"The city court of Vyborg [Finnish: Viipuri] has ordered that the Finnish soldiers' grave monument with name plaques located in Koivisto, i.e. the current Primorsk on the Karelian Isthmus, must be completely demolished as an unauthorized structure."
"russia has begun to build a systematic propaganda story about "Finnish Nazis" who allegedly participated in the siege of Leningrad and committed war crimes."
Location of Viipuri and Koivisto on the ceded Finnish Karelia
Some of the 102 graves of fallen Finnish soldiers (Koivisto locals) at Koivisto cemetery on 6 September 1942. (x)
The current monuments were built in 2019 and were financed by the evacuated Koivisto locals and their descendants. The original graves and monuments had been demolished. To be able to erect the monuments, multiple permits were required and obtained at the time. The planning office of the Leningrad region was involved and made the necessary Russian architectural plans. (x)
The monuments have been vandalised at least twice.
These photos are from 2020. The monuments were also vandalised by removal of the name plates shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The plates have been missing since then. (x)
Finland and Russia signed a state treaty in 1992 which obliges both parties to protect and take care of World War II graves and memorials in each other's territories. (x)
