The Warp Effect Ep 9 Thoughts

Actually this gets long so under a cut:

-Alright back to live-blogging. I did also catch up on H5 and finish Individual Circumstances but I knew I wouldn’t have that much to say about those shows so I didn’t liveblog them. But I’m betting I won’t be able to shut up during The Warp Effect. Something about GMMTV shows activates the “never shutting up” part of my brain I guess. (To be fair, I do never shut up in my real life either)

-Does anyone else feel a sense of calm whenever you hear that “Raikantopini” at the beginning of shows? I’ve been watching BL for -holy shit - a few years now, and just hearing that just makes me thing “okay I’m home and I’m safe and all is good.” No? Just me?

-Oh we’re starting the preview with Biew. Ew. She can get lost. Hate her.

-I love the representation in this show. It’s so very queer.

-Every time I start this show I wonder how the hell it’s gonna end. How can they wrap this up?

-Don’t forget to get tested frequently if you sleep around a lot. And use protection. Just a friendly reminder.

-Oh Ew. Oh precious baby. Someone give him a hug. OH POOR NIM. Bew sucks. Army pounced on the opportunity to help raise that baby though and they aren’t even friends. Ffs Bew really fucked Nim over. I hope Bew never becomes a mother.

-This show has such beautiful messages wrapped up in the most bizarre packaging.

-This smoker is an asshole. Ice is gonna get his ass beat though.

-Okay okay Army and Nim would make weirdly great parents. And now I want a show of them raising that child.

-Oh this is not gonna end well with Army and Joe. Someone is gonna see them. Oh boy oh no. SIR YOU PUT THAT CAMERA AWAY BEFORE I SHOVE IT UP YOUR ASS

-KISS. KISS. MOLLIE AND NIM KISS. DO IT. DO IT. KISS. YEEEEESSSSSSSSS.

-Lmao Nim solved her own damn issue. Alex didn’t do shit. Love that.

-I didn’t expect to get this emotional over Rose and Jedi. Look at those sweeties. Love them.

-Now just how tall is that boy? Tony was towering over those girls.

-Also I love Kat.

-If any other show tried to have half as many messages as The Warp Effect, those shows would fail. Miserably. But it’s working in this show. Because all of the messages have a similar theme and are all related to sex. And it’s working weirdly well. Who would have guessed? Not me that’s for sure.

-Ice and Alex ARE related. Look at Ice coming around to support his girlfriend. Honestly, he just needed some processing time and advice.

-Whyyyyy is this show so fucking good like what the shit is this?

-What in the fuck was that preview? I’d like a refund please. The next episode looks far too painful to exist. Nope I’m currently blocking it from my memory

KAT, STOP BEING MEAN TO ME. Honestly, I'm up to 60-odd productions, and narrowing this down was SO HARD. I peaked in 2018. Except that my NYC trip was in 2017, just a few months past five years ago, so Broadway Backwards and the OBC of Dear Evan Hansen don't count.

That said, here's where we landed. Organized chronologically, to avoid having to pick one single favorite among the standouts. Yes, I am open to follow up questions, and let the record show that "favorite shows I've seen" and "favorite shows" aren't necessarily the same, though that venn diagram is pretty close to a circle.

Under a cut because the list is LONG and DETAILED.

Sweeney Todd – 8 April 2018 This was a local production, with Tally Sessions and Chris McCarrell from New York to play leading roles, and this theatre just always does really really great work. My dad and I made a whole little day of it, and they did a Q&A after, and it was SO GOOD (you’ll see this same theatre come up again later).

If/Then – 29 April 2018 Another local production, but not where I live. I drove up to see it with one of my friends. Black box theater (where the stage and the audience are level, so everything is super close up and intimate) is my favorite kind of theatre, and it was INCREDIBLE to sit front row, half a foot away from the action It’s been like four years and I still haven’t stopped thinking about how much I loved the set too.

Newsies– 8 July 2018, 19 July 2018 Listen, I just really like local theatre, OK?! My area did two productions of Newsies the same summer, but this one was technically first. All local talent, and SO MUCH OF IT. The guy who played Jack Kelly honestly had NO RIGHT to go as hard as he did. I remember genuinely wondering if he was going to take down part of the scaffolding with how hard he was rattling it during Santa Fe. So good I had to go back and see it a second time.

Last Days of Summer – 14 September 2018 Remember that local theatre from Sweeney Todd? WELL THEY DID IT AGAIN. A world premiere baseball/WWII musical, starring Corey Cott (one of my personal favorite people). The show was FANTASTIC, and they let the audience stay for the cast party, so I actually got to meet/hug him. Also, I was freshly 21, so this was the first time I drank, accidentally. That’s a helluva story, but off topic for this post.

Dear Evan Hansen – 25 September 2018 Opening night of the first national tour stop in Denver. Need I say more? OK, I can say more. Uhhhh … check the tag ‘Katie and Rach: Destination Denver’ for the video I made about the roadtrip to see this show, and the highlights post from the show itself (from back in the days when Rachel and I liveblogged our friendship like hooligans).

The Play That Goes Wrong – 7 April 2019 I mean, you know how I feel about the entire Goes Wrong franchise, and this was what started it all. I saw it on a bad day, but then sat there and laughed for two and a half hours. It was SO fantastic, and I’ve been chasing it down again ever since. This summer, maybe …

Who’s Your Baghdaddy – 27 September 2019 I saw this one on a last-minute whim with my mom – of all people – because it was the end of September and the show I had tickets for got postponed (yeah, yeah, we’re all very proud of JerJor for being in Supergirl again, but the timing could have been better). It was the only thing I could find on my day off work, so we bought a couple of tickets as I swore up and down that I had no idea what the show was about, so if it was horribly offensive, it wasn’t my fault. And then instead it was hilarious and awesome and absurd in the best way.

Bandstand – 19 December 2019 A post-WWII musical about a group of vets starting a band to win a competition. The tour cast was INCREDIBLE, and the show never doesn’t give me chills and sobs. Bonus funny story: the community college that hosted the tour stop did a Q&A about the show and the history surrounding it before curtain call, and the professor running that totally spoiled the whole ending. At least I already knew how it went?

An Evening With Jeremy Jordan – 26 August 2021 OK, this is the one that was supposed to be September 2019. Three more delays (JerJor was in Little Shop of Horrors, COVID, COVID) and two venue changes (same local theatre, but it turns out they have more stages than I thought, and we ended up in a tiny event space upstairs from the upstairs. On the list for favorite venue, in terms of being beautiful and intimate and just perfect for the show they put on) later, it was my first indoor show post-pandemic, and it BLEW ME AWAY. Laughed, cried, lived, loved, all of it. A perfect, triumphant return.

Pretty Woman – 10 March 2022 Duh.

Now that the twins have seen Tookit's fabulous collection of treasures they could spend hours pouring over, they get their belongings back without a fuss. Because now Tookit has what he really wants: their interest.

And now he can entice them even further by showing off the other kids their age with similar skill sets they could make friends with if they stick around him, and he gets to position himself as such a generous person that he takes care of orphans.

I'm gonna be real with you for a second. This episode is quite well written, but it's really hard to watch because I just want to reach into the screen and throttle Tookit for manipulations that are obvious to an adult watching from outside with all the information and none of the stress that would come with actually being there in that situation.

As clever as Kit and Kat are, they are still kids up against a master con artist, and fantastical trappings aside, Tookit's personality and manipulative tactics feel quite real.

But, getting back on topic, one thing Tookit doesn't know is that the twins aren't "without anywhere to go". They're Thundercats. They have a found family they travel with, who will be back for them eventually. So even if he gets his hooks into them, they wouldn't have nowhere else to turn.

Gunnerkrigg Liveblog #6: Zimmy's Story

Here's to hoping I can post more often.

We are on the 11th chapter aka "Dobnaroc, Gamma" (11.181). We start off with Annie and two other girls (11.182):

WAIT, WAIT! Oh, this webcomic is really testing my memory, but I know these two! Their names are... uhhhh... [*checks one of my old posts*]... OK, the one on the left is Zimmy, and the one on the right is Gamma! Did I pass the exam?

But either way, Zimmy is for some reason angry at one of those weird green birds (11.183).

Fast-forward around 9 hours later (11.184), when Kat and Annie bump into Zimmy and Gamma in the library. The latter two ask for Annie's help (11.185). Then, um (11.186)...

Okay, obviously something non-right is happening with the hours and minutes here.

Then, in 8 hours (11.187) (I don't know if that's 8 hours later or if it's 8:10 AM or PM or whatever), Zimmy explains that Gamma doesn't get any sleep because she tries to stay awake with her, but unfortunately Zimmy doesn't sleep, like, ever. Zimmy explains (11.189) that being around Gamma helps to get the "static" out of her head, as some unusual "stuff" happens within Zimmy's proximity.

I should note that, in-between all of this, we've been getting what I assume are flashbacks of Zimmy and Gamma's past. But suddenly we see that present!Zimmy is phasing into her flashback phase again (11.192) as "the storm" is coming.

I am only now (11.193) realizing that the hours and minutes is (most likely) a clock counting down to Zimmy's episodes. Okay, makes sense.

In that case, we are now (11.194) in the scene where the chapter started, as Zimmy throws her stick (11.183). Ah, so they were doing an in media res thing. But at least now, we have an explanation as to why Zimmy hates those green birds: it's a "thousand eyes" and it can see her.

But eventually, it starts to rain, and Zimmy seems to be having fun for the first time (11.196). Not only that, we actually see her true eyes for once:

Okay, still kinda creepy, but less so. And here I was thinking Zimmy just didn't have eyeballs.

Gamma and Annie are glad to see Zimmy happy (11.197), and minus the bonus strips at the end of each chapter, our story ends there! As I said before, here's to hoping I can post more frequently. It seems like we're getting to the part of the story where they actually explain things instead of complicate them, which is nice to see.

It's my birthday so we are jumping straight into this. As always there will be spoilers below.

I can't im laughing this is hilarious but I also have lied too. Also the fact that Jules could tell she was lying because Rue has actually came before.

Jules is cutting again, oh no. Yea honey I'm going to need you to distance yourself from both of them. No matter how much I love Rules she hurt herself because she thinks that Rue's relapse is entirely her fault. Probably like when she was a kid and thought the same about her mom I'm guessing. She doesn't know that its not and Elliot is probably not going to tell her what Rue. He is manipulating her and she doesn't even know. I just want to hug Jules like

Sigh, wait is Jules about to become the narrator. These two really do love one another but they both need help and not eachother right now.

Also noted Rue didn't narrarate this episode mostly at all. Her voice is gone.

See yall they know what they are doing. This show is visually stunning.

Me and my friends (we do talk backs after the ep) believe that Elliot is sus btw. He gave Rue alcohol and then pointed it out to act like "omg why are you drinking Rue???" Just so her girlfriend would know because you knew Jules would be angry and leave her alone. He's up to no good and knows she wants Rue. We could have had polyamory or a good healthy friendship, but nope non of that. My friend said its a manipulator coming in between a vulnerable drug addict and their partner and how addicts are vulnerable to other people who are ready to manipulate and hurt you for their own.

Edit; I am upset at Jules for her choices in thus situation with Elliot and for just letting Rue leave like that on the highway. Even though I can empathize with both because she's 17 she's a kid as they all are and humans no matter what age make mistakes. I know the whole DND mode move and sneaking around is fucked up from doing that (not cheating really but other stuff). So that game she's playing there is a slippery ass slope and not a good look on her part. Wish Hunter and Zendaya could have just written and stared in a queer perfect love story with its issues but close to perfect though.

Episode 5 preview thoughts:

Elliot wanted a high friend because then her finally had someone he could relate to. Laurie is telling Rue the truth (we know she goes to her). But, everyone is about to go through it. I'm scared like really scared for all my girls. Hoping the best comes for Rue and all the girls. Wishing Ethan the best as well and hope he really smashes his role in Lexi's play about her life.

honestly? no one will ever know what adena kissing kat in a hijab means to me or how much happiness & confidence it has brought me-not just because she’s a muslim lesbian, but especially because she was wearing the hijab as she showed that kind of intimacy.

as a muslim bisexual women (who has only been with women so far), it always felt like a strange “out of body” experience to kiss or show affection towards any girl i liked or was with while wearing my hijab. now, i feel like i actually fucking exist outside of my own head (if that makes sense). not to mention that adena is presented as feminine, chic, pretty, and attractive in her own right & in a conventional manner-regardless of her faith & how she chooses to practice it.

Valentine's Day at the Roadhouse - A Recap

Actors Chad Linberg (Ash) and Samantha Ferris (Ellen) made tweets to role play a Valentine’s Day celebration at the Roadhouse. Several of their comments seemed to be suggesting that they would celebrate the wedding of Dean and Cas, and fans took this idea and ran with it. On the fourteenth, fans held their own celebration across social media platforms by joyfully sharing writing, art, headcanons, and memes, getting #DeanCasWedding trending in the process. Ferris and Lindburg did not roleplay a wedding, and both actors became defensive when the subject was brought up, stating that holding a gay wedding would fail to “uphold the integrity & spirit of the show” and that they had never suggested anything else. Fans were hurt and frustrated by these responses, as well as Lindburg’s liking of a post that claimed Destiel supporters have been “gaslighting the rest of the fandom for 10+ years.” Other people associated with the Supernatural community including actor Kat Ramdeen, writer Eric Charmelo, and the official account for Stands merchandising, responded to fans in a more positive way.

Last week, actors Chad Linberg (Ash) and Samantha Ferris (Ellen) announced their decision to roleplay a Valentine’s day celebration at the Roadhouse. Lindburg and Ferris had already successfully liveblogged a birthday party for Dean Winchester on January 24 and the reopening of the Roadhouse bar on February 10 (Kat Ramdeen also rp-d this event.) Both Ferris and Lindburg mentioned “wedding season” in their posts, which piqued fan interest, and fans latched on to the idea that they might be planning a Deancas wedding. This theory was further supported by Lindburg’s own interactions with fans: [this one might be too confusing: at one point, he failed to like--or possibly liked and then quickly unliked, a tweet that read “don't like this reply if a deancas wedding is gonna happen at the roadhouse” (2). He directed fans with ‘questions’ to an account who was a public destiel shipper (3) He also responded to a tweet reading “people think you guys are celebrating a Destiel wedding, that isn’t the case of course.” with “Um no sorry...you did NOT get the memo” (4)

On February 14 #DeanCasWedding trended on twitter as fans across the world staged their own, fan-created celebration by joyfully sharing writing, art, headcanons, and memes. Ferris and Lindburg wrote innocuous Roadhouse update tweets all day long, including a sequence where Lindburg got in a fight with Elvis, and concluding with the partial destruction of the Roadhouse by unknown forces. No mention was made of the wedding by either actor.

However, partway through Monday February 15, Ferris and Lindburg began addressing questions as to why they had hinted they would hold a wedding and then not followed through.

Chad Lindburg responded that he never intended to imply that he would hold a Deancas wedding, and issued this statement.

“Yes, among other things, the Roadhouse does “weddings.” I had NO idea this would be taken out of context..If you thought you were sold something else, you weren't...this was a way to bring people together and have fun. State your views, however, I’ll be blocking any rude or nastiness today.”(5)

Lindburg did go on to block multiple twitter users who tried to engage with him on this topic. Over the next few days, Lindburg’s tweets ranged from attempts to validate fan’s feelings, such as “No one is delusional. You're all validated. Remember, we're all just having fun with our imaginations. And actually, the Fandom has just as much weight as the actors. It goes both ways. We can't have one without the other. We're grateful for all of you.” (6) to hostile, such as replying “Thank you [hands clasped emoji]” to a tweet that read “Ironically the ones complaining about being gaslit by you are the ones that have been gaslighting the rest of the fandom for 10+ years.” (7)

Samantha Ferris responded that they would never hold a DeanCas wedding because Supernatural is “a story about family, bonds, and supernatural power struggles. The direction has never included sexuality or romance” and that she believed that her and Lindburg’s “role is to uphold the integrity & spirit of the show” and that “it would be disrespectful to all the people who tried to tell this tale if we validated it [the Deancas relationship]” (8) Her full tweets on the matter read,

“Ima say this once then move on. @ChadLindberg & I can’t follow you down that road. As part of the storyline, our role is to uphold the integrity & spirit of the show: it’s a story about family, bonds, and supernatural power struggles. The direction never included sexuality or romance. That was never what it was supposed to be about. So to honour the cast, crew, and creators, we respect their intentions. You wanna create your side story? Go for it. But it would be disrespectful to all the people who tried to tell this tale if we validated it…”

Ferris and Lindburg have continued to roleplay their Roadhouse updates, although they have both lost followers in fan interest after the events of this week.

Other people associated with the spn community responded more positively: Writer Eric Charmelo responded to the wedding posting by liking #DeancasWedding fanart (9). Actor Kat Ramdeen (Alex) tweeted on Valentine’s day

“I love you #SPNFamily I see you”

accompanied by a rainbow heart and a Social justice Pride Flag made up of hearts (10). Stands, a company that sells fandom merchandise made in collaboration with the actors and gives a portion of proceeds to charity, sent out these two supportive tweets in response to the drama in the Supernatural community

“I’ve just caught up and I’m sorry y’all are having a rough go. I love you. <3” (11)

and

“It’s so rare I’m actually mad but to be clear- absolutely no one gets to define how you experience something you love. Just go on with your bad selves and enjoy the things that make you happy. As if the last two years haven’t been shit enough. Seize your moments, ignore the rest” (12)

Game Night! [Liveblog #4]

I’m gonna try to finish up the last game and the end of the video in this post, so we better get right to it!

The last game they’re going to play is called Quiplash. Okay, they’re going to be given a prompt... and whoever finishes the quip in the funniest way wins. Kat warns that she’s a master at this and that everybody’s going down. Colin seems impressed by her bravado, but incensed to win nonetheless. “Here we go,” says Sam unenthusiastically 😂

AND THE GAME IS ON!!!

...or it’s meant to be on. Sam’s not joined the game yet. Seems to be having some sort of technical difficulty. “You scared of losing, Sam?” Colin asks helpfully. “All the rest of us got in pretty easy...”

Sam has joined. His name is now Colonislosin 😂 It’s hard to see exactly how it’s spelled. I don’t think any of them can see it that clearly, either. Sam has to tell them what it says.

“We’ll see,” Colin says. “We’ll see.”

The game begins. “It’s more like Col-on is losin,” Sam says. “Col-on.”

The audio is breaking all up in this segment, and Josh even comments on “Low internet signal. We’re doing great.” Hmm. I paid $10 for this, you damn well better find a stronger internet signal.

ROUND 1! The first quip is: We can all agree that... The two answers are: “Covid sucks” and “Josh... is... hairy” “Covid sucks” wins ~ and Colin gets all the points.

The second quip is: A terrible name for a funeral parlor. The two answers are: “Happy Times Palace” and “We put the Fun in Funeral” “We put the Fun in Funeral” wins ~ and Kat gets all the points.

The third quip is: “Knock Knock” “Who’s There?” The two answers are: “Me DUH” and “Get the fuck away from my door” “Get the fuck away” wins and Josh gets most of the points. Colin gets some too, I think, for his answer, because Sam voted for it.

The fourth quip is: “Something that would make a creepy replacement for the horses on a merry-go-round.” The two answers are: “Mini Josh’s” and “Creepy Princes” AREN’T THOSE THE SAME THING?! 😂 “One and the same,” says Sammy. “You don’t want to sit on a mini Josh, do you?” Sam ponders. Josh forgets to even vote, and Sam gets points for “Mini Josh’s”

At the end of Round 1, Sam is in the lead, with Kat and Colin tied for second.

I wanna take this moment to apologize for how BORING this post is so far. During the games, all five people (the three stars, Josh, and Sammy the producer) are in these miniscule windows on the far right of the screen. You can barely even see them. And during this game, there’s little to no conversation going on between/during the quips. As much fun as this game might be to play, it’s not a lot of fun to watch. The last one was better, but even that tended to DRAG for the audience at home. Josh really needs to work on the games he’s having stars play if he plans to keep charging $10 a month to watch this stuff. Also, the audio keeps breaking up in this segment, so even when they talk, some of it’s hard to decipher.

“I respect that Colin is doing this instead of reading bedtime stories to his children tonight,” Josh says as everyone’s entering in their answers for Round 2. “[That’s] how committed I am,” Colin replies. Kat says something that is so broken up, I can’t even begin to figure out what it is. Something about bedtime stories and Colin’s kids. It’s probably funny. 🤷‍♀️ I’m getting mad about my $10 gift card being gone again.

Alright. Round 2.

Quip #1: It never ends well when you mix ___ and ___. Answers: “poo and oatmeal” and “Sam and Josh” Okay, that second one is gold. Who did that? Apparently Colin did “poo and oatmeal” and Kat did “Sam and Josh”. Bless her. Colin gets the points with more votes, though.

Quip #2: The worst car feature that ends with “holder” Answers: “penis” and “diaper” Sam is just blinking rapidly. Now he’s laughing. “How does that work?” he asks. No one answers. “But I wanna know,” he says. “How does it work?” Josh wins the points with his “penis” answer - which Colin voted for, by the way - but no one cares now. “Does it move?” Kat asks. “Or does it just-” “Don’t ask too many questions,” Josh says. “What kind of size is it?” Sam asks. “Is it stationary or is there a motor feature?” Kat asks. “Maybe it’s a good idea...” Sam concludes, as Josh laments the kind of dreams he’s going to have now.

The third quip is literally happening in the background now, as everyone talks about the penis holder. Colin is noticeably silent on the topic XD

Quip #3: Something upsetting you could say to the cable guy as he installs your television service. Answers: “you smell like fart” and “want to see my murder room?” I’m sitting here going, “don’t be Colin, don’t be Colin” while simultaneously knowing 100% that Colin absolutely typed “you smell like fart” into his phone and... Yeah. Yeah, I’m right. That was him 😂 And he got 0 points. “Oh, boooo,” says Colin. Honey... Honey, I’m sorry, but that was bad.

Quip #4: The name of the reindeer Santa did not pick to pull his sleigh. Answers: “ohdeer” and “tipsy” Neither of these are very good. I hate this game. Kat gets the points with “tipsy”.

OH WOW, YOU GUYS. The final points are tallied and...

WHAT IS THIS TOMFOOLERY?! Colin is LOSING?!?! I mean, I know “you smell like fart” was bad, but this is unbelievable! I call shenanigans!!!

Colin is literally sitting forward in his chair now, lmao. The determination is intense, you guys. I once again cannot handle him right now. I wish he wasn’t in the teeny tiny window so I could show you guys better, but look at him getting his fucking game face on:

This man is a peanut and I love him with every fiber of my being. Look at him being a competitive little somesuch in last place. I can’t, you guys. Bury me here, etc, etc, I’m just a goner for this ridiculous man.

O’DONOINTENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last Round: Quip: Strange side effect to hear during a drug commercial. Answers: “cream cheese will come out of your butt” “seeing double horowitz” and “the screams of baboons” - there’s only three because Kat didn’t get her answer in before the time was up. Aaaaaaand the sound’s breaking all up again 😣 Josh is wondering what the point is of voting, if all you’re doing is giving points to your competitors. “Do you have to give all three votes?” Colin asks. “See,” Josh says. “Colin is thinking strategically, like me.” “Well, I’m not entirely sure the other two, I think, deserve any more than one point.” But it’s... it’s the WAY he says it, OH MY GOD, lol. Lemme... I gotta... Okay, I screen recorded it for you guys.

That O’Donosass is actually almost worth $10, you guys.

Which is good, because the audio is getting worse and worse on this and it’s starting to piss me off. Anyway! Everybody’s got a lot of points, because those were ALL good answers (Colin’s was “the screams of baboons” which I quite like). Let’s see the final tally...

Josh is the winner! But Colin managed a come-from-behind close second, so I’m really proud of him :D Sam mentions how Josh invited them all there to play games and then BEAT them. Josh is closing out the show, saying he hopes everyone enjoyed it... “I enjoyed it,” Josh says "But maybe that’s just 'cause I won at the very last second.” “No, well, you won ONE,” Colin cuts in. “You won ONE game.”

SERIOUSLY. BURY ME RIGHT THERE 😂😂😂

“Colin won the first round,” Josh says.

“...and then we have these two other people.”

Incidentally, I wish everyone’s webcams were as clear as Kat’s.

Anyway, now there’s some sweet summing up... and Josh hawking everyone’s current projects... (gee, it’s like this is promotional content or something) and the show closing down and-

“Can I win next time?” asks Sam Heughan.

I hope you guys had fun reading this. I gotta say... this one video isn’t worth $10. I can see if you’re a huge fan of Josh’s or really into celebrity culture, $10 a month might be a fine price to pay for a bunch of this kind of content... but for a one-time video when your fave happens to show up on his channel? Nah. He really should have a “one time access” fee available for individual videos that’s a LOT less. Like, I’m talking, like... $1 or 2. This is literally a zoom call... and as such, the quality’s only as good as his guests’ webcams and audio and everyone’s internet connections. Also, I found the game format enticing... but ultimately boring due to the games chosen. The Would You Rather was the most fun of the three, because we actually got to hear from the stars and get some banter going. The games relied too much on the stars interacting with their devices instead of each other or anyone really engaging the audience. Honestly, if it was any of my faves other than Colin in this video, I might not have even watched the whole thing. Colin’s adorable competitive streak and eagerness to win play games is what kept me watching. The idea is cute, but it needs some work. And the price is too high - especially with the audio issues in the last ten minutes or so. That’s my final verdict.

Thoughts on the new update, or, “everything comes down to Dave/kat”

I already posted/liveblogged my thoughts on Twitter but I wanted to focus on a more specific aspect of the update. Now, in spite of my snarking and bitching, I don’t think this is a bad update. I’m actually glad to see John and Karkat talk again. But my main issue comes with how it ends.

So, to recap. Karkat comes by John’s burning house to... console him and talk. Eventually John brings up Dave and how he’s gone. Presumably John was told this offscreen, which will be important later. Anyway, he starts pestering Karkat about Dave b/c obvious, prompting Karkat to go on a rant about how he’s TOTALLY over Dave and now he has more important things to worry about. John eventually breaks down and breaks the news that Dave is dead and they don’t know what happened to him. Prompting this.

Now, this isn’t a bad moment in a vacuum. I would even call it a good Dave/kat moment. But here are my issues

John was given the news of Dave’s death offscreen

This is the first time we see John react to that news. Keep in mind, before his house burned down, he was excitedly explaining to Harry his plan with not an once of angst in sight.

Presumably, Rose (Dave’s sister) and or Jade (Dave’s fucking wife) were the ones to break the news to him. We do not know their reactions or thoughts either.

However, this update reveals that John and co believe Dave is dead, and out of everyone, the writers decided that Karkat’s reaction was more important than Rose or Jade.

And the last point is what really breaks this update for me. Because okay, maybe the writers just don’t want to recap or something, but could we at least see a HINT of a reaction out of Rose or Jade? I get that a lot of shit is happening right now, but fuck, the Rose still took the time to mourn over her mom’s death and Jade STILL took the time to comfort her. Why was Rose/Jade telling John the news of Dave’s death not important? Why couldn’t we have had a moment, say, during ‘How are your feelings’ where we cut to Rose, Jade, and John taking a moment to mourn over Dave’s death? Why was that moment considered less important than KARKAT’S reaction?

And behold, that’s my distilled issues with Dave/kat in Homestuck 2. It’s not Dave/kat existing that’s the problem, it’s Dave/Kat being given higher priority over Dave’s other relationships.

#thoughts #sfw #also I don’t know where to fit this #but this moment also does not work as a gut punch #because the audience knows Dave isn’t dead #and even ignoring that #it still doesn’t work because we don’t see John and co reacting to Dave’s death first #maybe I’m just tropey but revealing a character has died to their former lover would have more impact if:#1. the audience didn’t know beforehand #2. other characters found out first and now they have to have the awkward/upsetting task of breaking the news first #post canon bullshit #Homestuck 2 #homestuck^2 #HS2 #hs^2
