I should probably also start playing more RPGmaker games for homework.  I'm sure there'll be plenty of things I want to jot down, like "how did they do that & how can I do something similar?"  I'm already aware of a few games that really made me go "wait, RPGmaker can do that?", so, should be exciting?
Owned:
The Amber Throne (Tbh, I did play a chunk of this one & got softlocked?  Worth a revisit though, very impressive presentation despite its flaws.)
Ara Fell (Actually played through this one in its entirety, so probably just a quick revisit to remind myself what all it could do)
Arelite Core
Asdivine Hearts
Aveyond 3-1/3-2
Benjamin of Blackstone Edge
Brave Hero Yuusha EX
Corinne Cross's Dead & Breakfast
Danger Zone Friends
Deadly Sin 2
Disc Creatures
Echoes of Aetheria
Finding Light
Hello Charlotte EP2: Requiem Aeternam Deo
Hylics
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass
LiEat
Moonstone Deep
Mutiny Island
Nepenthe
Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Chapter II: "Broken Wings"
No Delivery
OneShot
Path Out
Rakuen
The Sacred Tears TRUE
Skyborn
Soma Spirits: Rebalance
Sweet Lily Dreams
To the Moon
Wishlisted:
8-Bit Adventures
The Great Gaias
Holidays
Omori
Pegasus-5: Gone Astray
Stray Cat Crossing
Toymaker
Unraveled: Tale of the Shipbreaker's Daughter
Vestaria Saga I  (wait, really??  This was RPGmaker?  Dang EDIT: i am getting mixed answers as to whether or not that steam store tag is accurate, so idk)
The World is Your Weapon
I realize there are plenty of free ones out there as well, but my inclination is to play what I paid for first.
Also WOW.  Itch.io desperately needs a sort-by-tag thing for your library.  I am very much questioning the amount of time I spent figuring out what all in my sizable purchases section was RPGmaker-related. 🙃

Games in November (2020)
Tumblr media
I kinda just played whatever this month
Tumblr media
Tearaway Unfolded System: PS4 Genre: Platformer
I have very mixed feelings on this game. It’s no different from any Media Molecule game (oozes charm but doesn’t exactly play the best)... except for the part where there’s no true player creation element. I didn’t realize how crucial player creation is in Mm games until this game, but I have and I feel the game is lesser for that reason.
And it’s kind of a shame. Tearaway is beautiful, charming and lowkey relaxing, but as a game, I’m not sure I actually like it. There are flashes of brilliance (I like how there’s a reliance on crowd controlling enemies instead of just jumping or hitting them and being done with it) but it’s dragged down by the pacing and the honestly gimmicky use of DS4 features.
I’ve read that the Vita version of this game has far better pacing (because the PS4 actually added in content) and honestly? Now I kinda want a Vita. I really want to love this game but the version I’ve played is just not that compelling.
Tumblr media
Epic War 4 System: PC (Flash) Genre: Strategy
With the Flashpocalypse among us, I thought I’d go back to an old classic. This game is a lot easier than I remember (timestop is a really, really, REALLY OP spell) but I still had a good 6 hours just steamrolling enemy armies. Between this and my brief stint with Metal Slug Attack earlier this year makes it apparent that my favorite micro-genre of game has to be “big bombastic, 2d strategy games”
Tumblr media
What Did I Do To Deserve This, My Lord? System: PSP Genre: Dungeon Sim
So this month I got to borrow a PSP. And I got to try out a bunch of games. This was a game I always had my eye on (on account of being a Sony-owned series) and all I can say is I AM SO GLAD THIS ISN’T ON CONSOLE because I got super addicted to this. Normally this isn’t a bad thing but I am so trash at this game I was spending hours doing the same part over and over. Literally pulled an all nighter at one point because I was that hooked.
Tumblr media
Mad Rat Dead (Demo) System: PS4 Genre: Rhythm game / Platformer
This is the platformer equivalent of Crypt of the Necrodancer (Necrodancer being another game I played this month, though I didn’t complete it yet, hence it’s absence on this list). If you’re not familiar with MRD or Necrodancer, basically they’re hybrids that follow rhythm game rules, with the main conceit being that you’ve got to follow each level’s BPM / tempo to act.
Mad Rat Dead seemed fine for the most part. All the non-game elements are pretty impressive. The story seems trippy and crazy yet surprisingly sentimental, while the music and aesthetics are just so STRONG. The only thing I’m not really sold on is the gameplay. The game seems to be either very easy (boring) or very hard (frustrating). The final demo level in particular is very trial and error heavy affair. With all that said... I still want this anyway. If nothing else, I want to experience the story and music even if the game seems like it’d be frustrating.
Tumblr media
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory (Demo) System: PS4 Genre: Rhythm game
I gave this a whirl and I didn’t like it at all. Long story short, I don’t like how it plays. The control scheme is incredibly unintuitive, the sound effects lack any punch and the selection of music (in the demo) was just the worst.
The Kingdom Hearts fatigue I’ve been feeling for a while probably doesn’t help.
Tumblr media
Dragon Quest Heroes 2 System: PS4 Genre: Action RPG (It’s not a Musou game, dammit!)
Went back to this game because I really wanted to try a NG+ speedrun. This mostly involved me doing so, so much grinding. The practice speedrun is here and even though it was just a practice run, it was honestly pretty boring to do. Like I thought there’d be more variety but when it comes down to it, Terry going ham with Mercurial Slash / Double Edged Slash seems as optimal as it gets.
I can probably make this more efficient (i.e. maybe by using two Priests with M-Pathy to MP share, having some actual accessories on all the characters etc.) but for all the grinding I did, I was horribly disappointed by how easy this was.
Tumblr media
Gitaroo Man Lives! System: PSP Genre: Rhythm Game
I had to drop this game because it was kicking my ass too hard. While I adore this game’s aesthetics and music, the later stages of this game take as much effort as playing an actual instrument and it just didn’t feel worth it after a point. Born To Be Bone and the Legendary Theme are still bangers though.
Tumblr media
Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle (Chapter I and II) System: PC (itch.io) Genre: Ace Attorney-style Visual Novel
It’s Ace Attorney but anime (like, really, really anime). I’m not usually into RPG Maker games but after noticing that I got episode 2 from the BLM bundle earlier this year, I had to play episode 1 as well. This was back in August but at least I’ve actually played them now.
Erm, there’s not much else to say. Ace Attorney but more Anime really does describe the game. There’s not much to say without spoiling the cases (which I’m not going to do). I guess both released cases are quite easy, but the early cases in Ace Attorney typically are. If you got the BLM bundle, and ya like Ace Attorney I’d say try this out. Start with one since Chapter 1 is a 1/2 hour tutorial while Chapter 2 is a longer, 4 hour case.

Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Season One gets a big discount
Tumblr media
Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Season One visual novel game is now on Sale for Linux and Windows PC. Thanks to the ongoing support of developer Tanuki-sama Studios. Which you can find now on Steam. Which also boasts Steam Deck support. Recent events have prompted UK-based Tanuki-sama Studios to host an unusual sale on Steam. While calling it, "the UK and the value of the £ is crashing". As a result, the developers are putting Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle on sale. So of course, they want to spread this news more widely. Just in case other UK-based developers are unaware Since raising funds in the indie space is always difficult. As well as offering any possible boost for indie studios’ revenue at this difficult time. This would no doubt be welcome. TSS is reducing the price of Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Season One by 50% for one week. Starting now, October 3rd. Ethan Fox, owner of the studio, has this to say:
We’re dismayed at the recent catastrophic events in British government that have led to the pound, at the time of writing, being worth approaching 1:1 with the US Dollar; the lowest since the 80s and potentially soon the lowest on record.
However, as Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Season One grow, Steam pays their developers in dollars. So this means that $100 USD in summer 2021 was worth £72. Now that same $100 USD is worth £93.
Teaser Trailer | "Sacred Feathers" | Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Chapter IV
youtube
Earnings from our first Steam release, Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Season One directly help with the budget for future development. Meaning that right now, every sale of the game, temporarily, gives an extra boost. So Tanuki-sama thought a sale at this critical time would be a great way to get the word out. Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Season One is part a series of anime-themed courtroom adventures. One in which players step into court in a world where all anime genres exist at once. The game is available for Linux, Steak Deck, and Windows PC. Tthese latter versions being native Linux builds of the game. Tanuki-sama Studios is presently working on the sequel, Chapter IV: “Sacred Feathers”. More info about this new, upcoming game is provided below. Tanuki-sama Studios is reducing the price of Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Season One by 50% for one week. Starting now, you can save big on Steam.
