Day 5: Oct 30th, Sunnyside Manor & Sleepy Hollow. Today was a great day to see a manor and some graves. We started the day at the famous Sunnyside Manor of Washington Irving (author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”) and then ventured to the headless horsemen bridge & Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. It’s October, so time to read some spooky stuff. I remember seeing the Disney Legend of Sleepy Hollow animated film as a kid on Wonderful World of Disney and being absolutely terrified. And I loved @serena_valentino_author’s comic, Gloom Cookie, from back in the day. So I guess I was predisposed to like this book. What really impressed me is how it so completely doesn’t take the obvious path of “the Headless Horseman is back! How’re we gonna stop him!” Instead, it turns the classic tale around a bit, showcasing some unfortunately more contemporary evils. Cuyper - Van Houten House in Nauraushaun, NY.

The core of this sandstone house was built in 1731 by Tunis Cuyper. The roof over the main wing of the house was raised and a wing was added in c. 1832 by its new owner, Rulef C. Van Houten. There have been additional wings added to the home since this lantern slide was created.

This house was one of the principle settings of the silent film Headless Horseman (1922) starring Will Rogers. Morris Van Houten, rented the outside of his home to the film company.

The movie’s leading lady, Lois Meredith, insisted on having a room in the house to change costumes and freshen up and the Van Houtens agreed to that use. It’s probable that Will Rogers changed in the barn.

The movie company also used Van Houten’s horses and other local items.

The house was chosen because it looked like a typical Hudson Valley Dutch house that could have been used as a tavern. Many of the scenes in the movie took place on the lawn.
