Memoir
My Story From Childhood to Adulthood
Hello, everyone, every two, every three! Good morning, afternoon, and evening to you all. This is your beautiful girl, Berlyn U. Armas. Sometimes, I hear people talk about my surname because it's ARMAS, which means gun or weapon. They find it unique, which is true; I haven't even met someone with the same surname as mine in my entire 18 years of living; even at school, I don't have a similar surname with anyone. Well, yes, I am 18 years old. I was born on January 23rd, 2006. I was born at Mactan Hospital in Lapu-Lapu City. My favorite colors are red and black. I know black is a shade, not a color; you don't have to nag at me. ☹️ but yes, I love black and red—not bright red, but dark red. I lived in Camella Home, Bankal Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines.

This is my memoir from childhood to adulthood. I am not even sure if I am now grown up because he once told me I am still his baby. I don't even have a boyfriend or an ex-boyfriend. I am NBSB, which means NO BOYFRIEND SINCE BIRTH. Do you know why? in view of the fact that I am scared of commitment and that my parents will not allow me to be in a relationship. But I have been in a lot of situations. I remember when I was in 8th grade, I entertained that one boy in our school because he kept messaging me, and one time my brother suddenly saw my phone and saw our conversation. My brother told my parents about it, and they scolded me for being a rock head. But right now, I am ready to commit to the right person. I am still waiting for the right person. I don't know why they don't want to talk to me or approach me; I don't even bite. I guess they don't want the right person, then. Well, it's their loss, not mine. And one thing I am very picky about when it comes to boys is that I always make sure they are willing to take the risk of whatever happens. I am a good person, and I have a kind heart. I treat everyone with a good personality 🤡. This is not a cap, I swear😌.

When I was a kid, I was always full of curiosity and energy. I loved exploring the outdoors, climbing trees, and getting lost in my own imaginary worlds. I remember playing with my childhood friends back then. We would play every four hours in the afternoon until our parents would come to our playground to pick us up just to go home. I also remembered when I accidentally punched my brother when we were little. I have no idea why I did that to him, but he cried after I punched him. When I was in 2nd grade, there was gymnastics training in our school gym, and as I watched it every day, I became more interested in entering gymnastics. I told my mother about it, and she supported me and let me join the sport of gymnastics. As I train every day, my coach sees my potential and says I can join any competition because of the improvement of my skills. As time went by, I became more interested in entering every competition. Sometimes I will receive awards, sometimes not; it depends.

In the seventh grade, I discovered that I have a passion for dancing. By the time I reached the eighth grade, I eagerly joined a dance troupe within our school, taking center stage at every event and earning recognition from everyone on campus. The connections I forged during these experiences led to a lot of friends that enriched my school life. However, as I reached the ninth, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought about unforeseen challenges. Because of COVID-19, the government has decided that all students will take online classes and modular classes during this time because of the virus, so the students will not get infected and to secure their health. At the time I graduated from high school, I graduated with honors, and I am so proud of myself, even if I faced challenges during my 10th grade, together with family problems and financial problems. Even so, I didn't let that affect my academic success. My parents are very proud of me. Despite these shifts, my determination to pursue both academic excellence and my love for dancing remained undeterred.

As I entered senior high school, the government allowed the schools to have face-to-face classes again. I decided to choose the ABM strand. I don't know why I chose that strand; I just did. During this time, I met new friends and also joined the dance troupe at our school. Yes, I passed the audition that time. If our school held an event, we also had to practice for the intermission number. I also joined the SSG organization in our strand to lead and guide the students. I still strive for academic success and have started to join school activities to represent our section and the ABM department. As I grew older, I noticed that I became more competitive whenever we had a dance competition at our school. I feel disappointed in myself whenever we can't achieve that championship because I always think that maybe I didn't do better, or maybe I should have done it better.

Growing up was an incredible journey filled with unforgettable moments. Each day brought new discoveries and opportunities for growth. Whether it was trying new hobbies, making mistakes, or facing challenges, I embraced it all with a sense of wonder and excitement. Growing up taught me valuable lessons about resilience, empathy, and the importance of staying true to myself. Looking back, I cherish those memories and the person they shaped me into today. I will also thank my parents for supporting and taking care of me. Lastly, I also thank God, who always guides me and gives me never-ending blessings.

Could you guys share a few random facts about each of the LIs? Like their favorite things/songs/colors/memories/foods/places, anything like that. Thank you for this project, it is amazing! Super excited for the second half.
We have a couple of music asks floating around, and we answered the food question here, so we’ll do the rest!
Abel:
Thing - the handmade storybook his grandmother made him with all the stories she and his parents used to tell him when he was a kid
Color - probably yellow
Memory - his favorite memory is probably his first Christmas after his parents died. He was totally freaked out, terrified that his siblings were just going to hate it, but it ended up being a really nice day. Everyone was happy, nobody complained, they all had a really nice time together.
Place - His favorite place is the museum. Any museum, really, but specifically a natural history/history/cultural museum, not so much an art museum (though he’s not opposed to one)
Amalia:
Thing - A friendship bracelet that MC made for her in elementary school. Nearly lost it a couple times, but it's still here! She keeps it in the pocket of her jacket as a good luck charm.
Color - Amalia's favorite colors are probably burgundy and moss green
Memory - Among her favorite memories is the first time she visited her extended family in the Dominican Republic as a kid. Meeting and playing with her cousins, cooking traditional dishes with her aunts, watching her grandma sing and falling in love with the art of Bachata, reconnecting with her roots... she will never forget the experience
Place - The largest of her college's lecture halls –in which she feels motivated and full of purpose– and the Kung Fu Club she's spent so many years attending classes at that it now feels like a second home
Lincoln:
Thing - a beautiful collection of art pens that his mom gave to him when he started showing an interest. He doesn't use them anymore, though, just keeps them.
Color - Lincoln hasn't met a color he doesn't appreciate. Every color has a different meaning and resonates in different ways. He can't pick a favorite.
Memories - Christmases with his extended family in the Philippines. He and his mom would go every year together and he'd miss about a week of school so he could stay for the entire month. It was always a special time for him, as it was the only time really that he had to connect with his Filipino family and heritage - plus, it was a month away from his dad. His favorite parts were seeing all the Christmas lights and decorations, playing pranks on his younger cousins with the older cousins, and the noche buena feast.
Place - anywhere that he feels like he can relax and be himself without feeling stress of expectations. He particularly loves the tattoo shop where he works and his bedroom. Safe places.
Jocelyn
Memory - her favorite memory is from when she was just starting to get close to Brittany and Cody. They all rode around in Cody’s car one night and talked about anything and everything. The next day Jocelyn woke up and saw Cody and Brit waiting out front for her to drive her to school. That was the moment Joss knew that she was a part of their group. She looks back on that memory fondly because of how normal her life was. She had her two best friends, and nothing could change that.
Color - red. It’s bright and vibrant and red things go fast, so naturally she likes red a lot.
Place - the outdoor track at her middle school. She won her first event there and that was when she really began to love running. Being an assistant coach for the cross country team there gives her a lot of nostalgia.
Thing - a hoodie that Cody gave her after the two of them decided to impulsively go skinny dipping in the lake in the middle of fall. She forgot to give it back to him and after he died she started wearing it all the time. Now it sits in a memory box in her closet that she pulls out from time to time.

Survivor Season Rankings
Worth Playing For 1) 28: Cagayan Such an explosive cast! Consistent throughout with great pre-merge and post-merge. While the winner may have been overpowered with idols there was still some strategy/manipulation to be done to end up in Final Tribal, I respect the gameplay. Lots of memorable, historical players & moments, my personal favourite season
2) 37: David’s vs Goliath’s The best season to introduce someone to Survivor with! It has a great, diverse cast with many legendary players & moments. Almost every modern advantage pays out in a big way. The theme works fairly well, overall it’s very fun 3) 16: Micronesia Fans vs Favorites Some of, if not the biggest moments in Survivor history! Erik & the idol, the little “Ozzlets”, the f’ing stick!! A slower pre-merge with a bit of a lackluster Fans cast, but the Favorites more than make up for it post-merge.  4) 18: Tocantins One of my favourite original casts in one of my favourite locations! The Brazilian desert is beautiful and makes for a unique landscape. We see the origin of characters like Coach & Tyson, and also one of my favourite duos of all-time in Stephen & JT. Plus the birth of simmotion! 5) 15: China Another great season for the same reasons as above. Amazing casting with Courtney, James, Todd, Amanda, Peih-Gee, etc. and some breathtaking landscapes & temples. Great winner, the big moment with the double idol boot.... DAMN!! 6) 7: Pearl Islands The best original era season in my opinion. The theme is very strong throughout the season, very much paying off in the first episode with the unique  “marooning” and Rupert pretty much being a pirate. A great cast, some fun twists, and a moment that the Smithsonian used to encapsulate all of reality TV!
7) 20: Heroes vs Villains The ultimate battle of good vs evil, what more needs to be said? A massive returning cast with some of the fiercest competition, it gave us our first two time winner. I do find I prefer most players on their other seasons however, letting this one slip a bit lower in the rankings, but overall still a top tier season 8) 33: Millennials vs Gen X  Our first season on the current Fijian beaches, and it never feels fresher! A great cast with a good theme, containing strong emotional moments throughout. The “Did you do that!?” - “Yeah. I did it” moment may be my favourite vote out reaction of all time.
————
My Life Is Fine 9) 32: Kaoh Rong At the time of the live airing I remember this season leaving a dirty taste in my mouth with the sour bullies in Jason & Scott, as well as the “robbed goddess Aubry”, but in revisiting this season I found a lot more peaks than valleys. I came to gain a better appreciation for the winner as well, and it may have the most bonkers reunion special. Drew Carey, Mark the Chicken... Sia?! 10) 6: Amazon While the theme of men vs women may have played a bit hornier at the time, I still think it made for some interesting commentary and moments on the show. The location feels more intense, even when the tribe isn’t burning themselves to the ground haha. Also the birth of one of my favourite characters in Rob C! 11) 10: Palau Some may say the boot order on this season is very lackluster, but it does bring us the only time a single tribe is whittled down to one player. I also find there are entertaining moments throughout both the pre & post-merge. The theme works surprisingly well with sharks & army, it gives us a rootable winner, and a record breaking challenge! 12) 25: Philippines  While we do need to ignore the *redacted* of it all, we get another great mostly original cast with a very unique, historical, and rootable winner. We also get one of the best “love-to-hate/hate-to-love” villains in Abi-Maria, who thankfully cracked a coconut into *redacted*’s head! 13) 42 I haven’t been completely loving the new era of the 40′s’, but I find it certainly worked best thus far with 42. Some of the twists were slightly altered from 41 showing production had learned some of their faults, while also adding some new interesting twists. I think the cast really pops here, especially in our winner! 14) 40: Winners at War An all winners season, what’s not to love? I do find a different boot order could have made for a much more entertaining season, but what we were given was still some of the closest challenges and fiercest competition we’ve seen. I support the win of our second two-time winner, and will forever remember being touched by Ethan’s journey on Extinction 15) 13: Cook Islands Once again another theme that might not have played out so great in hindsight, but it did lead to our most diverse casting yet and I think it pays out on screen. The birth of legendary players like Parvati, Ozzy, Penner, Yul, etc. and an all-timer moment when Jeff asks “Candice, from Raro tribe?!?” 16) 27: Blood vs Water I do find the pre-merge a bit salty and a bit of a downer, but once the season starts picking up momentum it pays out. Some comedic moments with our “coconut bandits”, it also gave us the historic moment of someone voting out their mom! I very much enjoy the winner and their journey here 17) 29: Blood vs Water 2 This is another season that I think plays much better on a re-watch than live at the time. I always loved the winner and their journey, but some underperforming cast members does drag this down a bit. There are some really unique moments & dynamics playing out with the only all original cast BvW theme however, worth revisiting 18) 38: Edge of Extinction The theme may be awful, but I really support the original cast in play and how hard everyone was playing. I think the theme and how the season ultimately plays out drags this down a lot further for most people, but I’d love to see characters like Devons, Victoria, Lauren, even Reem return for another try 19) 31: Cambodia - Second Chances What should be the “ultimate Survivor super-fan season” ends up playing out a bit too unnecessarily complex for me, but still it cannot be denied how strong the returning cast is and how hard everyone is playing. An all-time tribal when an idol blocks a record 9 votes, plus a great winner, an overall good season 20) 12: Panama Perhaps the most uneven season in terms of tribes between the explosive Casaya and the tepid La Mina, it has some very iconic, comedic moments (mostly from Shane) and the birth of our queen Cirie! 21) 4: Marquesas A very underrated season. While the change in location last minute does show on screen production-wise at times (a kite challenge, really?) we get our first big power flip with the dismantling of the Roto Four, and our first “rocking out”, as well as the many firsts in our winner!
————
Ain’t No Hershey Bar 22) 17: Gabon Probably the biggest cluster-fuck of a season, it is messy in all the right ways. One of those “so bad it’s good” type of situations, I can’t help but grab the popcorn and take in all the salt & sass. It also has one of our best landscapes, I’ll never forget the moment Ace is doing a confessional and an elephant just walks into the background for a sip of water 23) 41 A very polarizing season, lots to love and to dislike. Production was trying out a lot of firsts here, and while they don’t all pay off I find what does makes for an overall enjoyable enough season. I think a re-edit could make for a more entertaining experience, especially in regards to our winner 24) 3: Africa I do find the earlier seasons can be a bit drier or slower compared to more modern eras, but Africa certainly brought us our most dangerous season. Between the lions, the lack of water & food, and the intense sun, this may be the best season for people actually wanting surviving in their Survivor 25) 19: Samoa This season is very heavily edited towards a certain character, so mileage varies depending on your opinion of him, but the way Russell outmaneuvers not only the cast but production is masterclass. I don’t support all of the gameplay, but it does make for entertaining TV 26) 9: Vanuatu Another season that plays better in a re-watch than at the time. I think the men vs women theme works better this time around, and the ultimate winner’s path does allow for a lot of good conversation & commentary 27) 1: Borneo The one that started it all. Production doesn’t quite have everything figured out yet, which can make for a bit of a clunky watch, but what we get here is the template & groundwork for every season to come. Thankfully we had a winner with the foresight to see the real potential of this game that is Survivor 28) 43 A very great cast that I think is unfortunately brought down by the current metagame, as well as a confusing edit and a not so favourable winner. I do think Jesse’s big borrowed idol move will go down as an all-timer, but that alone is not enough to catapult this season any higher
29) 2: Australian Outback Some big memorable moments as well as a good balance between gameplay & survival elements, it’s a shame the older editing & pacing make for a bit of a calmer watch at times. Survivor was never more popular than at this moment however and it really shows in the reunion! 30) 26: Caramoan There’s not a lot of great stuff in this season, between the negative moments with Brandon & Phillip and Brenda & Dawn you would hope for some great strategic gameplay, but there’s not really that either. Yet somehow I end up being drawn back to this season, I guess it hurts so good! 31) 14: Fiji An awful theme. Wow, I wonder who will dominate, the Haves or the Have Nots?! You can also feel the recruitment in regards to casting. But we still have one of our more diverse casts with some bigger, historical moments that I think play better through a modern day perspective 32) 30: Worlds Apart Similar to Caramoan, I find there are a lot of downer moments that drag this season down (Will being awful to Shirin, Dan overall, Joe in hindsight), but yet I am drawn back to it. If you enjoy awkward moments then Vince is comedic gold, and Rodney definitely plays much funnier a second time around 33) 36: Ghost Island This theme should have been great, but it really doesn’t pay off. The cast I also found was a bit dull, but the dynamic of Wendell & Dom really gives this some mileage 34) 23: South Pacific An instance of a good but unfortunately under-edited winner in a not so great season. The overtones of religion & Catholicism hamper the gameplay, and the casting isn’t at it’s strongest. Nothing awful here, but nothing fantastic either 35) 11: Guatemala Our first captains season that unfortunately doesn’t seem to “pop”. Another case of an under-edited winner, there isn’t much great gameplay to speak of. The Mayan temples are however beautiful, and we do get the birth of the Immunity Idol 36) 34: Game Changers Was this Game Changers, or Game Players? Because this cast certainly didn’t feel legendary in the way the theme suggests. The boot order also left a lot to be desired, and we get the messy situation with Varner... if not for a few comedic moments this could have easily slipped down a tier
————
Forget You, Go Home, Goodbye 37) 35: Heroes vs Healers vs Hustlers The birth of the fire making twist, which for me did not play out well. Some may enjoy the winners journey here, I ultimately found it disappointing and frustrating. Some lackluster challenges as well as a confusing theme made for an overall letdown of a season 38) 8: All Stars At the time I got swept up in the love story of Rob & Amber, but in re-watching the season there is a lot of saltiness, as well as some ugly situations (Jenna’s departure commentary, Rich & Sue). In wanting to get swept up in gameplay I found very little to be excited about 39) 39: Island of the Idols Obviously we know why this is a bottom tier season, but that aside I do think there was some great characters & moments that save this from being the worst season. The theme was bad to begin with so it was never destined for greatness lol 40) 24: One World I love the theme of putting everyone on one beach, unfortunately the recruitment casting along with the split of men vs women made this season a drag. I love the winner and their gameplay, but there are a lot of forgettable castaways here, not to mention one of the most polarizing player in Colton  41) 21: Nicaragua  Not much to love here, a pretty poor cast with some sloppy gameplay and a mild winner. If the most memorable part about the season is two people quitting, you know there’s a problem 42) 22: Redemption Island I guess mileage really varies depending on your love for Boston Rob, but I feel like this season was served to him on a silver platter. I guess it answers the question is it fun to see a big-leaguer play in the minors with the rookies? The answer is no, no it is not 43) 5: Thailand Here it is, the worst season of Survivor. The ugliness and mishandling of the Ghandia & Ted situation, the emotionless cold winner, the pitiful gameplay, it’s all here! I will however never forget that Robb strangled Clay during a challenge and that he brought a skateboard to the jungle!

“A lot can change in a year.”
I think it’s been three years since I’ve logged onto here. And man, life is so different compared to how things were then. Between COVID, family issues, my delayed nursing career, etc., it was as if God had allowed everything I’d planned for the future to fall apart. With my love life, I was so disheartened. I started getting to know different guys but nothing felt right. At one point, I tried online dating, which didn’t work for me either. I’d pray about each person, but every time, He’d given me no peace about moving forward. Eventually, I realized there were still a lot of things I had to work on and work through before being in a relationship. So, one of the ladies at church helped counsel me on that too. Overall, I felt so lost and broken in that season of life. And in 2021, God began allowing me a sneak peek into what He had in store for my future. But honestly, I had no idea at the time.
That July, I was a bridesmaid again (this was my eighth wedding as one) and Rachelle and Joy were doing our hair and makeup that day. While we were getting ready, Joy said something to me along the lines of, “Hey, you should date Joel!” But I just laughed it off not thinking anything of it. He and I had grown up together but we’d never really talked before. Even so, I never thought he’d see me that way.
Fast forward to the fall and winter of that year. I was asked to help coach speech for the Christmas film at church. And to my surprise, Joel was one of the actors. I respected him for wanting to be involved since he seemed more the behind the scenes type of person. Knowing he’d be there, I’d try to look nice for practices or filming time. I felt like a schoolgirl with a crush. I remember how he came up close to me one time asking for help with his lines. And I fumbled my words and handed his script back to him. My feelings were getting the best of me and I hated it. One time, there was a 90s song he was thinking of that I, for some reason, randomly started humming which shocked him. And he laughed when I helped translate one of his jokes when the others didn’t get it. We’d talk here and there, but nothing happened after that. Though I wouldn’t have admitted it then, I’d always keep an eye out for him. When he wasn’t in Sunday school or church, I’d get a bit disappointed.
In the spring of 2022, there was a guy from Philippines that I’d been getting to know. After a few weeks of messaging and video calling each other, he asked me to be his girlfriend. I told him I wanted more time to get to know him more first which he was understanding of. But after a couple months of talking and praying about it, I didn’t think he was the right person for me. So that was that.
There was a young adults event at the beach in the summer of 2022. And Joel was there. I swear I saw him in my peripherals staring at me. He came up to chat about that viral “corn” song and we laughed. But then I quickly ran off in fear. There was another time when Sunday school ended and he brought up college schedules and if I remembered having certain classes. I swear, it was as if he was trying to make conversation with me. But I was skeptical, thinking "there's no way he's trying to get to know me."
My constant thoughts were, “he could never see me like that,” “I might be too much for him,” and so on.
And then I went on a trip to Cuba. And the whole time I was there, I prayed about Joel. It was there I finally admitted that, yes, I had feelings for him and it freaked me out. It was October 14, 2022 when we flew home. And on the plane, I thought about Joel and how he could never have feelings for me in return. So I asked God for sign: if nothing with Joel happens by the end of 2022, then I would move on with my life.
Then Christmas happened, and while we were at church, I spontaneously asked him to spend the day with me and my family. I didn’t think he’d say yes. I didn’t think he’d show up. And an hour later, there he was at the door. We spent the whole day talking, and we had way more in common than I’d thought. It was 11pm and right before he left he asked me out for a coffee date. And when he came back from his trip to Nova Scotia, we went on our first date.
He asked me to be his girlfriend on January 17, 2023. Our first kiss was on January 21 in my parents' living room after I told him I couldn't believe I was his girlfriend. He told me he loved me on Valentine's Day. In April, he said he wanted to marry me, and I told him I've known I wanted to marry him since he first came over at Christmas; so he said he'd buy a ring. On June 2nd at the art gallery, he asked me to marry him. We were married at the church we grew up in, in front of our loved ones on Saturday, October 14, 2023.
And every day, I get to come home to the person I’d prayed for since I was seventeen. Joel is everything I’ve hoped and prayed and waited for and more. He is sweet, loving, thoughtful, patient, kind and so handsome. He loves me greatly. I love him greatly in return. I can’t believe I get to call him my husband. And I can’t believe God had him right there beside me all along.
Ephesians 4:20🧡

The first half of 2023 is almost done. A lot of challenges, struggles, and victories are now part of an unforgettable learning experience.
I want to share with you 6 strategies that can help us finish strong for the next second half of the year. Here we go:
1. Positive Outlook: We should naturally have an optimistic mindset, which allows us to focus on the bright side of life and find joy in everyday experiences.
Everything has a different side like a coin. May positive and negative talaga. Always focus on the positives. Sabi nga ni Catriona Gray our Miss World Philippines — we need to see situations with a silver lining.
2. Gratitude: Expressing gratitude for the good things in your life because it can contribute to a sense of happiness. When you appreciate and acknowledge the positive aspects of your life, it can enhance your overall well-being.
Yung coffee break ko sa office na black coffee, super kinaka thankful ko yun haha! Yung spotify app ko na any genre of music ay ma pplay ko base on my mood na aappreciate ko yun. We don’t need to have BIG purchases or incredible achievements to express gratitude kasi even makatulog ka lang sa gabi is a big thing na. Many people had a hard time sleeping at night and it can give a negative impact sa health ng isang individual. So stay grateful.
3. Healthy Relationships: Strong connections and positive relationships with family, friends, and loved ones can contribute to your happiness. Having a support system and feeling loved and supported can bring joy and contentment.
Yes, the world is indeed getting smaller because of the internet. Different social media apps. Pero nothing beats yung small cirle naten. The one who truly cares and understands kung ano o sino ka as a person.
Our families and friends are the true gems. Lalo na if you have a good relationship with them. I strongly believe na we are always wearing a mask and it depends on who we are with. Sure ako pag naging talkative and makulit ka. Yan ang geniune cirle mo. Have a blast.
4. Purpose and Meaning: When you have a sense of purpose or meaning in your life, it can bring a deep sense of fulfillment and happiness. Engaging in activities and pursuing goals that align with your values and passions can contribute to your overall well-being.
This is very important. It’s very subjective din dahil naka depende sa cultural and beliefs ang purpose ng tao. Iba iba din tayo ng upbringing and experiences. Kadalasan ng mga youth eto ang pinag dadaanan. They are looking and finding themselves.
Always stay curios, try as many things as possible. You may also experience some mistakes in life wag lang sobra dahil it may greatly impact you sa future just enough lang para may matutunan ka.
Hinahanap ba to? I don’t know but if it’s your calling. You will not find it but it will FIND you. Just do it.
5. Positive Self-Care Habits: Taking care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally can contribute to your happiness. Engaging in regular exercise, practicing self-care activities, and managing stress can boost your mood and overall sense of well-being.
If you like what you are seeing in the mirror, tataas confidence mo. If you want to improve physically it takes time and disciple din. You should also learn and have discernment hindi lahat ng pieces of advice na mapupulot mo sa internet nowadays may be right and fit for you. Always seek advice sa mga experts.
Kaya if you want to be fit and healthy haha! This is Chester G. I am also an experienced fitness coach. Don’t hesitate to message me. Excited hearing from you.
6. Mindfulness and Living in the Present: Being present and mindful can help you fully enjoy and appreciate each moment. By focusing on the present rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, you can cultivate a greater sense of happiness.
By thinking the past medyo di ka makaka move on kasi baka lies na yung voice na ma accept mo. Na baka yung little demon voice will say wala ka na pag asa mag bago. Kino konsensya ka ng mga pagkakamali mo. NO. Always look and have that faith for greater things. It’s good to have goals. To have a wonderful future that we’ve set. Pero no one can predict the future. No one.
Kaya focus ka sa present. Galingan mo sa present go all in. This is a gift and magugulat ka nalang na di mo na namamalayan. Nag eenjoy ka sa ginagawa mo. Until yung future na ini aim mo. Na reached mo na pala unknowingly.
I loved the quote from Kung Fu Panda that says “Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, but Today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.” — Oogway.
We may feel down at times. Normal yan. Life has a vicious cycle. We have to accept that fact. Like the seasons of nature, there are also Personal Seasons in life: The season of winter — sadness, heartbreak, loneliness, and sickness. Season of spring — hope, new beginnings, opportunities. Season of summer — signs of growth, need for protection, an abundance of distractions.
Kaya tuloy ka lang kaibigan, tatagan mo loob mo. Dipa tapos ang laban. Let’s finish well and Hope for the best. Talk to you soon.

Run it Back
“Hardest-working, best conditioned, most professional, unselfish, toughest, meanest, nastiest team in the NBA.”
One of the best memories I have since becoming a fan of the Miami Heat is that iconic clutch 3 of Ray Allen in game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals. I can remember watching that live on TV and after he made the shot, I was jumping and screaming in the living room because, man, that felt so crazy! It was one of those rare moments in my life when I can say I felt this thing called euphoria; I was just watching that game on TV because I'm from the Philippines and I already felt intense emotions, what more are the people who are actually in the arena, right? Let alone the players and the coaching staff... it must have been one of the best nights of their lives. That was the kind of moment where you can say "I had the time of my life." That clutch 3 pointer made me feel euphoric for about a week, lol.
There are some people who will find it weird that I felt happy and felt as if the success of the Miami Heat at that year's NBA finals was also mine but that's what makes being a fan so exciting, right? You felt a sense of belongingness in the success of someone you look up to. I grew up with an inferiority complex. I always feel bad about not just being average but below average. I guess this is because I grew up in an Asian society wherein academic success is very valuable. It's either you're the gifted kid or you're not. In school, there were times wherein teachers would get frustrated with me because I'm slow in learning things. As a kid, I get so scared of not learning things easily because the kids in my class are all so smart, leaving the “outcasts” like me the feeling of wanting to just hide at the back of the classroom so the teachers will not get mad at you. I never really had proper friends in school, until high school. During elementary school, I'm almost always on my own. So watching sports games became a solitude. I am a sucker for rags to riches stories. That's why the stories of the athletes who came from humble beginnings and ended up being successful are my favorite. However, most of us are used to knowing the stories of these superstars in the sports world. Making it in the league is not the end of it, though because you still have to prove your worth. I was not really into the undrafted players before because most of the time they are just on the sides as the stars are always the main characters of the games. Until I learned about Duncan Robinson.
I guess the NBA 2013 finals was the last time I was fully invested in the Miami Heat and the NBA as a whole because I became busy with a lot of things in my personal life. I totally forgot about the basketball world until the pandemic hits and my favorite artists (mainly iKON) are not that active. I can remember dropping by at the main office of my work for some errands (I work at a government agency but our office building is separated from the main office) when I notice a familiar team on their TV. The staff were watching a basketball game, it was a Heat game and they won that game. (In case anyone's wondering why I'm at the office during a basketball game, I live in the Philippines and the timezone here is different. Live NBA games here are in the mornings). Of course, after the game they interviewed the best player of the night and it was Duncan Robinson. At that moment I realized that it's been years since the last time I watched an NBA game and the guy is not familiar with me. After that I researched about him and the current Miami Heat roster and long story short, it reignited my love for the game and for my team.
Duncan is not the only undrafted player in the NBA who gets minutes but it was his journey towards the NBA that made me become interested. His journey to the NBA is inspirational because he was undrafted yet he did not give up on his dreams. He worked so hard to get to where he is today. From Division III in college to being an undrafted player to earning a two-way contract and then finally to a $90 million dollar contract with the Miami Heat, I can’t help but feel inspired by that journey. And while I started watching Heat games again, other undrafted players in the roster also caught my attention like Max Strus and Caleb Martin. Max was also undrafted and went from one team to another and just when he was about to get the opportunity to have playing minutes, he got injured. But like Duncan, he worked hard and now after he got his shot with the Heat, he was signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Caleb, on the other hand, is also an undrafted player. At the 2019 NBA Draft, he watched his twin brother get drafted while he was not. Although he was eventually signed to the same team as his twin, he got cut off. Fast forward to today, he is now a vital player for the Heat. Guys like them are proof that just because it didn't work out the “normal way” does not mean it’s the end of the journey. They did not let adversity bring them down, instead they used it as a fuel to work harder. Somehow, their journey served as my motivation to keep going.
I was so used to seeing success stories and sometimes I feel jealous when others win in life while I feel stuck in the rock bottom. It’s difficult to stay motivated when you see others having it easy. But watching the stories of undrafted players like Duncan, Max and Caleb through Inside the Heat episodes, I feel less alone (if I describe it correctly). They are a living testament that you never lose when you keep working hard. When your focus is on yourself and not on others, then you can have more time to improve your skills and reflect on your weaknesses and turn your adversities into opportunities to get better. Just like what Olivia Rodrigo said in her song Jealousy: their win is not my loss. I should stop comparing my journey with others because we all have different timelines. What works for one does not mean it will work for the rest of us.
So now as I reminisce about the previous NBA season, I can’t help but feel some sense of “panghihinayang” because the Heat almost won the championship.I remember how hard I was praying last year to let the Heat advanced to the playoffs because I really wanted them to win the chip while my three favorite undrafted players, Duncan, Max and Caleb are still on the same team. Also, they would have made history for being the first play-in team to win the championship; a team with about 70% of their roster are undrafted players. Now that we are in the new season, Max is on a different team now while Duncan and Caleb are still on the Heat. What these three have taught me time and time again is that you have to learn to accept that life has its way of making things work for you although sometimes it’s not in the way you expect it to be and it’s okay. What matters the most is you refuse to give up when adversities hit you - you always have to run it back. Run it back in a sense that you should keep going even if things get difficult. Turn your breakdowns into breakthroughs. Turn your adversities into opportunities. Turn your setbacks into great comebacks. As long as you are breathing, keep going. After all, if God keeps on giving you another day to live it means He still has plans for you. And those plans are meant to prosper not harm you.
X,
TinaMae
PS, I really hope this is the year that the Heat finally get their 4th championship.

This week I’m so fired up to welcome Jonathan Dahuya to The Podcast for a unique conversation about how coaching has led him into other great professional endeavors. Jonathan was a Division I strength and conditioning coach who has made a professional pivot into real estate and provides some great insight into how the coaching world has transferred to the “real world”. Throughout the 30 minutes plus conversation, Jonathan and I get into:
1)    A voyage that led him to choose another vocation
2)    Skills that coaches develop that have “transfer” to the real world
3)    Where who you are and who the staff/admin you work with may have a different view of what that should be.
4)    The value of asking “what do you want me to accomplish?”
5)    Aspects of coaching that provided issues in his family life, thus driving the decision to change professions
6)    What drove him to his latest professional venture.
7)    How coaches should practice what they preach about embracing change when they get to a point where they need to make a change.
I really can’t thank Jonathan enough for sharing so much of his voyage in and out of the coaching world. It’s a transition that isn’t easy on anyone, but we all should always happy to see someone find a better way for themselves, in and out of coaching. Nike Partners With Dove to Help Build Body Confidence in Girls
Tumblr media
Sport can be a powerful force in a girl’s life. Girls who participate in physical activity — and stay with it through adolescence — are more likely to have higher body confidence and experience positive health benefits throughout their lives.
When puberty hits, however, and girls experience unique and significant changes to their bodies — a first period, new curves, breast development — they can feel self-conscious about their appearance and exposed and vulnerable to judgement and comparison. This can be amplified in sports environments, both on and off the field.
Globally, 45 percent of teenage girls are dropping out of sport, at twice the rate of boys. New research from Nike and Dove shows that the biggest reason girls drop out is the impact the sports environment can have on their body confidence and self-esteem. To change that environment, coaches are uniquely positioned to help positively influence girls’ perceptions of their bodies. In fact, in Nike and Dove’s research, 74 percent of girls say their coach was the reason they felt more confident.
That’s why Nike and Dove have partnered to launch Body Confident Sport, a first-of-its-kind, scientifically proven set of coaching tools for 11- to 17-year-old girls that will help build their body confidence and make them feel like sport is a place where they belong.
Body Confident Sport was co-developed by Nike and Dove over two years in partnership with world-renowned experts — including the Centre for Appearance Research and the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport — and includes input from nearly 2,000 adolescents across France, India, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The online tool includes coaching steps that were scientifically proven to improve self-esteem and body confidence in clinical trials with more than 1,200 girls.
“By shifting the conversation from what their bodies look like to what their bodies can do, we inspire more girls to stay in sport and benefit from it,” says Vanessa Garcia-Brito, VP, NIKE, Inc. Chief Social & Community Impact Officer. “With more girls in sports, we believe we’re creating the next generation of female leaders and changemakers who will move the world forward.” Body Confident Sport aims to reach 1 million young people around the world to improve their body confidence — and has the potential to reach even more — and underscores Dove and Nike’s long-standing commitments to support women and girls. The partnership leverages each brand’s strengths — Nike as the biggest champion of athletes and sport, and Dove as the world’s largest provider of self-esteem education and body-confidence education — to create greater change globally, with an eye toward a more equitable future for women and girls, on and off the field.
This partnership and tool build upon Nike’s deep body of worldwide work to increase girls’ participation in play and sport and recruit and train more representative coaches. Earlier this month, Nike launched “You Got This,” a YouTube series with and for 10- to 13-year-old girls that uses the power of sport to help them find confidence and a sense of self. It began a partnership with Spotify that aims to inspire 10- to 17-year-old girls in the United Kingdom to use dance to move regularly. These efforts complement the company’s work in Manila at The Courtyard, where Nike has partnered with Girls Got Game Philippines, as well as Nike’s previous partnership with the Tucker Center to provide a free, evidence-based digital tool to help coach girls around the world.
Nike and Dove’s open-source Body Confident Sport tool is available, free of charge, at bodyconfidentsport.com.
