Podcast #183: Sleep Has Her House (2017) & Slow Cinema
Welcome to Episode #183 of The Swampflix Podcast. For this episode, Brandon, James, Britnee, and Hanna discuss the highbrow, low-energy art of “slow cinema” – ranging from the self-distributed microbudget cult film Sleep Has Her House (2017) to Chantal Akerman’s landmark feminist classic Jeanne Dielman (1975), recently cited by Sight & Sound as “the greatest film of all time”. 00:00…

“El horror del patriarcado en los cuerpos de las mujeres bajo el cine de las mejores”
El auge de las plataformas para ver cine y series en casa ha generado un apogeo de las listas de clasificación. Diversos medios se prestan para publicarlas desde el gancho de las mejores 10, las mejores 20 o las mejores 100 películas de todos los tiempos, incluso separadas por géneros: las mejores películas románticas, de terror, con contenido LGBTQIA2+, tras un largo etcétera. Sin duda, se…

Episode 50 1/2: Listener Stories #6 Photodump
1). After two months of Aly texting The Happy Valley Dream Survey , they finally responded! Even creepier, they knew who we were BY FIRST NAMES!?!?
2). In true Aly fashion, Aly asks The Happy Valley Dream Survey to come on the podcast.
3.) The actual Happy Valley Dream Survey phone number has been randomly calling at odd hours when we are all asleep. Cowards.
4). La Casa Del Diablo en Cienaga Magdalena is a haunted house in Columbia where the devil is rumored to reside.
5.) Anyone who enters the house either dies in the house or has bad luck befall them! A man once went in the house and was hit by a car and killed immediately after he left!
6.) Photo of the Driver’s side back tire of listener Dawn S.’s car following an accident that she should not have survived. A cross and heart appear to be drawn in tree sap and scratches.

well for starters here's lists totaling over 2,000 films directed by women that you can peruse through right now
my favorite films directed by women are, in chronological order, shoes (1916), merrily we go to hell, cleo from 5 to 7, le bonheur, wanda, a new leaf, the heartbreak kid, jeanne dielman, mikey and nicky, not a pretty picture, i am wanda, a question of silence, illusions, losing ground, children of a lesser god, the piano, antonia's line, the watermelon woman, gasman, compensation, but i'm a cheerleader, the gleaners and i, la cienaga, fat girl, morvern callar, little miss sunshine, after the wedding, wendy and lucy, fish tank, pariah, the loneliest planet, your sister's sister, obvious child, cameraperson, certain women, faces places, lady bird, portrait of a lady on fire, the assistant, clemency, and i'm your man
a couple of films by women that i saw recently and really loved were totém, a thousand and one, days of happiness, alma's rainbow, drylongso, birth/rebirth, chocolat, next sohee, and four daughters.
i honestly want to recommend one film directed by a man but starring women and that's westward the women which FUCKING ROCKS.

Yes, they were, but honestly? I can't remember right now. Anyone? // some i remember specifically from 2019 was “la cienaga where I remember you” and Lauren showing up front row to the Latin Grammys later that year when Camila couldn’t attend (where nominees/winners sit). Unfortunately Shawmila bulldozed its way through mid 2019 and everything got a lot quieter
Oh right. I forgot that

The Carnival Party Scene in La Cienaga
The carnival party scene, fully fleshed out with loud music and camera cuts, is a key example of interactions with indigenous people in La Cienega. In this scene, Jose sexually harasses Isabel despite previously disparaging her. More importantly, Perro “avenges her by beating Jose up violently” and showing that “evidently, the indigenous people will not put up forever with such blatant displays of disrespect” (Hillman 160). This strong show of assertiveness exhibits how, while they may sneer at the indigenous people, Mecha’s family are the ones in the wrong and actually deserve the scorn they express for others. The film elements further contribute to the impact of this scene. In this scene, the energy of the film escalates with the loud music which also makes it difficult to hear the characters’ words. As a result, viewers end up focusing on the characters’ actions and expressions. Instead of the music making the party a joyous environment, it ramps up the chaotic atmosphere. The constant switching of camera angles also adds to the turmoil of the scene, bafflingly preventing the viewer from focusing on one subject. Consequently, the carnival scene becomes a crucial example of the disrespectful abuse of the indigenous people.
