Why do humans create art? It's probably impossible to point out a single reason, as there's multiple purposes for which the plethora of mediums that compose what we call art are used, but at it's core it's safe to say there's a core component: human expression. And tied to human expression also lies human connection.

Directed by Satoshi Kon and loosely inspired by the story of real actress Setsuko Hara (who retired from acting after a prolific career when she was still 43 years old and disappeared from public life until her death at 95, never having married), the film is about retired actress Chiyoko Fujiwara. Unlike Hara, she does agree to an interview later in her life to a director she knew at some point called Genya Tachibana, as both discuss her own prolific career.

What follows is one of the most striking films about… well, film. We see the life of a woman explored through her acting roles and what they meant to her, mixing the reality of that universe with the films within, which not only covers all sorts of genres including everything from jidaigeki to science fiction (hence spawning a millenium), but also simply allow the narrative to be guided by the motions of those films mirroring the actual events of Chiyoko's life, including an impossible love that pushed her to keep acting in the first place.

Not only is this one a fascinating piece because of it's intertwining of the real and the fictional, but simply because of what the fictional tries to communicate and hide in the first place. It shows an incredible passion for the medium, but more significantly, it is used to express the yearnings and those things left unsaid by the people involved. Visually explosive, it's as poetic as it is heartbreaking in the best way possible, powerfully conveying an entire life journey through the lens of artistic expression.

One day I was redraw this Spike and the idea came into my head to draw Corazon someday in the style of the final scene of Cowboy Bebop, and all thanks to the wonderful voice of seiyuu Kōichi Yamadera.

But so far I haven’t found the strength in myself to do this. Need to practice more :(

Warner Bros. Japan has announced that it is producing a sequel film to its Batman Ninja CG anime film titled Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League.

Junpei Mizusaki, the producer of the opening animation sequences for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders and Kamikaze Douga CEO/founder, is returning from Batman Ninja to direct the film alongside Shinji Takagi (unit director for Blood: The Last Vampire). Kamikaze Douga is again animating the film. Returning staff members also include scriptwriter Kazuki Nakashima, character designer Takashi Okazaki, and composer Yūgo Kanno.

Kōichi Yamadera returns to voice Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Warner Bros. Japan will host the "Warner Bros. Japan presents Suicide Squad ISEKAI and Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League" panel at Anime Expo on July 4, 2024. The panel will reveal more details for the film.

Shun Akiyama (秋山 駿, Akiyama Shun)

The Lifeline of Kamurocho and our favorite slacker.

秋 aki = autumn

山 yama = mountain

駿 shun = a good horse, speed, a fast person

- About his family name: Autumn in Japan is the season of harvest and abundance of the blessings of nature. Akiyama uses his vast amounts of money to help the desperate people that come to him as a last resort. He loans his clients money free of interest and collateral in exchange for passing one of his tests. He is a former homeless man who benefitted from the “blessing” of the rain of money in the Y1 finale and now uses the fortune he amassed to give others the chance to change their lives. Akiyama is very generous, but he is still a loan shark who will eventually collect (harvest) the money he loaned to his clients.

In autumn, mountains are very popular spots for Momijigari (”autumn-leaf hunting”), a tradition where people go to see the red maple leaves and yellow ginkgo leaves that now decorate Japanese landscapes. It is similar to Hanami, the “flower viewing” tradition in spring, famous for the cherry blossoms viewing.

- About his given name: An obvious reference to his lightning-fast fighting style of swift kicks. His battle theme in Y4 is even named “Speed Star.“

After her hatchlings have grown old enough to fend for themselves, we encounter her in the jungles of Paradise Falls. We save her from some of the bad guys who are hunting her, but when we end up in a tough situation ourselves, she comes to the rescue out of gratitude, joining us on the adventure. Representing Innocence, Kevin’s artifact is a magically enhanced speech collar, though she “speaks” in broken English. She has a real name other than “Kevin”, but keeps it a secret.

Somewhere in the Seven Deserts, we meet Cassim and Iago who are fighting off some bad guys, and join in the battle. Afterwards, once the keyblade reveals Iago to hold Loyalty, we try to get him to join us, but he refuses. He flees when the bad guys come looking for revenge, only to have an attack of conscience, allowing him to return to save the day. Cassim then allows him to accompany us until the Kingdom of Dreams is safe. His artifact is a magic ring which allows him to cast spells.

Once we’ve saved both the Kingdom of Dreams and my world, we all go back to our respective homeworlds/time periods, though we magically keep in touch.

Almost from the beginning, motion pictures, with their ability to move rapidly through time and space and their frequent embrace of the irrational, have been associated with dreams. The development of animated movies only heightened the identification, and makers of animated films have always been ready to embrace the dreamlike. Satoshi Kon's extraordinary anime Paprika is not only dreamlike, it's also about the dream state and its psychological potential. The word "psychology" etymologically means "the study of the soul," and nothing gets closer to the soul -- whatever that is -- than dreams, unfettered by reason and mundane actuality. So Kon's film is about an invasion of the dream state, predicated on the idea that technology might eventually allow one to enter other people's dreams -- an invasion of the soul. Kon finds the dreamlike not only in movies or television, but also in other manifestations of the imagination like circuses and parades and toys, and ultimately in the internet, which Paprika herself identifies as one of the "areas where the repressed conscious mind escapes." Paprika is an avatar in the dream world of Atsuko Chiba, a psychiatrist who is using the newly developed DC Mini, technology that allows her, as Paprika, to enter the dreams of her patients. But when one of the developers of the DC Mini begins using it for his own nefarious purposes, the boundary between dreams and waking life is breached, with phantasmagorical consequences. Dr. Chiba and Paprika have to find a way to repair the breach. Any summary of the film is inadequate because there's something recursive about Paprika, a dreamlike movie about movies (and other things) as dreams.

I started, of course, with Kōichi Yamadera. It didn’t turn out as good as I expected, so I only drew a few collages and gave up. I lack perseverance and work on myself(
