A beautifully claustrophobic love letter to a wife, the sea, the unknown πΎ There are so many readers who will love it: β’ those who are into books about people coming back from other places changed β’ those who love βThe Metamorphosisβ (which I, personally, dislike but love all the books inspired by that monster) β’ those who are into Cthulhu because donβt we all think about Cthulhu while reading about underwater adventures π€(why isnβt there the emoji of it yet??? π₯²) β’ those who got that tingling sensation while reading about confined spaces β’ those who love books about love (which makes all of us π) #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #metamorphosis #britishliterature #britishauthor #juliaarmfield #ourwivesunderthesea #horror #thriller (at Pirita beach, Tallin Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgtLrCRo9Wb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I received an advanced reader copy of Our Wives Under the Sea from Flatiron Books via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield is a story about the love, marriage and surviving lifeβs ups and downs. Leah has recently returned from a failed deep-sea mission. Miri, Leahβs wife, is happy to finally have Leah back home but has noticed that Leah is different. Miri canβt get Leah to open up about what happened while she was stranded on the ocean floor, but Miri thinks Leah may have unknowingly brought something back with her. This was an easy to read, unique story thatβs perfect for sci-fi fans. Our Wives Under the Sea is available today, July 12, 2022. The film was about freediving and I think that it was French. In my mind, the scene takes place in a hotel bedroom. On the bed, one of the divers is suffering with the bends; on land he is haunted by the ocean. In a nightmare, hallucination, or visual metaphor for madness, the room fills with water. It is a suffocating, horrifically beautiful scene. It has the perfectly breath-halting oxymoronic quality created when horror and beauty serenely stand hand in silent hand. As I say, I saw the film only once and the scene I describe is as it remains in my mind. I am not sure I want to risk the enduring impression with the reality of a rewatch... π Instead, I celebrate in this same atmosphere created elsewhere. In adulthood I first found it in 'The Underwater Welder' by @jefflemire - a stunning graphic novel that I recommend highly. I found it next in @djdaisyjohnson's weird, watery tales of the 'Fen' - again I recommend, highly. π @my.dark.library recently tagged me to share my favourite first lines in fiction. I love the oppressive opening introduction to house as character in 'The Haunting of Hill House', 'Rebecca' and 'The Fall of the House of Usher'. Today, with the coastline close, I strayed only far enough from home to collect this highly anticipated read from the library. I am only two chapters in, but I feel that feeling rising in me - that same suffocating, drowning delight. According to our King @florence herself, 'Our Wives Under the Sea' promises to float "fluidly between horror story and love story, the gorgeous and the grotesque." What better book than @juliaarmfield to dive into this #prideπ ? β Have you read Our Wives? Where is your wife? βWhen something bad is actually happening, itβs easy to underreact, because part of you is wired to assume it isnβt real. When you stop underreacting, the horror of unique because it is, unfortunately, endless.β β¨πβ¨πβ¨ Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield is a queer contemporary literary horror novel, following two wives before and after one of them returns to the surface. The novel is told switching between two different points of view, and semi backyards, and I absolutely loved it as it kept me hooked right from the very start. The way this book was written was absolutely beautiful with its lush and lyrical imagery. The paragraphs, while long, flowed naturally and it was clear that the author had done their research, and the way that the oceanography was tied into the overall story added so much into the horror aspect of the novel. This book was a such a slow building horror, and over the course of the novel I could feel myself getting sucked in deeper until it was quite literally all that I could focus on. After I finished the novel, I couldnβt not stop thinking about this book or the way that it made me feel. I loved that both Leahβs and Miriβs voices and experiences were told throughout the novel, as they each contributed to the thought provoking issues that arose while Leah was under the sea and Miri was on land. Each faced separate issues that contributed to the overarching plot, and it was so beautifully woven together. Gorgeously tension raising and at times so tender, this book is a must read for fans of literary horror. β¨πβ¨πβ¨ Our Wives Under The Sea is book 98 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #ourwivesunderthesea #juliaarmfield #horrornovel #creepynovels #shorthorrornovels https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl3lrr8LBq9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and hope youβve had or are having a good Monday. I canβt quite believe itβs May, how quick is this year going?! Time for a book haul. Two of these books are @illumicrate special editions, Gallant and The Atlas Six. Iβm really enjoying my subscription with Illumicrate, the books are just gorgeous! π Gallant will be my second book by V.E. Schwab, after thoroughly enjoying The Invisible Life Of Addie LaRue. This is quite a slim little book and Iβm looking forward to buddy reading it with @keeperofpages Speaking of buddy reads with Janel, Iβm currently reading The Atlas Six with her and relishing my escape from real life into a magical fantasy world. Finally we have Our Wives Under The Sea. Look at that cover! I couldnβt resist it. Itβs a story of falling in love, loss, grief and what life there is in the deep, deep sea. Iβd love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Letβs have a chat in the comments! I've been thinking a lot about what you said a while ago about uk publishing twitter being really grim & terf-y bc it IS and I'm sorry you have to wade through that. I think there's a much less shit younger cohort of authors and people who work in the book world tho, a lot of whom are gay, so it partly feels generational. Accounts like mikclements, JuliaArmfield, Kiran_MH are real hope spots. I know you like to keep work stuff/tumblr stuff separate so don't feel the need to reply to this xx
Oh, dear anon, thank you so much for this π§‘

Happy Sunday, friends! What's everyone up to today? Sundays are usually my cleaning days, but I did tons of housework yesterday and so now I'm looking forward to a relaxed Sunday for a change. Right now I'm enjoying the brief part of the day before it gets unbearably hot and reading out on the patio. Current read: Salt Slow, by Julia Armfield. Coming October 2019. Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield goes back and forth between the present urban setting where Leah lives with her wife, Miri, and flashbacks of the submarine in which Leah and her crew sink to the bottom of the ocean. It is interesting to learn about some of the creatures that survive at the bottom of the ocean. Leah and the crew may have come into contact with one of these rareβ¦
