Something that tripped me up the first time I watched SEL was what the fuck was Mika's (lain's sister's) deal? Like why was she even there, especially after the [redacted spoiler] reveal.
I'm thinking now she's only there to be a reference/equivalent to Touko, the shitty therapist from the psx game. Since in it Touko tries to get Lain to open up to their sessions by repeatedly telling her to "think of her as an older sister."

Four very brief scenes were cut from the beginning Episode 21 between the scriptwriting and storyboarding phases. They precede the scene of Kaji at the telephone booth, essentially taking the place of the flashback to Second Impact that opens the Director's Cut version of the Episode.
In the first, we see the Geofront, and Nerv Headquarters still in ruin, surrounded by Caution/No Tresspassing tape. Ritsuko, apparently still not recovered from her wounds sustained in Episode 18 more than a month prior, sees the severed parts of Eva-02, lifted from the underground lake by crane, and the collapsed Eva-00 at the center of the N2 blast crater.
RITSUKO: "What an awful thing."
IBUKI: "Both were severely damaged. We're continuing the repair work as our top priority, ma'am, but their injuries are in excess of the Hayflick limit."
In the second, we see Ritsuko and Ibuki once again, surveying the ruined command bridge at HQ. The script says, "Here, too, the ruined remains are a painful sight. Debris still lies scattered; the front monitor, still broken."
RITSUKO: "Nothing's going to be operational for a while yet, I suppose."
IBUKI: "Yes, ma'am."
RITSUKO: "And yet the Angels will still keep coming."
IBUKI: "Unit-01, and Shinji-kun, are our only hope, aren't they."
In the third, we see Eva-01 restrained in the Cage, her "fuselage still stained red". "On her breast, still lain bare, her red light-sphere - identical to an Angel's - can be seen". Asuka stands looking upon it, transfixed.
ASUKA: "Just what is an Eva?"
Finally, we return to the hospital room. Rei is asleep in bed. She opens her eyes. Beside her is Shinji, come to visit her. He's reading a book.
REI: "Ikari-kun?"
Shinji, noticing her -
SHINJI: "Sorry...I must've woken you..."
REI: "So you came back?"
SHINJI: "...yeah."
REI: "I see...that's good."
Calmly, quietly, as if vanishing away, Rei falls asleep once more.
We see Shinji's expression as he watches her, before cutting to Kaji at the roadside payphone. The only notable change to this scene is that, in the Original script, we hear Kaji introduce himself to Misato -
「葛󠄀城。オレだ」
This line was ultimately cut, although of course we hear it when Misato listens to his voicemail at the end of the episode.

I saw an anon ask about Serial Experiments Lain, and wanted to know if you've watched Evangelion. It is also okay if you'd rather not answer this, because I struggle a lot with religion too, I have to be careful about what I read or I will feel really weird for a few months.

hey anonymous, this one will be brief!
i have, but i haven:t seen the rebuilds; i liked the series + eoe a lot, though, when i saw it (i think it was my freshman year of college) -- i don:t think religion has much to do with it, or: i misled you if that was the impression i gave with the lain post; lain i don:t want to watch because it:s full of death information, and the only thing i think it has to offer is death information, and when you look at the acolytes of lain: they are gravid with death information, and they say: i am like lain, but they are just-mostly going opaque with death information <- this is my "haven:t watched it and know about lain through twitter people + the first episode" read + how i react to it (specifically: "if i die, i can make something happen;" it:s an active impulse).
evangelion though i mentally associate with "best girl" posts and people who want to be misato. i think it:s mostly because the "elemental message" of evangelion is just the same as the message of humanity. i like maya the most because of the scene in eoe.

Trigger : Ah, my long time predecessor is closing it's doors! The studio went out of business! Now who's gonna look after the characters or handle the animations with other studios!? Can't believe that Gainax is gone! All gone and I was too late! Seriously, don't blame on me, I didn't feel well when my old friend got serious file of getting a shutdown and now all of its employees have left the building. Well, at least I still have it's IPs.
Haruko : Of course, you're still living with the Gainax legacy. But you didn't forget about us, did you?
Trigger : Oh that's real funny haruko, you expect to believe that I would eventually see the studio Gainax throwing away like--(jumpscares) HUWAAAAH!!! Haruko Haruhara, is that you? W-W-What happened to you? Did all of you Gainax characters heard about the announcements. I mean...
Marcille : Did you all literally died on purpose?!

Shinji : I guess this is goodbye to the studio that we all loved and now it's history. You all guys heard me, right? Studio Gainax is history. Same goes to Akira Toriyama who is now history!
Asuka : Well, it was the most important studio opened in the 80s, but we had a lot of great times together. I mean, this studio was our home, we cherished this place as the greatest shows that has ever existed on Japanese TV. Gainax is a great, great, great, studio in all of Japan.
Rei : So, now that we don't have the studio anymore, it appears that each of the studios has gathered their own IPs from it's remains and the owner ship will be something to do with it's future. Studio Trigger would be shaped in memory of our beloved studio now gone to waste like Lain's studio that got bankrupted for sure.
Shinji : You're probably right about that. It's not just the studio, it's about the heart. So let me tell you this one Studio Khara, you changed us for real! It used to be about the Gainaxing, now the Gainaxing lived on. So that's on you, Khara.
Asuka : So now that we all did a bid farewell to the studio that we all worked at.
Misato : Wait a second, did somebody left a pack of cigarettes in the building?
Mamimi : (lighting up a cigarette) that was my last pack before I had the chance to quit smoking. You never seen a girl who smokes at an age like this, do ya?
*KABOOOM!*
Mamimi : Whoops. Yeah, I think that was my pack of cigarettes in there.
Misato : Hey, Mamimi-san. I'm gonna ask you this appropriately.
Mamimi : Oh, okay.
Misato : Good. (OUTBURSTS) WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING!? DID YOU LET ANYONE GO INSIDE THE BUILDING WHILE THE STUDIO HAS LOST EVERYTHING WE HAD!? ARE YOU TRYING TO GET US KILLED! SOMEBODY COULD'VE DIED IN THEIR!
Simon : I'm alive! But man that I used my robot to escape!
Mamimi : I guess that nobody was hurt in there, it could've been someone inside the building! Honestly, I-I-I swear! TH-This never happened!
Akko : I'D STILL LIKE YOU, SUCY!
*BOOM*
Mamimi : Okay. That wasn't totally my fault. At least, I still got my dignity. Well, you know all the rules, never smoke at a work place.
Misato : Well, there goes our former.
Shinji : Wise choice.
Asuka : I feel like the other studios have studio'd remaining IPs, totally makes a statement about the economys in the industry. It's only the anime industry that is part of the mangaka industry, who's gonna make everyone popular in Japan?
Lain Iwakura : Hey, guys. I forgot to give all the data back to Gainax since the studio is about to go out of business---And there goes the legend. Well, great. There goes another studio going out of business.
Rei : I know.
