Korean Drama: A Craze In India | Culture Curry | HT Lifestyle
“Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films” These golden words were spoken by the Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho. He quoted this when his film ‘Parasite’ created history by being the first Korean film to win the Oscars in 2019. It was after this time, people became curious to know more about Korean cinema. Let’s see why these shows are getting more popular by the day in India.

The Rise and Fall of Murtasim Khan
Tere Bin - I have been saying that post E20 this show has stopped making sense, logic has gone out of the window, the character development has stopped, the relationship has not grown and my IQ has dropped to negative.
I have long stayed away from Indian soaps and Pakistani dramas which have had nonsensical tracks, toxic leads, misogyny and medieval plot lines. My only hook to Tere Bin was Wahaj Ali’s performance as Murtasim and him softening towards Meerab played by Yumna Zaidi. Of the 30 odd Pak dramas I have watched, I haven’t seen such sizzling chemistry amongst the leads.
Tumblr media
Meerab was already the worst written female lead in all the dramas I have watched - Indian, Pakistani, Korean, Western. You can read my rant on her in my earlier posts on this blog.
I wasn’t first taken in by Murtasim Khan as a lead cause he showed the typical toxic traits that most sub continent dramas focus on - rich, arrogant, alpha male, controlling, egoistic and worst here with serious anger management issues. I’m sorry but using physical violence, even a slap is simply not acceptable.
Tumblr media
But I’m willing to tolerate them, if they show a good development arc , redemption and acknowledgment of their misgivings, and IF the actor is stellar. Murtasim’s arc and Wahaj Ali’s performance excelled on both accounts. Until E46, Murtasim was the only person trying to make the forced marriage work, he accepted it and put his heart and soul to abide by it, his growth into softening as a person, falling in love, empathising with her plight, tolerating her arrogance and stupid antics (where she put his life in danger, not once but twice), trusting her no matter what (even though there was proof she helped his sister elope with his arch enemy), understanding her point of view, giving her benefit of the doubt, were all on display for us to fall in love with. Wahaj being ace at romance also added to us loving Murtasim.
Tumblr media
Murtasim in Wahaj’s vision was in stark contrast to what Nooran had written. Wahaj said in an interview that Murtasim was logical and they tried every bit to make him less toxic.
youtube
All that the audience was holding their breath for, was for Meerab to realise her love for Murtasim and then see their journey together. Murtasim supporting her law career, Meerab helping him open up from his conservative mindset and together fixing their flaws , their marriage and grow as a couple. It’s not hard to write a positive arc for two hot headed, egoistic people who realise their mistakes and make amends. The audience will forgive the toxicity if they see positivity, growth and genuine repentance.
But Nooran the writer is the villain of this story - we have all established now that she is twisted in her head and seeks some kind of sadistic pleasure in making her female leads look bad; but derives even more pleasure in kicking the male lead from the cliff after elevating him to be one of the best male leads in dramas.
Tumblr media
Male leads remained toxic and we never warmed up to them. Some got redemption arcs and we made some peace. Consent and agency were missing for the female leads and it frustrated us. Handful of shows started reflecting on showing strong female leads and we naturally lapped up those shows. But Tere Bin showed what no other drama did before - the biggest downfall of a male lead in television history.
The amount of toxicity that has been brought into Murtasim’s character in the last 12 episodes is beyond my imagination. How can a guy who kept harping about consent force his wife, that was clearly the original track because nothing makes sense post E47. If assuming they consummated in anger but with mutual consent , the separation makes no sense. Her pining for his love makes zero sense in both scenarios. Post the separation he is doubting that she ran away with her male college friend. The trust issues this lead couple has and their inability to have a single meaningful conversation in 58 episodes is totally baffling.
His need to find Meerab is not because he loves her, but because it’s matter of his family’s reputation. He is announcing to the whole world that she ran away with a man without any evidence. The worst straw for me is that he gives Haya a complete free pass. This is the same woman who has physically harmed his wife (even when it was a false pregnancy) and is obsessed with him to the extent she has left no stone unturned to destroy his and Meerab’s relationship. He is now willingly marrying her - there is no pressure from anyone to make him do so. For all the talks about Meerab will be my wife till end of my lifetime and I will live my life in memory of her love - his lifetime surely lasted a few months/years (honestly I’m confused what the timeline is now between Meerab leaving, giving birth and Murtasim getting married to Haya).
For a supposedly logical and non toxic character, this U Turn has impacted the fans like no other and rightly so. You cannot mislead an audience to love a character and dump garbage all over him. That’s not bad writing , that just pure evil sadism.
Kudos to Wahaj for pouring his heart and soul in Murtasim, but post E46 even his acting is reflective of the fact that he no longer believes in his character. The difference is evident.
Murtasim Khan was set to charm his way into every woman’s heart (and he did given how much popularity this show got and the discussions we have seen on TV and social media). This is full credit to Wahaj’s superior acting skills and on screen charm. But he ended up now as the worst villain in the history of television thanks to Nooran’s impeccable sadistic writing skills.
I will be eternally grateful for discovering Wahaj through Tere Bin, it was always a trash show and I didn’t have any expectations from it, but it was my guilty pleasure for Wahaj and Yumna’s fine onscreen chemistry. However, the fall of Murtasim Khan has been immensely jarring to watch and now Tere Bin has has done permanent , irreparable damage to the joy and pleasure it had brought viewers worldwide.

The Best Thanksgiving TV Episodes
https://ift.tt/2IIxzXR
Halloween and Christmas are objectively the two best American holidays. One allows for us all to indulge in our gothic, spooky side, while the other comes along with family and cheer (forced or otherwise). There’s another holiday between them, however, that is at constant risk of being overlooked.
Thanksgiving doesn’t have candy like Halloween or presents like Christmas. What it does have, thankfully, is television. Just like its Halloween counterpart, Thanksgiving comes along in the fall at an important time in the TV schedule. Traditionally, the last week of November is when many network TV shows are looking for a quick boost of creative and commercial energy to get through the Christmas break. And what better way than to do so than with a Thanksgiving episode, where all characters are basically culturally required to get together?
Though Halloween and Christmas specials often get the most attention, there are many fascinating Thanksgiving-themed episodes of popular TV shows. Here are just some of our favorites.
Bob’s Burgers
Season 3 Episode 5 – “An Indecent Thanksgiving Proposal”
Fox’s beloved animated series has staked its claim to Thanksgiving as its holiday of choice, which makes sense given that the Belcher clan takes their food quite seriously. Of the many Bob’s Burgers Thanksgiving specials, season 3’s “An Indecent Thanksgiving Proposal” is likely the best.
This episode finds Bob reluctantly agreeing to “rent out” his family to landlord Calvin Fischoeder (voiced by Kevin Kline) to pose as his family for Thanksgiving dinner while Bob poses as the family chef. While this is a strong enough set up to begin with, the episode excels at escalation and goes to some wild places – even indulging one of the series’ favorite recurring gags of Bob losing his mind and befriending an inanimate object. Of course the inanimate object this time around is none other than a Thanksgiving turkey.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Season 5 Episode 7 – “Two Turkeys”
“Two Turkeys” is a prime example of what makes Thanksgiving such a creatively rich holiday for sitcoms and other serialized TV endeavors to exploit. Brooklyn Nine-Nine had already long established that both Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy’s (Melissa Fumero) respective parents were crazy. All that was left to do was to get them in the same room together.

That’s just what “Two Turkeys” does. The whole family, including Jake’s dad Roger (Bradley Whitford), Amy’s dad Victor (Jimmy Smits), and Amy’s mom Camila (Bertila Dama), decides to have Thanksgiving at Jake’s mom Karen’s (Katey Sagal) house. Quickly, dueling Thanksgiving turkeys are set up, competitive juices start flowing, and a thumb or two is lost. “Two Turkeys” is Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s best Thanksgiving episode but “Mr. Santiago” in which Boyle intends to behead a live turkey certainly gives it a run for its money.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Season 4 Episode 8 – “Pangs”
Most TV Thanksgiving specials ignore the complicated origins of the holiday…and perhaps wisely so. For a long time, most sitcoms and network dramas lacked a real capacity to carefully discuss Thanksgiving myth-making while also addressing Native American genocide.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, however, had no such misgivings and dives right in. “Pangs” is technically the beginning of a Buffy/Angel two-hour Thanksgiving event. It’s got all the usual Thanksgiving episode trappings: food, friends, and family. It also has an army of Chumash Indian Warriors coming back from the grave to punish Sunnydale for its colonial sins.
Chuck
Season 4 Episode 10 – “Chuck Versus the Leftovers”
This is cheating a bit as “Chuck Versus the Leftovers” technically takes place on the day after Thanksgiving. But Black Friday shopping and turkey leftovers are certainly a part of the Thanksgiving experience.
This episode finds Chuck’s mom Mary (Linda Hamilton) and international arms dealer Alexei Volkoff (Timothy Dalton) coming over to Chuck’s place for a day-after-Thanksgiving leftover feast. Meanwhile Chuck’s friends at Buy More have to contend with the Black Friday shopping crowd. This is the definitive Chuck Thanksgiving episode as it highlights what the show does well. It balances the high-octane drama of Chuck’s spy life with his supposedly tranquil home life. Getting to enjoy Linda Hamilton and Timothy Dalton going head to head is just icing on the Jell-O salad.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Season 1 Episode 12 – “Talking Turkey”
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air features a few Thanksgiving episodes over its six season run but its first attempt remains the best. Will’s mom Viola makes one of her rare series appearances here when she joins the Banks’ household for Thanksgiving.
After the parents see how the kids mistreat everyone’s beloved butler Geoffrey, the gang is forced to cook a Thanksgiving meal on their own. Predictably it doesn’t go well. This is a big episode for all involved but for Viola and Aunt Viv in particular. It’s fascinating to watch through a modern lens, given original Aunt Viv actress Janet Hubert’s steadfast lack of involvement in all future Fresh Prince reboots and reunions.
Friday Night Lights
Season 4 Episode 13 – “Thanksgiving”
So many of the best moments in Friday Night Lights happen at the Taylor family dinner table. How then could the show pass up an opportunity for a good-old fashioned Thanksgiving episode?
“Thanksgiving” is an excellent episode that also serves as its respective season’s finale. This hour concludes Coach Taylor’s first year with the East Dillon Lions in truly satisfying fashion. Before that there’s still plenty of time for a heart-to-heart with QB Vince Howard and Buddy Garrity’s attempts at frying a turkey.
Friends
Season 5 Episode 8 – “The One With All the Thanksgivings”
Perhaps no series on television took the responsibility of Thanksgiving episodes more seriously than Friends. Friends has so many Thanksgiving-themed episodes that the entire list could essentially be made up of them. And that makes sense given the show’s premise of friends as a found family in the big city.
For the purposes of this list, however, let’s go with the aptly-named “The One With All the Thanksgivings.” In this fifth season episode, Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, Joey, and Chandler flashback to all of the Thanksgivings they’ve shared together. Consider this a Canterbury Tales of Thanksgiving … that just happens to feature Monica with a turkey on her head.
Gilmore Girls
Season 3 Episode 9 – “A Deep Fried Korean Thanksgiving”
Stars Hollow, Connecticut on Gilmore Girls just looks like a town itching for a good fall holiday. The New England hamlet is the kind of place that absolutely lights up with some fallen leaves and the warm aroma of turkey in the oven. Thankfully, the show agreed and rolled out a Thanksgiving-centric episode in its third season.
“A Deep Fried Korean Thanksgiving” adopts the tried and true “accepted too many dates to the ball” trope as Lorelai and Rory are pulled among four competing Thanksgiving dinners: Lorelai’s parents, Sookie, Luke, and Lane. It’s a jam-packed (and tofurkey-packed) episode that still somehow finds the time to introduce the beloved Cat Kirk.
How I Met Your Mother
Season 3 Episode 9 – “Slapsgiving”
In many ways, How I Met Your Mother was the natural sitcom successor to Friends. Like its NBC forefather CBS’s comedy followed a group of friends living their best lives in New York City. Another area in which HIMYM picks up the Friends ball and runs with it is with its appropriately respectful treatment of Thanksgiving.
How I Met Your Mother loves itself a good Thanksgiving episode. None of them, however, are better than the season 3 installment “Slapsgiving.” This episode finds the gang gathering at Marshall and Lily’s house for their first Thanksgiving as a married couple. Meanwhile, Barney is living in mortal fear of the third slap Marshall owes him due to losing a “slap bet.” That countdown to The Slap imbues an already excellent episode with a real fun sense of urgency.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Season 9 Episode 10 – “The Gang Squashes Their Beefs”
Dennis, Dee, Charlie, Mac, and Frank have made a lot of enemies during It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s very long, very creatively lucrative run. That’s why for the show’s ninth season finale, the gang decided to gather several of the folks they wronged together and get to squashing some beefs. And what better way to do so than with a nice Thanksgiving dinner?

This installment is a one big setup to a dinner table with the gang’s rogue’s gallery at the end and it is all well worth the wait. Some dry turkey and even dryer conservation is nowhere near enough to make nice with the McPoyles, Hwang, Cricket, Gail the Snail, or Bill Ponderosa, but bless the gang for trying anyway.
Mad Men
Season 1 Episode 13 – “The Wheel”
Not many Thanksgiving episodes can lay claim to being their respective series best hours, but then again AMC’s all-time classic Mad Men isn’t just any other series. Season 1 finale “The Wheel” is certainly among the best Mad Men installments ever and it just so happens to take place during the week of Thanksgiving 1960.
The Thanksgiving timeframe serves as an elegiac backdrop and Mad Men viewers are forced to confront what kind of man Don Draper really is. Don delivers the pitch of his lifetime to Kodak executives as he urges them to imagine their latest photo wheel creation not as a sleek, dispassionate time machine, but a carousel that can bring families back home to all the most important times of their lives. Then when Don returns home for Thanksgiving, he discovers what he probably already knew – those times are gone and no carousel can bring them back.
Master of None
Season 2 Episode 8 – “Thanksgiving”
OK, we know we just said that not many Thanksgiving episodes can lay claim to being their respective series’ best but here is another contender. “Thanksgiving” is the eighth episode of Master of None’s second (and thus far, final) season and it’s a perfect example of everything the show does well.
This episode takes a break from Dev’s (Aziz Ansari) storyline in the present to delve into the past of his friend Denise (Lena Waithe). Over several Thanksgiving meals throughout the years, Denise comes to realize her attraction to women, processes it, and does her best to communicate her identity to her mom (Angela Bassett). It’s a touching saga made possible by the Thanksgiving season. It also serves as many viewers’ introduction to the storytelling dynamo that is Lena Waithe.

The O.C.
Season 1 Episode 11 – “The Homecoming”
Mid-2000s teen drama The O.C. always paid proper respect to holidays. Who could forget the Cohen family’s dutiful observation of “Chrismukkah?” But the series’ first Thanksgiving installment in season 1 might just be its best holiday offering ever.
“The Homecoming” is a wonderful example of everything that The O.C. does well. The plot splits itself in two with Ryan (Ben McKenzie) and Marissa (Mischa Barton) heading back to Ryan’s hometown of Chino to meet Ryan’s brother in prison. That sets up a ludicrous crime arc that would make even the Riggins brothers of Friday Night Lights jealous. Meanwhile, back at the Cohen household, Seth’s (Adam Brody) inelegant juggling of the two women in his life comes to a chaotic head.
Orange is the New Black
Season 1 Episode 9 – “Fucksgiving”
Orange is the New Black’s Thanksgiving episode debuted all the way back in 2013, when Netflix was just proving itself to be a spot for original content. So imagine viewers’ surprise that in the streaming world, you can include the F-word in episode titles.
As is the case in every OITNB episode, a lot happens in this hour-long installment. But with Thanksgiving as the backdrop, there’s a real festive air to the proceedings. Perhaps it helps that Taystee (Danielle Brooks) is set to be released and returned to the real world or that Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) is praying for the rightful end of said real world. In any case, “Fucksgiving” passionate conclusion makes a convincing case that Thanksgiving is among the sexiest of holidays.
Riverdale
Season 4 Episode 7 – “The Ice Storm”
Riverdale’s Thanksgiving episode is about just as insane as one would imagine a Riverdale Thanksgiving episode would be. “The Ice Storm” (which borrows its name and concept from Rick Moody’s 1994 novel of the same name) finds Jughead and Betty stranded at Stonewall Prep due to an ice storm on Thanksgiving while Archie hosts a Thanksgiving dinner at the community center.

Riverdale Season 4 Ending Explained
By Chris Cummins
Of course this episode features cartoonish levels of scheming, but it also takes the responsibility of the holiday seriously. Riverdale spends the episode’s opening once again addressing the tragic death of Luke Perry and his character, Fred Andrews. Amid all the plot twists, the show still excels at putting family first.
Seinfeld
Season 6 Episode 8 – “The Mom and Pop Store”
Many episodes of Seinfeld feature dense plotting, but even by those standards “The Mom and Pop Store” is a very busy episode of television. These 22 minutes feature Jerry getting tricked by a mom and pop shoe store, George trying to find Jon Voight, and Kramer having some major nosebleed problems.
But the Thanksgiving portion of the episode is what stands out as Elaine gets the invite to Jerry’s dentist’s (played by none other than Bryan Cranston, beginning his fruitful arc of Seinfeld guest appearances) Thanksgiving. Jerry is unsure if he himself is invited, but when dental issues begin to pop up, he decides that a Thanksgiving dinner full of dentists might be a useful place to stop by.
Smallville
Season 6 Episode 7 – “Rage”
While it was cruel for Smallville to wait until after the Jonathan Kent era to hold its first Thanksgiving episode, it’s nice that it got around to it all the same. Granted, Thanksgiving doesn’t factor much into “Rage.” Instead much of the hour deals with Clark assisting his good friend Oliver Queen with his mysterious addiction.
But when the Thanksgiving table moment finally does arrive, it’s a real winner. In terms of pre-Arrowverse WB/CW warm and fuzzies, it’s hard to top a dinner featuring Clark Kent, Martha Kent, Lionel Luther, and Green-freaking-Arrow. And of course the presence of NXIVM’s own Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan just adds a strange glow over all.
The Sopranos
Season 3 Episode 8 – “He Is Risen”
Many classic Sopranos scenes take place around the Sopranos family dinner table (mostly so Tony can yell at the insufferable A.J.). It’s only natural then that the show would feature a Thanksgiving episode at some point during its classic six-season run.

The Sopranos: The Most Memorable Hits
By Tony Sokol
That moment comes midway through the excellent season 3. Granted, Thanksgiving doesn’t play a major role in this hour, aside from Janice’s creepy elderly boyfriend muttering “he is risen” during dinner. But this episode is filled with classic Sopranos moments all the same: the introduction of Gloria Trillo, the death of Gigi Cestone on the toilet, and Ralph’s continued seasons-long efforts to dig his own grave. All of those events will factor heavily in the episodes to come, for now, however, The Sopranos is happy to just pass the gravy (actual gravy, not red sauce).
South Park
Season 15 Episode 13 – “A History Channel Thanksgiving”
Over the span of its staggering 23 seasons (plus one Pandemic Special), South Park has revealed a real affinity for holiday episodes, particularly the Christmas ones in which the show can feature longtime characters Santa Claus and Jesus Christ.
In this season 15 episode, however, South Park turns its satirical eye to Thanksgiving…or the History Channel version of it more accurately and weirdly. After the boys are assigned a paper on the history of Thanksgiving, they watch the History Channel to discover that the holiday’s origins are far more extraterrestrial than expected. Soon, Stan and company are involved in an interdimensional Thanksgiving adventure involving wormholes and Natalie Portman.
The West Wing
Season 2 Episode 8 – “Shibboleth”
A “Shibboleth” is a long-standing tradition or custom (often a phrasing or even a single word) that distinguishes one group of people from another. The best episodes of The West Wing seek to understand what the shibboleths of this strange country are…and “Shibboleth” is undoubtedly one of the series’ best episodes.

It’s the night before Thanksgiving at the White House and the West Wing staff are all facing decisions. CJ has been tasked with choosing between two turkeys to pardon; Toby, Josh, and Sam must figure out how to watch football on Thanksgiving day; and most seriously: President Bartlett has to decide what to do with a boat of persecuted Chinese evangelical Christians seeking asylum. It’s a typically hectic day in the West’s most powerful executive office, but the show explores how one holiday can bring all the chaos to a halt. For a little bit at least.

Okay, so I’m a slut for medical dramas but I also get frustrated when there’s a lack of diversity or when queer/PoC/disabled etc characters exist solely to suffer at the hands of writers. Could you rank the current medical dramas from best to worst in terms of diversity?
 HO’S UNITE!
I completely understand. Not only in the lack of diversity but also a lack of the KIND of diversity. I have a weird theory about television and often movie casts. Of course this ranking is only of the shows I watch. Worst to Best.
The Resident
The Good:
The show begins with the audience following Devon Pravesh, a Gujarati and South Asian man. He’s on of the most realistic characters considering most medical shows seem to gloss over the fact that most people in medical school as well as working practitioners look an awful lot like Devon and less like Conrad. They have the shoot-for-excellence-at-all-times Nigerian immigrant surgeon and all around bad-ass Mina Okafor, and of course The Raptor, AJ Austin who was adopted by a Chinese man and a Black American woman. The newest edition of Dr. Barrett Cain adds another bit of chocolate goodness to look at too.
The Bad:
Aside from Mina’s poorly cast mother Lynne Whitfield and the introduction of Devon’s parents the show hasn’t figured out how to weave in the different ethnicity's and backgrounds of their characters of color. No one speaks in their mother-tongue, celebrates any holidays or traditions tied to their respective cultures and religions and of course the most obvious. EVERYONE here is straight and able-bodied. And there are only TWO female leads, with most of the other recurring female characters being sent away or killed off.
The Good Doctor
The Good:
Although not the first medical drama to introduce a character with Autism it is the first to have one as the lead and his autism is a focus of the show. In the beginning there was the English born Dr. Jared Kalu, we know he comes from money and is assumed to be Asian, the actor is actually Nigerian and white, after he left the show Dr. Park was introduced. The Good Doctor has had the most Asian representation on a medical show I believe EVER in the history of prime-time television. Allegra Aoki, Dr. Aurdrey Lim, and Dr. Jackson Han round the out the Asian representation on the show.  Carly Lever, Dr. Claire Browne, and Dr. Marcus Andrews are represented as black or mixed-race Black Americans. Dr. Neil Melendez is the only Latino or Hispanic character he really doesn’t lean into it. Dr. Glassman and his wife are both Jewish.
The Bad:
The Good Doctor is doing something different having an autistic character as the lead, and although Freddie Highmore is a talented actor, he isn’t autistic. Also it would’ve been even better if Shaun could’ve been Shauna. A chance was missed here by taking a look at the often under diagnosed sect of girls and women who are autistic. The show has a lot of women on it both recurring and regular but ALL of them, just like the men,are straight. And a missed opportunity too considering the actress who plays Carly has been married to a woman since 2013. Also, Carly and Claire can pass the paper bag test, NO ONE is bilingual, and if they are they don’t show it or any of the other aspects of their cultural differences it’s very “American.
Chicago Med
The Good:
Out of all the One Chicago Shows, Med has the most racially diverse cast as well as diverse recurring characters. They have four black women on the cast. April Sexton whose real surname is Suassuna is Afro-Brazilian, who speaks both Spanish and Portuguese, attends family functions based on her heritage and has even shared a few anecdotes and beliefs from her culture which also include her brother Dr. Noah Sexton. Ditto for the recurring character Dr. Isidore Latham. He has Asperger’s, is Jewish, and observes all aspects of Judaism including wearing a kippah, and sharing some Jewish based jokes. Dr. Ethan Choi is believed to be Korean and Iranian born Dominic Rains has been added to the cast as Dr. Crockett Marcel rounding out the leads of Asian descent.
The Bad:
Ethan’s ethnicity and race has only been brought up when it was being demeaned. Other than that the show leans heavily on his military background to give him depth but gives zero basis for any customs or cultural traits he probably had growing up. Nary a mention is given about Crockett’s race only his southern New Orleans heritage leaving us as an audience wondering if he’s Creole? Spicy White? No idea. Also April is Brazilian but almost exclusively speaks Spanish when not speaking English to her brother which is by far the strangest considering I have never met anyone who chooses English if they are raised in a multicultural household, and definitely not in conversation with their family members. But never Portuguese. All of these shows fail at representing Black American cultural, which leaves Maggie and Sharon with very little to share. And of course the most obvious. There are no LGBT characters on the show. None are leads and it doesn’t appear as though they are adding any or thinking about opening any new doors within the characters.
New Amsterdam
The Good
New Amsterdam does a lot of things right. My dear Vijay Kapoor who’s Indian identity is very wrapped in who he is, from his accent, to his prayers, mannerisms, and discussions of his past he isn’t just a token he’s a full character. Although the show has yet to address it Dr. Helen Sharpe who is obviously black is played by Freema Agyeman who is not so obviously half Iranian on her mothers side. But she is English and her disposition, her language and slang are represented in that regard. Lauren Bloom is a neurodivergent character with ADHD and a struggling addict. Dr. Floyd Reynolds is Black American who has Sunday dinners at his mothers. And Dr. Iggy Frome is a gay married man with 50 bajillion Pakistani children and aiming for one more. Recurring characters, Dr. Valentina Castro, Dora, and Casey are all  Latino and Evie Floyd is mixed race, white and Black American. Not to mention this show has plethora of diverse peripheral characters, little people, hijabs, turbans, kippahs, everywhere, you name it you’ve probably seen it. The show has to be diverse because it’s in New York and it’s supposed to be an international hospital. The place is MASSIVE.
The Bad:
All that diversity, all the difference, cultural richness, ripe stories running amok and the entire show is centered on a cis-het white man. Not mention Casey and Dora don’t even have last names. Maybe that’s why the actress isn’t on the show anymore and is now on Emergence, New Amsterdam’s rival at that time slot.
Grey’s Anatomy
The Good
Where do you start with the longest running medical drama on television.
They’ve had it all and still do. They constantly have LGBT characters, who are shown to get hot and heavy the same as their het-counterparts. Where other shows have two men bird-kissing like they don’t even want to touch, Levi and Nico are rolling around in ambulances and hooking up in on-call rooms. Ditto for the women, I stan Callie x Arizona especially their golden years. Nothing will ever touch the way Arizona used to say “Calliope” when they first started dated, it still makes me smile thinking about it. They’ve had addicts, alcoholics, neurodivigent characters, every race you could think of, Muslim, Christian,Jewish, and atheists. All kinds of socio-economic backgrounds. If you can think it they’ve had it and there really isn’t much reason or room to list all the characters both recurring and regular who have checked damn near every box.
The Bad:
It’s time for more brown Asians. And a regular neurodivergent character although there is more than enough room to diagnose a few of the characters if they wanted to. I’d be happy with a deaf doctor too. Also Carina DeLuca is currently the only Bi-character and she’s been kind of only used as a bed warmer which is...well, yikes.

Intersectionality in Sense8
Intersectionality which is depicted in popular aspects of culture, like the Netflix series Sense8, is not only necessary but overtly appreciated from audience members. Intersectionality refers to those who obtain multiple marginalized identifications, such as being Black and being a woman. Representation of these variations of often misunderstood characteristics provides an outlet for audience members who can relate to the characters portrayed on the screen. Unfortunately, many people who obtain multiple stigmatized identifications are not represented on screen as often as white, straight characters, or those with one identity which does not align with characteristics normalized in society. Underrepresentation of these existing combinations of identifications is problematic when considering the prevalence of these characteristics off screen, and is instead making the assumption these combinations of characteristics do not exist by choosing to ignore their existence. Excluding combinations of marginalized identifications supports the inaccurate stereotypes by falsely guiding audience members into complete ignorance of the existence of someone with a variety of stigmatized characteristics, along with the unique experience of discrimination which follows. These people who identify as such are often persuaded to believe people who look like them, or obtain the same characteristics are either not as significant as the people usually on screen or believe they simply do not exist. However, Sense8 portrays a majority of the characters as obtaining a variety of marginalized identifications and utilizes such diverse storylines in a genuine and accurate way.
Tumblr media
Netflix’s Sense8 portrays a variety of unique characters: including a Black man named Capheus who lives in Kenya; Lito, a gay, Spanish actor; a Korean woman named Sun; Will, a White Chicago police officer; Kala, a religious Indian pharmacist; Wolfgang, a German thief; Nomi, a trans-woman who lives in San Fransisco and is in an openly gay relationship with a Black woman named Amanita; and an Icelandic D.J. named Riley.
youtube
Sense8 is a combination of genres in itself, including aspects of sci-fi and mystery, drama, romance, action, and melancholy. “Sense8 follows eight people from vastly different backgrounds all across the world whose lives begin to gradually intertwine when they discover that they can share a mental link with one another” (Seligson). The group of eight characters are able to share their thoughts, experiences, and skills with one another. Below is the official Netflix trailer of the third season, which was shortened into a movie after Netflix’s abrupt and controversial cancellation of the series;
youtube
The condensed movie was released on June 8th, 2018, and is almost three hours long.
The characters depicted in Sense8 are unique from one another and vary from the usual main characters presented in series. The diverse characteristics between the characters allows for a diverse audience to relate to the specific characters they believe best represent them. The show not only provides physical representation of their unique characteristics, but also shares a personalized and genuine background of each of the characters. “I don’t want to reduce Sense8 to a single message, but I also want to applaud it for it’s progressivism. No other show on television comes close to the level of inclusion and representation it has, and it doesn’t get nearly enough credit for that” (Seligson). For instance, Nomi Marks is a political blogger who has a great amount of experience with online hacking. She is from San Francisco and is in an openly gay relationship with a woman named Amanita (Orley). “However, Nomi’s life is not as simple as we believe, but that she was born in the body of Michael” (Kevin). Nomi is a trans-woman and is played by Jamie Clayton, a trans-woman actor. The series provides the audience with the upsetting storyline of Nomi’s unaccepting mother who continues to call Nomi, Michael.
Tumblr media
The next character, Lito, is a closeted gay Spanish actor in Mexico. He constantly pressures himself to appear straight to the public, although Lito is in love with a man Hernando who secretly lives with Lito. Lito is a determined actor who is continuously attempting to create a successful career. With support from Hernando and others, Lito decides to come out as gay to the audience (Orley).
Tumblr media
Will Gorski is a Chicago police officer who obtains a major role in Sense8. Will and Riley meet in the beginning and discover they are falling in love with one another. The series shares a fight between Will and his dad who struggles with alcohol addiction and unfortunately dies after falling down a flight of stairs (Orley).
Tumblr media
RIley is originally from Iceland but ran away when she was younger and D.J.s in England. She had a troubled past and as a result is involved in the drug trade. She is in a relationship with Will (Orley).
Tumblr media
Wolfgang is from Germany and is a professional safe-cracker. He is constantly involved in world-class jewel heists with a close friend, as well as organized crime (Orley).
Tumblr media
Kala lives in India and is praised for studying medicine and pharmacy. Sense8 shares Kala’s life as religious and structured. During the beginning of season one, Kala struggles with the reality she is about to marry someone she does not love due to Kala’s dad’s arrangement. Kala and Wolfgang begin seeing each other often and consider being in a romantic relationship (Orley).
Tumblr media
Capheus is a bus driver and care-taker in Kenya. His mom is sick throughout the series, and Capheus is determined to receive the money needed to purchase medication. Capheus is a passionate, knowledgable character (Orley).
Tumblr media
The last main character of the eight is Sun, who is a Financial Officer in South Korea. Sun enjoys kickboxing, and is often helping the other seven use the strength and talent she obtains to get out of dangerous situations when needed. Additionally, Sun’s younger brother is caught in a work-related crime and Sun is challenged with the choices of listening to her diseased mother’s advice of always protecting family, or choosing not to make the ultimate sacrifice and instead allow herself to succeed (Orley).
Tumblr media
These diverse characters, “were born at the exact same moment on the exact same day, are physically connected, even as they live radically different lives” (Xiao). However, their unique experiences and intersecting, or not intersecting, identifications allow them to still exist as separate beings. As the audience is able to see throughout the series, these characters experience a variety of disadvantages or privileges solely because of their identifications. For instance, Nomi, the gay, trans-woman, is constantly verbally abused and maliciously misgendered by her own mother because Nomi is a trans-woman. Additionally, she is dating another woman, which Nomi’s mother disapproves of as well. The disadvantages of being both a trans-woman and identifying as gay are significantly different than another white woman identifying as gay, or solely being a trans-woman but being exclusively attracted to men. There are plenty of examples within Sense8 about intersectional experiences; including, Sun who is Korean and a woman who enjoys kickboxing. Sun lives in Korea, so she is not visibly discriminated against for being Korean, but she is often doubted for being a woman in a high-profile work setting in which the stereotypes are influenced by Korean culture. Additionally, Sun is strong and can arguably win in a majority of the kickboxing fights she participates in. When considering the expectations for women within Korea, being an outstanding kickboxer is definitely not considered “womanly.” Sun is often doubted while in the kickboxing range, and when she is at work she is seen as passive when considering Sun’s relationship with her younger brother.
The representation of diverse identifications within Sense8 only increases a range of audience members by allowing more people to relate to unique experiences which commonly occur within marginalized communities. Though the series may have cancelled due to diversity and specific experiences not everyone is able to relate to, the show resonated and continues to empower particular groups of people (Aguado-Peláez). “The series has found a firm niche among primarily queer audiences largely due to its highly visible and progressive representations of gay, lesbian, trans, and otherwise-queer bodies, sexualities, and subjectivities. This might be one of the its most redeeming, or perhaps the most redeeming, aspects...Sense8 resonates with queer folx and people of colour...The representation of queerness in Sense8 is normalized, it never seeks to be assimilationist or heteronormative. Instead, it presents the queerness of its cluster in opposition to hetero-patriarchal and corporate agendas” (Elrod). The representation of stigmatized characteristics is significant when considering viewers who are searching for authentic, accurate experiences to relate to, especially younger audience members who may be desperate for a role model.
youtube
Though Sense8 is obviously inclusive, critics discuss the problematic approach of understanding stigmatized characteristics to be true by stereotyping the characters within the show, and then attempting to argue these same stereotypes do not exist. “This kind of anti-stereotype criticism, though still important to undertake, often derives from and reaffirms the prevailing paradigm” (HSU). Therefore, critiques suggest Sense8 creators essentially believe the stereotypes as true. Additionally, some audience members believe the screen time of racially stigmatized groups in the show did not equate to the screen time given to white characters like Will or RIley. “The notion that having more diversity runs afoul of some sort of narrative economics is predicated on the idea that all characters need equal screen time” (Menken). Any piece of media can be improved in order to achieve a more inclusive character base, but Sense8 is arguably one of the most inclusive series on Netflix.

Lesson 15, Task 2: What has Influenced me?
There are many different cultural influences in my life, whether it is in the type of food I usually eat, the clothes I wear, the place I live in and the structures on my surroundings, my leisure activities and my entertainment.
First off, the food that I usually eat is heavily influenced by my own heritage and ethnic background which is south asian. A general look at meals I would have include foods such as vegetable curries, rice, seafood and stews. South asian dishes are known for the variety of spices used in each one. Specifically speaking, my ehtnic background is bengali and they are known for having fish in their main diet. And so, growing up, though not usually, I was accustomed to having dishes that included fish- however, that has changed as I hardly eat it anymore. Though I am not vegan, my diet has been influenced by it as I am consuming less meat than before. Veganism can be traced back to Indian and Mediterranean societies. My favourite type of food is pasta which originates from Italy.
Tumblr media
Fashion
Tumblr media
My general daily style of clothing is western influenced as I live in a western country. However, some of my clothes are influenced by other countries such as eastern Asian countries as they have stores that have opened up in the Canadian malls. For example, some of my clothes are from Uniqlo, a store originally from Japan. I’ll sometimes wear south asian attire based on the occasion. For example, I’ll generally wear them when going to weddings, parties, family get togethers, holiday celebrations and other special occasions. It also depends on who is hosting these events and the people attending. Generally speaking, I stick to western dresses, but if the host and those attending are generally south asian, I’ll want to throw on more traditional south asian styled clothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Architecture
I do not have any major preferences for certain types of buildings, however if I ever get my own place, I think I would avoid more modern looking places with things like marble and glass doors. Having lived in only one house my whole life, I’ve grown most comfortable with wooden staircases, detailed carpets and warm coloured walls. In this case, my childhood and current home (I guess you could say early 90s and 2000s styled homes) is what has influenced my discomfort with more modern homes. Growing up in a slightly suburban area, there aren’t many tall buildings and so when entering the city, I tend to feel a bit nauseous and dizzy with the tall buildings and the busy and narrow streets.
Tumblr media
Leisure activities
My leisure activities involves swimmings, badminton, hiking, and mehndi and henna “painting”. Badminton originates from ancient civilizations in Europe and Asia. Many hiking trails and it's surroundings, has lots of aboriginal history. Sometimes there are local hiking tour guides who will explain the historical significance of each site. My like for swimmings was influenced by mom. In my mom's hometown, there are many lakes and rivers to swim and so the “culture” for past times there was to go swimming. She passed her hobby of swimming to me as she’d take me every week to the community pool since I was little. Finally, my hobby of making designs using henna, which may also be known as temporary henna tattoos dates as far back as ancient egypt. In south asia, henna is used to decorate the body for special occasions such as weddings, holidays and other celebrations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
 Entertainment
In terms of entertainment, my interests have been influenced by japanese culture. These include, japanese music, anime and dramas. The same goes for korean entertainment with k-pop and korean dramas. I have also been influenced by Indian entertainment (namely bollywood) as well as punjabi, hindi and bengali music. Watching and listening to foreign entertainment has allowed me to get a grasp of different cultures aside from the ones I am accustomed too. And obviously, the biggest form of entertainment that has influenced me are american movies and television series (ex. Hollywood, disney, netflix). Entertainment is the biggest source of influence as it is so abundant and so ingrained in most people's everyday lives. American entertainment being the main source of my entertainment since I was born has obviously influenced the way I look at life, my surroundings and the way I live.

Did Bepannaah ever have a chance?
Tumblr media
Critics have always slandered television. While other countries television content is improving in quality, the same can’t be said about Indian Television (ITV). Known for its ludicrous plots, ‘saas/bahu’ and naagin dramas, ITV is at the bottom of the barrel in terms of ‘quality television’. However, this opinion of mine was about to be challenged by Colors’ Bepannaah. The promo was engaging and seemed like the plot of a Turkish or Korean drama (high concept television), rather than something on ITV.
Tumblr media
It showed a story of Aditya (Harshad Chopda) and Zoya (Jennifer Winget) finding their respective partners dead and holding each other’s hands. Questions arose, how did they die (murder or accident?), were they truly having an affair, and how will AdiYA get together (cause you know they would and hopefully it would be a slow burn). The story line and the actors got me to give ITV a chance.
Tumblr media
And the first few of episodes did not disappoint! The cinematography and design of the show seemed of a quality that I had never seen on ITV. Every shot seemed cinematic. However a couple of episodes in, were the plot moved to Mumbai, it lost its’ cinematic look and was similar to other shows on ITV. I heard the budget was cut down due to TRP (ratings) and external factors, so I could not fault the production house, CineVistaas (CV). The story, however, was fine.Though the event planning tracks became tiring as I wanted the series to be about two strangers who try to find the truth about their spouses’ affair and murder. I gave the lagging plot a pass because ITV needs to stretch out its plot-line for a weekly and indefinite format. Bepannaah was just submitting to ITV structure and I could see there were minor plot points that alluded to a bigger plan. A diary, flashbacks, and a hooded figure.
Tumblr media
But it wasn’t just the mystery that got me tuned in every episode. It was also the characters of Aditya and Zoya. The characters and the amazing and dedicated performances by the actors, especially Mr. Harshad Chopda who arguable has a meatier role than Jennifer Winget’s Zoya. Chopda artfully balances between Aditya’s ‘innocent lost child’ nature and ‘angry young man hating the world’ attitude seamlessly. Winget has had her meatiest role previously, Beyhadh’s Maya, but gives her all to the sheltered and naive Zoya. Both actors are perfect to play the two strangers who are haunted by their past and come together to find the truth and heal themselves and one another. Moments when AdiYa would converse with one another about their spouses and the marriage they had were captivating. I came for the mystery, I stayed for AdiYA. Seeing these two characters (and actors’ performance) share the pain of the deaths and betrayals of their loved ones had on them was something new on television (not just ITV). It seemed that the series respected its audience.
Tumblr media
However, this changed post Episode 81. Again, this seems to be in relation to TRPs and the CVs and the channel’s submission to the public masses. And this got me thinking, did Bepannaah ever have a chance?
ITV programming is about 21 minutes (without ads) and airs five times a week. There is no limit in the number of episodes, as the goal is to go for as long as you can. And episodes are usually filmed close to air dates, making scripts a response to TRPs and audience reactions.
Tumblr media
Contrast this to Western and Turkish television. Western series are about 45mins per week and seasons are filmed in their entirety before airdates. Turkish shows, though filmed close to air dates (live filming), are 2 hour episodes per week. These elements, time and filming structure, aid in the quality of the television show. A story like Bepannaah needs time to be made (a complete vision that needs to be done in pre-production) and time to ingest (longer episodes rather than small snippets of scenes pulled in 21mins).
Tumblr media
But what ITV really needs to go towards quality, that neither western or Turkish television does, is a definite number of episodes. Bepannaah needs a ending and episodes that logically, systematically, and emotionally lead up to that ending and tie it all together. Korean dramas are good in that way (though they do take part in live filming). An average drama has 16 hour long episodes, which are aired twice a week. Though it seems short and Indian audiences want to see their favourite show and actors go on forever, this format and structure leads to quality as opposed to relying on quantity.
Tumblr media
In a perfect television viewing world, Bepannaah would be a pre-production, filmed and completed before airing (kind of like Pakistan) - eliminating chances of script and story being changed or swayed by general audiences and TRPs pressure. It would consist of 20 episode series, 1 hour episodes, that had a structural beginning, middle, and end. It would be a complex story of infidelity and betrayal, two strangers coming together to solve who killed their respective partners, and the moving on from broken relationships to grow as individuals and blossom into new beginnings/relationships.
Tumblr media
But alas, current episodes a perpetuating the standards of ITV. Love triangles, forced marriage, evil parents, male lead being emotionally and physically abusive to show his love, female lead being passive and lacking agency in her life, jealousy being shown as a merit in love, junoon and pyaar being mixed up for one another, etc.
Though, how else are ITV shows going to get viewers to come back everyday? ITV doesn’t want a intellectual audience that analyses shows and rewatches it to catch nuisances, they want the general public that switches on the tv and watches the ads.
Tumblr media
I’m not sorry, ITV... you lost me. Though I am sorry, Bepannaah, you deserved better.

Lip balms might help in the short term, but long term they do more harm than good. Reason: 95% of lip balm contain some form of alcohol, which will dry your lips even more and make them become dependent on "lip balm". Same goes for hand creams and body lotions. My apartment has two bathrooms. A large full bath upstairs that everyone uses and a small half bath downstairs that was utilized occasionally but not too often. We had an agreement when we moved in that someone would clean the upstairs bathroom once a week and we would rotate turns. Korean actresses are definitely beautiful. With their cute eyes, milky skin, and baby lips, many girls around the world are fond of beautifying themselves to achieve the same look. Every time they appear on television dramas, blockbuster films, and even in commercials and interviews, their beauty is just stunningly wow. Friday was quite eventful with a large scale regional rescue exercise that was then transformed into a real rescue of a lost american hiker (my group found him, yay!). We gained about 500m up a 50 hill in 40 minutes to get to him. Then there was a hike this weekend during a training trip for rookies in my rescue team. It was most ludicrous to watch through a glass the Indians, as often as the shot struck the water, take up stones, and, as a bold defiance, throw them towards the ship, though about a mile and a half distant! A boat was sent with orders to fire a few musket shots wide of them. The Fuegians hid themselves behind the trees, and for every discharge of the muskets they fired their arrows; all, however, fell short of the boat, and the officer as he pointed at them laughed. This made the Fuegians frantic with passion, and they shook their mantles in vain rage. We start by harvesting our own silicon from a mine we have dug ourselves. That an important step, what if the established mines put back doors in the silicon itself? Next, we manufacture the transistors and hand wire the diodes on our own cpu. It would be tempting to use more precise machines but we can be certain a machine hasn been compiled by the malicious compiler that inserts instructions to combat this exact scenario. My Spanish teacher gave students three clothespins and, when they had these, they were expected to only speak Spanish. If a student spoke in English and the teacher or another student heard them, they would say "Dame tu pinza!" and they would lose those clothespins. They could win them back if they caught another person speaking English. I think what really bothers me 칠곡출장샵 the most about this is how ass backwards it is. There are any number of 칠곡출장샵 games on Steam that have incredibly intense violence and mature themes that no ones bats an eye at, but the second any form of sexual content is involved people lose their goddamned minds. It also seems a little bit strange to me how much of a focus Visual Novels get whenever this kind of thing comes up. There are some balance issues that the community whittled out pretty quickly that I like to see addressed, and the cosmetics are some doodoo, but overall I having a ball. Finding a good team or discord makes it even better. Been having some crashing issues on PC, runs like a dream on PS4.. The simple answer is no. I own A LOT of sheet masks and single use masks and I just cannot bring myself to inventory them. Also, at the moment, I still living half out of boxes.

“Crazy Rich Asians” means more to Asian Americans and has little to do with Race!
Tumblr media
For the last four weeks or so, Crazy Rich Asians has dominated the box office. Based off the novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan, the film has generated over $149.2 million USD worldwide in revenue. Developed with a minuscule budget of only $30 million USD, it is safe to say it was more than a success for Warner Bros., the film company who produced the film.
To be fair, Crazy Rich Asians not only deserves every cent it has made, but has earned it on its credits alone. The plot is good with some unique twists and turns that stray from your typical rom-com, the sets are detailed and highlight the movie’s title concept, and the acting was on par too.
With all the success it has earned, you’d think that Asians in general, not just Asian Americans, would blindly love the movie. Yes, we do love it, but not in the sense that is being utilized for social justice. Crazy Rich Asians means more to Asian Americans and has little to do with race. Don’t believe me? Let me explain.
youtube
An Asian Rom-Com at Heart!
According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), Crazy Rich Asians is a contemporary romantic comedy starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Michelle Yeoh. The story follows Rachel Chu (Wu), an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to her boyfriend Nick's (Golding) hometown of Singapore for his best friend's wedding. Before long, his secret is out: Nick is from a family that is impossibly wealthy, he's perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia, and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down.
I can personally say the movie follows the aforementioned synopsis very well, but it also utilizes general Asian tropes that most Asians will recognize it while providing insight to those who don’t know about them a reason why said plot is progressing in the way it is. When Eleanor Young (Yeoh) talks about how Asians don’t follow their passions but pursue work for family and practicality, that is generally true. I, being Filipino, can personally attest that my mom wanted me to either be a nurse or a mailman as they were “stable” and “high-paying” jobs.
Even with all the little nods to general Asian tropes and the uniqueness added into the romantic comedy part of the plot, it is an Asian rom-com at heart. Social justice warriors in the media, especially those who write for news and entertainment sites that generally swing left, tried to play the movie as the first all-Asian cast movie to “make it.”
SJWs try to “reason” the success for Crazy Rich Asian
It does sound cool for Crazy Rich Asians to be known as the first all-Asian cast movie since The Joy Luck Club. Unfortunately, there is an issue in that statement SJWs have given to the movie: It is not the first all-Asian cast movie since The Joy Luck Club. If that statement were indeed fact, what about all the Chinese movies with an all-Chinese cast? What about all the Japanese movies with an all-Japanese cast? K-movies (Korean movies) with an all-Korean or diverse Asian cast. How about Pinoy movies with an all-Pinoy cast, so on and so forth. I think what SJWs tried to say is Crazy Rich Asians is the first all-Asian cast movie in Hollywood since The Joy Luck Club.
Tumblr media
To be fair, the blunder of their statement is something they can bounce back from, but them saying Crazy Rich Asians is a “diverse Asian cast movie” is not. Sorry but it is not a diverse Asian cast movie. Where are the Japanese people, the Korean people, the Taiwanese people, the Indian people, the Filipino people, and the other people often recognized as Asian? If we really wanted to be honest with this movie, its title should be Crazy Rich Singaporeans from China.
Why is Crazy Rich Asians important to Asian Americans?
In the end, I have to give SJWs credit for stopping when they had to. The narrative for social justice was just digging a hole for them. Maybe that’s why there hasn’t been much racial arguments compared to other movies starring a cast that isn’t all-white. As a matter of fact, Asians are the ones who are criticizing Crazy Rich Asians more so than anyone else. With that in mind, many of us are understanding if a non-Asian person doesn’t consider Crazy Rich Asians to be the “best movie ever” as the media has reviewed it to be. Everyone is different and everyone has preferences. Everyone!
So the question is why is Crazy Rich Asians so important to Asian Americans? The answer is this:
Crazy Rich Asians showed that Asian Americans can be cast in multiple roles outside of the typical tropes (computer geek, period drama, etc.) they are often cast in Hollywood.
For the longest time, Hollywood has typecast Asian American actors into tropes they deem synonymous with Asians. This heavily limited acting opportunities for Asian Americans in Hollywood. Though we were annoyed and showed our displeasure for such, we did not stick around to stew in our disappointment. Many Asian Americans went back to their family’s home country to make a name for themselves. Guess what? It works many times. Take my home country of the Philippines for example. Many of our popular stars are from outside of the Philippines. They came in and became icons because opportunities were limited back where they lived. That includes Hollywood.
With Crazy Rich Asians, Asian Americans are now being recognized in Hollywood as actors and actresses who can play multiple roles, not just those associated with our race. Constance Wu is one of the actresses leading the charge as she has shown the girth of her acting chops not only in Crazy Rich Asians but also the popular television show Fresh Off the Boat.
As time goes by, I -- along with other Asian Americans -- hope to see Asian American actors play a diverse array of roles either it be minor, supporting, or main. Because in the end, Asian American actors indirectly don’t want to be known as Asian American actors. They want to be known as American actors, ones who are just as competitive with other actors despite race.
