ANIMATED THE KISS KOKONUI (HELP)

Yes,I'm gonna talk about THE KISS 💜🌈
Tumblr media
I'm still jumping around my home and seeing all the Kokonui edits I can find, 24h later and the hype doesn't go away.
So I wanna talk about why seeing this kiss animated (specially in such a beautiful way, really, thanks Liden Films), was so important for me.
I started to watch anime when I was little and, besides Dragon Ball, Sakura and Sailormoon were the first animes that really catch my attention.
Sakura specially will always have a place in my heart 💜
(and yes, I know CLAMP had a lot of dark shit going on on their mangas, but when I was a kid, I only saw the queerness and that made me happy)
I was around eight/nine years old, it was the end of the 90s and the queer representation in occident was... Terrible. It didn't almost exist and was full of "kill your gays" and queerbating.
Suddenly, I was watching a show were it was okay for a girl like Tomoyo being in love with her best friend, were nobody had any problem with Xioran being oppenly bisexual (he likes Yukito before Sakura), were Toya and Yukito became my first ship ever. I used to scream to the tv with their scenes, saying things like "okay, gave Yukito your magic, but say that you love him Toya! Focus! Kiss!"
Tumblr media
Then, Sailormoon had Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus that were girlfriends. More than one character with genderfuckery. The three Sailor Stars that were genderfluid in a legendary level.
Tumblr media
Ranma was also there. Non-binary dream for me, thanks Ranma 💜
Tumblr media
I'm saying that, for a queer kid in the 90s, the level of genderfuckery that anime had made me felt seen. Made me felt like I wasn't that weird for liking the girls in my class, for not feeling like a boy or a girl (even if it took me decades to realize why). This characters, this representations, made me felt less alone. Made me think for the first time in my life, that there was other people like me, that being straight and follow gender roles wasn't the only choice out there.
Edit, because I forgot to mention Utena. The girl that refuses to adapt to gender roles and ends ups becoming her own prince and saving her girlfriend from the abusive brother. Utena was also mythical for me.
Tumblr media
Of course, not everything was wholesome in the way of portraying queer representation in anime and manga, I'm not saying that.
So that was what got me into anime, what made me start buying manga with my small allowance.
A few years later, I discovered fanfiction.net, yaoi and BL. I found a place on the internet full of people shipping characters that were like me. A place were it was safe being queer. I also started getting into shonen, were the queerness wasn't as magical as in shoujo, but thanks mostly to the fandom, it was still there. I could ship them even if it wasn't canon, because most of this characters never had a romantic interest, so... Who said they were straight? (Obviously, even if they were in canon, we could ship them anyway)
And this is what I'm trying to say. More than twenty years later of seeing myself in a character like Tomoyo, of starting to ship gay couples in anime...
I COULD FINALLY SEE A GAY KISS BEING ANIMATED IN A SHONEN!!!
(I insist, in such a beautiful and perfect way)
So no matter what you think about this ship, about Koko and Inupi relationship, no matter if you like it or you hate it...
What happened yesterday was really important for a lot of people. Because having referents, can save queer people lives. Is that simple.
So thanks Liden Films, thanks Ken Wakui 💜
Tumblr media
Of course, I also had a big hype when this scene happened in the manga and Wakui gave us so much gay subtext (not so subtle most of the time), that I could make a whole post about queerness in Tokyo Revengers. But let's be honest, there is a lot of only anime watchers out there. Or a lot of people that, like me, discovered manga thanks to anime.

Anime-only adaptations I really enjoyed
I really loved how the anime staff pour their love in the flashback and in the parts where the characters are described the most (bc, in the end, TR is a story driven by characters, not plot), so yeah, kudos for the kokonui, kakuiza and Kisaki centric parts that were not in thee manga and that were added as a ponderate choice by the anime team.
In chronological order
When Takemichi calls him with his nickname "Kaku-chan", Kakucho hesitates before killing him, while in the manga (ch.134) when Izana orders him to kill Takemichi, he just does it with no mercy. The result is the same, but in the anime we saw Kakucho's struggle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The parts about Koko and Inupi, their past and their fight (2x21 or ep.8 of the 2nd coure of S2). It is a very emotional and crude part also in the manga, but in the anime, thanks to some changes/adaptations/voice acting and music, manages to be even more emotional and impactful, while remaining faithful to the manga. That's how an adaptation should be done
First of all, the kiss
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while, story-wise, it's clear the kiss is not fanservice, but an important moment to understand their past and their complicated relationship, no one can deny the anime kiss looks even more passionate than the manga version
Among the people that approached Koko in the manga for money reasons, only Izana and Taiju were mentioned (ch.159), meanwhile in the manga, besides them, were added also Madarame Shion - an anime only addition-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and the Haitani Brothers, as a nod to Wakui's birthday art for Koko
I already talked about it here and partially here but, in short, I like how the anime underlines even better that Koko considers himself unredeemable and incapable of detach his own identity to make money illegally
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and honestly, peak adaptation: the transition to younger Koko to Tenjiku!Koko saying the same line, to make us understand that Koko still feels incredibly guilty about the past...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... and the fact both Inupi and Koko cry in this scene, a moment that there wasn't in the manga and that was an incredibly beautiful and touching addition
Tumblr media
but while manga!Koko -ch.159- at this point is just resigned and "colder" in his decision to stay with Tenjiku, just like also manga!Inupi already calmed down, anime!Inupi is both fed up with the situation but willing to makes things right and very determined..
Tumblr media
while anime!Koko is destroyed, he doesn't even stand up when Inupi punches him (I already talked about it here)
Tumblr media
the little addition of Kakucho in the flashback when Shinichiro goes to say hi to Izana to take him out with him. Izana's favourite people "interacting" was nice (too bad the animation quality was a little meh in this episode, but I understand we can't have peak quality all the time)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kakucho with Izana when he finds again Karen by chance and she tells his she's not his biological mother and he's not related to any of the Sano. It the manga Izana was alone, adding Kakucho was nice because the situation is still terrible, Izana sees his whole world collapsing on himself, but at least he has Kakucho
Tumblr media Tumblr media
last one, Kisaki's "I wanted to be like you" that humanizes him a little. In the manga his death was quick and brutal. We can understands, reading the manga, he had this superiority/inferiority complex towards Takemichi, but the anime explains it more clearly (I talked a bit about it here )
Tumblr media
Maybe there's something else that was an anime-only adaptation that made sense, even improved the already existent narration, but I probably don't remember it. These are the ones that imho, are the most important both for the characters and the narration.
I love how Liden Film followed faithfully the story but added "more heart" to it, that's what a good adaptation should do

I’m such a slut for making Kokonui fuck/make out in front of me, esp if they play up how shy n needy they are
This 🥵🥵🥵
They're like adorable toys that you can play with for your amusement. Make em both edge each other, whining and eventually begging for mercy — you're unsure whether they're begging you for mercy or each other at that point.
Make em kiss and finger the other. Make em frot with each other or hump the other with their clothing still on. Just... have them put on a real show, like the good little whores they are 💕

KOKONUI THROUGH THE YEARS
BONTEN TIMELINE!
AN: Lol I'm way too inspired. These are just my thoughts and headcanons. I ship them. And I love them. I'd love to write about them, and I'll probably do.
my masterlist!
- Seishu and Koko met when they were 5. Koko thought he was a foreigner so he didn't talk to him for some time, until he heard a bad word coming from the blonde's mouth. His first instinct was to scold him, but then he realized the quiet guy was not European as he firstly had thought. He spoke Japanese, but he didn't talk too much.
- Turns out, his mother was from Estonia, and married a Japanese man. Both of them moved after his sister was born, and Seishu was born and raise a full Japanese kid.
- Returning to their friendship, Koko and Seishu quickly became friends. Or that was what Seishu thought the whole year.
- Koko didn't know what they were, because Seishu only spoke when he had to curse someone or to tell him bless you when he sneezed. But when Seishu's birthday came around and he was the only guest, their friendship consolidated. It was that same day when he met the love of his life.
- Akane Inui was only 11 when she was introduced to Kokonoi Hajime. She grabbed his cheeks and told him how cute he was before going back to her room to do her homework. Little did she know that the black haired guy's life was about to change. Seishu didn't understand a thing, so he kept watching cartoons while eating his birthday cake.
- Seishu used to receive a lot of attention because of his looks. People noticed he was a foreigner, and that was cool. However, the moment his sailor mouth was put to work, girls will fly away from him. And he was happy with it! Girls were boring anyway, and they had cooties. Koko slapped his face everytime that happened.
- Kokonoi was used to receive praise because of his marks. His parents weren't really strict with him, but still expected him to be as successful as them. Seishu thought it was great to have someone's homework to copy. He only had to answer Koko's questions about his sister, which he lied about most of the time. Don't judge him, but he didn't know what was her favorite food or which character she wanted to marry from that famous J-drama.
- Seishu loved cars and bikes. He had a collection of hot wheels that filled two entire shelves. Neither of his parents knew where his love came from, but they were happy watching their usually quiet son singing Grease Lightning from the top of his lungs.
- Koko liked board games. He was the best at Monopoly and Cluedo. His father knew that his son was made for the world of strategies and economy. He brought him as much as he could to his office to prepare him for his future.
- When Akane died, a big part of their friendship did too. Koko was not the same, but neither was Seishu. After the funeral, her name was not mentioned for years in their conversations. In fact, their talks were almost empty of content.
- Seishu filled his emptiness with violence, and Koko with money. Their paths were together only for the sake of a friendship that was slowly dying.
- When the Tenjiku fight occurred, Seishu thought about telling him about the kiss. About how he was completely aware of what was happening but didn't dare to move. About how he didn't refuse because maybe he wanted it to happen. But he decided to stay silent, because he knew that if he spoke, the little hope that he still held to revive their friends could fade away. It wasn't useful anyway, because their paths took different ways that day.
- Strange as it may sound, Seishu wasn't sad. Maybe nostalgic, but not sad. He knew that their friendship didn't die after the fight; their friendship ended the day Koko saved him instead of Akane. That didn't mean Seishu didn't care about him. He was sure he loved Koko. But he was a rational human being (sometimes too rational for his own good) and the best option was to let him go, until both of their hearts could get over the hole that Akane left.
- Koko decided to follow Mikey. Another blonde to the collection. Sanzu was the strangest creature that he had ever seen, but he was good at poker. After the KMG recruited new members, he discovered that the Haitanis were infuriating, but they knew how to make money (he had to make some deals with Ran before). Mochi was always asking him to but things on the Internet because he didn't know how to use technologies. Kakucho was the kindest out of them, but he looked like he wasn't aware of anything half of the time, so he decided to not speak too much to him.
- Seishu was doing fine. He finally found some guys to call friends. He was invited to parties and he finally decided to develop his love and sexual life. He finally was Inui Seishu, not Akane's brother or Koko's dog. But he couldn't help but wonder about a certain brunette. So he searched him. Day and night. But he never succeeded in the task.
- They are 25. He is a millionaire (and a criminal) and Seishu works in a shop that makes enough money to pay his bills.
Koko decided to pay him a visit. He looked through the dirty window and he saw him. He was wearing a plaid shirt and was laughing about something that Draken said. Koko smiled. At least one of them found happiness. He thought about going inside. But he left when he noticed a pair of green eyes looking straight at the window.
- They are 30, one living in a small town with a big doy, and the other saving the ass of one coworker who had been shot. Seishu always wanted a Golden Retriever.
- They are 45, with a few wrinkles more, one taking his son to his mother's house, and the other making sure his door was locked correctly. He didn't want to have the same fate as the Haitanis.
- They are 50. Seeing each other in a police office, one to make report that a few pieces were robbed at his shop, the other after being suspect of a first degree murder.
They are 50 but once they were 5.
Once they were 12.
Once they were 15
and they'll forever remain 20.
