Even when he was a kid, even when he had the closest feeling to home, the rest of the Black Rose’s crew could see how fucked up that kid was!! And now Drey, who’s probably thought everyone was dead in the same way Chip and Lizzie had, sees Chip again and can barely look at him. That says so much it HURTS.

Chip was haunted as a lonely orphan, stuck in poverty an orphanages. Chip was haunted on the Black Rose, trying to experience the comfort and meaning he never had. Chip was haunted after The Hole in the Sea, the trauma, the memories and the loss is stuck with him for life. Chip is haunted by his time in Reuben’s gangs (even if he’s forgotten the fire, I doubt it won’t come back to bite him in the ass). Chip is haunted by all the fucked up experiences he’s gone through with Gillion and Jay, and he still barely copes or communicates his pain or all he’s been through.

Bizly and Grizzly continue to make a point of Chip’s haunted eyes. So from that I guess you can see it that clearly if you look hard enough. Chip always says “I’ve seen unimaginable horrors worse than this,” to many things already horrifying. CHIP YOU’RE ONLY 19!!!

Drey sees Chip now, barely an adult, and he’s only worse. Plus, Chip has barely gotten anything close to closure or meaning in his whole life. Not until Gillion tells him for the first time that he’s enough, and that’s a whole other scene to unpack.

Gillion Tidestrider is the protector of his group and he is KEENLY aware of his position.

As soon as he was deposited in the donjon, his one anxiety was that he had left his friends behind. And it didn't matter if he knew that he couldn't escape on his own, he still TRIED. He would have searched and searched and attempted to break out on his own if he hadn't been interrupted by the donjon. Because he knows that he NEEDS to be there for his friends. And he KNOWS this because as soon as he came back he had no time to recover, he had to pull Jay and Chip out of the storm himself. He KNOWS this because Jay was relying on him to pull Chip together and Chip needed him there to tell him he was good enough to stay with the crew.

He is their tank, he is their healer, he is their emotional support.

And that's why he couldn't tell them about his life in the Undersea, that's why he has to be at the front of every fight, that's why he can't spare his healing for himself, that's why he can't cry in front of them, that's why he has to stay up into the late hours and train.

Gillion Tidestrider can't rest because his friends need him.

the MOMENT they walked up to that lemonade stand and saw how successfully the rest of the crew had been running it while they were gone i knew chip was gonna take that seemingly happy moment as “they’re thriving without me and im useless” he took that as solid proof they don’t need him. and he feels so worthless at this point that he won’t accept comfort from jay because he’s convinced he doesn’t deserve any care from anyone, Least of all her. his grasp on whatever sense of identity he was clinging onto for so long is slipping, he’s losing himself in his self loathing. and all gillion can do is watch as the 2 of them fall apart over him.

the 3 of them are such a necessary balance for each other that they literally can’t function under any circumstance where that balance is upset because they are each other’s Only stability. alarmingly co-dependent co-captains
