arborvitae juke!
arborvitae (unchanging friendship) — “i’ll always be here for you, no matter what.” (for juke)
It’s a hard day for Julie. She doesn’t have them very often anymore, going on four years without her mom, but grief doesn’t follow strict timelines or what Julie would like to be feeling. So sometimes, the day is hard simply because it is.
And that’s almost worse than an anniversary, because at least Julie can prepare for those.
But this is random. One moment she’s thinking about the band’s performances coming up, and the next she’s sobbing on her bedroom floor, wishing Rose Molina had been given more time with them, with her.
There’s a knock on her door, and Julie tries to stifle her sobs from whoever is out there, hand coming to cover her mouth. She hadn’t even thought about who might hear her, and she’s supposed to be better, supposed to be over the hump of feeling things so deeply it’s like a knife to her chest.
“Julie?”
Of course it’s Luke. She loves her boyfriend, truly, but it’s still hard sometimes to share her deepest pains with anyone. Julie likes being strong; she spent a year not touching music, but after her boys came into her life, showing her the joy in writing and singing and playing piano for her mom, she has prided herself on being there for them.
“Can I come in?” He asks through the door, anxious about the sounds he heard, she’s sure. Because Luke is the most empathetic person she knows; he wears his heart on his sleeve, and she knows he’s constantly worrying about her when she’s not at her fullest potential.
And honestly, the thought of a hug from Luke is enticing enough for her to whimper, “Yeah.”
Luke’s through the door in an instant, poofing to her side to save precious seconds. “Julie, what’s wrong?”
Julie throws herself into his arms and clings to his warm, real, alive, solid body. His arms wrap around her, safety and support and love flooding through them.
Finally Julie manages to gasp out, “I just want my mom,” and Luke’s hug tightens.
“I know,” he says softly into her hair. “I wish she were here too.”
He keeps whispering sweet nothings to her, until Julie’s sobs have turned into silent tears. She gives a half-smile and says, “Your bedside manner has gotten a lot better, you know.”
“Ya know what they say: practice makes perfect,” he quips, and Julie shakes her head.
“You hate that saying.” She can feel Luke smile against her.
“Doesn’t make it any less true in this instance,” he whispers.
Julie pulls away to look at him. She’s a mess, but Luke is staring with such a fond, love-lorn expression that Julie suddenly doesn’t care one bit.
“You know I’ll always be here for you, no matter what, right?” he says, one hand caressing her cheek and wiping away the last of her tears.
Julie nods, biting her lip to keep from crying all over again. “What did I do to get so lucky?” she says, voice hoarse from her grief.
“Nah, I’m the lucky one,” Luke replies. “And we’ll help each other, always. Right?”
“Right,” Juile says before leaning her head on his chest, letting herself be wrapped in his arms once more.

——————𖠄———————
“Hey, Julie. I was wondering if I walked around singing WAP would that be weird?” Anastasia said as she entered the Molina home.
Julie not even looking up at Anastasia who just walked into her home said: “Yes that would be weird.”
Anastasia sat down next to her at the table opening her backpack and pulling out her homework. “What about if I was dancing around town?”
Julie looks up at her friend wondering why she’s asking these questions. “That would be worse and probably get you arrested.”
“Well, know which one I’m doing then.”
Julie looked at her friend like she was crazy before playfully hitting. “I’m not even going to ask why.”
Anastasia giggled as she looked down and started to work on her homework with Julie.
“What happened to you?” Asked Julie as she noticed the bruises.
Anastasia didn’t even look up from her homework to answer her friend. “Fell during a stunt but I’m alright, don’t worry. Also, what are you going to tell your dad?”
“There’s a reason why I asked my dad to ask your mom if you could spend the night,” Julie said looking at the redheaded girl across from her. Anastasia looking back at her shaking her head at the girl's plan. Speaking of Julie’s dad after Julie finished that sentence. He had just started to come down the stairs of the house.
“Oh, good. Your home.” Said Julie’s, Dad Ray.
“Hello, Mr. Molina.”
“Anastasia, you know you can call me, Ray.”
“Sorry, Ray,” Anastasia mumbled before going back to doing her homework. Ray chuckled at her.
“As I was going to say, Julie, I was just about to go watch your brother’s game. I’ve had photoshoots all day. Didn’t even get a chance to eat.  Ray said sitting down on a stool near him looking at Julie.
“But, I got a phone call today,” Ray said, causing Julie and Anastasia to look at each other.
“Yeah, I figured as much,” Julie said, taking off her glasses.
“Yeah. Well, it was my realtor friend.”
“Oh, that,” said Julie with a sigh of relief.
“Yeah, and she says if we’re serious about selling the house, then she wants me to take some pictures for the website. Which means we’ll have to do a lot of cleaning and get rid of some stuff. And maybe you can... tackle Mom’s studio and since Anastasia is here she can help you.” Ray asked.
Anastasia looked at Julie to see if she was okay with it since her mom’s studio.
“You two are the experts. You know Carlos and I wouldn’t know where to begin. It’s Okay, honey. If your not ready, I—“
“No. It’s alright. Maybe we’ll try to tonight.” Julie said, grabbing Anastasia’s hand for support who was quiet but just nodded at Ray.
“Yeah?” Ray clapped his hands together. “Awesome, mija. Thank you. Oh and don’t forget the loft.” He pointed to the two girls in front of him. “You know the old instruments that were there when we moved in?”
Both girls nodded.
“They need a new home.” He said before getting off the stool.
“Mom would like that.” Said Julie.
“Yeah, she would. Oh, god. I’m gonna be late.” Said Ray as he started to look around for his keys.
“I believe they’re under the mail.” Said Anastasia breaking her silence to help Ray out.
“You’re a lifesaver. Bye, girls.” Ray said before leaving the house.
“Bye!” Both girls said.
“Are sure you want to do this Julies. We don’t have to.” Asked Anastasia.
Julie quietly nodded. Anastasia watched her but didn’t say anything else because she didn’t want to upset her.
——————𖠄———————
As it hits night time the two girls finally make it over to Julie’s mom’s studio. They both push the doors open. Julie was hesitant to walk in there. Anastasia walks in there first before stopping to look at Julie.
“If you’re not ready we don’t have to,” Anastasia said with concern.
“No, I’m ready.” Said Julie before walking straight in.
“It would be wrong to do the WAP dance right?”
Julie chuckled. “Very wrong, funny but wrong.”
“Just trying to make you happy.”
Julie walks towards the lights to turn them on. Anastasia looks at the loft before going up there. Julie walks to the grand piano in the center of the room. She circles it for a good five seconds before moving the papers on the bench and sitting down.
“I’m sorry, Mom. That I haven’t been here.” Said Julie.
Anastasia waited a couple of seconds before speaking up. “Hey, There’s a guitar case, a keyboard and some drums stick up here. I also found a CD in a box up here. Want to listen to it? Anastasia grabbed the Cd before coming down from the loft.
“Sure, let me see it.”
As Anastasia started to come down from the loft she handed Julie the CD and went to sit down on the couch. Julie hands over to the CD player, takes the disk out of the case, and places it in there to start it. Julie walks over to Anastasia to sit down next to her.
The song started to play.
“ONE! TWO! THREE! Take off, last stop! Count down till we blast open the top! Face first, full charge—“
The girls were nodded to the music and soon covered their ears with their hands when they heard screaming.
Three guys appeared out of nowhere and fell to the ground moaning and groaning. The two girls stood up in complete shock. Anastasia rubs her eyes thinking that she’s just dreaming.
“Whoa!”
“Whoa!” How did we get back here.” Said one of the boys.
Both girls started to scream, causing the boys to scream, jumping up and holding each other. Julie pointed at them before running out.
“Hey don’t fucking leave me here with them.” Said Anastasia before running out quicker than people during Black Friday.
“Dad!” Screaming Julie as her dad and brother were approaching the front door of the house.
“Woah, Hey.” Said Ray catching Julie. “Woah slow down.” Ray was catching Anastasia next. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“We have!” Julie yelled.
“Cool.” Said Carlos Julie's little brother.
“No, it is not cool Carlos.” Yelled Anastasia.
“Run!” Screamed Julie as she ran to the front door. Anastasia was quickly running behind her. You could hear Julie screaming as she headed upstairs to her room.
“Julie, what are you doing!”
Julie grabs her phone and starts to text Flynn. “Come on, Flynn. 911 means 911. Why aren’t you answering me?” Julie whispered, shouted.
“Maybe it’s because she’s busy.”
“Hey.”
Anastasia jumped and held her chest looking at Ray.
“Dad,” Julie said, sighing. Anastasia sat down on Julie's bed looking at both of them.
“Sorry. Just wanted to make sure you guys were okay.” Ray said walking into the room.
“You don’t believe us do you?” Asked Julie as she folded her arms.
“Honey, of course, I do. Mija. I see your mom all the time”
“This isn’t like that.” Said Julie.
“I know. It’s different for all of us.” Ray shrugged his shoulder.
“Mr. Molina. Sorry I mean Ray, you're not listening to us. We saw something out there.” Said Anastasia getting up pointing to the window.
“Alright, Okay. Okay. I’m listening. Tell me what you saw. It’s just you and me here.” Ray sat down in the chair.
“You sound just like Dr. Turner,” Julie said, crossing her arms.
“Well, maybe seeing Dr. Turner again isn’t such a bad idea,” Ray suggested.
“Dad!” Julie shouted.
“Can we just drop it?” Julie asked.
“Alright, dropped.” Ray held his finger out. “We’re good.”
“Yeah.”
Julie held her finger out. Ray and Julie looked at Anastasia motioning for her to join.
“Anastasia, Your family too. Come over here mija. Said Ray.
Anastasia smiled and got up and joined them. They crossed their fingers shaking them.
Ray snapped his fingers and left the room.
Julie and Anastasia looked at each other then looked toward the window.
“Get your cross, Julie.” Said Anastasia before grabbing her phone and heading downstairs. Julie soon followed after her as they headed to the studio.
Anastasia used her right foot to slowly open the door letting Julie walk in first. Anastasia walked behind her quietly praying.
“Are you still here? Whatever you are.” Said Julie.
“Maybe, this is one sick dream.” Said Anastasia.
“I know we saw something. We’re not crazy.” Said Julie looking at Anastasia.
“Well, we’re all a little crazy.”
Both girls turned around. Anastasia had jumped knowing it was one of the boys that said that. While Julie started to scream holding up her cross.
“Oh my god! Please stop screaming!” Said the taller of the three.
“Who the hell are you guys and what are you doing in my friend’s mom’s studio?” Asked Anastasia, giving them a glare.
“It’s my mom’s studio.” Said Julie.
“You’re mom’s studio? This our studio. Trust me, my.....” said one of the boys as Julie held the cross to him as he slid on top of the piano and went over the couch.
“The Grand piano is new, and.. and.. and... MY COUCH!” He said, throwing himself onto Julie’s couch.
Anastasia looked at Julie weirdly. “This is completely not making sense at all.” Saying out loud then whispering to Julie saying “He kinda reminds me of Troy for High school musical.” Julie lightly hit her trying not to laugh. “Sorry” she mumbled with a smile.
“That is definitely not my six-string.” He looked at both of the girls. “Can you give me just one second?” Julie held the cross up to help yet again as he started moving back. “Just give me a second. Thank you.” He turned around and immediately look at the other two boys in the room.
“What in the world is going on.” Whisper Anastasia.
“I don’t know. This is all crazy.” Replied Julie.
“Maybe... Maybe they’re witches. There’s chairs hanging from the ceiling.” The girls heard.
“If I was that would explain so much.” Said Anastasia to Julie. “We can hear you, you know.” The boys chose to ignore the comment she made and continued their conversation.
“Rude.”
“They are not witches. Okay, look. They are scared. Let someone with a softer touch handle this.” The blonde boy turned away from the other boys and walked to the two girls.
“Why are you in our studio.” The blond raised his voice.
“OMG, that made me feel so much better about this situation,” Anastasia said sarcastically, rolling her eyes causing one of them both to quietly laugh. Julie then stuck her through his chest and pulled it back. Anastasia jaw dropped.
“Oh my gosh! How did you do that?
“Clearly, you're not understanding... they don’t get it. Okay, look. We’re ghosts, alright? We’re just three ghosts, and we’re really happy to be home. So thank you for the flowers. They really brighten up the room.”
“We’re actually in a band called Sunset Curve.” Said the shortest one.
“Tell your friends.” Said the boy in a leather jacket.
“Last night was supposed to be a really big night for us. It was gonna change our lives.” The boy said.
“I’m, uh... I’m pretty sure it did.” Said the blond.
“This is freaking me out.” Said Julie. Anastasia pulls out her phone and so does Julie.
“What is that? What are you doing.”
“These are our phones,” Anastasia said.
“No. Stop talking to them, they aren’t real. There’s no such thing as cute ghosts.” Said Anastasia. As soon as she said she covered her mouth.
“Oh, you think we’re cute?” One of the boys said causing Anastasia to send them a glare. Anastasia looked back at her phone.
“Who you calling?”
“I’m googling Sunset Swerve.”
“Sunset Curve.” The three boys said together making a motion of a curve with their fingers.
“Wow, don’t get all upset.” Said Anastasia before tapping Julie motioning her to look at her phone.
“Whoa. There is a Sunset Curve. You did die but not last night.” Said Julie.
Anastasia looks up from her phone. “Twenty-five years ago?”
“What? No. No, no, no. Th-Tha- That’s impossible. After we floated out of the ambulance, all we did was go to that weird, dark room where Alex cried.” Said The boy next to Alex.
“Well... I don’t think... I think we’re all pretty upset. Okay.” Alex said in a high pitched voice.
“But that was just for like an hour. We just showed up here.” Said the short boy.
“We’re just telling you what my phone said.” Said Anastasia showing the boys her phone.
“See? You died in 1995. When you were 17. It’s now  2020.” Said Julie.
“I’m sure you can call 2020 a living hell.” Said Khaila.
“That’s an understatement.” Said Julie.
“Wait, so, this is the future.” One of the boys asked.
Anastasia smiled and nodded trying to reinsure the boys in front of her.
“Wait. So....so, it has been 25 years.” Anastasia nodded. “I have been crying for 25 years? How is that possible? Alex asked.
“Well, you're a very emotional person.” Said the boy in the leather jacket.
“I am not!”
“Thought you were afraid to come out here. Talking to your ghost friend? How does he look? Is he hideous?”
“He can see you”
“No, he can’t.” Said Julie.
“What?” Carlos questioned.
“Uh, what do you want, Carlos.”
“Normal sister, and somewhat sister, for starters. Stop being weird and come eat.” Carlos said before leaving.
“I’m gonna kill him.” Said Asia talking about Carlos. Julie held her back.
“He couldn’t see you.” Said Julie.
“Yeah. I mean that’s......usually how ghosts work.” Said Alex looking at Julie.
“Look, I’m very sorry for what happened to you guys, but this isn’t your studio anymore. You have to leave.” Said Julie getting ready to walk out of the door.
“But wait... we... We didn’t get your names?”
“It’s Julie.”
“I’m Anastasia.”
“I- I’m Lu....ke by the way.” Said Luke as Julie held her cross in front of him. “And this is...”
“Reggie. I’m Reggie. Hey.” Said Reggie smiled and waved to the girls
“And.”
“Alex. How’s it going?” Alex said.
“Ba-da,” Luke said.
“Okay.” Said Julie coldly before walking away. Anastasia walked out but soon stopped and turned around to the boys.
“I’m really sorry about her. She’s normally not like this. If you need a place to hang out I can help.” Anastasia said smiling at the three boys before walking off.
“They seem nice.” Said Reggie.
“Did you miss the part where Julie kicked us out?” Alex looked completely annoyed by Reggie.
“Anastasia did offer us a place to stay since Julie kicked us out.” Said Luke.
“See that’s nice.” Said Alex talking to Reggie.

yes yes yes jatp baby driver
One 5 AM riff  for Baby Driver x JATP AU coming up:
________________
"Top off?"
Julie takes off an earbud, shocked, "E-Excuse me?"
The waiter flushes but gestures to her half- empty cup, "I, uh, meant your coffee."
"Oh," she chuckles awkwardly, "I thought, er, well-" She fiddles with the wires. God, why can't I be a normal human?  Then she remembers she's a getaway driver- ahem, an 'evasive manuevers specialist' for a living and realizes ‘yup, that’s why’.
"I mean, kind of an indecent request to be making in public, don't you think?" the guy jokes, "This is a family friendly establishment."
"Right,"
"Yeah..."
He still stands there, waiting expectantly, and Julie's jarred out of her lapse in coherent thought and nods, sliding out her cup.
The waiter dutifully fills it up and Julie finds the way his face is scrunched up in concentration to be kinda adorable, especially as he completes such a small task.
"Thanks, uh," she glances up at the name tag, "... Chloe?"
"What?" He peers down at his shirt and cringes, "Shit. Must have grabbed the wrong one."
"I was just gonna say it was an interesting choice of name. I like it,"
"Oh really?" Then the guy, grips the edge of the table and leans forward, "Speaking of names, can I get yours?"
She has no idea what it is about this guy that makes her want to tell him her actual name.
The burner phone weighing down in her jacket pocket warns her otherwise...
The waiter can tell he's made her uncomfortable and he quickly backtracks.
"I mean, I see you here all the time. I just like to get to know the regulars. Make sure to set you up real good, have your usual ready to go and all that. But you don't have to-"
"Baby," she says finally, her worn out moniker feeling foreign on her tongue.
The waiter raises an eyebrow, “What?”
She slips off her shades to look at him properly, "The name's Baby. Don't ask. You could say my parents were hippies or something." (Now the latter part was technically true...)
"'Baby', huh?" he drawls out, tasting for the lie. “Yeah,”  He knows it's not her real name, but he doesn't push. Instead he goes with it, smiling at her as he makes his way back to the counters.
"Nice to meet you, Baby. I'm Luke, by the way," He turns back, "Not Chloe."
She shakes her head, "Nah, you'll always be Chloe to me." Well done, Jules. You can make a joke afterall... "Well okay then,” Chuckling, he dives under the counter, sets the coffee pot back. Since it’s only her in the diner during this rainy afternoon, Luke loudly whistles at one of the cooks, "Hey Reg, whip up Baby's usual for me will ya?" The cook peers over and spots her. He nods in recognition. Then he locks eyes with Luke, smirking, "One 'Baby Special' coming right up..." i’ll be honest i would’ve liked there to be more instances where the show makes references towards julie and her family being latine,,,, like her tía does speak spanish in a few scenes (would’ve nice to see more dialogue between characters that utilize spanish) there was also a really good opportunity for adding some of the culture like when carlos and ray go to eat the french drip it would’ve been really great to hear them say ‘buen provecho’ to each other before eating or having julie (or ray) talk a little bit in spanish especially when they’re talking to rose even if it’s just a sentence or a small PR flag in the background it just would’ve nice to see more of that kind of thing within the representation

So here’s another except from my Living!Phantom au and I wrote this, which got me thinking.
But the piano player waved away his apology. It wasn’t his fault. She meant to tell her Dad yesterday, but she could never find the right time to mention it because Carlos had been really excited about how his baseball team had won their game and about what Willie had taught him during their skating lesson. Juile hadn’t wanted to take that attention away from her brother, she had done that enough in the past year already
I get that Julie is the main character. But we never hear about Carlos’ grief. Yet he lost his mom too. Which led me to another thought spiral. Carlos tends to act like he’s the older sibling in his relationship with Julie.  What if Julie handled her mom’s death so badly that Carlos kind of got pushed to the side a little? What if Carlos thought he had to keep most of his grief to himself because Julie was handling it that badly? (Not that Ray or Victoria would do that intentionally) But Julie had to go see Dr. Turner 3 times a week to help handle her grief. No one mentioned Carlos having to go see Dr. Turner or another therapist to handle his grief.  Ray was thinking about moving because they thought it help Julie. I’m not saying that they were moving just for Julie, but from the context we can gather that she was the main reason.
Anyways, thanks for coming to my ted talk on Carlos Molina and why he tends to act like the big brother in his and Julie’s relationship.

Little Songbird Part 2: All I’ve Ever Known
Part 1 | Masterlist
Chapter song is "All I've Ever Known" from Hadestown the Musical. I encourage you to listen to it if you haven't before because it fits perfectly for Luke and Julie. Enjoy my loves!
Tumblr media
Julie couldn’t sleep.
It wasn’t all that surprising to her, given the events of the day. It wasn’t every day she took down an evil ghost intent on stealing her soul and destroying her band and best friends. But she definitely thought she would be exhausted from discovering she possessed a supernatural ability to love and break curses put on her by said evil ghost.
When her and the boys had exited the Hollywood Ghost Club, the euphoria they had felt overcame them. Reggie and Luke had whooped loudly and grabbed each other in a huge hug. Alex had bent over and braced his hands on his knees, breathing in and out slowly. Julie wanted to comfort him, but she was in the middle of a busy street in downtown LA and her legs were shaking so badly she was worried they would give out on her. She pulled out her airpods and placed them in her ears as Luke and Reggie turned to her.
“How did you do that?” Reggie demanded gleefully. “I mean, did you see how terrified Caleb was? And how cool was your whole ‘you’re gonna leave my family alone or else’ speech? You’re like a hero from an action movie!”
Before Julie could answer any of his questions, Alex stood up and blew out a huge breath.
“As big of a fan of Badass Julie I am, promise me you will never go after an evil ghost by yourself again huh? I didn’t think ghosts could have heart attacks until I heard ‘Julie’s with Caleb and needs help’.”
“Oh, you should probably call Flynn before she sends out a search party.” Reggie added, “She was pretty worried.”
As if summoned, Juile’s phone rang shrilly and she winced at the volume in her ears. Sure enough ‘ Flynn the Great’ flashed on her phone, along with the selfie they had taken before Julie’s garage party. She swiped the answer button on her phone.
“Hey Flynn-”
“HEY? That’s all you give me is HEY?! You send me a 911 text that you are with some psycho evil ghost who tried to steal your bandmates who I then had to hope were in the studio so I could tell them to rescue you and all I get is HEY?!”
Julie winced. Partly because Flynn was right and partly at the sheer volume of the call. The boys winced and Reggie gave her a sympathetic look.
“I’m sorry Flynn, I didn’t have time to call you or explain more.”
“Are you okay? You still have your soul right? Are the guys okay? You have a gig in three days and it would really suck if we have to reschedule so we can rescue the himbos again…”
Julie giggled.
“We’re all fine. I’ll um…” Julie glanced at the boys and saw them looking at her intently, waiting for her response.
She was suddenly hit by a wave of exhaustion. She wanted nothing more than to go home, curl up under her blankets, and sleep for the next three days.
“Flynn, is it okay if I call you later? I’m waiting for the bus and it’s...not a great time…”
Flynn paused and Julie prepared to explain everything. It wasn’t fair to leave Flynn hanging like she was. But she also didn’t want to have to go into details about evil ghosts and sudden superpowers over the phone and around other bus riders.
Flynn sighed gently in her ear.
“I’m glad you’re okay, Jules. Call me when you can or I’ll hunt you down…”
A rush of love filled Julie and she quietly said goodbye to her best friend as the bus pulled up. She jumped on, seeing the boys follow her to the empty back seats.
By the time they had arrived home, the weariness had settled in Julie’s bones and Alex had to basically carry her in the house. Her dad was out at one of Carlos’ games, so they were easily able to get her up to her room.
“Are you okay?” Luke asked quietly. It was the first he’d spoken since they had left the club and he perched himself on the edge of her bed, eyes scanning her intently. Julie smiled sleepily up at him.
“I am, I promise. I guess discovering and using supernatural powers will really take a lot out of you.” she mumbled.
“So...how did you discover these supernatural powers?” Alex asked, sitting gently on her other side. Reggie placed himself at her feet and rested a hand on her leg.
“It was something my mom used to say to me. She told me that love was the most powerful feeling in the world and that sharing love would be my greatest power. And I remembered the night of the Orpheum, how all I could think about was how much I loved you guys and how much I wish I could save you and then…” Julie yawned lightly.
“And then the magical group hug to end all band circles.” Reggie finished proudly. Luke rolled his eyes fondly and Julie giggled.
“Yup. You know the rest.”
“So that explains how you saved us. But how were you able to fend Caleb off? He was going to stamp you and then it was like he was burned. I don’t understand.” Alex was thoroughly confused.
“I do.” Reggie said, his eyes watery. He rubbed Julie’s ankle comfortingly.
“It was our love for Julie that protected her. Like hers did the night of the Orpheum. It made her glow.”
The silence between the four of them stretched long. It wasn’t a new revelation that the band loved each other, but more of a realization of how deeply that love ran. Tears prickled in Julie’s eyes as she realized how grateful she was for these three ghosts that had dropped into her life and changed it irrevocably.
“I love you guys,” she whispered, the lump in her throat making it hard to talk any louder.
“We love you too, Julie.” Reggie murmured. The three boys simultaneously crawled into the circle of Julie’s embrace and cuddled close on her bed. Reggie rested his head on her knees and hugged her legs tightly while Alex pulled her into his chest and pressed her face into the junction of his shoulder. Luke curled into her back and tentatively rested his arm along hers. When she pulled him decisively closer, she felt him smile into her hair and decided to ignore the fluttering in her stomach for the time being.
She knew they would have to talk about what Caleb had revealed at some point. But the feeling of contentment that spread through her body at the feeling of being surrounded by three of the most important people in her life kept her from disrupting the moment.
They laid like that for hours, not speaking. Julie thought she would drift off eventually as the events of the day caught up to her, but her eyes refused to close. She felt Luke combing gently through her curls, twisting them though his fingers. Reggie would squeeze her legs gently every once in a while and Alex gently tapped a beat against her arm with his fingers. It was soothing, these little quirks from the boys. It wasn’t until her dad knocked gently on the door and informed her that dinner was ready that she extracted herself from the band and made her way downstairs. Carlos filled the usual dinner chatter and Julie excused herself as soon as the dishes were done to go upstairs and call Flynn back.
Her best friend was understandably astounded when she finished telling her what had happened. Julie had omitted the part where she had almost given into Caleb’s promises on her own volition. She hadn’t fully come to terms with that idea herself and she knew Flynn would absolutely freak out on her.
“Well damn girl. Are we completely sure you aren’t living in a supernatural movie? First three ghosts literally drop into your life, then you’re basically kidnapped by another evil ghost who wants to steal your soul, now you’re telling me you discovered some sort of super power that saved you from the crazy ghost man?”
“You’re telling me.” Julie had groaned.
Now, after telling Flynn goodbye almost two hours ago, Julie still couldn’t fall asleep. She knew she couldn’t just forget about Caleb’s promises and the reasons she had almost given in.
“I can’t lose anyone else that I love!”
“You won’t!”
“Yes I will! You’ll all cross over and I’ll just keep losing people I love.”
“No you won’t Julie. I know you. Even if one day we do cross over, we will always be with you. I will always be with you, right here. Right beside you. I couldn’t leave you even if I tried!”
Julie shook herself out of the memory and was out of bed before she knew what she was doing. Her monster slippers were on her feet and she blindly reached for a sweater before creeping out of her room. It was late enough that her dad’s light was off and the house was silent, so she avoided any creaky stairs and only opened the back door wide enough to slip through it.
Her steps became more determined. She knew what she needed to say. She’d been dancing around this for too long and Caleb had taken advantage of it.
She reached the studio doors and threw them open, preparing to shoo Reggie and Alex away when the scene in front of her stopped her in her tracks.
There were four ghosts in her studio.
Reggie and Luke were loosely grouped around Alex and the other dark haired boy. He had his hands braced on Alex’s shoulders and Alex had his on his waist. The boy’s long tresses were wild around his head, his dark eyes snapping to meet hers as she entered the studio.
“Julie?” he asked. Alex turned and Julie could tell by the look on his face exactly who he was.
“Hey Willie.” she smiled.
“You can see him?” Alex demanded. Julie nodded and Alex looked on the verge of a breakdown before Willie grabbed his hand.
“I had a feeling this might happen.” Willie said. Julie would have been more concerned if she didn’t catch the hint of a smile on his face.
“What do you mean? What happened?” she asked.
“You, Julie Molina, are the most powerful lifer I have ever met.” he laughed. He gestured for Julie to sit on the couch, where Reggie and Luke followed almost immediately. They sat beside her as Willie took the chair and pulled Alex to sit on the arm beside him.
“I wasn’t there when Caleb tried to trick you. But I definitely felt it when you broke my stamp,”
“Wait, WHAT?” Alex squawked. Willie chuckled, ever the picture of ease.
“I felt some kind of sting on my wrist that I haven’t felt since Caleb stamped me. Then I looked at it and it was like it floated off my arm and disappeared. And I felt...stronger. Like my soul had just been reconnected. When I went back to the club, I realized that I couldn’t get back in. You can only be allowed inside if you’re a part of the club or you're invited. And that’s when I knew I was free.”
“Wait, so you mean to say that Julie was able to save you just like she saved us?” Luke asked.
“It’s the only explanation I can think of since my stamp came off.” Willie shrugged.
“You did tell Caleb to leave Willie alone. Y’know, when you were being a badass and all…” Reggie interjected.
“You did?” Willie asked, suddenly soft. Julie nodded.
“You’re family, Willie. I wasn’t about to tick the evil scheming ghost off with my super cool powers and leave you to clean up the mess.”
He turned and met Julie’s gaze. The laid back attitude she somehow knew was his default setting suddenly melted into somber remorse.
“Julie, I want to apologize to you.”
Julie was taken aback.
“For what?” she asked incredulously.
“For getting the boys into that mess at the club. I honestly...I thought it was a great place. It was the first place I knew where I felt like I belonged. Caleb...I swear I never thought he could be capable of what he did. I knew he was difficult sometimes but he always offered me the freedom to do what I wanted. And when I met these really cool ghosts who could be seen by a lifer, I thought they would be happy at the club and could really learn to love it there, like I did. So I invited them to Caleb’s party
“And then Caleb stamped them--I swear to you I didn’t know he would!--and then I kept checking on them to see if I could maybe find a time to tell them what happened. I told them they would be able to cross over if they figured out what their unfinished business was. I know it wouldn’t make up for what I did, but then at least they wouldn’t be trapped somewhere they never wanted to stay. They never wanted to stay at Caleb’s club, they only wanted to be in a band with you. And I almost took that away from them. I will never forgive myself from almost taking them from you.”
Julie, after all the emotion and turmoil of the day, felt the tears brimming and Willie looked like he wanted to poof away. Julie stood and reached out for him, hoping with everything in her that what she was thinking would work. She was only mildly surprised when her hand went right through his and she sighed.
“Alex, can you please hug him for me?” she whined jokingly. Willie and Alex’s faces lit up before the blonde pulled him up and into his arms. Julie and the other two boys watched with excited expressions as Willie pulled Alex as close as he could.
Julie hadn’t been lying when she’d called Willie family. Despite what he had done initially under Caleb’s control, he had risked everything to help save her boys. He had sacrificed his own happiness with Alex in order to keep them from being trapped like he was. The least she could do was try and save him too.
She suddenly felt pressure on her hand and she turned to see Luke linking his pinkie finger with hers. When she met his gaze, he nodded to the couple still embracing and mouthed ‘thank you’. Julie nodded, smiling.
No question.
When Alex and Willie finally pulled away, Willie looked around and whistled.
“This place is dope! Can’t wait to hear what you guys are working on next.”
“We have a gig coming up in a few days! You should hear the new stuff Luke and Julie have been working on!” Reggie squealed eagerly. He suddenly gasped.
“Does this mean we have our own roadie now?” he asked, wide eyed. Luke snorted and Julie laughed. Alex just shook his head and muttered an “okay Reg”.
“Hey Willie! Let's go to the beach and moon the lifers down there!” Reggie suggested, jumping up from his spot on the couch. Alex rolled his eyes until Willie cackled and slung an arm around the bassist’s shoulder.
“I’ve always wanted to go for a midnight swim…” he crowed. He turned to Alex and raised an eyebrow.
“Y’comin, hot dog?” he asked mischievously. Alex couldn’t help the grin that spread across his face as he glanced over at Luke and Julie.
“I’ll pass on this one, guys. Just stay out of trouble please? I’ve already dealt with enough supernatural today.” she warned.
“Same here.” Luke said simply. The boys nodded before poofing out and Julie and Luke were alone.
Julie felt her heart stumble in her chest. What she had been banking on less than an hour ago was suddenly in her grasp. The determination she had felt earlier, before finding Willie, had evaporated.
Her and Luke had never been awkward around each other. From the moment he had stood in front of her and told her “we’re all a little crazy”, they had been two kindred souls. She’d found out he’d been the one who had written her favorite songs that had informed her love of music. They had both lost their mothers in different ways and found comfort in music. Even her mom, an enigma she never imagined, had somehow been connected to her boys as evidenced by the love and care that went into the bedazzled Sunset Curve t-shirt Julie had folded in the bottom of her drawer.
Everything in her life had somehow pointed her towards Luke. She couldn’t ignore the signs. They had always been there.
“Julie…”
Julie’s head snapped up to see Luke standing at the piano. He was leaning against the side of it, fiddling nervously with his rings.
“What happened today? Why were you at that club?” he asked quietly. Julie knew he wasn’t angry with her. She had felt his fear and later relief when he had pulled her from her trance.
“Nick called me. He said that he was in trouble and no one was picking up. He said he needed me and told me to go to the club. Caleb used him to trick me into coming.” Julie felt her ire burn when she remembered the lie. Poor Nick. She would have to call him in the morning and check on him.
“Oh.” Luke said simply.
Julie mentally quirked an eyebrow. Luke was many things, but he was not frugal with his words. When he was really fired up, he could go for hours until someone--usually Alex--shut him up by blasting Julie’s Spotify on the loudest volume. And even then he could sometimes talk over it and critique the music, much to his bandmate’s chagrin.
“Are you okay?” she asked, standing up and moving towards him. As she reached a hand out to place it on his arm, he abruptly jumped away from her. Julie watched, her arm still raised, as Luke began to pace the studio.
“How could I be okay, Julie? Do you understand how terrified I was? Caleb was this close to stealing your soul! What could have happened if we hadn’t gotten there in time? He would have taken you and we would have lost you. I would have lost you!”
“I’m sorry, Luke. I never would have gone if I knew what he was planning. He was putting some kind of spell on me and I tried to fight it as hard as I could.”
“But what about after?” Luke demanded. “You said it was the only way you could keep from losing us. You were well aware of what he could do and you let him try again. How could you even think that was an option?”
“Luke,” Julie murmured, moving closer to him. “I have never been more sorry in my life. I know it was wrong of me to even think about taking his deal. I never would have considered it before tonight.”
“So why did you?” he asked. There it was. The hurt and dread that had been just under the surface all night. Julie sighed.
“Because I don’t know if I’m strong enough to lose someone again.” she replied. Luke looked ready to interrupt but Julie held her hand up to stop him.
“I know you are about to say something wonderful and sweet about how brave I am and how you would never leave me. But the reality is, Luke, someday there will be a day that you three will cross over. Maybe it’s next week, maybe three months, or maybe it’ll be in ten years. And I will still be here. I won’t be able to follow you, no matter how much I want to. I will still have to live my life.
“So yeah, when Caleb offered me the opportunity to keep you three forever I thought about it. I’m not proud of it, but I wanted to be selfish. I wanted to not only save myself the pain of losing three of my best friends, but I wanted to hold onto the magic we make as a band.”
“You are not selfish.” Luke protested vehemently, darting over to stand in front of Julie. Julie smiled.
“All that and that’s what you take from it?” she teased. Luke grinned.
“Reggie called me the ‘number one Julie Molina stan’ or ‘fan’ or whatever he said. Just trying to live up to the title.” Julie giggled and Luke’s face melted into an expression of such softness that it made her heart flutter. She continued, aware of the electricity between them.
“And then you sang ‘Finally Free’ and I knew you were right. You will always be a part of me, no matter what happens. And I knew there was no deal that Caleb could come up with that would change that.”
Luke smiled softly at her, reaching out to push a wayward curl out of her face.
“What I said was true, y’know,” he murmured. “I will always find a way back to you, Julie.”
It was as powerful as if he had said the words he really meant. Julie could feel her heart expanding and bursting at the seams.
She knew. She knew that her feelings for Luke Patterson had grown and shifted and bloomed. It was undeniable. She found herself, like many times before, wishing she could run up to her mother and ask her the question that had burned itself into her mind day after day since that night on the porch.
Is this what love feels like? Is this what all the songs are about?
She felt the whisper of an answer.
Yes.
Julie smiled and grabbed Luke’s hand.
“C’mere. I want to play you something…” she said. He let himself be pulled over to the piano, where Julie sat down and shifted so there was room beside her. He gently took his spot, gazing at her.
“Whatcha got for me, boss?” he teased. Julie grinned and shook her head, before placing her hands on the keys and beginning to play a gentle melody.
“I was alone so long
I didn't even know that I was lonely.
Out in the cold so long
I didn't even know that I was cold.
Turned my collar to the wind
This is how it's always been.
All I've ever known is how to hold my own.
All I've ever known is how to hold my own.
But now I wanna hold you, too.”
Julie glanced over to take in Luke’s expression of awe and adoration that made the butterflies in her stomach flutter. He wordlessly turned in his seat so his legs hung off the back of the bench and his guitar landed in his lap. Tenderly, letting her lead, he began to strum the melody with her as her voice swelled with the music.
“You take me in your arms
And suddenly there's sunlight all around me.
Everything bright and warm
And shining like it never did before.
And for a moment I forget
Just how dark and cold it gets.
All I've ever known is how to hold my own.
All I've ever known is how to hold my own.
But now I wanna hold you,
Now I wanna hold you
Hold you close.
I don't ever wanna have to let you go.
Now I wanna hold you, hold you tight
I don't wanna go back to the lonely life.”
Julie let her falsetto carry the last note, closing her eyes. She had never felt this vulnerable, even when she had stood in front of the entire Orpheum audience and prepared to sing without the boys. But if the last year had taught her anything, she needed to open her heart. She couldn’t hide it away anymore.
Luke’s gentle, tenor rasp took over and she opened her eyes to see him gazing at her with a multitude of emotions in his eyes. She continued to play, never moving her gaze from his.
“I don't know how or why
Or who am I that I should get to hold you?
But when I saw you all alone against
The skies, it’s like I'd known you all along
I knew you before we met
And I don't even know you yet.
All I know is you’re someone I have always known.”
Julie felt the truth of his words wash over her. It was exactly what she had been thinking before she’d gone to the studio. Their connection was undeniable, even before they were even aware of it. Fate had pushed them together, two halves of a whole waiting for the other.
Julie joined him, her falsetto floating above his melody.
“All I know is you're someone I have always known.
And I don't even know you
Now I wanna hold you,
Hold you close.
I don't ever wanna have to let you go.”
“Suddenly the sunlight: bright and warm…” Julie began, inching closer to him.
“Suddenly I'm holding the world in my arms.” Luke finished. His guitar vanished from his hands at the same time Julie’s fingers left the keys and then their lips finally met.
Julie had always wondered what the big deal about first kisses was. When her and Carrie and Flynn would have their sleepovers back in elementary school, they would spend hours upon hours talking about what their first kisses would be like and how important it was to find the right guy. Julie had always balked at the idea that there would be a first kiss that could be that perfect.
Elementary school Julie had obviously never kissed Luke Patterson.
His lips were soft and gentle against hers, all of his burning passion he felt on a daily basis smouldering into a golden flame intent on her. One of his hands came up to cradle her face and Julie shivered at the feeling of his calluses caressing her cheeks while the other threaded through her hair. Julie let her own mould to his face and stroke the soft wisps of hair at his temples.
It felt as if her heart would beat out of her chest. This felt like the beginning of something incredible and of coming home all at the same time. When she had reached for his hand on her porch all those weeks ago, she had never imagined she would ever gain the opportunity to kiss him.
All too soon, Luke gently pulled away and rested his head against her forehead. He had his eyes closed and a beaming smile split across his face.
“I’m crazy about you, Julie Molina,” he whispered. Julie leaned forward and pecked his lips briefly, causing him to open his eyes.
“Te adoro Luke Patterson.” she murmured. He gently tugged her into his arms and she leaned against his chest, pulling his arms closer around her.
“I know you’re scared of what’s going to happen, Jules.” Luke said softly. “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t too. But I don’t want to waste a moment of my second chance. You brought us back here and I believe I was always meant to know you. I will not let that slip through my fingers.” He pressed a light kiss to her forehead and it stole Julie’s breath away.
“I’ve always known we were connected somehow. I thought it might have been my mom. Maybe…” Julie trailed off.
“Maybe…” Luke prodded.
“...maybe it was something bigger than all of us.”
Luke hugged her closer.
“You mean like fate?” he asked. Julie shrugged.
“I don’t know, and frankly, I’m too content to care.” Luke chuckled and Julie reached up to kiss him again. It was slowly becoming her favorite pastime.
When they broke apart once again, Julie grinned.
“I have more…” she whispered. Luke beamed and gently pulled her up so she was tucked under his arm with all the range to play.
“Say that you'll hold me forever.
Say that the wind won't change on us.
Say that we'll stay with each other.
And it will always be like this.”
Luke squeezed her tenderly.
“I'm gonna hold you forever
The wind will never change on us
Long as we stay with each other…”
Their voices melded together perfectly, as if the universe itself had decided it. And maybe it had. But for the time being, they were just Luke and Julie.
“Then it will always be like this…”

The girls made their way inside of their house and helped Ray and Carlos with the plates and the spaghetti. Julie and Carlos set down a plate for their mom and then sat down. Anastasia sat down on the left side of Julie next to Ray.
“Here, we go. Okay. Let’s do this.” Ray said.
They all took each other's hands and Carlos and Julie held their hands out in the place where their mom used to sit.
“Your turn, Carlos.”
“Thank you for our leftovers and the power of the mighty microwave. Amen!” They all let their hands.
“Amen.” said both of the girls.
Julie and Anastasia held up their plates as Ray put spaghetti on Asia’s plate.
“So.. Carlos tells me he found you two in the studio,” said Ray putting spaghetti on Julie’s plate.
“They were out there, talking to themselves.”
“Julie was helping me rehearse for a play,” Asia said quickly.
“Hello! Hello!” They heard.
“Oh, busted,” said Carlos, as they grabbed the stuff from Julie’s mom’s side of the table hiding it or if you're Carlos and Ray throwing it.
“Yeah, we’re in here. Quick!” said Ray. Julie hid the plate on her lap.
“Huh. Spaghetti. Again? While a guest is here?” said Julie Tia Victoria.
“Victoria, you know Anastasia is basically family at this point,” said Ray.
“How could I forget, Asia. My sister loved her.” Anastasia smiled at the comment.
“I brought you my pastels and Arroz con pollo,” said Victoria as she put the food in the fridge.
“Yum!”
“Mm!” Thanks, tia. It smells great.” Julie said.
“You can have it tomorrow. I can’t let you have leftovers every night. My sister would kill me. May she rest in peace.” said Victoria as she headed over to the table. “Oh...I see things here are going better?” She said as rubbed the spot where Julie’s mom once sat.
“Actually... Julie with the help of Asia. Have been cleaning out mom’s studio.” Ray said looking at the two girls then looking at Victoria. “Hopefully, we can get the house on the market and some offers soon.”
“Well, I like the sound of that. Moving from here is only gonna help you move on.” Anastasia looked over and saw the guys. She had lightly kicked Julie to look at the door to see the guys. “You‘ve got to rip that Band-Aid off and get the pain over with.”
Julie yelled out.
“Umm.. that’s me. Ripping off the Band-Aid. Aah!” said Julie chucking nervously.
“That’s my brave girl,” Victoria had grabbed Julies’ chin.
“Hey, Julie. I really liked what you guys did with the place.” Luke whispered to Julie.
“You shouldnt be here,” Julie said to Luke out loud as Victoria gasped.
“Oh, I’m just here to help, Mija,” Victoria said as Julie looked at Victoria and Anastasia tried to motion for the boys to leave.
“What she means is, you should be at Pilates,” said Anastasia smiling.
“Thanks for bringing us food,” said Julie, delivering a smile as she hugged Victoria.
“Oh, it’s nothing. And now that Julie is no longer in the music program, you can concentrate on classes that matter.” Julie let go of her aunt forgetting that she was supposed to tell her dad.
“You got the email from the school, right?” Victoria asked Ray.
“Yeah. We’re still discussing it.” Ray looked at Julie.
“Bueno, I’m off to Pilates. Mwah!’ She blew Carlos a kiss.
“Oh, yeah. Wa-chow! It’s gone.” Carlos pretended to hit it like it was a baseball.
“So, Julie, wanna hear how I slid into home and was almost safe?” Julie leaned in to listen to Carlos.
“Or what about what happened during my cheer practice?” Asked Anastasia.
“You’re a good brother. And you’re a good friend. That’s not gonna work.” Ray snapped his fingers and pointed for them to leave. Both Carlos and Anastasia got up and went into the living room.
“We tried.” Said Carlos before grabbing his plate.
“You should tell me all about it in the living room,” said Anastasia pushing Carlo into the living room.
Soon, they could hear loud rock music blasting. Anastasia got up and quickly ran over to the dining table.
“What’s that?” Carlos asked from behind Asia.
“We must have left the stereo on in the garage. We’ll go get it,” said Julie. Julie opened the door to the house and ran to the studio. Julie ran toward the studio with Asia running behind her. They opened the garage doors and the guys were playing their instruments.
“Guys! Knock it off!” Julie yelled.
“Stop it! Cut it out!” Luke looked at Julie but kept playing while Reggie had quickly stopped.
“Dude really? Knock it off!” Julie yelled.
“Alex, Luke! Stop playing!” Yelled Asia.
The other two boys had stopped playing.
“The whole neighborhood can hear you. I thought I told you to leave.” Julie crossed her arms and looked at the boys.
“Julie, can you just stop being so mean to them?” Asked Asia. Julie turned towards her then turned back around.
“Wait. People can hear us play?” Luke asked excitedly.
“Yes, and so did my dad and my little brother!”
“W-W-Wait. Wait. So, only you two can see us, but everyone can hear us? I mean, what kind of ghosts are we.” Alex asked.
“Some pretty cool ghosts.” Said Anastasia smiling.
“Who cares, man? People can hear us play!” Luke said fist bumps, Reggie and Alex.
“We might be dead, but our music isn’t,” said Reggie.
Ray had opened the door to the studio.
“Dad! Julie said loudly, making Asia turn to look at Ray.
“Hey. Just making sure you guys are okay.” Ray said walking into the garage.
“Yeah, we’re fine. We just had to turn off the CD players,” Julie said pointing to the CD player.
“Wait. Is this the junk that was in the loft?” Ray asked looking at the instruments that the boys were just using.
“Juke?” Luke asked, sounding like he was offended.
Ray walked over to the drum where Alex was and started to hit the drums and spin the cymbals.
“Some of this stuff is in pretty good shape. Hey, maybe we could make a couple of bucks,” said Ray looking at the two girls as he kept playing with the drums.
“What! Yo, stop touching my drums! Tell him to stop touching my drums!” Alex yelled. Anastasia put her hand up in defense as Luke looked at the girls.
“I liked that song you had on.” Ray walked around the drums.
“Sweet, We’re Sunset Curve,” Luke said to Ray as he stood in between him and Reggie.
“Tell your friends,” said Reggie.
“It’s just an old CD I found,” said Anastasia causing the boys to look at her.
“Well, still, it’s nice that you’re listening to music again. Out here you can play whatever you want, whenever you want.” Ray said as his hands went through Luke and Reggie’s chest.
“Oh! That’s nice!” Reggie said, smiling.
“Stay out of this,” Julie whispered, shouting to the guys. Anastasia facepalmed.
“I- I’m sorry, honey. I didn’t…”
“Oh no, no, no, no. Not you. I mean..uh.. er... You know, give us a minute.” Julie rambled as she grabbed her dad’s hands and led him to the door.
“Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. We’ll figure out this music program thing.” Ray said, placing his hand on Julie’s shoulders.
“Thanks, Dad.” She pointed to the door.
Ray then left the studio and Julie grabbed the door handle and pulled it to close it as she glared at the three boys in front of her.
“He likes our song,” Luke said looking at Alex and Reggie.
“He’s a dad so technically it doesn’t count, Luke,” said Anastasia looking at the three boys. Alex had pointed to her agreeing to what she had said.
“Why can’t you guys be normal ghosts? Hang out in an old mansion, I hear Pasadena’s nice.” Julie yelled then opened the door and walked off.
“Julie!” Yelled Anastasia.
“I think she’s warming up to us.” Said Alex putting his hands in his pocket.
“Yeah, I’ve always wanted to go to Pasadena.” Said Reggie looking at the boys.
“I’ll go talk to her.” Said Luke before poofing out of the studio. Anastasia opened the door to the studio and walked out closing it behind her.
“Aah! Stop it. I’m serious.” Anastasia heard Julie say as Luke poofed in front of her.
“Oh, I’m sorry.”
“What do you want?”
“I know this is all completely insane, but you do know how far this is? People... Actual people can hear us play.”
“Yeah, it’s just I’ve just had a really, really awful day. I gotta go.” Julie said as she was walking off.
“Well, I’m sorry you had a bad day but three guys found out that they had a bad 25 years.” Said Luke. Anastasia moved over to the steps waiting for the conversation to end. “And then they found out that the one thing, one thing they lived for in the first place they can still do. That’s pretty rad.”
“You’re right. It’s just...”
“Your bad day,” Luke said, finishing her sentence. “Yeah. I know.” Luke looked down at the ground and then looked back up at Julie. “Look. I’m sorry we came into your life, but... what I just felt in there actually made me feel alive again. We all felt alive again. So, you can kick us out if you want, but we’re not giving up music. We can play again! That’s a gift no musician would ever turn down.” Luke sighed. “You gotta know that. Clearly, your mom is into music.”
“Was. She passed away.” Anastasia could hear the sadness in her voice.
“I am... so sorry.”
“Yeah, we.. we didn’t know.” Said Alex. Anastasia, Luke, and Julie all looked over to Alex and Reggie.
Julie sighed. “It’s all right. You guys haven’t seen her anywhere, have you? From wherever you’re from.” Julie looked around at the boys hoping to find some closure.
“Um... No. No, I mean, you two are  people we’ve seen.” Said Alex looking at Julie and Asia.
“Yeah, but they're not dead, so it doesn’t answer Julie’s question.” Said Reggie looking at Alex.
“Yeah. I think they know what we mean.” Alex said looking at Reggie, sounding annoyed by him. Alex looked at Julie and said, “I’m sorry for your loss.”
“Thanks. Sorry I got mad.” Julie apologized to the guys. “You guys are kinda good.”
“Julie, kinda? They were amazing!” Asia said with a smile on her face.
Luke smiled at Asia's comment. “Kinda? Y-Y-You know that’s like 25 years of rust just getting dusted off.” Alex looked at Reggie with a smile on his face.
“Yeah. Do you play the piano too?” Reggie asked.
“No, but Asia does and a couple more instruments.”
“Julie!” Said Asia sounding embarrassed by Julie’s comment.
“But, no. I don’t play. That was my mom’s stuff in there.”
“No way. She’s an amazing songwriter.” Said Luke.
“She was. Wait. How would you know?”
“There’s a song on the piano. If it’s hers... Your mom was really talented.”
Julie starts to walk off but Anastasia stops her and motions her to say something else to the three boys.
“I guess... if you need a place to stay, you can stay in there. There’s a bathroom in the back and a couch that turns into a bed if you still use any of that stuff.”
“Dibs on the shower!” Shouted Reggie. Anastasia chuckled. “I just really like showers and sometimes the occasional bath.”
“This... This is just too weird.” Julie said, making hand motions to the guys. “Yeah.” Anastasia waves to the guys before walking off with Julie.
——————𖠄———————
“What would you say if I told you there are three ghosts living in my mom’s studio?” Said Julie texting Flynn.
Anastasia walks into Julie's room in her pj’s with a towel wrapped around her hair. “Julie, she would think you're absolutely crazy and that’s coming from me.”
“Yeah, maybe I shouldn’t send it.”
“Yeah.” Said Anastasia laying back on Julie's bed. “You know there could be a reason they’re here you just don’t it yet.”
“Probably, but that doesn’t understand why you can see them too.”
“Maybe it’s because I’m like the sister you never had?” Julie chuckled. “Time to sleep, Jules.”
Julies turns off the light in her room and both girls drift to sleep.

Anastasia was known around the school for being a varsity cheerleader and one of the members of Dirty Candy (Which has honestly never shown her real singing talent). Anastasia, Flynn, and their former friend Carrie tried their best to help Julie. They find a CD in a box and decide to play it to help them clean. When they play the CD three boys appear in Julie’s studio. What will happen? But let’s backtrack to the beginning of today.
As the bell rings to signal the end of class. Anastasia was seen walking down the hallways heading to her locker in her blush pink dress and her letterman jacket. A couple of people would walk up to her while she was walking to her locker to say hi. She would reply to them and smile. As she made it to her locker, a Puerto Rican with brown curly hair, wearing clothes like she didn’t want to be noticed today walked up to the locker next to her.
“Hey, Julies.” Anastasia greeted as she opened her locker.
“Hey, Ms. Cheerleader,” said Julie, smiling at her.
Anastasia giggles before saying, “you know I don’t like it when you call me that.”
“I know but you are a cheerleader so…”
A girl in colorful clothing walks up to the two girls. “Hey, Underachiever.” As their friend Flynn referred to Julie. “Hey, Overachiever.” referring to Anastasia.
“Hey, disappointment.” Julie and Anastasia replied with smiles on their face.
“Okay, I know you don’t want me to ask you this, but have you figured out what you’re gonna do today?” Flynn questioned.
“I’ll know in the moment,” Julie answered.
Anastasia frowned. “Girl, come on. We got to know something.” Anastasia looked down knowing that Julie had been through a lot after her mom passed. She had never seen her so down. Anastasia knew how much Julie’s mom meant to Julie. Julie’s mom meant so much to Anastasia her mom taught her how to play the piano and the guitar. She would spend the weekends hanging out at Julie’s house making music together. It was their favorite pastime.
“Really, Julies? That’s all you’re giving me? Ms. Harrison said this is your last chance.” Flynn urged with worry seeping into her tone.
“I know, I was there,” said Julie.
“See you at the rally,” said a distinctive voice the three girls knew too well. A blonde girl wearing a two-piece pink top and skirt, handing out flyers to the people around her.
“Ugh, what is she handing out?” Flynn asked.
“Oh, I forgot we’re performing at the rally tomorrow,” Anastasia mumbled.
Flynn looked at her glaring before turning back around.
“Desperation, no offense Ana.” Guessed Julie.
“I don’t blame you, I would say the same thing,” Anastasia replied, smirking.
Carrie walked up to the three girls handing Julie and Flynn flyers. “Here you go. My group’s performing at the spirit rally tomorrow. I’m sure you guys have nothing better to do. Am I right Anastasia?”
“I’m pretty sure they would only show up just to see me,” Anastasia replied, rolling her eyes at the blonde.
Flynn, ignoring the comment from Anastasia, is annoyed that she still hasn’t quit Carrie’s group “Dirty Candy.” “Oh my gosh, Carrie, thanks!” Flynn exclaimed in a fake excited tone.
Carrie put her hand on her chest faking to be hurt. “Oh my gosh, Flynn, don’t bother coming!”
“She didn’t mean that,” said Anastasia.
“Oh yes I did, Anastasia,” said Carrie smirking before turning around and walking handing more flyers out to people. Flynn crumpled up her flyer in her fist. Anastasia took Julie’s flyer out her hand knowing good and well she wasn’t going to go. She looked at Julie for a second before looking at what she was or should I whom she was staring at, which happened to be Carrie’s boyfriend.
“Nick?” Flynn questioned. “Still? You know they’re gonna get married and have a bunch of unholy babies.”
“Nick’s a sweetheart,” Julie argued.
“Yeah, you’d actually have to talk to him to know that.” Anastasia quickly replied.
“True and only one of them has to be a demon to make a demon baby.” Flynn looks right at Carrie before shouting “Demon!” Carrie looks at the three girls. The three girls turned away quickly laughing.
Flynn pointed to Julie’s face. “There’s that smile. Now let’s go prove everybody wrong.”
Julie and Anastasia closed their lockers, all three of them walked to music class. They sat down next to each other and waited for the class to begin. Ms. Harrison walked into the room telling all of the students who would be performing today. Flynn and Anastasia had gone the day prior. Mrs. Harrison had called up Nick to perform first, who absolutely killed it on the electric guitar. Everyone in the class had clapped for him after he had finished.
“Nick job, Nick,” Ms. Harrison praised. “Almost as impressive as your game against Glendale.
Nick and a couple of his lacrosse friends chuckled. Anastasia had also chuckled as she was there at the game cheering for the school lacrosse team.
“Okay, we have one last performance,” Ms. Harrison announced while Nick went to unplug his guitar. “Julie.”
Julie looked up nervously. She had stood and placed the hat she was wearing on the chair. Anastasia and Flynn quickly glanced at each other in concern as they watched Julie slowly approach the grand piano in the classroom. Julie slowly placed her sheet music down on top of the piano as she sat down. Anastasia and Flynn gave Julie thumbs up as in encouragement.
“Take your time,” Ms. Harrison told Julie softly
Julie took a deep breath, she opened the piano to reveal the keys. She placed her fingers on the keys gently before quickly retracting them. Flynn and Anastasia’s eyes widened as they both stood up worrying about Julie.
Julie got to her and shook her head. “I’m sorry.”
“Is this when we clap?” Carrie questioned.
Ms. Harrison turned and gave Carrie a look. Julie rushed out of the room and into the hallways.
“Watch it, Carrie,” Flynn scolding Carrie before running after Julie.
“That was a really bitchy move, Carrie, even for you,” said Anastasia.
“Ms. Madden, Language,” said Ms. Harrison, scolding Anastasia.
“Sorry, is it okay if--”
Ms. Harrison nodded knowing what she was about to ask and soon motioning her to go after the girls. Anastasia quickly ran after her two best friends. As she made out to the hallways she could Flynn talking to Julie.
“Julie! Girl, you better get back up there and you show them you can sing!”
Anastasia finally made over to them. “We all know you can do it, Julie!”
“I’ve tried for myself, I’ve tried for Ms. Harrison, I’ve tried for you two, I’ve tried for Dad, and I’ve tried for Mom. For a whole year, I’ve been trying. But I can’t do this anymore… I can’t…..I’m done.” Julie cried to the two girls. Anastasia looked down trying to hold back tears knowing this was hurting her too. Julie turned and ran out of the door.
“Julie!” The girls called out for her but it was too late she was already gone. Flynn and Anastasia both sat down at the steps holding each other worried for their friend.
——————𖠄———————
“Okay, everyone. Time to get in your stunting groups.” Said Anastasia cheer coach. Anastasia took a deep breath before heading her stunt group. She had been completely messing up since practice started. The only thing on her mind. She was lucky that she had cheered as one of her classes today and didn’t have to stay after school.
“Hey, Ana, are you okay?” asked a brunette girl named Ashley.
“Not really, Ash. Do you think I could trade your stop today and back spot? I don’t feel in the right mindset to fly today.”
“Oh sure, I do need more practice on it anyways.”
Anastasia gives her a weak smile. After practicing for 20 minutes their coach comes up to the group of 4.
“Ana, I haven’t seen you stunt yet. Can you and Ashley switch? I really want to see what you have been working on.
“Yes, Coach.” The girls switched positions as they did so that their coach gave them the idea of doing a basket toss. Anastasia’s eyes widened as she was completely nervous to try the move knowing that was going to have her be completely focused even though she really wasn’t. They warm up for a good five minutes before trying it the first time the head almost did it correctly if it wasn’t for Ari messing up at the beginning. They tried it again but it didn’t go so well they wound up dropping her. Anastasia screamed as she fell. The coach runs up to her as the rest of the team does as well.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, Coach. I’m fine. It doesn’t even hurt. It was my fault. I wasn’t focused, don’t blame it on them.”
“Don’t worry about who is at fault. Right now I need my star flyer healthy. Go to the nurse and let her check you. When she lets you go you can go home and get some rest. Can you do that for me?” said her coach with concern in her voice.
“Yeah, I can do that.” Anastasia gets up and grabs her stuff and heads to the nurse’s office. The nurse said her right leg and her arms were just bruised and she would just be fine if she iced it. She walks out the office getting a message for her mom saying she was going to pick up with her stuff to sleepover at the Molina’s.

I’ve been getting requests to continue the ‘Ray Molina: Crime Scene Photographer and Matchmaker’ one shot, especially for there to be a chapter dedicated to the Juke date. But it’s a one and done kind of thing guys, I’m afraid.
But..
If I were to do a date, this is how I would do it:
It won’t be the movie date because it seemed to have go off without a hitch in the one shot. No, we’re jumping a few dates ahead.
Julie and Luke are going strong. They’ll be at the fair, and we’ll get some inner monologues about how much their lives have changed for the better ever since they started dating and it’d be cute.
Everything is great, the night is beautiful, they’re having a wonderful time.
They’re walking hand in hand after Julie wins Luke a giant stuffed bear, when all of the sudden Julie feels like she’s being watched. She turns around and thinks she sees someone fairly familiar amongst the crowd but she’s not too sure. She thinks nothing of it.
They walk a little further and then it happens again. Julie catches eyes with someone she swears she has seen before, but then they disappear before she and Luke could get too close.
The night goes on, they grab a bite to eat, they ride a couple rides. It’s while waiting in line for the Ferris Wheel that Julie looks off in the distance and- wait a minute? Is that Officer Rabello? Hiding behind the cotton candy machine?
She’s about to call out to him when she notices more familiar faces scattered in the crowds going about the fair- Officer Steranko, Officer Jenkins, Officer Chen-Roberts...
Julie has grown up around these people, around cops, so she's able to pick them out of a group even when they’re trying to be discrete.
And it hits Julie... they were watching her and Luke on their date!
She’s furious, but she doesn’t tell Luke. She knows that Luke has quite the reputation for being a troublemaker and a lot of adults, including his parents, don’t really think too highly of him at the moment and he’s been working so hard to give a good impression on her dad and Carlos.
He wants to prove himself worthy for her. Him finding out that her dad sent his friends to spy on them would only serve to make him feel like he couldn’t be trusted with her.
So she bottles it up, and waits until she gets home to lay it all on her dad.
“I can’t believe you!”
“Julie, what is it?”
“I thought you liked Luke! I don’t see why you feel the need to send your cop friends in to spy on us tonight!”
But this is news to Ray because he did no such thing. So the next day at work, he confront his colleagues, who admit that they have been at the fair the night before.
They all watched Julie grow up, they all knew Rose, they wanted to keep on eye on her. Especially if she’s hanging around that Patterson kid.
Ray is touched that they would be so protective over Julie but that doesn’t excuse them from talking to Luke in that kind of manner.
“Look Ray, I know if it’s my kid dating some punk musician-”
“He’s a good kid! Something you would have known from spying on him last night!”
Ray gets all riled up and starts going on about how amazing of a young man Luke is and how the Molina household has become such a happier and warmer place now that he’s in their lives. He makes Julie happy. He cares for Carlos and he helps out Ray when he can. He trusts him and that should be enough.
The colleagues are all stunned into silence. Then all of the sudden Ray hears someone clear their throat from behind him.
He turns around and finds Luke, waiting sheepishly behind him, apparently stopping by his work to see if they can talk about plans for Julie’s birthday coming up.
Ray pulls him aside, sending one last glare at his friends before leaving the station altogether to talk. Luke appears to be rattled and Ray braces himself.
“How much did you hear?”
“Everything”
“Luke, I’m sorry. I had no idea they were-”
“No one has ever stood up for me like that before,”
Ray frowns, “Well, I bet Alex or Reggie or Bobby-”
“No. I mean, like, an adult,”
“Oh,”
“Did you mean what you said?”
“Of course. Every word,”
“...cool”
From then on Ray eases up on Luke. Well, he has always been warm and kind to Luke but with the occasional jab or putting the fear of God into him in case he ever screwed up. But he stopped doing the latter and just ends up inviting Luke over to the house more, and even encouraged him to bring along his friends, who he hears don’t have that nice of home lives either.
And the cops stop spying on Julie and Luke on their dates because, to be honest, they’ve seen everything they needed to see.
They saw Luke break out into a big smile when Julie won the ring toss and scored him a fluffy teddy bear, how he pulled Julie into a sweet dance while the local band played, how he dashed through the crowd, nearly knocking people over, trying to grab tissues for Julie’s dripping ice cream. And even though he didn’t have sleeves so he couldn’t give Julie his jacket when she got cold, he settled for wrapping her up in his arms the whole time to keep her warm.
They see no need to keep an eye on Julie anymore. Seems like that Patterson kid’s got that covered.

Chuck E. Cheese Juke idea
Okay kiddos buckle up because I got quite the AU.
Started off as a joke, but now I’m thoroughly invested in the idea of a Chuck E. Cheese Juke meet cute.
Now hear me out. This could go two ways:
1) Birthday Party disaster a.k.a The boys work at Chuck E. Cheese.
They would constantly fight who gets to be Chuck E. Cheese at the birthday parties because none of them want to do it. The costume is bulky, even with the rebrand and the slimmer mascot, and it smells and it gets hot too fast.
Anyways, Luke would get stuck doing it one Saturday afternoon, and he gets the honor of being the mascot for Carlos’ birthday. He’s like 11 or 12 and bit too old for the party, but Tia Victoria planned the party, so they’re all sucking it up.
And the party goes horribly wrong.
In a series of terrible events, Julie ends up falling onto the cake, Luke tries to help but his head falls off- ruining the illusion and making children cry. And as Julie lays there in Luke’s arms, she looks up and thinks- “Holy crap. Chuck E. Cheese is hot,”
Luke ends up getting fired, but he helps Julie clean cake off her, they talk, and he ends up scoring her number, so- not a bad Saturday after all.
2) Cute Love Story a.k.a The girls, Willie, and Nick work at Chuck E. Cheese
Julie and Flynn work Chuck E. Cheese, and they’re both wondering why there’s a group of 17 year old boys who come in practically every weekend to play games that are clearly too easy for them.
At first they think it’s because that tall blond one would attempt to flirt with Willie who worked the prize counter and ends up chickening out.
Turns out Luke, Alex, and Reggie used to go to Chuck E. Cheese when they were kids because it was their happy place, somewhere they could go when things got too bad at home. And once they were able to scrounge up enough allowance for the week, they keep going, and they keep tradition to this day.
Julie looks forward to when the guys come by, they always make work fun and the kids love them too.
Sometimes she looks up while she, Flynn, and Nick (who’s in the Chuck E Cheese suit) are facilitating the birthday parties and sees Luke and the boys doing the hand gestures with them and singing along, making her laugh.
And the boys come in so often that management knows who they are, and the boys take it upon themselves to help out whenever they can, acting like they all work there.
Alex settles ticket disputes between kids, Reggie coaxes scared kids into coming down from the tunnels, and Luke helps out poor kids who don’t have enough tokens. All of them help kids score high on games for maximum ticket rewards.
Julie finds herself developing a crush on Luke over time, and it doesn’t help that he insists on sticking around once they close up and helps her.
One of these times, he gets her to jump onto the stage and ease her back into singing again because she hasn’t been able to sing her own stuff since her mom died.
And in return she makes sure he and the boys have enough food to take home because she knows the boys just save up their lunch money from the week for Chuck E Cheese cash.
They would gift each other small prizes from the counter every now and then, and Julie gives him a small ring as a joke- but the kids saw it and are now convinced she and Luke are married.
Their first kiss would definitely be up in the tunnels after hours when Julie goes up there to talk him down after he got into an argument with his parents...
And yes, Luke would eventually don the Chuck E Cheese suit one day when they had no one else to fill in for Nick. And Julie gets flustered helping him into the suit...
Thanks to everyone in the Julie and the Fantoms discord server for catering to my madness.
Especially to: @randomfandoming1 @lwhoscribbles @randomestfandoms @superfandomqueen
This is what came out of it :)

‘Walk A Mile In My Doodled Shoes’ Juke Excerpt
Here’s an snippet from the most recent chapter, Chapter 5, of my JATP Possession!Fic. Read the rest on AO3.
__________
“You found it here, right? With the rest of our stuff?”
“Yeah. Just kind of a hodgepodge of junk up here,” She knelt before a garbage bag-
“Oh wait that’s-”
She opened it, her face puckering at the smell radiating from the contents, “This is where you’ve been keeping your clothes?”
Luke shrunk, bashful, “Yeah.”
Initially, Julie was disgusted. (She had no idea teenage boy stench transcended death. Ugh, these clothes reeked!).
But when it occurred to her that the boys have been making these wardrobe changes the entire time, and that not once had they asked if they could run them through the wash, Julie felt bad. And, taking a look around, locating Alex’s duffle, Reggie’s backpack, and-
Her hands felt around the plastic of the garbage bag. Luke had a lot of clothes in here.
He had run away from home after all.  Must have carried all that he could, not planning to come back so soon. He had crashed here long before being magically summoned. It had been sitting here for all this time that the articles emerged wrinkled.
Luke never said anything. Never mentioned how in the studio he called home, he hadn’t been able to really settle in.
This really was unacceptable.
“You know…” she began, “I can throw these in with my load, if you want?”
“Julie, no it’s fine,” he refused, “Can’t have your dad wondering why you got boxers and old band tees in your laundry basket.”
Expecting resistance but not willing to take no for an answer, she closed the bag and tossed it over the edge, amidst Luke’s protests. She did the same with Alex’s and Reggie’s too.
“I’m gonna find a place for you guys to keep them too,”
Luke poofed down, tossing his bag back up, “Julie, you don’t- you don’t have to.”
Julie threw it down again, accidentally having it phase through him.
“You live here,” she affirmed, “Might as well turn the loft into storage for your stuff. Recording booth whatever.”
The ghost let out a growl, hefting the bag over his shoulder, ready to get on with this dance again, but Julie shot him a challenging look, raising a finger, daring him to do it.
There was now a standoff. Whose stubbornness would hold out? Luke was quite the contender. But as much as Julie was a Molina, she was still very much a Sanchez, and her mom’s side of the family was known to be forcibly hospitable when needed.
“At least, let me clean them, and we’ll figure it out,”
Luke looked like he wanted to argue. And it might have been her robust stubbornness winning out that got him to surrender (but to be honest, Luke probably got a whiff of his own clothes and reconsidered), he dropped the bag.
“Fine,” he grumbled, as if he lost. But he was getting clean and wrinkle-free clothes of this deal, so…
He ascended and met her back at the loft, resuming junk-clearing duties. And Julie did the same, finding it best to drop the subject for now.
Some minutes passed when she heard Luke mutter from his side of the area.
“Thanks, though,” It sounded like it was tough for him to say, and she got it. Alex wasn’t the only one to keep things to himself for the sake of others, she guessed.
She nodded, “This is your home too, you know?”
“Yeah,” he sighed, “I know.”
Julie wanted to see his face during this exchange, but this was a sore subject for him. For the both of them. So, she busied herself with the sorting and he did the same...
