Weekly Update
Hi! Sorry! I just got caught up in holidays and travel and stuff and I am back now!
I have spent a lot of today cleaning and I should do more (including LEAVE MY APARTMENT to take out the trash, a thing I do not wish to do but I guess some fresh air will be good for me). I have done...close to no writing for awhile, but I think it is just my brain resting. Honestly, mostly I just play Stardew Valley, and I’m gonna simply run with that until I feel moved to write again. (I have been mostly working at cracky fics and/or femme A/C, and might actually pick up a canon story to try and break the writer’s block.)
Anyway.
Writing
I finished Homewaters, which is a gorgeous book about the natural and human history of the Puget sound region, and I loved it. It’s not the fastest-paced book going, but it’s a fantastic history and goes into the biodiversity of the area, and I’m so glad I got it.
I also read A Prayer for the Crown-Shy in one sitting on an airplane. I did not glom onto the Monk and Robot books as much as I thought I would, but I liked this a lot, and found it really lovely. I hope very much that there will be others.
Finally, last night I finished reading Shadowlands: A Journey Through Britain's Lost Cities and Vanished Villages. Some chapters are better than others (or maybe I was just more awake?) -- I found the chapters on Skara Brae and St. Kilda genuinely riveting, but still don’t quite remember what happened at Old Winchelsea, for example. The last chapter, on Capel Celyn, was startlingly hard to read; I have mostly left my time in Wales in the past. Not in a bad way, but there’s no point in it being in my daily life, but it was much more painful to read about my once-home than I thought it would be. (It’s also just an absolutely gutting story.)

Nobody could see that Bucky and Deena will start dating really soon. It was big for her since the first time they saw each other. It was like an instant crush, boom and the next few weeks were only Bucky-filled. You were split about all of that - you were happy for your best friend.
She found someone to click with, someone to just be with, somebody great.
But why Steve was not taking his chances when his best friend was ready in one day. One fucking day. You liked that guy, but your patience was starting to get seriously thin.
After the first date, Deena immediately did a FaceTime group. It was consisting of four people - her, May, Suzie and you. Everyone except Deena was in their comfortable home clothes, everyone was looking terrible in the camera, but for Deena's face with a big smile on it. She was giggling loudly. And she didn't even seem to be even drunk.
Jealousy stroke you at that moment. She was on a date with James and she looked as happy as never before. This was an unseen, a completely new thing in Deena's behavior. She was indeed beautiful like that.
"Okay, you happy face. Start talking!" - You cried out with a sultry smile. You and Steve. Could you be like that if he ever asked you out? At that point, it seemed pointless. Steve was basically the slowest relationship maker in history. But even tho your faith slowly started to fade away, you tried to be optimistic about all of that.
"I'm not going to lie to you, this was one of the... Best fucking dates in my whole life." - She yelled all over the street and she didn't give a crap about people turning after her.
"Really? Come on, details!" - May said and turned her face in the direction of the TV, watching the series she used to every Thursday. It was some endless series, some telenovela or what. But she loved when she could only talk about the things that happened in the last episode and you just listened to her.
"First things first, he's incredibly handsome. He's like the vocabulary definition of a hunk, you should see those rippin' back, shoulders... This is the first guy with long hair that I fuckin' adore!" - Deena exclaimed. That was true, she hated guys who had hair under their earlobes. She found that disgusting. And James must've been really sexy if even Deena found him sexy. - "He's sweet, he's funny, he has manners... Girls. He is behaving so calmly, he is so fucking well raised. I want to meet the woman who raised him up, because she's my hero..." - She kept on talking and talking and your mind slowly kept on fading away as you thought about Steve. You would love to be the one calling, the one who would be screaming somewhere on the street. But you weren't.
Slowly, James became a day-to-day part of your office life. He and Deena were saying they're just friends, but everyone thought something different. Deena had the most lustful look ever, every time James came to the office with a couple of bags full of food for every one of you, everyone in the distance of few meters knew she's thinking about fucking the soul out of him. James made her laugh, they slowly grew closer and closer, having their inside jokes and sometimes you caught them staring in the eyes of each other.
Everyone was smiling when James brought her flowers for the first time. It was a big puget of white roses and they were indeed beautiful. Each of you just sat there and looked at her table with a dreamy look. And if that wasn't enough, James got along with everyone as well. He was a nice, funny and he indeed was handsome. Most of them, he got along with Val.
Without you even knowing, he was looking after you. The slightest things he was asking you about were just ok checks. And why he was doing it? Steve. Of course, it was for his idiot friend Steve.
Bucky was doing a serious super-secret inside job at their place - he was telling Steve everything about you, making him think about you all night long as if your long calls and photos didn't do that job as well.
It was teamwork. Bucky was reminding Steve almost every day of the week and Sam was encouraging him to make the move finally. They even stop to argue for a short amount of time just to work on Steve's mind. They were trying their best shots with Steve at that very moment.
---
"All I'm saying is she had a beautiful dress on today. You really should've seen them." - Bucky said from eating his bowl of yogurt and cereal. He just came back from Deena's apartment, smelling like hot and steamy sex and sin, his eyes shining like the stars.
"Old man, I think you're shooting the air here. He's not gonna do anythin' about that. He's too shy. He's too nice. Not like you bending that skirt over the first month." - Sam just added, chewing on a mango.
"Sorry, I forgot it's Steve we're talking about here." - Bucky said in answer. It was back and forth for the last few long, long weeks in Steve's perspective. James and Sam could cooperate on a seriously good level when they tried to. That was just the way it was.
"You're not helping. Natasha is very angry with me when I start to spar with her and I'm out of my head because I just see her face in my mind, I don't even take notice on the meetings and Tony is ready to kill me on the spot, I don't seem to do my paperwork well and I don't feel easy in the last... Three weeks. I'm in constant stress an in a carousel of reminders. You got under my skin and I don't find it funny anymore." - Steve just straightaway yelled at the two of them from a moment to moment. Sam and Bucky were scared the hell out. Steve was the calm guy, who tried to find a solution in absolutely every situation.
But now he was on edge. He just snapped. Both of them sat in silence while Steve got into his room and almost broke the door when he shut them with all the force he got in his body.
"I think we stepped too far, Buck. I've never seen Steve acting like that." - Sam said when the quiet between them became unbearable.
"No. Trust me. Things are going just the way they should. This is the thing we've been waiting for the whole time. Give him a few more hours and voilà. The magic's done." - Buck smiled wickedly and continued with eating his cereal. Sam could barely stand still, he was nervous because of what state they were able to get Steve into.
The apartment was deadly silent for the next whole day. Every time Steve got out of his room and met Sam or James in the flat, he just stared them down, took his things, food or whatever and disappeared back in his room again.
Those few days were seriously crucial. Steve was acting like a small child - even Natasha wasn't able to get him out of his room when Steve didn't come to their sparring session. Although you were texting him numerous times, Steve hasn't answered a single one, which made you worried as well.
---
"Hi, James." - You approached Deena's table nervously. You were spinning with your fingers and Bucky could tell that you're not feeling too good. In the last few days, something was circling through your head. You sighed all the times, you weren't laughing at his dumb questions and jokes, you were just acting weirdly.
"Hey, sunshine. Come and sit with us. You want some plums?" - He gave you one of them and smiled at you happily.
"I have a question." - Your voice sounded sour and quiet. You were just out of your mind. - "Would you mind answering it?"
"I'm an open book. Just ask me." - James smiled at you with his baby blue eyes. Deena knew what topic you are going to pick, so she took all of her papers, stood up, kissed Bucky's cheek and left the table.
"Have I done something... Wrong? You know, have I told Steve anything bad, he didn't like my appearance or my nature? Because... I don't have a single idea about what wrong have I done. I just simply don't." - You said sadly and he could see the tears in your eyes. Steve hadn't text you for five days, which was an unbelievable thing for somebody like him.
"Aaah, baby girl." - Bucky hugged your shoulder to make you smile a bit. - "You're fine. You're more than fine. He's just conflicted at the moment, sometimes it's harder with him. All you need to do now is to have some patience, don't be stressed and have some plums."
"You like those plums a lot, right?" - You tried to joke with a sad done.
"Sweetheart, you have no idea. Plums are a cure for everything." - Bucky answered and started to chew another one. Somehow he always has an endless supply of plums everywhere he went to. And he always got one for everyone.
"Don't you start about those fucking plums. I'm on a plum diet since I'm dating this guy. I've eaten tons of them." - Deena appeared behind James after getting some new paperwork from May. - "I left you the papers I've finished on the table. They should be ok, but you should rework them to how you like the work done."
"Yeah. I'm going to go through them now. Thank you." - You smiled a bit, took two plums from James and hugged him quickly in a friendly matter. He was a sweet, sweet guy.
---
"Steve, we need to talk." - Bucky knocked on his door with a frown on his face. - "I'm done with your acting as a child phase."
"And I'm done with your brainwashing program. Some things are not as we expect them to be." - Steve hummed through the door. Steve felt like if he was in a tight corner made by Buck and Sam themselves. He wanted her so much, yet those paranoid things were louder and louder in his own head. What if you back out when you'll see who he actually is? Will you freak out? Would you just say no to him? Would you even want to go out?
There were so many questions in the air for him. And he heard them almost every time he saw any part of his own body in the mirror. And that was Bucky's artwork.
"I'll go straight to the things I want to say. That girl is all over you, that girl is now sad in her office because your dumb ass is not showing any sign of interest. Go and call that girl. Take her out." - Bucky told in a firm voice. He was done with Steve at that point. And Steve was done with Bucky's doctrine.
Everyone seemed to be done with everything at that point.
"Can't you see that she doesn't care who the hell you are? You could be even birdbrain and she wouldn't care. You should take your chances as they are and just try it." - Bucky warned him and then left the door, taking his jacket and called Deena that he'll have a sleepover at her place. That left Steve all alone at the flat.
But he knew that Bucky is totally right. He should act on his chances. You were worth all of that.
So he just called your number without any further thinking. You answered after a minute of dialing.
"Hi." - You said a bit coldly. That was his treason for the absence he had. It was numerous days since he heard you, you sounded like a lullaby, so sweetly and lovely.
"Hey. I'm... I'm so sorry. This is all my fault." - Steve said without further dialogue.
"I'm not going to lie. Twenty texts. You made me worried." - That's when it hit his ears. Bucky was totally right, he made you sad. It was all Steve's fault. Your voice was sweet as usual, but it had some bitterness in it. You were angry with him. That was for sure.
"This is not easy for me, okay? I'm really nervous right now." - Steve stuttered and your blood went immediately ice cold. Steve was going to tell you that you're not a thing anymore. That he's done with it.
"You don't have to worry. I think I get what you mean." - You said and your voice broke down. He heard the mourning in it.
"So you don't want to go out with me?" - Steve said in a tight voice, he said it quickly and practically choked it all out.
"Are you serious? Like deadly serious?" - That didn't convince you at all. You were ironical as hell.
"I am completely serious. Let's just go on a date." - He repeated in a completely straight tone. And he knew that this thing will change his life from the basics he thought he knew.

3/16/20 COVID in Seattle
3/16/20 - I decided to start a blog today. I am not much of a writer but I thought I document what was going on during the COVID-19 pandemic in the epicenter of the U.S.- Seattle, WA.  It’s more to share with my family and friends.  I also thought I’d share a few pictures each day.
I have 2 boys - one a junior in college who is likely to come home soon and finish the year virtually and the other is a senior in HS.  His senior year will be much different than most seniors -  the main thing is is sad about missing is his baseball season - he could care less about prom, graduation, yearbook, etc.  Baseball is his life.  Right now he is going to Fordham to play baseball next year and will be playing on a collegiate team this summer.
I work in healthcare as does my husband - we both are on the admin side so we can work at home.  We are very fortunate.  The real heroes are the front line care givers in our community - bless them.  Infection rates are rising- people are dying; we are needing more PPE... Hospitals and healthcare organizations are cancelling elective surgeries/procedures and evaluating what services to provide.  There is even talk about bringing a naval ship to serve as a hospital.  Social distancing is what we all need to practice now.
Everything is closed in Seattle now.  Schools could be closed until May or June.  The governor closed bars, restaurants, gyms, hair/nail salons, most services, sporting venues, etc. - only thing open is grocery stores and pharmacies (I think gas stations too).  I am going to need a foil when I emerge and I don’t know what to do about my nails since I have acrylic and gel.
Like many places in the U.S. there is no toilet paper here - none on Amazon, Walmart or Target on line, or my grocery store.  My sister who lives in MA is mailing me some tomorrow.  I just ordered 6 pounds of espresso roast - I need a latte every morning.
The pictures above are from Carkeek Park in Seattle.  I hike/walk there about 4 - 5 per week - link: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/find/parks/carkeek-park.  It is my park.  I can walk there from home and hike 3 to 5 miles and walk through the forest and see the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.  I always bring my Labradoodle - Griffey - he’s my buddy.
Today it was 50 degrees and sunny and a very low tide.  I love low tides - always have.  I like to look for crabs and starfish and other sea creatures.  I make a point of putting the low tides on my calendars.  I used to take my kids to Carkeek for low tides and I ended up liking it more than them. I could not go down there today because dogs are not allowed on this beach :(.  It was also windy on my walk today.  I hate the wind - I always worry that the trees will come down on me - we have a lot of wind storms here.  Today I thought to myself - am I more likely to have a tree fall down on me or get COVID.  Not a good thought.
The other thing I started today was working out with my 17 yo son.  We started the AthleanX workouts - made to do at home while we are all in quarantine.  My goal during this period (which has been a couple weeks already) is to exercise 2 - 3 hours per day (yoga, lifting, hiking, whatever) and eat healthy.  Who knows, maybe a new me will emerge after the quarantine.
Until tomorrow - good night.

Last Call - Chapter 1
Synopsis: Beca Mitchell hasn't seen or spoken to Chloe Beale in a year. Something happens and Beca leaves Chloe a message. Some angst and drama ahead.
It was just past 7:30 am on a foggy Friday morning when Beca Mitchell said goodbye to her mother and stepped onto the ferry that would take her into downtown Seattle. She had visited with her mom for the last few days and now had to return to her press tour for her debut album. She was scheduled to be on Seattle's iHeart Radio show that morning and then had various press interviews that afternoon.
Beca was hoping if she kept busy today she wouldn't have to think about what happened one year ago today. She stood at the second deck railing staring out into the waters of Puget Sound trying to think of anything but Chloe Beale. She had no control over it, so her memory went back to that day exactly one year ago. They were in Paris and Beca had just given her first solo appearance.
Beca couldn't believe that she and Chloe had finally gotten together a few weeks before the USO tour. Beca had just finished her first solo concert and was on a high when she spotted Chloe walking toward the back of the Citadel. She followed after Chloe, ready to take her girlfriend to the celebration that DJ Khaled's label had planned for her. She saw Chloe go through an arch and followed her. Her heart dropped as soon as she stepped through the arch. There, in front of her, was Chloe kissing Chicago.
"What the hell, Chloe?"
Chloe pulled back from the kiss and looked at Beca. She asked Chicago to give them a minute. He nodded his head and walked away. Chloe looked at Beca.
"I'm sorry, Beca, but I didn't mean for you to see that before I had a chance to talk to you," Chloe said nervously seeing the pained look in Beca's eyes. "I didn't want to say anything earlier because I didn't want to mess up your performance. I think, I, um. I think I need some time to figure some things out."
"Figure out what exactly?"
"Figure out what my feelings are for Chicago. And you."
"What's that supposed to mean? I thought you loved me."
"I did, do," Chloe told her unable to look her in the eye. "I do, but, I also have strong feelings for Chicago. Since you're going to L.A., I thought I'd stay here with him for another week and see how things go."
Beca felt her heart shatter and her eyes teared up. "You told me you were in love with me."
"So much is changing. You're going to be in L.A.; I'm starting Vet School in New York. I don't know, Beca. It's all so confusing, and I'm not sure about anything anymore."
"So, just like that? You no longer love me, but some guy who you've known for all of five days. You can't be with me because I'll be L.A. and you'll be in New York. But, you can be with a guy who's on the other side of the world from you."
"I'm sorry, Beca. I can't explain it, but there's just something about him. It just happened. It has nothing to do with how I feel about you."
"It has everything to do with how you feel about me," Beca yelled. "Or should I say, how you don't feel about me?"
Chloe stood with tears falling down her cheeks. "I don't want to hurt you, but I feel like I owe it to myself to see where this thing with Chicago goes. I'm sorry. No matter what happens, I hope we can still at least be friends."
"Are you serious?" Beca was hurt and angry. "What do you expect me to do? Leave you here and go off to L.A. and sit and wait for you to decide to fully dump me over the phone or by text? No thanks! Stay with Chicago and don't worry about me. I'm done!" Beca turned and walked away from Chloe. She yelled back over her shoulder, "Oh, and as for being friends, fuck you!"
Beca heard Chloe let out a sob as she continued to walk away. She listened, but Chloe never called out her name like she used to whenever Beca walked away from her. She didn't let the tears fall until she was almost back to the hotel.
A little while later, Beca found Theo and told him she wanted to fly to L.A. immediately. Theo made the arrangements and had Beca on a plane early the next morning. She avoided everyone and turned off her phone. She ignored texts and phone calls, especially those from Chloe and the Bellas. She never looked at or listened to any of them. Once she was in L.A., she got a new phone and a new number, and never looked back.
Beca hadn't spoken to Chloe, or any of the Bellas for that matter, since that day. Amy and Aubrey both tried to reach her through the label, but she gave the receptionist a list of people who she did not want to talk to, no matter what. The list consisted of Chloe and all the other Bellas. She half expected Amy and Aubrey to show up at the studio one day, but they haven't.
Beca was brought out of her thoughts when the ferry lurched causing her to grab the railing to keep from falling. Suddenly, the ferry lurched again and she was thrown to the deck. She tried to stand and grabbed onto a doorway. There was a loud noise and she was thrown into an inside observation room. She hit her head on something and then there was nothing but darkness.
~oOo~ ~oOo~ ~oOo~
It was just past 2:00 pm in Atlanta when Chloe found herself sitting at the bar she, Stacie and Aubrey had become regulars at since it was just a few blocks from their shared apartment. She knocked back another tequila shot and slammed the glass down on the bar.
"Another," she said getting the bartender's attention.
The guy sitting two seats away from her was watching her. "Are you celebrating something? Or trying to drink away a memory?"
"Trying to drink away a memory," Chloe said and downed the shot.
"May I ask what memory?"
"One year ago today is the day I lost my best friend and the love of my life. She was my everything, and I lost her because of some guy who turned out to be a major dick and married."
"Wow," the guy said. "If you're not with the guy, why haven't you tried reaching out to her? Sometimes a simple apology goes a long way."
"She ghosted me," Chloe replied twirling her finger around her glass to let the bartender know she wanted another. "Cut me totally out of her life."
"Can't say that I blame her," the guy said. At Chloe's glare, he held up his hands saying, "Sorry."
"It's okay. You're right and I don't blame her either," Chloe said. "I just wish I had the courage to find her and beg her to forgive me. Even if she doesn't love me anymore, we were once best friends. I miss that. I miss her."
The guy took a sip of his drink and heard the sounds of a phone ringing. He looked over at Chloe since it sounded like it was coming from her direction. Chloe hadn't made a move to answer it.
"Your phone is ringing," the guy told Chloe.
~oOo~ ~oOo~ ~oOo~
Beca's head jerked up and she sputtered. The water was all around her and she was being held up by something or someone. Her head was killing her and she had no idea what was happening. She put her hand to her head and groaned.
"You hit your head," a voice said close to Beca's ear.
Startled, she tried to look over her shoulder but couldn't see because it was fairly dark.
"I'm Ben," the voice said.
"Beca," Beca told him. "What happened? How long was I out?"
"Something hit the ferry," Ben said. "Or the ferry hit something. Whichever, the ferry partially sank. We're in an air pocket somewhere inside the ferry. I was thrown around quite a bit, so I have no idea where. I think you've been out for about an hour, maybe a little longer."
Beca let this information sink in. She tried to look around but could only see flashes of sunlight reflecting in the water. They were silent and Beca felt herself wanting to close her eyes. Beca could feel herself relaxing and then stiffening.
She took a deep breath and said, "We're not getting out of this, are we?" Beca's voice was thick with tears.
"Don't think like that," Ben said. "I believe we're going to make it."
Beca realized Ben was supporting her entire weight. "I can swim," Beca said. "You can let go of me."
"Only for a few minutes," Ben said. "And only because my arms are feeling kind of numb."
Ben loosened his grip on Beca and she moved her arms to keep herself afloat. Beca's eyes adjusted to the dark and could see that Ben's head and shoulders were above the water. Ben reached his arms up and shook them a few times. He then rubbed up and down his arms.
"How are you not sinking?," Beca asked looking at him.
"I'm standing on what I think is a table," Ben said. "We're in a large air pocket so we should be okay. I don't want you to have to try and stay afloat on your own. So, please give me a couple of minutes, and I'll hold you up again. I'm worried about that hit you took to the head and I don't want you tiring yourself out."
"How did you come to be holding onto me?," Beca asked.
"I kept struggling and finally made it out of the water into this air pocket and then you popped up next to me," Ben said. "Not gonna lie, I thought you were dead at first. I turned you over to check and you took a breath, so I found something to set my feet on and started keeping your head above water."
"Thank you for that," Beca said. Beca tired quickly and let out a yawn.
"I've got you," Ben said pulling Beca back to him. "Close your eyes and rest. You're going to need all the strength you can to get out of here."
"What about you?," Beca said. "You can't keep holding me up. You're going to get tired again."
"I had some time to think while you were out and I've got an idea," Ben said. "I'm standing on a table. I'm guessing there are other tables in the water. What if I can find another one and stack it on top of this one? We might be able to sit and keep our heads above water."
"I'm kind of short. You might need a third table," Beca said and laughed.
Ben chuckled. "I think we'll be fine with two."
It was dark and Beca could barely see Ben's features, but she could tell he was worried.
"We can both get the table," Beca said.
"Okay," Ben said. "You hold onto my belt and we'll go together. Are you ready?"
"No," Beca said. "But, let's do it anyway."
Ben let go of Beca and she grabbed his belt. They both went under the water. Ben led the way and ran into an object and determined it was another table. They maneuvered it next to their original table but had to resurface for air.
They were both breathing heavy and waited until their breathing had settled. "We just need to lift the table and stack on top of the other. We shouldn't have to be underwater as long as last time. You ready?"
"Ready," Beca said.
They both dipped back under the water and managed to maneuver the table on top of the other. They resurfaced and Beca sat cross-legged on the table. The water was up to her chest but she felt better knowing Ben was more comfortable.
Beca put her hand to her head and Ben told her it was okay for her to rest. Beca was afraid to close her eyes, but before she knew it, she had dozed off. She jerked awake after and was sitting between Ben's legs with her back to him. Ben had his arms wrapped around her waist, holding onto her. The water was now up to her shoulders.
"Sorry," Beca said. "I'm just really tired."
Ben didn't say anything. They stayed quiet for a bit.
"I called my wife," Ben said softly. "Just in case we don't, um. Anyway, my phone's waterproof. Is there anyone you want to call?"
Beca let out a small sob. She really wanted to call Chloe and tell her she still loved her and that she was sorry for walking away.
"No," Beca said.
"It might make you feel better about things," Ben said.
"Could I just talk to you about it?," Beca asked.
"Sure," Ben said. "Tell me whatever you want."
Beca moved out of Ben's arms and sat cross-legged facing him. She spent what felt like an hour telling Ben all about Chloe. How they met, even the shower incident. She told him about how she finally told Chloe how she felt about her and Chloe had told her she felt the same way. She stopped for a moment.
"You can stop," Ben said. "I don't need to hear any more."
"No," Beca said. "It still hurts but it's part of our story."
"Then tell me," Ben said.
Beca then recounted how they ended up in Europe on a USO tour. And, about how she found Chloe kissing Chicago and how Chloe had decided to stay behind to see how things went with him.
"That must have sucked," Ben said.
Beca chuckled. "Maybe a little."
Ben started to say something when it felt like the ferry dropped and the tables they were sitting on shifted throwing them both into the water. Beca fell backward and Ben tried to grab her but his weight caused the table to fall toward him and they lost each other in the water.
Beca felt like she bounced off the table leg and then was being turned this way and that; she didn't know which way was up. She panicked slightly but finally managed to get her head above the water line and took in a big breath of air. She kept herself afloat and coughed a bit before her breathing returned to somewhat normal. The air pocket she was in felt smaller than before. She pushed the hair off her face and began to panic when she realized that Ben hadn't surfaced.
"Ben!"
Beca went back under the water to see if she could find Ben. She came back up and went down again until breathing became an issue and she had to stop. It was too dark to see and she hadn't been able to find Ben. The tears came and Beca started feeling dizzy. She shook her head to clear it.
"I'm going to make that phone call now," Beca mumbled. She had trouble keeping her head above water as she reached to pull her phone out of her jacket pocket. She managed to get her phone out and sunk down into the water. She struggled back up. She laughed and cried for a bit when her head popped out of the water. "I'm glad I paid extra for the waterproof phone," she said and laughed a laugh that was tinged with both a little bit of humor and a whole lot of hysteria.
Beca fought down her panic and found Chloe's number. She was glad she put all the Bellas' numbers back in a few months ago. It was during one of those odd times she thought about calling and changed her mind. She took a deep breath before pressing the call button. The phone started ringing.
~oOo~ ~oOo~ ~oOo~
"Your phone is ringing," the guy told Chloe.
"Let 'em call back," Chloe said and got the bartender's attention.
The bartender walked over and set a bottle of water in front of Chloe and walked away.
"This isn't what I wanted," Chloe yelled after him.
"Aubrey's on her way," the bartender told her.
Chloe huffed and tried to stand up, only to flop back down on her stool. She decided to sit there and drink the water.
"Chloe," Aubrey said and sighed when she spotted her best friend.
"Brey, leave me alone," Chloe said teary-eyed. "I just need this today. Please?"
Chloe started crying and Aubrey paid her tab. She helped Chloe up and led her out of the bar to her car. She buckled Chloe in and got behind the wheel and drove off.
"Have you eaten today?," Aubrey asked. Chloe remained silent. "Let's get some food in you and then I'll take you home."
"I just want Beca," Chloe cried. "It's been a year, Brey. One year today. I should never have kissed Chicago. I should never have told Beca I was staying with him. I should never have let her walk away." Chloe let out a sob and let the tears fall. "I still love her, Brey. Why did I have to fuck it up so bad with her? She hates me."
"She doesn't hate you," Aubrey said.
"Then why did she shut me out of her life?"
"She didn't just shut you out of her life," Aubrey snapped at her."She shut us all out."
"I never thought she'd run away and just erase me, us, from her life," Chloe said.
"She was upset by what happened between you two. I don't want to be a bitch, Chloe, but you broke her heart. Something you swore you would never do. And for what? Some married douchebag who just wanted to get into your pants? You're smarter than that."
"Apparently not," Chloe mumbled and stared out the window.

Meed4: The Power of Identity - Meet The Applicants
Gallery19 is excited to start introducing our applicants for our fourth annual juried competition, Meed4: The Power of Identity. A call for entries was put out, and a wave of applicants answered our call! We’d like to thank all that have answered us so far.
Now introducing Tony Halstead
Tumblr media
Tony Halstead was born and raised in California.
He graduated from the prestigious Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles, California.
During many years as an art director / creative director, spending his time in large LA & San Francisco ad agencies, Tony took classes to learn how to work in leaded glass. After learning the craft, he opened his glass studio in an old high ceiling brick loft in downtown Hermosa Beach, CA.
Tony took a sabbatical from the advertising world and began designing and building leaded glass art statements. The art is framed in 5 inch deep hardwood light boxes that bathe a room in amazing color.
Tumblr media
(work pictured: Gene Pool Drawing)
Today, Tony is creating new work in a very different medium and he finds the new approach is truly similar in expression. His use of line, color and texture are very related. The selection of subject matter and tongue & cheek attitude is present in all of his work.
On paper Tony creates line drawings better known as “doodles”. They are created in conference room meetings, bars and many other places. Some drawings are more complex than others.
The drawings are highly influenced by his environment and lifestyle. Some negative and some positive moments captured in time. He selects past doodles or newly created doodles as the base to kick- start each of his creations. He scans the line drawing into his Mac and embellishes it with color, more line and sometimes photography to create his work.
Tony is a true a Fantasist. Creating colorful analogies to life experiences and findings.
Doodling. Visual notes.
“I am called to the conference room to join in on a meeting with anywhere from a few to a roomful
of my colleagues and clients gathered to solve a problem or exchange ideas. The room is a mixture of smart and not so smart executives with good and not so good ideas. Politics is always present, sometimes light and sometimes heavy. In this environment of the meeting place, I start to doodle on a note pad or any piece of paper I might have on hand. I have absolutely nothing in mind about what I’m drawing on paper or where it’s headed. No previous concept or plan that I know of. I am watching, listening and even giving my verbal opinions as my doodling continues. It is like my senses collecting the input and my hand produces the visual or the interpretation of the meeting. Of course, always from my personal point of view.”
It is between Tony’s brain and his hand. Add the draftsman skills he’s learned over the years and the doodle becomes a more sophisticated sketch. By definition: a doodle is an aimless or casual scribble, design or sketch. Also: referred to as a minor work.
“Do I have opinions about what is going down on the paper? I must. Is there a beginning and an end- ing to the doodle? I think there is a beginning but, maybe not an ending unless I just stop working on it.
When the meeting is over. The doodle is finished.
Tumblr media
(work pictured: Gene Pool)
Tony’s new series is created on the idea that the doodle is the beginning of organizing thoughts, or releasing a visual message. He suspects a very personal time and very personal observation of what’s going on around him. “Let’s call it a snapshot or recording of a certain period of time related to the doodler only. This of course is what all artists do.”
“When I took an advanced class in psychology at UCLA with a well known psychologist that I admired a lot, instead of writing notes the traditional way, I decided to do a drawing or doodle during every session. There were about a dozen drawings at the end of the series of classes. Looking through my drawings, with a huge smile, the psychologist, said, “you are truly nuts.” Somehow I felt okay about that. I recorded his entire lecture series in visual notes. Strictly my interpretation of his words.”
One of Tony’s doodles from the class has become the base drawing for one of his new finished cre- ations called Gene Pool. Gene pool is about the family / DNA make-up of every person alive. Generations of family talking to you about what is right and wrong. Ways of the family. Directing you how to act, how to deal with God, your ego issues, how to stand and pose, how you feel and act about violence & passiveness. In- structing you to live a certain way. Lots and lots of advice.
“I don’t really need a conference room today and as you’d guess, I produce doodles just about any- where I happen to be. Also I can use my digital camera to capture slices of life I want to work with.” Tony has created 30 digital paintings since 2006. In 2007 he exhibited five leaded glass statements along with five of his digital paintings at the Kaos Gallery in Florida.
In 2002 he and his wife Patti moved from Hermosa Beach California to Sarasota on the Gulf Coast of Florida. In 2008 they left Florida and headed back to the West Coast and settled in the Puget Sound area of Washington where Tony is now creating his art with a passion.

San Junipero
I just finished watching the highly acclaimed “San Junipero” episode of Black Mirror.  My god, what a beautifully put together piece of art.  The aesthetics, the cinematography, the acting, the story, everything was utterly top notch.  It was quite moving and unexpectedly sweet in its ending.
Of the many things I loved in the epsiode, I’ve been really ruminating over the early dialogue from the 1987 section, at the dance club, where everybody looked overwhelmingly ‘80s.  Like, too ‘80s.  I obviously wasn’t around in the ‘80s, but based on accounts from people who did live then that I know, as well as looking at actual photographs and the like from then, of actual people, and how they lived, it did seem almost caricatured.  Then there was the line of (and I’m paraphrasing) “everyone looks like they saw it in a movie,” it being the attire of everyone in the club.  It’s true.  The gateway to eras one wasn’t apart of for a lot of people is in the pop culture, such as movies, which can gloss over or hyperbolize reality.  There’s also a tendency in nostalgic aesthetic preferences to pluck the most “standout” (yet still aesthetically pleasing -- nothing too outrageous) to hone in on an era.  Were the ‘80s really that ‘80s, or was the San Junipero version was basically cliche? Beyond that, while it was ostensibly 1987 in San Junipero, the social attitudes of the denizens therein seemed a bit more 21st century.  The 1987 was not a true 1987, but merely a shallow imitation, not unlike a throwback night at your local dance club.  Perhaps that was the point, it was a digital simulation, after all, filled with people decades into the future.
I was hanging out with a friend recently, and we had some 2010s smooth techno playing on YouTube.  The video made me say to them, “man, it really is the ‘90s.”  The aesthetic choices (especially fashion) were ripped right from 199x, and yet, the artist didn’t look like they were old enough to actually remember the ‘90s.  I could be wrong of course, but there’s no question that the ‘90s are the nostalgic focus of this decade, following the 20 year trend of nostalgia (ie the ‘00s were focused on the ‘80s, and the ‘90s were focused on the ‘70s).  And in 2018, today’s teens were born, at latest, in mid-1998, and therefore too young to actually remember the era they’re appropriating.  The ‘90s to a kid today is about vintage Champion tees and thin-framed glasses and less about dial-up ‘net and the Clinton sex scandal.  And I don’t mean this judgmentally -- rather it is just a matter of fact.  You could say the same thing about my time and the ‘80s.  In fact if you remember that 2000s hipster kitty meme, I distinctly remember one of the taglines being “the ‘80s were awesome” and below it read “born in 1991.”
I guess it all begs the question of what do we really know of the past?  Yes, we lived in an advanced technological age, where vast archives of our lives are accumulating with each passing year.  I read a while ago about this couple who lived on one of those islands in the Puget Sound near Seattle, attempting to live an authentically 19th century existence, from their transportation choices to their wardrobe to everything.  They’d done extensive research in order to get a true feeling for the Victorian era, reading newspapers, personal accounts, literature, the whole thing.  So, to an extent, provided we keep an archive, we can know of the modern past, anyway.  But further back it’s harder.  One of Aristotle’s books was lost after the fall of the Roman Empire, and who knows how revolutionary it would’ve been on Western civilization.  One day our archives may go through a similar beating as the Classical archives did in the Middle Ages.
My point is that most people are not going to go in-depth to become a living, breathing period piece like the aforementioned Washington State couple.  For most of us, we get our cues from pop culture, and thus get a Cole’s Notes edition of the past, which blurs further and further, as time goes on, to fewer highlights.  Or at least for those that never lived in the time, which also increases as time goes on.  And even if you do extensive research, it can never fully replace the feeling of having actually lived through an era, especially as it is happening, without knowledge of what is to come.  Despite our best attempts, human ideas and feelings are often too abstract and what we record visually, literally, sonically, whatever, is merely a stripped down version that can’t fully encapsulate the endless abstraction of what it means to be a human in a particular time and place.  We may get 90, 95, maybe even 99% of the way there, but we can’t ever fully know without having lived it.
So, I guess, the 1987 of San Junipero is a realization of that reality.  We get our cues from the movies, so we think everyone in the ‘80s lived like an ‘80s movie.  Not to say that that our appropriation of past aesthetics is inaccurate, just very curated, and at times shallow.  Obviously shoulder pads and jean jackets were a fixture of ‘80s fashion, but a lot of social issues and personal inclinations of the ‘80s were glossed over in ‘80s film (and in other eras) and so when we look to film, it is often not the whole picture of what an era was like.  Actually, I find newer “period piece” type films that look back at past eras can sometimes pick up on these things better, as we’ve had time to let the things that occurred in that time to absorb and be reflected upon.  It took a few years for AIDS to show up in film, for example.  It doesn’t always work, though.  Like, I think most people today get a sense of the ‘80s from Stranger Things, and while the aesthetics are on point, as are the supernatural inclinations of media, aside from some cheap homophobic slurs early on, it feels more like a set of people with 2010s values plopped into the 1980s.
I suppose more fundamentally, as time stretches forward, the past, even for those that lived it, just becomes a story we play back to ourselves, distorting and contorting, as our memory slowly fails us.  Thank god we’re uploading our personalities online, right?  Because Instagram is obviously an authentic look at how we live today. In 50 years, I swear people will still be trying to understand the hashtag “livefolk.” I guess it doesn’t matter that much anyway.  As the popular internet saying goes, “I’m here for a good time, not a long time,” hitting at the core of the absurdist inclinations of internet culture today.  Still, it is sad for me to think of all that we’ve known from our collective lives, just withering into oblivion, and our archive a mere ersatz edition of the true past, a vain attempt to preserve something that cannot be preserved.

Merry Christmas everyone! I’m still alive! I didn’t have to work today or yesterday, so that was really nice! We went to 5pm Christmas eve mass and it started snowing on our way there! Now, for those of you not from the puget sound area, you might not know how freaking exciting this was! We don’t get much snow around here and we definitely don’t get white christmases! It kept snowing and we had a bunch to wake up to! It was beautiful! Today we had a really relaxing day at home. The dog actually woke everyone up early this morning, so we got up, went through our stockings and had breakfast! Then we opened some presents, took a break so my mom could wrap some more and then finished those. We watched Elf (I promptly fell asleep, but I didn’t sleep great last night) Then we watched it’s a wonderful life while dinner was cooking. Then dinner, then I had to go check on my friend’s critters while my family made more cookies. I hung out at my friends house and played with her pets while I watched some food network competitions and then came back home to watch The Santa Clause! Lots of good Christmas movie watching. Lots of good food. Lots of good presents and lots of love! I hope everyone else had a good Christmas! I’m not ready to go back to work tomorrow. I’m not ready for Christmas to be over. I just feel like I didn’t full get “into it” this year which bums me out. I think having a white christmas was definitely the best part and I’m super thankful to not have had to rush anywhere. Hope all in well in Tumblrland! I’ll find my way back eventually!
