Jukebox January: Day 22
Day 22: Songs starting with V
This song made me listen to Olivia Rodrigo more.
HERÄÄ!!!
Makes me wanna dance.
Deserved better on Eurovision.
I love any song that Hayley features.
This one gives me chills every time.
There was a time I listened to it a lot. I was obsessed with the music video with Noel Fielding as Vlad.

Glass Houses by Bad Omens - i want to steal noah sebastian's voice so bad, man i wish i could scream like that
GRINDR MAYHEM (feat. BESS) by Antti Tuisku - listen... i have watched that one tiktok edit that käärijä reposted too many times and this just slaps
Gola by Joker Out - idk why i took a bit longer to warm up to gola, but now every time i hear the first notes i have to smile and singing along to it live is just amazing

Jukebox January: Day 1
So I saw this prompt game from @esskuesli and considering that one of my favorite things to do in the world is gush about music, I thought it'd be fun to do it! I have a feeling that this is going to heavily lean on artists I listen to a lot and know their entire back catalog, but I want to share music that's really me.
Day 1 is songs starting with A. Let's go!
Aijā - Sudden Lights
The song that Europe did dirty. I need to drag everyone who didn't vote for it in front of sad Andrejs and tell them to apologize. I love, love, love how when you listen to Sudden Lights you can tell they started in music school together, because the 5/4 to 6/4 transition in this song is everything. 5/4 is a fave time signature of mine because it's got this unsettling feeling, you can make it feel like you skipped a beat or added one, while any time signature in 3 has this gentle, rocking feeling to it. So switching from the verses where he's singing about how he doesn't believe in the beautiful world anymore, to the chorus where he's telling you not to cry, and then the lullaby-inspired ending--this song is so good from so many perspectives. Go listen to Sudden Lights. Do it. Now.
A sem ti povedal - Joker Out
The buildup of this song is so good, one of my favorite things in the whole world is songs that start out minimal and build to a big ending. I love this one because it doesn't have the drop between verses and chorus, it keeps building through the song, starting with just guitar and then adding in the whole band and then adding more and more layers of guitar and then finally another layer of vocals, so good in every way! Plus I love the little bit of Spanish guitar in it, as someone who had a brief phase of trying to be a classical guitarist as a teenager.
Absinthe - I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME
Every iDKHOW song has such a fucking good groove and I think this is exactly what you get when your frontman (and only man, now, I guess) is a bassist. Why this one specifically? It's not the point of the song, I know, but as someone who was really, really into Les Mis as a teen, I love a good mention of absinthe.
Anna Sun - Walk the Moon
This one's here, of course, because it's about me. 😉 I actually love the lyrics even if they didn't mention my name: "We got no money but we got heart/We're gonna rattle this ghost town" is such a lovely line!
Always You - Depeche Mode
This one's from their newest album, which is such a melancholy yet beautiful album, some very dark moments (the album has a lot about the pandemic, war, and death of Andy Fletcher) and yet these moments of love and hope, and this one is all about that love. Depeche Mode are the absolute best at creating this all-encompassing atmosphere with their music, the emotions are layered into every note, and so I feel it in my heart that "There's always you/The light that leads me from the darkness", which is especially powerful coming after People Are Good if you listen to the album in order (I love to listen to albums in the order intended, because there's artistic intention to that too).
For some reason A is a really hard letter, but B... let's just say tomorrow will be a whole bunch of my absolute favorites of all time. Like, it'll probably get so long I have to put it under a cut. (I don't have an explanation for this.)

So I just got back from watching Post Modern Jukebox and OMGHOLYSHITAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
It was
AMAZING
skin clear, crops watered, vibes cleansed, soul thriving!
The tap dancer lead a rendition of the Star Wars theme and the Cantina song, which was really fun, but before that he also did the Super Mario songs and...
when he came out to do it, before he did, he got down on the ground so he could speak into the microphone that was set on the floor to pick up the sound of his tap shoes, and he was telling us-
He'd quit his job as a plumber to come do this gig, came to this the city to find his princess, but when he got here he was told, his princess was in another castle.
My sister and I laughed, but everyone else was going "awww" the sad noise "awww" and I'm- I don't know if we were supposed to play into it and go "awww" as well, or if we were the only ones in the audience who got the reference and everyone else thinks we're horrible people.
I hope it's the first one.
The outfits were so gorgeous, men and women both!
I was really worried that my energy would flag only a few songs in, because my social energy isn't great, but the performers were amazing, they weren't just playing the music they were having fun on stage.
Their energy was amazing and it was really easy because of that for me to keep my own energy up. I got up and danced in the aisles at one point~
Before the last song before intermission the... is it spelled emcee? He was our host but he was also a singer, he asked us for a favour.
14 Australian beers.
he was joking, he wanted us to do finger snaps on the 2 and 4 count during the song, but one woman actually bought the performers and stage crew beers during intermission.
The whole evening was just really good.
Live music in a theatre, it's been so long and it was so good to experience that again.

The diner’s signature dish: Fresh-baked soft pretzel knots with sweet Georgia peach jam, topped with bitter trauma. Recipe includes a dash of pining, a sprinkle of faith, and a generous heap of healing love.
Linecook!Eddie x Waitress!Reader. 60s Diner. Slow Burn.
The ground is frozen solid when you arrive in Hawkins in January 1989. Ice fills the deep gouges in the earth that remain nearly three years after the earthquake that rocked this quaint town, forcing many from their homes. The ones who stayed are still healing - scarred just like the earth, inside and out.
You join them as the sky melts to the black of night, pulling up to the dilapidated trailer park in a stolen car. You have nothing to your name but a smattering of pawn-shop proceeds, a nipped cashbox, what toiletries you can carry in both hands, and two trash bags full of tailored dresses.
You’d chosen Hawkins, Indiana because it’s the last place he’d ever expect you to go.
You’d chosen Hawkins, Indiana, and Lord, thank you, because it saved your life.

This magical time of which I’ve spoken with great fondness over the years didn’t get off to the best start. Def Leppard guitarist Steve Clark died on January 8 from a lethal mix of alcohol and prescription drugs at the young age of 30, and three people were crushed to death during an AC/DC concert in Salt Lake City just 10 days later. But things did improve.
Along with the above-mentioned classics, an overabundance of bangers were released throughout ’91, not least including Fly Me Courageous by Drivin N Cryin, 1916 by Motörhead, Doubt by Jesus Jones, Innuendo by Queen (Freddie Mercury’s farewell), The White Room by The KLF, Heart in Motion by Amy Grant (laugh if you want), Out of Time by R.E.M., Arise by Sepultura, Mama Said by Lenny Kravitz, Temple of the Dog’s only album (featuring members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden), Power of Love by Luther Vandross, Schubert Dip by EMF, De La Soul Is Dead by De La Soul, Don't Rock the Jukebox by Alan Jackson, Spellbound by Paula Abdul (laugh if you want), Gish by The Smashing Pumpkins, Slave to the Grind by Skid Row, Superstition by Siouxsie and the Banshees, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge by Van Halen, Into the Great Wide Open by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience by P.M. Dawn, Brand New Man by Brooks & Dunn, Cypress Hill’s eponymous debut, Psychotic Supper by Tesla, Ropin' the Wind by Garth Brooks, No More Tears by Ozzy Osbourne, Emotions by Mariah Carey, Ceremony by The Cult, The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest, Diamonds and Pearls by Prince & The New Power Generation, Whenever We Wanted by John Mellencamp, Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, Achtung Baby by U2, and Dangerous by Michael Jackson.
And I probably left some out.

George Harrison, backstage in Philadelphia, PA, on August 16, 1966; photo by Bob Bonis.
“[George showed us] his music room, which has one wall covered with the famous Harrison guitars, his collection of Indian instruments and a small jukebox standing just by the door. I looked at the titles on the jukebox and there were very few Beatle songs amongst them. The Beach Boys, Mamas and Papas, Lovin’ Spoonful, the Stones were all well represented.” - The Beatles Monthly, January 1967
“George Harrison’s Fab Forty… George — like all the Beatles, incidentally — has his own juke box at his Esher home. It’s in his ‘den.’ Along with tape recorder, radio and record player. […] But back to the juke box. It’s a KB. Maybe you saw it in the film ‘Help’? Says George: ‘It’s so much easier to have all my favorite records on the juke box at once. It saves me going through piles of records to find the ones I want. Then when I get sick of them, I just throw them out and put some new ones in.” - Tony Hall, Record Mirror, January 1, 1966
George’s Top Ten… 1 “Harlem Shuffle” — Bob and Earl 2 “Good Things Come To Those Who Wait” — Chuck Jackson 3 “Be My Lady”/“Red Beans and Rice” — Booker T and the MGs 4 “Please Crawl Out Your Window” — Bob Dylan 5 “Baby, You’re My Everything” — Little Jerry Williams 6 “Back Street” — Edwin Starr 7 “Work, Work, Work” — Lee Dorsey 8 “The Little Girl I Once Knew” — The Beach Boys 9 “My Girl Has Gone” — The Miracles 10 “I Don’t Know What You’ve Got /But It’s Got Me)” — Little Richard (“[P]arts one and two — the second is George’s favorite.”)
The rest… 11 “I Can’t Turn You Loose” — Otis Redding 12 “My Girl” — Otis Redding 13 “I Believe I’ll Love On” — Jackie Wilson 14 “Plum Nellie” — Booker T and the MGs 15 “Everything Is Gonna Be Alright” — Willie Mitchell 16 “A Sweet Woman Like You” — Joe Tex 17 “Something About You” — The Four Tops 18 “I Got You” — James Brown 19 “Ain’t That Peculiar” — Marvin Gaye 20 “Turn, Turn, Turn” — The Byrds 21 “See Saw” — Don Covay 22 “I’m Comin’ Through” — Sounds Incorporated 23 “Don’t Fight It” — Wilson Pickett 24 “Bootleg” — Booker T and the MGs 25 “I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore” — The Young Rascals 26 “Respect” — Otis Redding 27 “Try Me”/“Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” — James Brown (“instrumentals”) 28 “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” — Otis Redding 29 “All Or Nothing” — Patty Labelle and her Belles 30 “Pretty Little Baby” — Marvin Gaye 31 “Oowee Baby, I Love You” — Fred Hughes 32 “The Tracks of My Tears” — The Miracles 33 “Yum Yum” — Joe Tex 34 “Agent 00 Soul” — Edwin Starr 35 “Money” — Barrett Strong 36 “Some Other Guy” — Ritchie Barrett (“George’s ‘Revived 45’ list — he’s dug these since they first came out.”) 37 “It Wasn’t Me” — Chuck Berry 38 “Mohair Sam” — Charlie Rich 39 “Let Him Run Wild” — The Beach Boys 40 “Do You Believe In Magic” — The Lovin’ Spoonful
“George really knows his records. It’s always a pleasure to talk to him about them.” - Tony Hall, Record Mirror, January 1, 1966 (x)

Jukebox January: Day 21
Day 21: Songs starting with U
There was the time I was obsessed with this album, including this song.
Aka Tokyo ghoul opening song, reminds me of the good times I had Tokyo ghoul brainrot.
Ukrainian entry for Eurovision. This song deserved to be higher in the contest.
I also love the original by Queen and David Bowie, but I feel that not many people know about this cover, and it slaps!
Perfect song if you feel a little melancholic.

Jukebox January: Day 12
the original post tag of all my posts
Laternas - Sudden Lights
"Mēs būsim laternas vistumšākajā naktī" is the line in this song that makes me feel so warm, so comforted, so bright, so hopeful. Of all Sudden Lights songs this is the one that most recalls why they chose their name, which is to bring light through music, if I remember the interview right. This song means so much to me, a reminder of light and warmth in the darkest times. I also suggest listening to the live version from their Zaļais teātris live album, it's even better live, when everyone is singing together and Kārlis can go wild on the guitar solo.
Legendid Oma Loos - Jaagup Tuisk
Another one I discovered from a Eurovision fan contest and absolutely fell in love with. A couple years ago, I used to listen to this every day on the way to work to give myself energy for the day. It's perfect for that!
Loyal Like Sid and Nancy - Foster the People
Okay, now this takes a darker turn, but this song is musically amazing and politically relevant. I love the contrast between the different sections, and the rap-style vocals, so many genres here and despite the differences it all flows together. The references to a ton of famous people and events are perfect, some as metaphors and some as very literal societal problems, connecting all of it together.
Lean On - Major Lazer, DJ Snake, MØ
This is not the kind of music I normally listen to, but it's here because I remember it being a super popular song in the fall of 2015, which was my first semester of college, and whenever I hear it I'm immediately transported back to that, where everything was new and exciting and somewhat overwhelming and didn't even seem entirely real at the time because it was a big transition in my life. So, for all those memories that come with it, I have to include it in my list.
Laura Palmer - Bastille
It's hard to count how many times in my life I've listened to Bastille's first album. So many good songs! This remains a favorite because I feel like the music reflects the lyrics so well, it really gives me a sense of running.

Either "Surprise Hug" or "Broken" with the Bradshaw's! I hope you're having a great January! :)
I know it’s no longer January, but I have a few more January OTP Prompts left that I want to try to get done!
I hope you had a wonderful January, love! I tried to include both prompts in this one, and I set it in the early days of the Bradshaws’ relationship, when they just started dating ☺️
There was rarely a time when The Hard Deck wasn’t packed with eager patrons, but today felt especially crazy. Since you and Penny had opened up the bar earlier that afternoon, you hadn’t had a single moment to yourself. Between running drinks to all the tables and hurrying food orders to and from the kitchen, your feet were aching by the time the sun finally set. And your shift wasn’t over for hours yet.
Leaning against the bar, waiting for Jimmy to finish pouring the drinks for one of the tables you were waiting on in the back, you leaned against the polished wood and let out a heavy sigh, wiping a tired hand down your face.
“How you doing, sweetie?” Penny’s motherly voice suddenly filled your ears, a comforting hand coming to rest on your back as she stepped up beside you.
“Oh, I’m alright,” you told her, trying to perk yourself up immediately. Penny was such a wonderful boss and friend, and you were happy to see her business thriving, so you didn’t want to let on how exhausted you were and have her worrying about you. Not when she had so many other things to concern herself with.
“You look dead on your feet, hon,” she laughed, her blue-green eyes sparkling with amusement. “Why don’t you take a break?”
“No, no, I’m okay. Really,” you insisted, shaking your head. “I have a few tables who are still waiting on their drinks, so I want to get those over to them.” At Penny’s pointed look, you smiled sheepishly and added, “After that, I’ll take a little break.”
Penny grinned in response, nodding in approval. “Where are Rooster and the others? I figured they’d be here tonight,” she said, brushing her dark hair out of her face.
“They had a special training today, so I’m not sure if they’re going to make it tonight. They’re probably even more dead on their feet than we are,” you laughed, smiling appreciatively when Jimmy set a cluster of beers down on your tray.
“Hmm, in that case, I’m sure Rooster’s going to be very mad at me that I’m making you work the late shift instead of sending you home to take care of him,” she teased with a wink.
Your cheeks grew warm at her words and you fidgeted with the tray in your hands. You and Bradley had only been dating for a couple months, but apparently it was evident to everyone how head over heels you were for him. “I should go drop off these drinks,” you stammered, not missing Penny’s knowing grin as you moved past her.
On your return to the bar, a customer suddenly grabbed your attention, waving her hand in the air. “Uh, you work here, right? Can you help us? I think the jukebox is broken,” she explained, indicating the vintage jukebox that was a central amenity in The Hard Deck.
“Oh, let me take a look,” you nodded, frowning in concern. You hoped nothing was wrong. You didn’t want to stress Penny out.
It looked, however, like you might have to. No matter how many times you tried to plug and unplug the jukebox, fiddling with quarters and pressing various buttons, nothing seemed to want to play. Your frown deepened as your concern grew, and you smacked your palms against the machine in frustration.
“Now what did that jukebox ever do to you, honey?” a deep voice hummed in your ear, the familiar tickle of your boyfriend’s mustache brushing against your skin as Bradley threw his arms around you from behind in a surprise hug.
“Bradley!” you gasped in shock, spinning around in his embrace so that you could throw your arms around him. But before you could try to defend your acts of violence against the jukebox, he was silencing you with a kiss, his fingers burying themselves in your hair as he held you close.
“What are you doing here?” you laughed when the two of you finally broke apart. “I thought you’d be home and in bed after that training today.”
Bradley shrugged nonchalantly, a grin splitting his face as he gazed down at you. “I couldn’t go home without seeing my best girl,” he murmured, brushing another kiss against your lips.
You still got butterflies whenever he called you that.
“So what seems to be the problem, honey?” he asked, resting his hands on your hips as he gazed behind you at the finicky jukebox.
“I don’t know. The jukebox is broken or something. No matter what I do, it doesn’t want to play,” you sighed. “But I hate to bother Penny about it. She has so many other things going on right now.”
“Sounds like you’re in need of some musical assistance, baby,” Bradley smirked, waggling his eyebrows mischievously.
You grinned in return, resting a hand on his chest. “I am, as a matter of fact. Know anyone?”
“I might know a guy,” he nodded, winking at you. “Just show me the way to the nearest piano,” he told you with a laugh.
Giggling, you took his hand and led him through the crowd to the piano where he’d first caught your eye months ago. “My hero.”

Hooray for Captain Underpants: The Unnecessarily In-Depth Writeup
Ages ago, Pilkey.com entered its golden era... the era of Flash content! From about 2003 to 2006, the site was blessed with a new layout, a jukebox, music videos, a LOT of games, and a banner adorned with different characters whenever you refreshed the page! The last thing doesn’t load in the Wayback Machine but trust me it was cool
Most of this stuff has thankfully been preserved, from YouTube reposts early on to those sites with hundreds of stolen games, to archivists scrambling just before Flash died in 2020. One of the early migrators, and the possibly the site’s star attraction, was a simple song with an accompanying animation.
Before George and Harold asked what could possibly go wrong... before Weird Al helped make Dav’s decade... before the Koji Matsumoto songs that I never listened to as a kid because the thumbnails scared me... only one song could encapsulate what these books stood for. Subsequently, only one video could provide an extended glimpse of Pilkey’s wacky world, in full motion and full color.
I’m talking, of course, about Hooray for Captain Underpants.
In this post, I’ll be covering everything to be gleaned about its production and discussing its potential impact on future CU adaptations. Why? Because the Movie won this poll by exactly 1 point! @bestanimatedmovie let me know if you’d like me to stop interfering in your tournament lol.
————————————————————
According to the site’s New Stuff page, both the song and video were added on January 5th, 2005. The Free Music page lists its copyright date as 2004, however. It seems the song was created first, then held back until the accompanying video was ready a year later.
Speaking of copyright, I'd like to shine a spotlight on everyone who contributed to this gift to humanity! First, the song:
Tumblr media
Produced, Written and Performed by Josh Katz.
This guy’s perpetual voice-crack and rap-adjacent stylings make up most of the Extra-Crunchy CD O’ Fun. Outside of that, he’s better known as Rappy McRapperson, a tongue-in-cheek “gangster” act active from 1999 to 2017. I won’t be linking to his music since it's all rather... off-color; look them up at your own risk. I’m not sure how Dav found the guy and now I’m afraid to ask
Beat by Ben Petty.
Petty seems to have contributed music (and his garage) to the Rappy act. The only info I can find on him is tied to Rappy, so again, no links.
Children's Chorus: Mrs. Dean's Music Class.
Imagine having been in this class, your youthful voice immortalized for the ages! Where are these students now, I wonder? If only one of them spoke about it in a random subreddit or something...
Additional Vocals: Elizabeth Dean.
Besides the slim chance of one of her students having the same last name, this was probably the music teacher. I have an inkling on what “role” she plays in the song, but that’s for later.
The video lists two more parties:

Animation by Wetland Animation
Googling this name only supplies animations of wetlands, but I might have found them under a different name. At the bottom of the home page, the site’s redesign is credited to both Dav and an “Eyeland Studio”. There’s an archive of their site from around the same timeframe, and whaddya know!
Tumblr media
Directed by Scott Hamlin
Tumblr media
This guy is the first (and only) name on Eyeland’s Contacts page! Well, not specifically Eyeland’s—apparently that’s just one of three branches of a bigger subsidiary named Games In A Flash? But this is an infodump about Captain Underpants, not the Flash industry, so
————————————————————
On to the actual song and video! I’ll be using this 4K remaster for reference. (And it’s a stellar remaster, might I add—judging from ancient videos of the original, every single asset and animation error is still intact!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first few shots include two villains getting inconvenienced in amusing ways—a bold directing decision, I must say. More seriously, I’d like to point out Prof. Poopypants’s color scheme here. It actually lines up with the two (yes, two) he has on the cover of Book 4!
He wears a muted blue suit on the front cover (at least in early editions) and a purple one on the back cover. Here, he’s wearing the blue suit and the frames of his glasses are purple. Coincidence? Yeah, probably, but it’s cool to know he had a two-outfit thing going on way before the Movie.
First off, nobody walks like this. Second off, what kind of school has searing mint green walls? Sorry, it’s just... not the color I had in mind for Jerome Horwitz lol. Anyway, here come the lyrics!
[GEORGE] Uh-oh.
[HAROLD] Here we go again!
Ah, the classic lines! Not much to say here, but keep the Boys’ voices in mind.
Tumblr media
Wedgie Woman has the smoothest animation in the whole video for some reason. (The perks of being a girlboss, I guess?) Her scene is a highly kinetic bit of slapstick, too—it makes me wish I knew how to make good GIFs.
Tumblr media
Meet George and Harold! They pull pranks and stuff! They're cool (COOL!) And they're mischievous!
Yes they are 💙 Also lol at “Gym teachers smell like stinky toilets”—I wonder what the sign said earlier.
Tumblr media
Krupp has a skin-colored line floating over his arm, and the walls drift to the left at the end of this shot. But also, Harold’s hair does a funny little bounce when they notice Krupp! Plusses and minuses, I guess?
Meet Mr. Krupp! He's not nice, he's mean! That was, until the day  he saw a Hypno-Ring!
... 🎵 and now you know the plot! 🎵
[CHORUS] [x2] Underpants, underpants, I like Captain Underpants! Underpants, underpants, Hooray for Captain Underpants!
The phrase “hooray for Captain Underpants” showed up often in the earlier books, usually in the Boys’ comics.
Tumblr media
The syllables of “underpants” snap into place as the chorus sings them—almost like waistbands! Also, Captain’s antics here correspond with specific Book covers, and the background’s colors change to match! For Chorus #1 we have, in order: purple for Book 3, orange-on-yellow for Book 4, turquoise for Book 2, and blue for Book 1! (Not sure about the shot of him running towards the camera though.)
He flies up high in the air—he's not scared (Woosh!) Captain Underpants likes wearing underwear! He also likes fighting crime (Pssh!) Evil-doers beware, ‘cause it's superhero time!
Tumblr media
I'm just noticing this but what happened to the Dandelion of Doom here sdfghjk?? Is this a placeholder graphic that got left in? It looks much more book-accurate later in the video, which makes this even funnier.
And the lifestyle gets pretty rough (AAAH!) You gotta spend a lot of time fighting mean stuff like Talking Toilets and Professor Poopypants (Pssh!) When you're done, you do a little victory dance!
Tumblr media
This part kills me cus Poopypants was literally just standing there vkhjg. He even seems to sigh in resignation before the underwear hits!
[INSTRUMENTAL] Do the Wedgie Wiggle! [INSTRUMENTAL]
Tumblr media
In the Hall of the Mountain King, babyyy! This scene is just the Underpants Dance Flip-O-Ramas from Book 7, but with extra frames—and it looks amazing! The four bad guys scowling at Captain in the background are the icing on top!
Tumblr media
Good lord, that’s like, highlighter yellow. Seriously, who painted this school?
OH NO! The world's in trouble again (AAAH!) The lunchroom lady really IS an alien!
Fair warning: if a Second Epic Movie ever happens and they confirm the Alien!Edith thing, I will post this part but bass-boosted to obscene levels.
And it's all for... thrills and laffs!
I was promised Action, Thrills, and Laffs—where’s the Action?? For shame, video! I want a refund!
[GIRL]  Captain Underpants, can I get your autograph?
Tumblr media
About that inkling I mentioned earlier: I think Mrs. Dean may have voiced Autograph Girl here! Her voice sounds the slightest bit older than the chorus singers, and that’s my only point of evidence, but I can’t think of any other reason for that Additional Voices credit.
[CAPTAIN] Tra-la-laaaaa! (Woosh!)
[RANDOM GUY] COOL!
Captain Underpants should fly by MY school!
You and me both, Josh! I say despite no longer being in school Also I always felt bad that Captain just... flew off lol, I like to think that girl got his autograph later.
Bad guys and crime sprees, they don't even care— Now they stop in the name of underwear!
Tumblr media
This part is great dfghj. The smoothness, the Boys’ >:) look, the little detail of Booger Boy sniffling, I love it.
Hitting robots in the face and poking evil in the eye (Poink!) It's very fun when you defeat crime!
Tumblr media
If any British people read this, I’ve got a question: I know Dr. Diaper was renamed Dr. Nappy over there, but does that apply to the Movie too? Like, when Captain namedrops him near the end, did they have Ed Helms rerecord the line, or is he still called Dr. Diaper?
[GIRL] I wish I could do it all day long!
That's why all day long, you listen to this song about—
You bet your Poopypants I do!
[CHORUS] [x2]
Chorus #2 introduces two more scenes of Captain fighting Poopypants and the Dandelion of Doom. The Poopypants one is based on a Flip-O-Rama, and while making this post I thought the Dandelion one was, too. I checked Book 3 while wrapping up and turns out I was Mandela Effect-ing myself, but, like, it’d make for a good Flip-O-Rama, right? Here, I even made a mock-up of what I “remembered”.
Tumblr media
Also when Captain flies up in this scene, there’s a green dot where he stops (possibly to mark his position for the animators). Have fun un-seeing that!
[PROF. P] I’LL GET YOU, CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS!
I’m guessing Josh voices Poopypants here. This and Go Poopypants are kinda weird to listen to in a post-Movie world. Pour one out to parents and teachers who read these books aloud, I imagine kids get sad if they don’t do Zee Accent. (I know I would.)
Now the day's been saved and peace has been restored— Captain Underpants isn't needed anymore (Awww!)
PERISH THE THOUGHT. Must one be “needed” to justify their presence? Do people not exist beyond the services they perform?? Captain is a good and happy and fun guy and I love him and he should be allowed to stay!
Tumblr media
Anyway, look at this pile of assorted bad guys! We can see, from left to right and from bottom to top: Either the Booger Boy or the Robo-Boogers, Dr. Diaper, The Harold 2000, Wedgie Woman, Dr. Diaper’s robots, the Dandelion of Doom, the two burglars from Book 1, one of the Alien Lunch Ladies, and...
...The Inedible Hunk?? He’s an interesting pick, since he’s comic-exclusive and never comes to exist in “reality” like the others. This was his sole color appearance for 8 years until the In Full Color editions; he’s green there as opposed to yellow here. I think he looks suitably gross in both, though.
He's your pal, but also he's your PRINCI-pal! Sometimes he's ridiculous, sometimes inVINCI-bal!
Tumblr media
Krupp’s toupee just falls in from nowhere here lol. I like to think it got stuck to the ceiling after flying off at the start of the video.
But now, he's gotta enforce the rules By being mean, and being not cool So it's back to school life with a paper and pen, but then—
I called Katz’ stuff rap-adjacent earlier, but I’ll admit this part is pretty fire.
Tumblr media
Poor kid, about to get his yo-yo confiscated... In this moment, I’d gladly follow that sign’s instruction.
[GEORGE] Uh-oh.
[HAROLD] Here we go again!
You know how I said to keep the Boys’ voices in mind? Now, go find a clip from Epic Tales (or just use this) and listen to them there. You might find that they sound similar, despite being made thirteen years apart! Maybe DreamWorks had this video in mind when picking the show’s voice cast? Before the Movie and Epic Tales, Pilkey.com’s Flash videos were the only full-color, fully-animated CU Things for ages—I’d be surprised if they didn’t use them as references.
More possible evidence: Harold’s shirt colors! They fluctuated a lot until the Movie and Epic Tales settled on green stripes. In fact, his default shirt in Epic Tales resembles the one he wears in this video!
[CHORUS] [x2]
Tumblr media
Thus ends the music video ever: with a wink and... whatever this shot is!
What more is there to say? Besides some mashups and this amazing trap remix, this song’s legacy is an understated one. Pilkey.com has seen multiple redesigns since then, eventually retiring its Flash content; two new, higher-budget theme songs were made, and it’s hard to compete with Weird Al himself. Yes, Hooray’s time in the spotlight is long over, and it’s probably too late to reach out to anyone involved in its creation. After all, who’s gonna laud a potty-themed Flash video as their claim to fame?
Surprisingly, that question has an answer. And the answer is (drumroll please)... this Redditor!
Tumblr media
This has been an unnecessarily in-depth write-up about Hooray for Captain Underpants—thanks so much for reading this far! For my closing remarks, I’d like to plug that one trap remix again, discovering it made me die of laughter
Say hello to a former member of Mrs. Dean’s Music Class! (Except don’t actually go bother them about this, please respect their privacy.) I found this by complete accident last year and saved it to share here later, and now’s as good a time as any! I suggest that we heed their command and start worshipping them immediately!

Do you still talk to him?
Suddenly, I’m transported back to a damp bar on a snowy night in January. I’m sipping on a vodka soda when I accidentally lay my coat in a stranger’s lap. He had a glass of red wine, and a journal in which he scribbled in. I remember thinking how strange it was to write in a smoky pub.
“I might be dressed in all black as if I’m going to a funeral, but had no idea that rendered me invisible.” His English accent was smooth and went down easy, unlike the cheap vodka burning my throat.
“Maybe you’re the ghost, watching your own funeral unfold and you don’t even know it.” I replied with a raise of my eyebrows. Reaching across the bar, I gently tapped the edge of his notebook. “Write that down.”
We exchanged our names, and he called me bold. The first of many compliments that left an impression I didn’t expect. We joked about being ghosts floating through the world; unnoticed. I complimented his accent and noted he wasn’t from New York City. He gave me his best American impression, eventually settling on his new nickname: American Ghost. If only I had seen the irony then.
We hijacked the jukebox and played Fleetwood Mac, entangling in the little bar and bumping into chairs as we danced. The intensity of him felt like the first hit of a cigarette. There was a rush, a quickening to my heart rate, and a warmth that spread through me. Like I’d been waiting for a hit of him all day.
“Is it weird that I felt we’ve met before?” I asked as we twirled around the room. “Do you believe in past lives? Maybe we’ve been friends before.”
If past lives exist, I’d bet on us being friends.
That night, he called me beautiful. I asked him to show how beautiful I was, and he did. Over and over again — until there were no parts of me untouched by him. He made me feel special and coveted, even though I wasn’t.
——————————————————————
“No.” I replied, angrily tossing aside my paint brush at Ford’s question. “I haven’t.”
I knew my anger could be mistaken for pining — bitterness that I haven’t been talking to him; that we had not exchanged a word since I dropped his class. But it wasn’t that. The sour, unpleasant feeling his memory brought to me felt like bile in my throat. I hated remembering. I did not long for him, I only longed to forget. He’d stolen as much as he’d given… spitting me out when he’d had enough.
Sighing, I reached for Ford, taking his hand to gently rub his knuckles. “That was a very brief part of my past and that is where it will stay.” There was nothing left… nothing but shame, disgust, and regret.

"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
Hell's Kitchen
April 16, 2024 | Broadway | Shubert Theatre | Evening | Musical | Original | 2H 30M
Tumblr media
Fresh off its off-Broadway run that ended January 17th of this year, Hell's Kitchen loses nothing and gains even less. The snap-of-a-finger transfer capitalized on the strong ticket sales, but doomed this musical's clunky book. This season, many a show falls victim to tight turnarounds and are not given the time they need to truly improve. While critics of the off-Broadway production agreed this was a rousing Alicia Keys tribute show with phenomenal vocals, the book failed to deliver. Underdeveloped side characters, ill-constructed book, songs that are less about the story and more about the name recognition.
Hell's Kitchen's tragedy is not in its overdone mother/daughter teen-year bickering, or absent father, but in its unfulfilled potential. Much like the scaffolding set design (perhaps too unfavorably reminiscent of last season's flop New York, New York) the bones are strong as steel, but devoid of any real meat.
As a lead, Ali is sweet and infuriating and the quintessential teenager making horrible and immature life choices and being mad at her two-job-working mother who doesn't want her seventeen-year-old daughter to get involved with a grown ass man (age unspecified). I'm too old to sit through that story, and the dialogue is truly abysmal even to those who are invested. The music, like in any jukebox, takes center stage. And while performed and choreographed well, songs are often shoehorned in and do little to serve the already-weak book. Many of the songs are over-riffed, which may be a sure-fire crowd-pleaser, but I am tired of Elphabas--oh wait, Shoshana Bean was an Elphaba. It all makes sense now... oh no...
Hell's Kitchen has small moments of relief among the noise, but the emotional payoff to nearly all of Miss Liza Jane's (gorgeously sung) numbers feels thoroughly unearned and designed to manipulate audiences into believing this show has something deeper to say. It doesn't. Subplots of police brutality and systemic racism are thrown into the pit out of nowhere but are never given the opportunity to become something fleshed-out. It's as if the book wants to check these issues off the list with rousing, heartbreaking songs that are jarringly inserted into the narrative. Ultimately, the joy of seeing such a diverse cast on stage, performing so well, was eclipsed by the actual story.
Still, this is a show with undeniable commercial appeal. Everyone and their mother can sing along (loudly, off-key) to the two Alicia Keys songs they all know and hear blasting out of pedicabs all over Times Square. The tourists will flock to it, not for artistry, but for name recognition. And if this is how young people come to Broadway, that's great. I'll just be the bitter old codger shaking my fist at the youth's lack of taste.
Verdict: Well...I'm Glad I Saw It
