Is there a list out there of what I like to call mixed/main events? Like how Resounding Twilight Parade is considered a Leo/need event despite being mixed, same thing with Exciting Picnic being a N25 event.

Leo/need currently has the most key story mixed events, with 3. Those being Resounding Twilight Parade (which develops the plot with STANDOUT that was started in Honami's event prior), Singing With You In A World Where Sakura Dance (which develops Ichika's side of that plot leading up to Resonate With You), and In the Corner of A Resonant Town (which covers Shiho's feelings before L/n's one-man show in Get Over It.).

MORE MORE JUMP! has none, but have had some in the past. Beyond Prayers, the Tomorrow We Wish For (where MMJ volunteer as shrine maidens featuring a brief segment covering some of Haruka's past) and Operation♡Secret Valentine! (where Airi helps Saki and Emu make Valentine's treats) were marked as key stories for a few months before having their tags removed, while the recent Airi-centric event, Slapstick cafe ●REC!! (which is about MMJ filming a TV spot at a local cafe), had its tag removed after a few weeks because apparently it was added by mistake. Honestly none of them contribute a huge amount to MMJ's overall plot so removing them is fair. Slapstick cafe probably is most plot relevant despite being the one that was marked as key story by mistake, but the tag being removed probably means it's not very important.

Vivid BAD SQUAD only has one: Ringing Sounds at the Summer Festival. This wasn't marked as a key story until long after it was released, and EN still hasn't received the update which adds the tag. The reason it was retroactively tagged is probably due to covering parts of Akito's backstory, specifically how he got into music, that aren't covered in a unit event.

WonderlandsxShowtime also has one: A Brand New Year! Lion Dance Robot's New Year's Show!. Tsukasa decides to take up acting opportunities outside PXL/WxS at the end of the event, which leads directly into Amidst a Dream, Towards the Shining Stars.

25-Ji, Nightcord de. has 2 mixed event key stories currently, those being Tell Me Your Problems! Exciting Picnic and At This Festival Colored By Twilight. The first one carries on from the end of Secret Distance, developing Mizuki and Ena's relationship before My Footprints, Your Destination, and the latter is where Mafuyu starts to rediscover more of her real self when she gets put on first aid duty at Shibuya festival, which is brought up in later events. Intersecting Melodies, Glowing Warmth used to be tagged as key story, but it was later removed, probably because it was more important to Mafuyu's individual character arc than it was to N25 collectively.

According to my AO3 history the last thing I read was actually a reread of Worth it for the Laughter lol (the timing)

And yes I absolutely recommend it! It's so cute (for those who don't know, it's about Leo getting his wisdom teeth out).

My favorite part of this fic is when Draxum calls Leo stupid and Donnie kicks him in the shin. ^^

As for last fic I read that wasn't a reread (or something getting updated with a new chapter), it was to thine own self by true by inkandstone, which is actually a 2012 fic about Donnie using a truth serum on an unwilling Mikey. I haven't watched 2012, it just got recced in one of the discord servers and I decided to read it lol. It was good though! I love "truth potion gone wrong" scenarios.

76. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of I May Be Invisible, But I Still Look Good? 

A few! Maybe the biggest one is a whole subplot I cut concerning the fire elemental (the one Donnie almost kills). While I had that particular moment in mind for a long time, originally the resolution to that moment was going to be the reveal that the fire elemental wasn't actually going along with the plot to revive the Witch of the Depths entirely willingly, but rather their family had been forced into it. the fire elemental would reveal that their own sibling had also been cursed by the charm, and it was their body that would be used to house the Witch's soul. The fire elemental was then going to give Donnie the spell, one sibling just trying to help their family to another, and later on in the final fight the fire elemental would come to their aid.

This subplot ended up being too unwieldy and didn't really contribute much to the actual themes and plot so in the end the fire elemental became some cult follower like the rest of them who got so scared by Donnie they peaced right out.

Btw to be clear, even though we will see some other fire elementals in the final fight (as I alluded to with Big Mama's warning in chapter 14), none of them are that specific fire elemental. Donnie scared off their proverbial pants and they're never coming back lol

I met Rafa Saavedra in 1994 at a show through mutual friends, we immediately bonded over our love for Alaska (Pegamoides, Dinarama, Fangoria), 60's Kitsh and Pop Culture, he was one of the first person who taught me in my teens more about the Spanish underground music scene, he was a lover of la movida madrileña, new wave and post-punk, he had a direct connection in Spain that always sent him current music at the time and he always shared it with us, this was before the internet and social media were invented, he was always up to date in what was happening at the moment musically back then. Many knew him as Rafa Dro. as his dj name taking it from Spain's Aviador Dro and always describing himself as "Selector de Frecuencias" after the band's song which also was the name of his weekly radio show of the same name: http://selector.podomatic.com/ http://selector.blogspot.com/ where you can see his playlists and interviews with many artists through the years.

Rafa became a big influence on my life growing up in Tijuana, his knowledge of music was impeccable, always keeping me updated on new music and how I would like it, he knew my style well and he was always right. We djed several times together at different parties, when I showed him something new to me, something I'd discovered, he already knew about it, he knew when it came out, what label was it on and the year, he had a memory vault like no one.

Rafa was also very observant of his surroundings and had a great eye for things, moments, situations which many of them he captured and posted on his Tumblr http://rafadro.tumblr.com/ and always writing the right caption for it which made you understand and think.

I became a big fan of his blog Crossfader Network, a personal diary of his experiences through out the city of Tijuana often documenting the parties he went to, music reviews, and photos with one word of sentence that explained what he was trying to transmit. Living in L.A. for the past 12 years, he was my window of what was going on in my hometown. He was the first person I know to do Fanzines in in the city.

He wrote several books "Esto no es una salida" (This is not an escape). "Postcards de ocio y odio" (Postcards of leisure and hate) (La Espina Dorsal, 1996), Buten Smileys (Yoremito, 1997), Lejos del Noise (Away from the noise) (Moho, 2003). In 2010 he won the State Prize for Literature in Cultural Journalism awarded by the Institute of Culture of Baja California. His book, “Border Pop,” won Baja California’s prize for literature in 2012.

He never strived to be a famous, he wrote from his heart, his own experiences, his enthusiasm for music and his passion for culture, he was dedicated and 100% in love with Tijuana and delivered his message clearly. He was beloved by everyone in the city and beyond the city, Rafa always had a smile on his face, he always had something interesting to talk about, always something to contribute, to many local artists and musicians, he was the John Peel of Tijuana. In my eyes, he was the ambassador of the city to the world and that's what made him famous to me. He coined the phrase "Tijuana Makes Me Happy" which became Nortec's most known song.

In the last past years, we became even closer, and since we're both born a few days apart in August we would celebrate our birthdays together sometimes. This last summer, I celebrated my birthday in Tijuana and he came to see me and hang out before the party, at that moment while talking I gave him a long hug and a kiss on the cheek, (mind you I'm not the most affectionate person) and told him he's always been the coolest friend, I felt him at that moment. I would always call him "eternal teenager" and he would call me "oldteen" because we both feel the essence of youth within us. Both being Leos, we understood each other very well.

Due to his heart condition at an early age, a few years ago he discovered his heart rate was at it's lowest of 4.0, under those conditions his only exercise was walking which he documented in the heart warming short video "Caminatas" https://vimeo.com/46787385

Three weeks after we saw each other, he went into cardiac arrest and was in intensive care, spending the past couple of weeks at the hospital, always very optimistic and with that sense of humor that characterized him, he kept documenting his life as he always did.

I knew Rafa, and I know he "knew". A day before having heart surgery, he wrote on his Facebook status: "En route with the best mood and strength possible, to all those possible Tomorrows. Love you all, pals" along with a note that read: 16/Sep/13 "This has been good for many things: our own fragility, pain, absences, the spiral echo of our memories, the power of love, friendship that lasts, all those moments that we (re)lived being alone with ourselves. Thank you for everything with love and affection. Electric hugs, Rafa Saavedra.

On the afternoon of September 17th, 2013 he passed away at the young age of 46. A lovable local hero that understood all the nuances of a complex city such as Tijuana. In fact, he may have been the city's best unofficial anthropologist.

Kiro’s Birth Chart- A Character Astrological Study

It’s already the 9th where I am so here’s another super long post for our sunshine Kiro! Unfortunately I couldn’t go in much detail in the end as much as I would like because of risking very specific spoilers as I want everyone to have a chance of enjoying his own astrological study among the other boys. However, it is very similar to how I did my analysis here which had lots and lots of spoilers, so hopefully this will make up for the parts where I couldn’t expand on. So if you would like to read it to enhance your understanding and don’t mind spoilers, you are most welcome to have a read! I did also update it on just a few more things so if you want to stay updated on that post, you can have a read of it too! Again, if there is anything you would like to ask or need clarifying on, feel free to send an ask and I’ll try to answer with the best of my ability! 

What is Astrology? 

Astrology is the study of stars- the placements and movements of different celestial bodies to correlate what’s happening on Earth. It comes from the early Latin word astrologia. 

There’s a rule that we live by- 

As above so below

This means whatever happens within our solar system will ultimately affect us here on Earth. For example, the moon governs our emotions, and since our body is approximately 70% water, why wouldn’t the moon affect us too? But it’s not just us, it's the moon’s gravitational pull on the oceans, in the same sense, it’s also the moodiness you may feel during full moons!

There’s many aspects to Astrology, and that would normally be too much for a single post so I’ll be elaborating on the major contributions to one’s birth chart. This will include the planets and the signs. Kiro’s exact birth time is unfortunately unknown, but we’ll have to do the best with what we’ve been given. 

There’s the inner planets, consisting of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars and Venus, moving quickly within the chart. Then there’s the outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto, the slower moving planets. And of course, the different signs of the zodiac with different personalities. They follow the order beginning with Aries, then Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and finally Pisces.

Kiro’s Birth Chart 

Sun ☉ The Sun represents our character, personal identity and ego. Your star sign is also known as your Sun sign. It is the “you”. The “Self”. It shows your creative force, confidence, focus and our will to live. It’s the driving force of our charts in many ways, like how it is centred in our solar system. It’s the part of us that is the “adult”, censoring the “inner child”, and overall provides information on our vitality, and what we came to do.

Kiro’s Sun is in Aries ♈︎ Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. They have big personalities, with lots of charisma and passion. They are fiery, energetic, active, direct and straightforward as the first set out to start something and first to finish it. They’re natural born athletes and leaders, naturally inclined to get as much done. They’re not big planners of the future, as the most important thing to an Aries is the moment of right now. They enjoy vigorous, motivational, brave and adventurous activities, and love trying out new things. Like Geminis, they can’t sit still and need the feeling of being able to move towards a goal. They generally know what they want and the quickest way to get it. They enjoy a challenge, and are the happiest when life is active and always on the go. There's a childlike quality to Aries Suns, and often quite charming, too!

Kiro is a natural Aries. He’s fun, full of vigour and loves life’s challenges through physical trials such as the 10km run with MC, testing his mental strengths with his quick adaptation and problem solving skills as well as his empathic skills as an actor. Kiro as an Aries Sun is still undoubtedly humble no matter what, as he appreciates his fans and cherishing the moments with the people around him (plus food) and especially as he had suffered a lot when he was a child, why he would want to live life the fullest.

This is very fitting for him to be an idol as this creates more opportunity to travel the world and experience more that other people may not be able to have (and he’s so naturally good at it as well.) He can be stubborn and hot-headed, like having to perfect his craft and wanting to strive to achieve his personal best in everything as fast as possible with purpose and drive. This definitely contributes with the other planets in his chart. Kiro is seen to be the “Sun” to everyone, who is very charming and youthful, captivating everyone with his fiery presence. “Stamina is necessary on stage. Although Kiro lives his life as an Aries, his other placements contribute to the deeper side to him that few know about. His hardships in the past enables him to become the passionate superstar we know today- not wanting others to feel the same pain that he felt. On and off stage, he can lead very different lives, especially when his moon is in Cancer.

Moon ☾ The Moon in our charts show what your home is like, your upbringing, the relationship between your mother, the unconscious, your instincts and what you need. It tells us a lot about a person’s emotions, how they deal with it and how they express it to others.

Kiro’s Moon is in Cancer ♋︎ This water sign opposes the fire sign of Aries. The Moon is "at home" in the sign of Cancer, as the Moon is the natural ruler of the sign. They have a tendency to be caught up in emotions, with it guiding their actions more than thoughts. Cancer moons are never detached, seeking familiarly, security, and comfort for their home and the people around them. These are devoted and loving people with nurturing personalities. However, it’s easier to feel more insecure and have more mood swings with this sign in their Moon. Their unique outlook in life is something to appreciate, especially with their sense of humour and fun. Another thing is that these people can be very protective of themselves and others, unwilling to trade secrets, crawling back into their shell like a crab- as the crab is the symbol of Cancer.

Behind the stage, Kiro feels things and experiences things on a deeper level than others, with a more mysterious side and life that rarely shows. Although he enjoys being on stage, he might prefer being behind the scenes a bit more, cosy and alone with MC. It can be easy for him to be swept up in his emotions, acting out on bursts of emotions and quick-thoughts. Cancers are also really good at reading and detecting lies from other people. They are great emotional comforters because they can intuitively recognise a situation well and how to help fix it. Kiro’s amazing at figuring emotions out and has done it on multiple occasions.

Looking into his eyes, I seemed to find a very different side of Kiro. A side that is full of stories, but a struggle to protect something, a side of him even more dazzling and brilliant than when he’s on stage. -Livestream Date

Mercury ☿ Mercury is the communication planet. When you write, speak, absorb information and how rational we are, you’re using your Mercury. It refines our Sun sign and helps define how we take in and give out information. It also talks about short distance travelling, governing your thirst for knowledge, your wit and negotiating skills. If someone is an excellent talker, it’s thanks to their Mercury placements.

Kiro’s Mercury is in Aries ♈︎ Being in the sign of Aries means that Kiro is able to make quick decisions, can be direct and straightforward in speech, possessing an innocent charm, and can easily motivate others with his enthusiasm. Aries Mercury don’t have a lot of patience when it comes to communication, and are usually frustrated when people don’t understand or are disappointed when others don’t accept their opinions smoothly. Venus ♀︎ The planet Venus is ultimately the planet of love, beauty, wealth, our material things and what we do with all that sort of jazz. It’s the pleasures, our sentiments, what we do for leisure and what we value. Grace, charm, creativity, entertainment are ruled by Venus. We can use this planet to see how we approach relationships of the heart, investigate our ability to attract and the attraction to others (or things).

Kiro’s Venus is in Pisces ♓︎ Venus in Pisces people project themselves as dreamy, soft-hearted partners. Everything about the way they flirt promises a lovely time. They’re charming, playful, and appreciate romance especially the arts of music and poetry. Pisces Venus want others to know that their love is unconditional, as they love and accept everything for that their lover is. They enjoy tender moments and romantic times whenever possible. However, they fear hurting others and may even want to escape from reality from time to time.

It is evident that Kiro genuinely loves music.

He has written many songs about MC, including “My Treasure” (which I am sure was a no.1 hit worldwide) and the song they wrote together on Christmas. He loves to express himself through music, as he knows it can very well move somebody’s emotions. Pisces is a water sign, which can allow more dreamier, romantic and more soulful expressions worth capturing through the art of his lyrics and songs! He would communicate his love to MC in his songs, and through the romantic gestures that he does (like singing “I love you” in the Confession Date) it’s always fun when being in love for a Pisces Venus. Even though MC and Kiro may not have much time to spend together, they would always make the most out of it for those times they can.

Mars ♂︎ Mars is the go getter planet. Full of fire and passion, nothing would be done without it. It can give insights on how we can chase our goals and what our desires and our plans of attack are. Aggressive behaviour, lust and anger fall under this planet.

Kiro’s Mars is in Leo ♌︎ Mars in Leo individuals possess a strong need to create in some way, determined that their lives have not only meaning, but significant meaning. Passions run high, and so does desire as Leo is another fire sign in Kiro’s chart. Though they enjoy the pleasures of risk-taking, they generally have a strong sense of reason at the end of the day. Rarely will you find a person with Mars in this position who lives life without a true sense of a "calling”, as they have well-defined ambitions (like how Kiro’s Sun is in Aries). They act upon their heart, with their ego tied up with their actions, so that anything they do becomes a source of great pride and self-righteousness. Kiro always does things wholeheartedly, especially when it comes to MC. In the Prayer Date, MC’s plans following the superstitions of how the couples staying together forever kept getting ruined and thought them to be bad omens. He prepared a surprise for MC which he tried to keep a secret from her. Turns out, he was thinking the same way as her too. Kiro always speaks from the heart, because he was taught to that way.  “It’s because of you that I believe in stuff like this. I did it all because I want to be with you. Always.” -Prayer Date

Kiro’s Jupiter is in Sagittarius ♐︎ As a Sagittarius Jupiter, Kiro attracts the most good fortune when he is open-handed and generous, and practices what he preaches. These people can be inspirational, usually finding success in travel, education, teaching, sports, publishing, and foreign cultures. They can be philosophical, forward-looking, and enthusiastic to uphold their strong morals. Kiro’s Saturn is in Pisces ♓︎ Behind the scenes, these people like to live in solitude, in contemplation, preferring to work alone. They even may be suspicious of the intention of others and suspect that others' innocence or compassion is insincere. They may not even like showing or feeling any sense of vulnerability. However, if they don’t fully allow themselves to have these very human qualities, they ends up limiting himself. In the process, however, they subtly convey to others that they don’t need kindnesses, compliments, and support, and they could end up feeling quite alone. In time, as they recognise how they may limit themselves and their experiences, they learn to identify with the vulnerable, messy, or chaotic side of themselves step by step, slowly but surely.

Kiro is actually very sharp with his instincts and his alter-egos off screen. This helps him execute tasks however may be detrimental to himself or his relationship with MC (Stardust Date). They’re compelled to break through some of the inhibitions or taboos related to cooperating, connecting, and interacting. Despite the need for progress, they can be very stubborn and set in their ways in these areas. However, they believe in openness to new ideas and free thought. Aquarius Uranus have a strong interest in new technologies, the power of science, and the importance of communication.

He’s been doing a lot of the behind-the-scenes work to protect and change society for the better, and with his intelligence and leadership, he’s ready to make history in whatever persona he chooses to hold. 

Within three days, this orphanage that was built on the children’s blood and tears was destroyed, and all those involved were caught. Many large forums were discussing who hacker Key was, but no one could provide an answer. No one knew over ten years ago, and still no one knew now.

Neptune ♆ Neptune is the inspirational planet of dreams, inspirations, soulmates, enlightenment and sacrifice. It’s all about connection with the universe and the world around you, however can have the polar effect of deception and illusion, along with disappearances of sorts. It can also govern your music tastes and influence on how you can inspire others.

Kiro’s Neptune is in Capricorn ♑︎ These people are discerning, wise, and sensible. Their vision of an ideal world may centre around respect for rules, order, responsibility, and morality. Needing to believe in the realisability of their dreams means that their fantasies usually have a very realistic thread to them. Energy levels may not be high when they don’t believe in what they’re doing, and inspiration is not easy to find in the first place. However, they can turn a dream into reality more easily than most if they persevere as their visions are practical and also doable.

It shows us where we can change the world, alongside right where we can go into the abyss of the cunning and controlling energies of Pluto. Its powers can be ever so subtle, however it can have the forces to trash you with the realisations of what you need to let go in order to transform. Think of it as the “healing crisis” moments that you can thank Pluto for.

Kiro’s Pluto is in Sagittarius ♐︎ They take beliefs and philosophy of life very seriously, more than most. They believe deeply in personal freedom and expression. Uncovering the truth can be a mission. They may want to watch for a tendency to move from one cause to the next or one project to another, perhaps as a result of this dissatisfaction or from inhuman expectations. However, their faith in humanity is strong, and they are moved and motivated by the positive vision of a better world.

Kiro is able to cultivate his own unique beliefs on the world based on his Mentor’s teachings with the hardships that he faced, alongside his determination to protect MC. In depth gig review: ECM at 50: Jazz at Lincoln Center, Rose Theater, November 1, 2019

In 1969, the landscape of music was changing greatly-- Woodstock was a cultural force, the Beatles released Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the first Santana album ushered in  a sort of Latin, jazz-rock hybrid, and Americans were reacting strongly to the senselessness of the Vietnam war.  The culture was changing, Eastern religions became a fascination as were mind altering drugs  which helped Westerners gain new perspectives into the universe.  Jazz and improvised music as a whole were changing with the seismic shifts of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and Emergency by the Tony Williams Lifetime, which preceded the groundbreaking Davis recording by several months.  Jazz-rock, soulful Hammond organ based jazz, and free jazz had all carved their unique paths.  That same year, a new label out of Germany founded by a trained classical bassist named Manfred Eicher, who also had worked at Deutsche Grammophon made waves on the scene.  Edition of Contemporary Music, it's initials commonly mistaken for Eicher Creative Music, or European Classical Music, has arguably changed the face of boundary pushing music more than any other label over the past fifty years. ECM is known for a crystalline recording clarity, frequently found in classical music, a chamber music like focus, and a cinematic bent to albums, akin to film, one of Eicher's passions.

Contrary to popular belief, as journalist and ECM scholar John Kelman has noted, there is not really an “ECM sound”.   Critics of the label have frequently cited the heavy reverberant quality of many recordings as being distant and icy-- rather it would be more appropriate to say that while there are traits and a certain aesthetic that contributes to the label's recordings, there are plenty such as Jan Garbarek's Afric Pepperbird that have a very present immediacy with a fairly dry sound.  ECM helped establish through the recordings of Paul Bley, Chick Corea and especially Keith Jarrett, a new way of looking at solo piano, that has permanently changed the jazz landscape.  ECM brought attention to an entire generation of post Wes Montgomery guitar innovators: Ralph Towner, John Abercrombie, Terje Rypdal, a then relatively unknown prodigy from Lee's Summit Missouri with wild, shoulder length hair and a winning smile named Pat Metheny, sound sculpturist David Torn and Bill Frisell. The label also helped expand on an approach to ride cymbal playing that blended the intricacy of bebop, with a straight eighth note feel that allowed the rhythm to somehow swing and float simultaneously popularized by Norwegian Jon Christensen and Jack DeJohnette.  The label has also explored many cultures from Brazil, North Africa, and most recently Israel.  And last but not least, the label set a new precedent with album art the same way Blue Note, Impulse and CTI had.  Striking text only  or covers with evocative landscape photos with uniform fonts are art pieces in themselves. The sometimes startling 5 seconds of silence that begins each CD, demands that the listener pay close attention to the music within.

On November 1st at Jazz At Lincoln Center's Rose Theater, in the first of two days in New York City, ECM celebrated it's past, present and future.  The two and a half hour concert packed  a dizzying array of ECM and ECM associate artists that provided a concise snapshot of everything that has made the label enduring.  The evening's roster was studded with an impossible array of all stars and label newcomers: Egberto Gismonti, Ravi Coltrane, Larry Grenadier, Avishai Cohen, Enrico Rava, Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano, Shai Maestro, Nik Bartsch, Andrew Cyrille, Anja Lechner, Wadada Leo Smith, Meredith Monk, Vijay Iyer and  Jack DeJohnette among others.  Unlike some retrospective concerts which are quick summations of hits the musicians, allowed between one and three selections in specific configurations, used the pieces as launching pads for exploration, keeping with the label ethos.  There were some notable absences, Pat Metheny, Terje Rypdal, Manfred Eicher himself who could not make the trip, the recently retired Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, and Gary Peacock to name but a few who had such a major impact, but those who were there, more than made up for it.  

Egberto Gismonti, non pareil Brazilian pianist and guitarist who has been a major figure in Brazilian music and guitar, opened the concert on piano and seemingly fit an entire history of Brazilian music styles in relative brevity. Recent label signee, saxophone veteran Joe Lovano, pianist Marilyn Crispell, and drummer Carmen Castaldi who appeared on Trio Fascination earlier this year, gave a spirited rendition of “The Smiling Dog” that found Lovano's breathy, woody, impassioned tenor phrases framed by Crispell's tone clusters and jabs, Castaldi's spattering cymbals, rim clatters, and painterly snare and tom strokes building to a slow burn.  The elongated interpretation added considerably more heat than the version that appeared on the recording.  Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith built upon their fascinating and excellent duo album A Cosmic Rhythm Within Each Stroke by engaging in an enthralling duet blurring the line between new music and improvisation.  Iyer probed with  a variety of textures from acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes, grounded eighth note pulses freeing the legendary trumpeter, hunkered over in a near squat, bell in microphone to roam with signature legato lines, and carefully considered asides.  Smith straightened from his bent position, and stood stock still with his horn, making the silence count as much as the notes, as Iyer continued to mine abstract shapes and textures, returning from Rhodes to piano.  Smith reached for a golden Harmon mute on the floor, and utilized some amusing wah wah trumpet effects that traveled back to the earliest history of jazz trumpet through a thoroughly post modern prism.  

Bill Frisell and Thomas Morgan reprised Paul Motian's “It Happened A Long Time Ago”, Frisell's trademark neck bending of notes veered them off into space as his solo contained much thoughtful meditations.  Morgan's rich tone and backing brought to mind the sorely missed late Charlie Haden whose label contributions were immeasurable.  Wadada and legendary drummer Andrew Cyrille joined them on stage for two tracks from Cyrille's Declaration of Musical Independence, and besides Smith's sparkling trumpet, and an incredibly attuned Frisell, Cyrille showed exactly why he has been one of the most important figures in jazz with his unmistable ability to color and orchestrate on the drums as if the cymbals and drums were a large canvas.

Over the past few years, ECM has  had a huge Israeli contingent with important albums coming from Avishai Cohen, both in quartet and duo with pianist Yonathan Avishai.  Though the  duo just released the wonderful Playing The Room, the pair appeared as a quartet with bassist Barak Mori and drummer Ziv Ravitz, who replaced Nasheet Waits (playing later in the evening) for an aggressive, power packed “Shoot Me In The Leg”.  Cohen's composition  burst with the energy of New York jazz; it was the kind of performance that could only exist in the post Wynton Marsalis, Young Lions era.  Cohen played with whalloping energy and purpose, occasionally pointing the bell of his horn into the piano to add extra reverberation and resonant qualities.  Ravitz added further heat with well timed explosions.

As mentioned a bit earlier, ECM frequently draws the  line between new music and improvisation.  For those who may be curious reading this review unfamiliar with the term, new music refers to classical music composed by living, modern composers.  Though the pieces can be composed in styles such as romantic, baroque or classical styles, very often new music challenges listeners pushing at the boundaries of form, instrumentation or what music is.  Swiss pianist Nik Bartsch and his bands Ronin and Mobile specialize in a minimalist influenced form called ritual groove music.  Bartsch carries on a tradition of minimalism at ECM most famously espoused by Steve Reich and (to an extent) Meredith Monk,.  With Ronin or Mobile it is updated with grooves that attract newer listeners. There is a heavy African element to the intense, precise metronome like grooves, which change over time through the pianist's shouted verbal cues. Bartsch, coming to the stage dressed in all black, looking like a cross of a martial arts master with something out of The Matrix played a solo version for the first time of “Modul 5”. The concentrated performance  captured the essence of his main band, nothing was missing.  Craig Taborn also offered a spikier take on solo piano in the avant garde realm making for refreshing contrast.

Ravi Coltrane, Matthew Garrison and Jack DeJohnette took to the stage to close the concert's first half for a searing “Serpentine Fire”, the Earth, Wind and Fire classic the trio collective recorded on their 2016 In Movement. DeJohnette, who has been the most recorded drummer on ECM (first appearing with Keith Jarrett on Ruta And Daitya in 1971) has a synergy with Coltrane and Garrison that is magical.  They can  literally go anywhere with the level of trust and camaraderie, and they certain went everywhere on “Serpentine Fire”.  Garrison bolstered the lengthy rubato introduction with Hendrixian distorted bass, fuzzed out leads traipsing atop looped backgrounds set for himself.  DeJohnette, behind his slick camouflage finish Sonor kit, added a shower of well placed cymbal work, punctuating with loud crashes on his Sabian Encore model China, and crash cymbals.  His patented rumbling tom free falls adding a beautiful tension underneath Garrison and Coltrane's sopranino saxophone.  By the time the drummer entered into a groove, things moved from a slow burn to an ecstatic frenzy, DeJohnette engaging in his love of rock and funk with displaced brilliance, the tune brought Rose Theater to it's feet.

In the second half, Ethan Iverson and Mark Turner  explored more of their chamber duo camaraderie found on Temporary Kings with Iverson proudly displaying his ECM shirt to the audience at tune's end.  By far, as excellent as all the music was, the most touching of the music all evening was Meredith Monk's rendition of “Gotham Lullaby” first heard on her masterpiece Dolmen Music, her ECM debut from 1980. As a vocalist, performance artist, and new music composer, the soon to be 77 year old Monk is singular and has influenced a legion of vocalists who employ extended technique, including Bjork, and label mate Theo Bleckmann, a Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble alumnus that appeared on two recordings.  The poignancy of “Gotham Lullaby” was made all the more poignant when she dedicated the piece to the healing of the earth and when one considers the context of the piece. Understanding the context of Monk's pieces can greatly aid in appreciation and sparking the listeners imagination for their own mental images.  The piece was originally written in 1979 for a stage adaptation of Fear and Loathing adapted by long time collaborator, Ping Chong titled Fear and Loathing in Gotham.  Chong, one of the most important and influential figures in interdisciplinary performance, and one of the leaders in providing a forum for Asian American artists, based the non narrative play on a white officer tracking down an Asian serial killer.   Though Monk has since revised some of the wordless syllables that appeared on the original recording, the warmth of her rich alto range had lost none of it's emotive power.  Knowing the theme of the original play, her wild, intense, frightened ululations were even more chilling. Besides Anja Lechner, she represented the ECM New Series side of the label, focusing on groundbreaking works of classical and new music.  

Ravi Coltrane returned to the stage donning tenor saxophone with Ralph Alessi on trumpet, Andy Milne on piano, Drew Gress on bass and Mark Ferber on drums for “Iram Issala” from Alessi's Imaginary Friends.  This is a great quintet, and the rapport Alessi and Coltrane have dates to the latter's lone Blue Note recording Spirit Fiction in 2012 where the trumpeter appeared on several numbers.  Their soaring perfect fourth based line at the end of the piece was magisterial as they became one.  The piece shifted through several moods during the solos, and by the time they reached the unison phrase it was purely cathartic.  To finish the evening, Joe Lovano returned with Enrico Rava who had flown in from Italy with pianist Giovanni Guidi, and the group was completed by Dezron Douglas, one of New York's bass A listers, and Nasheet Waits on drums.  The band looked at “Interiors” and Lovano's “Fort Worth” heard on their dynamic new album Roma.  Waits, who replaced Gerald Cleaver for the concert was a marvel on the hard swinging Ornette Coleman inspired Lovano composition.  Rava brought a very interesting texture on flugelhorn, much different than Tom Harrell, who recorded an earlier version of the tune on Quartets: Live At The Village Vanguard  in 1996.  Rava and Lovano were quite playful in collective dialogue, and Waits unbreakable strength ride beat spurred them on.  Giovanni Guidi as he does on Roma revealed himself as an improviser of remarkable depth, as the two pieces tapped into a blusier, hard swinging side of his musical personality.  His Avec Les Temps from earlier this year showed a richer compositional voice and orchestrative acumen with tenor saxophone and guitar added to the ensemble.

With it's 50th Anniversary gala, ECM provided something of a rarity in the modern concert era.  Very rarely do people get to see so many of the label's legends and stars in such a carefully organized event. ECM had presented festival nights as did CTI and Blue Note in the 70's, but a label concert package today is not often found. The November 1 concert was truly special.  ECM showed just how enduring of a cultural institution it is, and how focused it is on bringing public attention to great musicians today.  The label modus operandi, though it has released some fantastic archival releases and presented long out of print titles in high resolution digital for streaming, is mainly concentrated on the present.  Manfred Eicher,  as label founder, producer and visionary keeps moving forward providing an embarrassment of consistently excellent music. The ECM at 50 celebration was a way to honor the past, and present of a juggernaut in recorded music.

Leo Rising: Wearing the Mask of the King

One of the problems with archetypes is that they tend to get lost in time without anyone realizing it. The Warrior looks like a knight in shining armor long after the invention of machine guns. The Hermit looks like Gandalf, and so we forget to associate the archetype with John Muir and Thoreau. Another archetype that hasn’t updated well to the modern world is the King.

I would argue there are very few (if any) actual kings in the world anymore. Heads of state can get along quite well without channeling the King once in their entire careers. Even the monarchs that have kept their thrones and stay in the public eye no longer channel the King these days, as much as I like following the news about a certain royal family. With no royalty channeling the King, the archetype of the King has gotten lost in costume dramas that forget what kingship is more with each passing year.

This creates a problem for people who have a strong Leo in their birth charts. One of Leo’s archetypes is the King. There used to be a strong connection between Leo and royalty. Astrologers would gun for a strong Leo in their monarchs. Today, that idea would be laughable. Without a strong model to follow, the classic astrological formulas for Leo have fallen into the same stereotypes as kings: pompous, self-aggrandizing, attention-seeking, people-pleasing, and ultimately insecure. This is not what the King is, and it is not what Leo is supposed to be. Some would claim that we no longer live in a world of kings, and the King should be thrown away. I think this archetype gets at something essential. It’s probably due for a rebranding (hopefully, a gender-neutral one!), but getting rid of what the King represents would be a loss for everyone.

Fortunately, there are clues to what the King should be buried like fossils in the birth chart and in ancient texts from the age of kings.

The King That Was

In order to figure out what the King is, we need to start with what we know about the King from ancient times. My focus is going to be particularly on the Norse/Germanic model of kingship because that’s what I know, but the values of those societies are shared in other places as well. (See also: The Gift by Lewis Hyde.)

In modern times, we usually think of a king as someone who takes. The king wears the finest clothes and unspeakable wealth and eats the finest cuts of meat. This may have been true in the past, but how much a king took wasn’t what said “kingship” to people in the past. Diana Paxson explores the nature of kingship in Taking up the Runes. She say, “A standard epithet for a king in early English poetry is ‘ring-giver,’ and it is the generosity of a lord to his followers that earns his devotion.” It was dragons in the lore who hoarded wealth. Good kings gave it away. Generosity was a sign of power, and it was also a virtue. “It provided social lubrication; it was a way of recycling, the expression of ‘what goes around comes around’” (Paxson).

So, if we are going to look for the King in Leo. We need to start by looking for generosity.

The King Rising

Looking at all of the ways Leo can appear strongly in a birth chart would take too long, and this post is shaping up to be long as it is. I will focus on the Leo ascendant and its relationship with the earth signs. Another name for the King is the “earthly ruler,” after all. If you have a strong Leo in other houses, stick with me. What I have to say still applies to you.

One of the underexplored aspects of astrology are the patterns that arise when the relationships between the houses and signs are considered for different rising signs. I suspect the reason for this is that the whole sign house system has largely fallen out of favor. In Placidus, there is no way of knowing what house someone’s Virgo is going to be in, even if you know they have Leo rising. In whole sign houses, if Leo is rising, Virgo is always in the second house.

What does it say that Virgo is in the House of Money for someone with Leo rising? What does it say that Capricorn is in the House of Servants? That Taurus is in the House of Career? I would argue that it says quite a lot.

With Virgo in the second house, service and money are inextricably tied together. Virgo’s virtue is also perfection. In the second house, this means that Virgo’s drive to do better and better is directed toward money. Virgo is the sign of the servant, which means that someone with Virgo in the second house uses money to serve others. In the age of kings, a king that was generous but had nothing to give wasn’t filling the King’s social role. The King was obligated to lead the community in a lifestyle that meant they all prospered. For someone with Leo rising/Virgo in the second house, embodying this aspect of the King might take the form of becoming a wealthy philanthropist, or learning to be good at living on very little so that there is enough time to volunteer at a nursing home, or dedicating a lot of time and energy to perfecting a skill that is then given away to the community.

Following the earth signs around the wheel, we come to Capricorn in the sixth house. Steven Forrest says in The Inner Sky that Capricorn is “the marriage of one’s nature and one’s public identity.” The sixth house is associated with Virgo, and once again we come to the idea of service. Traditionally, the sixth house told you something about your servants. The King is theoretically charismatic figurehead leader who usually needs a prime minister behind the scenes to deal with the unglamorous paperwork and number crunching. Capricorn is the sign of the Prime Minister, so having Capricorn in the House of Servants suits Leo nicely.

Given what we already know about Virgo and the second house, I would argue for a different interpretation of Capricorn in the sixth house. One of my nicknames for the sixth house is the House of Day Jobs. This means that the sixth house tells us something about the day job of the King. In this view, it is the job of the King to do the work of the Prime Minister. No handing the job off to a schmuck who does all the work while you get the glory. A person who participates in the archetype of the King has the Capricorn-ish ability to develop the skill to make the trains run on time, and they use this ability in service to the community.

Looking at the last earth sign, we come to Taurus in the tenth house. The tenth house is called the House of Career traditionally. Since most of us think of our sixth house day jobs as our careers, the difference between the tenth house and the sixth house needs some explaining. The sixth house is what you do to be of service. It’s often the thing people pay you money for. The tenth house is the thing you feel called to do, the role you feel called to play in the community. Often, this is unpaid. A person might really strongly identify with their political party, or they might be an artist who needs to sell lattes to survive.

For someone with Taurus in the tenth house, that mission is tied to Taurean things. Taurus is associated with the second house. (Do you see the pattern between the houses and signs?) We’re coming again to the idea of money, but Taurus builds on that. Taurus is not just about accumulating resources. That stereotype is a way the archetype has been twisted. Taurus is about developing inner security. Outer security can contribute to a sense of inner security, but we can all name people who have a lot of material resources and are deeply insecure.

This means that for someone embodying the King with Leo rising, the thing they are called to embody for the community is a sense of security. Once again, we return to the king as ‘ring-giver,” but there is more to it than that. The King develops inner security and then leads others in developing that security for themselves. There were dim embers of this dying flame still burning in the early days of the French Revolution. Despite the decadence at court, the peasants in the countryside had a deep faith in the king. They believed that the famines and high taxes were caused by the king’s greedy advisors. “If only the king knew about this,” they said. “He would fix everything.” The idea of the King gave the peasants such a deep sense of security that they were willing to ignore real poverty for years before they revolted.

The King That Is

The picture I’ve painted of the King couldn’t be further from the stereotypes that surround Leo. The King is generous. Leo is a spendthrift. The King’s security is contagious. Leo is deeply insecure. The King serves. Leo is served.

It would be easy at this point to sound like Great Aunt Gertrude and complain about kids these days not learning manners, but I would argue that the vices of Leo are created by the fact that it is difficult to find a place in society to express Leo in a healthy way.

The deep security that allows a tenth house Taurus to represent inner security for others comes from the firm foundation created by the second house Virgo and sixth house Capricorn. Look at a chart with Leo rising, and you’ll see that the earth signs create a triangle with the base at the bottom of the chart, parallel the horizon. The triangle is the most solid, secure shape. Service is the foundation of the triangle that creates the strength necessary for that deep sense of security to rise to the heights. Service isn’t just about clocking hours, though. It’s about the deep knowledge that you have something to give.

Believing that you have something to give is the height of arrogance in my society. People who win awards are expected to not just acknowledge the people who supported them. They’re expected to say, “Well, it wasn’t really me that did this. It was really all of these other people.” This is supposed to make up for centuries of the rich and powerful getting the credit for the work of armies of invisible peasants, but this doesn’t really solve the power problem, and it creates a terrible situation for Leo.

It is often said that narcissists (one of the potential shadow faces of Leo) feel insecure because they feel like Nobody, and they need the constant reflection of themselves from other people to reassure them that they exist. (This is called narcissistic supply.) Leo falls into pit of feeling like Nobody when it thinks it has nothing to give. Whatever sign the sun is in, a person with Leo rising finds the foundation of their identity in generosity. They feel like themselves when they’re giving things away. The more valuable their gifts, the more valuable they feel. When a Leo is pressured to believe that having something to give is the height of arrogance, they they don’t become humble. They fall into narcissism or low-self esteem.

The King That Will Be

So, what do you do if you have a strong Leo in a world that doesn’t understand the King?

There’s a saying in the evolutionary astrology circles that the cure for a dysfunctional sign is in the sign that comes after it in the zodiac wheel and the sign opposite it.

We’ve already explored the importance of Virgo for Leo. A healthy Leo needs to engage in acts of service. It needs to perfect its service and really shine it up until it feels like it has something to offer. If you don’t have a strong Virgo in your chart, you might have a hard time with Virgo’s discernment skills. Virgo doesn’t just need to feel helpful. It needs to be helpful, and all of that grounded, pragmatic earth energy helps it tell the difference between the two. If you don’t have a lot of that, don’t beat yourself up if you find out later that you were halping more than helping.

Investing in service is only part of the cure for Leo’s ills. The ability to be of service and not fall on the false modesty that would require you to dismiss what you’ve done requires courage, and that courage comes from taking a page out of Aquarius’s book. Aquarius doesn’t need to work at not giving a shit about what other people think. That attitude comes naturally Aquarius, and it’s medicine for Leo.

Leos are often told not to be so arrogant. There is one area where it is essential for Leo to ignore this advice: Being proud of being generous.

Encouraging Leo to feel pride might sound like encouraging narcissism, but it isn’t. The “pride” that causes Leo to search for narcissistic supply is so dangerous because it’s like living on cheetos for Leo. Narcissistic supply “reassures” Leo that they’re valuable in vague ways, but it doesn’t actually give the sense of self-worth the Leo is seeking. It doesn’t allow them to see the ways they’re being generous and creating security for others, which is the core of their identity.

The pride that comes from being of service is a vitamin that Leo needs. Without seeing evidence of doing good in the world, Leo feels invisible. In a normally functioning society, gratitude is the natural reward for giving. Gratitude holds up a mirror and shows a genuinely positive image of the person who gives. Society is becoming more aware of the need to represent all kinds of people in art and the media. When society enforces false modesty, it creates a similar problem. Acts of generosity and service become invisible, along with the person who did them. When those acts of service are at the core of your identity, the withholding of gratitude and the invisibility that comes with it saps your sense of self-worth. It creates the sense that “no matter what I give, it isn’t enough,” and the desperately starving Leo turns to narcissistic snack food to get their needs met.

If society isn’t going to provide that mirror, Leo is going to have to provide it for themselves. Some people have a practice of writing down all of the things they’re grateful for every day. For Leo, it would actually be more useful to turn that practice on its head. Every night, make a list of the things you did to help other people, the ways in which you were of service, the way you made people’s lives better for being around. You will know this exercise is working because you will feel like a plant in the sun, as if you can live on the glow you get thinking about the way you’ve made people’s lives better. That feeling is as far from narcissism as Earth is from the sun.

How to Make Games: Gacha Games

Hey, do you wanna make more money than several member nations of the EU?! I know I sure did, so when I was 12 my sister and I set up a lemonade stand that made several times the value of Greece's GDP when you consider that negatives cancel each other out. Hey, do you want to make MEANINGFUL amounts of money and have zero moral compunctions that might inhibit your success even though the road to the top is steep and lined with unethical business practices? Well, just insert $29.99 (397.48 Canadian dollars) and I'll teach you how to make some fuckin' gacha games! Gacha games, games inspired by a terrifying Japanese tradition known as "Seppuku" where you shoot pinballs in order to undress a girl carrying a bowl of ramen - before I go any further I feel that my understanding of Japanese culture may be a little out of date, so apologies where necessary - and something else happens, blah, blah, blah, and you get some toys or some shit. When it was discovered that Android and iOS can be programmed in such a simple and fast way that typewriters and some house plants with high RAM amounts can run the code, the market soon became flooded, but not saturated, with gacha games. Why hasn't the market hit saturation point despite the fact I can't scroll further than a gnat's dick in winter's length on the Google Play Store without hitting one? Because, as the wise Chinese philanderer, Aristotle, posited, "The difference in hardcore pr0n and gacha is a string bikini and $39.99 USD, but the amount of shame is equal in both," So, the games are retardedly easy to code and the only decision you'll spend one afternoon making is if you want to spend 2 hours making it a fully-automated RPG, 5 hours to make it a complex battler with some meaningful gimmicks, or 15 minutes copying Puzzles & Dragons. These options have totally not been done to death, so feel no worry if you can't be arsed to innovate. Once you have done the easy part, the next part is to locate someone with artistic talent and ask them to draw girls. Lots and lots of girls. Unlike H-games, the theme here can be as broad or narrow or as obtuse as you want. In fact, you can use multiple themes or just do what most of these games do and just steal from history and myth and make them all girls! It literally doesn't matter how deep or nuanced your story or gameplay are if the 2D waifus are cute enough. Lots of girls are necessary - tall girls, short girls, thicc girls, lean girls, brown girls, bunny girls... just don't stop making girls. Ever. You'll be expected to actually update about every two weeks or so, but that's getting ahead of ourselves. Lastly, for each summoning banner, place four characters on them in varied, dynamic poses and outfits in the ratio of 3 girls and 1 guy. "Guys?" I hear you ask incredulously. Yes, I recently read a very scientific study that said girls sometimes use the internet now and, so, to compensate for this possible oversight, each banner needs one shirtless guy, but unlike girls, never vary their body types. Just watch a few Marvel movies for their shirtless stud scenes and copy that - that's all you'll have to do! And sometimes give them different hats, so they know they're different guys. What? Sound design? Pffft. Don't be ridiculous. Everyone's going to be playing this game at their jobs when they can't play their real game libraries, so they're just going to mute them. Those that don't will be the creepy weirdos just listening to their waifu of choice's voice actress anyway. Besides, Wendee Lee is gonna do 85% of the voices anyway. You can just skip this part. The core of any gacha game, as it was foretold in the Japanese romcom, The Art of War & Peace, by Leo Toystore, is their summoning mechanic. You need some kind of in-game currency to exchange in order to summon heroes to make up your party. Sure, you'll give the players some generic filler heroes, but they'll all be bottom-tier and Worst Waifus(TM) with no real potential for growth, but that way no one can call foul on your game design. The real draw will be summoning, so make your orbs or your gems or whatever, just be sure that they're artificially inflated like nations that no longer rely on the gold and silver standards, because just like those nations that no longer rely on the gold and silver standards your imaginary currency is backed by fucking nothing other than your insistence that, yes, 300 platinum gems totally costs $49.99, stop asking so many questions! The second-most pivotal point is that your exchange between currencies and summons is completely irrational. Anything from 5 to 150 is acceptable, just so long as it's never, ever 1:1. That would make it easy for your fans to deduce the true value of your currencies and that's literally the last thing you want. You can set aside special vouchers for people who acquire enough "Good Boy Points" by making the game a habit rather than a game in the requisite "Daily Login Bonus" category. But those are entirely secondary and should still have the same low, low rates of drawing heroes anyone gives a shit about. About once a year you can hand them 5-Star Summon Vouchers, if they have enough Good Boy Points and throw them a bone to keep them in the dopamine loop. So, once the game is on market, just rotate your banners every two weeks, usually in the pattern of "Useless, Fanservicey" Banner twice, then "Mechanically Powerful Characters" Banner once, then repeat. That way players are inclined to waste their currencies on bathing suit beauties or Valentine's Day honeys instead of the St. Patrick's Day themed Hero who has S Ranks in Strength and Defense. This will incentivize players to routinely pay up like the good little whales they're meant to be. Err, I mean... it will encourage players to contribute to your work economy, so your studio can keep the lights on... like the good little whales they're meant to be! There we go, much better. Now just slap on a campaign mode and a crap-ton of side missions - preferably one or more for each hero you make in order to pad out the game length - and then slap a Stamina Bar on top of that! Make sure they can't do more than 10 missions in a day's time at the highest possible levels, so they don't blast through your paper-thin experience and keep ponying up properly. This will also tie back into the "make the game a habit" goal we talked about earlier. Once you have enough starving artists ball-n-chained to their writer desks churning out waifus, that's pretty much it! You have a sustainable game in the same way a drug cartel overlord does! Now make another following the above and enjoy double the money, ad infinitum! Also, one last bit of writing advice: never actually finish the story. Just keep adding new 'twists' and 'complications' no matter how hackneyed they may be! If they're getting bi-weekly banners, they aren't complaining that the story only updates every financial quarter when the investors start asking questions! Bonus points for making your characters aware of the events as they come and go and reference past banners - this will add the illusion of depth to your writing and characters. Congrats! You're contributing to the blight on the Earth's surface known as cell phone games. When the aliens find us and we try to rationalize all the good we've done, yours will be one among many sins that cause us to get vaporized to make way for a cosmic-scale McDonalds. But, hey, you can't take all that shit-ton of money you'll make with you when you go anyway. You're welcome.

Law enforcement investigations and public opinion in the information age

“There’s a much bigger story here that we aren’t being told.”

The above quote is part of a tweet written by a semi-well-known conservative blogger about the information, and lack of information surrounding the 2017 Las Vegas shooting that’s available to the public.

The blogger has implied, through blog posts and social media posts, that information is being withheld from the public for nefarious reasons. I’m here to say, though, that there are likely good reasons why we don’t have all the information yet.

I’m not, and never have been, a law enforcement officer. However in my nearly five years working in journalism, I’ve had the opportunity to interview officers in just about every area of law enforcement - from police, to sheriff’s deputies, to highway patrol troopers, to bailiffs, to jailers and more. I’ve talked to LEOs about specific crimes, criminal investigations, and the nature of their jobs. It was eye-opening. This isn’t to say that I now agree with every single law enforcement officer ‘s actions 100 percent of the time - I don’t. But I feel like my position as a police and fire reporter helped me understand why police do certain things a certain way; and that understanding has helped me to be a better informed journalist AND citizen.

The news cycle has changed drastically in the recent past. No longer do we get our news from a weekly, 10-minute broadcast played in a theater; or watch a daily, 15-minute report. The news cycle is 24 hours. There are several outlets choose from, all of which compete with each other for viewers and readers.

Consumers of media today are used to instant gratification. If something happens, people want the who, what, when, where and why immediately. They want updates as the action happens.

That’s partly why delivering news via social media has taken off - Updates can be delivered quickly in a simple tweet.

The thing is, the timelines of the news cycle and of criminal investigations don’t always sync up. In fact, they rarely do.

I believe the immediacy of the news cycle, abundance of information available to us at all times, and shows like Law and Order in which a crime is solved within an hour are all factors that contribute to members of the public not wanting to wait for information about a criminal investigation.

On Oct. 1, 2017, 58 people were shot and killed while attending a concert on the Las Vegas strip. Hundreds were injured, either from gunshots or being trampled in the panic that ensued. The gunman, who was shooting from his suite on the 32nd room of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, eventually killed himself.

The facts available in this case are mind-boggling. Very little is known about the background of the shooter. He was well-off. He had no known ties to terrorist organizations. No one in his life who has spoken to the media can fathom why he did this. Somehow, the shooter managed to stockpile an arsenal of 24 firearms in his hotel room in the days leading up to the shooting.

To this day, it’s unclear why and how the shooter managed to pull all of this off.

The shooting is maddening and sickening. The fact that there are so many unknowns only adds to the frustration.

People want answers to the scores of questions that accompany this tragedy. That’s perfectly reasonable. They’re questions we should be asking and should be trying to answer.

However, what’s not reasonable is expecting law enforcement to immediately divulge every detail of their investigation to the public.

The conservative blogger I quoted at the beginning of this post is flipping tables over the fact that so many questions are unanswered. Why have no surveillance camera images of the shooter been released? How did one guy manage to do so much damage? How did no one notice he was hoarding guns in his hotel room?

Fact: Every detail of a criminal investigation cannot be revealed to the public while the investigation is ongoing. Details that only the shooter, or those working closely with the shooter, would know should absolutely not be spread in order to increase the chances of identifying those who may have been involved. (And investigators have hinted that they don’t believe the shooter acted alone.) Furthermore, releasing too much information may taint the jury pool of any potential future trial. So there are actually really good reasons for not revealing too much information.

Fact. Some crimes take years to solve. Consider the disappearance of Tara Grinstead. Her case remained cold for 12 years, until just last year someone came forward with information that led to two arrests. (I’d wager that the woman who came forward, who was the girlfriend of one of the suspects, probably knew some information about the crime that hadn’t been released to the public, thus making her tip more credible). There’s also the disappearance of the Lyon sisters - This case took 42 years to solve. The Phoenix freeway shootings from 2015 still haven’t been solved. I know these incidents aren’t exactly the same as the Las Vegas shooting; but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that it may take longer than a few months to solve a mass shooting - especially the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history. It could take years or even decades before the case is closed.

Fact. Many crimes don’t have a sensible explanation. “None of this makes any sense.” This is one statement from the blogger I agree with. The crime makes no sense. And the sad thing is, many crimes don’t. Often, the most heinous of crimes are committed for no other reason than human depravity.

It’s normal to want to find a reason for a terrible event. But sometimes the explanation is as simple as this - people can be evil.

Also, more information has been released than you may realize. For example, this 81-page preliminary investigative report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is available in its entirety online. It details police’s findings, has diagrams and several pictures of evidence.

And while the blogger keeps saying that the shooting “isn’t getting any coverage,” a simple Google search proves otherwise - CNN reported just yesterday the results of the shooter’s autopsy.

The Las Vegas Review Journal has actually had great, thorough coverage of the shooting. Editor-in-chief Keith Moyer had an awesome clap-back tweet to the blogger:

(Yes, I took out the blogger’s Twitter handle because he’s obnoxious and doesn’t need more attention/traffic to his site. But a quick Google search will tell you who he is.)

I hope we get every answer to our unanswered questions about this horrific shooting - to give closure to those affected and to better understand how to prevent something like this from happening again. But don’t automatically cry “conspiracy” if we don’t get our answers right away.

As much as Jemma wanted to enjoy her first week at Uni, for the most part it’s been profoundly boring. By Friday, she’s finished the reading and assignments for the next two weeks, even started on projects that haven’t been assigned yet. There’s only one class where she actually learns a few things the first week: physical chemistry. Relatively speaking, it’s always been one of her weak points. 

The non-science, general education requirements on her schedule this semester have got to be the worst: world history and psychology. Two subjects that, admittedly, she hadn’t taken courses or AP exams for during her high school/community college years, too busy filling out her schedule with as many biology and biochemistry courses as she could. But in retrospect, she really should have gotten some of these out of the way early. The subject matter mostly feels like common knowledge. She’s learned everything they’ve covered so far just by visiting a couple of museums, watching the occasional documentary on National Geographic, and having bloody common sense.

Still, the most boring course of all has got to be general chemistry. Now there’s a class where the syllabus contains nothing she hasn’t learned already. But the university simply wouldn’t let her transfer those particular credits from community college. What a waste.

She’s hoping her major-specific courses will pick up a bit as the semester goes on: microbiology and genetics. In fact, she’s confident they will; it just happens that the first week entails a substantial amount of review of basic biological concepts.

More than anything else about attending university, she was looking forward to the labs: a chance to apply some of the skills she’s acquired. As it’s uncommon to let prepubescent children play with caustics or BSL-II microbes, there haven’t been many appropriate settings to practice her laboratory skills. It was always her favourite part of her community college courses, so she’s positive that the absence of labs during the first week of class is contributing to her sense of disappointment.

So, going into the second week when the lab portions of her courses will finally be meeting, her hopes are still high.

Her first one of the week is Gen Chem, Tuesday afternoon. Though it’s the least stimulating science course by far, she walks into the chemistry building with purpose and optimism. Though it’s unlikely any of the concepts will be new to her, perhaps she can learn a new laboratory technique or two.

She’s the first person into the lab, aside from the TA, and she takes a seat near the front of the room, against the wall, ready to tackle whatever protocol they throw at her.

But when turns to the page in the lab manual that’s written on the whiteboard, it takes everything in her not to sigh.

Still, the lab portion of the course is not optional. She pulls out one of several fresh lab notebooks from her backpack, designates it with a label for CHEM100A, and starts writing out the title, objective, and methods anyway.

The rest of the students in the section slowly trickle in as it gets closer to the class start time, and Jemma grows increasingly anxious as they all pair up with one another without hesitation. Roommates, met at orientation, knew each other in high school: whatever the backstory between the pairs may be, they all seem to already know each other. Jemma should have expected as much. Being a minor, she’s not allowed to have a roommate, but even if it weren’t against university rules, who would want to room with a teenager? And, in the same vein, who would want to have one as a lab partner? None of them know her, or the fact that she’s nothing like a typical sixteen-year-old.

She finds herself torn. On one hand, she hoping there’s an odd number of students in the class, because she’ll probably finish the experiment faster on her own. But on the other, she sort of hopes it’s an even number. Even if she has to spend all three hours in here with a chemistry amateur, perhaps she can make a friend. That’s one thing she desperately needs.

But the minute hand on the clock ticks to two, and the TA leading the lab starts his introductory spiel on laboratory safety before anyone takes the empty stool next to hers. She supposes it’s for the best.

As the TA – Jason, his name is – rambles on, Jemma’s thoughts take a turn for the worse. What if he notices she’s alone, and decides to rope her into another established group of two, turning her into the world’s worst third wheel? (Well, chemistry-wise, she’d probably get all of the work done, but socially speaking, a third wheel.)

But at eight minutes past, before she can dread such a possibility any longer, an out of sight door swings open, and someone comes stumbling in.

With all the shelves and ventilation shafts above the benches, she can’t properly see them, can only vaguely see a figure and hear their shuffling feet and panting breaths, as though they’ve been running. She wonders whether there’s an unpaired student across the lab after all, an empty seat out of her sight that the late stranger will occupy.

But the mystery person circles around to the front of the lab, heading straight for the TA in his search for an empty stool. He’s a pasty-looking bloke with short, curly hair, a striped tie in glaring contrast to the chequered shirt tucked into his kahki trousers. His fair cheeks are flushed pink, and he’s quite out of breath, presumably from running here. He looks so… young. Like he should still be in high school.

What sort of college student runs to class?

“I just finished explaining to the rest of the class,” Jason addresses the late boy. “Being more than five minutes late to a lab means you can’t participate in that lab, and you’ll have to take a zero. You’re all right for today. But starting next week, be on time or don’t come at all.”

“Yes, sir,” the boy responds, barely audible to her. She thinks she sees him roll his eyes.

“Anyone missing a partner?” Jason raises his voice, addressing the entire lab, and Jemma’s stomach sinks.

The boy pauses at the front of the lab, glancing around. Oh, brother. Like Jason hasn’t already seen her sitting by herself? Must he draw the entire section’s attention to the fact that she has no friends?

Holding her breath, she tentatively raises her hand, only just next to her face. Hoping that at least the students on the other end of the lab won’t see her, or have this introductory memory of her. The boy takes a deep breath as though he’s disappointed, and ducks his head as he hurries to the empty stool beside her.

“Excellent,” the professor exclaims. “The two young geniuses get to work together. This’ll be interesting.”

Huh? ‘Two young geniuses?’ Is he her age, after all?

Her gut instinct is to be excited. Someone else her age might be nice, an opportunity to make a friend. But right now, she can’t seem to maintain any level of excitement about the boy now approaching her. He clearly doesn’t have the same priorities. Late to the first laboratory? Rolling his eyes like he’s too good to be here? She doesn’t need a smart arse.

He slumps onto his seat, dropping his backpack so loudly it drowns out a couple of Jason’s next words. Not that it matters; she’s already written down the entire protocol and she’s well aware of both OSHA and university laboratory safety guidelines, thanks very much.

The irresponsible mystery boy rushes to catch up, scrambling to put on his coat and gloves, and pulling out a notebook and pen, scribbling down the protocol in chicken scratch. She looks away, realizing she shouldn’t care what his handwriting looks like.

It’s only a couple more minutes before Jason gives them permission to begin, and Jemma sighs while the rest of the students hastily rise to collect their materials. Her partner isn’t quite ready yet.

She supposes she should give him a second chance, though. He could have an excellent reason for being late, aside from laziness. A car accident, a sick grandfather. She should give him the benefit of the doubt. After all, she’s stuck with him for sixteen weeks now.

“I’m Jemma,” she offers with a smile. “Simmons,” she adds. Pausing his mad scribbling, he glances over at her in surprise.

“Leo,” he replies. Putting far less effort into his returning smile, he turns back to his notebook. “Fitz,” he adds.

“Right then, Leo,” she says, not caring if he’s finished or not. No time to waste. “I’ll get the reagents. You can get the other supplies.” She heads for the table at the opposite corner of the room where their reagents have been pre-prepared without giving him time to respond.  

It’s one of the hardest things she’s ever done, watching these technically-adults try to use the safety pump on the nitric acid. She barely stops one of them from using the same pipet for sodium hydroxide as sulphuric acid, and another from diluting their acid solution by adding water to it. “Acid to water, never water to acid!” she can’t help but shout, and it captures the attention of the roaming TA. As Jason approaches to give the hapless student a repeat lecture on safe practices for corrosives, Jemma seizes her window to access the reagent bottles she needs.

When she returns to the other end of the room, Leo already has a pre-1982 penny, a hot plate, a crucible, and extra glassware set up in their fume hood. She’s not sure how he found everything so quickly. He missed the walkthrough of where each of the items were located in the lab.

“Found everything all right, then?” she asks.

“Hard to misplace a hot plate,” he quips.

Oh. He’s Scottish, then.

In an instant, she finds her heart softening to him a bit. It was not easy transferring here during high school, and she can’t help but wonder whether he just moved here. His accent seems unmistakeable now. She doesn’t know how she didn’t notice it before. Not expecting it, she supposes. She can’t remember ever meeting a Scottish person since she moved to America. Assuming he was American, she thought he just had an unusual pronunciation of his name. But glancing over at his now-closed notebook resting on the lip of the hood, she sees ‘Leo Fitz’ and finds herself thinking it’s a bit cute. Fitz.

Her curiosity gets the better of her.

“Not from around here, I’m guessing?” she asks as she places the penny in one of the beakers he got.

“Glasgow,” he answers, pouring the correct volume reagent into the beaker without being prompted, with neither a splash nor a dribble.

“Sheffield,” she volunteers, spirits lifted that so far he’s not completely incompetent at chemistry.

He’s not terribly talkative yet, and she’s not sure whether to chalk it up to nerves or an ego. But she can’t help trying to engaging him a little more; it’d be so nice to have a friend her age.

“What’s your opinion of America so far?” she ventures as they watch their penny dissolve.

“Lives up to the stereotypes.”

She chuckles. She could say the same thing.

Still, it’s not the detailed answer she’d hoped for. There’s got to be some way to get this boy to talk, but she’s not sure how to find it out. She surreptitiously looks to his backpack and the lanyard sitting at his station, but they’re both utterly plain and black, no stickers or themes to be found. She’s starting to second guess whether she wants to be friends with him at all.

To her surprise, after the following step, he asks her a question.

“When’d you move here?”

“About three years ago, now.”

“Hmm. Me too.” As though it’s a trivial thing, immigrating to a new country.

“Though we didn’t move here, specifically to New Jersey, I mean,” she qualifies. “My parents are in Los Angeles.”

“Ah,” Fitz nods. “Yeah, my... my mum, she’s in New York.”

“How old are you?” she asks, since the can of worms has been opened now.

“Sixteen,” he says, shrugging just slightly like he’s a bit proud of himself.

“Seriously?” she asks, not able to help herself from beaming at him a bit.

“Seriously.” He nods.

“I am too,” she says. “Couldn’t stand another day of high school,” she adds.

He chuckles a bit, at that. And though she doesn’t understand why, Jemma finds herself quite happy she’s at least capable of making him laugh.

They’re both quiet as they carry on the next step of the experiment. Jemma is more impressed by the minute at Fitz’s knack for chemistry. She doesn’t know if she could’ve asked for a better partner. Despite being late and having hardly any time to read the manual, he seems to have memorized the protocol. He helps her setup each new step before she has to ask.

“What’s your major?” she asks, trying to sound as casual as possible, if only because she doesn’t want to seem desperate for someone to talk to.

“Engineering.”

Of course. A numbers bloke. It’s all math and physics to them, it’s no wonder he can barely hold a conversation.

“Biochem,” she counters, without prompting.

Despite their mismatched fields of study, they work surprisingly well together. Still, worried they may not have much curriculum in common outside this wretched lab, she narrows her inquiries into ones strictly related to it.

“When are Dr. White’s office hours, again?” she asks. Just to get the ball rolling.

“Er… I dunno,” he responds, looking at her like she’s mad for asking. “Isn’t that in the syllabus?”

She tries a different avenue a few minutes later.

“Have you done the textbook readings yet?” He probably doesn’t need to read it, from the looks of it, but perhaps they can discuss how easy this course is together. Have a laugh at the first chapter of the text explaining the properties of water.

It takes him a moment to answer. “I’ve sort of been busy with other classes, actually.”

Jemma is growing frustrated. The more she tries to engage with him, the more he seems like a self-absorbed knob.

“Yeah,” she says, nodding along. “Me too.” In an attempt to salvage her dignity, she adds: “Never know what could show up on an exam, though.”

Discouraged, she decides to makes one final school-related attempt.

“Have you been to the library yet? Or logged onto the online database? There’s more journal subscriptions than I could ever read. Molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology… and I know they’ve got lots of engineering ones, too.”

“I’ve been meaning to but, not yet.” He pauses, taking a deep breath. “The truth is, I spend most of my free time working on projects of my own.”

“Really?” Whether or not he meant it, she interprets it as him throwing her a bone. “Like what?”

“Well, right now I’m working on this sort of, drone. It’s multifunctional. Designed to gather intel in places that are too dangerous for humans. Contamination sites, outer space, that sort of thing.”

Here it is. This is what will get him talking. She should’ve led with this, asking him about machines and things. She hasn’t heard him string together sentences like this the entire hour and a half she’s been by his side. And more than that: as he’s pouring sodium hydroxide and outlining the functions he has planned for his drone, she realizes he’s smiling as he does it. Properly smiling. She should steer the conversation toward engineering more often. His smile is quite lovely. And he’s clearly passionate about this project, and that’s something she can relate to. Perhaps their friendship isn’t doomed after all.

“Sounds fascinating,” she offers. “And you do that all on your own?”

“For the most part, yeah.”

He reciprocates by asking what sort of projects she’s been involved in for biochemistry. She decides to tell him about the pharmaceutical internship she did before she arrived here. She leaves out the fact that, due to her age and inexperience, she was not allowed to directly conduct any experiments and was instead responsible for dishes and paperwork, thinking the genius doesn’t need to know. It’s not quite fair, after all. The only reasons she doesn’t have a side project of her own at the moment are logistical in nature. It’s not as easy for a biochemist to keep their own experiments, unless she wants to go capture some animals and keep them in her dorm. Or grow a garden inside of it.

But just then, Jason walks up behind them and asks where they’re at.

“We’ve just finished precipitating the copper metal –” Jemma begins.

“We’re just about to dry the sample –” Leo begins at the same time. They glare over at each other, but neither truncates their sentence.

Jason merely laughs, and continues his rounds.

They can’t agree on how to collect the copper solids, either. They both want to go off-protocol for increased accuracy, but disagree on how. They end up flipping a second (undissolved) penny, and Jemma loses.

Jemma is starting to think it’d be a terrible idea for them to work together on anything outside the confines of this painfully easy laboratory. With more complicated problems, they’d surely find even bigger things to squabble about.

They finish up fairly quickly after that, without any more small-talk. They record the mass of their copper and turn in the carbon copies of their methods and observations.

But once again, they disagree on how to dispose of their leftover acids and bases. He wants to walk them over to the corrosive waste storage; she wants to neutralize them and place them in the general non-halogenated waste bin.

At least this time, Jemma wins the coin toss.

Once they’ve finished cleaning up, Jemma remembers the beginning of the lab. The fact that he walked in eight minutes late, and Jason’s stern reminder about not being able to participate in the future.

“I hope you don’t make a habit of being late,” she warns Leo, trying to sound stern. “It’s not only your grade that’s dependent on your punctuality.” She might be coming off a bit rude at this point, but she doesn’t care as much as she should. He’s been a bit rude on a few occasions already.

“Couldn’t find the building, that’s all,” he mumbles through his teeth, his face slowly going red.

It’s absolutely not the excellent excuse she anticipated, and Jemma isn’t pleased that he hasn’t given her any assurance he won’t be late in the future.

Still, as they take off their PPE and pack up their things, she starts to feel guilty about her brusqueness. She does have to spend dozens more hours with him in here, and he’s far from the worst lab partner she could have. He’s very clever, at least, and they completed the experiment without any errors or holdups.

“Looks like you guys make quite the team,” Jason says, coming up behind them by surprise again. “I’ll have to come up with some extra experimentation for you two next week, since this was clearly too easy for you.”

She definitely hears Leo sigh.

Jemma can’t let them leave them off like this.

“Well, it was nice meeting you, Fitz,” she says before either of them can leave.

It’s too late when she realizes she called him ‘Fitz’ instead of ‘Leo.’ He doesn’t comment on her fixation with his last name, and she’s too embarrassed to acknowledge the slip-up and correct herself.

“Yeah,” he says, slinging his backpack on. “You too.”

Before he can turn away, she holds out her hand in a gesture of goodwill. An olive branch.

“See you next week?” she says, gently smiling at him.

For a moment he’s frozen with surprise, just staring down at her hand. But eventually he reaches for her extended hand with an equally apologetic smile, almost as though he realizes they’ve both cocked it up a bit.

But as soon as his hand touches hers, she forgets about all that. Him stumbling in late, their disagreements, his thinly veiled irritation with her questions. Because this is not like any other handshake she’s ever had – a vague pressure deep under her skin to indicate the other person has squeezed her hand sufficiently hard.

This is so much more than that.

A million dead neurons resurrect beneath his hesitant touch, flooding her brain with signals it’s not nearly prepared to receive. Callouses on his palms from working with his hands too much, the layer of slick moisture coating their hands from hours of wearing gloves. Every individual metacarpophalangeal joint pressing into her palm, the whispers of hairs on the back of his hand against the pad of her thumb. The extra strength tucked away in his larger, thicker grip that really only comes from having ten times the circulating testosterone.

It’s him.

Oh, God, it’s him.

It doesn’t matter that he’s a reticent engineer, that he was late or that they seem to love to annoy and interrupt each other. Suddenly all that matters to Jemma is that this endearingly pasty hand feels like it was meant for hers. That this clever, slightly grumpy, painfully quiet boy is the soulmate she’s spent her life waiting for. The boy she’s supposed to be with forever.

She realizes she’s still staring down at their linked hands, and that this conciliatory handshake has gone on far too long. She glances back up to his face, to find him staring blankly down at her hand, too. When he meets her eyes it’s only a fraction of a second later, but it feels like a lifetime.

Okay. Don’t panic, she tells herself. Assess the situation.

But he doesn’t look like he’s just experienced what she has. She’s heard stories, watched films, even seen it with her own eyes a handful of times. There’s almost always shouting, squealing of some kind. But Fitz – damn it, Leo – is silent.

Suddenly, he yanks his hand away.

She inhales sharply at the rush of friction across her skin, sending zings all the way up her arm.

Paralysed with shock, all she can do is watch Fitz as his expression turns grave, like he’s both confused and disturbed by this lengthy episode of physical contact.

This can’t be a match, either.

Tears welling up in her eyes, Jemma quickly concludes she can’t let on what’s just happened. He’d transfer himself to a different lab section in an instant if he found out.

But before she can figure out a way to improvise a professional farewell, he gives her a quick mumbled affirmative to whatever she’d asked (what was it???) and practically leaves skid marks on the linoleum as he turns around to head for the nearest exit door. In what seems like a fraction of a second, the door is slamming into its stopper and he’s out of sight.

Karmic Tools Special Eclipse Update: June 30 – July 6, 2019

This week is special! There are no official activations, however, there is a Total Solar Eclipse adding energy to our annual New Moon in Cancer that falls on July 2nd so I thought I would devote this week to that.

Cancer time this year, like last year, again brings us face-to-face with some major choices & decisions which will likely require some form of *Assimilation & Elimination*. Cancer’s gift is processing all that passes through your system, taking in the nutrient (that makes the system work) and any excesses or toxins that cannot be “assimilated” must be “eliminated”. If/when you do not eliminate excesses or toxins regularly, then blockages (some form of dis-ease or discomfort) will occur. Quality nourishment (what you take into your system) is vital to the proper functioning of the whole. If you have held on to anything overlong, that has not been put to proper use, then you may be particularly toxic (within or without), and you will have to cleanse & heal first, then you can start to rebuild & fortify, naturally.

Digestion, Assimilation & Elimination are truly Cancer’s domain and one or all may require periodic “time outs” to process all that has come through your *system* over the last 6-12-18-months (Sun/Moon) and 9/18-years (Eclipses). The last time we experienced Cancer/Capricorn Eclipses was 2009-2011, and before that 2000-2002. So this Summer brings much more clearing than the usual to the Annual Process. Keep in mind that, on one or many levels, you have released the past, you’ve cleared space and created new *flow* that must also be properly directed ~ this is a 2-way process of flow – your input & your output.

Your Higher Self does this naturally, but ego/personality has preferences and can cause problems along the way. Your Soul has been very busy working on your behalf, positioning you for greatness, stripping the weakness and letting you know the areas of your life which have been in a famine (for however long, for whatever reason). Cancer time beckons, “come out of the storm (of life), dry off by a warm fire (your heart), replenish your Self with light-filled food and quality rest!” You are no good to your team, in fact you are a danger and liability to your team, if you are not centered, balanced, properly fortified and fully rested. When you ARE, then you can be alert and focused, strong and productive. You are initiating a whole new level of personal self-care and responsibilities with this new eclipse series.

In more practical terms, Cancer is the time to restore your energy, replenish your physical & spiritual nutrients, stabilize your foundation, clear your physical body and personal space of the past, any debris or clutter and assess your inner & outer productivity with special attention to strengthening & fortifying yourself so you can CREATE come next month (Leo).

Eclipses have a 2-3 year cycle of anchoring the energies for bigger 8-10 and 18-20 year cycles. In this case, 2018-2020 is activating some of the same energies & shifts that were activated 2009-2011, before that 2000-2002 and before that, 1990-1992. Please note it does not necessarily activate the same events, just similar issues, energy & decisions may be on the table at this time. No matter how you cut it, Eclipses signify CHANGE, so being as conscious as possible and having a frame of reference should help you make better choices NOW with all the education and tools you’ve acquired over the last two cycles. APPLY IT! As it relates to your Sacred Space/Home ~AND~ your Contribution/Heart-Centered Work … consider the following questions:

• What were you going thru then? • What lessons of emotional balance & responsibility were you completing? and initiating? • How were your definitions of Home & Work changing & evolving? • What were you learning about your ancestors? • What “primary mountain” were you trying to climb at that time? • How was your family structure changing? • How was your career evolving? • What was your definition of Emotional & Material Security? • Who were the people in your private/intimate circle? • Who were the people in your public/professional circle? • How were you opening up to a new level of existence? • How was the millennium kicking off for you?

 … NOW – How are things shifting and changing in your life today? Consider the above questions for here & now. How will you choose DIFFERENTLY this time?

All Eclipses are considered “course correctors” ~ whether you’re a little (or a lot) off ���course’ ~ and they are “intensified” solar & lunar energies pouring around and through you (no matter your level of consciousness). Things will be particularly intense during the month before, the month of and the month after each Eclipse.

Where are you in your evolution at this time? Do you feel like a “new you” is bubbling and about to burst open with life? Or perhaps you’ve just begun your journey of self-discovery and are just getting present to your evolution, maybe a little groggy, but waking up nonetheless? Wherever you are in your development, the Winter & Summer Seasons of 2018-2020 will be extremely revealing and (hopefully) creative & fun too!

There will likely be some aspects of the process that are uncomfortable but that’s the way growth & expansion goes. There are certain things you would not undertake (even the most necessary of changes) voluntarily, so these radical shifts, activated by the eclipse energy, are how the Universe contributes to your process. The ultimate blessing is to actually be conscious through it!! To recognize where you are, the changes that are happening (whether you like it or not) and decide how you can contribute to this evolution … how you can co-create with this energy.

Also, reflect on the last few cycles of Cancer/Capricorn Eclipses, what did they activate for you? Are you just beginning to get the “aha” moment about now? Most times the energy is too intense AT the time and it is hard to know exactly what or where the energies are pushing you. Eclipse cycles tend to take about 6-months to clarify the activation, while the entire process of initiation takes 2-3 years to anchor the next 8-10 years, with an extended realm of effects for 18-20 years. What do you want anchored by then where your Home/Sacred Space, as well as your Work/Contribution are both concerned?

Remember, a Solar Eclipse often activates your physical body, while the Lunar Eclipse activates your emotional body, but together, your spiritual body should go to a completely new level. The lessons this month will center around emotional & material security; home & work; sacred space and sacred work; private & public life; Sacred Feminine & Masculine; Archetypal Mother & Father. How can you be more responsible for your feelings (Inner), as well as what you create in the world (Outer)? How can you connect to a deep sense of belonging (Cancer) and an authentic sense of responsibility for your life and life’s work (Capricorn)?

Remember, ‘how you start is often how you finish’ and Cancer Initiates this quarter of the year ~ Summer Solstice -to- Fall Equinox ~ for there is deep value (and potency) in this (extended) moment in time. Cancer/Leo/Virgo prepares us for upcoming Libra/Scorpio/Sagittarius which will complete the annual cycle. Despite 3-D obligations, clocks, calendars, families, bosses etc all competing for your time and attention, I urge you to put on your ‘invisibility cloak’ and MAKE TIME for several periodic TIME OUTS (or one long one). Take some time to soak in the Light (before it recedes), bask, and while you’re doing that, reflect on all that you’ve created with your energy and efforts over the course of the last 6-mos -to- 1-year.

• How well did your efforts PRODUCE? • How well did your investments (time, energy & money) PROVIDE? • What is the QUALITY of your return thus far? • Are there areas of your life BLOSSOMING with overflow, bounty and beauty (and multiplying like crazy)? • Are there still other areas of your life WILTING, dying on the vine, not being nourished properly or receiving enough Light? • What do you WANT to do? • What does your HEART say to do? • What ‘FEELS’ right at the moment? • What should you NOT attempt to continue to grow (in your life)? • What should you pay some special attention to because you KNOW it will bear fruit if you would just give it some quality, direct and focused energy and attention?

I’d also like to remind you that 2018-2020 also brings in Cancer/Capricorn Eclipses around the Solstice times, making it even more imperative that you make any decisions regarding ‘course correction’ at this time. With the Mercury Retrograde in Cancer/Leo, you will have a unique opportunity (in this potent year of change) to regroup this Cancer season. Summer Solstice and the Sun moving in to Cancer Initiates the second half of the year every year and activates a deeply transformative *Integration* process with Pluto in Capricorn. Use this time, at least initially, to gather courage, cultivate integrity, tweak your plan and prepare for the delicious (and fun) creativity you will have access to next month.
