Can the life dominated by desire? High Society Review
Tumblr media
After reading the cast and plot introduction of this movie, the husband-and-wife team who are greedy for profit is very interesting. The actress Soo-ae has performed very well in many revenge-oriented Korean dramas. In addition, Park Hae-il is Cheese King. I watched an ancient costume film "Mountain City of Southern Han Dynasty", and I was deeply impressed by the emperor he played in the film. When I first watched it, I didn’t know it was a 19-year-old movie. After watching it, I found that this movie is far more than that restricted segment, because this movie does describe a lot of inner discussions, and it also makes people reflect on the goal of life. what? Soo Ae plays an artist in the film, but from her domineering manner to the decoration manufacturer, it is not difficult to find that she is a demanding person and a bit mean-speaking, while her husband, Park Hae-il, seems to be a gentle university professor, But when they were invited to appear on TV, they deliberately disagreed and wanted to be famous. The two were like an old married couple who had no spark at home, and only felt that they wanted to climb up and have power and money. Xiu Ai works in an art museum, thinking that if she performs well, she will have a chance to be promoted to the position of curator. Although she has tried her best, she is threatened because of a sex video with her ex-boyfriend. Of course, we can also say that it is okay for her to cheat I'm so sorry. And Park Hae-il became famous because of an accidental incident on the street, and was recruited by the political party as the new representative of public opinion. He looks sincere but actually enjoys it. The female assistants get together. Although they both knew about each other's infidelity, why didn't they divorce? The control group in the play is a couple with power. One is Chairman Han of the consortium that owns the art museum, and the other is the current curator Luo Meilan. The traces are hung on the wall of the home as if they are works of art, and they also say that art is simply shit. This kind of person actually owns an art gallery…   And his wife Luo Meilan, although she is the so-called curator, also uses the company to buy paintings to launder money. She also understands that her husband is looking for women everywhere, but why are they still together? It is for these powers and money. No matter how fierce the quarrel is, they will not divorce and transfer the property they have in their hands……It is extremely ironic and sad, is this kind of life happy? So Soo Ae and Park Hae Il finally chose to face their selfish ugliness. Although threatened, Soo Ae boldly released the sex video in front of everyone, faced her own mistakes, and returned to the self who loves art. Park Hae Il also He became a civic representative on his own, and provided the consortium's account books to the prosecutor, clearing his identity. At the end of the whole movie, there is still a feeling of endless aftertaste. The choice of life depends on oneself, how to change one's future, or what is the goal one pursues. Maybe the pursuit of money interests at the beginning is extremely dirty in the process Dirty, but when I really got it, I found that I lost other more precious things. The scale of the whole movie is really big, and it is also a standard Korean movie style, and it is worth watching for realists. 인연 [in-yun], it means "providence" or "fate". It's an 인연, if two strangers even walk by each other in the street and their clothes accidentally brush. Because it means there must have been something between them, in their past lives. If two people get married, they say it's because there have been 8000 layers of 인연. Over 8000 lifetimes.

Ballerina: A Cinematic Recital of Revenge
Tumblr media
Ballerina, an action-packed film, takes a unique approach to the revenge genre by incorporating ballet elements into its narrative. The story kicks off with Okju, who appears to be on leave from a high-end security firm, thwarting a robbery with canned vegetables. However, her life takes a dark turn when her friend Min-hee, known as "Ballerina," commits suicide and leaves a note asking for vengeance. Director Lee Chung-hyun, known for his previous work on The Call, creates Ballerina, a cinematic masterpiece (at least to me) that serves as the platform for a revenge story. Determined to convey a sense of recital or performance art, Lee successfully emphasized factors such as cinematography, production design, and music, to the point where the title tracks directed by GRAY were titled after ballet terms such as "Adagio" or "Coda" aligning with the film's theme. A standout feature is the virtual spaces designed for the main characters—Okju, Min-hee, and Choi (the antagonist). The art director Kim Min-hye utilized symbolic elements to convey emotions, such as warmth in Okju's lonely house, fragility in Min hee's space decorated with a fish tank, and humility in Choi's house adorned with antique pieces and artworks. Ballerina addresses dark themes of assault, grooming, and human trafficking, highlighting a woman's fight for justice. The film relies on striking visuals and cinematography, using fluorescent lights and vibrant colors in flashback scenes to contrast the harshness of the overall story. Okju's character development and strength lead to a satisfying ending, with the villain meeting a painful demise at her hands.

Past Lives (2023) - Celine Song
Tumblr media
Past Lives is a 2023 Korean movie written and directed by Celine Song. A movie that reaches for all the subtle and inexpressible feelings in a modern relationship, in the intertwined lives of Hae Sung, Nora and Arthur.
The idea of cycle is what I can connect in the movie most. Its the repetition, every 12 years, Hae Sung and Nora meet, linger and break. I have felt this with my life, there is some magic to “12 years”, same people and same things and same places comes back to me every 12 years - Its strange if you are in it!
The movie travels in to metaphysics with “In-Yan” and 8000 layers of attachment from past lives. Nora suggests some intriguing past-life possibilities that they might be say, “birds sitting on the same branch on a particular morning”, “a married couple constantly fighting” etc.. This really elevates the movie and the audience out of mundane.
The subtle and stirring musical bits placed all over the movie is pretty warm. One of the striking staging is of the scene, where childhood Sung and childhod Nora, say good bye to each other and takes different paths. Nora takes a steep slope, depicting her hunger to achieve in literature, while Sung takes a pretty flat path and he remains flat throughout the rest of his life.
There is a common belief that 21st century world is flat and world is just a huge cosmopolitan city. These are the movies which reminds us that it is not. Nora says to Arthur that she feels “more Korean than Korean” when she is with Sung.
Arthur is also trying to learn Korean. Then comes the greatest despair scene of the movie, and Arthur goes,
“You dream in a language which I can’t understand.. Its like there is this whole place inside of you, where I can’t go..”
How many times in our lives we have felt that despair, even with our dearest ones? that there are depths and dreams in the other person which cannot be scooped ever? This movie takes a scoop of that and gives it for a taste.
Arthur was my favorite, the way he subtly expressed his helplessness, the way he asks the genuine questions about fate and chance. At a point, towards the end of movie, he kind of switches to a third person perspective of the situation and he feels happy for being a part of the love story - “I never imagined that I will be part of something like this in my life” .. of course we can interpret this dialogue in both ways.
The final shot of the movie, where Sung leaves in a car to airport, he goes out of the frame and we see rapidly receding background, we feel the time passing moment by moment with all its complications in space. The time, the cycles of time, the time on which our lives are staged!
This movie will linger with me for a while…
Thanks to my friend Surendhar for recommending this movie!
