#like i truly don't care of you hate zutara or not

As someone who does not really vibe with Zutara (mainly because aroace katara is everything to me, and I like some zukka fic), I do not understand why people seem so fucking mad about it? Like, you reblogged one (1) post being slightly negative about Azutara and you got like... 3 hate anons in the span of 15 minutes, and that's just the ones you answered. My respect for you and the ship community at large has just doubled, how do you do it?
Also wanted to send some love your way, because the anons seem rough. I liked the fics of yours I have read, even as someone who doesn't really vibe with romance-centered fiction! You're really good at crafting dialogue, and I love the nuances and subtext in conversations when you write.
First of all, THANK YOU!! I love writing and I love hearing that other people connect with my work. Even if it's not your normal taste, I'm glad that you like it.
Second of all, thank you so much for thinking of me. I'm fine though. I'm mostly amused by that annon. It is hilarious how tight the booty cheeks on some people clench when you call them on their hypocrisy. I didn't even post that in the Azutara tag. That's someone I found posting in the Zutara tag, and I had time for them tonight. Truly, I don't care much what other people ship as long as they keep it cute, keep it classy and keep it over there. But if they do want to stir the pot, they can eat from it, too.

As I grow up and continue loving Avatar the Last Airbender, I also start to engage with it more and more critically... And honestly, I fully belive that the reason that it's not a perfect show, despite when I used to think and want to believe in when I was younger... Is solely because season 3 exists in the state that it does.
What this means is honestly up to personal interpretation, but! Personally I believe that Aang should've killed Ozai, or at least work for NOT doing that. Either erase the chakras subplot that goes nowhere to enhance and actually give importance and weight to the lionturtle... Or resolve it by following up and officially killing Kataang. I firmly believe that Zutara was the only correct resolution to the whole ordeal, but I also would've coped so much easier with a less disastrous and unhealthy Kataang, and with an Aang that actually gets his teased character development. I didn't always hate Aang, and I wish the third season never made me.
I just... Truly feel robbed on all fronts by the third season, and of the things it introduced in the first place! I don't agree that Aang should've spared Ozai, and I don't agree that he should've ended up with Katara, but... Both happened, but they were done so poorly that I feel like even those who do agree with them deserved better.
My first impression of the finale is just forever gonna be how when we were kids watching the show, both me and my little brother were not even close to being the minority in being wholly underwhelmed by Ozai and Aang's battle, and agreed that he should have just killed him, even though we may not have necessarily wanted to see death. Also my brother was and is a fellow Zutara shipper because he's cool like that and I love him, shoutout to my little brother who's not gonna read this! Also, to my dad's partner who is, hi! You're cool too even if you have no idea what I'm talking about! Like... When your core audience is unsatisfied with your story's resolution, that's!!! Not a good sign! We as kids got that they were going for kid friendly messaging, and we did not care for it because it didn't make sense and wasn't fun to watch, and that's!!! A huge failure!

What do you make of the Zuts who claim that Kataang fans are mean to them? Every ship has toxic fans, so I'm not saying it didn't happen, but the worst vitriol generally seems to come from the ZK side of things and KA fans are more frequently defending themselves (and Aang).
They're absolutely right about the Kataang fandom having it's own bad apples. I have seen some of them attacking Zutara fans, unprovoqued, just for liking a popular fanon alternative to their OTP, which is very childish and pathetic.
Here's the thing though. Like you guys know, while I was never into Zutara, also wasn't always into Kataang. During four of my nearly six years of truly being part of the ATLA fandom, I didn't hate either ship, but I didn't really care for them, and I was not shy about saying it.
And not once did I get death/rape threats or "kill yourself" messages from Kataang fans, not even when I was saying stuff like "I don't think their romance would last" or "I think the show would still work if they were just friends" (and that last point I still agree with). Nor was I told I clearly only didn't like Kataang because I had internalized misogyny or was against interacial relationships - like a cartoon couple could have anything to do with real world issues.
Whenever I read a fic that happened to have Kataang as one of the main pairings (like some fics for Maiko, a ship I always liked), the author never went out of their way to make Zuko, or any other character except sometimes Jet, look like an absolute monster just to make Kataang look better, or force a pairing to happen just to "get Zuko out of the way". Same for the metas about the show.
Whenever I saw fanart or fanfics for ships like Toph X Aang or Haru X Katara, I did not see dozens and dozens of "Ew, gross! Kataang 4ever!" or "This is really pretty, too bad is for an awful pairing, it'd be so much better if it was Kataang instead." Not once was I sent a "Even if you don't ship Kataang, this other ship is just objectively awful" ask just minutes after saying "I don't like Kataang, but I do ship Katara with Haru and even Jet"
Not once was did I ever a Kataang fan repeatedly tell me I should stop writting about my OTP and replace it with Kataang, or write both together, after I had already said I didn't like that ship and was not interested in writting anything except my OTP. Not once was any of metas that were COMPLETELY unrelated to Kataang, often not even mentioning either of the two characters, derrailed into being someone's "If you don't support my ship, you make the story worse" post.
More importantly, I could criticize the bad behavior I DID see from some Kataang fans, and be met with support from other Kataang shippers that were also annoyed at it, instead of having them deny it ever happened, or going "But what about what Zutara fans do?" do deflect, or saying "Don't generalize, we're not ALL like that!" even though that was not what I said.
Meanwhile every single one of these things happened when it came to Zutara fans. Repeatedly. To me, to my friends, to friends or my friends, to people I didn't interact with much, to people I didn't like very much. To people that shipped Kataang, Maiko, Jetara, Toko, etc. For God's sake, these people call the showrunners pedophilies just out of spite for not having their OTP become canon.
The Kataang fandom has bad apples, and like any large group, it can sometimes have TONS of bad apples. But a very big portion of that same fandom clearly doesn't approve of it and tries to keep them in check.
The Zutara fandom meanwhile often seems to go out of it's way to have ONLY bad apples, to the point that I constantly get asks from shippers that say they can't engage with the fandom anymore because people "on their side" are a nightmare to deal with. All because they seem to believe they can bully their way into being canon.
The situations are not at all comparable.

Hiii i saw a post you made about a year ago about ships like lunter zutara and robrae
Im dying to watch a show with that kind of enemies to lovers dynamic! (even if they arent cannon lol)
Could you recommend me anything to watch please? 💌
Sure!
1. Inspector gadget 2015 - Penny x Talon. They are enemies-to-lovers and have super similar dynamic to Luz and Hunter's one. If anyone, they are the most similar to them
Tumblr media
2. Bungou stray dogs - Akutagawa x Atsushi
They have similar dynamic of enemies who are feel like the opposites for thw first sign, but then we find out they actually have a lot of things in common. They pretend like they hate each other, but deep down inside they know they can trust each other. Also the way Atsushi helped Akutagawa realize a lot of things and become better
Tumblr media
3. Gravity falls - Dipper x Pacifica
Two completely different teens who hate each other, but have to work together while finding out about each other more. They find out a terrifying truth about the family of one of them and then become friends or at least become more tolerate to each other
Tumblr media
4. Chainsaw man - Power x Denji
Not like really enemies to lovers, but at first they actually hated each other, so. Also their dynamic is kinda similar to Lunter. Two silly besties on the same vibe who truly care about each other
Tumblr media
5. Arcane - Jinx x Ekko
I can't say their dynamic is actually similar and unfortunately they don't have so much time together, but I wanted to add then too basically bc of their past friendship and the way they don't wanna fight, but have to
Tumblr media
6. Death note - Misa x L
I can't say what exactly did I find in this tbh. But their personalities give me smth similar
Tumblr media
7. Hell's paradise - Sagiri x Gabimaru
Actually I haven't watch it yet, so I'm not sure about this one, bur my friend told me they actually are similar, so it's better to add then, than not
Tumblr media
May be it's not what you actually was looking for tho, but I think they have some similarities, after all, it's basically impossible fo find smth that would be the same. May be, if I remember smth else, I will make part 2 tho

Fifteen Years Later...
15 years ago today, ATLA's finale aired. In commemoration, I dredged up my initial reaction to the finale, which I posted in the shipping thread of ye olde AvatarSpirit.net's forum. Consequently it's very shipping-focused and includes a billion portmanteaus. But it's the closest thing I have to a liveblog for ATLA, and I love nostalgia.
A little context, first. I found Avatar through Zutara fanart at the end of 2007 and caught up on all the existing episodes in probably January 2008? Disappointed that Kataang was so obvious, I turned to Sokka ships and decided I liked Tokka best. I lurked in the fandom for a few months, joined the forum shortly before everyone found out that the Boiling Rock was going to get a DVD release on May 6, two months before it actually aired on TV. I spent a lot of downtime debating the merits of Tokka and making predictions about the show based on random commercials and then the finale trailer. On the shipping side of things, my reaction was kinda negative. I was increasingly disappointed leading up to the finale. Don't worry, it gets better.
Brackets indicate present day edits or comments.
[Begin finale reaction]
OH MAN, WHERE TO START? [...] I guess I'll start from the beginning.
Zumo! ♥
Harutara, ahahahaha.
Nylappa! ♥♥♥ (Ahahaha.)
Irko reunion! ;_; Oh man, I cried. xD
Maiko reunion. xD Seriously, Zuko's eyes. Zudorko. ♥
Okay, I guess it's time for Sutokka stuff, right?
Sukka... were practically glued together. Seriously. And I'm sorry, much as I try to be unbiased, I just really didn't like it. D: There were moments. Mere moments, like back before I had a particular bias. I don't truly dislike it, but when it's so constant and final it's hard to ignore.
It made Tokka moments hard to come by. Or in fact, many other character interactions. Sokka was seriously obsessed. @_@
Did anyone else notice the only time we got Tokka moments was when they were separated from Suki? Dx Aside from the Tokka hand-leading seconds previous. I dunno. I suppose I should be thankful that they made a point of including Tokka. But much as I ADORE this scene:
[Image - probably Sokka covering Toph from debris]
*Insert fangirl scream that gets cut off*
...well it didn't really lead to anything else. ;_;
See, I wanted angst! And drama! And depth! And at least someone acknowledging it. ANYONE.
Frankly, I hated the apparent Toph x everyone-ness. [Zuko, The Duke, and...?] I'm fine with those ships. In fact, I ship more than one of them. But when they're all there? That just says Toph is fickle or childish, to me. D:
I would have liked it better if Tokka was never a romantic ship. Or if we were shown Toph was boy-crazy from the beginning -- with Taang, or some random one-shot character. Why did they save it all for the finale?
But I don't think that's necessarily what's happening. (Reminder to self: don't listen to every conclusion the fandom comes to. >.>) In which case, we still have Tokka disappearing as if it never happened, and Toph doesn't care one iota.
Apparently I came in at just the right time to stew in all the Tokkaness, come to all these conclusions, and then have pretty much everything I ever thought about Tokka or Sutokka be completely undermined. :P
I get the sense that M & B were looking over my shoulder at the things I listed that I didn't want to happen with Tokka, and thought it was a recommendation. :P
However, much as I must seem to be ranting, I'm far more apathetic than angry. Some of that fan depression I had after I watched EIP -- I got this sense I lost my favorite characters, because what I thought was there no longer was. D: [Particularly the way Sokka is characterized, since he's my favorite.]
So, oddly enough, the Sutokka plotline was probably the one I was least interested in, except in with glimmers of hope that those characters I loved might come back. (And they did. Some.)
But, oh man, you should have heard my breathing when Toph got in her metal armor. :P Sutokka got some of the best action EVER.
Wait a second. Pretty much EVERY moment in the finale that had action in it was better than everything else in the whole series. Where can I begin?
[I rambled about staying on topic.]
Except... Crazula? Seriously, I can't say enough how astdirl,dtbmortsnehjAMAZING Crazula was. AZULA, where did you GO? ;_;
And the Kazuko [platonic Zutara] was better. :D
Okay, I'm still not done.
Kataang?
Yeah, it's okay. (Best in EIP.) [Eh???]
Remember the Kataang commercial?
"I won't let him fight alone?" :P
I find it highly ironic that Katara was on ANOTHER CONTINENT THE WHOLE TIME.
Heh. Oh, well. I'll just pretend there's a little extra Kataang in there more along the lines of EIP. ^_^ And then I might be able to say I officially like Kataang, or something.
[End finale reaction]
Years later, I'm rather bemused by some of my thoughts. My disappointment in Tokka makes sense, since they would be so awesome. :P During ATLA, I assumed that shipping details were done very purposefully and would lead somewhere, even if it was just a character arc. After watching LOK, I came to understand better how the writers used shipping more for fun, especially with secondary characters. Part of the magic of shipping or just being in a fandom in general is the fans' imagination. I've been (more or less) happy to continue Tokka using my imagination. I can even imagine contradictory scenarios - angsty, happily ever after, silly, serious - so it really doesn't matter what happened in canon after ATLA.
I don't think Toph was boy crazy, but I do think Sokka will forever care about her well-being. Nowadays Sokka, Suki, and Toph's side plot might be my favorite plotline in the last two episodes, but it's really hard to choose. The Agni Kai is beautiful, the Old Masters are powerful, and Aang's battle against Ozai is intense and important.
My original thoughts on Kataang are really weird to me now. I think I finally warmed up to them a couple years later. I'm not sure what I thought was so good about them in EIP - maybe the fact they actually talked a bit about their relationship? But watching Aang kiss her prematurely is so cringy to me now, and like many I would have liked some sort of interaction before they kissed in the final moments. But I can enjoy it now!
I might dredge up more old posts from the days of great debates, or try to find my first impressions of a few more episodes. (I know I've always loved the Boiling Rock.) Let me know if that's of interest!
In other news, Kataang week is next week, and I am plotting to participate for once.
Now... back to drawing!

You know, I don't know which part is more annoying when it comes to ships, if those who defend the canon or those who defend the fanon and then allege queerbating or that they were robbed, the first one are annoying because they don't stop harassing those who enjoy the fanon but the latter tend to lock themselves in a bubble where they believe that it's really the author's fault and that he guides them along a path to repent not give them anything later, examples of this we have zutara, narusaku, etc (within the typical "we were stolen") and within queerbating there are examples but many times that word is so worn out because the fandom's own imagination believes that couples will happen that never even had a chance, some will say that sns is queerbating but for me not because I would never have been hope that the ship became canon and at most one could expect an open ending without ships (which wasn't possible because they still wanted to exploit the story with the new generation), this also happens in the fandom of bnha, black clover, Kimetsu no yaiba (here I don't know who is more desperate if the lgbt or the dudebros with their canon ships without real development), even jjk with itadori and fushiguro. It's like each party creates a version, they believe it's the absolute truth and then they complain when it doesn't turn out as they expect and they criticize the author.
i actually think narusasu is the opposite of queerbaiting. there’s a huge difference between giving meaningless hints to instigate the audience and develop a relationship while not being allowed to give it the real name to it due to homophobia. queerbaiting is a marketing resource, naruto and sasuke’s relationship isn’t used to sell the story… actually a lot of dudebros, which are the main audience of naruto, hate and complain about the gayness. the name itself indicates that it’s used as bait, as a hint… naruto and sasuke’s relationship is the most developed in the series, they don’t have mere moments that are used as shipping bait… you know which pairings have? ss/nh/nrsk, and they are all one sided still. that moment during war in which sasuke doesn’t let sakura fall is a shipping bait, especially when you consider that kishimoto already knew about boruto and yet made no effort to give important moments or develop ss (actually he made sasuke say he had no reasons to love sakura a few chapters later, which is negative development). naruto holding hinata’s hand is a shipping bait, kishimoto said neji died as a cupid, but it’s impressive how the moment is still not romantic from naruto’s side and naruto still ignores hinata until the end of the manga lol, it’s a shipping bait because kishimoto knew he had to pair naruto and hinata together for the sake of boruto. same about naruto telling minato that sakura was his girlfriend during war, but when he’s really talking about important things in their farewell, he changes the subject. can’t even say that sk has shipping baits because no one cares about that pairing lol i don’t even think sasuke saving her could count as shipping bait when it’s so clear that there isn’t anything emotional about it. but all those pairings consist of those moments that make the shippers go crazy, yet they have no meaningful interactions or development. i made this joke a while ago but i wouldn’t say that’s far from the truth lol.
again, those shippers that claim they were robbed just got too instigated by the shipping baits, but there isn’t really good development. would say zk has some development, since they were enemies in the beginning and all, but it’s really not like the shippers claim as well, that zuko truly understands katara and that it would be a better choice because [reads smudged writing] aang is an abuser and just like ozai… (what fr). idk about black clover and i know little about kny but i don’t think the others you’ve mentioned have queerbaiting either, they just have developed male friendships that shippers that have at least one mlm pairing for every media they interact with go crazy over it.

‘Sozin’s Comet, Part 2: The Old Masters’
I love the encounter with June, and how she has dropped the Uncle Lazy for 'creepy uncle' when speaking about Iroh. So those unsolicited advances didn't go unnoticed. Good reason to slap Iroh with 50 extra Jerk Points. And damn that is some heavy Zutara baiting.
I feel like Book 3 commits some of the same crimes as the last few seasons of Game of Thrones. Suddenly, the actual distance between places doesn't matter and travel from Fire Nation to Ba Sing Se barely takes a day. Once again, someone has invented fast travel. And I get that most people won't notice this, but to me it's very jarring and annoying. It gives the feeling of things being rushed.
Okay, unlike the Gaang I am not so happy about encountering this collection of crusty old men with dubious motives. I hate that Pakku is still an asshole to Sokka, and for the sheer gall of approaching Kanna again, Pakku gets 50 more Jerk Points. Also, all these old men are here for something... important? Yeah, the counter siege that was pretty much unnecessary, except to give Iroh bragging rights for having taken Ba Sing Se after all. Iroh is still drinking the kool aid of destiny, only now it has become about taking Ba Sing Se back from the Fire Nation. Convenient how that changed, huh?
I love the little cameos of all the past Avatars (I couldn't help but notice how each and every one made me more interested in them than I was ever interested in Aang) And also just upon this re-watch I realized that I have been channeling Yangchen in all my arguments of what Aang should have done - sacrifice your own spiritual needs for the good of the world. Yes, exactly! That would have actually taught Aang a very important lesson for the future. Also, for talking smack about Kyoshi, Aang gets 30 Jerk Points. She ushered in an era of peace, you judgey little asshat.
I love that it was Katara who came to reassure Zuko in his moment of doubt before speaking with Iroh. Katara extending her compassion to Zuko means that she has truly accepted him as a friend, and it is just a beautiful moment.  As is the reunion between Iroh and Zuko, not going to lie.
I don't care about Iroh's excuses of not fighting Ozai, sorry. History will see it as a brother fighting a brother for power. Yeah, what will history see Zuko fighting Azula for? Also, suddenly Iroh sees that becoming the Fire Lord is Zuko's destiny... I don't know where to begin with this contradictory old man. Although... I'll be honest, Iroh doesn't actually tell Zuko to fight Azula. He just tells Zuko that he needs to be in place when Ozai goes down. (Also how the fuck does Iroh know that Azula didn't go with Ozai and stayed in capital, like news don't travel THAT quickly) Still, for all the convenient destiny bullshit and evasiveness about facing Ozai, I'm going to slap Iroh for 100 more Jerk Points.
And sorry, but Zuko's comment about putting Azula in her place was always going to get him points. I really wish he hadn't phrased it that way, it's... not good. 120 Jerk Points.
Also there was a lion turtle I guess
Book 3 Jerk Points with 2 episodes to go:
Zuko - 840 Ozai - 700 Aang - 690 Yon Rha - 400 Iroh - 150   Sokka - 110 Roku - 100 Hide - 80 King Kuei - 60 Toph, Pakku - 50 Haru - 30

“Katara is Hot-Headed”
.... okay, so i’ve seen this ICE cold take enough time to warrant a formal post. i’ve seen and strongly agree with the posts i’ve seen that refute this, like @shewhotellsstories post here. but unfortunately, this sentiment is still something that’s widely accepted in the atla fandom. it’s no surprise that “katara is hotheaded” is the common argument for “why zutara doesn't work.” and while it’s more than irritating that zutara antis love to align them in ways that are only negative in nature, i’m not going to get into that. i’m going to focus on katara.
one of the key defining aspects of katara’s personality is her patience. she is unwavering in her faith of aang (through their numerous supportive talks), as well as her encouragement of her friends when they need it (ex. toph in the runaway and sokka in sokka’s master.) but most notably? let’s talk about the desert episode because this is where katara’s patience really shines.
there are a lot of things going on in that episode. aang is dealing with grief from the loss of appa and lashes out at both toph and katara while also intermittently flying away from the group. what would a “hot headed” or quick-tempered person do in this situation? let’s look at some of the dialogue:
aang: [Enraged.] How could you let them take Appa?! ‌ Why didn't you stop them‌?!
toph: [Defensively.] I couldn't! The library was sinking! You guys were still inside and-
aang: [Snaps at Toph in a harsh way.] You just didn't care! You never liked Appa! You wanted him gone!
aang looks extremely furious at Toph as Katara walks over to him. She puts her hand on his shoulder to try and calm him down.
katara: We're all concerned, but we can't afford to be fighting now.
in that dialogue, katara inserts herself in to mediate. she recognizes that he’s in a dark place, and she sees past the harshness of his words to see that they come from a place of hurt, not malice. she reacts with empathy and understanding.
a quick-tempered person would not have responded in this way.
the majority of this episode, katara is essentially the leader of the group. it’s swelteringly hot, which is enough for any hot headed person to get irritated, but she doesn’t.
toph: Katara, can I have some more water?
katara: Okay, but we've got to try to conserve it.
sokka: [As he points to his mouth.] We're drinking your bending water. [He tries to define the taste of the water, smacking his lips. Disgustedly he exclaims.] You used this on the swamp guy! Urch!
toph: It does taste swampy.
katara: [Sad tone.] I'm sorry, it's all we have.
in this scene, even momo complains about the taste of the water, the only water they have. and katara’s response was to apologize for something she can’t control.
after this point, she has to lead toph through the sand, while sokka is high on cactus juice and aang is upset. instead of getting frustrated, she tries to inspire hope into them all:
aang: [Hopelessly.] What's the difference? We won't survive without Appa. We all know it.
katara: [Encouraging.] Come on, Aang. We can do this if we work together. Right Toph?
toph: As far as I can feel, we're trapped in a giant bowl of sand pudding. I got nothin'.
katara: [Hopeful.] Sokka? Any ideas how to find Ba Sing Se?
Sokka and Momo lie side by side on their backs, arms and legs stretched out. Sokka smiles blissfully.
she does get annoyed, but she doesn’t direct that frustration at any of them, unlike a quick tempered person would do.
katara: [Grabs her head in annoyance.] Ugh ... We're getting out of this desert, and we're going to do it together! Aang, get up. Everybody, hold hands. We can do this. We have to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the point of these excerpts isn’t to say that anyone else in the gaang is horrible. i just wanted to point out the moments when she could’ve gotten frustrated and lashed out, but didn’t. not once.
patience and quick temperedness are antonyms of each other. and imo, the fact that so much of katara’s character is defined by her patience (even outside of this specific episode) and nurturing (for over 80% of the show)  is enough to refute her “hotheadedness.” especially, when the other members of the gaang are allowed to be upset and/or angry on occasion and their dispositions/temperaments are not immediately associated with hotheadedness. maybe unpack why that is.
let’s take the instance when she and toph argue in the chase. first of all, this episode is characterized by all of the members of the gaang being sleep deprived (i.e. not in their normal states), so their attitudes should be taken with a grain of salt. (what humans do you know that are happy-go-lucky when they haven’t slept enough?)
anyway, the episode starts with katara attempting to lightly hint to toph about  group dynamics.
katara: So Toph, usually when setting up camp, we try to divide up the work.
toph: [Shrugging casually.] Hey, don't worry about me. I'm good to go.
katara: Well, actually what I'm trying to say is, [Holds arms out in gesture.] some of us might fetch water, while someone else might set up the fire pit, or put up the tent. [Momo flies over to her, dropping several berries he had collected into her hands.] Even Momo does his fair share.
toph: [Breezily.] Katara, I'm fine. I can carry my own weight. I don't need a fire, [Pats bag.] I've already collected my own food and look, [Earthbends a rock tent over her.] my tent's all set up.
katara: [Slightly irritated.] Well, that's great for you, but we still need to finish
toph: [Angered.] I don't understand what's the problem here!
katara: Waves her hand dismissively and walks away.] Never mind.
from the above excerpt, she drops the issue and doesn’t lash out. later, she even goes back and tries to make amends with toph. she even tries smiling before she heads over there.
Cuts to Katara, who sets down a jug of water. She looks over at Toph, sitting comfortably beneath her earth tent. Her dull expression changes to one of slight happiness. She approaches Toph who is eating some sort of food item.
katara: [Rubs back of head sheepishly.] Hey Toph, I wanted to apologize for earlier. I think we're all just a little tired and getting on each other's nerves.
toph: [Casually.] Yeah, you do seem pretty tired.
katara: [Growing disgusted.] I meant all of us.
Cuts to shot of inside Toph's earth tent as she lazily tosses the food item onto the ground and lays her head down to rest.
toph: Well, good night.
katara: [Slightly irked.] Good night.
none of her mannerisms and word choices are characteristic of someone with a temper. despite toph’s slight unintentional antagonistic remarks, katara doesn’t react.
later, after they managed to evade the azula’s tank train for the night, they land appa. and katara tries, again:
toph: [Leaping off Appa and lying on the ground, relieved.] Ah, land sweet land! [Rises and says cheerfully.] See you guys in the morning!
katara: Actually, can you help us unload?
toph: [Points a finger at Katara in irritation.] Look! I didn't ask you to help unload my stuff! [Turns and begins walking away.] I'm carrying my own weight.
katara: [Angrily.] That's not the point. [Approaches Toph.] Ever since you joined us, you've been nothing but selfish and unhelpful!
toph: [Enraged.] What? Look here, sugar queen, [Points finger at Katara.] I gave up everything I had so that I could teach Aang earthbending. So don't you talk to me about being selfish!
the only times when katara reacts in anger that could be perceived as impulsive, is when she is insulted by Pakku and when Sokka suggests that she leave the Fire Nation town without helping. Both of these are hardly instances of hotheadedness, and moreso a reflection of who she is as a character: someone who doesn’t turn her back on people who needs her and someone who fights injustice.
why would we call katara hotheaded for not settling for being antagonized by a misogynistic asshole? she was a trailblazer in that scene and it meant so much to the little girls of the Northern Water Tribe. similarly, why would we call her hotheaded for not being able to turn away from people who are in need? after all, that’s a core part of her character’s trauma: feeling of survivor’s guilt that there was something she could’ve done to save her mom. it’s part of why she has to act to help others. her passion isn’t synonymous with hotheadedness.

i still have more proof that taylor swift is a zutara shipper. there is so much and @burst-of-iridescent had some i hadn't even thought about and they were so good??? amazing job i loved that post, but this is like part 3 lol and it was going to end there but 16 songs was too long and so 8 are here and 8 are on the next :)
also shout out to @coneyluke for inspiring all of these!!!
"part 1" | "part 2" | "part 4"
Love Story
"That you were Romeo, you were throwin' pebble/And my daddy said, 'Stay away from Juliet'/And I was cryin' on the staircase/Beggin' you, 'Please don't go'"
this sounds like a no war/war ended early au where ozai is still nasty and probably racist and all that fire nation supremacy garbage but zuko just thinks katara is just the prettiest person ever and can't let it go.
"Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone/I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run/You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess/It's a love story, baby, just say, 'Yes'"
katara does not care what people think and is like "c'mon zuko let's go forget about thlse losers" and he's like "you know that's a good point" and then they... spar idk. it's also got that "i'd drop everything for you" and that's so on brand. i don't think i need to remind anyone here that the lightning exists. also katara pulling a sokka. "you know where i come from im kind of like a princess myself"
"We keep quiet, 'cause we're dead if they knew/So close your eyes/Escape this town for a little while"
ozai is not happy and zuko is afraid but don't worry katara is a master waterbender. they would just sit and daydream tho i think.
"'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter "
i see your "scarlet letter is katara" and raise you "zuko is the scarlet letter bc fire" or whatever, but maybe they can both be the letter im fine with that
"Romeo, save me, they're tryna tell me how to feel/This love is difficult, but it's real/Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess"
i can totally see zuko freaking out about all of the drama that comes with stupid ppl not realizing how iconic katara is bc that is also very zutara of taylor. and also no one can truly tear zutara apart and they do always make it out the messes <3
You Belong With Me
"You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset/She's going off about something that you said/'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do"
i mean no hate to m/ai buuuuut... she is upset a lot and that does fit. katara and mai handle zuko very differently, but m/ai's anger/upset-ness seems to mostly come out when she and zuko are having a spat. m/ai and zuko also dont get each other in general-- not just the humor thing. it reminds me of when sneezy reviews put this section in her zutara video with a lot of fancy words that basically boil down to "she doesn't get your need to free the world from your father like i do" so like... yessss zutara understanding each other that's like a good chunk of the appeal (for me at least).
"And she'll never know your story like I do"
same kind of concept as before, but scar. catacombs and scar touching/understanding scar absolute classic zutara.
"If you could see that I'm the one/Who understands you/Been here all along/So, why can't you see?/You belong with me"
i mean... just sayin'. zuko can be a bit of an oblivious airhead sometimes (we love that about him tho).
"And you've got a smile/That can light up this whole town/I haven't seen it in a while/Since she brought you down/You say you're fine, I know you better than that/Hey, what you doing with a girl like that?"
again, m/ai and zuko don't get each other and katara is not having it bc she does get zuko and she is very conveniently in love with him if he would just use his brain and notice.
"Oh, I remember you driving to my house/In the middle of the night/I'm the one who makes you laugh/When you know you're 'bout to cry/And I know your favorite songs/And you tell me 'bout your dreams/Think I know where you belong/Think I know it's with me"
again we got our girl katara saying "buddy i understand you and can give you mutual care you deserve bc you're wonderful" and also the night driving gives nightmare comfort and oh no they accidentally fell asleep together and that's very good zutara energy and coincidentally one of my favorite tropes.
Come Back... Be Here
"You said it in a simple way/4:00 a.m. the second day/How strange that I don't know you at all/Stumbled through the long goodbye/One last kiss, then catch your flight/Right when I was just about to fall"
this has post-war teenage zutara. they've just kind of had their "i might like you" moment and they're saying their goodbyes and we get another southern raiders like hug and katara is off to rebuild her home with her family and they're teetering on the edge of something, but split.
"I told myself, don't get attached/But in my mind, I play it back/Spinning faster than the plane that took you"
and like once the adrenaline of being home and the war being over and everything wears off, they're just thinking about each other...
"And this is when the feeling sinks in/I don't wanna miss you like this"
...and then they have that "oh no i might be in love with them"
"I don't wanna need you this way/Come back, be here"
zuko is just wishing he'd asked katara to stay or come back or just something. he thinks about her all the time and he knows that katara would be able to help him with all of the chaos and finding his mom and he just suddenly is in desperate need of her and is fighting that need with all he's got.
katara is working hard in the south pole and she's kind of stuck doing what she was before, and she has a while to spend thinking and (ofc) she's thinking about zuko and how they would do chores on ember island together. they shared the burden and she wonders how he's doing bc she's feeling overloaded and somehow underwhelmed at the same time and needs zuko's help.
"Taxi cabs and busy streets/That never bring you back to me/I can't help but wish you took me with you"
trade is increasing between the nations and zuko always races down to the docks at top speed when he spots the water tribe ships, but it's never what he hoped for and he knows it's stupid to keep doing, but he just does it. katara sees the ships return and leave and considers hopping on one every day. she's wishing she'd stayed with zuko.
"This is falling in love in the cruelest way/This is falling for you and you are worlds away/In New York, be here/But you're in London, and I break down/'Cause it's not fair that you're not around"
i mean... kinda makes sense if you've read the whole thing but they're just slowly appreciating the other more and more and falling in love and suffering bc they're not together, but one katara decides she's had enough and low-key hijacks a ship, bends it there at top speed. zuko watches it pull in at a really strange hour and does his whole dashing to the docks routine, and katara is there!!! and they hug and stuff but then she passes out bc she was doing some pretty intense waterbending. and then it's happily ever after bc i say so <3
Enchanted
"Your eyes whispered, 'Have we met?'/'Cross the room your silhouette/Starts to make its way to me/The playful conversation starts/Counter all your quick remarks/Like passing notes in secrecy"
did someone say... oma and shu reincarnation au??? if they didn't, i did bc look they just click they get each other. zutara understanding is immediate but like... then zuko makes a bad choice but like it is crazy how quickly they identify what's making the other upset and respond appropriately. very reincarnation of them.
"This is me praying that/This was the very first page/Not where the story line ends/My thoughts will echo your name, until I see you again/These are the words I held back, as I was leaving too soon/I was enchanted to meet you/Please don't be in love with someone else/Please don't have somebody waiting on you"
this feels like the betrayal part of the au where they're having a crisis bc zuko made dumb choice and he's like "i wanna go back this is not what i wanted" and katara is just like "i wanna see you again but also i hate you how dare you this is so complicated don't date knife girl" or something like that.
Out of the Woods
"Looking at it now/Last December/(Last December)/We were built to fall apart/Then fall back together"
catacombs to the southern raiders??? post war zutara?!?! either one is good with me.
"Ooh, your necklace hanging from my neck/The night we couldn't quite forget/When we decided, we decided/To move the furniture so we could dance/Baby, like we stood a chance/Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying"
zutara + necklace = important!!! zuko holding onto katara's energy kinda thing and this might be a little dumb but like the furniture reminds me of their differences and setting them aside to be together.
"Remember when we couldn't take the heat?/I walked out, I said "I'm setting you free"/But the monsters turned out to be just trees/When the sun came up you were looking at me"
the heat you say? i do know a firebender in this relationship... but "setting katara free" feels very on brand zutara to me bc he doesn't want her to get all mixed up in the fire nation drama but katara is not having it and beats everyone up or something and then she's looking at him and then it's all good! (probably)
Begin Again
"He didn't like it when I wore high heels/But I do"
kata*ng right after the war. aang is still short and gets a little fussy when katara wore heels to be taller.
"Turn the lock and put my headphones on/He always said he didn't get this song/But I do, I do"
a*ng just not getting katara. he doesn't get her songs like he doesn't understand her.
"Walked in expecting you'd be late/But you got here early and you stand and wave"
a*ng was always late but now our boy zuko is here!!! and zuko feels like a punctual guy to me personally, so if you wanna avoid this part, valid.
"You pull my chair out and help me in/And you don't know how nice that is/But I do"
reminds me of zuko just casually doing stuff around camp to help and not thinking about it but katara can't stop thinking about it. A*ang isn't bad, he just doesn't think to pull the chair out to ease katara's burdens.
"I've been spending the last eight months/Thinking all love ever does/Is break and burn, and end/But on a Wednesday in a cafe/I watched it begin again"
kata*ng ends. katara thinks that she blew it with the avatar and she's stupid for dumping him but she knew she had to do it (like the back of her hand you might say). she thinks it's over and she can't do better, but she and zuko fall in love and suddenly she can see everything clearing up.
"And we walked down the block, to my car/And I almost brought him up/But you start to talk about the movies/That your family watches every single Christmas/And I want to talk about that/And for the first time/What's past is past"
katara almost talks about a*ng the ex but zuko is telling her about his mother and his old traditions with her, like the turtleneck pond and katara doesn't even want to talk about the avatar ex situation anymore bc she and zuko have missing moms to bond over.
Run
"And my so-called friends, they don't know/I'd drive away before I let you go"
zutara is pretty much canonically the ride or die type of relationship and i really don't think the gaang truly knows how ride or die they are.
"There's a chain 'round your throat, piece of paper where I wrote/'I'll wait for you'"
zuko was chillin in the fire nation until katara returns and he sent her a little notes while she was gone about how he missed her but was sure it would be worth the wait. katara is shook and her cheeks turn pink.
"And run, like you'd run from the law/Darling, let's run/Run from it all/We can go where our eyes can take us/Go where no one else is, run"
zutara knows all about running from the law lol. they are professionals they can get in anywhere like the sneaky little criminals they are. but again, this has their ride or die energy. they don't care what anyone else says because they love each other and that's what matters.
"I could see this view a hundred times/Pale blue sky reflected in your eyes"
blue eyes. that's it.
"There's a heart on your sleeve/I'll take it when I leave/And hold it for you"
they're not subtle. we all saw the lightning. their hearts are definitely on their sleeves if not the entire shirt.
"There's been this hole in my heart/This thing was a shot in the dark/Say you'll never let 'em tear us apart/And I'll hold onto you while we run"
zuko's always had a hole in his heart and the gaang helps to fix it-- especially katara. zuko is loved and the hole is gone <3. and again, zutara is all about staying together despite it all.
Long Live
"We were the kings and the queens/And they read off our names/The night you danced like you knew/Our lives would never be the same"
end of the war when zuko is the fire lord and you know what katara 100% counts as the one who beat azula. i can see zuko and katara dancing after the war at a like celebration before she goes home and talking about how different everything is now.
"You held your head like a hero/On a history book page/It was the end of a decade/But the start of an age"
i don't really know what to even say just look at zuko at his coronation. he is ending the war and starting a new age. that's not strictly zutara but idc. zuko is very important lol.
"Long live the walls we crashed through/How the kingdom lights shined just for me and you/I was screaming long live all the magic we made/And bring on all the pretenders/One day, we will be remembered"
zutara winning the war and then fire nation party for besting azula and they're just generally celebrating. they've won and will go down in history.
"And the cynics were outraged/Screaming, 'This is absurd!' 'Cause for a moment a band of thieves/In ripped-up jeans got to rule the world"
this has the energy of people arguing about who is supposed go rule the fire nation and some are just aghast at the concept of fire lord katara.
"Long live all the mountains we moved/I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you/I was screaming long live that look on your face"
again the gaang ended a war that is a mountain moved. and also azula counts as a dragon i have decided and it is the truth now you can't take it back.
"Will you take a moment/Promise me this/That you'll stand by me forever"
zutara!!! forever!!! like we deserved.
"But if God forbid fate should step in/And force us into a goodbye/If you have children some day/When they point to the pictures/Please tell them my name"
this could be so tragic with the canon implications where they get split after the lightning/healing and put with their other partners and rarely see/interact with each other. just telling them about the other and-- it's killing me.
"Tell them how the crowds went wild/Tell them how I hope they shine"
they both would wish each other's children goodwill if they were forced apart. imagine them telling their children about the agni kai and trying not to get lost in that moment and those feelings bc even when they've greyed they're still just as strong and know they'd do it again if they had to.

It is baffling to me how Kataang shippers interpret that couple. How can you be a fan of Katara in specific and see how little agency she got in that relationship yet still be satisfied with how that whole mess turned out. Katara never gets to express her feelings.
Let that sink in. Katara, who challenged a waterbending master with decades of experience on her, who started a prison riot and freed captive earthbenders, who went out of her way to help a village of Fire Nation citizens. Who made a flower hat for a really cute guy she was into. THAT girl didn't get to express her own feelings for Aang. After their last two disastrous encounters- one in which he violated her consent after she tried to let him down easy said she was confused. After he had opened a lava fissure in her face because she didn't want to talk about his feelings for her. She didn't even get to speak. Her final line between the Agni Kai and that final scene was about Sokka's drawing.
She doesn't get to talk to Aang about how his treatment of her upset her. She doesn't get to express what changed between EIP and the finale. She doesn't get to confront Aang on his habit of running away when things get tough. She doesn't even get to hear what Aang likes about her (I mean, we the audience know that he thinks she's pretty, but beyond that?). The way the finale sets up Kataang it makes it seem like Katara is only into Aang now because he's Th3 r3@L H3r0!!!! (lies, but that's another rant). It makes her look either like she feels obligated or she's incredibly shallow (which, we know she isn't). But somehow this feels like a satisfying culminating moment for Kataang shippers???
And let me be clear, I don't care. I don't care if you are reading this now and you like both Kataang and Aang. I don't care if you truly do think their story is the height of romance. I am not here to debate you on the story merits of Kataang vs Zutara or change your mind on anything. You can like or hate whatever you want in good health as far as I'm concerned. Just know that if you try to argue with me, this is my opinion; Aang is fetid trash. Kataang is somehow both the most boring and the most toxic relationship in the show (yeah, I'm including Maiko). All trying to argue with me will accomplish is to stir up more examples in my mind about why Kataang is a terrible ship and Aang is an awful character/friend/SO/father, so jump into my inbox if you want that. But wouldn't you rather go talk to your fellow shipper fans about it?

I'm not really a zutara shipper, and was fine with kataang, and in fact I really didn't care for shipping at all in atla, but I have to say this:
Don't defend kataang by slandering zuko's character and calling him an abusive imperialist.
His redeemption arc was literally the best written redemption arc this world has ever seen and watching him go from an angry and brainwashed teenager and a slave to his father's wishes, to a thoughtful and compassionate young man determined to fix the mistakes of his nation and rule using all that he had learned from his travels and his experiences with his diverse group of friends?
It was truly enlightening, almost religious, to experience, and i'm a little pissed that shippers would shit on that JUST to rag on a ship they don't like.
Just say zuko and katara weren't compatible.
Don't say Uh ExCusE mE ZuKo iS abUsIve.
Even at his worse, he was not. They were literal enemies. He didn't go out of his way to torture her or something, and when he joined their side, he actually did the opposite and did his best to show he could be a good friend.
That argument doesn't stand in court.
And I don't care how much you love kataang, you shouldn't have to hate on a kid who had the nerve to openly betray his father and walk away from the life he always thought he wanted to save the world, and do the right thing, just to prove it.
In fact I think if you badmouthed Zuko, Aang himself would personally sit you down and have a serious spiritual discussion about why you need to forgive people and treat them with decency, so the irony is not lost on me that you would defend kataang by insisting Zuko is terrible.

Could you please relax? We get it, you and many other people hate kataang, but don't you think it gets excessive? Can't we just all accept that we have different shipping preferences and move on? It's been nearly 10 years since the finale, so there's no reason in prolonging this. It just puts a damper on everybody's fun. I'm pretty sure it doesn't make you happy to talk about something you hate. You're entitled to your opinions but there's no reason to keep going on about it after so long.
Pfffft, sweetheart, come on, I’m super chill.
Anyhow, you know what’s excessive?
Being a creator of a show and then taking art your fans, mostly children, sent you and turning it into a video mocking said fans, who were, again, mostly children.
Like, there is nothing, nothing at all, ever that any anti-Kataang person could ever do what could ever match the sheer vileness and disgustingness and just plain wrongness that the captains of your ship did.
I could spend the rest of my life calling Kataang shippers out on how shallow their interpretation of the text is and how little you actually care about these characters, but in the end I’m just some blog on the internet, you can just block me.
Mike and Bryan are the creators of AtLA and the reason I’m not nearly as upset about any of this as people seem to think I am is because, ultimately, I have the satisfaction of knowing that my ship was never liked by actual garbage like them.
They’re your captains, so idk, try not to choke on the smell and enjoy your stay on their garbage boat, I guess?
Also, good on you for sticking around for over ten years but I literally just got here.
Besides, I’m not talking about something I hate. I love Aang, he’s my favourite character, and I love Katara and I love AtLA and I love Katara and Aang’s relationship so of course I’m going to be writing about how it’s bullshit the way they destroyed it so that they could have their twelve-year-old self-insert make out with the hot babysitter.
Look, Zutara’s beautiful, but ultimately it’s simple: they compliment one-another, lift each other up, and push each other forward. Aang and Katara though… hoooh boy.
Like, the western religious symbolism (Katara as Virgin Mary Aang as Jesus), the eastern philosophy (Attachment as the ultimate obstacle to enlightenment), the way they dance around each other and idealize one another…this is all some premium psychological drama right there.
Add to that the way they actually, truly love one another and how that love was poised as a single step away from both divine and selfless, hence thePietà, and you get the single uniquest, most interesting dynamic between two characters that I’ve ever seen.
And then they ruin it. They make it petty and jealous and possessive and lustful (which, double-triple-extra ew.) and just all around shrink it until it can fit around actual Nice Guys™ Mike and Bryan and I will continue to be upset about this until I stop and if you have a problem with it, it’s entirely yours, don’t come to my inbox with it.
Also, “Can’t we just all accept that we have different shipping preferences and move on?” Sweetie, sweetie, it’s all properly tagged. Always. And that is accepting differentshipping preferences.

Can I say that as someone whose original ship started off as Zutara but is a multishipper, I really, really hate how much their fandom has watered down the pairing. The ship has come to revolve so much on the obsession of not being canon that almost all content is framed as “how can we be “better” than canon?” Oh, Aang did this in the show or the comics or in LOK? Well, my OC Zuko would NEVER.
Zuko, Katara, and Aang exist as nothing else but to be their OCs and projections. Aang is the evil jealous boyfriend who holds Katara back and comes in between Zutara’s “true love.” Zuko and Katara are doormats who have no spine, except when it comes to Aang and Mai. Then they’ll “stand up” to their abusive exes.
Kataang content revolves so little around Zuko that I get whiplash when I see how much Zutara content revolves around Aang and Kataang. It’s all one-sided, delusional beef against Bryke anyway bc Bryke does not give a fuck about them and will make Kataang content because they are the only confirmed canon endgame ship and the main ship of the series, not to spite Zutara shippers. The whole shipping war continues to give them publicity and promotes the show, why else would they attempt to replicate it in Legend of Korra? I suspect that after seeing how popular Zukka has become post 2020, they’ll attempt to do the same for that ship too. All these posts about how “my Zutara fanfic is a fuck you to Bryke and their self-insert” is so funny because these grown ass men do not care and are only benefiting from your fan content that you so believe keeps them awake at night tossing and turning.
And you would think, after all the posts about how shitty LOK and the comics have treated Katara over the last decade, Bryke is FINALLY listening and giving her the post-canon development that she should have gotten ages ago, would be considered a positive sign for them. But instead they’re dreading all content that comes from Avatar Studios painting Katara in a positive and more independent light. Like what! Do you know how many fandoms I’ve been in which I would kill if the showrunners retconned awful post-canon characterizations about my fave characters, despite years and years of begging?
I'm dreading the new content too, but only because I haven't truly liked anything since the original show so I just don't want more disappointment.
"Don't do the thing we've been asking you guys to do all the time 'cause then we lose one of our main bullshit arguments to why Zutara is better than Kataang" is just the kind of stuff that shows all the "We totally care about Katara as her own separate character and not just an OC we can use to pretend we're dating Zuko" has always been and always will be bullshit.

I'm sorry that you get so much hate from antis-zutaras, but the way you handle it is hilarious! How do you deal with it so gracefully? Icouldn't handle being harrassed like that
I'm glad I got a few chuckles! Honestly, the hate doesn't come in that often, and aside from one or two truly unhinged people, most of what I get is people who are too scared to actually come to me for a debate or whatever (I don't know why...I've said before I'm not here to debate my fandom opinions. It's not like I'm going to bite them or anything, I'm just not going to engage...most of the time). Or they're people who want their opinions validated in public, but don't know how to word their own posts (I'm guessing).
As to how I handle it so gracefully...well, I don't, really. I'm not graceful, I'm snarky. Petty, even. But what really helps is I don't really care what any of those people have to say. If they really, truly hate Zutara or my takes on Kataang, Maiko or any of the characters involved, they have the option of blocking me. That they feel the need for my attention is...cute. I like to think that my very unserious responses put a few bees in their bonnets, but really, it's just kind of funny that they think that at this point it's possible to bully me out of my opinions.
