I can't wait until the tankoban of these chapters come out and people get to read these emotional gut punches one after the other without any time to process them in between.
People can complain about the schedule as long as they want, but I need those off weeks to properly be an adult without breaking down about the emotional devastation I just experienced.

You know I was wondering if Crocodile ever did have any kind of involvement with the Revolutionary Army in secret (lest the Government finds out and revokes his Shichibukai status), what kind of involvement would that even have been
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now, with both the Vegapunk/Ohara flashback and Kuma's flashback, it's being made very clear to us that the Revolutionary Army was broke as hell 22 years ago. Like the fact that this has been brought up twice now in a relatively short span of time is interesting to me, that's usually a sign it's not an unimportant plotpoint
But you know who would have had money to help fund the Army
A funny little warlord who would eventually go and build a fucking casino to run for funsies. A warlord who had to give the Government some of his Pirating Income to keep his warlord-status
Like Crocodile hated the Government anyways so why not help fund the Revolutionary Army in secret, out of spite if for no other reason
Vaguely related, but I keep on remembering this scene (post-Enies Lobby), which at first glance just seems like a basic Lore Dump
But then there's the
Tumblr media
"Yet..."
(Or "however", she says "no ni" in Japanese and you could translate that in many ways, I would probably have gone with "however" but that wouldn't have fit into the speechbubble)
Mind you, the conversation just kind of ends there, next we see Garp realize he probably shouldn't have mentioned Dragon infront of such a massive audience, so wherever that "yet" was going to lead to we will never find out, because Oda conveniently changed the subject before we got to it
And you know. Like yes, Robin could be just expressing her shock over finding out that the leader of the Revolutionary Army had a child with someone
But also, Robin was a part of an organization that was trying to overthrow one of the founding countries of the World Government in an explicit attempt to go against said Government (compared to like, Blackbeard, who currently wants to make Fullalead into a "pirate country" that's a part OF the World Government)
Like you don't have to be a genius to look at Crocodile's ultimate goals and compare that to what Dragon is doing and find a few similarities here and there maybe
(Also like, Crocodile's equivalent in Romancing SaGa 2 is meant to be Wagnas, the queer-coded leader of the Seven Heroes (whom the OG Shichibukai are based on) who "hoped to help the world". You know, an interesting detail and all.)
Not to mention, during the time Robin spent with Baroque Works, if Crocodile was ever in contact with the Revolutionary Army at all, considdering she has the ability to easily spy on people and that she didn't trust Crocodile one bit, it wouldn't be unsurprising if she ever spied on Crocodile and/or just overheard a phone call or knew about Crocodile having secret spending habits or something
(Mind you, I'm not saying "she knew" Crocodile was involved with the Revolutionaries, more that she might've been Suspecting Things, that "yet" being about her connecting the dots while unsure if her conclusion was right or not)
Of course Crocodile's plans can't have been Dragon Approved by any means, especially considdering the Army had been looking for Robin for over 10 years (pre-timeskip)
Tumblr media
Four years of which were with Crocodile. Like if he was FULLY allied with the Army and KNEW they were looking for Robin, surely he would've called Dragon and been like "hey I found the kid from Ohara, wanna come hang out" or something. But no, he had bigger plans and kept Robin a secret from the Revolutionaries and the Government alike
Also like, I have seen people question why the Revolutionaries weren't involved with Alabasta's rebellion at all, and "Oda hadn't come up with the Revolutionaries yet at the time of writing" (/"OP was meant to end at Alabasta at one point so there would've been no reason to introduce the subplot at that point") aside Between Baroque Works being a secret organization working undercover (thus the Army might not have been aware of the civil war being manufactured), the framing of the King making him look bad and very much the type of monarch that deserved to be overthrown in the Army's eyes, and Crocodile maybe lying through his teeth about what was happening in the country... Yeah, the Army's lack of involvement with Alabasta suddenly makes sense
EDIT Minor addition: Just realized that because Crocodile was technically working for the Government, if the Revs ever did send forces to participate in Alabasta's civil army and taking down the throne, the Government could've easily ordered Crocodile to step in to stop the rebellion and take down the Revolutionaries, right? Because he was supposed to be on the Government's side, right? And surely the Army wouldn't have wanted to fight against Crocodile if they were secretly allied (Croc's secret betrayal aside), and if Crocodile refused to fight the Revs the Government could've seen that as a reason to revoke his Shichibukai rights (which wouldn't be great if they wanted to keep Crocodile in a position where he could fund the Army?). So it could've also been a case of it being for the best for everyone's sake to let this one play out "naturally"
But my point is
I'm just deeply intriqued by these little details and wonder if I'm Actually Masterfully Connecting The Dots Like a True Genius or just seeing a pattern where there's none. Like this is far from confirming the theory, I'm just saying, the pieces do kinda fit together do they not

One piece 1098
Oda.. What do you mean you've created a girl who escaped slavery then thrown her back to the hell and worse, for TWO years, being kidnapped right before the day that she eagerly looked forward to. This chapter is going to haunt me for days
Regardless of her small screentime, Ginny is not a nobody. She's essentially the mastermind of God Valley incident. She saved lives including Kuma's and never left his side - wishing to be his 'big sis' after Iva left. The feeling transformed to love as they grew older, but she had always been there to protect him. But thinking about it, Kuma couldn't reciprocate it the same way did he.
Ginny was Kuma's opposite - he'd hesitate, she'd jump into action. She knew she loved kuma and proposed him. She saw him being imprisoned and went to bite back the King. She was bringing a balance to Kuma's life that fell apart after she left. Ginny came to save Kuma time and time again, but in the two years of her kidnap, Kuma gave up on her.
"we raised hell to free you, Kumachi", opposing "I thought I'd never see you again." There's a clear difference between their mindsets.
Kuma became violent yes. But so far we haven't seen any hint that he teleported to Mariejeoise. There's already a record set by Fisher Tiger so it wasn't beyond the realm of possibilities, but Kuma was probably trapped by his trauma and abusive upbringing. He didn't think Ginny would be alive because his mother died.
But Ginny never gave up, she had remained firm with her convictions till the end. She loved a person and the child had genes of her abuser, but she carried the baby and gave birth to her, named her. Ginny was not a person who'd abandons someone.
She realized that sunlight would kill her, but she set sail alone and correctly navigated back to the church. Back to the home they once used to live in before they joined the revolutionaries. The place and its happy memories that probably never left her mind in the two years. The church is the place where she found her solace after her childhood slavery. She wanted her daughter to grow there, she wanted it to be her own grave.
What Ginny gave up on was Kuma's love. She knew he'd worry, she looked hideous and felt that she has no right to face him. "Don't you dare come here" - How prude of her to bloat about wanting to marry him, make him happy, to protect him - and then leave for two years and return with a baby? She knew he'd still love her, but she had no right to expect anything from him, for herself or her child.
"Tell the kind Kumachi, that I've always always loved him."
Kuma had always saved civilians from their miseries. She appreciated Kuma's benevolence.
Tumblr media
But it doesn't make Ginny any less kind. For she had something Kuma lacked in his younger days. To fight tooth and nail for the ones that are important, and to never give up.

Just occurred to me that maybe the reason Kuma's flashback is covering so much space and time and fully focused on his personal lived experience while skipping over God Valley and Rev Army is that these are his memories as understood by Bonney when she was in Vegapunk's lab. She watched Kuma's memories to understand why he did what he did so of course she skips over that stuff, it's not important to her, it's just context for the choices that directly impact her— Kuma leaving to become a government weapon.

I don’t know is when we’ll cut back to him but given how we are suffering in Borsalino’s plot line I greatly appreciate you Egghead family art. Your art is fantastic but the way you draw those three and their adventures/mis-adventures is a joy
The entirety of the Egghead family (with the new Issho addition) makes me so so happy cause I genuinely feel so strongly for ALL the characters! And they are all so fun and the tragedy of the canon fuels my need for wholesome content.
Im glad people have been so positively receptive to my crazy found family silliness (and also this new Issho ship) and I hope I can continue making this content (i.e the canon doesn’t mess me up something fierce)

Y'know, I think that was the first backstory where I cried every chapter. I usually only cry at the end, but nope, I was crying the entire time.
I really enjoyed the Kuma Flashback/Non-Stop Trauma Train, but I am ready to get back to present day Egghead, there's so much going on!

one piece chapter 1095 spoilers
holy fuck ODA COOKED HARD THIS TIME HE BETTER CALM DOWN
this chapter, more lore is revealed. We have infos about Kuma, the CDs, Garling and there revos. Let's go:
-the chapter starts with Saturn saying that Bonney's stab didn't harm him. He removes the sword out of his chest and glares at Bonney, making her and Sanji fall back (unclear if it's conquerors haki or not)
-Kizaru is laying on the ground, he seems to be injured. Saturn is VERY disappointed in him this time
-Saturn tries to stomp on Luffy but Franky extends his hand and saves him in time. so instead he goes after Bonney who yells at him that he killed her father
-okay fellas, THIS IS WHERE IT GETS REAL GOOD! We see a young Kuma and Bonney, he is talking to her about Nika and sings the rythm of them drums of liberation to her and they start dancing 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
-fast forward 47 YEAR before that, someone leaked the infos about Kuma's blood test that he belongs to a very special race called the Buccaneers, his mother ends up getting killed in the process
-So basically, the Buccaneers are a race of people who have committed a TERRIBLE CRIME by world government standards (and knowing how the world government works, we know that would be some cringe ass cope crime against the whiny CDs but we have yet to find out what it is)
-We see a child Kuma and his father, his father sings the drums of liberation rythm to him and they start dancing to it, but then some guard shoots Kuma's father because he was "too loud", killing him as well
-the tennryubito were holding a "hunger game" styled competition where they bring members of every race the deem "problematic" and force them to fight each other to the death. And surprise surprise, they force a child Kuma to partake.
-the death match takes place on an inhabited island called "god valley" that is unaffiliated with the world government and is doomed to have it's whole population wiped off along the troublesome prisoners because they had the audacity to name their island a name containing the word "god"
-the king of the island tries to defend his island but Garling Figarland (who looks like a younger shanks but with a cresent shaped hair) kills him (we see lots of tennryubito swooning over him as well)
-the news that a child buccaneer (AKA Kuma) was trying to escape and was captured spread around, and we see Kuma being dragged back. Two kids approach him who are then revealed to be Ivankov and a girl eating meat called Ginny/Jinny, they comment that his size is HUGE (which is a special trait among the Buccaneers having giants like traits) and tell him that they will work together to survive
-Saturn is present as well on god valley, he looks like a boomer just like always does

The worst part about trying to figure out what Crocodile's deal is that because he's so fucking irredeemably evil in Alabasta... Like... Yeah he's just irredeemably evil. Like I love him but he did cause countless casualties, a ton of pain and suffering and literally attempted to blow up a million people
Like no amount of theoretical "trying to do it to save his son from the Government" or "trying to stop the Government from hurting anyone else" or just "doing it for the greater good" is going to make him any less of a mass murderer
But also Robin absolutely 100% helped with all of that shit simply because she wanted to read the Poneglyph for herself.
No amount of her intending to betray Crocodile from the begining and sabotaging his plans erases the fact that Robin also caused countless people to starve to death and die in the civil war. Her sabotages only succeeded out of sheer luck, and only spared the lives of the people at the final battle. She has the blood of countless innocents on her hands. Because she wanted to read history.
But her crimes were swept under the rug because she has a sad backstory and her sabotages worked out just at the nick of time by sheer dumb luck
So Croc??? Just??? Is there a chance??? At all???
But also he did literally intend to sell Buggy into slavery
Like, fuck Buggy, but jesus
What's also killing me is that we like. Don't know what Luffy thinks of Crocodile right now. Which really is like. The thing that will decide how we, as the readers, are supposed to feel about Crocodile. Luffy is our POV
Like we don't know what Luffy's opinion of Crocodile is after he helped save Luffy (and spared Ace once) during the Summit War. Like Luffy clearly fucking hated the man in Impel Down and the two interactions they had during the War weren't like positive (in the sense that Luffy himself didn't think of the interactions as particularly positive. Defending Whitebeard from being attacked once and then being like "wait what HIM?!" when Crocodile defended Ace. To be fair, in the midst of the chaos, there wasn't much time to spend on Pondering On Such Things because Ace needed to be saved, and Oda goes out of his way to not show us what's going on inside Luffy's head, because it's all meant to be out in the open anyways. Regardless, these weren't like "yay it's Crocodile! :)" moments for Luffy is what I mean)
But also Luffy was very grateful of Law for saving his life and was willing to put his trust into Law for their alliance- of course, they weren't explicitly enemies to begin with, rivals at most, but still. Luffy respects those who help him.
But also Luffy grew during the timeskip. Like he's not that clueless anymore (like he finally understands Hancock is in love with him etc), and similarly Luffy gets that Buggy is an absolute loser now. But also Buggy did also help save Luffy's life (even if it was by accident), and while IDK if Luffy is aware of that, I don't think that helped improve Luffy's impression of Buggy
So like. The fuck does Luffy think of Crocodile, at this moment? Even with the Cross Guild reveal, he didn't even really comment on Croc and just focused his energy on being confused about Buggy being "the leader" of CG. IDK it feels almost intentional or something, that we don't know what Luffy thinks?? Especially since we did get Zoro's opinion on Mihawk in the situation?? Or am I delulu?? (Sidenote. I'd love to know what Robin would have to say about Crocodile helping save Luffy's life. What Jinbei might think of the final words Crocodile left him with before blasting them out of Akainu's reach. But mainly just Robin's thoughts)
Like IDK my best guess would be that Luffy still hates Crocodile just the same but is like grossed out by technically owing him one??? In the classic
Tumblr media
-kinda way, you know? And that he'd be just kinda confused about it?
Because I can't fucking imagine Luffy being like "oh we're cool now" with Crocodile, let alone "Yay Crocodile :) He saved my life!". But also like. Luffy does kind of owe Croc one. Kind of. And Luffy is usually very respectful of that kind of thing. Aaaaaaaa???
(Also does. Does Luffy even know it was Crocodile who yeeted him and Jinbei out of Akainu's reach to begin with. 'Cause he was unconcious. Knocked the fuck out. Does. Does Luffy even know. Did anybody tell him???)
I just.
There's the reasonable part of me that knows Crocodile is an irredeemable evil dickbag and everything he has ever said and done up to the most recent chapters support that. He is too far gone.
And then there's the absolutely delulu part that loves a tragic villian who gets a heartwrenching redemption that's looking for any fucking sign that could indicate Crocodile could maybe be one

The Problem With Kuma
So as we delve through the flashback that tells the story of the Tyrant Kuma, there is something that's been bugging me, something it took me a while to figure out.
It wasnt Bad... But there was something that made it feel off in a way that other flashbacks in One Piece never really did.
And I finally figured out what it was.
The essence of a One Piece flashback, is not too surprisingly that it shows us how a character got to the current point, how they became the person they are in the present. Luffy and his crew, Law, the entire sun pirates, vivi and so many others.
On paper Kuma's backstory feels like it follows this trend... But there is one, huge, massive difference that makes the flashback feel... Well, to put it bluntly, rather than explaining how Kuma came to be, it instead completely rewrites his entire personality and removes every rough edge he had.
In pretty much every other OP flashback, we get a defining moment, usually a death, that served as the characters turning point, the moment they changed into someone very different than who they were before, or they doubled down on a preexisting trait.
zoro losing kuina in the most anticlimactic way possible, Nami losing bellemere, chopper losing Kiriluk, law losing Corazon, Robin losing everyone, the sun pirates losing fisher tiger and how his final confession completely changed jinbei's entire outlook on human/fishman relations.
Tumblr media
With Kuma, there are a lot of moments that FEEL like they should have been this moment where his soul was hardened into someone completely different than how he used to be, wheter it be losing Ginny, or learning Bonney had the same disease as her mother, which made him abandon the revolutionaries, selling his soul to the marines for Bonney's treatment... But the moment never really comes.
Tumblr media
The problem with Kuma is that he never really has a moment where he becomes the person we were introduced to him as. as the man who coldly told the gathered crew at thriller bark "What a shame" as he tried to wipe them from the face of the world.
The simple reality is that after everything we learn about him in his own flashback, this ultimately feels out of character. Kuma was introduced as a man willing to do the governments will and had hardned his soul to do so... but still possessed a very distinct sense of honor.
In the Kuma we get to see in the flashbacks, this man never existed, which just makes the way he acted at thriller bark look downright bizarre.
Tumblr media
Equally bizarre is the way his sending the straw hats to the corners of the earth is portrayed as a spur of the moment decision, rather than a calculated one.
Fans have speculated for years, and years, and years that Kuma had to have planned this out in great detail, because of a whole variety of factors, like how he knew exactly where to send them to let them each hone their craft, and the location of places such as the sky island nami was sent to(which changes location).
The reality is that this isnt a plan that he should have been able to wing it. The logical course of events is that Kuma decided on this course of action after seeing the limits of the straw-hat pirates at thriller bark.
Instead it was a decision made on the fly.
Ultimately what it comes down to, is that pre timeskip kuma, and the one we got when his backstory was revealed, are effectively two different characters, and not in a good way. Not in a sense where we got to see the true man that was hinted at all along, but instead in such a way that they dont really fit as two halves of a set.
I Think that when Oda was planning Kuma's backstory, he probably planned to make him a much more grey character, with a good core, but one who very much sold his soul for his daughter's future, and probably also one who had a dark side to him, the reason why he was truly feared as "The Tyrant" Kuma.
Tumblr media
And i think that is best excemplified into the moment that in the finished product earned him his nickname, the tyrant, as he desicively destroyed his predeseccor and wiped out his fleet.
It's a footnote, barely worth mentioning as he killed a very annoying and not particularily interesting character.
This could have been a way, way more interesting scene, if his death had been when Kuma overthrew him in the first place, and we got to see him stalk the palace, wiping out soldier after soldier, before finally reaching the actual target.
I've seen some argue that the point is that the government just created his backstory wholecloth as a propaganda backstory for one of their weapons, and while that might make logical sense, the way it's presented is not compelling. Instead it lessens Kuma as a character.
The reality is that Kuma as he has become now, is a very boring character. Lot's of interesting stuff happens around him, but kuma himself is just... a swell fellow, to whom HORRIBLE stuff constantly happens.
All the interesting players are the ones around him, Dragon, iva, ginny, bonney, the straw hat pirates, and so on.
The big problem with Kuma is that his big flashback doesnt explain how he came to be, it instead shows us that the aspects that made him interesting and stand out from the usual one piece character was never really a thing to begin with.

Chapter 1100 was too much (chapter spoilers below)
"Thank you for being born" *sobs* (there's some parallelism to Ace here, in my brain, but mostly a child born from a hideous crime is still loved...)
the around the world seeing everyone! Blackbeard *grr*, Ace and Sabo on the same page *sobs*, Hi, Hancock *waves*, Koby!
why Kuma seemed so obedient before
best dad Kuma; also that man is too good for the world he's living in
I see why Bonney stabbed Saturn
