Can you recommend like a fun, silly, summery drama? I'm looking for similar vibes as Cheer Up or Age of Youth (female friendships are a plus). It's hard to find something without melodrama.

First off, I LOVE your user icon! (- ‿◦ )

And I definitely want to help you find something silly and easy to watch, especially as we enter the depths of winter! Some of these are a little less slice of life but still fun. Also I know you already watched/mentioned a couple of these but I'm adding them to the list for everyone else who might be game!

Light Hearted Fun K-dramas (little or no melo)

Soundtrack #1 (slice of life/romance) Best friends for almost 20 years, the two leads start having feelings for one another while working on a project. This drama only has a few episodes which is a shame because it's really cute! As a Park Hyung Sik Stan (sorry but Happiness broke me), he's great in this one and he hasn't lost all of his military weight yet which I LOVE :D

Fanletter Please! (slice of life/ romance) A sick child writes fan letters to her favorite star, an actress who for kdrama reasons is afraid of fan letters. This was a super sweet, short drama - I really liked it so much!

Into The Ring (workplace/romcom): The perfect slice-of-life rom com! Goo Se Ra has trouble holding down a job due to her passionate personality so after she loses her latest job working for the ML, she decides to run for a small government office position because it pays a salary. Literally she does it for the money which is just *chef’s kiss.* The show is about her dealing with local politics and it’s SO FUNNY and smart and the OTP is the best!

King The Land (rom/com): A cold chaebol hotel owner meets his match (literally and figuratively) who is a top notch employee. There's a lot of push pull and the ML (MY BIAS!) Lee Junho's character falls hard and fast. It does have slow moments but if you literally want to watch a happy couple be happy (plus the skinship is chef's kiss and there is so much of it) you'll enjoy this one.

Melo Is My Nature (slice of life): This drama is by far my favorite slice-of-life drama of 2019. Found family, strong and complex characters, I laughed, I cried. Plus a gay character that’s an actual character, with the gay as a casual side note (classy k-drama!!) It was just a perfect show for me. There’s romance, but all of the stories are super interesting.

Top Management (slice of life) I know this show is mainly on Youtube Premium BUT I just got an email from Youtube basically saying “hey we know you never want to pay to watch our shows so we’re just going to let you ok?” so that’s something… Adorable mini drama about a girl who can see the future and becomes the rookie manager for a kpop band. Fun and easy.

Business Proposal (rom/com) Seriously this drama is almost the exact same plot as The Secret Life of My Secretary. It's really fun and cute (just like the latter) and if you like one, you'll like the other ;-)

True To Love / Bo Rah Deborah (rom/com) Bo Rah is a relationship expert publishing her book. She works with a man who is her total opposite making it a cute enemies to lovers. Yoo in Ah is literally so adorable I love watching her! (If I'm honest I can't remember a TON about this drama but I do remember it being an easy watch).

Her Private Life (romcom): Park Min Young really knows how to pick dramas. I loved this one about a museum curator who is secretly a fangirl obsessed with an idol. It’s fun and fluffy but does have a very mild childhood trauma thing with his mother but I mean, 99% of dramas like this do? If you like this one, Touch Your Heart and Why Secretary Kim are by the same person and have similar vibes.

Touch Your Heart (rom/com) A sweet, silly and very mild rom com about a serious boss and his hallyu star secretary. This show was an obvious response to the chemistry that Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na had in Goblin so it was nice to see them together again. Yoo In Na is such a fun person to watch!

Fight for My Way (slice of life/romcom): I love this drama! Always a fave for me, this drama is funny and heartwarming! The leading lady is a strong female which I LOVE, and Park Seo Joon plays her really cute down to earth best friend. It’s a childhood friends to lovers trope with a group of regular people (no rich heirs in this show!) and has a happy ending and a lot of cute flirting, cuddling and kissing. Argh I love these two!

Age of Youth 1 (slice of life): Age of Youth/ Hello My Twenties is one of the best k-dramas that centers around strong female friendships. A group of wildly different girls find themselves rooming together in an apartment. Lots of romance too, but the girl’s lives and friendships are the primary focus.

Shopping King Louie (romcom): Ridiculously fun and lighthearted romp following a spoiled and useless chaebol with amnesia who is being taken care of by a country bumpkin in the city. Very low stakes, super adorable couple, and as many tropes as you can fit in your bag, this one is one of my favorites to recommend.

Eulachacha Waikiki / Laughter In Waikiki (slice of life comedy, romance) I hope you’re ready for a crazy amount of unlikely situations and nutty hijinks because this show is probably one the most silly ones I’ve ever watched. It follows a group of friends who own a hostel so it’s a slice of life drama. At certain points I was like “this is TOO silly” but I’m glad I stuck with it cause it was so hilarious. Plus, the baby is a star!

Wok of Love (rom/com) Despite the fact that the show was shortened by two episodes because of sports, this drama is a funny and quirky show worth watching. Many people dropped it because it was SO crazy for the first couple of episodes (it has a talking horse people!), but it does settle into a really sweet and fun story about a chef, a gangster and a rich girl and her family. If you love food, this show is for YOU!

And finally, if you don't mind a bit of melo, I highly recommend Run On!

hi! YESSSSSS, you asked the right person ;) there's not many lakorns (thai soap operas) they've been in, but I will simply include my favorite straight pairings they've been a part of (though in the case of off all of his characters are bi as we've established many times before 😌)

off in girl next room: richy rich

so not only is krathing my fave off character from a non bl show, but his pairing with mild in this???? absolutely scrumptious! the chemistry is more than here, they are hilarious together but also have deeper moments, and they're just without a doubt my favorite straight thai ship of all time <3

gun in the gifted

so the gifted is one of my favorite thai series of all time & gun is mostly known for his amazing performance in it, but his ship with jane is also very sweet as they're both pocket-sized and work surprisingly well together!

off in fabulous 30

so it feels like I'm just listing off's characters in order of how much I like them, but yes, on top of zen being THE most biconic off character after sean, khai & pick, his ship with gam whichayanee was absolutely LOVELY! I loved them together, the visuals were beautiful (bc I'm in love with both lol) and their story was actually the only thing that made the show interesting bc as much as I adore mond, sadly his main role & pairing weren't it. zenyui though??? SLAYED.

once again offmild is just the best off ship after offgun (and offtay if they were to actually happen lmaooo), and this proves it! they definitely take the backseat in this series as the secondary ship, but they were still amazing & looked incredible together! this is also off's most well ajusted role I've seen him in? so I'd definitely recommend!

gun in secret seven

gun was absolutely LOVELY as liftoil in secret seven, and his ship was silly, funny & just overall incredibly wholesome! secret seven is in general such a cute little romcom that I would recommend too! (the gif I had to choose doesn't represent the overall vibe of the show at all lmaoooo, but it was the only horizontal one I found :'))

off in wolf

so not only is por one of the cutest off's characters (with glasses!!!), but in this show he gets to act cute with literally every woman ever, punpun, jane, jan, a foreigner girl & many others... it's just iconic tbh!

bonus: gun in the currently airing three gentlebros show! has just started airing so I can't say much about it but his pairing with film sure promises to be fun :)

‘Dear Diary, I think I have feelings for a friend. Not Jimmy Jr. this time, I got over him before high school. I think I like Zeke. It started two weeks ago when we studied for that math test (I passed with a C by the way). We were going over the practice questions when his hand brushed mine, and Diary I felt sparks. Ever since I haven’t stopped thinking about him. I hadn’t realized how muscular Zeke got from the wrestling team, or how his smile is a little lopsided when he’s laughing. I can’t stop thinking about what kissing him in the middle of prom would be like, super romantic. I have an idea of how it would go: It starts when’- Louise slammed the journal shut with an exclamation.

“Oh, sick! I’m not reading this mushy crap!”

Gene grabbed the journal from his sister, “let me see, I want to know if her prom fantasy has as many musical-style dance numbers as mine.”

“Ugh, why do you and Tina get so excited about a stupid dance? It’s just an excuse to buy expensive dresses and go to after parties,” Louise huffed tossing her arms in the air, “but at least we know why Tina’s been acting silly in front of Zeke lately. Think he’ll ask her out?”

“Now that you mention it, Zeke has been acting funny around Tina. I mean, he’s been in love with her since junior high, but he’s never been nervous about it before.”

‘It starts when prom posters are put up. Prom is on the brain and boys are asking girls every day with cute promposals. Cue Zeke, at our usual lunch table with our friends, he waits until I sit down before pulling out a wooden horse from shop class with ‘Prom?’ carved on it. When I say yes, our friends cheer but everything fades as we touch hands.’

“You think Zeke would be up to this plan?” Louise asked, turning to Gene with a mischievous grin.

“I may have heard him talking with Jimmy Jr about tips for asking a girl to prom, so he may be receptive, but I thought you didn’t like all this stuff?”

Louise shrugged, looking away from her brother. She wouldn’t say it, but she could deal with the ‘mushy crap’ if it meant making her siblings happy. Complain the whole time about the sentimentalism and romantic gestures she would. But at the end of the day, Louise would endure the eye-roll worthy displays of romance if it meant Tina would be happy. Not that she would tell Gene or Tina any of that.

“I don’t, but this could involve getting Zeke in a horse costume to deliver the carving, and that would be funny,” Louise said, taking the journal to replace it among Tina’s desk clutter.

“Oh, what about getting a live horse and Zeke promposes on the beach!” Gene exclaimed.

“But that doesn’t involve a costume, save it for the marriage proposal,” Louise replied, with only mild sarcasm.

“Good point. This can be goofy and over the top with costumes, the horse can wait for the dramatic romcom wedding.”

Zeke was quick to jump on the horse costume plan, something Louise wasn’t surprised with when she remembered his mascot costume theft. Gene was able to borrow a costume from the drama club, leaving Zeke open to carving the horse during free a week of open wood shop at lunch. Louise tasked herself with distracting Tina from Zeke’s absence so that when the day finally came, two weeks after reading her diary, Tina was surprised when a horse-costumed Zeke delivered a carved horse to their table with ‘Prom?’ carved on its side.

Before Tina and Zeke entirely faded from their plane of existence into a world of their own, Louise leaned over to her sister.

“I already switched shifts with you this evening so you guys can have a date or something. You’re welcome.” It may have been a Friday night shift, one where she usually stayed up with popcorn and whatever movie marathon Louise managed to get a hold of, but for Tina’s happiness it was worth the sacrificed Friday night.

your date was going so well. perfect, actually. liam had rented out a whole movie theater for the two of you to watch some cheesy romcom. he didn’t care for it, but if it made you happy, it wouldn’t be so much of an issue.

the middle of the movie was quite boring, so you both found yourselves using the film as background noise.

“tell me a secret.” liam said, and in response you giggled like you were high off your mind.

“what do you mean? like what kind of a secret? you go first.” you insisted, taking a bite of your candy.

to your request, liam obliged, “i think this movie is ass.”

“that’s not a secret!” you laughed, tossing a piece of candy at him, “that’s just a confession!”

“there’s a difference?” liam raised a brow, taking a piece of your candy for himself as he listened to you.

“a secret is like, uh, something funny that you’d been hiding from me this whole time.”

liam shrugged, saying, “then it’s your turn to give me an example.”

“okay… what if i told you that i liked blur?”

“haha, funny. nice one, n/n.” liam tossed a piece of his popcorn right at you, hitting you smack dab in the forehead.

“um, liam…” you looked at your fingers, fidgeting with your thumbs, “i’m not really joking…”

“what do you mean? you like blur?”

“a lot of people do, but it’s no big deal.”

“well, i know that, sweetheart. but you’re acting so fuckin’ nervous, so what’s wrong?”

“i guess now’s a good time to tell you, maybe. damon and i are friends. i was kinda nervous to tell you because you kind of blow things out of proportion. you’re kind of over dramatic, honey.”

liam’s jaw dropped and he let out a surprised laugh. you and damon? friends!

and then it hit him… you and damon… friends… you were friends with the art school knob. the man who he supposed was relatively good looking. a guy who was funny, too.

and then liam’s smile dropped a bit. “that’s no big deal, love.”

“really?”

“uh-huh.”

“are you sure you’re okay?” you asked again.

and then there was no response. just your boyfriend nibbling away on popcorn and soda and watching the hideous romcom, eyes glued to the screen like a car crash. he even tried to shush you and get you to drop the ordeal and instead encouraged you to watch the flick.

“hello? liam? earth to liam?”

still no response.

“is someone jealous?”

liam finally turned back to you. “whaddaya mean? i’m not jealous! why would i be jealous of some pretty boy twat who makes shitty music. and i’m not over dramatic either! i’m just… uh… um… damnit.”

“you know i love you, right? there’s no need to be jealous of damon.”

“yeah?”

“mhm. y’know you’re more good looking, and the romantic gestures you show me are cute, and you make better music than damon and his band any day.”

“you’re just sayin’ that.” liam laughed.

“no! no i’m not! i think you’re talented and handsome and i’m happy you’re my boyfriend.”

okay, sure, you lied a little with the whole ‘blur < oasis’ thing. still, the sentiment was there. you continued to peck him again and again until he kissed you on a lips. when you two broke apart for air, he teased, “is there more where that came from?”

“hmm, i don’t know. damon is a better kisser.”

“what?!”

“it was a joke! i swear!!”

Dramas I’ve Been Watching in April

It’s that time again when I tell you what I’ve been watching and if I liked it (without spoilers). As always it’s a long post so everything’s under the cut.

I was struggling to find the other ones so now they’re all tagged monthly posts. (I don’t know that anyone else needs to find them, but I do. It’s like the index page on my blog.)

When the Weather Is Fine (finished)

Seoul music teacher leaves the city and her unfulfilling job for the countryside, reconnects with adorable highschool classmate. They heal from the past together.

Mentioned in the last post and all other my blog. I said it was feel-good and having finished it, I stand by that. The great thing is, even when what’s happening with the leads isn’t great, there’s always another storyline to balance things out.

It looks so good. I love the fashion, which is almost exclusively thick jumpers and warm coats and gloves.

There’s two readings of the ending, one more positive than the other. But either way the finale is worth watching for Jang Woo’s little speech about happiness and mundane things.

Meow, the Secret Boy (ep18 of 24)

Cat adopted by unwilling new owner discovers he can turn into a human around her.

Started this one last month with hopes of cute romcom but it’s too weird to ship at this point. For me anyway.

It is, however, ridiculously funny. But I can’t watch more than one ep at a time due to the aforementioned weirdness. So I haven’t caught up yet.

Cute second couple, though.

Skate into Love (finished)

Star hockey player is reunited with the girl he hated in primary school at age 18, decides to take revenge.

It becomes more about how to navigate a relationship when you have an entire childhood of history and Olympic dreams. Also meddling parents and manipulative admirers.

Did I fast forward a bit? Yes. It’s 40 episodes after all, and the drama is edited to be a bit slow I think. You can easily watch it at the 1.25x speed. There’s plenty of supporting characters with their own stories, some more interesting than others. But I still found it worth watching.

I love the leads! And they actually grow, individually and as a couple. They both make mistakes and apologize and move on together.

While I’m here, let me mention that there are decent kisses!

Joy of Life (finished)

21st century character is sort of reborn in what looks like ancient china, with memories from his past life intact.

It’s been a long time coming, but I finished it!

By a long time coming I mean I started this drama in... December? Which might as well be a century ago at this point. I mentioned it here in January if you missed that.

46 episodes is a lot for me, especially if the drama is no longer airing. If I don’t watch it as it comes out, I 100% will end up taking up to 6 months to finish it. That’s just my brain.

The drama itself is a delight! Both funny and heartbreaking. Lots of intrigues and politics, but not in a boring way. It definitely keeps you on your toes.

Wan’er being one my faves (I don’t care if some find her plain), I was sad to see her character fade in the background as the drama progressed. The lack of romance from ep35 or so might be why it took so long for me to finish it. I love my romance ok?

Also this is season 1 of at least 2, so the ending is... an interesting and shocking one.

A Piece of Your Mind (finished)

Two people dealing with the loss of loved ones help each other through the darkness. Also there’s artificial intelligence involved.

I thought the fact that there was AI would mean the plot would inevitably end up where it usually does for this genre of kdrama: some evil person or entity trying to acquire the technology through legal or illegal means. Thankfully, that never happens. It’s not that kind of drama but a sweet melo.

Did you know I love Jung Hae In? I have that one post about him where I say exactly that but in more words and I’m always happy when it gets notes. The thing is, I don’t mind that he’s been playing similar characters lately. On an emotional level, his portrayals always work. I can’t look away from his eyes. Especially if he’s about to cry. He plays “overwhelmed with emotion” so well whether it’s anger or sadness or love. Plus, I’m all for kinder and softer male leads.

I know Chae Soo Bin from 3 other dramas and they were all comedy I think. I didn’t know she had the range! It was a good surprise to find that she could play a more poised character. I love her in this.

Is it because I’ve been re-watching One Spring Night but this drama looks so bright! In a good way. I love the light and colours. Especially at sunset. Plus all of the snow in the beginning, and Soon Ho’s plants!!! Also I love how they film through windows and play with reflections.

I’m sad they had to cut 4 episodes but they managed to wrap things up pretty well.

So many great characters. And I love that there’s several very strong non-romantic relationships. Soon Ho and Ha Won for example. As someone who wants to scream anytime I hear “men and women can’t be friends”, I love that these two are best friends. Also the boarding house scenes were great. Especially once Min Jung and the medical student moved in.

Hyena (finished)

How do I describe Hyena?

It’s an unusual love-to-hate-to-love. Two resourceful, rich-people’s lawyers cross paths and well, sparks fly.

It’s not cute and fluffy. They defend the worst people and with questionable means. They have ethics but they’re different from mine.

As I have mentioned here, it was Hee Jae that grabbed my attention. Joo Ji Hoon is a brilliant actor.

The drama is fast-paced and I watched it in like a week.

The King: Eternal Monarch (ep2 of 16)

King with a tragic family history finds the door to a parallel universe.

Technically I’ve watched 2 eps and like 15 min of the 3rd ep.

I’ve decided to give it at least 4 episodes. I still haven’t caught up.

Main appeal for me: Woo Do Hwan. He’s not the lead though so there’s that.

I don’t usually pay much attention to that but since I edit them for this... the posters aren’t great? And none of the ones I’ve found have the standard format so I had to choose between cutting the title and cutting off half of Lee Min Ho’s face.

Love is All (ep4 of 26)

Historical romcom. I kinda didn’t pay attention to ep1 so I’m not super clear on why the male lead is hiding his identity but he is. He’s left the capital to become a county magistrate in a small (?) town. There he meets a romance writer who becomes his adviser.

They fight all the time.

Also she keeps unknowingly declaring her love for him because she knows him by name and has a crush on him, but he’s living under a false identity. So she’s annoying him a lot but also complimenting him all the time and he’s not indifferent.

Fun supporting characters.

Is it kinda cheesy? Yes, but that’s what I typically watch cdramas for.

‘I'm young, the world is wide, and I want to make some memories.’

You sprint along the jetty, boots falling heavily on the rickety surface and bags banging into your hip.

“Hey, wait,” you throw your free hand in the air, waving frantically at the boat that is slowly getting further away, “wait for me, please.”

You contemplate just dropping your luggage right there on the jetty, you need to catch that boat.

It needs to be that boat.

You can feel it. Something special awaits you on the island and that boat is your only chance to get there.

“Wait,” you shout, hope beginning to diminish as the boat starts pulling away faster.

If you miss this boat, you know that there is a whole world of adventures that you will be missing.

It needs to be today. It needs to be that boat.

You’re almost there, almost at the edge of the dock, feet rhythmically pounding as they attempt to get you there in time.

Two kids sit on the bench at the back of the boat, watching you run after it, knowing you aren’t going to make it. They wave at you as they chuckle to one another, enjoying your failure. You stick your tongue out at them as you curse to yourself.

“Damn, I needed to catch that ferry,” you mutter.

There must be another way to get there today.

You bring your hand up and run it through your hair, ideas whirring through your mind.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart, there will be another one tomorrow,” a distinctly English voice croons behind you.

“But I really wanted to catch that one,” you sigh, staring after the ferry.

“What’s so important in Kalokairi?” he asks.

“I don’t know yet,” you smile to yourself thinking of all the possibilities that await, “I’ll find out when I get there.”

You turn around still stuck in your daydream.

“Huh, well do you think you’ll miss this?”

A small chuckle escapes his lips as you look up to the person you’ve been conversing with. You’re greeted with eyes so blue they blend in with the ocean around you, sparkling like the water when the golden sun reflects on its surface. You suck in a small breath, your brain buffering. He raises a sculpted eyebrow as he holds one of your bikini tops in front of him.

Cocking your head to the side, you’re finally able to process words again.

“Hey, that’s mine.” You take a step forward, reaching your hand out.

He smoothes the garment against his chest and grins, looking down at it, "what is it not my colour?"

He starts swaying from side to side, “I think I could pull it off.” He winks before starting to whirl around the dock, keeping the swimming costume close to his chest.

“Hey, give it back,” you playfully demand.

He pauses for a moment and scans you up and down, before continuing to twirl. You drop your bags and lunge for him. Jumping on his back, you try to reach around his arms and grab back your possession, but he manages to swat them away every time.

He is still spinning and you’re starting to get dizzy.

Oh no, gonna be sick, gonna be sick.

It seems he is too as he stops and says, “okay, okay, I give in.”

Thank god.

You jump off his back, taking a moment to reorient yourself, your head feeling heavier than normal. When you do you immediately seize your top back. The guy holds his hands up in submission.

This guy is trouble, that’s for sure. You can never trust a guy with a grin so impish and immediate confidence to match.

With his hands still raised he points one finger to the left, his eyes following the line, “can I have those then?”

There he goes with that mischievous smile again. It’s not cute, definitely not really really cute.

You look to where he is pointing. A selection of your clothes is scattered across the dock.

“Urgh god,” you mumble, a light blush blooming across your cheeks as you scramble to pick them up.

You shove them into your bag as you go. As you go to reach for the last top another hand greets yours, travelling up the tanned skin you reach his face and those eyes. They almost make you short circuit for the second time.

“Here,” he offers you the shirt, “I’m Haz, by the way.”

Hey, this isn't no romcom, buddy.

Cramming the top in your bag and zipping it back up you turn back to Haz, “I’m Y/N.”

“Y/N,” he swirls the name around in his mouth before returning his gaze to you, “I like it, it suits you.”

Hah, not falling for that.

“So, Y/N,” he draws out, letting each syllable roll off his tongue.

“So, Haz,” you mimic.

“Why do you need to get to Kalokairi today?”

“Because I have a dream.”

“And that dream is in Kalokairi?”

He takes a few steps back, leaning on the stern of a boat tied at the jetty.

“I’m almost certain of it,” your mind wonders again, “I can feel it.”

“Hmm.” Haz bites his lips, seemingly mulling over a decision. In a flash, he has jumped onto the boat.

He regally strides across the deck, very deliberately gliding his hand along the railing.

“Shame you missed that boat then,” he teases.

Watching him walk along the boat it suddenly clicks.

“You know what would be great?” You ran your tongue over your teeth.

He stops and grips the rope railings, eyes wide, “what’s that?”

Definitely more trouble than he’s worth.

“Well, if someone I knew already had a boat,” you pause for emphasis, “perhaps a stranger who I just met but would be willing to sail me over to the little island.”

“Huh, now wouldn’t that be a stroke of luck.”

Haz runs his hand through his honey hair, “now I bet this stranger would be young, spontaneous and roguishly handsome.”

You roll your eyes, “he’s probably passable looking,” you gesture towards the boat, “but he has a boat.”

Waggling your eyebrows at him, you await his response.

This guy is going to get on your nerves but it's worth it if it means that you can get to Kalokairi. Anything would be worth it if you could get to Kalokairi.

“Yeah, that would be really great,” he begins.

He leans back, his hands still gripping the railing, stopping him from falling. His shirt tightens around his biceps as they strain under the added pressure, whilst the veins worm their way to the surface and create a pattern across the skin. You can tell he is building up the anticipation with his silence. He is loving every second of this.

The tease.

He releases his grip on the railings.

“Shame this is not my boat.”

Fucking trouble, I knew it. Not to mention a waste of time.

Your mouth falls open, all this flirting wasted. Now you still had no way to the island and you had just wasted your time trying to win this stranger over.

Haz leaps off the boat and reaches you in three elongated strides.

He pouts, “I was just trying to impress the pretty girl.”

“Urgh, I haven’t got time for this, I need to get to Kalokairi.” You push his chest lightly, picking up your bag and making your way back down the jetty.

Five fingers wrap themselves around your wrist, pulling gently, you turn your head, not really interested in anything else Haz has to say.

There is a glint in his eye, “I’m only joking, pretty girl.”

“Y/N,” you grumble.

Haz unfurls his fingers from around your wrist and your arm drops by your side.

“I was joking, this my boat,” he winks, “Y/N.”

You straighten up. “You sure?”

He looks down at your bag and then back up to your face, “well, seems like you don’t have a choice. Come on, I have time to take you to Kalokairi, it only takes a day.”

Is this a good move? He is a stranger. But a stranger with a boat. And you do need a boat. What’s the worse that could happen anyway?

You scan him up and down.

“Kalokairi awaits,” you exclaim, before skipping past him and hauling yourself up onto the boat, dumping your bag at the first opportunity.

“Come on,” you call behind you.

Haz rushes after you, a big smirk spreading over his face.

You sit on the boat, a silence overcoming the two of you, bouncing your leg up and down to keep you busy.

The silence continuing for the next twenty minutes, the only interaction you two share being a glance and a shrug.

Perhaps you won’t have to worry about him causing trouble?

The next five minutes go by and still nothing but nail picking and determinedly staring out at the rushing water.

You hear a huff to your side and Haz states, “well this isn’t going well.”

Does it make it more awkward to mention how awkward it is, or less? You can never tell.

Your expression remains stagnant as you try to figure out where to take this.

“So,” you try, “how often do you take your boat out?”

“Oh no,” Haz puffs, “this is not happening. I have a beautiful girl on my boat and I can’t let that opportunity go to waste.”

You raise an eyebrow.

A smile broadens on his face and he leaps up.

Sidling down next to you, he places a finger under your chin, lifting it to look at him.

“When you were lonely,” he belts out.

What the hell is he doing?

“You needed a man,” he flexes his arm, flashing you a cheeky grin.

“What the fu-" you start before he puts a finger to your lips shushing you.

“Someone to lean on, well I understand,” he continues.

You’re stunned into silence. Is he really singing right now? What’s his motive with this?

“It’s only natural,” he jumps up, solidly landing on the decking and holding one hand close to his heart and pointing the other towards you, “but why did it have to be me?”

“Ahh,” you gasp, mouth agape.

Haz is suddenly filled with all this relentless energy, he swivels on the spot and ducks under the sail. He watches you, waiting for you to get up and join him but all you can do is just keep staring at him incredulously.

He may be an idiot, but you have to admit that you want to jump up and join him.

But you won’t, he doesn’t get you that easily.

When you don’t move, Haz ducks back under the sail and throws himself down next to you, the toothy grin never once leaving his mouth.

“Nights can be empty, nights can be cold.” He yawns and lifts his arm, letting it settle on your shoulder.

“So you were looking for someone to hold.” His hand creeps further around your shoulder and he taps his fingers on your bare skin. The sensation sets your body tingling and brings your attention to the fact his arm is around you.

I said not that easily.

You tap his hand and it drops behind you. Rising to your feet and shaking your head. Even though you're trying so hard not to find this charming.

He holds his hands up in mock submission, “that’s only natural. But why did it have to be me?”

Haz frowns, his eyes widening and sucking you in for a second. You shake your head to escape their trance.

For a moment his energy diminishes, he mutters under his breath, “Ummm, awkward question, but do you not know this song?”

Now it’s your turn to do some teasing.

“I do,” you answer, your tongue resting on your incisors.

He closes one eye in concentration, trying to work out what you are saying.

Slowly he suggests, “so, you just don’t feel like singing?”

The faintest splotches of pink start to appear on Haz’s face as he waits for your reply.

I’ve let him suffer enough now. Besides who doesn’t love a bit of Abba.

You stare into his eyes for several seconds before flashing your own. You reach behind and pick up a sun-bleached captain’s hat, putting it on jauntily.

“I was so lonesome, I was blue,” you sing, holding one hand against your chest and wiping away pretend tears with the other.

Haz’s face lights up, now that you are in on the game.

“I couldn’t help it, it had to be you and I,” you sing.

Haz reaches forward and grabs the hat from you. He breaks out into laughter, his tongue held in between his teeth as his body rocks. Lines appear around his mouth and under his eyes, making his face looked lived in.

Cute.

“Always thought you knew the reason why,” he winks and starts walking towards you. You throw up your hand to keep him at bay.

Walking backwards, you sing, “I only wanted a little love affair.”

His eyebrows raise at that and he brings your hand into his chest, still walking towards you. You continue to walk backwards.

“Now I can see you are beginning to care,” Haz lulls.

You jump up onto the raised decking, looking down at him, “but baby, believe me. It’s better to forget me.”

Catching both your breath for a moment, you look each other over, ending at each other’s eyes simultaneously. Your heart flutters somewhat as you look into those magical eyes. Maybe it wasn’t the island itself that promised magic, perhaps it was the journey there.

“Men are toys in the game that you play,” Haz sings as you pull him up to meet you, breathing out the last few words.

His hands rest on your waist and one corner of his mouth curls up, “when you get tired, you throw them away. That’s only natural.”

You groan, trying to wriggle free, but his hands only get tighter.

“But why did it have to be me?” Haz dips you, one of your hand falls back behind your head and grazes the wooden floor. You let out a little scream that morphs into a giggle when you see the innocent look plastered all over Haz’s face. With a little too much force he brings you back up, unbalancing you and you fall against him. When you look up he is looking far too smug, so you push away from him.

Trailing your fingers along the bottom of the sail, you walk slowly in front of him.

“Falling in love with a woman like you,” he walks behind you, “happens so quickly, there’s nothing to do.”

You stop, holding onto the sail and popping your hip. Haz falls to his knees and brings his hands up around your bum, a growl escaping his lips.

“It’s only natural. But why did it have to be me?” you trill.

Laughter warms your body and you throw your head back, enjoying yourself far too much.

In unison, you sing, “I was so lonesome.”

Haz gets to his feet and chases you under the sail, but he slips and slides off the raised decking. This time the laughter doesn’t just warm you, it shakes your entire body. He rolls onto his back, defeated, “I was blue.”

You can’t catch a breath in between your guffawing. Your eyes are starting to water. You just manage to exhale, “I couldn’t help it,” breaking off before you can finish the lyric.

Haz catches it immediately, “it had to be you and I. Always thought you knew the reason why.”

He flips over onto his knees and begins crawling towards you.

“I only wanted a little love affair.”

He pushes himself to his feet, right in front of you, his eyes almost level with your own. He leaves barely an inch between you both and you can feel his shaky breath against the skin of your cheek. Your mouth is slightly ajar.

What was I saying about him before? He's trouble. Hmm, maybe trouble is good.

You suck in a breath, “now I can see,” Haz harmonises, “you are beginning to care. But baby, believe me. It’s better to forget me.”

Both your chests rise up and down at a rapid rate as you try to catch your breath and probably regain your composure. Haz starts to lean in a little, breath out, breath in, lean in a little more, breath out, until the tip of his nose is just grazing yours.

I think it’s too early for trouble yet.

“I think it’s too early for trouble,” you whisper.

“Huh, sweetheart?” he asks.

“Nothing.” Shaking your head, you walk towards the stairs down to the cabin, “where am I sleeping?”

Haz opens his mouth to speak, a glint in his eye.

You blurt out, “and don’t say with you.”

“We’ll see about that,” he purrs.

“Huh?”

“Nothing, sweetheart.”

You roll over in bed, away from the white moonlight that seeps in through the porthole. Sighing, you flip on your stomach, then to your other side, then to your back, unable to get comfortable on the unfamiliar bed. The blanket that you have drawn around you itches and you’re sharing your bed with an abundance of Haz’s stuff. You’ve never been good at sleeping away from your bed but tonight you just can’t seem to get any rest at all, not even a measly five minutes.

You sigh out in frustration.

Bet Haz is sleeping like a baby. Dickhead.

Not wanting to wake him you lay still, looking up at the ceiling. The moonlight is bouncing around the room reflecting off the water in your glass, causing shimmery waves above you. You watch them roll across the ceiling, trying to find peace in them. The tranquillity you require to sleep. They don’t help. You thrash your legs out in front of you, wiggling on your bed, trying to shake off all the restless energy.

Click.

You freeze, unable to identify the sound. The door behind you slides open and Haz steps out, yawning. You quickly snap one eye shut but hold the other one open curious about what your sailing companion is up to in the middle of the night, something telling you that you should pretend to be asleep. Until he walks past your bed.

“Oh my god, what are you doing?” You throw your hands up to cover your eyes whilst trying to turn your head away from the very naked boy in front of you.

"Ahh," Haz screams. He whips around towards the voice, squinting to try to make you out in the dark cabin.

You risk peeking through your eyes and instantly regret it.

“Cover it up,” you shout.

For a second Haz seems confused, then he looks down and realises his lack of clothes.

“Fuck,” he exclaims, bringing his hand down to protect his modesty.

He scratches the back of his head, sleep still fogging his brain.

“Sorry, I thought you were asleep,” he apologises.

“I couldn’t sleep.”

The silence that follows, although only a few seconds feels like a lifetime. If this were a film, you would be able to hear crickets.

“You can take your hands down now,” he says.

“Hmm, I would feel safer if you were wearing this,” you move your hand across your bed feeling for your blanket. When you get a firm grip of it, you throw it in his direction.

A couple more painfully awkward seconds pass.

“Alright, you can look now,” Haz repeats.

Tentatively you uncover your face, barely opening your eyes in case you are greeted with a less than welcome site again.

Haz has wrapped the blanket around his hips, where it is hanging dangerously loose. He catches you staring and pulls it slightly tighter. Even in this low light, you can see the definition of his abs, the strong curve of his biceps. The blanket is slung low enough for you to see the strong v formation that almost looks like an arrow pointing down towards…

Oh fuck, you weren’t supposed to find him hot.

Lucky it’s dark so he can’t see how hot and bothered you’re becoming.

“You alright, sweetheart?” he asks, one eyebrow raised.

You nod in response.

“Huh,” he smirks, “liking what you see?”

Oh great, he’s found his confidence again, didn’t take long.

“Okay, I’m going back to sleep.”

You roll onto your side, curling up into a small ball. A tiny chill makes its way down your spine as you really notice the absence of the blanket.

“Wait,” Haz says, his voice becoming quieter, a softness creeping in.

Maybe that’s why you decided to reply.

“What?” you grumble.

“If neither of us can sleep, why don’t we stay up together,” he trails off at the end.

You move so you are looking at him, “and what exactly do you think we’ll be doing together.”

“Just talking.”

That took you back, maybe his mind wasn't always as depraved as you thought. You furrow your brow, wondering what his intentions are with this. This boy always seems to have an ulterior motive. But you can’t sleep and it would be nice to have someone to pass the time with and if he tries anything, well then, you’ll just throw him out.

“Sure,” you concede.

Haz simply radiates warmth after this and clambers onto your bed, keeping a respectful distance.

“So, Y/N, what are you really looking for in Kalokairi?”

Haz is wild and such a funny guy, one thing led to another and …

The boat bobs along the water unevenly, tiny waves lapping at its edges as it draws into the dock.

In front of you lies Kalokairi, you can’t believe you’ve finally made it. You were ready to make some memories. Even the shore felt special, the pale sand interspersed with an assortment of beautiful shells, small clusters of grains being brushed around by the light breeze. The sun reflected off the water, making it twinkle. Something you had only seen in perfect pictures. Past the beach was a stone covered path that seemed to wrap itself round and round the island. Intensely green trees carved its way.

It was like a postcard. It didn’t seem real.

As soon as the boat knocks against the wooden planks of the dock you scramble up and leap from it. Running down to the end and sinking your feet in the sand, a coolness spread through your toes as the sand settles between them. You heard heavy breaths behind you, so you spin around.

“Don’t forget these, sweetheart.” Haz held out your bags, his chest rising and falling with his heavy breaths.

“Thanks,” you beam.

You look back to the island, “it’s wonderful, isn’t it.”

“Mmm, sure is,” Haz rests a hand on your shoulder, “look are sure you’re going to be alright?”

“Yes, yes, stop worrying, I’ll be fine.”

You lean up and kiss his cheek, “thank you again for taking me here.”

You think you see him bite the inside of his cheek.

“It’s no problem, really,” he takes a step back, nodding his head solidly, “right, well, I’ll be back in a couple of weeks to check on you, make sure you haven’t gotten into too much trouble.”

“I don’t think it’s me you should worry about getting into trouble,” you chide.

Walking backwards from Haz, you wave at him and he gets the message. He makes his way back to the boat and clambers aboard, untying it from the dock.

“See you soon, Y/N” he shouts.

You blow him a kiss, then turn back to face the beach.

You’ve got a whole island to explore.
