Misc. Vox Fic Rec List
Tumblr media
Welcome to my Miscellaneous Vox Fic Rec List!
Soooo after a lot of consideration, I decided to make a third rec list. This one will be for miscellaneous fics, which can mean anything from smaller Vox pairings to fics that are not strictly Radiostatic or VoxVal. You'll see what I mean.
I will keep updating this periodically as I read more fics, too, so feel free to check back every once and a while! I'll reblog it when I update it, plus make a note with the date at the top. Trust me, this is by no means a complete list; there's fics I still want to add to this that I just haven't gotten to yet. I just decided to go ahead and post it anyways, because if I kept waiting until I ran out of fics to rec I'd probably be working on this forever.
These are not in any particular order; I'm going by both my Bookmarks list on AO3 and my memory of fics I forgot to bookmark. I also tried to make notes on what fics were written before season 1 released, but I might have missed some, so keep that in mind.
Please let me know if any links don't work or are wrong!
✨Before you proceed:✨ read the tags on these fics if you decide to read them. Many of them have heavy material - no surprise given the fandom, but still, felt like this needed said. On that note, there's also fics with explicit material and some fics are straight up PWP. Again, read at your own risk/heed the tags.
Fic Rec List Masterpost
Radiostatic Fic Rec List
Staticmoth Fic Rec List
------
Alastor Makes a Porno by Charnel_Goat, spappest
Summary: Alastor interrupts Val and Vox's personal time to get his rut over and done with, and they're just going to have to deal with that.
Basically, Alastor and Val try to have a threesome, but they keep arguing, everyone's injuring each other trying to figure out the logistics, and nobody cares what Vox has to say about any of this.
Notes: This has Staticmoth, Radiostatic, and Valastor. It's not strictly leaning more towards any pairing (tho Val does make a pretty sweet comment at the very beginning about Vox lol), which is why it's going on the Misc List. Porn with an edge of hilarity that - despite the tags - made it pretty funny. Three terrible people being terrible to each other. Vox suffers. Heed the tags.
He's Visual, Alright! by dead_boy
Summary: For Valentines Day, Charlotte Morningstar— Lucifer’s brat— had announced the hotel would be hosting a sweetheart poll, allowing winners to vote for the biggest ‘sweethearts’ in Pentagram City! How adorable!
— Of course, when Angel gets involved, things get a little twisted, and hell treats it as a most-fuckable-celebs poll.
Vox isn’t the only one surprised by how high he scored, and how concerning the amount of votes he received was.
But there was no way in hell this “demand” was enough to make him give into Valentino and Velvet’s newest fixation: Making use of this fame and making Vox do some modelling!
Surely he won’t mind the lingerie and toys provided by Velvet and Valentino respectively, right?
edit march 2024: i can’t believe he just won the hottest hazbin character poll. literally manifested
Notes: Poly Vees. Funny af. Vox suffers, but in a good way. Written BEFORE the hottest HH character poll, can you believe that? Lmao.
stray by vol_ctrl
Summary: How Vox met Vark. ♥
Notes: No ship. Written before season 1 release.
After the Credits Roll by leftofrevolution
Summary: Everyone knew the Magnes sometimes liked to spice up their sex life by dragging another demon into the middle of it.
Vox maybe should have paid more attention to that particular tidbit of information than he did.
Notes: Lilith/Lucifer/Vox. Chapter 1 written before season 1 release, with Chapter 2 being released after season 1 release. I read for the crackship, ended up liking the Lilith/Lucifer/Vox dynamic and world-building a LOT. Lol. Poor Vox. Or good for him? Still has yet to be seen.
The Shopping Cart Test by spappest
Summary: Angel never expected Prince Charming to have a TV for a head, but when Vox kills Valentino and saves him from his abuse, well… Maybe Hell doesn’t have to be all that bad. With Val out of the way, everyone can have a happy ending. Angel’s safe, Charlie’s happy, and even Alastor finds love.
Oh, wait. This is Hell. It’s always that bad.
Notes: Angel/Vox. Started before season 1 release. First Staticdust fic I read. :)
Hold Me Up by Sameko
Summary: Vox has been in and out of a relationship with Valentino for years. Always breaking up. Always coming back.
Then one night comes the definitive crack at the expense of one of Valentino's employees, to which Vox never paid much attention other than for shits and giggles.
One night, one word too many, might be enough to shift the perspectives of two people once strangers to each other.
Notes: Staticdust. Pretty bleak and dark at times, but so, SO good. Two broken people trying not to cut each other with their edges while also trying to help each other.
Cruel Melody by Hiding_Behind_a_Pencil_and_Pen
Summary: A man hopelessly in love with a monster, despite how much it hurts.
A person chained to a beast he can never escape, no matter how hard he tries.
Vox and Angel Dust have given their body and heart to Valentino, and neither know how to free themselves from his lies.
But maybe, even if it never gets better, they won't have to suffer alone.
Or,
What if Husk was just a little too late to get to the bar in episode four? And a certain media Overlord helped Angel instead. They find out that they're not so different after all.
Notes: As of now, I think this is Queerplatonic Staticdust.
Revelations in Technicolor by Awesome_Possum
Summary: Velvette had been dead for six years, part of The Vees for four, and fucking Vox for a little over two. They had a good thing going.
On one of their bi-weekly Vox-mandated movie nights, Valentino put a plan into motion and Velvette learned something new and surprising about her business partner and part-time sugar daddy that made a shocking amount of sense.
It ultimately ended up bringing The Vees closer and if Valentino claimed that was his intention all along, no one had any reason to believe him.
Notes: The Vees are a V and Vox is the hinge, so he's in a relationship with both Valentino and Velvette. Interesting headcanons for Vox's human life. :) (What is the ship name for Velvette/Vox again?)
System Shutdown by Swoolie
Summary: Taking a leaf from Alastor's book, Vox goes on a small break from everything.
He doesn't stick around long enough to see the chaos that ensues after his sudden disappearance.
Notes: This is tagged with both Radiostatic and Staticmoth. It's too early in the story to tell definitively which direction it's going to end up, so for now it's going to be on the Misc list. I'll probably move it when it becomes more clear what the main pairing will be.
Dapple Rose by The_Penny_Tails
Summary: Everyone always assumes the same thing about Alastor and Vox's relationship: That it's one-sided, that it's based on fixation, and that the reason for their falling out was due to the obsession turning into something that couldn't be controlled.
All of those assumptions are correct. The only problem is, everyone gets the 'who is obsessing over whom' part of the equation wrong.
When Vox and Valentino end up stuck at the hotel, suddenly the entire relationship between the radio and television is put on display, casting it and Alastor in an entirely different light.
Notes: Tagged with both Radiostatic and Staticmoth. Due to both this and the entire story itself (you'll see what I mean when you read it), it's going here on the Misc List. I freaking love this story, because so far I've not seen another fic where Alastor was obsessed with Vox while Vox was not obsessed with him in return. :3 Everything Penny_Tails writes is gold!
Here I Come by Heliosolar
Summary: Vox contemplates his lackluster life as he stands over the edge of the city.
Or, the fall of Vox, both mentally and physically.
Notes: Written before season 1 release. No ships, just Vox. Heed the tags.
Entertainment for Two by Heliosolar
Summary: With the radio demon joining them for the night, Vox puts on a show the two overlords will never forget.
Notes: Written before season 1 release. Staticmoth and Radiostatic, at the same time. 😳
Proposition by Snorp_Lord
Summary: Alastor does not, strictly speaking, have a 'relationship' with the King of Hell. But they certainly have a something.
A something which does not include Vox. But Alastor is at least willing to indulge Lucifer in whatever this new idea is.
The new idea is Vox.
Notes: Contains Radiostatic, Radioapple, and Staticapple, but for this installment, Radiostatic is definitely the focus. Very intense, pretty sweet. 😳 Has 2 more parts in the series which are definitely worth the read, though they don't feature Vox as much.
meteor shower by spoondrifts
Summary: alastor, rosie, vox, and a study in non-traditional love.
Notes: QPR Alastor/Rosie/Vox. Very good! (What's the ship name for this?? Radiostaticrose?? Radiorosestatic?? Roseradiostatic?? Staticradiorose??)
spiraling down thy majesty by spoondrifts
Summary: “Okay, um, time out,” Lucifer said, because he felt like they were maybe losing the plot a little. “I feel like I should remind you that I’m not here because I was like, uh, overwhelmed with lust for you, in particular. I’m here because Husk said you were Alastor’s ex and I have poor impulse control and thought it’d be funny, but I’m realizing now that this is actually just really weird and you, my friend, have some serious issues that I am not equipped to handle.”
Or: Lucifer and Vox have a shared problem that starts with Al and ends in stor and has a in the middle—thankfully, there's a solution! (The solution is sex. It's just sex.)
Notes: Staticapple. Revenge sex. As in...they're both getting revenge on Alastor...using each other. Lol.
(Fic rec list to be continued as I read more)

Tagged by @stillness-in-green for 'ten songs you're vibing to right now'. Sorry I'm so late doing this one.
Igorrr, Himalaya Massive Ritual I was tempted to just list this one ten times. A lot of Igorrr's stuff sounds like boss battle music for a game where you fight a series of increasingly incomprehensible gods. I listened to this track while fucking around on hills and it made me want to eat the hills.
Cocteau Twins, Beatrix
Kiki Rockwell, Madeline There's a cartoon named Ringing Bell about a sheep who aspires to kill a wolf, and how this aspiration ends up being very costly. This song has a similar energy. The lyrics alone don't really capture how menacing it feels.
Kevin Aviance, Cunty Makes you want to kick a door down while shouting, 'FeeLING like an orCHID.'
Ghost, From the Pinnacle to the Pit
Cream, White Room
Mastodon, Peace and Tranquility
Jazmin Bean, Saccharine This stands out because it expresses a sentiment that I don't see very often.
QotSA, My God Is The Sun I always seem to end up listening to this in summer.
Mastodon, Tread Lightly
Tagging @shiroikabocha @sonntam @hightechzombie @vintar @alishatheninth @crookedmouth-mountainbones @ghoulettesinspace @mokonahapuuuuuu @wastelandeer @a-whole-lotta-heck @cafait @angryinterrobang @leftofrevolution @beifongz @droil @austencollins @magicemperor

First Sentence Game
The Rule: Share the first sentence of your ten most recent fics.
Personal Caveat: Since nine of my ten most recent fics have been for event weeks or prompt lists, I'm cheating a little and just picking one favorite first sentence from any given "set" of stories. Otherwise, these are presented from most recent to farthest back.
Tagging: @codenamesazanka, @robotlesbianjavert, @leftofrevolution, @desultory-novice, and anyone else who wants to play!

ao3 wrapped reader: 6 28 29 30?
reader asks
What's your absolute favorite works you read this year?
I have two!! They’re some of the only long fics I’ve read this year and they just blew me away. The first is Runner by Jessepinwheel. It’s a The LEGO Movie fanfic which is an AU where Good Cop lives instead of Bad Cop and then goes “what if he got sent back in time and had to try and save Bad Cop”. It’s a brilliant fic and really explores morality and the consequences of Good Cop’s actions both in the present and past. I read it during May and started sobbing during the climax so you know it’s good.
My other fic is from me to you by microcosmo. It’s a Pokemon Sword and Shield fic. It takes place in an au where Leon has been distant from his family for the last few years following becoming champion. This all changes however when their mother dies and Leon is given custody of Hop, forcing Hop to leave his life behind and move in with a brother who he never really knew. There’s a heavy exploration of their bonds and their relationship and how the title of champion impacts Leon and Hop in their daily life. Here’s a snippet of it that I adore:
He offers condolences instead, because it’s the very least he can do for a brother who was never really a brother, but someone he shared a mother with nonetheless.
Did any line/passage stick with you after you read it?
I would say the line I just put, but I’ll do something else lol
He's alive.
But soon, he won't be.
He takes a deep breath, counts to ten, lets it out.
He gets it now. He isn't meant to take the Piece of Resistance and stop the Kragle, after all.
He's meant to die.
The realization settles on him gently, and he takes it in, breath by breath. It feels like clarity.
This quote from Runner haunts me. I think about it once a month at LEAST.
“Wishful thinking,” Robotnik echoed. Stone had wished to be his friend? That was perhaps even more strange. He thought about that – about Stone wishing, and his old bitter certainty that nobody would ever have that wish. “I wish we had been friends too,” he said.
He felt the regret of a missed opportunity – and that angered him, because in his current form there should be no opportunity that he wasn’t able to take advantage of.
But of course being friends with this creature now was out of the question, given their disparate situations. “In this moment I think I almost wish I were human again,” he mused, “So that I could experience a friendship with you.”
This quote from Welcome To The New Age by LMT is what I think of every time I think of Stobotnik
Stone understood that he would no longer be property of the government once he was assigned to him. Instead, he would be Robotnik’s and Robotnik’s alone, no longer his own, yet nothing to Robotnik either. To the Doctor, he was an object to use and dispose of as he saw fit, and most days, even less.
LAST ONE I PROMISE. This quote from Total Apathy by @bread-bird-writes redefined how I thought of their relationship and I think about it Constantly
Do you have any works you think are required reading for (fandom)?
YES. Runner is most definitely the fic for The LEGO Movie, but I have a few others. You know, I won’t miss you when you’re gone by @leftofrevolution was the first fic I ever read for the fandom and it made me love the characters so much. Plus literally any SpellCleaver fic for the Star Wars fandom
Biggest surprise for you as a reader this year?
can I just say “read and loved The LEGO Movie fanfics” because I did NOT see that one coming

One funny thing about Gabriel taking over as nanny for a week is that you just know he's going to run into Mr. Dowling at some point and they end up talking about sports for about 5 minutes, so Mr. Dowling walks away with the completely wrong impression that the substitute nanny is a Fellow American who is going to teach his son how to Be A Man, and Gabriel walks away feeling vaguely uncomfortable because Mr. Dowling kept on winking at him and emphasizing words strangely and What Did It Mean.
“You know, I thought male nannies would all be namby-pamby little fairies, but you! You seem like a great fella!”
Gabriel’s face was blank as he froze in the corridor, peering up at the cheerful - he thought - expression of Mr Dowling, the would-be father of the Antichrist. He plastered a bright beam onto his own face, although “namby-pamby” wasn’t registering in his memory as a word he knew. Great fella, though, that was pretty expressive. “I’m not a fairy, Mr Dowling,” Gabriel said, with a hearty chuckle of his own, “I am an angel of the Almighty.”
“A God-fearing man, just what I like to hear!” Mr Dowling said, clapping Gabriel on the shoulder, and Gabriel copied the motion back to him, although it made Mr Dowling wheeze quietly at the force of the friendly blow. “And how do you know Nanny?”
“Lilith Ashtoreth?” Gabriel asked, racking his brains. “How do I know her?”
“Yeah!” Mr Dowling coughed, his eyes flitting away, and then he said, “Woman like her, wouldn’t surprised if she knew all kindsa men, but a guy like you, a man of God, big, uh, manly? Or is that what she likes?” Mr Dowling blinked one of his eyes in the motion that was known to Gabriel as a wink. He didn’t know what it meant.
“She likes death and destruction, Mr Dowling,” Gabriel said.
“Ha! No doubt! But what about in men?”
“Uh,” Gabriel said, looking at Mr Dowling’s expression, “the infernal and the damned, I expect.”
“So you and her don’t…?”
“Don’t what?”
“You know,” Mr Dowling said, and then he growled like a dog in a way that Gabriel had no idea what to make of. “Do ya show her what she’s good for?”
“Mr Dowling,” Gabriel said pleasantly, “The nanny is good only to be annihilated.”
Mr Dowling’s face was frozen for a second, but then he burst out laughing, and playfully punched Gabriel in the chest. “Atta boy!” he crowed, and walked off down the corridor. Gabriel squinted to himself, running back through this conversation in his head. Nothing about it made sense.
“Gabriel?” Warlock called from the bottom of the stairs.
“Yes, Infernal Spawn of the Damned One?”
“Can we go swimming?”
“Are you wearing your special garments for the purpose?”
“Yes!”
“Okay!”

Galennic, Force Bonding
Force Bonding
Orson stumbles on it when he’s trying to research the crystals he’s gathered to give to Galen. It’s a few lines in the text, an offhand mention, but it gets his imagination going.
Two people, usually a master and padawan, but often close friends as well, are known to form bonds between them, lines running though the Force that tie them more closely together than other people. Ties that cannot be broken, no matter what else happens to the relationship. They are the lines of fate and future and meaning.
That’s all it takes, of course. Orson has always been good at putting information together from sources that seem too separate. He’s always been good with information about people, at that. And he knows, now.
He knows that the shiver that runs down his back every time he sees Galen, that’s the Force. He knows it’s real.
He knows it’s destiny.
And so when Galen runs to Lah’mu? Well, Orson knows he’ll find Galen. He knows those lines can’t be broken. He knows that he and Galen are tied together by more than a shared history.
And he’s not going to let Galen forget it again.
The Fic I’ll Never Write: Give a Title & Ship, Get a Summary!

2, 7, and 18 for redestro if you're still taking these
Redestro ( Yotsubashi Rikiya ) This ones a bit long, so included the read more tab for your dash convenience.
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
Oh boy where do I start? That his whole character has little contradictions that are extremely fun and interesting? That he is a fantastic example of 'guy who seems in command and is terrifyingly powerful is actually kind of pathetic.' He is a very two-faced character what with his actual double life as a CEO and the leader of a villainous organization and the way he manages his emotions with such compartmentalization ( for afew reasons: his entire ability to turn into stress-hulk depends on his emotions and physical responses, and he's such a self-restrained, repressed character). That he never truly wanted to be in charge and the devote cult followers of his ancestor's legacy that have been in hiding for generations found him as a young child as the last living heir to the bloodline and even see him as a reincarnation of sorts and said to this child: 'you must rectify the regrets of your ancestor.' That he sees the position more as a burden and smothering in its expectations. His own clone seemed extremely ok with its situation of living a temporary life and dying. While he cares about those under him and tries to avoid unnecessary losses, he has also accepted the emotional distance that they are 'valuable goods' as soldiers and ultimately disposable to the cause -- and despite being their leader he is not exempt to that and views *his own* life this way as well. (Despite that he was more than willing to punish Shigaraki for taking the lives of his subordinates and expressed upset with Shigaraki's actions in taking their lives.) He seems to see himself as a necessary evil and is brutal and cunning to his opposition, but in his villain circle he's familiar and courteous to his colleges. He's a man who's been controlled his entire life so it seems natural he'd be on the people pleasing and submissive side and despite being terrifyingly strong, you could probably shove him in a locker. (except its very hinted at he's claustrophobic in canon. His own self-made iron maiden mech suit designed to cause him max physical and mental stress is called The Claustro. )
7. What's something that the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like? While the fans are few, they are very good. Many of my head canons and appreciations for this underutilized character have come from other passionate fans who have done in-depth analysis and just fantastic fanfiction. (Stillness-in-green and leftofrevolution) I love the work they've done with the character and the in-world concepts when the original creator has left so much unused potential in the original media. Like that because there was an already still existing group of remnant followers that have been around for generations and who found Rikiya as a child, perhaps these figures are more like elders that even Rikiya himself must answer to or receive guidance from. Or expanding on his largely hinted at claustrophobia or how his quirk works with his anatomy like the dark ooze energy that coats him in his full stress form is corporeal and can leak from his marks sometimes. Like I said, there's not much but there are some diamonds to find if you hunt around. 18. What about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire? I don't think 'admire' is the right word to use, but its a dynamic I enjoy between them. Rikiya's relationship with Geten isn't very detailed or fleshed out - very little with this group of characters is -but its an interesting one! Rikiya apparently found young Geten who had scattered from the remains of his clan during their inevitable collapse. Rikiya then took Geten in, and from what we can guess, schooling seemed to not work for Geten so Rikiya excused him from it. This was also because of Geten's own focus and obsession with refining his own strength in his quirk probably made him near impossible to any teaching. When Rikiya took him in, Geten seemed to gain great respect and devotion to him and wanted to be as useful as possible. Not so much to 'the cause' it seems, but more so to Rikiya himself. As Rikiya's life was his cause, Geten chose to be useful in advancing it. To Geten, becoming as strong as possible was his way of doing so. I like the notion that Rikiya has knowingly and unknowingly passed on some not so healthy ideals he himself carries to Geten through their relationship. Besides being villains, an unhealthy intensity of devotion and resolve. I don't think they're close enough to be a 'father-son' relationship, but not so far off from 'teacher-student.' Its somewhere in the middle maybe. But we do know Geten cares about Redestro enough that Rikiya being hurt caused his quirk evolution. We also know that Rikiya puts great trust and belief in Geten's capabilities. ( Though I do rlly enjoy the head canon that Rikiya never truly adopted Geten to avoid passing on his legacy burden to him. )

Tarrlok left with Noatak when they were children. Alternatively, Tarrlok and Pema used to date and are still vaguely friendly and it drives Tenzin up the *wall*.
I need to go away and chew on the first one for a while, but the second one is here.

Songs I'm Vibing To Right Now
Got tagged by both @codenamesazanka and @robotlesbianjavert for "ten songs you're vibing to right now," so there're ten vocal songs and a bonus three instrumental pieces. I tried to use things that are fairly current to my playlists, or at least recently back in circulation there, so they're not all-time favorites, but they are songs for my "right now." They're in no particular order beyond trying not to have too many of the same tempo and/or language in a row. Find Youtube links, write-ups of varying lengths, and small lyrics excerpts (translations in italics for Japanese) under the cut, because, what, I was expected to be concise about this? Please.
(Sparing anybody who doesn't want to have to scroll all the way through this to find out why they're tagged at the bottom, I think Nal and Kota have mostly tagged most of the people in my immediate chat circle, so let's round it out with, oh, @leftofrevolution, @scumtrout, @evilasiangenius, @megkips, @shockersalvage, and @wheredidmydadgo. Share some song recs if you like! With, my verbose ass's example notwithstanding, as much or as little detail as you feel like providing re: Why Vibing. Pardon any double-notifications; drafts and I don't always get along.)
1: Rome, by Dessa: I discovered Dessa via The Hamilton Mixtape and have been following her ever since.  This isn’t my absolute favorite of hers (that’d be the haunting urban fantasy Mineshaft 2), but it’s the one of her recent ones that I’ve had most constantly on playlists.  A brilliant, blistering tirade on wealth disparity, beauty standards, police brutality, and more.
Chekhov says, you got a gun, you gotta use it Guess they’re reading Chekhov downtown in their cruisers Bang, catch the case, we all lose Make Dixie look like Khartoum That Lady Justice ain’t blind yet Lens cap on the body cam, missed again, damn
2: Deep Down, from Chainsaw Man: The closers for this series were, of course, an embarrassment of riches, but while I loved the final lines of this one, I didn’t immediately fall for the main body of the song.  After about the fifth time I’d been so haunted by it I needed to purge by pulling it up on Youtube, though, I finally gave into the inevitable.  I think of this as the, “What comes of tangling with Makima,” song: poisoned, yearning, and drowning.
Negatta mono wo te ni shita kanbi to soushitsu ni nomare (I got what I wanted, but in return I was consumed by sweetness and loss) Dore hodo nagai toki wo tadotteta (I wonder how long it took me?) I call you deep, deep, deep, deep Deep, deep, deep, deep down
3: Butterfly Wing, from Love Live: Almost exactly halfway through the newest show in the franchise—which, I should stress, I do not watch, so take my summary here with a grain of salt—Wien Margarete disrupted Love Live's safe, sheltered, inoffensive status quo like a boulder crashing through the ceiling of a greenhouse.  A solo artist dressing for the role of Swan Lake’s Odile and singing prideful, imperious songs evoking barren landscapes and metaphors for death and transcendence, her debut functioned as an overt declaration of war against groups of girls in rainbow costume dresses singing generically peppy, shallow songs about love and encouragement and sparkling.
While the show wasn’t courageous enough to do anything truly transgressive with her in the end—her second song in this mode (Edelstein, also great) ultimately lost to a song that even fans of the show think is pretty darn generic; from what I’ve read, Wien is one of those characters who exist to be proven wrong and who can only hope to not come off as too much of a strawman in the process—her introduction made a big enough impression to be noticeable well outside the show’s normal circles, with comparisons being made to Macross, Princess Tutu, and Disney villain songs.  All three things I’m very fond of, so, you know, definitely enough to make me take notice!
I gave a link up top to the full version, but here’s a link to the episode clip. Please watch, reflect on the miracle solution to not being able to write vocal harmonies for your massive idol groups being to introduce a middle school edgelord whose whole shtick is that she’s a soloist, and enjoy the hysterically funny expressions of terrified dismay on the faces of the main characters at the fifty second mark.
Tsubasa nado nakutemo toberu no (Even without wings, I can fly) Tamashii ni chou wo yadoshi (I will summon a butterfly into my soul) Sora wo kakeru ano tori yori mo (And even higher than the bird far above) Mabushii iro wo hakidashi nagara Fly, Sky (I will cast blinding colors as I take to the sky.) Erabareru no wa tsuyoku negau mono dake (Only those with strong wishes will be the chosen.)
4: Misty Mountains, by The Wellermen: An incredible cover of the Jackson Hobbit trilogy version of the song by a “bass supergroup” that got their start during the sea shanty craze that Covid brought us.  It’s three verses longer than the Jackson version, plus a bridge of sorts, with each immaculately layered passage developing new variations and body across the full length.  There’s truly nothing like a rich choral performance, and I’m maybe a bit smitten with the contrabasses in this one.
The wind was on the withered heath But in the forest stirred no leaf There shadows lay be night or day And dark things silent crept beneath
5: The Over, for Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans ~ Urdr Hunt: I always admire when there’s a sense of continuity with songs for a series, be it a shared composer or just having new ones who can emulate the original’s sensibility, and I knew the instant I listened to it that The Over was an Iron-Blooded Orphans song, but tweaked just enough to reflect Urdr Hunt’s lighter story hook and its younger, more idealistic (and, it must be said, at least slightly more privileged) protagonist.
It’s got plenty in common, lyrically, with IBO TV’s opening songs, which all talk about the world as being impersonal and grinding and cruel, but those songs take a defiant stance, calling to reach for everything no one will ever give you, to go down fighting rather than roll over and be collared.  The Over lacks that righteous underclass fury—its singer has been hurt by the world, but not hardened by it, and still wants to pursue something that inspired him.  Accordingly, it soars in the chorus in ways none of IBO TV’s songs do.
Dakara doko made mo (That’s why, no matter where) Motto tooku e (Keep going) Tatoe kore ga akeru koto no nai yoru datta to shitemo (Even if this is a night that never ends) Ano ni negatta mono ga fusouou demo (Even if what I wished for that day is unsuited to me) Dou shiyou mo nai hodo boku wo ugokashite (It still desperately moves me)
6: Never Say Goodbye, from Golden Kamuy: GOD THIS SONG IS JUST A BANGER, OKAY.  The English portion of the lyrics is a bit stilted (“This is my doorway to kiss the end”?), but as far as I’m concerned, four seasons in, they’ve finally found a perfect aural match for Golden Kamuy’s revisionist-Western-by-way-of-Hokkaido vibe.  The yowling rap trading off with the earnest sweetness, the rotations between pounding, throaty, brass-heavy urgency and soaring, string-carried wistfulness—it’s a perfect pastiche of a song for a perfect pastiche of a show.
Taiko kara tsunagaru kono taiko ga towa wo shinjiru kimi e no kaitou sa (This drum, connected from ancient times is the answer to you who believe in eternity) Mada da ze, madamada da ze tabi wa tsuzuku haruka kanata made (Not yet, it’s not over yet, the journey continues far away) Ima wa ‘Never say goodbye’ de mata aimashou (Let’s meet again at ‘Never say goodbye’) So, hasta la vista, baby!
7: Toki no Meikyuu, from Macross Frontier Short Animation ~ Labyrinth of Time: Hi, yes, would you like to hear about the strings of alphanumeric that bring me to tears every damn time I hear them?  That are making me tear up just in the process of writing about them?  They’re in this song from the Macross Frontier animation short attached to the Delta movie, and they make me So Emotional.
So like, the whole thing with the Frontier movies is that they ended in a decidedly downbeat fashion, with the male lead Alto lost in space, the older and more established idol Sheryl in a coma, and the younger newbie idol Ranka telling herself she’ll get them back—eventually.  Labyrinth of Time is where that starts to happen.
Outside of categorical exceptions like musical theatre and story songs, most songs don’t tend to be very specific in terms of who they’re directed to. That’s certainly true of the songs in Macross as well, especially from the singers consciously modeled off of idols. They’re songs aimed at “You”—an imagined listener, who at best might fit a few broad traits: the You the singer has a crush on, the You the singer looks up to, the You the singer wants to comfort.  Those songs will get plugged into dramatically appropriate moments, scenes that make it obvious who the You in a given song is aimed at, but they still don’t name names, because the songs are still notionally something that could be found on the singer’s album, now on sale at whatever music sales-front is available in-universe.
Toki no Meikyuu is about Ranka calling for Alto and Sheryl—not You, not the general listener, but specifically Alto and Sheryl.  And you can tell that not only because of the personalized nature of the lyrics in the verses, but also because, in the choruses, she identifies her Yous by callsign: 0258-S04 and 0215-F09.  During the songwriting process, legendary composer Yoko Kanno asked the producer for a list of numbers and letters that would be relevant/meaningful for the characters, selections from which she mixed around and set to the song’s meter.  The resulting callsigns reference aspects of the characters’ history, both in-universe and in the broader franchise, so there is no one else in the universe Ranka could possibly mean when she sings out those callsigns in desperation to be reunited with her dearest ones.
And then Sheryl comes in after the bridge with a distant, faint version of one of her own iconic numbers, and gathers strength, and then they both start calling Alto’s callsign????????  JUST DROWN ME IN MY OWN WEEPING, WHY DON’T YOU.
(I’m physically incapable of picking any one stretch of lyrics for this one, sorry.  It’s sung to two people—how could I pick a portion aimed only at one? I wish I could provide you all with a really good lyric video, or even a good color-coded text rendering, but I'm afraid the best I've got is this one, which at least puts Sheryl's parts in parentheses.)
8: The Turn of a Friendly Card, Pts. 1 and 2, by The Alan Parsons Project: The Alan Parsons Project, a long-since disbanded British art rock/project album band, is really more my BF’s lane than mine, but I’m a sucker for this kind of late 70s-style synth, especially combined with gorgeous beds of strings and anguished lyrics.  This song in full is a sixteen-minute suite in five parts about gambling addiction; the title parts bookend the rest, with the opening being very delicate and meticulous, and the closing resuming in that mode but winding itself up into tightly controlled keening and orchestration that just keeps going harder through the outro.  Great stuff, and it has one of those melodic lines that lingers in my mind for days after every listen.
There’s a sign in the desert that lies to the west Where you can’t tell the night from the sunrise And not all the king’s horses and all the king’s men Have prevented the fall of the unwise
9: Do You Hate Windy Days? (White Ryu version), from Zombieland Saga: One of the joys of Zombieland Saga is the stylistic diversity of its music.  The conceit of the show—girls from different decades reanimated as zombie idols—means that, while the bulk of the girls’ default songs are pop rock idol numbers, the “character” songs and more oddball moments have the benefit of being able to lean on styles from different eras of music. In the case of this song, it’s more direct than usual: Do You Hate Windy Days? is not, itself, even an idol song, but rather the “original” song, of which Franchouchou’s version (centered by motorcycle punk Saki, because ZLS is outstanding) is merely a “cover.”
While their version is a lot of fun, sped up and joyous, I have to give the edge to the White Ryu "original."  It was written to be the kind of one hit wonder that would be all over the Japanese radio in the 90s, a soulful, synth-heavy ballad about drive-in theaters (a fad in Japan at the time) and adolescent disillusionment and growing up.  Performed by a local celebrity in irl Saga named Hakuryu, it’s an unironic throwback of a song, earnest, wistful and nostalgic, and chock-full of encouraging vibes.
Ore to nita omae to tsurun deta doraibuin (Us two alike hanging out at the drive-in) Akete iku sora no hikari ni sae mo iradatte niramitsuketa (Even glaring at that irritating morning light) Ahh, dakedo itsuka wa kitto wakaru-sa (Oh, but someday you'll definitely get it) Ahh, sou sa, omae wa kitto kawaru sa (Oh, for sure, you're gonna change) Ano hi no jibun o dakishimete yareru sonna jibun ni nareru sa (You'll be a you who can embrace the you that you were)
10: Binary Star, from Legends of the Galactic Heroes ~ Die Neue These: The central metaphor of the two sides of an unending conflict being as a binary star system hit like a train the first time I heard this song and I'm still not over it.  Good god, what a great conceit.  Musically speaking, it’s very Sawano Hiroyuki doing what Sawano Hiroyuki always does, which can get a bit samey, but if the groove he’s in is yours, it’s great stuff—incredibly dramatic, rich, electric and layered.  But mainly I’m here for that metaphor.  Locked together but irreconcilably torn.  Binary heart.  My god. Wow.
Binary A centrifugal force pushing us far away That’s our eternity Binary We can’t escape the force crushing us, gravity Is our eternity
BONUS INSTRUMENTAL PIECES: Since I got tagged twice, here’re some instrumental pieces that can’t properly be called “songs” but that I’m vibing to right now all the same.
1: Tenkyuu, from Kono Oto Tomare!: With a title that translates to Rain From a Cloudless Sky, this is an eight-minute koto chamber piece for seven players, but don’t let yourself be put off by it if you think it sounds a little too classical and stodgy.  The changes in tempo and volume, the incredible beauty and intensity, the breathtaking precision and control with which it takes you through its different movements, up that final mounting climb, and to the perfect catharsis of its final plucked note—this piece is, as is even commented on within the series, the kind of performance that could win over even people from outside the hobby.  Kono Oto's anime is not exactly a marvel of adaptation, but it did see the CD containing this and several other tracks played by various different clubs in the series becoming more widely available, and I’m incredibly thankful for that.
2: Otome no Policy, from the Sailor Moon Classic Concert 2018 Album: The concert albums Sailor Moon gets for its anniversaries or possibly just because some conductor at the Tokyo Philharmonic is a huge fan make me sad for other fandoms that don't get spoiled that this. (Which is to say, almost every other Japanese fandom that isn't a long-running video game franchise with a massively famous composer).  As to why, look no further than this comprehensive overhaul of Otome no Policy.
The original version, for comparison, is a cute and deeply "90s girls' anime" piece of bubblegum pop fluff about doing your best and being determined and energetic even in the face of periodic fleeting sorrows.  This arrangement starts with slow, sweet-tempered strings and woodwinds, but it swells with drums and brass as it goes along, modulating the tempo quicker and slower and quicker again, going through passages that could easily be from some film’s transcendent, triumphal march or a rousing theme from some lightly comic opera. It’s certainly the melody of Otome no Policy, but the overall impression is something much closer to “climactic segment from a version of Fantasia we never got.”
3: Reminiscence ~ Salamander and Loup-Garou and Father and Son, from the Heartcatch Precure movie: The latter of this pair is the one that really gets me, but it's a reprise of the former, and reprises always work best if you have the context of the first one, so have a listen to them both. (Also, I'm going to make some guesses about instruments in the descriptions below. Sorry if I get any wrong; I was in choir in school, not band.)
So, Reminiscence ~ Salamander and Loup-Garou plays over a flashback of the history of those two characters—the convivial but spite-filled Baron Salamander and his very young adoptive son/ward Loup-Garou (or Olivier, as the Cures will call him).  It uses a creepy harpsichord and vocal part for the darker scenes at the beginning, then transitions to a melancholy recorder as the flashback moves to more ambiguous scenes.
While I don't know if it was the composer's intention, the order of the title and the way the song has two distinct melodies makes me think of the harpsichord bit as "Salamander's part" and the recorder bit as "Olivier's part." That clear transition between the two melodies/moods echoes Salamander and Olivier's relationship problems—they're linked together, but on different pages, one following the other, out of sync with each others' wishes.
Father and Son, then, plays just as the climax is about to ramp up, as the two come to blows.  Olivier is desperate to stop the man he sees as his father from pursuing his world-ending goals; he loves the days they spent journeying together and doesn’t understand why they can’t just keep living that way.  Salamander, however, refuses to cede the vengeful bitterness he’s been nursing for centuries against the worlds and peoples who cast him out.
Accordingly, then, the piece reprises both halves of the Reminiscence theme, but this time, they're not played sequentially; instead, after a brief lead-in of the recorder part's melody (now on piano), the two melodies play together, both souped way, way up in orchestration and intensity for maximum heartbreak.  This is, after all, a scene that can’t possibly be resolved happily—if Salamander and Olivier could work things through on their own, there'd be no need for the Pretty Cure!—and the mournful brass and merciless march of the drumbeat emphasize that.
Do I feel a little awkward about having a piece of music used solely for a pair of male character movie OCs as my favorite piece of music in the entirety of the longest running magical girl franchise in history? Well, I, erm, um—look, how about you go listen to the immaculate thirteen-team theme music medley from the Hugtto All Stars movie and leave me here with my feels about this space dragon and his preteen artificial werewolf son. Thanks.
