said, voice cold, “Everyone that’s supposed to be here is here.”
“I know but-”
The doorbell rang again. And Julie made the move to get up.
“Hey,” Luke uttered softly, hand holding hers, “Just ignore it. They’ll go away. Let’s finish our food-”
“You can’t eat,” Julie blurted out again, which only upset Luke more.
His grip on her tightened, “Yes... I can.”
The doorbell kept ringing. In short intervals, repeating in an almost desperate pattern.
Her curiosity got the better of her. Julie wrenched her hand away from Luke’s hold and practically ran to the door, much to the loud protests of everyone.
“Don’t!”
“Julie, get back here right now!”
“It could be important!” she shouted back at them, hand on the handle and opening.
A guy with long hair and a hoodie was standing there. His eyes had a frenzied look to them, he kept taking short, ragged breaths- all in all he looked like hell.
Eyes widened and hands already on her shoulders, “Julie! You got to listen to me-”
“Who even-?”
“Don’t fall for it, Julie. We have to-”
The strange boy tried pulling her along, but she stood her ground.
“I don’t- I don’t know you.”
The boy sighed, kept looking wildly around himself, “You- you don’t have to. He’s gonna find-”
“She said she doesn’t know you,” Alex was now by her side, staring down the stranger, “What seems to be the problem here?”
The stranger stumbled backwards, eyes widening, “A-Alex?”
“You know him?” Julie gaped at the stranger.
“Yes- I mean, no.” The guy shook his head furiously, “No! That’s not- That’s not Alex, Julie!”
“What do you mean?”
“He’s not real! This isn’t- this isn’t real. It’s all in your head,”
Julie shook her head, “No. That’s not- this has to be, Willie.”
The guy straightened up.
“Yes. Yes! That’s me!”
How- how did she know his name? But once it spilled out.. it felt right.
It was the only thing that had felt... right. So far.
The guy- Willie, took her by the hand again, and this time Julie wasn’t wary. She sort of wanted to follow him.
“Look, we don’t have much time before he figures out what I escaped-”
“Escape? He-?”
“But we need to get you out of here. We need to-”
“William?”
Willie whirled around and a man stood there. In a dress shirt, holding a cane.
“No.... no,” Willie held his arm out in front of Julie... as if he was trying to protect her, “Caleb. Stop this right now! Let her go, you psycho!”
The man, Caleb, smiled a sickly sweet smile, “Now that isn’t a way to speak to your old man, is it?”
“What-?”
Julie blinked and Willie faced her now, cleaned up and wearing new clothes, clothes more... befitting for the time. He stood next to Caleb, who had an almost death-like grip on the boy’s shoulder.
“Apologies for that, miss,” Caleb greeted, “My son and I just moved in next door.”
Willie wiggled under the Caleb’s hold, “You’re not my-!”
“Anyways, it’s nice to make your acquaintance...?”
“Julie,” she said, eyes on Willie the whole time. He appeared to be afraid.
And somehow Julie knew that she should be afraid too..
She was slowly stepping backwards into the house, “Nice to meet you... But I have to go-”
“Ah yes, get back to breakfast. Hopefully no more...” The glanced down at Willie, “interruptions.”
“Right,” She was already inside, ready to close the door... she didn’t like how Caleb looked at her. She wanted him gone.
“We’ll be making our leave now. Have a lovely morning, Julie,”
With that Caleb was dragging Willie by the scruff of his shirt down her steps, the boy kept bucking trying to escape.
“Julie! Julie!” he kept calling out to her, “You need to get out!”
“Quiet, you!” Caleb hissed.
Julie’s heart beat rapidly, hands shaking the doorknob, “What-? H-how?”
“Wake up!”
Wake up.
Wake up?
“... if it’s all you do...” she sang softly, the words coming out along with the melody that she had been humming earlier.
Both Caleb and Willie stopped.
“No,” the man uttered, “Stop that.” he ordered.
Willie grinned, “Yes. Julie! Snap out of it!”
“Look out, look inside of you...”
Julie turned her head, Alex was no longer next to her, back with everyone in the kitchen, who stared at her in disbelief. Her mom had rose from the table, telling her to stop.
That made Julie’s blood run cold.
Her mom.
She would never... she would never to tell her to stop singing. Especially not with this song. This song that she had written for her before... before she-
Julie gasped in realization. “You’re dead.”
Luke got up, making his way towards her, “Julie, what are you talking about?”
She backed up, “No. You’re dead too!”
This wasn’t real...
None of this was real.
She had to leave.
This wasn’t- this wasn’t what was supposed to happen...
Emboldened by the revelation, she kept singing, “It's not what you lost... It's what you'll gain raising your voice in the rain...”
The house, her house, began fading away, replaced with any inky blackness that gave Julie more relief upon seeing it.
She could hear Caleb shouting at her, and Willie’s encouragement to keep doing what she was doing. “It’s working! It’s working!”
“Wake up your dream and make it true... Look out, look inside of you...”
One by one, her friends, her family started to fade too, getting lost in the darkness..
Her eyes met her mom’s, and she almost stopped.
But no.
Her mom wasn’t there. She was already gone...
Swallowing hard, shutting her eyes, she... kept going... “It's not what you lost... Relight that spark, time to come out of the dark...”
She took a deep breath...
“...Wake up...”
When she opened her eyes, she found herself tied to a chair in some luxurious looking office. Jazz music playing faintly in the background.
Caleb glowered at her from his place behind the desk.
The memories came flooding back to her.
The flowers, Nick-
Poofing.
To the club. She was in the Hollywood Ghost Club.
She had been there for hours.
Julie struggled in her bindings as Caleb stalked over to her menacingly, “Now, now, now. You shouldn’t have done that.”
“Where’s-” she looked around, “Where’s Willie? How did he-?”
“Somehow he had found a way out of his little holding cell and came up here to cause some trouble...” he knelt down in front of her, “I’ll make sure that won’t happen again.”
Julie scowled at him, wanting to slap the smug grin off the ghost’s face, “Again?”
He wagged a finger at her, “You need to be preoccupied, my dear Julie. While I figure out a way to relinquish your hold on those boys.”
“I told you, I don’t even know!”
“Ah, but there is a way to break it. I will find out. And since you’re here” he procured a velvet bag from his back pocket, “the boys would come running in trying to save you.”
The perfect trap...
Julie wanted so badly to tell Caleb off, to tell him that they wouldn’t fall for it.
But they would come barging in to come get her no hesitation. They had risked everything for her before.
And they would do it again.
“Now,” Caleb stuck his hand inside the bag and gathered up some purple dust, “We’ll do this one more time. And don’t fight it,”
Her eyes widened, realizing what was happening. She squirmed some more, but to no use, “No no no-”
“You should be grateful. I could have easily made it... unpleasant,”
“I’ll find a way out!”
“Let’s see how you fare without Willie’s help,”
Then Caleb blew the powder into the face. And her eyes fluttered closed.
“Nighty night...” she heard him say before it all went black.
****
Julie jerked, hunched over her plate of breakfast.
She felt Luke’s hand on her back, “Are you okay, Julie?”
Lifting her head, she saw her loved ones laughing with each other, enjoying the morning. The sunlight dancing behind their heads, and her mom-
She lifted her cup of orange juice in her direction, smiling before taking a sip.
Julie nodded, “Yeah... I’m fine.”
“Something wrong?”
“Uh... no.” she said, ignoring that nagging feeling in the back of her head, “Actually everything’s great.”
Luke smiled at her, “I’m glad. Now, pancakes?”
“Right,” she smiled back at him.
Then she dug into her breakfast, marveling at how good it all tasted.
Yes, it tasted perfect.
Everything was just... perfect.

Carrie Wilson Meets (And Roasts) Caleb Covington
Carrie huffed as she walked out of the kitchen, her decision made. She was going to follow Nick to figure out whatever was going on with him. He had been acting weird for the last week and Carrie was absolutely sick of it. One day, she and Nick were over for good and Nick was planning to ask Julie on a date and the next day, Nick was just strolling up to her locker wearing a sequinned capelet to ask if she was still interested in ending Julie's reign of terror on her and delineating this incredibly detailed and elaborate plan to humiliate Julie so badly that she begs her dad to move to another state and Carrie can happily continue to be the queen of the hallways at school and will never have to worry about Julie again. That was inarguably suspicious to Carrie.
"Dad, I'm going out!" Carrie shouted to her father somewhere on the other side of the house and walked outside without waiting for a reply. Shutting the door behind her, she started her journey to Nick's house just as he was leaving to go... Somewhere. She furrowed her eyebrows as she sneaked behind a bush, sniffing a rose quickly before rushing after him.
She groaned softly as she rubbed her sore foot, shaking her head. Ugh. She really should have worn her favorite Adidas running sneakers for this. She'd been following him for an hour in her two inch heeled loafers (what a mistake) to what looked like some creepy hotel building. She glanced up, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion when she saw... "Julie and Flynn?" She whispered to herself, watching Julie turn her head to speak to air next to her. She frowned at that, turning back to "Nick" to see him walk inside the building, Julie and Flynn following closely. "Carrie Wilson, what on Earth are you getting yourself into?" She asked herself and ran to follow "Nick" and the girls into the hotel before the doors could apparently magically close behind him.
She shook her head as she watched that happen behind her and looked around while Julie and Flynn followed Nick to wherever he was going. She let out a breath as she took in pictures scattered along a wall around a sign that read "THE HOLLYWOOD GHOST CLUB MEMBERS ONLY" in bold golden lettering. "Ghost club?" She questioned quietly, hoping her little slip up had gone unnoticed once she realized she's spoken aloud. She quickly found the group and hid behind a plant, a little ways away from them but close enough to hear what they were saying.
Hearing things like "Caleb Covington", "what do you mean he possessed Nick?", "Luke, if the three of you weren't already dead, I would kill you for coming here and messing with this guy" only served to make Carrie extremely confused. She had no idea what was going on anymore. Why was Julie talking to thin air? Who was Caleb Covington and why did he possess Nick? What the Hell was this place?
She huffed and started to follow Nick, who was currently dressed in a very un-Nick-like tight black button up and trousers to what seemed to be a dressing room, being stopped by hearing a very familiar voice speak to her.
"Are you a new member here?" She turned her head, her jaw dropping slightly.
"Kayla?" She blurted out in shock and confusion at the girl in the purple dress in front of her who looked very much like her best friend, Kayla.
"Um, no. The name is Betsey." The girl smiled, reaching out to shake her hand.
"Carrie?!"
Carrie flinched and turned to see Julie and Flynn gawking at her, four new faces suddenly surrounding Julie. She let out a small shriek at that, blinking as she took a closer look at the boys. Julie's band were with her! But who was that new boy with long hair?
"I see the three of you are back. Come to accept my offer after all?" "Nick" smiled menacingly at the boys, his eyes rolling back.
"What- What are you and Flynn and your band doing here?" She asked, incredibly bewildered and disoriented as "Nick" started to glow blindingly white, and then there was a flash of light and a tall man appeared next to an unconscious Nick lying on the floor.
"Nick!" Julie ran and crouched next to him, looking up to glare at Caleb. "What did you do to him?" She yelled in anger.
"Oh, relax!" Caleb gave dismiss wave of his hand and rolled his eyes. "The boy will be fine in an hour." He told him. "But I'm not interested in him. No, I'm interested..." He raised both hands to point at Julie's bandmates. "In you three."
"Well, too bad! You still can't have us, Covington!" The shortest boy with large, angry eyes shouted, protectively stood in front of the tall blond and the long dark haired boy, who were in front of the one clad in a leather jacket.
"Mmm, are you sure about that?" Caleb scrunched his nose up, clasping his hands together. "Because last time I checked, I very nearly got you working here."
"You mean you very nearly killed my friends!" Julie snapped, Nick's head now gently perched on Julie's knee.
"Wait, what?" Carrie blurted out, blinking as she processed what Julie was accusing this man of.
"Ugh, details." Caleb shook his head, rolling his eyes once again. He was really starting to leave a bad taste in Carrie's mouth.
"Mr. Covington here," Julie huffed, clenching her fists bitterly. "Tried to charm my band into leaving me to join his band and work under him." She pursed her lips, taking a deep breath. "He forcibly put this mark on them, that would jolt them any time they went against him. He was going to have my boys, or he was going to kill them a second time. Poof them out of existence. Gone." She explained slowly.
"You tried to do what to Julie's band?" Carrie snapped and walked toward Caleb, getting in his face.
Caleb frowned, backing away from Carrie as she just continued to stomp toward him.
"How dare you? Do you have even a shred of morals in your hideously gaudily dressed body?" She asked him in disgust, hands on her hips. "Or are you purely stale air?"
"Oop." Flynn watched her with wide eyes, glancing at Julie before returning her gaze to Carrie and Caleb.
"Because I feel like if you have to try as hard as you did to take Julie's boys away from her so that you could have them instead, which as much as I dislike the girl, she did not deserve after the year she's just had," She glared at him, surprising everyone. "and then tried to literally obliterate them from existence as some kind of messed up revenge for refusing you, which neither they nor Julie deserved either," She grimaced at him, tilting her head slightly. "then I feel like I'm allowed to say that maybe, just maybe, you aren't really as-" She lifted her hands to make finger quotes. "'special' and 'talented' as your-" She lifted a hand to tap a finger against his over-gelled hair. "nar-cis-sis-tic lit-tle pea brain has convinced you that you are." She pointed out with a smirk, making Flynn snort into their hand.
"Carrie, I-I don't think antagonizing him-" Alex piped up but was cut off by Carrie lifting a finger and continuing to speak.
"In fact, not only did you need Julie's boys, but you needed an entire band behind you, dancers and aerialists, and a magic show," She counted each group of lackeys and minions Caleb needed behind him on her fingers. "to entertain all of your guests, all of whose souls were forcibly taken by you. I gotta say, that's incredibly off putting, and..." She sniffed, sneering at the man. "I smell a diseased rat. But hey, maybe someday, if you decide you want to really work for it, you can earn the love of your fake fans instead of forcing it out of them magically like some badly dressed creep with beady eyes and too white teeth." She shrugged, and the girls and the phantoms snorted and snickered into their hands, watching her. "I dunno." She turned to Julie and Flynn with a smile, tucking her hair behind her ear. "See you at school, girls!" She waved, the girls quickly waving back at her in silence, and gently hauled Nick up to get him out of this awful place. She began to strut away, stopping when she heard Caleb speak.
"How dare you speak to me like that, you insolent little girl?" He uttered in shock.
"I simply spoke the truth." Carrie shrugged carelessly, bored of him. "Now if you don't mind, I'll be taking my ex boyfriend home to recover from you and Julie, Flynn, and Julie's band, are just leaving."
Julie smiled and nodded, taking Flynn's hand in her left and Luke's hand in her right. "Yes, we are." She looked up, smirking at a glowering Caleb Covington. "Adios, Mr. Covington." She said simply and the group walked away, leaving Caleb alone.
