Following brunch, we made our way to the Bosque de Chapultepec to take a nice long walk there. It’s referred to as the lung of Mexico City, in part because the park is shaped like a lung, but also because it provides a respite from the air pollution that is just part of the city.
It’s a beautiful park, with plenty of trails for walking, and the jacaranda trees were absolutely gorgeous. While we didn’t make it up to the Castillo Chapultepec--it’s a bit of a hike up a hill and the afternoon was getting late--but we got a glimpse of it, and instead we took a moment to sit in the Audiorama and relax while watching others sketching, napping, or quietly talking amongst themselves.
It’s a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon, and once we were done we took a short walk over to the design/bookstore La Incredible where I found a gorgeous cookbook in Spanish specifically about Mexico City, and I’m really looking forward to cooking from it.

We spent our last full day in Mexico City exploring La Condesa, a neighborhood that is very close to the Bosque de Chapultepec. It’s definitely a hip, gentrified neighborhood filled with expats, but we enjoyed a wonderful brunch at the unassuming Mari Gold while we were there, so I’m not complaining. Our waiter was super-helpful in walking us through the menu, offering his suggestions--all which we took because they looked amazing--and even giving us some background on some of the beers on their menu.
Along with Bósforo , this was definitely among the most creative meals we had during our stay. We started with croquetas of potato and tapioca, served with an herb chutney and a jalapeno sauce. I was not expecting to love this as much as I did, but wow it was fantastic.
The cucumber salad was also a winner: tossed in a yogurt dressing, it was light and refreshing and packed with herbs, and I’m absolutely going to take some inspiration from it when making cucumber salads this summer.
Finally, the sea bass crudo on a bed of yogurt, paired with jicama, and dressed with a chili oil and some chapulines was utterly mind-blowing. I was also super-inspired by how good this was, and given that I like to make one raw fish dish a week, I’m going to derive some inspiration from this dish as well to add to my rotation of dishes.
HIghly recommend this place, but definitely get a reservation for brunch. We ended up waiting a bit for a table and so we walked around the neighborhood for 20 minutes, but the wait was worth it.
