❧ Stardust Ch.2 | Meteor Shower
Hongbin wakes up alone.
He turns toward Jaehwan’s side of the bed and discovers an empty space where fae usually rest, sprawled out across the mattress like a starfish. He sits up quickly, his hair a wretched mess and his eyes wild, and stumbles out of his bedroom.
Fae are not in the bathroom, living room, or kitchen. He does not see them in the front yard, either. For the first time in a long time, their graceful voice does not reach Hongbin’s ears, and the sweet aroma of vanilla does not overwhelm his senses. His apartment is completely silent, and he cannot find his miracle anywhere.
Maybe it was all a dream. Maybe Jaehwan doesn’t really exist.
Hongbin’s chest tightens at the thought of Jaehwan not existing in his world. A little over two months have passed since he wished upon a star and the fairy crash landed into his life. Fae has their own shelf in the refrigerator now and preferences about what movie they want to watch on Wednesday evenings. Their clothes live alongside Hongbin’s in the bedroom closet, there are two toothbrushes in the bathroom instead of one, even the plants on the shelf in the living room have adjusted to the warmth of Jaehwan’s presence. Their leaves are healthy and strong, and some of them have grown flowers.
If Hongbin is dreaming, if all the moments he and Jaehwan shared only occurred in his dreams, he will never forgive the universe for playing such a cruel trick on him.
After running a hand through his hair and taking a heavy seat on the couch, Hongbin glances to the wall at his left. In the center of nearly a dozen framed photos of his family—the people he loves more than anything else in the world—he discovers a polaroid of Jaehwan on the wall. And then another, two more, and a few on the coffee table of them together that they haven’t done anything with yet.
And when the back door unlocks and opens to reveal Jaehwan in one of Hongbin’s sweatshirts with a pair of headphones over their ears and a cassette player hanging from their hip, Hongbin’s heart almost stops because he knows that Jaehwan is real, and he is not alone anymore.
“Jae,” Hongbin breathes as if all the air has been stolen from his lungs.
Jaehwan grins from ear to ear with flushed cheeks and pulls the headphones down, locking the door behind them before half-skipping across the space between them to intertwine Hongbin’s small fingers with their own. The tenderness of the action almost unravels the human right there.
“Did you miss me?” Jaehwan sings softly, drawing Hongbin closer into their orbit as fae brush their fingers across his knuckles.
“I thought I lost you, I thought you were just a dream,” Hongbin babbles when their foreheads touch, his palms trembling as Jaehwan’s hands and their scent and the colors in their eyes anchor him to the Earth. “Where did you go?”
Jaehwan frowns softly and reaches to stop the tape at their hip, cutting off Kate Bush’s Running Up That Road at their favorite part of the song. Hongbin inhales deeply when their warm, gentle hands settle on his cheeks, blinking against the tears filling his eyes. He notices then that Jaehwan wears the pendant he gave them around their neck. The sight of the little piece of jewelry just makes him want to cry more.
“I just went out for a run, bunny,” Jaehwan explains as their bewitching eyes fill with concern. Fae can hear how quickly Hongbin’s heart is beating, how constricted his breathing is, and they don’t like it.
“It’s freezing outside,” Hongbin complains as a few tears fall from his eyes. “Why would you decide to exercise in this weather?”
“The weather does not affect me. Did you see the note I left on the fridge for you?”
“No, I just...I woke up and you weren’t there and everything was so quiet I panicked I thought...I thought you were gone and I was alone again...”
“Hongbin, I would never leave this realm without you. I am right here, and I am real. Do you hear me?”
Hongbin sniffles softly and nods, hiding his face in Jaehwan’s neck as they embrace him.
“I’m not going anywhere...” Jaehwan murmurs, rubbing a hand over Hongbin’s back. “There is nothing in any universe that could ever tempt me to walk away from you.”
“Not even strawberry ice cream?”
“Not even strawberry ice cream,” Jaehwan reassures him, lifting his chin to fit their lips together. Hongbin sighs as he melts in the fairy’s arms. He is already exhausted from the events of the morning and he’s been awake for less than ten minutes. “Let’s go take a bath, okay?”
“A bath?” Hongbin presses himself closer to Jaehwan’s chest—their warmth—as he runs his fingers through their messy hair before tugging the darkening curls between his fingers. He gasps softly when Jaehwan grabs his waist and shudders against them.
Kissing Jaehwan almost always makes Hongbin feel better. It started with Jaehwan leaving small pecks on Hongbin’s cheeks, then the back of his neck and his hands. Always pure and sweet, always fleeting. Ever since Hongbin turned to catch Jaehwan’s lips when they went to the cinema for the first time, their kisses have come to mean so much more. They were still sweet, but sometimes they were playful, greedy, or even amorous. Sometimes, they lasted for what felt like hours. Kissing had also become both a greeting and farewell between the human and the fairy.
It is part of their relationship now, and Hongbin knows it always will be, even though a quiet part of him wants more.
“Yes, dear, a bath,” Jaehwan murmurs, lifting Hongbin with little effort before walking to the bathroom.

❧ Ginger | Kenbin Oneshot
“Fuck,” Jaehwan cursed as he chewed his bottom lip, his fingers smudging the glass in front of him as he watched an orange tabby yawn before taking a big stretch. They had been through the shelter three times already, and he still couldn’t make up his mind. Hongbin wasn’t exactly surprised. Jaehwan was enormously indecisive when they weren’t trying to adopt a small animal. “They’re so cute.”
“You’ve said that about all of them, Jae,” Hongbin responded as he ran his fingers through his boyfriend’s soft, curly hair. It was getting long in the front again. They would have to cut it soon.
“That’s because they’re all adorable!” Jaehwan complained with a small pout on his lips. He watched the tabby traipse around with something like fascination in his dark eyes, releasing an incoherent whine of frustration when they pawed at the glass where his hand was.
“I want them all.”
“You can have one.”
“This is ridiculous!”
“Cats are a lot of responsibility, Jae.”
“These are just babies...” Jaehwan muttered under his breath.
“You’re a baby.”
Hongbin crouched down to where his boyfriend knelt in front of the large glass case containing the orange tabby and a few other kittens that were probably around the same age. The tabby shifted their hazel eyes to him, and he felt his heart tremble. If Jaehwan didn’t pick this one, Hongbin was going to give him hell about it later.
“You adopted a kitten before you met me. How did you know you made the right choice?”
“I didn’t,” Hongbin admitted softly as he remembered the day his mother took him to a shelter like this one to get his first pet. “They chose me. It’s different when you come in by yourself.”
“Different how?”
“Rose knew I was the one for them. Whoever we take home with us knows they’ll have more than one caregiver, and not all cats want that. They know who they want to go home with the moment they walk through the door.”
Hongbin knew the shelter would close in half an hour. For some reason, he couldn’t find it in himself to care or muster up the effort to tell Jaehwan to quickly make up his mind and playfully threaten to drag him home with nothing if he couldn’t. They could always come back and try again tomorrow.
But there was no need to return when both their hearts had already been stolen by the orange tabby right in front of them. Hongbin could already see Jaehwan snuggling them on their living room couch. He knew exactly where they would put their bed and that they would love napping in his office. He knew they would get injured jumping off the kitchen counter, that they would recover quickly, and that they would jump off again once they were older and give them both heart attacks. Hongbin saw them chasing one of their toys out in the backyard on a sunny day, knew that they had a scar on their left ear, and loved them even though they would find a way into the hallway closet and make an absolute mess when he and Jaehwan were out for the first two months until they realized that they should lock the door.
And Hongbin knew that he and Jaehwan would not be their first owners, but he had a feeling that they would be the last. They would be together for a long time, and there would be more cats at some point. He wasn’t sure how, or why, but he was aware of everything.
“Ginger.”
“Hm?”
“Their name is Ginger,” Jaehwan said softly like it was the most obvious thing in the universe. The tabby’s ears twitched, they turned their head slightly, and when Jaehwan glanced at Hongbin with stars in his eyes, he knew that they had been chosen. “I want this one, and I think they want us, too.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive.”
