✨Teaser: In Technicolor✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So some of you may know this, but my next fic that was set to release was originally called “Ballad of a Teenage Dream” and was a Wednesday x Skam crossover that showcased all the highs and lows of high school and the growing pains that come with the transition from teenager to young adult.
Well that story has been reworked, overhauled, and given new life.
I present to you my high school dramady, In Technicolor.
Set in Los Angeles, California, the story follows two groups of friends as their worlds collide. A modern spin on the social dynamics of Romeo and Juliet where two factions are warring but cannot remember why or why their bitter rivalry is so important to their identity, In Technicolor highlights the feuding of the wealthy and the everyday citizens to show the consequences that come from stripping culture and history from the city streets in the name of gentrification. It explores the complex relationships of families on either side of the fence to reveal that wealth does not always bring happiness. And finally, at the center of it all, the complicated friendships and relationships of the members of these two groups as they meld into one.
For our East LA champions, we follow the Addams siblings and their mismatched group of skateboarders, graffiti artists, musicians, and street racers.
For our Palisades elite, we focus on the Blossoms and Galpin’s—two families from extreme wealth that are not entirely honest about what they show the world.
.
.
.
Important Story Information: If the visuals were not enough to give it away, this story will be a crossover with a different fandom. Entering the mix is the ensemble from Riverdale. I do want to caution readers now, there will be crossover pairings, character retcon on both sides, ageing up, ageing down, and changes to character personalities.
One such example is that Wednesday isn’t allergic to color and isn’t entirely unapproachable. She smiles and laughs but only when around those she trusts like her family and friends. Pugsley has been aged up and is Wednesday’s twin brother. My face claim for this version of Pugsley is Xolo Mariduẽna and I have made Pugsley (who also will be going by “Lee”) more confident and hotheaded with some snark and sass. Second to that, my face claim for Pubert “Bertie” Addams is Malachi Barton and Pubert/Bertie will be one year younger than his siblings—the twins Wednesday and Pugsley age 17 and in their senior year and Bertie age 16 entering his junior year.
On the Riverdale side of the crossover, I have made certain changes that I don’t want to reveal just yet for Archie’s character. That surprise will come soon enough because next I will be posting moodboards for specific couples that will be at the center of this story. But one change I will discuss now to get it out there to avoid hate comments and harassment is the issue of is Cheryl bi or is she a lesbian. In my story, she’s bi and will be paired with a male lead. I understand that the actress for her character went back and forth on Cheryl’s orientation but, to me, Cheryl reads like a chaotic bisexual that goes back and forth on her identity because being bi is confusing enough. And as someone who is bi, I would like to see more representation and fiction for people like myself because fandoms are so quick to erase bisexuality and pansexuality and criticize us when we speak up about it. So in this story, Cheryl is bi and she has broken up with her most recent girlfriend before meeting her next partner who is a man. And it’s fine.
If this upsets you, just swipe off of this post. Don’t leave mean comments or take digs at me because I’m not for any of this fandom infighting nonsense. It’s fiction and these characters can be whatever you want them to be in your stories.
However, if you don’t mind Cheryl liking both men and women, you don’t have an opinion either way, or your curious to see how this’ll pan out, stay tuned. I’d love to share this story with you. All are welcome so long as things stay civil and breezy.
So with that, I look forward to updating with the couple’s board and then the first chapter titlecard along with the chapter itself. Until then, stay lovely and stay groovy.💜

Kabesang Tales - Isang Rap en Rol Musical
A Filipino Musical that hasn't left my mind since the mid 2010s
Tumblr media
Poster for Kabesang Tales posted by Palakat Batangas City via Facebook
Although the Philippines is known for its many talented singers which include many that had crossed over to Broadway such as Lea Salonga, and Rachelle Ann Go, alongside many other Filipino-American talents like Conrad Ricamora, Arielle Jacobs, George Salazar, and Darren Criss just to name a few, the musical scene in the Philippines itself isn't as popular nor as successful in the country as it really should be.
Even with Filipino-majority musicals in states like the controversial Broadway musical "Here Lies Love" which narrates the life story of Imelda Marcos, one of the most controversial figures in Filipino politics and history today, and with Filipino stars often taking in lead or secondary roles in major productions, the musical boom of the 2010s did not come with a boom for the musical industry in the local level compared to the sudden popularity of American musicals like Hamilton, Heathers, Dear Evan Hansen, or Be More Chill to name a few.
The very few musicals that did garner the spotlight did not receive the same notoriety of these foreign productions save for one of the few musical movies to have gotten major media acclaim Loy Arcena's Ang Larawan (2017) (en. The Portrait) based on the 1997 play of the same name by National Artist Nick Joaquin which became a media frenzy as being maybe one of the few if not the only original movie not based on major series or created by a large production company to be released that year for the Metro Manila Film Festival. One of the things that had skyrocketed it to media attention was the fact that most theaters did not screen it and it was only shown in very few cinemas, but that's a story for another time.
Despite the time and devotion Filipino musical fans may have for theatre, rarely do Filipino made and produced musicals ever enter the pop culture zeitgeist due to many factors like the lack of advertising, accessibility issues, and honestly the lack of cast recordings. Out of the many throughout the 2010s, one of the few I was able to watch that I still think about at times is Ricky Lee's very own rap and rock musical Kabesang Tales.

Kabesang Tales - Isang Rap en Rol Musical) (en. Captain Tales - A Rap n' Roll Musical) is a rap and rock musical first performed in the year 2015 and was written by renowned Filipino writer and National Artist Ricky Lee. The musical was directed by Alejandro "Bong" Ramos, with music by Jeffrey Hernandez and Alfredo Ongleo, and produced by Red Lantern Production (Inquirer, 2015).

The musical stars John Arcilla as the titular character Telesforo Juan "Kabesang Tales" De Dios, famously known for his breakout role as Hen. Anotnio Luna in the historical film Heneral Luna released the same year as the musical, alongside other talents such as Dio Marco as Karyo, Kevin Posadas as Tano de Dios, Alecx Lorica as Juli De Dios among many other talented actors (Inquirer, 2015).
Tumblr media
A cover of one of the book's translations posted by twitter user El Filibusterismo (@/joseriz15155899) via X/Twitter
The play is based on Jose Rizal's El Filibusterismo (en. The Filibuster) and more specifically, the character of Kabesang Tales, the head of his barangay (a sort of Filipino village) and father of Basilio's main love interest Juli, who had turned into a guerilla bandit after his family and life were ruined by the Spanish friars. He becomes the feared Matanglawin (en. Hawkeye) who terrorizes the countryside. He plays a minor but important role in the books, being the father of one of the main secondary characters as well as being one of the main allies of the primary characters as they tried to start a revolution in the country.
The play primarily focuses on his perspective throughout the whole book with some scenes focusing more on the main protagonists Simoun and Basilio as well as his daughter Juli.
Performances and Releases
The musical had limited performances throughout some parts of the CALABARZON Region or Region IV-A, with some select performances in Metro Manila as well as some other provinces like in Mindoro, sometime during the years 2015-2017 with some being done in local cultural centers and schools throughout the region with very limited promotion outside of news stories.
The only promotional material I could really find are some posts on Facebook and a trailer in the Red Lantern Production's YouTube channel which could be seen here:
youtube
Trailer uploaded by Red Lantern Production via YouTube
There are no original cast recordings that I could find of any of the songs and the only material that I could find besides this are uploads on YouTube of scattered scenes from different parts of the play:

Full Playlist uploaded by YouTube channel pheejaypi here
I was also able to find a collection of clips of Karyo, a character possibly named after Karyo from Mga Ibong Madaragit which is a continuation novel of the El Filibusterismo written by Amado Hernandez, played by Terrence Guillermo.
youtube
Video uploaded by YouTube channel pinoy music maestro here
I remember some time in the 2010s seeing uploads of members of the cast singing in interviews I believe but I could no longer find any of these videos.
As of now, it is unknown if the production will ever come back with the last post on the Facebook page having been in 2021 with a post prior to posted on July 2019 calling for auditions in August 2019, possibly hinting that there was a planned 2020 tour for the musical before the pandemic hit.

The Plot (mostly from memory)
As there's barely any material of the live musical, I'll do my best to recollect what I could remember with the aide of the actual books to guide me. Of course, spoilers for Rizal's books Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo if you haven't read them.
The plot follows the events of El Filibusterismo but mainly from the perspective of the titular character Kabesang Tales. It begins with an extremely happy and optimistic scene with him, his family, and barangay as well as the visit of Basilio, Tales's daughter's lover to their house. I remember that there was an extremely cheesy song here between the two that a lot of people squealed over.
Tumblr media
Photo of the mentioned musical number between Basilio and Juli posted by Jayson Pascua
The perspective switches over to Basilio and his visit to his mother's grave where he is shocked to see a man there who is revealed to be the thought to be dead fugitive Crisostomo Ibarra who now goes by Simoun, a jewelry merchant from the United States. The two have a bit of an argument where Simoun tries to convince Basilio to join him and his rebellion and I don't recall exactly if there was a song, but it seems likely.
Perspective switches back to Tales as tragedy strikes as his entire family gets struck with malaria resulting in the death of his wife. I don't remember all the details here or if there was a song, but I remember a sort of depressing atmosphere for the rest of this part.
Tumblr media
Photo showing all of the actors playing the De Dios Family posted by Jayson Pascua
The family struggles with money and friars come over to cause even more problems for them. There's a rap battle here between Tales and a friar. Here starts his downward spiral as he struggles to make ends meet as well as handle the friars that had been trying to gain his land. I don't recall if it's shown that he has to pay for a lot of lawyers, but he starts paying more and more for legal fees because of the legal drama with the friars and the government.
My sister tells me that there's a song about how good the friars are before they get properly introduced and I have a hazy memory of three friars wearing varied outfits typically associated with friars posing for the stage as people sing songs of praise and goodwill. My sister tells me that Basilio was in the ensemble here.
His son, Tano, gets drafted to the Guardia Civil (en. Civil Guard) and sent to the Caroline Islands because Tales could not pay money to prevent his draft due to their financial struggles. This is shown as a heart wrenching scene in the play where the rest of the family is left distraught.
He starts guarding his property in fear of bandits possibly taking his fields and taking whatever he has left.
Tales then gets taken by these bandits who demand ransom money for his return. There he meets Karyo, one of its leaders who tells him about the struggles of the working class and why he and the others had resorted to being bandits in the first place (?). I don't actually remember if this is the first they meet or what since I do remember that the two have a philosophical discussion about violence later and that Karyo is definitely a member of the bandits but there are scenes where he acts as the emcee during Tales's rap battle with the friar.
The bandits later lets him go back to his family where he finds that he has no one left.
Juli, in order to help with her family's financial struggles as well as pay for her father's ransom, leaves home and asks for loans and find work.
If I'm not mistaken, his father Tandang Selo goes mute with the grief of the continuous tragedies that had struck the family as well. It's hard for me to remember if this was shown in the musical.
When Tales returns, he finds himself at a loss for what has happened to his family. He is left with his daughter forced to work and his father mute. He is then met with Simoun, who comes to him as a jeweler. Simoun tempts him with some ideas of radicalization against the friars and he refuses at first before spiraling further and joining Karyo and his bandits, becoming the feared Matanglawin.
I genuinely don't remember if his meeting with Simoun was also in the musical or not but it's important context for the story.
The musical then switches perspective to Basilio, who gets implicated with a conspiracy against the government and gets arrested. A heartbroken Juli goes to Padre Camorra, a creepy priest that's been trying to corner her, to beg for his help since she saw no one else that could help her. This leads into a rather intense scene acted in shadows and lights where it is heavily implied that Juli gets assaulted.
After this, Juli sings a song about her assault where she contemplates getting revenge or retaliating but instead chooses to jump off to end her life.
The scene switches back to Tales who, unlike in the books, meet with his son again who has returned to the Philippines. This one, I know had a song in it since I remembered the extreme daddy issues punk rock vibes the scene gave off. He sang about how he no longer respected his father and that it's too late to repair things if I recall as he's now a bandit and he's a member of the Guardia Civil.

Desolate and distraught at the loss of his family, Tales gets visited by a diwata (a forest spirit/fairy) and this part was extremely out of left field and absolutely not in the books.
Here, the diwata shows Tales visions of the future (???) and directly tells him, without any sort of subtlety, that the working class, and especially farmers like him, will continue to struggle in his country in the future. He is then shown a scene of farmers in a protest who were then taken down by police in what I remember as riot gear. He contemplates the future and is further given resolve to continue his rebellion.

Another photo of the mentioned scene where Tales is sent to the future by a diwata to witness farmers being taken down by cops in riot gear posted by Jayson Pascua
I need to cut in and say that this was so on the nose and is by far the weirdest and personally maybe the worst part of the show. I'm not even against the message, it just ruined my immersion and just left a weird taste in my mouth. I think the play was doing a plenty good job driving that point across already without the time travel diwata scene but maybe that's just me.
The scene cuts back to the climax of the story where Basilio, distraught over then death of Juli, finally joins Ibarra as they plant a bomb in a wedding reception that the Governor-General of the Philippines was attending. The scene plays out like it was in the books where the lamp gets tossed out by Isagani and the revolution doesn't start.
It goes back to a scene of Tales and his men trying to fight the Guardia Civil where he is shot and killed in action, by the gun of his own son. Tano realizes what he has done and is horrified. This leads to a song which later leads to a finale that sings about Tales as the cast come together for the curtains to close.

The musical ends and the cast is called on to the stage one by one, with the loudest applause going to Basilio who a lot of the girls found hot, and of course, the man himself, Kabesang Tales.
Tumblr media
Photo of the closing song with Tales being shown front and center posted by Jayson Pascua
After the play and final thoughts
Ricky Lee actually attended the performance I watched and I remember so many people crowding around the actors to get their autographs. My sister bought one of Ricky Lee's book, his script writing guide "Trip to Quiapo" and had it signed but she genuinely can't find it anymore sadly. My sister also got the autograph of some of the actors and the director on that same book so I'm a little miffed that we can't find it.
I would discuss more things and even show off my old ticket but I'm pretty sure that I would end up doxxing myself if I speak any more details.
That's all I remember from it and I would love to say more or even discuss the songs but as you can see, I could barely remember them, with only maybe a solid grasp in about maybe four songs.
It's a shame that it doesn't have as much of an established release and media presence because despite that one glaring issue I had with the weird diwata scene, I quite enjoyed the musical and it remains one of the few that I actually got to experience live.
It isn't Les Miserables or Hamilton, but it's still a musical I'll probably fondly remember especially since El Filibusterismo is one of my favorite books of all time with the character of Kabesang Tales being one of the most interesting — a man of honor and virtue who slowly descends into extremist violence because society had failed him. It's sad to see this musical barely recognized and very little talked about today and I do hope that it will one day return to the stage.

“Please let’s talk about this.”
Warnings: Smut! 18+! fluff! swearing! c*m! and c*m swallowing!
Joaquin Wilde x Cruz Del Toro x Male OC DeAndre MxMxM
Tumblr media
One night on Friday night Smackdown a few minutes before the WWE draft, Joaquin and Cruz walk up to their boyfriend DeAndre Garcia in catering. “Hey baby” Joaquin smiles at him and Cruz sits down next to him, “Why are you sitting here all by yourself?” Cruz says smiling. DeAndre looks at him “I tried to ask Zelina if she wanted to sit with me, but she was getting ready for her match against Asuka with Santos and Rey in her corner.” he sighs a little and frowns a little bit.
Tumblr media
Santos walks up to DeAndre from behind, “What about me, Zelina and Rey?” he says laughing a little bit, DeAndre falls backwards in his chair into Santos’ hands and arms “Geez, Santos!!” he sighs a little again. Joaquin looks at Santos “Really dude? Come on now!” Santos looks at him “I’m sorry, I didn't mean to startle him” DeAndre looks at Santos again “It’s okay, I forgive you. Just please don't do that again” “I won't do it again, I promise” Santos says looking down at Joaquin and Cruz who smiles slightly a little.
Tumblr media
DeAndre stands up “I’m going to go back to work and sew some pants and ring gear for Sami, Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns, The Usos and Solo” Cruz looks at him “Okay, we'll see you in a few minutes after the draft” DeAndre goes back to his sewing machine and gets back to work. Santos sits next to Joaquin and Cruz “Are you guys dating him or something because you guys keep looking at him with love in your eyes.” Cruz nods a little, Joaquin smiles “Yes, we are. Just don't tell Rey, Zelina or anyone else” Santos nods.
Tumblr media
Zelina walks up to them, “Cruz, Joaquin your boyfriend is waiting for you guys in your hotel room” Cruz looks at Zelina a little shocked because she knows that they are dating DeAndre “Okay, we'll be back in a few hours” Santos and Zelina nod as Cruz leaves with Joaquin, DeAndre opens the door and immediately starts making out with them and making love to them. “Fuck~ this feels so good” They smile and chuckle, “It does” They start thrusting faster and faster in his ass and mouth, he moans louder while sucking Joaquin's dick. “Oh fuck~” They thrust deeper until they c*m a lot inside of DeAndre’s ass and throat.
Tumblr media
Cruz and Joaquin take care of the messes and they take a shower with DeAndre, “Thank you babe and honey for a wonderful night” They both nod and say you're welcome to him, Zelina walks in with Santos and Rey they all sit down on the couch and wait for him, Cruz and Joaquin to walk out of the bedroom. Eventually after a few minutes they finally walk out their bedroom, cuddle while watching a movie with Zelina, Rey and Santos, then they finally go to sleep. Zelina goes to her Hotel room with Santos they go to sleep cuddling after Rey goes to his Hotel room.

It hurt her to think about it, to imagine going back to a life without Archie.  She would miss him – she already missed him, and he was standing right in front of her.  She missed the feeling of security that used to come with his presence, the knowledge that he would never let anything bad happen to her.  She would miss making breakfast together, dancing around the kitchen as they cooked.  She would miss their sleepovers, climbing into his bed after a nightmare or staying up all night catching up on their lives, until she was too tired to return to the other room.  More than anything, though, she would miss having a big brother.
She would even miss her tentative friendship with Veronica, the evenings spent playing dress up with her and Kevin, the group chat they’d shared.  She remembered the SoDale Open House, how Veronica had trusted her, and only her, to protect her from Nick St Clair.  She remembered the Matchelorette party, and the games of Secrets And Sins, even the outfits that still lived in the back of Jughead’s closet.  She had thought that maybe she could be friends with the heiress, but Veronica had actively and enthusiastically assisted her father, and Amy could no longer be sure if their friendship had ever been genuine, or if she had always been laying the groundwork for Hiram.
She wouldn’t miss Betty, though.  Would never miss the judgemental stares and holier-than-thou hypocrisy.  She wouldn’t miss the way the blonde thought that a single speech made up for a lifetime of derision towards the Southside, wouldn’t miss the way she talked about Amy or her partners.
But she would miss Jughead, if he chose the blonde.  She would miss everything about the boy, from his beanie to his literary references to the way he always pushed his plate closer to her when she wasn’t eating.  She would miss the flirting and how easily he blushed and the way he fit so perfectly with them, as if they were always meant to be five – or six, once Joaquin was back with them.  She would miss the way he defended her to the other Serpents, even before they had become friends, and the way that he always seemed to know what she needed to hear.  She would miss being on the same wavelength as him, working as a perfect team without needing to talk about it.  She would miss –
Her train of thought was interrupted by Jughead catching her eye, watching her with obvious concern, and Amy realized something.  He hadn’t chosen, yet.  She hadn’t lost him, and maybe she wouldn’t.

Looking Ahead to 2024
With the new year finally here, I thought this would be a good time to list the films I am most excited about coming to theaters in 2024. So I present the films I am most excited about coming out this year (in alphabetical order):
Ballerina
Spinning out of the John Wick films comes this action thriller starring Ana de Armas that takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.
Beetlejuice 2
Apparently, it took 36 years for someone to say his name three times because Beetlejuice is back! Tim Burton directs the sequel starring original stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara and joined by new addition Jenna Ortega.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
I'll be honest, I really liked Beverly Hills Cop III and am disappointed we never got to see the 2013 CBS pilot about Axel Foley's son. Count me in for the fourth film coming to Netflix this year.
Deadpool 3
The lone Marvel Studios film coming in 2024 is a continuation of the Fox Deadpool series. But with Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine, this one is one to watch.
Dune: Part Two
Return to Arrakis with director Denis Villeneuve for this adaptation of the second half of Frank Herbert’s Dune. Originally slated for a late 2023 release, it is finally coming this year.
The Fall Guy
Ryan Gosling is a stuntman turned investigator in this action comedy, based on a 1980s TV series, co-starring Emily Blunt, Winston Duke, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Anya Taylor-Joy is Furiosa in this origin story focused on Charlize Theron's character from Fury Road.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
The Splenger kids are back in this sequel to 2021's Afterlife (and the fourth film in the Ghostbusters series).
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 and Chapter 2
While this may be two films, let's count it as one. Coming this year is Kevin Costner's epic Western Horizon. And don't forget, Costner has plans for four Horizon films.
IF
John Krasinski writes and directs this fantasy comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as a man who can see people's imaginary friends.
Joker: Folie a Deux
Joaquin Phoenix returns as the Joker is joined by Lady Gaga has Dr. Harleen Quinzel in this sequel to 2019's award-winning Joker.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Guy Ritchie directs Henry Cavill in this action spy film about the British black ops during WWII.
Twisters
As a huge fan of 1996's Twister, I am ready for more. More twisters.
Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story
Is 2024 the year we finally see Jerry Seinfeld's film about the origins of Pop-Tarts for Netflix? I sure hope so.
Wolfs
Jon Watts writes and directs this psychological action-thriller starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
Honorable Mention (films not mentioned above): Argylle, Madame Web, Drive-Away Dolls, Road House, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Abigail, Civil War, Challengers, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Inside Out 2, Bad Boys 4, The Bikeriders, A Quiet Place: Day One, Project Artemis, Alien: Romulus, Kraven the Hunter, Venom 3, Alto Knights, Red One, Gladiator 2, Wicked: Part One, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Nosferatu.
Now for a quick look ahead to 2024, my top picks for that year are Avatar 3, The Batman - Part II, Captain America: Brave New World, Fantastic Four, Mission: Impossible 8, Superman: Legacy, and any of the above-mentioned films that get bumped to 2025.
Looking back at the 15 films on my Looking Ahead to 2023 list from last year: I saw 13 in theaters, one was bumped to 2024 and is included above, and one I didn't get a chance to see yet thanks to the flu. (sorry Wonka).

2023 in Movies, My Autumn/Winter Top Ten Runners-Up Rundown
20.  FERRARI – returning after almost eight years in the cinematic wilderness (outside of producing credits and ushering in TV like Tokyo Vice, anyway), director Michael Mann definitely seems to be back with a bang with this opulent, intense and emotionally charged biopic telling the story of automotive pioneer Enzo Ferrari’s 1957 battle to claw his company out of the looming pit of bankruptcy while beset by the crippling recent loss of his son Dino and his tempestuous relationship with his wife and business partner Laura (Penelope Cruz).
19.  SAW X – after years of wallowing in the frustrating mires of diminishing levels of quality, Leigh Whannel’s twisted but sometimes downright BRILLIANT slasher horror franchise has FINALLY got itself back on track with this intriguing (sort of) prequel directed by long-serving series alumnus Kevin Greutert, which see the socially-conscious serial killer with a very specific CAUSE, master trap engineer John Kramer (the always awesome Tobin Bell), go off proper biblical on a gang of con artists who have NO IDEA who they just tried to take advantage of while he struggles with his encroaching terminal cancer …
18.  THE HOLDOVERS – despite trying to play itself off as an old school throwback, Sideways director Alexander Payne’s latest top-notch comedy drama feels wonderfully fresh and DEFINITELY relevant, especially since I was finally able to check it out in the middle of the Festive period of 2023.  Paul Giamatti delivers a career best turn as Paul Hunham, a curmudgeonly classics teacher at an elite boarding Academy in the 1970s who ends up the designated staff member overseeing the handful of misanthropic teenage students who find themselves trapped on campus over the Christmas break with nowhere to go.
17.  WISH – so, does this do a good enough job of marking 100 years of Disney animated features?  I dunno … but it IS a fun movie all the same, a typically spellbinding piece of work from a studio who’ve long since proved they can pull off this kind of movie-making in their sleep.  A big part of the charm in this musical fantasy adventure is Ariana DeBose (West Side Story, Schmigadoon!) as wilful, imaginative peasant girl Asha and her complicated struggle with Chris Pine as King Magnifico, the powerful wizard who wants to exploit the magical sentient star she just wished upon for his own nefarious ends …
16.  NAPOLEON – Ridley Scott’s long awaited return to epic historical cinema may not be QUITE the comeback masterpiece we’ve been hoping for, but there’s no denying this is still a very impressive piece of work and a MASSIVE filmmaking achievement in an artform which is in imminent danger of dying out in the current market.  Joaquin Phoenix clearly really relished his opportunity to reteam with Scott after Gladiator, letting rip with gusto as the complicated French general and tyrant whose story is told here less through the course of his many impressive but bloody victories than his tumultuous relationship with his beloved Empress Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).
15.  MY ANIMAL – sneaking in under the radar to capture my attention entirely by chance, this enjoyably offbeat, erotically charged coming-of-age werewolf horror indie from debuting director Jacqueline Castel tells an intriguingly POTENT tale of dangerous forbidden passions and burgeoning sexual self-discovery as teenage Canadian lycanthrope Heather (I Love Dick’s Bobbi Salvor Menuez) falls desperately in love with Johny (The Hunger Games and The Hate U Give’s Amandla Stenberg), a new arrival in her snowbound early 80s mountain town.
14.  SITTING IN BARS WITH CAKE – another one which largely snuck in under the radar, this time onto Amazon Prime, an irrepressibly adorable romantic comedy drama from director Trish Sie (Pitch Perfect 3) which largely avoids the usual pitfalls that tend to turn me off about these kinds of movies by instead ultimately being about the unstoppable power of FRIENDSHIP as cripplingly shy LA girl Jane (The Sun Is Also a Star’s Yara Shahidi) uses freshly baked cakes as an ice breaker at the urging of her extroverted best friend Corinne (Hellraiser 2022’s Odessa A'zion) as a means to boost her self-confidence.
13.  SUZUME – once again Disney gets eclipsed by an anime, it would seem … yeah, the latest offering from whimsical master writer-director Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, Weathering With You) is another absolute WINNER, following the misadventures of Kyushu highschooler Iwato Suzume as she accidentally unleashes an ancient, potentially massive destructive force intent on opening hidden dimensional doors all over Japan which would spell immense cataclysmic chaos if she doesn’t find a way to stop it.
12.  REBEL MOON, PART ONE: A CHILD OF FIRE – okay, so here we go … yeah, this is gonna be a TRICKY one, since I KNOW that we’re only really getting HALF the movie here, with the as yet unreleased Director’s Cut of the first part of Zack Snyder’s epic sci-fi extravaganza for Netflix promising to be the much more complete package, and I can definitely see how that could to be a potential MASTERPIECE.  So while this is notable for the fact that this will probably be the very first movie to place in TWO YEARS of my rundowns, this is ultimately just a placeholder.  But it definitely deserved it, so I couldn’t NOT.  Please don’t AT ME, guys, this should hopefully all get cleared up in 2024 …
11.  KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON – while Martin Scorsese’s latest super-long epic historical biopic just isn’t the undeniable stone-cold MASTERPIECE that 2019’s The Irishman was, this adaptation of David Grann’s potent novel retelling the dark and bloody tale of the Osage Indian Murders is still a proper belter from one of the greatest filmmakers around.  Leonardo Dicaprio plays things a lot darker than usual as Ernest Burkhart, the money-grubbing husband out to exploit the fortune of his unwitting Native American wife Mollie (Certain Women’s Lily Gladstone, a revelation here) at the behest of his monstrous crime boss uncle William King Hale (Robert De Niro).

Kiss
Summary: Serpent General,Jughead brings everyone to the Wyrm, Nick St. Clair tags along
TW: Homophobic language at the end
”You sure this is okay Jughead?” Archie seems nervous and Jughead just rolls his eyes.
“Yeah it’s fine for you and Ronnie to be here, I just didn’t expect her to bring along daddy’s boy.”
“Nick.” Nick St. Clair snaps and Jughead just smirks.
“Aw poor baby, did you have to walk to a bar, are you upset cause we don’t have fancy bar stools so you can impress pretty girls before you drug them?” Jughead laughs, Fangs and Sweet Pea join in laughing, Nick snarls and Veronica keeps her hand on his shoulder.
“Easy Nick, they’re just teasing, they’re into tough love here. Right guys?”
“Mhm, Peaches gimme a whiskey, I gotta mock Nick more.”
“Really, no. You’re still underage.”
“You’re the same age as me!”
“Mhm, and I don’t drink whiskey.”
“You were drinking fucking vodka and Cheryl’s house party last week with Toni!”
“Don’t drag me into this Pea, sides, what we do in a house is no one’s business but ours, but at the Wyrm, it’s not a good idea, can’t give anyone anymore reason to throw us out. You really want all the Serpent’s upset at you cause you wanted to mock some dressed up pretty boy? Fuck off.” She snaps and SWeet Pea rolls his eyes.
Veronica’s talking to Joaquin and Fangs when Peaches makes her way to Jughead and Archie, Nick laughing with Archie and Peaches rolling her eyes slightly fondly at Archie’s smile. Veronica almost misses that Peaches is off her shift, but when she catches a figure behind the bar she assumes it’s Tall Boy, of course it’s not, and she scowls as she see’s Sweet Pea reaching up to the top shelf, grinning as he pulls a bottle down.
“Tall boy, Sweets took-”
“Don’t matter, he knows we’ll get him back later.”
“Later, that sounds pretty threatening…” Archie looks around realizing there’s suddenly way more Serpents than there were before.
“Mhm, we have a meeting, deal with him later.”
“Oh shit should we be here?” Archie can’t help the panic that rises in his voice, Kevin laughs a little, finally having pulled away from whatever they were both doing, Veronica decides that she doesn’t really want to know, either assuming they were whispering sweet nothings to each other or getting more than handsy under the table they were cuddling at.
“Well it’s more a speech, Fangs, come on don’t back out now.”
“Oh is this a Serpent trail thing?” Kevin tilts his head and Joaquin just grins, almost laughing, Peaches nudges Sweet Pea clearly trying to get him to pay attention but he just kicks her shin until she shoves his head towards the stage that Fangs nervously stands on.
“No it’s just Fangs finally standing up for himself in a way.” Fangs seems super nervous about whatever he’s going to talk about and he shakes the entire time he’s started talking, thanking everyone for showing up. He seems to get more and more nervous, but manages to take a breath so he’s not shaking when he confesses.
“I’m in love with, and have been in love with him for a very long time, since we were kids, but I love Mark.” The Serpents clearly cheer and everyone else does as well, clearly a little confused but willing to be happy for Fangs and whoever Mark is. Except Nick, he looks pissed, and a little bit like he’s going to be sick and Kevin mumbles the word jealousy to Joaquin who laughs.
“Don’t think Nick has reason to be jealous of Sweet’s but okay…” He chuckles and everyone close by does, Sweet Pea looks nervous, and Nick’s face twists into a snarl.
“You’re all a bunch of fucking fags aren’t you, not one fucking bitch in here is straight, Ronnie why would you bring me here, we should go back to my hotel, away from..” Nick doesn’t finish, Peaches and Toni physically walking him out a dark sort of grin slides onto Joaquin’s face as he kisses Kevin, promising he’ll only be a moment.
When Joaquin returns he’s trying to wipe the blood onto his pants and he scowls playfully at Sweet Pea and Fangs making out.
“So they’re clearly trying to make a run at our cute couple trophy we have babe, better dial up the cuteness tomorrow at school.
